I don’t get the uncanny valley effect at all for anything except monkeys. Videos games and animated movies can be as pseudo-realistic as they want, and it just never freaks me out. Monkeys though? Holy fuck.

Their eyes. The way they move. The way they pick at their skin and fingers. The way they interact with one another. The things they do when they’re idle. It’s all so… so human, and yet not at the same time. They’re like us, and yet, they’re not us.

Seeing wild monkeys do these small gestures and -isms that feel natural to me, as well… it just puts everything into perspective. We’re not as special as we think we are. We’re one genus away from being just like them. They may be wild animals, and we may be “civilized people,” but, at the end of the day, the foundation of who they are is the exact same as the foundation of who we are. And old habits die hard.

And that makes me really uneasy.

Recently I've been going through my old dinosaur books, and ignoring how blatantly outdated most of them are, some of them have raised a question that I was hoping you might have some input on.

Why are species names always in lower case?

Like, my brain always wants to capitalise them as proper nouns, but I know that'd be wrong. I just wanted to ask on the off chance that you know the answer, if not no worries, was only curious :)

It's just the accepted way to write binomial names! Italicized, capital for the Genus, lowercase for the species
