Luz's Hair in TOH (Rant)

I feel like the topic of luz's hair in the owl house can be considered somewhat of a taboo in the Fandom, and while I agree there were many missed opportunities, I think the way they handled wasn't necessarily bad.

One topic I see many people criticize is the length of her hair, as they will argue it 'masculineizes her'. However, I thought her hair length thought was actually a neat touch. Seeing how luz is generally ostracized, and how she either doesn't understand or deliberately refrains from confroming to societal standards in general; it makes sense to me to that she would not confrom to the regular femmine bueaty standards. (Not to say the short hair can't be femmine) This lack of confoming to beauty standards is also shown in her clothing (the way none of it particularly fashionable or or 'accepted' so to speak.) In my opinion, her lack of conformation to femmine standards if living is also shown in her general demeanor and attitude. Not only could this be another example of her societal non-conformity but also an example of her gender non-conformity. This aspect of her is really relevant to her as a character. It's an extension of her queer identity and furthers the relevance of her being a considered 'weirdo'. (Self hatred potentially steming from internalized homophobia)

As for the texture of her hair, I have quite a few qualms with the way it was handled towards the end of the show. At first, I really liked the way they had her straightening it. I feel like this is relevant to the ostracization her and her mother would face as people of color in a small colonial town that still worships witch hunters. (Which even in the modern context are just woman killers) It's also relevant that she and her (single) mother are a family that moved, rather than one that had a history in the town. (Its also noteworthy that they possibly moved from another country, which would make them immigrants). This accompanied by the general bullying luz most likely faced in school due to her nuerodivergence (and possibly the fact that she is queer and a poc)its would make sense that her and Camila would straighten their hair to avoid passive acts of discrimination from others or even from institutions. (For Camila, her hair would be 'unprofessional', and for luz, it would be 'messy and unkempt'. " So to me it's a big character development for both of them when they stop straightening their hair and show they are embracing the parts of them that society won't. The only thing I wish they had done differently was to make luzs hair texture coily rather than wavy/curly in s3, seeing as that would help to visually represent the fact that luz is afro-latina I also wish they had done more with the scene where they show luz being depressed, they could've done something with the way she takes care of her hair, or shown her wearing a bonnet to sleep the way Camilla did.

Overall, I don't entirely agree with everything they did while handling luzs hair, but I think the way some people talk about it is entirely incorrect; especially since her hair is a very important part of her character, that needs to and deserves to be treated with nuance.

Όπως έχουμε ήδη αναφέρει στα βασικά μας σχόλια στη διαβούλευση, το σχέδιο νόμου ως έχει, αγνοεί και παραβιάζει κατάφωρα τα δικαιώματα των τρανς ατόμων, μέσα από μια σειρά ελλειμμάτων και αναπάντητων κενών. Ενδεικτικά αναφέρουμε τη μη σαφή συμπερίληψη τρανς ατόμων στις διαδικασίες της υποβοηθούμενης αναπαραγωγής και της παρένθετης κύησης, την μη διόρθωση των στοιχείων του τρανς γονέα στη ληξιαρχική πράξη του τέκνου, την μη αλλαγή του “τεκμηρίου μητρότητας” σε περίπτωση κυοφορίας και τοκετού ενός τρανς άνδρα, κ.α.

Τα ελλείμματα αυτά συντηρούν υπάρχοντες, και δημιουργούν νέους, αποκλεισμούς και διακρίσεις με βάση την ταυτότητα φύλου των ατόμων, ενισχύοντας επίσης αντιεπιστημονικά επιχειρήματα γύρω από την γονεϊκότητα. Υπενθυμίζουμε ότι οι διακρίσεις και η αποκλεισμοί είναι ο νούμερο ένα παράγοντας επικινδυνότητας για την ψυχική υγεία και την ευζωία των ΛΟΑΤΚΙ+ και ειδικότερα τρανς ατόμων, και ο τρόπος που αυτά κανονικοποιούνται μέσω της νομοθεσίας είναι ένας παραπάνω παράγοντας επιβάρυνσης για όλα τα τρανς άτομα.

Για να μπορούμε να μιλάμε για πραγματική ισότητα στο γάμο και τη γονεϊκότητα, σε όλες της τις μορφές, είναι απαραίτητο το νομοσχέδιο να λαμβάνει υπόψιν του τα δικαιώματα των τρανς ατόμων και των παιδιών τους αναγνωρίζοντας και προστατεύοντας τη νομική σχέση των τρανς γονέων με τα παιδιά τους, αλλά και την πρόσβαση σε διαδικασίες υποβοηθούμενης αναπαραγωγής/παρένθετης κύησης χωρίς αποκλεισμούς λόγω ταυτότητας φύλου.

Ως Orlando LGBT+ έχουμε καταθέσει αναλυτικά προτάσεις αλλαγής και βελτίωσης του νομοσχεδίου και αναφορικά με τη διασφάλιση των δικαιωμάτων των τρανς ατόμων, και ταυτόχρονα στηρίζουμε και όλες τις προτάσεις που κατατέθηκαν εκ μέρους του Σωματείου Υποστήριξης Διεμφυλικών.

I know there is are a lot of reasons to be afraid of what's happening in the world right now around trans issues. But i want to reassure people out there that things are okay. Today, i'm about to get dressed to go to work, out, as a gender non-confroming trans woman. I will face no danger. In fact, i will find comradery among most of my coworkers.

And i want to share that because, although trans people in the world still face abuse, neglect, and systemic oppression, the freedom for trans folk to live their normal life as they are has never been closer to a livable reality.

There is always going to be work still to do, so we should celebrate the victories when they occur.

Ace/asexual= a person who does not experience sexual attraction

Aro/aromantic= a person who does not experience romantic attraction

Intersex= a birth defect where someone can have both male and female genitalia/chromosomes

Q*eer= while some people HAVE reclaimed this word, it still is a slur and is not in the acronym

Questioning= everyone questions themself sometimes, however, just because someone is questioning themself, doesn't make it LGBT.

Furries= it may come as a shock, but some people think they are. Furries are people who dress up in furred outfits of Ampamorohic animals

Map/nomap= a pedophile. It's easy to see that these people are dangerous and don't deserve a life. Therefore/should be put in jail.

Ddlg= again, not lgbt. Ddlg means daddy Dom/little girl. This has grooming aspects and pedophilia aspects as well.. It is a kink and kinks are NOT lgbt

Leather= again a kink, but is a part of bdsm

Here are some terms that are also not lgbt

Heterosexual= a person sexually attracted to the opposite gender

Heteromantic= a person romantically attracted to the opposite gender

Cis gender= a person who identifies as their AGAB
