US navy secretary says Australian multination military exercise demonstrates unity to China
By Associated Press 7:41am Jul 22, 2023
The major multination military training exercise launched in Australia sends a message to China that American's allies are cooperating to defend their security and democratic values, US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said.
Talisman Sabre began in 2005 as a bjennial joint exercise between the United States and Australia but has expanded this year to 13 nations and more than 30,000 military personnel.
Del Toro and deputy prime minister Richard Marles welcomed ever-closer closer bilateral military ties as they launched the exercise at a Sydney naval base.

Del Toro said land, sea and air military platforms are becoming increasingly complicated and allies need to exercise together to be able to operate as a single task force.
"The most important message that China can take from this exercise and anything that our allies and partners do together is that we are extremely tied by the core values that exist among our many nations together," Del Toro told reporters.
"We are prepared to actually operate together in defence of our national security interests and in defence of the core values that we all share," he added.
Marles said more than 800 military vehicles will cross a single-mobile wharf to be deployed at the Queensland state coastal town of Bowen during the two-week exercise.
"It's going to be the most significant logistics exercise that we will see between Australia and the United States in Australia since the Second World War," Marles said.
"All of this is actually building muscle memory between our two countries defense forces, is building comfort and familiarity and obviously not just between Australia and the United States but the other 11 countries that will be participating," Marles added.
Del Toro and Marles were upbeat about progress on the so-called AUKUS deal under which the United States and Britain will provide Australia with a fleet of submarines powered by US nuclear technology.

The closer military relationship will be underscored on Saturday when USS Canberra is commissioned in Sydney.
The Independence-variant littoral combat ship, built by Australian manufacturer Austal, will become the first US warship to be commissioned in a foreign-port.
The original USS Canberra was a cruiser launched in 1943 named after the Australian cruiser HMAS Canberra that was torpedoed by the Japanese in 1942 with a loss of 193 lives while supporting US Marines landings on the Solomon Islands.
The Australian warship was named for the Australian capital.
The Solomons are again a security concern for the United States and its allies over recent security agreements the South Pacific nation has signed with Beijing.
Chinese spy ships have been shadowing Talisman Sabre exercises since 2017.
Australian Army Lieutenant General Greg Bilton said a Chinese spy ship had been contacted in the Coral Sea off Australia's northeast coast on Thursday and was expected to move into the exercise area.
"They've done this for a number of years. We're well prepared for it," Bilton said.
Fiji, France, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Britain, Canada and Germany are taking part in this year's exercise that ends on August 4.
The Philippines, Singapore and Thailand are attending the exercise as observers.

Australia sends Poseidon MPA to Italy for NATO operation
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/04/2022 - 16:00
A P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft of the Royal Australian Air Force is being sent to the Mediterranean as part of NATO operation Sea Guardian 22.
The operation is a NATO maritime security operation, not provided for in Article 5, which aims to maintain awareness of the maritime situation, deter terrorism and increase training in the Mediterranean region.
According to the Australian Ministry of Defense, the P-8A will be based in Italy and will operate in the Western and Central Mediterranean until mid-October 2022.
“Australia is a NATO Enhanced Opportunities Partner and an important Asia-Pacific member for the alliance,” said Lieutenant-General Greg Bilton, Australia’s head of joint operations. “Our partner status recognizes Australia’s significant contributions to NATO operations and the value that the Australian Defense Force (ADF) has shown over several decades.”

Bilton said that Australia's participation in the operation reflects the country's ongoing partnership in the exercise of Australia's memorandum of understanding with NATO.
“Our participation in the Sea Guardian operation is an opportunity to extend Australia’s interoperability with the alliance to the maritime air surveillance domain,” Bilton added. "This represents a natural advance in our ongoing partnership, focused on responding to today's global security challenges. Whenever possible, the ADF supports European security initiatives to defend the rules-based international order.
The Royal Australian Air Force operates a total of 12 Poseidons, with two more ordered under contract from December 2020. The aircraft incorporates surveillance and maritime attack capabilities.
The P-8As can have internal and external stations for AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER, AGM-84 Harpoon and the Mark 54 torpedo with a High Altitude Anti-Submarine Warfare Weapon Capability (HAAWC) system. Australia plans to integrate the Long-Range Anti-ship Missile (LRASM) into Poseidon, allowing it to reach opposing surface vessels at significantly greater ranges.

Visions of Crescent Moons and Ermine Tails
This is one of a number of wallpaper designs by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin in the museum collection. Pugin began designing wallpapers in the early 1840s, and was probably the most prolific wallpaper designer of the nineteenth century, designing more patterns than even William Morris. He created a number of private commissions for large country houses, as well as papers for more general use, but the majority of his designs were created for the Houses of Parliament, for which he created over one hundred different patterns. Pugin was one of the early proponents of the British Reform movement and he sought inspiration from authentic Gothic sources and rendered all his designs without perspective, as seen in this design. This is one of his private commissions created for Captain Washington Hibbert and his wife Julia at Bilton Grange, Warwickshire. Pugin was an architect by trade and he had been given the commission to design Bilton Grange in 1841, so he was already familiar with the Hibberts when he designed this paper. All of the papers he designed for private commissions were very personalized. For this design, Pugin included the couple’s monograms, along with crescents and ermine tails which are found on the Hibbert family crest. It’s really a punchy design with its bright colors and strong graphics. Incidentally, Bilton Grange is still standing today and houses a prep school. It would be interesting to know if this paper is still intact.

The ADF’s chief of joint operations, Lieutenant General Greg Bilton, said 128 people had been escorted out of the town, with the armoured vehicles needed to protect them against falling trees.

“We believe that those armoured vehicles could sustain a tree fall and [we] know that our people inside them are safe,” he said.
“So we continue to prove routes using those means but the…
