I find Rolan difficult to write and I need tips for my uhm...self-indulgent fanfic

Oooh!! Fun, I love a self-indulgent fanfic. You’ll have to be sure to post it in the rolan tag!

I’d say the best advice I could give is to just think about what Rolan’s character and personality actually is. The reason I find him so fun to write is because, unlike the companions, he has just enough character to be a well written character, but isn’t central enough to make it so you can’t write him in your own interpretation. Every Rolan fic I’ve ever read has a very different version of Rolan, including the two I’ve written—not everyone will agree, but such is the nature of fandom.

As for forming an idea of what he’s like, you can also look into other fics and especially headcanon posts to really inform your idea of him and also build out his character more. When writing characters in general, you want to have a good idea of small details—things that make a character feel like a person and not just a trope. For example, it would be easy to say “he’s grumpy and cocky” and interpret that as who he is. But then, looking more into his character, you can decide that that’s all for show and to hide insecurities, and focus on this trait to develop his character.

As for a more practical tip, look into how he actually speaks in the game (there’s a YouTube video with all his voice lines that I’ve watched to death) and what words he likes to use—e.g. ‘zurgan’ ‘wretched’ ‘damnation’—and also look into when he used those words. For example, when he’s drunk and grieving, he tells you to “sod off”, which is a very colloquial thing to say, especially from someone who seems like he thinks he’s intellectually above others. From that verbiage alone. you could draw hundreds of conclusions about his character.

Also, consult with the several hundreds of Rolan professionals across tumblr. 😂 We all have different ideas of who he is and how he talks. Tonnes of us still write about him, @lemonsrosesandlavender @redroomroaving @reverieblondie @sorceresssundries to name but a few.

12) Shane never had the chance to be in a queer relationship throughout most of his teens, but he did have a fascination with other men in training at the Wind Academy. He always just thought it was just jealousy though; before his self-esteem picked up...later.

The Thunder Academy was a lot less uptight that the Wind Academy, so Blake figured out he was into just about everyone really fast. Calling his short, sexual meet-ups could hardly be called 'relationships' though.

39) Shane fantasized about Tori and Dustin each one time while trying to get rid of morning wood--and both of them worked like a shot. And he absolutely felt weird about it for the rest of the day; enough to go out and find some dirty magazines to buy and use for a good long while afterwards. When Blake and Hunter was working with Lothor, he fell into the habit of checking out the Generals as well as Marah and Kapri. And while he didn't feel much shame about imagining Zurgane or Vexacus, he felt instantly bad about fantasizing about the girls. Not because he was especially guilty, but more like because he was 90% sure Kapri was a lesbian that would NEVER let his fantasies slide, and Marah was...just...no.

41) Shane is a no-go on BDSM. He doesn't kink shame, but he is really, really, really not into it. Blake is in a bit of a weird position when it comes to BDSM. While he would love to use a paddle, or a whip, or wear a lot of leather and even maybe some heels, he would never really want to reciprocate as either a real dom or a real sub. So he's into the aesthetics, but is too lazy to engage in any real way with it.

44) The dominant lifestyle is something that Shane has to sort of pretend at while out on the field as a Ranger, but really he's a huge softie in his personal life as well as the bedroom. He's more than happy to bottom or not having anything to do with penetrative sex at all. Blake is a bossy little shit in the bedroom. He prefers to be penetrated, but he's always on top.

I like Lothor as a lead villain, but I have to wonder how much Zurgane would have appreciated being in the service of a more serious villain. The poor guy spends most of the series desperately trying to focus on the business of fighting the Rangers while dealing with every other member of the Team Evil Space Ninja is more prone to goofing off or fighting amongst themselves.

I almost feel sorry for him by the end of General Decpetion. He just wanted to do his job to the best of his abilities, and for his efforts, he gets blown up by Vexacus.
