How Florence Emerged as a Renaissance Power

The abundance of churches, palaces, bridges, and other historic structures in contemporary Florence (Firenze) reflects its preeminent position among Italian peninsula states during the Renaissance. Extending from the 14th to 17th century, the Renaissance was centered in city-states such as Venice, Genoa, Milan, Naples, and Rome. The Republic of Florence was a well established mercantile center that had the gold florin as its economic basis.

Florence has its roots as Florentia (The Flourishing Town), a Roman garrison that included public baths, an amphitheater, a temple to Mars, and a central forum. The town came under rule by outsiders in the 5th century, with the Ostrogoths. Byzantines ruled from the 6th century, and ultimately the Lombards took control. Countess Matilda of Tuscany established her lengthy rule in 1069, and the city on the river Arno emerged as a banking hub that amassed gold from Africa.

This dynamic led to Florence minting a gold coin in 1252 during the late Medieval period. Produced across three centuries, the florin featured a portrait of Saint John the Baptist on the front and a fleur-de-lis on the back. Its value was a single Florentine lira, or the considerable sum of 240 denarii. This made it too valuable for use in everyday commerce, and it was largely reserved for international trade. This ensured a viable standard when conducting trade around the world.

The florin’s impact was considerable, with England and France issuing gold coins within a decade and florin becoming the generic name for gold coinage. Florence’s major banks also established branches across much of Europe, which made Florence a trade and commerce hub. With imitation and counterfeiting serious issues, the Venetian Republic issued the gold ducat in 1284, and this became the primary gold trading standard from the 14th century on. By the 16th century, Florence’s banks were relegated to producing silver florins of lesser value.

Economic growth also caused population growth, with Florence achieving a population of around 100,000 by the mid 1300s. This made it one of Europe’s largest cities, leading to it experiencing growing pains, with a reported 17,000 inhabitants begging on the streets. Another 25,000 people engaged in wool production, which was Florence’s largest industry. The city-state developed a guild system of apprenticeship and passing on knowledge within each major industry. The 12 artist guilds set standards for production and trade, with guild members taking prominent places in political life. Guilds encompassed textiles and banking, as well as the law, sculpting, masonry, and construction.

Florentine growth was halted for decades by the plague, which spread to Europe from Asia in 1347 and did away with the feudal system. By the early 1400s, as the city-state charted a course of recovery, its population had been reduced to 60,000. Wealth was increasingly diverted toward public works projects spanning art and architecture, and inhabitants of the expanding city-state envisioned it as a "new Athens.”

Among pioneering figures of the early 1400s that took Florence out of the medieval era were Brunelleschi, an architect who traveled to Rome and meticulously notated the classical proportions of its ancient buildings. From these he reintroduced elements of classical design, such as the columned arcade, and he also engineered a massive cathedral dome. Donatello had studied classical Roman sculpture with Brunelleschi and created Italy’s first freestanding, large-scale sculptures since ancient times. Masaccio pioneered shadowing and the three-dimensional use of light, imbuing flat fresco surfaces with realism. Together, these figures engendered a rebirth of artistic creativity that ultimately enabled the great works of Florentines such as Michelangelo.

WEEK 8: LAST HURRAH

Hi everyone! If this is your first time coming across my blog, my name is Jules, and I’ve been studying abroad in Prague for 8 weeks now. I can’t believe I’m sitting here documenting my final week in this amazing city. This international experience has truly been one of the best decisions I have ever made and has gifted me with one unforgettable summer. Now let me jump into a quick recap of my week. (Side note: sorry this blog post is delayed; I will get into the treacherous reason why in my next blog.)

After coming home from Amsterdam, I immediately locked in to study for my Linear Algebra final. It ended up going super smoothly, and I am very satisfied with my overall grade and performance in this course. All the math classes in my program collectively took a field trip to Prague’s Technical Museum on Tuesday. It was interesting to see the impact of engineering on this country’s technology and industry through the development of automobiles, aircrafts, bicycles, and ships. I am so grateful to have taken this course in such a dynamic environment with equally amazing professors and classmates!

Before leaving our host country, my friends and I had to squeeze in our last family dinners. On Tuesday night, a huge group of us grabbed dinner at a traditional Czech restaurant that was actually recommended to us by Petra (our professor from Art & Architecture in the Golden City), which I thought was a very fitting last meal. One of the things that I loved most about this study abroad experience was the friendships I have built. Thinking about going back to school and seeing them around campus makes me so excited. The following night on Wednesday, my apartment had our last dinner together at a pizza restaurant right down the street. I’m going to miss living with them so much!! And after dinner, we of course had to end things off the Prague way by going out together one last time. Shoutout to my absolute favorite, Dog Bar, for giving me and my friends some of the most unforgettable nights here.

On Thursday night after a full day of packing up, my mom and my sister arrived!! I spent the next few days showing them around my beautiful host country and giving them a taste of my life here for the past 8 weeks. Now, we’re headed to Paris, London, and Genoa to end off my unbelievably long summer traveling and living from suitcase to suitcase!!

To reminisce a little, here are some top things I’m going to miss about Prague (the little details):

The sun rising at 4:30 AM and setting at 9:30 PM.

The dogs running around politely leashless next to their owners.

The $3 high quality cups of coffees. 

The public transportation speakers announcing the stop “I.P. Pavlova”.

The Thai red curry and pad thai at the restaurant below our apartment (shoutout to Madame Lyn Restaurant).

The zig zagged walk from my apartment to the CEA CAPA center. 

The feeling of coming back “home” after a weekend away in a different country.

I’m feeling so bittersweet leaving my summer home, but every good thing must always come to an end. Prague and this entire experience will always hold a special place in my heart. Plot summary:

The Five spend their Easter holidays on a cruise, offered to them by Mr Kirrin, who had to stay home for work. The children are accompanied by Sylvie Gerbay, a 25-year-old English teacher who’s a friend of the family. Among the passengers of the liner, which is called the San Silvio, the Five notice a tall, portly man with a surly demeanour, accompanied by a self-effacing boy of about 11. Introducing themselves as uncle and nephew, they always keep to themselves, speaking a foreign language, and the uncle seems to prevent his nephew from socialising with the other passengers.

On the second day of the cruise, the San Silvio makes a stop in Genoa and the Five visit the city along with Sylvie.

(Mr Assendi doesn’t want his nephew socialising with anyone)

The next stopover is Fiumicino. The travellers take a bus to Rome and visit the various landmarks. They meet the uncle and nephew while taking photos in the Forum and learn their names: the scowling man is Mr Assendi and his nephew is Smaïlo; the latter constantly looks fearful of his uncle.

In the evening, the Five find a way to talk to Smaïlo without his uncle’s knowledge, and learn more about this odd pair: Smaïlo was born of a French mother and a Turkish father and grew up in France. He lost his mother when he was just a baby, and his father passed away recently. Now his Turkish family are demanding that he return to his father’s country. Mr Assendi is Smaïlo's father’s half-brother. Smaïlo's father was very wealthy and left a fortune that Smaïlo will inherit when he comes of age. Smaïlo suspects that his uncle wants to harm him, or at the very least keep him captive, in order to get hold of this fortune.

The Five subsequently explain Smaïlo’s situation to Sylvie, but she doesn’t take them seriously, merely thinking Smaïlo is telling tall tales to draw attention to himself.

At their next stopover in Naples, as the Five are boarding the minibus that will take them into town, they are surprised to see Smaïlo alone without his uncle. Smaïlo says that his uncle sent him to pick up some mail at the post office. But Smaïlo doesn't speak Italian and feels intimidated at the idea of making this errand. Dick offers to do it instead.

At the post office, the clerk understandably refuses to give any mail to anyone who isn’t its intended recipient, something that Mr Assendi should obviously have known before sending Smaïlo on this errand. On his way out of the post office, Dick realises that he is being followed by two men and tries to lose them in the streets. Dick hears them mention Mr Assendi, and it appears that they were meant to kidnap Smaïlo.

The San Silvio sets sail again through the Strait of Messina and heads for Athens, where the passengers will stay for two days.

On a visit to the Acropolis, the Five overhear Mr Assendi talking covertly with another man, named Trakopoulos. Mr Assendi plans to have Smaïlo kidnapped and detained on an island whose name the children cannot hear.

The next day sees the passengers going on a sea trip to visit nearby islands Salamis, Aegina and Hydra. Unfortunately, the Five do not take the same boat as Smaïlo and they go to different islands. When they return from their trip in the evening, they find Mr Assendi boomingly lamenting the disappearance of his nephew, who was reportedly victim of an accident and drowned while swimming on the coast.

Sylvie is now convinced that the threat against Smaïlo and the kidnapping is real and agrees to monitor Mr Assendi's movements. Meanwhile, the Five hire a boat and go to investigate the island where Smaïlo has disappeared.

They don’t find any lead, but head for the nearest uninhabited islet where they discover a cave equipped with a padlocked gate in which Smaïlo is detained.

They send the fisherman who brought them to the islet to deliver a message to the police and to Sylvie in Athens. While waiting for help to arrive, they struggle with the rusty gate and manage to get it open. Stuck on the islet, they see Smaïlo’s kidnapper, Trakopoulos, approaching in a boat.

They manage to hide and swim to the nearest island, 200 metres away, where Smaïlo was initially kidnapped.

Trakopoulos chases them through the ruins of Apollo's temple. They manage to evade him, steal his boat and escape just as the police arrive with Sylvie.

Under Timmy’s threat, Trakopoulos makes a confession that incriminates Mr Assendi. Smaïlo will go to live with his guardian in France, with whom he gets on well.

The History of Dentzel Carousels and the Burlington Carousel Festival 2023

To say I have a sense of place may be an understatement…I’ve lived in the same town on the same street for almost my whole life! I’m very grateful that I’ve been able to travel and see so much of the world, but as I get older, I appreciate the small town I grew up in more and more.

One of the fondest memories of my childhood was going to City Park in the summer to ride the rides and the carousel was always my favorite ride! At the time, I had no idea just how special this carousel was!

What I know now is that Burlington’s historic, hand carved Dentzel Carousel is a work of art that we are so fortunate to have!

The Dentzel Carousel factory was founded in 1867 in Germantown, Pennsylvania by Gustav Dentzel and it became a synonym for excellence in the pioneering and development of the hand carved carousel. Some Dentzel carousels are still in working order today, including the carousel in our City Park.

The city of Burlington purchased the Dentzel carousel in 1948 from an amusement park in Genoa, Ohio. It was built by the famed Dentzel Carousel Company around 1910 near Philadelphia and there are only 25 Dentzel Carousels still in operation in the United States. Other locations include Disneyland, the San Francisco Zoo, Six Flags over Texas, and Raleigh’s Pullen Park.

In 1948, Burlington’s City manager, W.H. Carper, had a vision that the carousel would bring great joy for citizens in Burlington and he was correct. In 1948, the carousel cranked up for the first time and there were reportedly 12000 attendees. At that time, a ride was 5 cents.

For a city the size of Burlington, the Carousel was considered quite a treat and residents from surrounding communities came to ride the carousel. It soon became a regional draw and still is today.

The Burlington Dentzel Carousel is a menagerie carousel featuring hand carved wooden animals including horses, rabbits, cats, ostriches, a stag, a lion, a tiger, and a giraffe. Some of the animals are “jumpers” which go up and down and some are “standers” which are stationary.

In the mid 1980’s, the carousel had fallen into disrepair and local resident Diane Vaught helped spearhead a grassroots community led effort to restore the carousel. At that time, the animals were painted in bright primary colors and the rounding boards (pictured above middle left) had been painted over with cartoon characters like Micky Mouse. Originally the rounding boards were paintings from different historical eras depicting wildlife scenes and landscapes.

Ms. Vaught and her team of volunteers restored the carousel to its original appearance. For the animals, they stripped the paint, worked with resins to strengthen the wood, and repainted with historically appropriate colors.

For the rounding boards, they delicately scraped off layers of paint to reveal the original scenes underneath. From there, artists recreated the colors from those original scenes. Ms. Vaught worked with local textile machinery manufacturer Lessona to cast new metal gears to replace the old, deteriorated originals.

In 2018, the Dentzel carousel was again in need of refurbishment and the Burlington City Council voted to enlist Carousel and Carvings, a specialty restoration and manufacturing company from Marion, Ohio, for the job.

The new carousel house is a state-of the-art rotunda within the Burlington City Park. Its huge glass doors can be opened and closed, allowing for year-round use. The Carousel House also includes an event space with a view of the Carousel that can be rented by the public. The original Carousel house has been repurposed as a covered pavilion.

I’m a firm believer in historic preservation. The company that designed and built our carousel had a vision that was carried out by artisans that specialized in their craft, which has become rare today. Honoring the art of the past and preserving it for future generations is important.

The meticulous carving of the carousel animals is breathtaking and something that cannot be replicated today! I am so happy that our city chose to restore this beautiful part of our history as the centerpiece of City Park. It is an honor for me to be able to take my grandsons to experience our Dentzel Carousel!

The Carousel’s Wurlitzer Band Organ was restored as well and stands proudly alongside as the ride goes around!

Burlington City Park features other rides to be enjoyed by children and adults including a train that goes around the perimeter of the park, a boat ride (see below), cars on a track and an airplane ride. One of my favorites as a child was the boats and it gives me so much pleasure to see my grandsons riding these wooden boats!

The rounding boards that line the upper circumference of the Carousel (pictured above, middle left) are paintings from different historical eras, mostly depicting wildlife scenes and landscapes.

As you can see from the pictures above, the detail of the carousel animals is beautifully intricate and will be appreciated for years to come!

The City of Burlington is proud to announce that on May 6 and 7, 2023, the City will host the first Carousel Festival since 2019 celebrating the return of a Burlington icon.

The event features live music & performances, an artisan market, food vendors and a fun-packed Kids Zone as well as the parks amusement rides!

The primary location for producing silk fabrics that are sent to some of the best fashion companies in the world is Como. Due to the abundance of mulberry trees, which are essential for raising silkworms, and the widespread availability of water, which is crucial during many stages of silk production, it is referred to as the "silk city" in popular culture. While other procedures like weaving, dyeing, printing, and design are carried out in Italy, raw silk is also imported from China.

 Lucca silk

The city of Lucca in Italy was obviously well-established and a significant hub for the silk trade. Strong eastern influences can be seen in the designs of Lucchese silk fabrics, which feature roundels, birds, and single Persian animals. Their fabrics, especially those from the 12th century, have modest repeating designs in narrow decorative bands woven with silk and gold on a plain or geometric backdrop. Even now, these designs are fashionable, and they are used to adorn clothing. Lucca textiles are renowned for their variety and high quality. A weave of Iranian origin that resembles a damask and has a woven pattern that is lifted in relief from the backdrop is another prominent design. Gold is woven into the wings or heads of the majority of animals and birds that are woven.

 Special fabrics known as dropping auroserici, constructed from a combination of silk and gold or silver threads, are produced from silk in Lucca. They combined Islam and Chinese patterns in the fabric designs. Styles developed in a more complex and lively way. These fabrics' primary Italian design elements include vine leaves, flowers, and naturalist motifs like eagles, lions, wolves, foxes, and other animals. There are also Romanesque scenes, hunting scenes, vine shoots, and palmettes. Economic growth in Lucca is the result of the rising demand for luxury textiles in Western Europe. The economics of Lucca's silk business has a significant impact on Europe, mirroring the organization of the London and Lyon textile industries.

 China vs. Italy

When fashion was starting to become a big deal, in the 1980s and 1990s, the Italian silk dress business prospered greatly. The nation benefited from the increase in the mass consumption of fashion. In contrast, it is now more difficult to serve the luxury goods market because pricing is now a point of competition. But, in terms of innovation, quality, and design, Italy outperforms China.

After their previous adventure on a cruise boat that brought them to Spain and Northern Africa, the Five go on a second Mediterranean cruise that will lead them to Italy and Greece!

The Five spend their Easter holidays on a cruise, offered to them by Mr Kirrin, who had to stay home for work. The children are accompanied by Sylvie Gerbay, a 25-year-old English teacher who’s a friend of the family.

(The Five's adult companion, Sylvie)

Among the passengers of the liner, which is called the San Silvio, the Five notice a tall, portly man with a surly demeanour, accompanied by a self-effacing boy of about 11. Introducing themselves as uncle and nephew, they always keep to themselves, speaking a foreign language, and the uncle seems to prevent his nephew from socialising with the other passengers.

On the second day of the cruise, the San Silvio makes a stop in Genoa and the Five visit the city along with Sylvie.

[TRANSLATION: Narrator: Then they had a pleasant stroll through picturesque alleyways and flower-filled parks. At a street corner, a portly man had just appeared followed by a dark-haired boy.]

The next stopover is Fiumicino. The travellers take a bus to Rome and visit the various landmarks. They meet the uncle and nephew while taking photos in the Forum and learn their names: the scowling man is Mr Assendi and his nephew is Smaïlo; the latter constantly looks fearful of his uncle.

(Visiting Rome)

[TRANSLATION: Narrator: George and her cousins were enjoying their day without a care. The tour of the city was now coming to an end... The Five and Sylvie had seen all they could... The Pincian Hill, Castel Sant'Angelo...]

[TRANSLATION: Anne: The dark-haired boy! George: So you came ashore? Dick: And all on your own?]

In the evening, the Five find a way to talk to Smaïlo without his uncle’s knowledge, and learn more about this odd pair: Smaïlo was born of a French mother and a Turkish father and grew up in France. He lost his mother when he was just a baby, and his father passed away recently. Now his Turkish family are demanding that he return to his father’s country. Mr Assendi is Smaïlo's father’s half-brother. Smaïlo's father was very wealthy and left a fortune that Smaïlo will inherit when he comes of age. Smaïlo suspects that his uncle wants to harm him, or at the very least keep him captive, in order to get hold of this fortune.

The Five subsequently explain Smaïlo’s situation to Sylvie, but she doesn’t take them seriously, merely thinking Smaïlo is telling tall tales to draw attention to himself.

At their next stopover in Naples, as the Five are boarding the minibus that will take them into town, they are surprised to see Smaïlo alone without his uncle. Smaïlo says that his uncle sent him to pick up some mail at the post office. But Smaïlo doesn't speak Italian and feels intimidated at the idea of making this errand. Dick offers to do it instead. At the post office, the clerk understandably refuses to give any mail to anyone who isn’t its intended recipient, something that Mr Assendi should obviously have known before sending Smaïlo on this errand. On his way out of the post office, Dick realises that he is being followed by two men and tries to lose them in the streets. Dick hears them mention Mr Assendi, and it appears that they were meant to kidnap Smaïlo.

[TRANSLATION: Narrator: The fugitive spotted a half-open carriage entrance. He rushed through the opening and pushed back the door. Peering through a wide letterbox slot, he saw his pursuers approaching.]

The San Silvio sets sail again through the Strait of Messina and heads for Athens, where the passengers will stay for two days.

On a visit to the Acropolis, the Five overhear Mr Assendi talking covertly with another man, named Trakopoulos. Mr Assendi plans to have Smaïlo kidnapped and detained on an island whose name the children cannot hear.

The next day sees the passengers going on a sea trip to visit nearby islands Salamis, Aegina and Hydra. Unfortunately, the Five do not take the same boat as Smaïlo and they go to different islands. When they return from their trip in the evening, they find Mr Assendi boomingly lamenting the disappearance of his nephew, who was reportedly victim of an accident and drowned while swimming on the coast.

[TRANSLATION: Dick: And where are his clothes if he went swimming? And why would he remove his shoes on if he'd just slipped? George: His uncle's putting on an act! Last night, Sylvie, we discovered a whole plot against Smaïlo... Narrator: When the young woman heard the children's story, she turned even paler.]

Sylvie is now convinced that the threat against Smaïlo and the kidnapping is real and agrees to monitor Mr Assendi's movements. Meanwhile, the Five hire a boat and go to investigate the island where Smaïlo has disappeared.

[TRANSLATION: Narrator: Early the next morning, as agreed, Sylvie accompanied the Five to the harbour. George quickly decided on a sturdy motorboat.]

They don’t find any lead, but head for the nearest uninhabited islet where they discover a cave equipped with a padlocked gate in which Smaïlo is detained. They send the fisherman who brought them to the islet to deliver a message to the police and to Sylvie in Athens. While waiting for help to arrive, they struggle with the rusty gate and manage to get it open. Stuck on the islet, they see Smaïlo’s kidnapper, Trakopoulos, approaching in a boat.

[TRANSLATION: Narrator: The children emerged into the sunlight, dusty but free! Dick: Free, but perhaps not for long! If Trakopoulos catches us... George: Well, never mind! After all, there are seven of us against him. Anne: Seven of us? George: You bet! Timothy counts as two!]

They manage to hide and swim to the nearest island, 200 metres away, where Smaïlo was initially kidnapped. Trakopoulos chases them through the ruins of Apollo's temple.

They manage to evade him, steal his boat and escape just as the police arrive with Sylvie. Under Timmy’s threat, Trakopoulos makes a confession that incriminates Mr Assendi. Smaïlo will go to live with his guardian in France, with whom he gets on well.
