So, Gushing Over Magical Girls Is The Best Thing To Happen to Magical Girls
Tumblr media
Gushing Over Magical Girls get this bad rep. For all the wrong reasons. Iā€™ve seen it be called an insult to Magical Girls, Iā€™ve seen it be called ā€œgooner baitā€ a term I absolutely despise but thatā€™s a thing for another day. Iā€™ve seen it insulted for everything and anything under the sun.
I first got acquainted with it when I was scrolling through Twitter and I saw someone complain about the PV. However, as an avid Magical Girl Fan, I wasnā€™t disgusted. I was intrigued.
I decided to read the manga, and oh god.
This is one of the best things Iā€™ve read.
The story follows Utena, a shy girl that loves Magical Girls, tricked to become the evil general that will defeat the Magical Girl team ā€œTres Magiaā€.
And itā€™s a delight.
I binged all the episodes available to me in the manga, and had fun in each and every chapter.
The same, however, couldnā€™t be said by half the people who watched the anime. And I was extremely baffled. As a queer woman, this was the first time in my life, in which I had seen something so deliberately catered towards me. I saw tell-tale signs of someone who genuinely admires the genre, and is simply using it as an outlet for exploring deeper and more interesting topics that a SFW version of it would not be able to.
Yet, I turn around and I see people calling it the most horrendous stuff, and accusing everyone who likes it of being monsters or men.
Genuinely, Iā€™ve had enough.
Gushing Over Magical Girl is not the Devil. In fact, I think itā€™s the best thing to come donā€™t even like Magical Girls AND IT SHOWS.
PART 1: ā€œMagical girls are for little girls!ā€.
The first criticism youā€™ll see aimed at ā€œGushing over Magical girlā€ is the amount of sexually charged content it has. And it is true. It borders on straight up porn in many instances and it just gets wilder as you go on. By chapter 30, weā€™re way past PantyShots. Like, Iā€™ve seen some of these girlsā€™ vaginas, and Iā€™m not joking.
Personally, I donā€™t see anything wrong with it, but thereā€™s people who might disagree.
ā€œMagical Girls are for little girlsā€ some people say ā€œand youā€™re corrupting it!ā€
Which genuinely makes me laugh.
This is because this type of argument could only be done by someone with no real concept of Magical Girls aside from maybe Sailor Moon and Sakura Card Captor.
out of the Magical Girl genre in a WHILE (Ignoring Precure, because they just gave us a magical boy and thatā€™s my win of the decade).
People are just, you know, stupid. And reactionary. Enough that they see a boob and lose their minds like a Karen at a Christmas Eve Mall.
My point is, I love this manga. And Iā€™m willing to risk my reputation to defend it. Cause genuinely, half the people who are clutching their pearls over this show - Magical Girl Anime havenā€™t always been PG, or aimed at girls.
Cutie Honey is a great example. Itā€™s one of the most famous Magical Girl Anime you will find - and itā€™s a shonen. With the protagonist, Honey, being constantly naked, groped, put in suggestive situations and have outfits that show her cleavage.
And itā€™s one of the most famous, most popular takes on Magical Girl there is. Yet, I never see any amount of outrage towards it. (Part of me wonders if itā€™s because the fan service is aimed at men, rather than involving yuri).
Thereā€™s also Lyrical Nanoha, one of the most popular serial franchises there is. It spans several seasons and spinoffs, and itā€™s beloved by many.
And itā€™s aimed at older men. Yes, itā€™s a Seinen.
In fact, its origins are far from PG. Itā€™s actually a Spin-off of an erotic game named ā€œTriangle Heartā€. It was most definitely not created with little girls in mind, and themes it tackles reflect as much.
Thereā€™s Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya too, a spinoff of the Fate/Stay Night VN, very obviously aimed at older men, itā€™s a Seinen. It has a lot of fanservice and scenes where the characters are half naked.
Day Break Illusion is also a Shonen.
And as much as I adora Madoka - Iā€™ve been stating for years now that it isnā€™t a show meant for little girls. You could argue itā€™s for everyone, regardless of gender, whoā€™s a little older. But it most definitely wasnā€™t for little girls.
So, no. This was never an ā€œonly girlsā€ club. Trying to paint it as such, is not only wrong but ignorant.
Magical Girl shows can be for anyone. Men, boys, girls, women and I find it infantilizing to consider it ā€œonly for little girlsā€.
No one says ā€œsuper heroes are ONLY for little boysā€
Well, some do. But theyā€™re, you know, bigots. Who donā€™t want girls playing or adults o have fun.
So no, Gushing Over Magical Girls being a sexually charged anime in the Seinen category isnā€™t ā€œcorrupting the genreā€. In fact, I would argue itā€™s doing exactly what the genre has done in the OVA shadows for a while.
Not to mention, many people have screamed from the rooftop how they want ā€œmore mature Magical Girl showsā€ referring to the success of Madoka. But as soon as an actually mature take on Magical Girls shows up, tackling issues of sexuality and love, you all donā€™t want it anymore.
(We all know why, though. Americans, and western culture in general, considers mature themes, only that which involves violence. Anything close to discussing issues of sex is no longer ā€œmatureā€ but ā€œPornographicā€ and deserving of being shoved into a corner. With all queer themes, gender studies, and any nuance that could be had regarding these issues).
And speaking of sexually charged, have you watched so called ā€œwholesomeā€ magical girls? Theyā€™re still very much sexy. Not in the ā€œon the noseā€ ecchi way Seinen and Shonen are - but they still are.
Youā€™ll find transformations were the girls are naked, zoom in to their breasts, youā€™ll have panty shots every now and then. Even themes of growing up, having crushes, and innuendos about sex. Inappropriate relationships, taboo romance, and the likes.
Sakura had Rita and a professorā€™s relationship (mutual in the manga), Sailor Moon had Chibiusa and Elliotā€™s romance, Sugar Sugar Rune even having an element for ā€˜lustā€™ and other different types of love, and letā€™s not forget Mermaid Melody which has several instances of the girls naked, in compromising positions with other men. And Iā€™m pretty sure Tokyo Mew Mew likely opened a whole bunch of doors for girls to be into CNC.
This is, by the way, normal.
Completely so.
These stories often talk about the girlhood experience. And girls and teenage girls are interested in all of these things. Theyā€™re interested in sex, romance, their bodies growing up, their own sexuality and the likes. Itā€™s no wonder same-sex relationships and romance get included, theyā€™re part of what experiencing the world through the eyes of a young girl is like.
And subsequently, it stands to reason that as people who engaged with MG grow up - they find comfort in exploring their sexuality through Magical Girl themselves. Thereā€™s a reason why thereā€™s a growing section of ā€œMagical Girlā€ in your local hentai site.
ā€œMen get off on corrupting this wholesome girl targeted genreā€ is actually TERF rhetoric sneaking through the mainstream. It ignores AFAB ppl and gender nonconforming people, who grew up with Magical Girls, simply using a medium that originally started their journey of sexual identity, to explore more ā€œgrown upā€ aspects of that same identity.
In particular, Iā€™m a Cis AroAce Woman. I wrote a lot of Magical Girl NSFW when I first started writing NSFW Twitter threads. Theyā€™re bad and theyā€™re cringey. But it was something I needed.
Magical Girls were a huge part of my childhood and early teens. When I was mentally in the space to want to engage with NSFW content: it was obvious I would turn to what first sparked excitement.
So this idea that ā€œmen are corrupting Magical Girls with their sick fantasiesā€ is nothing more than TERF-lite propaganda. People, including women and men, have been doing this for ages; for a variety of reasons. And doing so, doesnā€™t rob children of their spaces - but the gentrification of the internet is a story of another day.
The other argument I have heard is that GOMG is a mockery of the genre. Which is even more laughable in my opinion.
PART 2: Parodies and why I hate Earth Defenderā€™s Club.
Gushing Over Magical Girls loves Magical Girls. Itā€™s a parody, in a way, but it knows very well what it parodies. Itā€™s not surface level in the slightest. And it absolutely is not mean spirited about it.
A lot of the time, shows that reference and parody the Magical Girl genre, do so in ways that feel like they view it as a lesser genre. They take generic images of cute girls in frilly outfits, swap the colors around, and have them chant over-the-top spells. Youā€™re meant to laugh, not only at how silly they look, but people who would love it. Especially if theyā€™re grown ups.
I do not like ā€œCute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!ā€ For this exact reason - even tho many people praise it to all heavens.
Because
1) It feels surface level in its commentary and depiction of Magical Girls and
2) More mocking towards the genre than paying homage or doing anything with it.
The continuous use of the word ā€œLoveā€ is a very obvious jab at Magical Girls using these words, which feels mean spirited just for the sake of it. Their outfits are almost exactly the same, save for the colors. And they all use the same sticks as weapon, with no thematic link for the shapes of the scepters. The mascot too (a wombat for god knows what reason), I think itā€™s meant to be a joke of some sort for how ridiculous some of the mascots for the girls get, which rubs me the wrong way.
Tumblr media
In general, it feels shallow and mean spirited. But no one calls this an insult to Magical Girls. Because people who like it don't actually care about Magical Girls. They see cute boys doing silly things and love it. Which is kinda sad.
Now, Gushing Over Magical girls has sort of that same problem on the Tres Magiasā€¦But theyā€™re not the protagonists. And even then, in later chapters, they get power ups that are different in design, and thematically linked.
The protagonist, and the ones we follow, are Utena and the girls. And they all have very distinct outfits, all with motifs that are tangentially thematically linked, and speak of each characterā€™s personalities in interesting ways.
Utena in particular has THIS outfit. Which a lot of people donā€™t like, but I actually do.
Tumblr media
Itā€™s very obvious itā€™s taking inspo from other iconic Bad Girls in the genre. Namely, Utau, Kraehe and Devil Homura. All ā€œEnemy charactersā€ that have unhealthy obsessions with other characters. In particular, I think the wings and the feathers resemble Homura - THE character known to have a massive obsession with a Magical Girl (Madoka), to the point of insanity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thereā€™s also Magia Azure. Whoā€™s a clear reference to the Mean Tsundere girl that is iconic to the genre. Sheā€™s also a Miko. Which is a callback to Sailor Mars, arguably THE girl who popularized this archetype.
I also love what they do with the mascots. Unlike Earth Defenders, where the mascot is you know, a mockery of the archetype of a mascot - useless, only there to give power ups, and obsessed with food - the mascots of GOMG is taking a book from Madoka.
It considers the mascots both all-too-powerful and yet limited in their reach. Which is exactly what the mascots have always been in Magical Girls. Beings so powerful they can give mythical powers to girls, yet helpless to do anything on their own. So, they use magical girls as a vehicle to achieve their goals. Most Magical girls try to paint this as a good thing, but newer genres shine light on how dangerous that can be too.
Madoka tackles it with Kyubey as the main initial mascot, only later to turn out to be the villain of the series.
And in a Post-Madoka world, trusting the mascots is just the slightest bit more difficult. Thatā€™s why, from the get go, GOMG portrays their mascots as morally corrupt. Heā€™s not a good character, heā€™s malicious and doing more harm than good. But for the majority of the series, heā€™s painted more as a useless harmless evil than anything genuinely terrifying or worthy of concern. The attention is focused on other things.
But I love the way that itā€™s heavily implied that theyā€™re not good. Itā€™s a very interesting take on the mascot and it helps with the themes of the series. Which yes, by the way. Gushing Over Magical Girls has themes.
Which lead me to-
Part 3: Yeah, uhm, Gushing Over Magical Girl has themes.
Thereā€™s this idea that Sex is an inherently violent act. In which a man humiliates and sodomizes a woman, and therefore the woman is exploited in some way. And 10x worse is any act that involves BDSM. Itā€™s violence; born out of hatred.
This is TERF rhetoric. Iā€™m not joking. This line of thought leads directly to TERF ideas.
Many on the internet have pointed out as much, and BDSM members have gone to be very vocal about it. In particular, people on the role of the submissive (or the bottoms) are loudly trying to explain the contrary. How they like the act of sex, like the idea of being vulnerable, or being humiliated. Thereā€™s also plenty of LGBT+ stories that talk about it, both in western and eastern spaces. Just jump into the section of dom/sub verse at your local manga browsing website, and youā€™ll find something.
That said, the same is not as common for people who like to ā€œdominateā€.
I can only think of two pieces of media that argue that, whoever is the dominant or the sadist, is also a human being. That whatever theyā€™re doing is done, not out of hatred for the submissive or an act of violence, but love.
One, is the husky and the white cat. In which Mo Ran, among other things, has to come to terms that his love isnā€™t ā€œpureā€. That he cannot love someone without the want to have sex, and to completely dominate that someone.
The second one is Gushing Over Magical Girls.
Itā€™s very clear to me that Utenaā€™s sadism isnā€™t a violent act. Itā€™s an act born out of love. She genuinely loves the Magical Girls, and most girls for that matter, and whenever she is inflicting pain and fighting with them - what she wants is to ultimately help them in some way.
She wants them to ā€œbe the cutest version they can beā€ and wants them to shine brighter than ever.
Thereā€™s this one scene I love, around chapter 20, in which Baiser (Utena) is fighting Magia Azura. And due to Baiser going a bit too far, Azura ends up being Mind-broken. She crawls towards her, calls her ā€œmistressā€ and begs to become her servant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In any normal Hentai youā€™ll find, this is a good thing. This would be the ideal outcome. A character being turned into nothing but a sex slave for the enjoyment of the dominant.
Which is why I found it breathtaking when that didnā€™t happen.
Baiser is horrified by this. She does not want to break the girls, she wants them to be powerful. She wants them to win. With her, the evil one, being nothing more than a vehicle for them to be even stronger than before.
This is the first time Iā€™ve ever seen dominant or sadist characters being presented both sexually, and in such a positive light. Much less a queer woman in the same position.
It doesnā€™t treat BDSM sex as a disgusting taboo act, but something born out of genuine love - and a want to see the other person be or feel better.
This is reinforced around chapter 25 where Leberblume and Loco MĆ¹sica are fighting Baiser. For context, Loco Musica wanted to be an Idol, but had terrible singing. She uses her evil power to basically force everyone to listen to her sing (which is so reminiscent of Mermaid Melody btw). When they fight, Baiser wins, and is then set to use her new found power to ā€œpunishā€ Loco Musica.
Originally, Loco Musica points out how Baiserā€™s sadistic tendencies are ā€œthe sameā€ as Lord Enorme, who weā€™ve seen uses sadism as a genuine form of punishment. Something to avoid. You behave well, because you donā€™t want to get hurt or humiliated by her.
However, when Baiser uses her own unique type of sadism on Loco Musica, something happens. Instead of causing her physical pain by beating her or using violence, she forces her to get naked and perform her idol song like that. This causes her to get extremely embarrassed. And in the process, she actually starts to sing really well.
This is important for two reasons
1) Baiser is actually taking into account who Musica is. Itā€™s later revealed that Musica wanted a more frilly idol-like outfit but Lord Enorme shut it down, for the sake of a more ā€˜unifiedā€™ aesthetic. Baiser is not just throwing around the same treatment and punishment for all girls - what one might like, the other might hate.
2) At the end of the day, while she did the punishment, it was both embarrassing, but ultimately something that helped Musica and made her feel better.
And thatā€™s really the key here, and why I love the series.
Sadism, sex and kinks in general are not tools of degeneracy. Theyā€™re treated as part of our experience.
Also, itā€™s just fun?
Part 4: Gushing Over Magical Girls is just extremely fun when you donā€™t have a dumb bitch yapping abt how unholy it is to see tiddies on a screen
Yeah, GOMG just has one of the most creative depictions of the most insane of kinks youā€™ll see - I could spent hour gushing over Nero Alice.
Seeing all these different kinks being depicted as powers and abilities that these characters have - and seeing how they interact with other people is just interesting.
The sex scenes are both hilarious and kinda sexy. Specially if you do like to see women all hot and bothered. Personally Iā€™m not into girls (or anyone for that matter) but I have to admit the scenes were pretty hot. And there is no shame in admitting as much. No matter what the puritanical Christian on Twitter crying abt ā€œgod honoring lesbian sexā€ Will tell you.
I cannot begin to explain just how hype and relatable it was to see Magia Baiser defeat Lord Enorme with the power of straight up delusion, we STAN.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, yeah.
Itā€™s been a while since I last saw a Magical Girl Show so unashamed of being a Magical Girl Show. Unashamed of being weird, of praising the genre and just enjoying it.
My essay is titled, in part, as a joking reference to my much more popular series ā€œMLB is the worst thing to happen to the magical girl seriesā€. Which I still think is true.
And while, yeah, maybe GOMG isnā€™t the best thing to come out of the genreā€¦I still think itā€™s good that it came out.
A lot of people say they want a more ā€œmatureā€ take on Magical Girls but - this proved to me that just isnā€™t the case.
Gushing over magical girls proves that the Magical Girl Genre Can Be so much more than what people think. More than glitter and sparkles, more than vapid action scenes, or what little girls want.
Much like any other genre, it can be raunchy, it can be messy, it can explore things outside of the status quo. But it can still deeply respect the source material, and the origins of it.
GOMG proves Magical Girls can be fun. Just. Straight up fun. Regardless of your age. They can serve and connect you to parts of yourself you didnā€™t realize you could connect to.
I hope it proves to more people that the genre can be so much more than ā€œjust for little girlsā€ that parodies can be more than pointing and laughing, and that it can have themes beyond just, ā€œfriendshipā€.
Magical Girls can be so much more. You just, have to have an open mind about it.

Hiiii everyone, we are so back.
First up, Valen baby. I recoloured his cyberware! All of that golden hardware he has - his forearms, his neural wiring on his face, his piercings, his wedding ring - finally match. I recoloured them to be the same gold as his eyes and he matches so nicely that I've ascended into heaven. I love matching and symmetry in OC designs šŸ«
I also made Valen more freckle-y. I love freckles, so Valen's got even more on his shoulders and chest. Lastly, lore-accurate love marks; Valen's normally covered in both bitemarks and hickies. Why? Because Valen and his husband are (healthily) possessive of each other + leaving marks is a way for them to bond (they're also just extremely horny for each other). That bond with his husband is essential to his character, so I figured I'd add them in
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More ongoing projects under here ā™”
Second up, Vesper baby. Yes, my rarely seen second son is getting an awful lot of upgrades and will be reappearing soon because I missed him. He's back to being pink like his OG version! It'll be a little while yet before I've got him done, as I'm making him a new hair from almost scratch in Blender + giving him brand new tattoos. I'm very happy with how he's coming along so far, though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, I'm recolouring cyberware for public release on Nexus! I really needed more variety when it comes to OC creation + I haven't seen recolours of these before. So I figured If Not Me, Then Who. There's two ready to go and I'll likely do more if everything goes well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's everything for now!
Taglist ā™” if you'd like to opt in/opt out, please feel free! As always, there's no pressure to do these if you'd rather not. And if you've been tagged already/have done this already, then feel free to ignore! šŸ–¤

Seen at least one (1) person complain about Crocodile losing his "unique faceshape" (now having the same facial structure that 90% of OP men have) after episode 1086 came out and like
To be fair, yes, the shape of his head HAS changed since his first appearance in The Year 2000. The thing is, Toei's latest Crocodile Offering is frankly more in-line with how Oda drew Crocodile during Impel Down and Marineford than ever before. Like yeah he looks different, but this change isn't new
But that comment really did make me think about how FUNNY it is just how different Croc really looks from his first appearance, like. The evolution in how Oda draws the bastard is so facinating to me
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are from chapters 155, 160 and 205 respectively.
No massive changes happening here in the middle of the arc, but you can kinda tell that Oda was definitely still figuring out how this asshole was supposed to look as he got further into the Alabasta (which is perfectly normal), which just makes That First Appearance look even funnier with time because. Who the fuck is that lmaooo
Tumblr media
But then we get to see him briefly during Miss Goldenweek's cover story, this being from the cover of chapter 413! All things considdered, bastard hasn't changed that much, still looks pretty much the same as in Alabasta. His head is maybe a little less elongated than before but still, chin is quite pointy still
Tumblr media
And now we're in Impel Down at chapter 540. Again, dude looks about the same as he did before...
But it really doesn't take long for Oda to start reshaping this bastard's entire head at this point
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapters 544, 546, 578, and cover of chapter 584
The chin is easily the most obvious part, but you can tell Oda kind of defaulted to giving him that same ol' evenly square-ish head most his conventionally attractive characters have during these story arcs (instead of the elongated shape he originally had).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then we have the latest appearances, from 1082 and 1100
I do feel like comparing these to what's come before would be a little unfair considdering his health and eyesight and how those affect the artwork itself, but. They're there, for comparison's sake
But the point is still there. Crocodile's face shape has changed since his first appearance, but it's not like Toei was behind that, the change was (mostly) gradual and from Oda himself. And it mostly happened in 2008, so it's not new by any means either
Tumblr media
So really, all Toei did was just update his character model because ā¬†ļø is more accurate than ā¬‡ļø for One Piece right now
Tumblr media
Regardless. The sheer difference between the two is hysterical to me

XERO- XERO- HOW COULD YOU/SILLY?! YOUR LORD LUNAR AND SERVANT ECLIPSE POST HAS BEEN HOGGING MY BRAIN FOR THE PAST SIX HOURS!!
THEY ARE ROTATING IN MY BRAIN-
IT IS SO TRAGIC- IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL-
THERE'S SOMETHING SO EERY AND HAUNTING ABOUT IT-
A BROKEN GOD AND THEIR FAITHUL PRIEST. A BURNT OUT SUN AND A WITHERING EARTH, THAT SEEKS ITS LIGHT, DESPITE KNOWING, IT'LL NEVER BURN AGAIN.
THE WORSHIPPER, WHO HAS NOTHING, AND THUS CENTERS THEIR ENTIRE WORLD AROUND IT'S GOD. A GOD WHO LAYS ON A CRUMBLING PIECE OF LAND, UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN WAIT FOR THEIR END, YET STILL TRYING TO SOMEHOW REASSURE AND COMFORT THE ONLY ONE LEFT, THE ONLY ONE WHO CARES.
A BROTHER, A COMPANION, WHO BEGS, AND PLEADS, AND YELLS FOR HIS ONLY FRIEND, HIS ONLY REASON TO BE, TO WAKE UP AND DO SOMETHING. IT DOESN'T MATTER, WHAT. EVEN IF THEY TEASE HIM, AND CAUSE HIM TO RAGE, HE WON'T COMPLAIN, AS LONG AS THEY ARE STILL HERE.
A SHELL OF A PERSON, WHO, IN ANOTHER LIFE, WANTED NOTHING MORE THAN TO HEAR THOSE WORDS LEAVE THE OTHER'S MOUTH. WHO NOW CAN'T EVEN RESPOND, AND ONLY WATCH IN FADING DESPERATION, UNABLE TO CRY AND REACH OUT. UNABLE TO TELL HIM "I'm still here."
HE HAS LEFT THEM IN ANY OTHER WORLD, AND IN THIS ONE, THEY ARE GOING TO BE THE ONE TO LEAVE.
I CAN'T TAKE THIS/POS-
What messes me up even more about it is their relationship in canon.
They are not meant to be. They are always meant to be miles apart. They are always meant to hate one another, to bite and tear and rip each other apart. Their siblinghood, from the moment it was created, was doomed, not meant to lastā€¦
And yet.
They are still here, and they are together, and they care and love, and they beg for it to last.
In any other universe, Eclipse is meant to flash his teeth and leave.
In any other universe, Lunar is meant to long for something that can never be, until it becomes a part of them.
And yet, this time, this one time, it's different.
In this one universe, this single, crumbling place, they'll be at each other's side until the end.
This one time, Eclipse will stay, and instead of flashing his teeth, he'll cry and scream and embrace.
In this one universe, Lunar won't long for something unreachable, won't become a reflection of what they so despise. Instead, though they are unable to answer, they will know how much they were cherished and loved.
This one time, the spiteful creator, afraid of affection, worships and prays.
This one time, the creation, haunted by what they could never have, is worshipped and loved by the one they longed for.
This will be the first, and last time. This will be the only universe, where they mean everything to each other, where they are each other's worlds.
Had their situation been any different, they would kill one another. But as they are, they lay silently in the grass, waiting for the end, for one cannot fight, and the other sees no worth in a world without their god, the only person to get past their walls and reach for their hand.
And most tragically, no one will ever know them.
No one will ever know of their world.
No one will ever know, that they are capable of simply loving one another.
"Do you think we're brothers in another universe?"
No, They are not. They won't ever be again.
Their fates are intertwined endlessly, but it will always be twisted and cruel.
They are only brothers this one time. But maybe that's enough.
Maybe they are just happy, it was them.

THEY'RE A TOTAL OPPOSITE OF CANON..... Eclipse at Lunar's feet begging to hear something, anything, from them and Lunar only being able to watch no matter how hard they try...... They are right in each other's arms. There's nowhere else to go but they wouldn't leave if they could. Other Lunar and Eclipse duos could probably not even begin to fathom such a situation.....

Aforementioned Napoleonic AU! Martian !! I said it would just be a wip but then oops, I basically finished it! Ty to everyone who was interested :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really really proud of these I'm ngl! I rendered in a really different way than ever before and I'm very satisfied with it :D
Ramble about historical influences(basically me being a nerd about who I consider the F1 drivers of the Napoleonic era):
So I wanted to explain my thought process because I think that the specific context behind the uniforms I drew is very relevant, as I didn't just pick them on a whim.
I drew them in Hussars' uniforms(Austrian Empire = Red Bull, but like obviously not 100% accurate because the uniform colors are based off the RBR racesuits.) Hussars are, in my opinion, the F1 drivers of their time. Let me quote several things that led me to this conclusion:
"During the Napoleonic period, hussars, as in all armies, were employed as scouts, given raiding missions or despatched to harry and pursue a defeated enemy on the run. Mounted on light, nimble horses..."
"...Their flamboyant costume and their reputation for daredevil acts..."
"...developed a romanticized image of being dashing and adventurous.
Okay....so they're dashing and adventurous, riding specifically on fast, light horses, dressed in flamboyant outfits committing daredevil acts...sir that is literally an F1 driver!!! Tell me they aren't the historical predecessor to F1 drivers!!!
I have this big book of Napoleonic uniforms(yea I'm a nerd) and I was paging through it to see what uniforms I wanted to draw(I have a habit of drawing my one oc in the Napoleonic era. So when I started drawing fanart, I'm like of course I must draw them as this!) Austria's normal uniforms in this era are soooo boring compared to France's, so I was really šŸ˜’ about drawing them, but then I came across the Hussars, and then started noticing all these similarities and thought it was perfect. Also I need to mention the fact that Austria's royal cipher at the time was literally this:
Tumblr media
IT'S "F1", IT IS LITERALLY FUCKING F1, WHAT THE HELLLLL!?!?!?!? I had like a partial mental crisis coming across this, at that point it was destiny for me to draw this
*I forgot to include actual ref images šŸ˜, so here you go!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*I wrote most of his around when I started this drawing, which was all the way back in April. And it's really interesting to consider now that I was basically immersed in the history of the Austrian Empire for a month. I apologize to everyone in my life who had to endure my lecture on why Hussars are the F1 drivers of their time. But god I could not hold it back when I saw some of these uniforms in person. And it was cool to pull out this drawing, even if it was just a wip, and be like "oh hey I've drawn these!!" Anyways, I digress.
Obviously the martian drawing is a direct reference to this pic from Malaysia 2010:
Tumblr media
My thoughts on this picture:
Tumblr media
I almost wanted to draw Seb in the Austrian Kaiser's outfit, but it is nowhere near as slay as the Hussar uniform, so Hussar uniform it is!
I have many thoughts and opinions on the lore of this au so pls ask if you're curious but it's also just a lot.

the biggest reason why I think byler is endgame (or at the very least that miIeven ISN'T) is pretty damn simple: with the exception of season 1, mike's main plot has always revolved around will, and with the exception of season 1, will's main plot as also always revolved around mike. sure, they both have subplots with other characters and sure mike and el's relationship is given the narrative weight it deserves. but the truth is, mike and will's relationship IS placed above mike and el's within the narrative. and that's all you need to understand to know what relationships the writers are paying more attention to.
el's main plot in s2 was with hopper, in s3 with max, in s4 with brenner and henry. mike's in s2? the writers actively made the choice to separate him from the other boys and include him in will's possession plot. in s3? again, they made the choice to separate him and el early in the season to focus on the growing tension between him and will. s4? AGAIN they made the choice to separate him from el for the entire season. because his main character arc is WITH WILL.
and now we're seeing? byler bts, byler bts, byler bts. there have been multiple byler bts and only one miIeven bts. and sure, we don't really know for sure that mike's plot in s5 is going to center will, but it sure is telling that for the past three seasons mike and el's relationship hasn't been given screentime in favor of mike and will and then we aren't seeing ANY miIeven bts? maybe because yet again, mike's plot for the season centers will? and I can't confirm that means byler is going to be endgame, or even that miIeven are going to break up, but even if none of this happens, byler still got the storylines, byler still got the effort, byler still got the screentime. and I will always count that as more of a win than who mike ends up with

...BIG FEELS AND BIG PLOT DEVELOPMENTS AT THE END OF THAT BOOK, HUH
#Tyto reads WoF#i know it's not the most pressing issue what with the vengeful ex-Queen and the murderous sister and all#but I still want to point out how alarming it is that the new crew are all going to be wearing seemingly radioactive rocks as jewelry now#Turtle please don't pick up strange rocks that give off their own heat for the love of all that's good#ANYWAY yeah what the actual frick is going on with Darkstalker huh. I genuinely do NOT know whether he's trustworthy or not#desperately lonely and unfairly demonized? absolutely. truly cares about Moon as a friend? I think so.#capable of integrating peacefully into modern dragon society without letting his own ego turn him into the monster he denies ever being?#....... šŸ˜¬ remains to be seen#god and there's Scarlet's mysterious new accomplice(?) with the maddeningly vague physical description and also THE SCROLL(!!!!)#and i just realized we failed to get resolutions in this book for EITHER the vision of Turtle attacking Anemone OR#Flame's unique and frightening ability to sense and/or attack mindreaders????#where the HECK are we going with Flame I am going lowkey INSANE over him#ugh frick and Umber and Sora are both on the run too...!! this book is nearly as cliffhangery as Dark Secret#(though thankfully i prepared for this by checking the next book out ahead of time so i wouldn't have to wait LOL)#uhh buhh final thoughts before i force myself to go to sleep:#I love Moon and everything going on with her but I do feel like on some level it's even more of a slap in the face for poor Starflight#that the only tribe to get multiple POV characters in this first. like. extended arc(?) appears to be the NightWings#and Starflight himself doesn't get any of the tribe's unique defining features or abilities#i mean i guess the same is sort of true of Sunny and yes i know it was the POINT of book 4 that the tribe had no powers#but still idk it just feels like kicking the poor boy when he's already down. in addition to him literally getting beaten up again#(... now watch me be a total fool and the arc actually extends past book 8 or something making this point moot lol)#(I'm only assuming it ends at 8 bc that's where the previews in the back of the previous books have stopped)#EDIT: LOL yep turns out this arc does extend out to book 10 and the other POVs are Turtle and Qibli so I stand corrected.#that's what I get for nightblogging

A couple weeks ago, on 4/22/23, I purchased my dream car - a Jeep Grand Cherokee!! This has been my dream car for the last 6 years and I have been waiting for this moment for so long! As a new chapter of my life is about to begin as a veterinarian, I felt it was time to gratefully say goodbye to my Honda which carried me through the entire veterinary school journey, from applying to vet school all the way through all 4 years as a vet student. But with graduation right around the corner, I decided it was time to upgrade to a 4x4 and treat myself to the car of my dreams! Welcome to the vet journey, Cocoa (short for Chocolate Chip)! šŸ¤Ž

Yeah hello hi I've been falling deep into the Crocodad Rabbithole and my brain is being consumed by small crocodile-shaped worms
So I've done what any reasonable person would do, I went back to rewatch some scenes from Alabasta and Marinford to psychoanalyze Crocodile and try to figure out what the fuck his deal is because genuinely the more I think about it the more questions I have and the more I want answers. And because I'm deranged I need to write all my thoughts down into an incoherent essay and release it into the world
So please, come along with me while and let's be Extremely Normal About Sir Crocodile Together and speculate about his ~Secret Past~
Tumblr media
Quick note, my quickest access to some of these episodes is either through unsubbed episodes (not bothering with getting screenshots since there's no subs, also my Japanese is plenty good enough to not need it here) or through Ancient, Questionable Fansubs so don't get too hung up on the phrasing in the subbed screenshots- like they're not entirely inaccurate but y'know
The reason I want to do this is just that... Like I've been a fan of OP since 2008, when I was in middle school. I don't think I ever really tried to think deeper about this series in general at that time, because I was a kid. For a long time to me Crocodile had just been Some Greedy Asshole who tried to take over a country to obtain a tool of mass destruction and IDK destroy the world? Just a very classic Bad Guy McVillianMan, because I had not bothered to think about his character and question anything before.
But now I have brainworms due to the Crocodad Theory, and this is fucking One Piece, you never fucking know how deep a rabbithole can go with this bloody series. So let's go, let's try to figure out what the fuck is Crocodile's deal, because I need to get these brainworms out of my fucking system
Tumblr media
I just want to start with this one quick throw-away line because it's kind of a sidenote. Also like. This is such a funny fucking thing for Crocodile to say if he is Luffy's dad. Like.
Tumblr media
That's so fucking funny if he's Luffy's dad holy shit
But what really gets me here is that like... Like while I'm like 70% sure Crocodile is trans, there's still a part of me that's like "there's no fucking way Crocodad is real". Let alone, this be some kind of a hint Oda planted to suggest that this early on. Like it sounds absurd. And yet at this point in One Piece, Oda had already started planning out and laying out the groundwork for so many lore and plot-relevant concepts, ranging from shit like everything about Robin, the Poneglyphs, the Ancient Weapons etc. He had already started the "Prince Sanji ARG" (aka dropping the tiniest fucking hints to Sanji's Hidden Backstory that people were able to pick up on and make accurate predictions with about Sanji's backstory). There's fucking Laboon, and about a bajillion other things. And possibly most importantly, by this point Oda had already revealed both Luffy's father and grandfather to the readers, not to mention he even introduced Ace and vaguely hinted at Sabo! It's not like Oda had everything perfectly planned out from the very begining, that is objectively not the case at all. But it also literally would not be unlike Oda to drop hints to a character's backstory like this. He has been doing that for years, and had already started by the time we met Crocodile. Like it feels insane and yet it's perfectly plausible. And if he had Luffy's dad, grandfather and two siblings planned out in his head already at this point, it should not be that much of a stretch to believe that Oda knows and no doubt has known for the past two decades who Luffy's mom is (regardless of if that's Crocodile or not)
All this to say. Crocodile's comment about what Cobra said to Vivi when they reunited is a funny, sarcastic comment. But it would take a whole new meaning if Crocodad was real. Because it really would be perfectly normal if he did/had wondered what he would say to his long lost child if they were ever reunited. And really that just makes his roast turn sad.
Anyways
In Alabasta, we do get a very clear image that Crocodile does not like the World Government, not just because he's a Big Meanie Pirate who wants to conquer the world, but because he does seem to look down on how the Marines + World Government do their "justice" (which, y'know, knowing what we know now about the Government. Fair. That's entirely fair.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also dislikes Vivi's "idealism" of wanting to save everyone without bloodshed or anyone losing their lives (especially for her sake)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We learn that he is a broken man with broken dreams. Also he seems to be aware where he (supposedy) belongs in the Grand Line's power hierarchy, as in, he needs Pluton because he knows he's not strong enough in combat that he could take down anyone, let alone the World Government by himself (though he would still make a beeline for Whitebeard's head the second he saw him at Marinford, which, y'know, bold move)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course, we learn in Impel Down that Crocodile and Iva-chan have some beef. We can not say for 100% sure what that beef is (like the theory he's trans is very obvious and plausible, but until Oda spills the beans we won't know for a fact what the beef is), but we know that they knew each other. And if Crocodile knew Iva-chan, a high-ranking founding member of the Revolutionary Army, then it is genuinely plausible that Crocodile could also have known Dragon and/or been a member of the Revolutionary Army as well.
Since overthrowing the World Nobles and the Government are the Revolutionary Army's goal, the fact that they're trying to obtain weapons and people for their cause etc, Crocodile's view of the Government and his "Operation Utopia" does kind of align with the Revolutionary Army's
But we did also learn from Iva that "Crocoboy" isn't quite trustworthy. Needless to say, even if Croc used to be a part of the Army, he most certainly left YEARS ago, and clearly not on good terms.
Tumblr media
Also, an interesting note, is that at Marineford when Luffy and co finally arrive at the battlefield (episode 466, 17:25 minutes in), when Garp spots the group, he makes a specific comment about Crocodile being there together with the revolutionaries and the prison escapees, believing they can't all be here to fight for the same cause. Which is an interesting thing for him to point out specifically. Like Jinbei was another powerful person who entered that battlefield at the same time, and while Jinbei did clarify to Sengoku that he's quitting being a Shichibukai and was there to save Ace, it's still maybe a little odd Garp didn't think it was worth mentioning that Jinbei had also "allied" with the prison escapees and the revolutionaries to enter the battlefield. Like it was Crocodile only whom he thought needed to be pointed out. I don't think Garp's comment adds at all to Crocodad because it would frankly make little to no sense (like we're all assuming Crocodile didn't know Dragon's lastname, which is why he never realized Luffy was his son (despite knowing Luffy's lastname), but if Crocodile knew Garp was Dragon's father then surely he'd realize Dragon's lastname would be Monkey, right), but it could maybe add to the idea that Crocodile might've been a part of the Revolutionary Army in the past, as Garp could be aware of something like that, thus he'd be puzzled by Crocodile's presencee. Point is, it's an interesting comment, make of it what you will
EDIT 2: Ended up going back to reread parts of Marineford and turns out ^that^ was an anime-only addition from Toei. Like Garp does make a comment about how these people probs aren't at the battlefield for the same reasons but did not specifically point out Crocodile or anything. So. I wasted enough time adding these paragraphs to the post, I ain't deleting 'em. But y'know.
Tumblr media
EDIT: Minor addition, because I just remembered how Crocodile really went like out of his way to taunt Vivi about how she "can't stop the rebellion" and save her people. Which, y'know, is a perfectly normal Villian Thing To Do. But we know Crocodile does not think fondly of the World Nobles just like he dislikes the Government. Even if Cobra was a "good monarch" who genuinely cared for his people, he was still a king, and the Nefertari family and the Kingdom of Alabasta were a part of the World Government. The thing Crocodile specifically wanted to destroy. And this is just another one of those "surely that wasn't somekinda foreshadowing" but god fucking dammit what if Crocodile telling a(n unknowing) representative of the World Government that she can't stop "the rebellion", or the revolution if I may, (regardless of if he's allied with them or not) was actually meant to be like foreshadowing. Oda I swear to fucking god---
Anyway, so, Crocodile might've been a part of the Revolutionary Army at one point (the army was formed after the Ohara Incident 22 years ago, and for Crocodad Theorizing, Luffy was born 19 years ago), but if he did he must have left on bad terms for unknown reasons, and we can tell that although his goals in general could vaguely match that of the Revolutionaries, his methods most certainly don't.
Whether or not his methods and his worldview tie to his leaving the Army is unknown. Because we don't really know when and how his worldview was formed.
Like did Crocodile leave the Army because he became a cynical asshole who was willing to make any kind of sacrifice for his goals (thus he no longer fit in with the rest of the Revolutionary Army), realized he was far too weak to ever become Pirate King and thus decided to go looking for Pluton? Or did Crocodile suggest to the Army they should try to obtain an Ancient Weapon to keep casulties to a minimum (still in line with the Army), only ending up getting kicked out (big weapon bad), and soon realizing he had no chance at making a change in the world without "cracking a few eggs"?
Like it doesn't nececarily make a massive difference,, since the end result is still the same, but it does kind of affect the context and how one might view him, right
Of course, there's then the Forbidden Third Option, that Crocodile left due to
Gender issues (internalized shame of being trans and not having it in him to stay around people who had known him)
Postpartum depression
Dragon just divorced Crocodile either due to being straight (in a sad, accepting way) or due to being simply unaccepting and frankly homophobic, regardless, Crocodile leaves with a broken heart
Something else and/or a combo of the above, really, we could speculate endlessly here about what could've happened
(Though I will say that Crocodile's '"trust issues"' and how he views people as disposable could like. I dunno. Be explained if he had gone through some heartbreak and was left permanently unable to open up to people, let alone trust anyone)
Tumblr media
I dunno, there's a lot of options, a lot of things to considder.
But there is one more thing that I do want to note on as it could potentially debunk the Crocodad Theory entirely.
It's that Iva-chan didn't know Dragon had a son.
Tumblr media
(Episode 441, 9:50 minutes) By which I mean, Iva-chan wasn't shocked to find out Luffy was Dragon's son, rather, they were shocked there was a son to begin with. (To the point they thought Ace was also Dragon's son until Luffy cleared it up for them later) While it's not a massive leap to believe that Crocodile and Dragon knew each other (since Crocodile knew Iva-chan), nor is it a massive leap to believe that Iva-chan transed Crocodile's gender after having Luffy... It does become a bit of a leap to believe Iva-chan didn't know about Dragon having a child with Crocodile before giving Croc the Magic HRT. Like if they had a relationship that resulted in a baby and a divorce, how did Iva not know about any of it, especially when it's more than likely that Iva could not have transitioned Crocodile until after the baby was born (let's not think about how Iva-chan's powers would work on a pregnant person too much)
We do also get this flashback (in episode 441, immidiately after Luffy reveals his dad's identity to Iva) where Iva-chan questions Dragon about how he always stares out towards East Blue when the wind blows, wondering if Dragon has family out there whom he's thinking about (Dragon refusing to comment on it). This does very much confirm that regardless of who Dragon had Luffy with, Iva has no fucking clue who, where and how any of that happened. And althought I personally feel like Iva not knowing would debunk Crocodad, if Crocodile still somehow was Luffy's dad, Iva-chan would canonically not know about it. If Iva didn't know Dragon had a relationship that resulted in a baby, then regardless of if Iva even knew Crocodile got pregnant once, they would not be able to connect those dots.
Tumblr media
Now let's be clear, there's many potential scenarios where Crocodad could still be real, scenarios that could explain why and how Iva-chan didn't know about Luffy nor about Dragon and Crocodile having a relationship*. Like it would not be difficult at all to come up with an explanation for it. But in my mind, I feel like the more you have to figure out and explain how the theory could still be plausible, the less plausible it actually feels. Like the more I need to go out of my way to explain it, the more forced it seems.
*(For example, maybe the two kept their relationship a secret, and when Crocodile got pregnant he """left on a mission""" that happened to take like 4-10 months, during the time realizing he was trans. Once the baby had arrived he returned the baby to Dragon in secret for him to deal with, got a divorce for one reason or another*, and sought out Iva-chan to start a new life, Iva thus never found out about anything, just knew that Crocodile left one day after coming out. Like that's one plausible scenario.)
*Hey remember the potential Forbidden Reasons to why Crocodile might've left the Army? What if it was Dragon's and/or Crocodile's idea? Remember how when Jinbei is trying to escape Marinford with the unconcious Luffy, Crocodile tells Jinbei to do better job at "protecting those he wants to protect", a line that felt really sudden and odd coming from Crocodile of all people? What if the two knew their child would be in grave danger if he was ever raised within the army (absolutely not a place for a baby)? What if they knew their baby would become a target for the World Government to hunt, much like Roger's lost child was, if the Government found out Dragon had a baby? What if they wanted to make sure nothing bad ever happened to their baby and were willing to do anything to protect the baby? Even if it meant they'd never see their child grow up? Even if it meant hiding your child from your best friend, pretending to have a horrible fallout with them and transing your gender because Oda doesn't know what gender dysphoria is? Just so nobody would ever find out you had a child?
Mind you. I do not want anybody to think this is an actual argument for Crocodad. Like I could write a dozen different fanfics about how Crocodile could be Luffy's other dad, and they would all be just as much pure speculation with nothing to support them as the above suggestions. It is an example of what could have happened, and a deeply interesting thought, but it is just a theory at best.
In the end, it doesn't really matter though, because until the day Oda reveals Luffy's mom and/or Crocodile's backstory to us, we will truly never know for sure What The Fuck Crocodile's Deal Is
And I'll be just stuck with these brainworms, making myself sad by thinking about sad scenarios where Crocodad could be real, because truly, if it's canon, ain't no way it won't be sad
Tumblr media
EDIT 3: Originally I thought it'd be good enough if I just rewatched some parts here and there, but in the end I just fucking absolutely caved the fuck in and went and reread The Good Parts of Marineford. Mainly because I knew I was forgetting things and Toei adding/changing things can affect a character reading. Also it was just going to be easier to go through the manga and literally just all of Crocodile's scenes into an image folder for easier browsing, mainly because there's so much shit that happens between those scattered scenes it can be hard to like focus on one thing (especially if you're trying to specifically FIND those scattered scenes and appearances)
So yeah. Coming back a few days later to add shit to this god forsaken post. I need help
Actually changed my mind and made a separate post to continue this nonsense, enjoy
