the thing about trying to recommend fiction podcasts to someone who isn't familiar with them is that not only are so so many genres represented but also the level of production can fall anywhere from "basically an audiobook" to "major motion picture minus the pictures"

I didn't mean to go down this rabbit-hole but now I need to exhume Anne Rice and shake her until she tells me if Armand is based on Tadzio/Bjorn Andreson because I swear to god these are the same story. A teenaged boy being pursued and taken advantaged of by older men who do not care about his mental or physical well-being? Objectified and reduced to this ideal, androgynous beauty that infantilizes them and strips them of their burgeoning manhood? That youthful beauty being immortalized forever, against their will? The Venice and Paris of it all???? There is too much going on here for it to be a coincidence

What do you guys think each of the pjo characters preferred movie genres are?
I think Percy definitely loves animated movies and hates when people call them immature but he also likes action movies.
Grover would like those nature documentaries with the British man’s voice in the background
Annabeth would act like she’s all cool and only watches serious stuff but she secretly enjoys a good romcom every now and then.

Gael García Bernal in Desierto (2015, dir. Jonás Cuarón)

[other gael filmography gifsets]
#gael garcía bernal#desierto#ggb filmography gifs#desierto 2015#gael garcia bernal#this is ultimately a pretty standard thriller of the being-chased-by-an-inexorable-killer type#where the cast is picked off one by one until only the most conventionally physically attractive remain#this is good news for gael's character#on account of being played by gael#i think this one is elevated by the setting both in terms of beauty (it is stunning) and by making effective plot use of it#that apparently meant they were shooting two hours' drive away from the nearest towns with no cellphone reception etc.#which may be why we don't see more films set here#also elevated by the performances which are uniformly good#also elevated by the themes (jeffrey dean morgan's antagonist is targeting migrants crossing the border)#so we're back in the territory explored in documentaries like who is dayani cristal but this time as fictional thriller#this film came out as the trump wall discourse was hotting up and that was naturally something that got talked about in interviews#clever inclusion of antagonist's dog which effectively constrains what the characters could do to get out of the situation#so unlike in many films of this type there isn't a screamingly obvious course of action that they should have taken but unaccountably don't#still it remains a genre film sticking broadly to the conventions of that genre so the plot isn't going to astonish you#i've still avoided giffing the most spoilery moments though#tbh i suspect gael's character is still screwed at the end but then i think that's also the point (see: themes)

I'm fully in Inklings Challenge idea-gathering mode and I'd forgotten how great it is. I just get to go through my day gathering potential story sparks. Anything could become a story. I don't need to stress over choosing one or committing to one because I don't know which genre I'm writing yet. I can build a basic concept, and then if it turns out it captures my attention come October, I've got a well of ideas I can draw from and add onto it. I'm just finding Legos to put in my toybox. It's so fun.

i think the poughkeepsie tapes is one of the biggest missed opportunities in horror. the idea of creating a faux true crime documentary to document a serial killer’s actions, especially given the glut of true crime docs that streaming has produced, is so so so good and the film actually manages to nail the verisimilitude in some cases. but the rest is just so fucking half baked. the serial killer is the smartest, most brilliant criminal on earth who has no character other than being smart and evil. the crimes documented just feel like a list of shocking atrocities that someone came up with in a violence dick measuring contest. some of the content is cool and the masked kill sequence is great but if there was ever a great idea ruined by a single minded obsession with producing edgy shock set pieces…….

LOVE TO LOVE YOU, DONNA SUMMER (2023) dir. Roger Ross Williams and Brooklyn Sudano
Shaped by Summer’s own reflections, the memories of close family, friends and colleagues, and filled with the sounds of Summer’s songs, Love to Love You, Donna Summer is an in-depth look at the iconic artist as she creates music that takes her from the avant-garde music scene in Germany, to the glitter and bright lights of dance clubs in New York, to worldwide acclaim, her voice and artistry becoming the defining soundtrack of an era.
A deeply personal portrait of Summer on and off the stage, the film features a wealth of photographs and never-before-seen home video footage – often shot by Summer herself – and provides a rich window into the surprising range of her artistry, from songwriting to painting, while exploring the highs and lows of a life lived on the global stage.

Hey everyone, director Michael Moore has released his entire documentary film about America's diseased healthcare system, SiCKO, on Youtube for free. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Absolutely metal of him to release it now, in light of what Luigi Mangione did.
