Interior Chinatown, it's about gentrification, it's about generational trauma, it's about community building, it's about racist scapegoating, it's about police corruption, it's about the pressures of immigrant parenthood, it's about the different expectations for different children and the way it can break them, it's about the meat grinder of capitalism replacing and reusing the lower class like nameless murder victims in a police procedural, it's about the system and its inescapablity, it's about the falacy of the American Dream, it's about urban decay and being abandoned by economic forces, it's about cultural appropriation and tokenism, it's about grief, it's about Jimmy O. Yang kicking ass and looking sexy
#interior chinatown#ignore me#i enjoyed it#very well written#and clever in the way it utilizes genre conventions to satirize the genres shortcomings

I love johnny as a character but I think it's kinda crazy how this show straight up refuses to have him acknowledge that he bullied daniel and that he was wrong for it. the writers really did the "both were equally wrong" thing and that was so bizarre to me
For the longest time I was mind boggled by how a show that claims to be about Johnny Lawrence’s redemption could possibly fail to even truly acknowledge his original crime of bullying Daniel. But more and more it has become evident that when this show said “redeem” they didn’t mean from being a bully or an absent father, they meant from being a loser. Which is why this show will undoubtedly end for Johnny with a trophy in one hand and a trophy wife in the other, a brand new redemption baby, and his still neglected son and childhood victim standing happily by his side. Johnny will have won at life without having to ever meaningfully change or make amends for his wrongdoings, and it will all be hollow and meaningless because of it—a depressingly ironic parallel to his season 1 AVT victory.
#if i thought it was in anyway intentional i woukd applaud these writers for creating such a cynical satire of the redemption genre#but unfortunately. that is not the case.#i think originally there was an intention to redeem him in the true sense of the word. but somewhere along the way that disappeared#whatever. i know im going to get called a johnny hater#i dont hate johnny. but i do hate the narrative they’ve trapped him in#a character doomed by the confines of the narrative he’s trapped in never to grow or change. tragic!#asks#personal#anonymous#ck negativity#cobra kai

Came here because of your FMA Post-Canon GreedLing series and now I want to read/watch/idfk what this is SVSSS now. You've infected me and now I need to do research

YESSS READ MY SICKOS NOVEL!!
my very basic pitch: SVSSS is Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, a Chinese transmigration novel! the premise is that Shen Yuan is the #1 anti-fan of a trashy stallion novel -- he likes the monsters and the little crumbs of plot and loves the protagonist, but fucking hates literally everything else about it. when he finishes it, he's so overcome with rage about the ending that it literally kills him, and his dying thoughts are "dumbfuck author, dumbfuck novel." much to his surprise, he wakes up as the central villain of that novel with a transmigration system essentially telling him "you think you can do better? just fucking try it buddy"
it's a hilarious series, and a very quick read! the characters are really fun, the two main characters are completely deranged (a classic example of "I can fix him" *makes him worse*), and the balance between ridiculous humor and genuine emotion is excellent. also, as a loving satire of stallion novels/BL novels/webnovels in general, it has a lot of interesting things to say about the tropes embedded in those stories, as well as interesting things to say about being a writer and being a reader!
there are official print translations in English, so I recommend checking out your local library/bookstores, but if that doesn't work for you, it's also available on the Internet Archive and Anna's Archive! it's fairly short, only four books (three for the main plot + fourth book of plot-relevant extras)
enjoy!!
#asks#frostfire425#sorry for the long response i just get very excited when i get to pitch this series!!!#it is DERANGED and i love it so much#I would categorize it as like. 80% comedy 20% every other genre#like mostly very very funny because sqq is a hysterical pov character whose inner monologue is a complete mess#and then the other 20% is a mix of romance and tragedy and horror#I call it a loving satire because while it is criticizing a lot of common tropes (mostly those found in male power fantasy novels)#it also very clearly is coming from someone who loves webnovels and reads a lot of them and understands them well enough to critique them#my beloved ridiculous dick joke novel that has genuinely interesting things to say about gender and power and consent and agency and trauma#slkdjfdlksjf anyway. i need to stop before i go off on a tangent#I suppose I should give a quick warning before you start it: this is technically a teacher/student romance#HOWEVER!! trust me. that is not an issue here.#I usually do not like teacher/student stuff and so I was very hesitant to start this series#so trust me when I say that most of the issues with teacher/student romances are not present here#the teacher is completely oblivious to his student's feelings until said student is like 25 and hasn't been his student for like 7 years#the age gap is also irrelevant because. well. you'll see sdlkjflksdjf#by the end of the novel they're only like a year apart. it's stupid <3#but yeah i went into it cautiously because i'd heard it was Problematic™#but turns out most of the problematic things i'd heard about weren't even ultimately relevant#and the main couple were actually even weirder about each other in ways i could never have predicted sdlkjfdlksjf#they are FREAK4FREAK and i love this for them#okay i need to stop talking about this stupid novel#GO READ IT!! IT'S FUN

"if using the final girl trope is plagiarism then everybody whos made a horror film since the texas chainsaw massacre owes the tobe hooper estate some money" everybody point and laugh at james somerton not knowing black christmas's jess bradford predates tcm's sally hardesty by a year 🤭 and that the actual tropes of sexuality surrounding the concept wouldnt be codified until halloween's laurie strode 🤭🤭 either way making sally not the first example of a final girl so this joke makes no sense 🤭
#og post#sorry for being autistic about horror movies.#i just think if youre going to make a satire or deconstruction of the genre you should know basic shit like this lol

Now this is the weird cartoon I'd watch.
There would be some very questionable humor, screaming (and i kinda really miss Hunter's screeches from the second season. He was GREAT while raising his voice, no matter what anybody can say about it being annoying), grotesque episode scenarios, cool uniforms and much else!
#invader zim#the owl house#emperor's coven#emperor belos#hunter the owl house#golden guard#the main thing in this is the change of genre regarding the visualization of the Golden Guard's castle life:#from heavy angst towards (sometimes inappropriately) dark comedy#i wonder if i sould make a tag for this idea given that i maybe will make a couple of other sketches abt it... okay how's this#emperor's coven cartoon#although i am very sad about the fact that i am no match for jonan vasquez's levels of grotesque.#i guess i don't have the guts to torture characters and make gross perspective angles in Really Vasquezy Manner#i am too soft .#or maybe it's a good thing given that this fandom probably won't react pretty at making absurd satire from trauma material

appreciation post for kevin, this random queen from the obscure low-budget 2017 chinese bl movie "mr ceo is falling in love with him". kevin is not involved with the yaoi - in fact his being a queen is not at all relevant to the bl content of the film - but he has a major role and is in no way a negative caricature or the butt of the joke. this movie loves kevin and put him there entirely to be a career woman and serve cunt. i am obsessed with him
#bl movie#chinese bl#mr ceo is falling in love with him#he's even on the MOVIE POSTER#serving some LETHAL EYESHADOW#no-one is ever doing it like him.#this is also some half-hearted bait to try and get people to watch mr ceo. i doubt it will work but look at kevin at least#is the movie good? i would not exactly say so. but it is very much not the genre of bad suggested by the title#it's a satirical commentary on the bl genre and censorship and workplace politics and the entertainment industry. to us (bf and i)#also the mr ceo iceberg... ONLY 1 ACTOR SEEMS TO HAVE ANY OTHER CREDITS. DIRECTOR AND WRITER HAVE NO OTHER WORKS.#MC WAS PLAYED BY A LITERAL ASSISTANT AT THE COMPANY.#as for kevin's actor he is untraceable. no other footage or images of this man no entry as an actor anywhere#we assume the director just picked him up from a gay bar#we believe mr ceo also narrowly escaped becoming lost media because the platform it was exclusively released on died#it lives on only in a very eccentrically english subbed version and a spanish translation thereof#thank u dailymotion dot com for saving kevin from the ravages of time#anyway director duan ge if you're out there bestie pls make another film the culture needs you 🙏

read the sisters of dorley (alyson greaves, 2021-ongoing), a story containing such highlights as:
a satire of the trans healthcare experience in the uk
a meta-commentary on how trans women engage with/reclaim an erotica genre that both helped and hurt us growing up
the full spectrum of the transfem experience (cute & happy vs. absolute horror) juxtaposed together at all times
a bunch of neurotic trans girls in denial about being a cult
the worst opsec you've ever seen saved only by the secret it's protecting being too ludicrous to think of
more codependent transbian relationships than you can shake a stick at
the weirdest sexy chaser lady you've ever met
and a bunch of novelty mugs with really terrible puns
it's an ongoing doorstopper with every content warning under the sun and it makes me feel every human emotion at once

Okay I'm not normal about this now but I am going to stop reblogging men at arms stuff for like 5 seconds.
Long story short, I saw the play yesterday, it was really good, and I lost my marbles a lil. Saw some completely unrelated weird metafiction today, the marbles are now rolling away down the road on their way to seek their fortune.
Anyway, carrot ironfoundersson is legitimately one of the most interesting explorations of the fantasy hero archetype I have ever seen and I love him.
#my post#im being so reasonable about this i promise this is a normal range of emotions about fiction i am having#i love art i love performance i love parody and satire and metafiction and stuff that uses and bends genre in weird ways#discworld

i think the witcher books (and the stories to saga transition) are good and fine to be adapted into audiovisual media (e.g., tv/movie), but only if the audience (meaning, an audience previously unfamiliar with the IP) is actually there for what it’s about. and can be encouraged to keep an open mind for what it will be.
because it seems many people get into it from the premise of “mutated monster killer kills monsters” (even though, if you read the short stories closely, they’re not about that at all, that’s only the literal aspect of them, and some aren’t even about monsters at all??). and then become disappointed that geralt isn’t just slaying beasts left and right for five novels (or seasons?) straight
if you want to have an audience that’s there for what the series is, then… just… tell them what they’re sitting down for!
to potential readers and viewers of such an adaptation, it just needs to be better communicated right off the bat what the story is about. and no one can do that except the already existing fans who have read and like the story and know what parts they love the most.
stop selling it on the basis of ‘ooo dark fantasy where people swear sometimes’ and actually look at what it is about (also, beyond that it is fantasy) and you’ll have your answer.
#what i would call it:#the fact that the witcher is referential and tongue in cheek and even parodical and satirical sometimes is never fcking communicated!!??#it’s shouting every second ‘im part of a broader literary canon and genre tradition!’ and the marketing team for it is like 🙈🙊🙉#so much more to say about all the characters here but yeahhh idk im still in a complainy mood lol#the elbow-high diaries

Whenever you have a Supreme Leader line, always double check to see if it isn't one of Pat's specialities!
So, Pat!Supreme Leader wants to force (uh) the people of Fodlan to open their eyes to the truth contained in her manifesto (CoS BaD, Kingdom and Alliance nobles BaD), and those people, after having their eyes opened, will abandon the idea of wanting to resist against Adrestia invading their homes and conquering their lands.
FE16's Supreme Leader wants to use her manifesto to cause "disquiet" in the lands to be conquered : this disquiet will influence people to not rebel when Adrestia will knock at their doors.
#lolcalisation woes#lolcalisation issues#Pat's gotta Pat#Interesting how he wrote the 'we will enlighten them and tell them the truth!!!'#when Supreme Leader's aim isn't to reveal any sort of truth in FE16 but to cause disquiet#and to think the game gives us more material about injustice or foul practices of Adrestian nobles#than the so called injustices of the Faerghans/Leicesterians#I'm half wondering if the manifesto isn't full of obvious crap like the shit satire journals used to have here#just to dunk of royalty/people etc#après le collier de marie antoinette#la gourmette de Madeline Gautier#'vous savez que Rodrigue Achille Fraldarius duc vend des bébés aux Sreng pour en faire des sacs en cuir?'#le genre de propagande tellement grosse et tellement conne qui prend sur les débiles#enfin vu que Fraldarius et l'est du Royaume ne se sont pas rangés...#faut croire que le manifesto c'était de la merde

not to be a hater on main but i just stumbled on a tik tok claiming that tsh both takes itself too seriously and could use more absurd comedy and it nearly made me punch a wall
#my quest to find agreeable creators on booktok and booktube leaves me v frustrated sometimes#!!! i accept no criticism of this book#but even without stan goggles on how can say with your entire chest that tsh takes itself too seriously#when it literally makes fun of 'dark academia' types TO YOUR FACE#which is ironic for the book that spawned the entire genre#it's a comedy of manners at the very least#'this book that contains copious amounts of absurdly comedic situations and makes fun of pretentious twits obsessed with aesthetics#could use more absurd comedy and is not satirical enough'#recognising those basic building blocks of the text does NOT even mean to have to like it??#i hate to be bringing the Reading Comprehension debate again but good lord. and this person claims to have a phd in literature too 🤦♀️#i am so over this pretense at criticism that basically boils down to 'i didn't like this thing so i can't be seen to admit it executes#anything well. so instead i'm going to pretend basic obvious techniques in the text don't exist and peddle it as groundbreaking critique'#stuff like recognising basic genre. what happened to that.#i don't like The Hangover either but it would be very strange to call it anything other than a comedy#the secret history#donna tartt#again you don't even have to like the book!!!#I'M SORRY BUT IT MADE ME WANT TO RANT SO BAD#livresque#booktok and booktube are satan's garden

Downloaded TikTok and took a stroll through booktok only to realize today's teens do not get satire. Which, to be fair, I didn't really either until someone explained that the movie American Psycho and is making fun of the intelligent psychopath trope used in horror movies. So like lemme just say if you guys are reading the splatterpunk novel Playground by Aron Beauregard and are wondering what the fuck is wrong this author?
Nothing is wrong with them. The book is satire about pearlclutching helicopter parents -- think Moms For Liberty -- who are making things like swingsets disappear from playgrounds. Which is bad cause rather than your kid getting a scrapped knee it means they're gonna end up spending more time indoors cause there's NOTHING to do outside. This is especially bad for kids in low income neighborhoods who can't afford Wifi or video games.
Especially since these hate groups (Moms For Liberty) are also behind the book bans.
So that's the point of the book, and if you're wondering how you can possibly keep your kid safe on the playground without caving to thinly veiled white supremacist soccor moms maybe
Try PUTTING DOWN YOUR PHONE and GOING TO THE PARK WITH THEM so you can watch them and make sure they don't get hurt. And don't forget the first-aid kit.
Crazy idea, I know.

Have read the first 7 issues of Watchmen. Review so far: Do we think Nite Owl and Rorschach ever explored each other's bodies?
#actual review: while in many ways it is an excellent critique of the superhero genre there are some elements#particularly the depictions of women and poc#where i am left unsure whether it is satirizing or contributing to the issue#which means it's either failed satire or just regular bad#in those regards at least. like i said it's largely very good#watchmen
