Top 20: Los Campesinos! — All Hell

As I often say, I don't always have a record of the year. In 2024 I did, and it was not particularly close. That's not just because of how good I think All Hell is, although as the recency bias fades with time I still think it's their best album and I can't say there's anything else the whole year that I enjoyed more. But that's not fully extricable from my relationship with the band dating back to before the first album, the band I've seen live the most times, one of a relatively few that I care enough about to get a tattoo about it.

When a favourite like that goes away for seven years and then suddenly there's a new song, I don't know about you, but I feel some trepidation. Even when that sort of thing works out, it usually takes some time. At this point I think NO BLUES might be my second favourite LC! LP but it took a while for me to truly warm up to it (even though I did like it when it came out). So I don't know if I had a better five minutes all year then when I first hit play on "Feast of Tongues" already emotionally crouched in a defensive position, preparing to tell myself it was promising and I'd probably grow to love it, and then

oh, it turns out it's one of the best songs they've ever done

and I listen to it about ten times in a row (I don't do that) and I'm sending the link to various friends I know like LC! (I don't do that) and even getting people I see in person to maybe give it a listen (I don't do that). Even after really loving the other songs they released ahead of the album/their Toronto show, I still showed up for the Bandcamp listening party ready to not be blown away. But I can honestly say that All Hell is the first time in my living memory that a record hit me this hard immediately and still sounds good months (and many plays) later.

I know I'm in deep here because the first few times I listened to the acoustic More Hell EP they put out I was ready to write an essay on how brilliant the reworkings are (this is of interest to virtually nobody, I know). And the live show... again, I've seen them 15 times or something and this might have been the best one. The genuine joy of having a beloved act show up on very little notice and suddenly be even better than they'd been before... I hope we all get that sometime in 2025. We are so fucking back, if no-one got me I know LC! got me, etc etc.

after i wrote SOCIOPATHIC LEECH and RIGHTS TO MY WRONGS, i was like 'okay, this is the style we're going for, lets do some sort of project in this particular style' i was pretty dead set on an EP since i'd just done an album. so to answer your question, yes and no!

i wish i could put something significant here. im sure theres some psychologist out there who could tell me that the song represents something about me. i was feeling alienated at the time, hopefully this helps? 🎀 Band #1:

Best pop punk band ever. Not only do they have one of the best vocalists in the genre, but their music is so timeless. I've listened to my favourite song of theirs hundreds of times over the years and I still get excited every time it comes on. There's a reason why their music is still so critically acclaimed to this day.

🎀 Band #2:

I'm sorry but this band has some of the most delusional fans ever. You guys really interpret everything as a sign that they're recording music together. I know most of it is jokes but just because the bassist posts a photo of his bass, that doesn't mean the band is recording together. He could literally just be playing for fun. I mean I'm dying for new music from them too, but come on.

This is a soloist, but I still wanted to include her. This person's second album is her best one and is way underappreciated. One of her most popular songs is from this album, but I think there are songs on that album that are far better. The opening track is especially great and I wish she had more songs that were that heavy. I love her pop punk stuff, but I still wish she made more post-grunge albums.

I really wish this band got more attention. I feel like people used to talk about them a lot during like 2012-2014, but now they've been kind of forgotten. It's really a shame because I love their music. It makes me really sad that a lot of the female-fronted emo and scene bands besides Paramore have been almost forgotten.

I think this band is an example of a side project that's better than the band that it's derivative of. Their vocalist's original band is also good and I have a few songs from them that I really like, but with this band, I just think their music is a lot more enjoyable. Their first album is probably my favourite dance rock album and I'm really glad that they've reunited.

I wish other songs by this band were as popular as their biggest one. I understand why it's their biggest, because it is very good, but their other songs are great too and they're still making good stuff to this day.

I honestly think this person's music is really good and really didn't deserve all of the hate it got when it was released. Everyone said that she was ripping off Avril Lavigne, and while there are definite similarities between their music, I think her music is pretty solid. Her first album is especially good. All of the songs are really catchy and I would love to see more music from her.

🎀 Band #8:

This band is so over hated. People hate on their vocalist for things that he did when he was a teenager, which I always thought made no sense. A lot of people also seem to hate this band because their most recent albums have been generic pop albums, which also doesn't make sense to me. There are people doing way worse stuff, plus you could also just listen to something else. Like the way people talk about their music makes it sound like they're being forced to listen to it, when they're not.

🎀 Band #9:

I think I like this band more as people than actual musicians. I do like their music, but I don't think it's anything that special and I can kind of seen why some people call it generic. Their lead singer is one of the most genuine people I've seen in rock and I loved watching the band's Bryan Stars interviews when I was a new fan. I don't agree with people who say their music is bad (their first album is way over hated btw), but I can see why some people might not like their music that much.

I seriously do not understand how people listen to this band. I know a lot of people stopped listening to them after the allegations, but their lyrics are still so gross and icky. And the fact that there are people who still listen to this band and post stuff about their lead singer like 'They don't make guys like him anymore' is so gross because most of their lyrical content is about literal grooming and paedophilia. Also, there are most definitely still guys like him out there, the only difference is they aren't hiding behind a scene boy façade.

1. Neru I just adore Neru! Neru my beloved. I know they haven't been very active recently, but that doesn't mean I've been listening to their songs any less. Their music feels so raw and genuine, like they woul never sugarcoat the cruelty of reality. Their dark lyrics are very cathartic, and I feel like they always leave open space to be okay despite, you know? And I love the rock aspect of their music! This was also the year I found out Neru has been suffering severe problems to their health, and their Twitter messages really touched me, I hope they get better soon, I wish them all the best! Their music really touches me and helps me get through the day :)

2. PinocchioP PinocchioP my beloved! Really love the unique way they tune Miku, you can immediately recognize their tuning. And their music is great! Been listening to their META album this year. God-ish is lots of fun, but I especially love Common World Domination, it's the kind of song that whenever it comes around in shuffle I have to relisten ten times before being able to move on (≧▽≦)

3. Iroha Well, they've made my favourite song ever Meltdown, so they can't not make it to the list, you know. Rin is far from being my favourite voicebank (despite probably being my favourite Vocaloid character), but I love how Iroha tunes their voicebank. Moon is another great song with wonderful tuning.

4. Ryo I feel like I've listened to them a little less than the past years, but still incredibly solid music. From Melt to Odds&Ends, banger after banger after banger, there's not a single song of their discography I don't like.

5. Cö shu Nie Well, to be fair I don't listen about them *that* much (in all honesty, I've just been going through the same 1229 songs long vocaloid playlist in the last six months or so), but they've been my favourite band in the past years, so I feel like they deserve to be mentioned. 1. Meltdown by Iroha ft. Kagamine Rin Remember when someone asked my favourite song was and I spent 2k words talking about this song? Lol. Still first place. Found out a nice Rose cover this year, and got a bit more acquainted with the Divela remix (the cosMo Hard-R.K.mix is still my favourite tho).

2. Melt by Ryo ft. Hatsune Miku This song is just <3 Makes me happy. Life is beautiful. It's so spontaneous and cute! I love this Meiko cover too.

3. Bitter Choco Decoration by syudou ft. Hatsune Miku Append (Soft) Hhhhhhhh this song is so good. The eerie vibes are addicting. Seriously threatening to climb higher.

3. Patchwork Staccato by Toa ft. Hatsune Miku Append (Soft) Tied with Bitter Choco. I love this song so much it's so melancholic... I love me a song that is a little cruel. OOF bear with me on this because I'm not a swiftie and so don't know a TON of taylor swift stuff

Firstly, I will say that Steve Randle in the modern day would LOVE Taylor Swift even if he'd never admit it (kind of off topic but for my youngins in this fandom who are interested in men, my litmus test for good guys is that they have to have at least one female pop star whose music they genuinely secretly love- in my experience, if a guy genuinely loves some pop artist and her bubblegum songs you've found a keeper) and his favourite album would be Red. To me, I thinkhis favourite song would be 22 (even though he's seventeen lmao)

Soda would probably lover some on her sadder stuff, 'I can do it with a broken heart' would be right up there as would 'all too well', but I could also see him listening to "red" and "we are never getting back together'' on repeat when he reaches the anger stage of his breakup with Sandy

for folklore it’s such a hard pick because i resonate with so many tracks from this album but probably seven!! the song itself is so pretty, the way it builds into something really beautiful and elegant. i’ve always resonated really tightly with the meaning behind this song and i think it really encapsulates the feeling of being a little girl so well. thinking that the awful things that happen to your friends are genuine ghosts or monsters, planning on running away and playing pretend to cheer your friend up, that glow of childlike innocence. sometimes i can’t listen to it because it makes me cry but it’s one of the most beautiful songs i’ve ever heard

for evermore it’s COWBOY LIKE ME!!!! my favourite taylor swift song ever from my favourite album EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SONG IS JUST SO SO SO PERFECT. the duet and the soothing instrumental and the way it progresses and the storytelling in the lyrics. i often see debates over whether cowboy like me is a love song or a tragedy and honestly i really do think it’s a tragedy. “forever is the sweetest con” is probably the most tragic love lyric i’ve ever heard in my life whilst the song is still so incredibly romantic. it’s also so destiel coded and if i can’t find a fic based on this song i really think i’ll have to write it myself

for midnights it’s high infidelity!! midnights is so full of gems and honestly i only have two or three skips but there’s something about high infidelity that scratches my brain just right. it might be because honestly it sounds like an evermore track, but the way she sings the lyrics and the way it sounds is just PERFECT. i honestly think i like midnights more than reputation which i know is a super hot take

What is your favourite genre of music? Or if you don't know how to categorize the music you listen to (like me), what is your favourite song? Or band? Or album? Something like that.

ohhhhh #1 question i am categorically incapable of being normal about <3

i typically just define my favorite music as "loud" or "aggressive" or "abrasive" bc most stuff that fits those descriptors will be in my faves regardless of the genre.

a more specific answer is that there are 3 main things i've noticed that will typically make me go apeshit without fail and they are: 1. hardstyle/gabber/industrial hardcore- sorta basskick 2. sickass metal guitar shredding 3. huge dramatic grandiose orchestral

if something has 1 of these i will probably like it, if it has 2 it will be a top fave, and all 3.... well i have yet to find it yet but im sure i will Ascend. here are examples of said top fave combos.

laur covers hardstyle+orchestral and i Cannot Get Enough of his shit man it goes so fucking crazy hard

metal+orchestral is unquestionably ruled by nightwish, but theyre not on bandcamp and i dont feel like finding other links so this one goes to the still-very-fucking-awesome runner-up, POWERWOLF

riikira and rabbitjunk hit metal+hardstyle, though it's less strictly hardstyle and more just general hardcore* electronica. if its got crazy amens its enough who cares. i put the ones that use actual kicks for the sake of illustrating the point here but these tracks are both pretty far from my faves from each lmao *hardcore referring to hardcore [edm] in this case, even though the genre these belong to is called "digital hardcore", which instead refers to hardcore [punk]. it's a mess out here. did you know theres two completely different things called doomcore where one is derived from metal and the other is derived from hardcore. and you never know which itsd going to be when you click on something in the doomcore tag. im dying squirtle

anyway on the other side of the hardstyle+metal combo is kobaryo [with his alias blaxervant], who's much more about the hardcore side of things and just has the metal as flair, but it is still: the best shit ever

laur also on occasion hits this side of hardstyle+metal becaue he just likes using whatever the fuck instruments

there are of course many other things i love a lot, primary examples being ambient/atmospheric, folk, and anything with a lot of Texture. im not gonna get into all that but i do have an extended list of faves/recs from the last time i was asked about this and went insane abt it. it took forever to make and my actual recs are not entirely the same as my Faves so im putting it on here too.

i keep these curated to the top of my bandcamp profile so they're the first things that display there. it's a bit old by now and some have since been shuffled out, but it's still like 80% accurate.

as for the actual recs: the angel's message is there because it's my fave brand of intense and chaotic stuff and want it to kill you full force. it already has some tracks up there so im not re-linking it

this one i recommend just because i think it's really interesting and out there and i'm curious what other people think of this sort of stuff. it's also the prime example of what i mean when i talk about Textures in music.

wolfgun is an actual rec for being genuinely just really good music. probably the most objectively cool/platonically enjoyable thing in my library

Ranking all of Ariana grande albums. For context im a huge fan, im 20 so was in that age range that essentially grew up seeing her career flourish and I’ve relistened to all of em. Theres a lot of music (particularly pop music because ive been through many phases of hating pop) that’s from my youth that i would never go back to, but never Ariana Grande she’s the artist of our generation.

Also none of them are bad

1- eternal sunshine- feels like a culmination of all of the different styles she’s done into one album, beautifully personal while also being optimistic and positive, even when the topic is sad. This one definitely grew on me when it first came out i liked it but it didn’t rlly have super strong feelings over it,but she recently dropped some live sessions of some of the songs and it RLLY blew me away, which caused me to revisit the album and appreciate it for what it is. It’s an album about genuine healing, whereas ‘thank u, next’ was projecting healing. The album art is simple and gorgeous. In terms of the concept, around the movie ‘eternal sunshine of the spotless mind’: this is my favourite movie OAT, always in my letterboxd top four. Its been a favourite since i was 16 and my initial reaction that she was naming the album after it was ‘eeee🙄’ just bc i cant help but be a gatekeeper and didn’t want all her fans making it their entire personality and acting like it’s their fav movie too😭. And tbf I didn’t see much of that so im cool w it now. I totally see how Ariana saw the connections between these songs and the movie and she’s also said so many times she’s a huge Jim carrey fan so i think it was a beautiful choice. Some have said the ‘concept album’ idea, creating a character ‘peaches’ (ref to clementine) is way to get around her divorce NDA, i dont rlly care either way. I’m a HUGEEE fan of the Jon Brion’s score/soundtrack for the movie listened to it so many times so i was hoping to get some of that soft, minimalistic, dreamy Elliot smith style. But the closest thing to that was probably the title track (where she sampled Imogen heaps ‘just for now’), and it’s so beautiful.

2-positions- its an underrated brilliant album which should’ve got way more hype that it did. It feels like an elevated, mature version of ‘Dangerous Woman’ and had some great features, her and the weeknd are always incredible and the ballad is beautiful. It’s a shock to me that people were underwhelmed by her and doja on motive bc it was so fun and always gets me movin. She also worked w Leon Thomas on ‘safety net’ which is one of her most magical, beautiful songs she’s ever done. Also she looked so good during this era no offense to her eternal sunshine style it’s so pretty and much more my style, but brown hair high ponytail 60s makeup suits her so well😭. I definitely think its a different experience listening to it post divorce, seeing a lot of the song are v sexy and giving honeymoon phase, but then ull hear lyrics like ‘acts so possessive and crazy, but ik its jus cuz u love me’ and songs like off the table and pov which show her vulnerability and insecurity. I LIKED IT.

3- dangerous woman- i was obsessed w her before this album but this got me OBSESSED. It’s a complete classic where she rlly showed her RnB skills with her pop skills and solidified her presence in the music industry. The songs are classics and for the most part aged pretty well. They bring you back to that era of music yet still work in this era and people love that. Like she performed into you at the met gala this year and its had a whole resurgence and reminded people of the pop star she truly is, like that fixed her image more than ‘yes, and?’ did. I will say there may be too many songs on it bc some of the pop songs are pretty forgettable. But when i say that know I NEVER MEAN JASONS SONG. That was a hidden gem of a diss track fr.

4- sweetener- sweetener and thank u next had always flip flopped for me in rankings but this recent relisten has made me realise yeah this has totally aged super well. Pharrells producing is super cool and unique and she’s definately implemented that style going forward, even though fans weren’t super receptive of it it doesn’t feel dated at all. If anything she was ahead of the curve. Girl literally started everyone typing in just lowercase and the upside down thing, all style and fashion choices she made during this time ud catch girls in school doing it too including me she was unstoppable. REM is iconic, and theres underrated gems like her cover of goodnight n go, and borderline. Also i wanna say people joke abt the song pete davidson abt how she shouldn’t have called it that, but like hearing the vibes of the song and the fact that theres so many jokes abt Pete Davidson being a women magnet it’s genius. Like imagine a small indie artist singing that cute dreamy love song and calling it pete davidson it would be fucking hilarious.

5- thank u, next- ik this is her pièce de résistance and i think it’s a great album, you rlly do get the sense that its all her emotions that were overwhelming her that she needed to get out as soon as possible. The trap style is great, with ‘in my head’ being a standout, it’s evident comparing to the rest of her stuff it’s her equivalent to a rebellious phase. It’s superrrr personal, almost too personal, not for the listeners but for her considering she said she didn’t wanna put ‘ghostin’ on the album but scooter kept pushing it. Beautiful song, but so sad. I just dont find myself revisiting a lot of them apart from in my head bc they just feel so of that time and no longer my thing.

6- yours truly- rlly cute album especially for a debut beginning of her black and white yet feline and feminine aesthetic. Luvvvedd the tenth anniversary lives she did, The Way will forever be a classic. The right there mv was everything to me as a kid. Her n big Sean were so good together their songs always hit. Putting this low bc why was there random EDM breaks at the end of some song nOt necessary gurl. And also she’s improved SO MUCH since this and it was such a strong debut its crazy

7- my everything- dont get me wrong this is great album started showing us her rnb n hip hop side, love her songs w big Sean, best mistake is one of her best songs, also be my baby (she always killed it w cashmere cat). Just the songs aren’t anything super crazy or unique theyre just 2014 hit singles if she kept up w this style instead of maturing w dangerous woman she would not be where she is now. But remember when she started a whole challenge of trying to sit on a stool bc of this album cover? Shes always got people talking even when she’s not trying.
