my headcanons about dazai's childhood leading up to being found by mori at fourteen (contains mentions of self-harm and suicide. read at your own discrestion) :
**note that i have not read no longer human and so will be deriving most of these hcs from irl dazai's life and my own personal interpretation of him. this is purely self-indulgent with very little canon examples to back any of it up. but this is how i portray my dazai and some things in here will be mentioned going forward.
born as tsushima shuuji on june 19 to tsushima gen'emon and tsushima tane. he is an only child.
the tsushima family was actually quite wealthy and held a lot of power. yes, dazai was a rich kid. gen'emon is also a diet member and so it was a very strict and feudal household.
dazai got next to no parental love as a child for two reasons: 1.) his mother had a chronic illness since dazai was three and was bedridden for the rest of her life. he was basically told not to disturb his mother at all. 2.) gen'emon worked long hours as a politician and when he did come home he was either too tired to take care of dazai or would focus on taking care of his wife instead. this is the first step towards dazai's alienation from humanity.
this also means that he was basically taken care of by the family servants. taken care of, not raised, for they did not know how to handle a child like dazai.
dazai has undiagnosed schizoid personality disorder. this means he has a very limited range of emotional expression and has trouble forming personal connections. so even when the servants did try to reach out to him, dazai did not know how to reciprocate. it was easier to just clothe and feed him instead of trying to actually interact with him. by age five he already had a reputation for being and odd / strange child.
his high intellect and observation skills manifested at a very young age. as soon as he began to understand language, he was observing and understanding the world. he was great at puzzles, riddles, and mathematics. he was called a child genius to offset his strange demeanor. at age six he was placed in a school for (intellectually) gifted children.
now in a social situation with peers and not just in his family home, dazai's alienation became even worse. he was different from kids his age as well. he didn't get happy or excited like they did. it was impossible to reach out to them, to make any sort of meaningful connection. he started getting nicknames at school: the doll, the robot, the machine -- all things not human. not even organic.
dazai was under a lot of pressure to succeed. he was the only heir to the tsushima name. his personality disorder was passed off as an eccentricity of a genius mind. he was told he was going to do great things in the future. that he was going to run the country some day. this is where his perfectionism developed as well as his need to lie as a defense mechanism. he simply could not disappoint anyone.
this was when his depression started to manifest which only made him retreat further into himself. by age nine he was cutting himself just to see if he could bleed.
dazai's first suicide attempt was not actually meant to kill him but to bring him close to death. it was a desperate attempt to seek his father's love. his father always cared about tending to his sick wife more than parenting dazai and so he believed that if he were to also be on death's door then he would finally win his father's attention. he tries to drown himself in the river when the water level is relatively low.
but his plan backfires completely. instead of love, dazai was met with cold anger. his attempted suicide brought shame to the family name and gave his father unwanted publicity. dazai was disowned that night and cut off from any support. he had just turned fourteen.
he's on the streets for a week, trying to get away from his hometown because he still doesn't want to disappoint his father. in this time, dazai becomes disillusioned with life and his own existence. he no longer sees the point of trying after he gave and gave and gave his whole life only to be turned away. seeing his father fight to keep his mother alive though she was suffering from an illness also instilled his values of death in him. that death is just another part of life, that the two coexist to make up the entire experience of being alive. he does not understand why his father would keep his mother suffering by making her live.
dazai tries to take his life in earnest by hanging. an ability user finds him and tries to saving him using his ability. no longer human activates for the first time, stopping the gifted from rescuing him. dazai wakes up in mori's clinic, dehydrated and malnourished from his time on the streets. he's bound under suicide watch and mori offers him a deal: do exactly what he says and he will mix a cocktail that will peacefully kill him. dazai agrees. the rest is history.

The Boy in the Belfry Pt. 11, a Bungo Stray Dogs fic.
I might not be able to update this weekend, but you can read the whole story here. I’ve rewritten some parts for tumblr, nothing major. --- The door to the cool, tiled room opened and a familiar face appeared in the opening. A small streak of light shone on the battered face of the young teenager who sat, cradling himself on the floor.
Dazai's worried face snapped up as Mori entered the room. A twitchy but relieved smile became visible on the teens face in recognition, and Mori smiled back. Something seemed off though. Something in Mori's eyes.
Regret? Maybe even sorrow?
Dazai's faint smile morphed into a scream, as another dog was released into the room. ---
Mori stood expressionless and watched their prisoner. He had been fading in and out of consciousness since they arrived. The lack of smart remarks and smirks from his former apprentice was unnerving, to say the least. It was as if he was looking at the broken ten-year-old who he had saved from the very same man he now had returned him to, so many years ago.
Abducting him from the hospital had been easier than expected. As soon as The Babysitters Club had dispatched, he seemingly had free range. It turned out that there weren't many safety precautions there at all. Mori had walked in, wearing his old white coat and been assumed to be a doctor at the hospital. The elderly receptionist had not hesitated when giving up the room number, and he had walked in, injected the sleeping ADA agent with a mild tranquilizer, unhooked him from any tubes and wires and walked out of there with him in a wheelchair.
It was so easy that it almost felt anticlimactic. It only made him happy that the Port Mafia had their own medical wing, with a large staff and all the facilities necessary to treat any kind of sickness or injury.
The Armed Detective Agency clearly needed to step up their game.
The preacher himself was a big disappointment too. The large and intimidating figure was reduced to nothing more than a hunchbacked old man, who was clearly a little out of touch with reality and completely insane.
At the moment he was downstairs at the altar, switching between preaching and speaking in tongues to an imaginary congregation.
Mori chuckled. He had never in his life believed in any God.
Calmly, he walked towards Dazai, silently assessing his injuries and how much time he had left, if left in this hopeless state.
He reminisced about the first time he had seen Dazai. He passed the old church at random on his way to a mission, while a Sunday service had just finished. The preacher had stood grand and stoic, shaking every single hand as the crowd of people passed on their way out. Behind him stood a boy with half of his face covered in bandages, leaning heavily on crutches.
His black suit made him transparent with the dark walls of the church as he stood, terrified of meeting anyone's gaze. Almost invisible, to anyone but Mori.
To Mori, he shone bright like a firefly in the night. A forsaken soul, a fractured mind and an unforgivable sinner. He was perfect.
Mori asked around about the strange pair. It appeared that this preacher was well known in the more extremist Christian societies of the city at the time. The ones who longed and grasped at something or anything to save them and prove their faith. They would believe anything they were told (or in this case, shown, which further fueled the preacher's narcissism).
This was also the reason no one knew his actual name. In his everyday life, he had taken the name Gen'emon Tsushima (1), and he called Dazai, Shuji (2). But, he wanted to be known simply as the preacher. The Preacher. The one and only. He could show them God, but in his own mind, he probably was the man himself. There was no one registered by the names Gen’emon and Shuji Tsushima in Yokohama- not much research needed to find that out. The Preacher would only call Dazai by his real name whenever he was 'performing', an act that was exclusive and very expensive.
From that point forward, the arrangements had been easy, and Mori had manipulated the situation to seem like any other of the preacher's… gigs.
The fact that the boy's mind had turned on his father was simply a very lucky coincidence.
Mori sighed and looked at the loosening bandages on Dazai's forearms. Every single day of Dazai's life was sketched onto his body in scars.
The leader of the Port Mafia scoffed as an ominous smile came to show on his lips.
---
“What has Skindiana Bones done this time?” sneered an aggravated Chuuya as he answered the phone.
“I might borrow that sometime,” Kunikida mumbled as he waited for the rest of the agency to get seated into the cars.
“Shut your face or tell me what's going on.”
“I wish I could, but I don't really know. Dazai disappeared from the hospital again sometime during the night.”
“I'm shocked,” he said nonchalantly, “but, I haven't heard anything from the bonehead.”
“We're going to The Shinja church right now, we've looked everywhere else.”
Kunikida waited for a reply. When it didn't come any, he continued.
“I thought you might like to know, in case you want to tag along.”
Another silent moment, before an exasperated sigh, was heard from the other end.
“Fine!” and a short 'fuck' was heard as the connection cut.
---
Chuuya wasted no time as he ran to his motorcycle. It was faster and made it easier to pass all the slowpokes on the road. He wondered if he should have told them that Dazai's father was back, but he had no idea how much they already knew. There was no time to explain.
Before starting his bike he suddenly remembered something. Another curse was whispered, as he ran back in to the house and retrieved a bag that he tucked safely in the compartment under the seat before he got on the bike and raced through the morning streets, feeling the fresh puddles of rainwater splash onto his calfs as he headed for that place that made his blood freeze. He just prayed (nonono, no way) hoped it hadn't gotten out of hand.
---
In a different part of town, two more vehicles were speeding towards the Shinja Church. There was no way to know what they would see when they arrived. Atsushi sat in the back of Kunikida's car with Kyouka, as he usually did. Restless legs shook while worried eyes looked out the windows and no one spoke.
Ranpo sat in the passenger seat up front, while Kunikda was driving. Yosano drove the other car, with Kenji and Tanizaki.
They had to park their cars across the street at a parking lot. While they all ushered out of the vehicles, a red and black motorcycle spun past them, and the redheaded driver threw his helmet to the curb and ran to the fence that embraced the dilapidated building.
“Chuuya!” Kunikida yelled as the ran across the road.
The gate was once again chained up, and the short man furiously shook the gate before he started climbing. Kunikida quickly pulled out his notebook and drew some boltcutters that he used to clip the lock.
The gate creaked open with the startled mafia executive on top of it, clinging to it desperately while it slid to the side.
“Patience, my friend,” Kenji smiled as they entered the property.
Chuuya gnarled something inaudible as he jumped off. Kunikida looked ready to open the door, but Chuuya fled up the few steps and stopped him.
“Wait,” he gasped. Kunikida looked confused at him, as Chuuya let go of his tight grip of the tall man's arm.
“The doors were bolted shut the last time we were here,” he said quietly. “There has definitely been someone in here since then. If it's...” how much should he actually tell them?
“Dazai's father?” Ranpo blurted out. Chuuya threw him a skeptical look.
“Do you already know?” he asked.
“No, we don't. It was an educated guess,” Ranpo explained, looking a bit ashamed.
“Well, you're probably right. And if this is in fact what is going on, Dazai might be in very real danger,” Chuuya explained. “Mori might be in there too. The leader of the Port Mafia.”
“Why haven't you told us this befo-” Kunikida's nostrils dilated and his cheeks flushed, but he got interrupted by a dangerous stare from the small man.
“Not the time, sunshine!” Chuuya sneered. “We need to get a move on.”
Chuuya had second thoughts, 'Shit, shit, shit, he's gonna hate me, he's gonna destroy me, completely obliviate me, he's gonna kill me...'
But, he was already here. And Dazai was in there.
He positioned himself to open the doors, and looked at the others, receiving a nod in return. They were ready.
The doors groaned loudly as they opened, and a deranged voice roamed through the voluminous room.
“Shower me in your light! I am nothing but a pawn. Please, listen to a sinners chagrin!”
The lights flickered, and the purple fog returned for the first time in twelve years.
Mori stood by the wall in the sanctuary, looking over to their newest arrivals with a satisfied grin.
Further down at the crossing, Dazai sat slumped on the stairs. He had been discarded of his hospital clothes and lay nearly bare except for the boxer shorts and bandages, half-conscious.
A couple of feet from him, stood The Preacher with his hands reached out and eyes closed as the dark haze engulfed his son's body once again.
Dazai's weak body trembled, from fear or from pain. Maybe both. The convolutions he was far too familiar with had started, turned more violent and soon he lay limp on his side.
The earth stood still. No sound, no light, no movement, no nothing.
Until suddenly Dazai arched his broken back with a loud gasp, as the blackened fog exited from his mouth and transformed to an apparition in front of him.
The newly entered crowd stood paralyzed, watching the unbelievable sight.
Not only was this an ability that none of them had ever seen or heard of, but it worked on Dazai. The shock was even bigger as the apparition turned more and more recognizable.
Even Mori was stunned.
It was Dazai.

When I know I should be doing other things but making a family for my dear Shuji (aka Dazai), I ended up somehow making up his family. I have taken up another muse, the eldest brother (Katsumi). I mean I know every Dazai is different but shrugs--- hey my muses sort of now just write themselves \o/  What can I say. I have lost all control and the muses have taken over. I mean I don’t mind too much. Anyways below the break I will start talking about Shuji’s (Dazai) family.
Father:   Gen'emon Tsushima (Originally from the  Matsuki family--- chosen to marry the eldest daughter of the Tsushima family-- as he wasn’t the oldest son nor heir of his family.)
Mother:  Tane Tsushima
Gen’emon and Tane bore eight children and lived with the Tsushima manor located in  Kanagi, a remote corner of Japan at the Northern tip of Tōhoku in Aomori Prefecture. The manor didn’t only house Shuji and his siblings along with his parents but other relatives as well (thirty people lived in the house) this did not include the servants.
Tane was an ill woman, but she didn’t always show signs of her health struggles. Where as Gen’emon was the head of the family and typically was not home as he traveled a lot. Though when he was home he thought it was a decent thing to teach his youngest son that the world was not fair in life. He saw his youngest (Shuji) as an ability less born child to a family full of successful ability users. He thought abusing his son would help him to form his ability--- though he wasn’t aware that his son did possess a passive ability- No Longer Human.
Tsushima siblings:
Eldest: Katsumi  (Age 34)
Hiroyoshi (32)
Kazuya (29)
Takashi (27)
Yasuo (25)
Kouta (25)
Ren (Only female born to the Tsushima family) (One year older than Shuji)  ( 23)
Youngest- Shuji (Dazai) (Present age 22)
It was like an unspoken rule that everyone born with the Tsushima bloodline would be born successful and with abilities that would only help them in life. This of course didn’t include Shuji, as he was seen as the black sheep of the family. He would eventually be disowned (in canon verse) and eventually take the name of Dazai Osamu.
Gen’emon would mold Katsumi to be the heir who would end up taking his place when he died. Though he did try to spend time with Shuji, taking the youngest to Yokohama. He had plans to marry his youngest off, but only if he could get the other to behave and stop acting like a clown. The plan to marriage would have been to Miran Lee (@frozcnlight)-- who ended up being the only friend that Shuji had ever made.
Gen’emon would disown Shuji after traveling back from Yokohama. Soon after the head of the Tsushima family would die of tuberculous and Katsumi would take over as head. Tane would have long passed away by this time due to her ill health. Though when she was alive she would not wish to have anything to do with Shuji by the time he reached six (it had been a slow process but she kept pushing him away more and more.) Due to his upbringing Shuji despises his family and doesn’t know the meaning of love truly nor human emotions fully.

_________________________
◎ A gathering that Rikyū hosted for Ōtomo Yoshimune [大友義統], the son of Ōtomo Sōrin [大友宗麟], and another samurai, probably as part of their official reception at Juraku-tei, since, as Lord of Bungo, Yoshimune would have been responsible for organizing the troops provided by the various daimyō of Kyūshū for Hideyoshi’s upcoming invasion of the continent, and was in Kyōto to give Hideyoshi a status report.
¹Onaji jū-go nichi ・ hiru  [同十五日・晝].
It is still the First Lunar Month.
²No guests are mentioned in the kaiki as it was published in the Rikyū Chanoyu Sho.
The manuscripts, however, all list two guests:
▵ Bungo Yoshimune [豊後よしむね]*: the name Bungo Yoshimune [usually written 豊後義宗] refers to Ōtomo Yoshimune [大友義統; 1558 ~ 1610], a daimyō-nobleman and Lord of Bungo Province, who was the eldest son and heir of Ōtomo Sōrin [大友宗麟].  He served as Captain of the Left Guards (sahyōe-no-kami [左兵衛督]), holding the junior grade of the Fifth Rank; and as an Imperial Chamberlain (jijū [侍従]) and Imperial Councillor (sangi [參議]), for which he received the junior grade of the Fourth Rank.
He participated in the invasion of the continent, but apparently displayed cowardice in the face of the Chinese and Korean armies, for which he was forced to forfeit Bungo upon his return to Japan.  Nevertheless, he sided with Ishida Mitsunari and the Western Army against Tokugawa Ieyasu at Sekigahara, for which he was exiled to Shishido in Hitachi, where he died in 1610.
Yoshimune had been baptized a Christian, on the orders of his father†, but he seems to have been indifferent to the faith (unlike his father, Ōtomo Sōrin).  Some say that he returned to the faith during the years of his exile, but this is not substantiated by most documents from that period.
▵ Takayama Kanzaemon [高山勘左衛門]:  this person has not been identified.  This is not a reference to Takayama ukon “Nanbō” [高山右近 “南坊”], nor does it seem to be one of his sons.
There was a man known as Sobue Kanzaemon [祖父江勘左衛門; his dates of birth and death are not known], who was descended from the hereditary priests officiating at the Tsushima Jinja [津島神社] in Owari Province.  The family had been retainers of the Oda and Yamauchi clans; and this Kanzaemon subsequently served Toyotomi Hidetsugu, marrying the widow of Takamura Gen'emon [筧源右衛門; dates unknown], from whom the Sobue family descends.
However whether this is actually the man to whom this entry points, or not, is impossible to establish from the surviving documents of the period**. ___________ *The Hisada family's version of the kaiki, however, does not include the personal name Yoshimune (the entry for the shōkyaku is simply “Bungo [豊後]).
This, and other occasional similarities between the Hisada version (where it differs from the other manuscript copies) and the Rikyū Chanoyu Sho, suggests that a hand-made copy of the Hisada manuscript (probably in a poor state of preservation) was the original source referenced by the editors when preparing the Rikyū Chanoyu Sho for publication.
†His mother, though Sōrin's wife, was vehemently anti-Christian; and it seems that it was from her that Yoshimune inherited his religious apathy.  His mother's name has been lost, and she is known to history only by the Jesuits' derogatory epithet of Jezebel.
‡At this early point in time Sobue [祖父江] seems to have been simply the name of the place where the family originally lived.  Their actual clan relationship is not known.  The name Soboe was first used as a family name by Kanzaemon's son.
**It is entirely possible that this man was an attendant of Ōtomo Yoshimune, and participated in that capacity.
³The room that Rikyū used for this chakai is not mentioned in the Rikyū Chanoyu Sho.
According to the manuscripts, it was the 2-mat room in Rikyū’s Juraku-tei residence.
Tumblr media
⁴Chaire ・ Tenka-ichi  [茶入 ・ 天下一].
This entry most likely refers to the shin-nakatsugi [眞中次] that was made for Rikyū by Hideyoshi’s lacquer artist, Tenka-ichi Seiami [天下一 盛阿弥]*.
Tumblr media
The identity of this tea container has been debated by scholars.  Because of the way the name appears in the manuscripts -- Tenka-ichi ・ chaire  [天下一・茶入] -- many† have argued that this was the name of a ceramic chaire.  The problem with this position is that it relies on the Edo period language whereby a ceramic tea container was called a chaire [茶入], while one made of lacquerware (or some other material) was termed a chaki [茶器] (or, some aver, a natsume [なつめ = 棗] -- irrespective of the container’s actual shape).
The problem is that Rikyū did not subscribe to such usages (all tea containers were generically referred to as “chaire [茶入]” by him, regardless of from what material they were made‡); and, furthermore, outside of its being mentioned in several entries in the Hyakkai Ki, a “chaire” named Tenka-ichi [天下一] is otherwise unknown.
On the only earlier occasion when Rikyū used a tea container described as the Tenka-ichi chaire [天下一 茶入] that is also supported by a second account of the same chakai written by one of the guests (namely, the gathering on the 20th day of the Ninth Month of Tenshō 18, which Rikyū hosted for Kamiya Sōtan [神谷宗湛; 1551 ~ 1635]), Sōtan  wrote in his notes that the “chaire” was a shin-nakatsugi [眞中次] (made by Tenka-ichi Seiami [天下一 盛阿弥], Hideyoshi’s personal lacquer artisan).
It is, therefore, most likely that Rikyū once again used this nakatsugi on the present occasion, if only because this allowed him to avoid any suggestion (even if only in his own mind) of this being an atomi for the earlier chakai that he had hosted that day -- without changing the essential feeling of the tori-awase**. ___________ *Perhaps it had been made as a gift from Hideyoshi to Rikyū, though this is speculative.  The assumption is based on the reverence that Rikyū seems to have felt for this tea container -- which the simple ascription of the piece to Seiami (a contemporary craftsman), in and of itself, would not seem to justify.
†Principally scholars who appear to be intent on damaging the credibility of documents such as the Rikyū Chanoyu Sho -- primarily (it seems to this author) because the content of such classical writings diverges from their sponsoring institution’s (i.e., tea school’s) vision of how chanoyu should be practiced (in the present day).  Since the school most openly associated with this philosophy is also the one responsible for the greatest number of modern publications related to chanoyu and chanoyu scholarship, their opinion seems -- at first glance -- to represent the majority opinion.
‡Prior to the Edo period, the dichotomy of koicha no dōgu [濃茶道具], as opposed to usucha-yō no dōgu [薄茶用の道具], did not exist.  The criterion for whether any given utensil was suitable for chanoyu was whether it could be used to make koicha well.  Separating utensils into things suitable for koicha (“heavy,” “serious” utensils), and things suitable for usucha (colored or decorative objects) is a product of the Edo period utensil-oriented tea.
A good example of this kind of thinking is the (modern) teaching that red raku chawan should be used for usucha, while black raku chawan are primarily to be used for koicha.  If the reader will take the time to look through the Rikyū Hyakkai Ki, he will immediately notice that Rikyū used his red Ko-mamori chawan [木守茶碗] much more frequently than any of his other bowls (despite the fact that he owned several kuro-chawan, and used them occasionally):  and at every one of the gatherings documented in this series of kaiki, his priority was always to serve koicha.  That he also used the same bowl to serve usucha afterward is irrelevant, since he also used the same chaire (including the very “heavy” chaire that were paired with small trays) to serve usucha as well.
Consequently, to say that ceramic “chaire” [茶入] are used for koicha, and lacquered “chaki” [茶器] should primarily be used for usucha would have sounded nonsensical to him.
**In fact, Rikyū actually does something very interesting over the course of this day (and it is difficult to think that this was entirely coincidental):
- at the morning gathering, he used his Shiri-bukura chaire (which has the meibutsu diameter of 2-sun 2-bu, the same as his chū-natsume);
- at the fu-ji chakai that followed the morning gathering, Rikyū used a ko-natsume (the size of which was derived from the typical ko-tsubo chaire); and,
- at this midday gathering, he used a shin-nakatsugi, which is the same size as the classical “large katatsuki.”
He thus used one tea container from each of the classical sizes:  but also he did this in their correct historical order:  the earliest chanoyu gathering held in Japan that is documented in the historical records occurred on the 18th day of the Sixth Month of 1403, and on that occasion the Kamakura nasu [鎌倉茄子] (which was 2-sun 2-bu in diameter) was used as the chaire.  Following this, however, the ko-tsubo became the preferred chaire for the various forms of gokushin tea that were practiced during the first half of the fifteenth century.  And then, during the second half of the century, the wabi practitioners, such as Shukō and his followers, began to use the large katatsuki (and the shin-nakatsugi) as their preferred tea containers.
⁵Ori-tame [折ため].
Tumblr media
Only the chaire and the chashaku are mentioned in this kaiki, as it was published in the Rikyū Chanoyu Sho.  The remainder of the tori-awase has been added from the manuscripts.
⁶Arare-gama  [あられ釜].

⁷Wage mizusashi  [〇げ水指].

⁸Ko-mamori no chawan  [木守ノ茶碗].

In addition to which Rikyū would most likely have used a take-wa [竹輪] as his futaoki, and a mentsū [面桶] as the mizu-koboshi.

⁹Bizen tsubo [びぜんつぼ].
Tumblr media
¹⁰Sashimi ・ koi,  konowata,  shiru ・ miso-yaki,  meshi  [さしミ ・ こい、 このわた、 汁 ・ みそやき、 めし].
These were the four foods served to the guests on their zen:
- koi sashimi  [鯉 さしみ]*;
- konowata  [海鼠腸]:  the salted gonads of the sea-cucumber (including their contents);
- miso-yaki jiru  [味噌焼汁]:  is miso-shiru containing julienned daikon and a single large piece of grilled momen-tōfu [木綿豆腐]; and,
- meshi [飯]:  steamed rice. __________ *This is what is known as koi-arai [鯉洗い] today:  after cleaning and removing the fillets, they are first placed in a hot-water bath, and then chilled before slicing and serving.
¹¹Tai ・ aburite  [引テ  鯛 ・ あぶりテ].
Tai [鯛] is sea bream, while the verb aburu [炙る] means to roast or grill*.  In other words, charcoal-grilled tai was served as the hiki-mono [引物]†.  This was the yaki-mono [焼物] coarse.
The reader should note that, contrary to contemporary practices‡, Rikyū's kaiseki did not follow any set pattern, and the hiki-mono (which was the course that would serve as a side-dish to accompany the drinking of sake) was the food that Rikyū felt would be most suitable out of the things that he had prepared on that occasion, regardless of what sort of food it actually was. __________ *This is one of the few instances where the word aburite is found in the manuscripts of the Rikyū Hyakkai Ki.
The verbs aburu [炙る] and yaku [焼く] are essentially synonymous.
†The hiki-mono was always accompanied by the more or less free drinking of sake  [酒].
‡Which arose in the early Edo period, as part of the standardization of the practice of chanoyu.
This originally was based on the notion that everyone involved in the gathering should be aware of what was coming next, so that nobody would be caught off guard or taken by surprise -- since, when daimyō and their guards were involved, that could possibly have resulted in violence.  (In earlier times, the people attending chanoyu gatherings did so because they wished to attend -- even if only to please Nobunaga or Hideyoshi.  In the Edo period, however, chanoyu was to be included -- by fiat of the Tokugawa bakufu -- in all official receptions in which a representative of the bakufu was involved.  As such, many of the guests were unwilling participants, and occasionally the disaffected -- a class of which there were a great many in the aftermath of the civil war between the Toyotomi and the Tokugawa houses that polarized the entire country into two camps -- were sometimes inclined to indulge in nefarious plans against the other participants, since nobody was free to decline.)
¹²Kashi ・ yaki-mochi,  iri-gaya,  shiitake  [菓子 ・ やきもち、 いりがや、 しいたけ].
    The kashi served were:
- yaki-mochi [焼き餅], toasted mochi;
- iri-gaya (also pronounced iri-kaya) [煎り榧], the roasted nuts of the Japanese allspice tree (also known as the Japanese nutmeg yew); and,
- shiitake [椎茸], which refers to grilled shiitake mushrooms.

BSD! OC! Kyoushi Verlaine |P2
Despite his lack of a combative Ability, he is a skilled Marital Artist
His Code Name, Vide means Void in French
After the war of the Resistance vs The Rats House of the Dead, he was kidnapped and had his Persona taken and implanted in another, killing him on separation
He was Lovecraft's former contractor, he was contracted during the Casino Arc
Instead of having a Yozo Cognition, Kyoushi's and Yozo's Palaces were mutually linked
Kyoushi's Ability could be triggered by entering his Palace
After leaving the Mafia with Yozo, Yozo gifted him his new hat to replace his old Mafia one
At some point near the end of the War, Kyoushi breaks up with Gen'emon
Gen'emon is very possessive of Kyoushi, as he stood by him even though he left the Mafia
(Like Oda to Dazai, Kyoushi to Gen'emon)
Kyoushi and Gen'emon have matching bracelets, Blue (right) and White (left) respectively
Despite Kyoushi's dislike of drinking, Gen'emon encourages it because of Kyoushi loving the taste
He is often the one escorting his colleague, Tarou Edogawa
Kyoushi is a French Immigrant, having moved to Japan when he was 14
Before Japan, he was only known by his surname, having never been given a first name
The name 'Kyoushi' was given to him by the Tsushima Twins
The only thing he knew about his parents is that they were called Mr and Mrs Verlaine
His Silver Mafia hat was gifted to him by the Twins
Kyoushi often styles his fringe to be spiky, unlike it's natural fluffiness
He used to wear a Beret, gifted to him by another immigrant
However, it was later ruined during his early scuffles with the Tsushima Twins
He still keeps the damaged beret to this day
His favorite food is escargot, this resulted in the nickname 'Slug'
Yozo often calls him Shishi, much to his annoyance
A while after his break up, Yozo and Kyoushi talk through their feelings, however Kyoushi decides he needs more time and they both agree to wait until after the war
Kyoushi goes missing before they get the chance
In Kyoushi's version of the suicide bomber kid, Fyodor makes the child destroy his hat in the explosion
He is an incarnate, but because of constantly being around Gen'emon, he doesn't really remember anymore
In Paris, Tarou and Kyoushi do private detective work and research into Hawkmoth
-
Dazai's Entrance Exam (Anime Ver)
Yozo, Kyoushi and Atsushi pursue the kidnapper
Kyoushi gets a Vision before the Port Mafia's attack
He already anticipates Phantom's (Akutagawa's) attack, however notices how he doesn't arrive but Atsushi is with him unlike his vision
Before he can figure it out, 'Atsushi' attacks in his place, choosing long range because of witnessing Kyoushi's Marital Arts
The rest goes like normal, Phantom leaving when he realizes he's outmatched, finding it not worth Kyoushi's bounty

BSD! OC! Gen'emon Tsushima |P2
-:Trivia:-
At some point near the end of the War, Kyoushi breaks up with Gen'emon and eventually ends up with Yozo
Gen'emon is very possessive of Kyoushi, as he stood by him even though he left the Mafia
(Like Oda to Dazai, Kyoushi to Gen'emon)
Gen'emon is abusive towards Phantom and often takes advantage of Flawless Dispute
This leads to Phantom despising him, Rubi, Ichigo and Phantom often try to kill him
Despite what others may think, he isn't suicidal, just incredibly unlucky
He and Kyoushi have matching bracelets, White (left) and Blue (right) respectively. Gen'emon is protective of his
'Pure State of Mind' references to the fact that Gen'emon believes he should be able to indulge in any of his true desires
He enjoys playing his Banjo, especially when Kyoushi chooses to listen
His Palace is a Grave Yard where he digs up corpses to use for the Port Mafia, Ryūnosuke's Shadow is one of them
In the distance, their is a mirage of a circus, however to enter pass the invisible barrier, you need Yozo's key words
Both of the Twins' Shadows can pass though it freely
Because of their linked Palaces, the Twins have 'Twin telepathy' moments
Gen'emon's Treasure is hidden in a joint child's grave, belonging to him and Yozo
Because of it being his Coat, his Shadow doesn't wear it
Despite Kyoushi's dislike of drinking, Gen'emon encourages it because of Kyoushi loving the tastit
From a young age, Gen'emon had a tracker implanted in Ryūnosuke's right shoulder, though he rarely uses it
He found both of the Niiharas as orphans when Ryūnosuke was 11
Shadow!Gen'emon dug up Ryūnosuke's corpse that was soon possessed by an Inugami (Ryūnosuke's ability)
His brutal training towards Phantom fuels Niihara's spite which gets him to work harder, Gen'emon uses it to his advantage
Yozo has once set up an entire Ghost rumor just to scare Gen'emon during a Summer Festival, especially when he couldn't purify the ghost (Yozo in disguise)

BSD! OC! Ryūnosuke Niihara |P4
If Takeo Kagami used her Ability Lier Lier on him with the question 'Who are you?' Or 'What's your name?'. His honest answer would be whatever part he is currently playing
Ryūnosuke for his child self, Niihara for his adult self
He is too drowned under the masks to know his real self
Because of relying on an underground doctor for both his medication and severe injuries, Ougai Mori often experiments on Niihara without him realizing
This includes most of his medication being drug tests instead of being for his sickness
-
During the Gifted War, the fight against Kamui is replaced with Nagisa
Niihara's death was caused by his Ability being told by an unknown voice (punishment) to kill his allies
To prevent this, his ability had to murder Niihara before Niihara could kill them
Unfortunately, because his mentor was in his sights, his successor mistook the voice for Gen'emon
-
Gin Akutagawa styled her mafia hair after hearing stories about her superior Rubi
From a young age, Ryūnosuke had a tracker implanted in his right shoulder, he went most of his life without knowing because Gen'emon rarely used it
Akira Kurusu started the Hierophant confidant with him while he was disguised as Ichigo Natsuko
He and his sister were found as orphans by Gen'emon when Ryūnosuke was 11
In his Palace, Shadow!Ryūnosuke's corpse was dug up by Gen'emon and soon possessed by an Inugami (Flawless Dispute)

Dazai's season 2, PM kidnapping
During the Casino Arc, Yozo gets themself kidnapped by the Port Mafia, Chuuya mistakes them as Gen'emon dressed differently and is later approached by their twin in private
Yozo blackmails Gen'emon to swap places and they proceed to impersonate eachother, this results in Phantom 'Agura' getting to torture the 'prisoner'
Agura uses the similar appearance and mannerisms to let off some steam
Even though seeing through it, Chuuya let's Phantom have his outlet
A few old members of the Mafia recognize Yozo's act, however do not say anything for individual reasons
-
Phantom's brutal training fuels Niihara's spite which gets him to work harder, Gen'emon uses it to his advantage

BSD:LS!RAU! Fyodor Sougen | P2
-:Etymology:-
• The name Fyodor (Фёдор) means 'divine gift'
• The surname Dostoevsky (Достоевский) means from Dostoev, Belarus
• The name Sōgen means 'grass' (草/kusu) and 'original' (原/hara)
• The name Ayato is written interchangeably between different Kanji, therefore it has many meanings
• The name Hane (羽) means 'wing'
--
-:Namesake:-
Ayato Satoshi (unknown lifespan)
A Multilingual short story writer whose works explore found family, psychology and the true self. Satoshi's works are extremely hard to translate because of his tendency to switch languages mid sentence. One of his lesser known books 'Myosotis Meadows' is about how a person with Alzheimer's who somehow finds and befriends the same people again and again, no mater how often they forget.
--
-:Trivia:-
Memories are vague and foggy, still suffers with Alzheimer's
Grew up mostly non-verbel because of their struggle with the Russian language, later on they just prefer it
He understands English, Japanese and French
His Ability is Chorus of Souls mixed with Crime and Punishment
He'd still have Chorus of Souls, CnP will just manifest differently
Myosotis and Daylily
Myosotis, the plant group of Forget-me-nots
Daylily, symbol of forgetfulness and memory loss in Chinese culture
Lug, Meadow in Russian
He is incredibly forgetful, this causes part of his Palace to often be obscured by heavy fog
His Palace is a 'Paradise', Meadow in the clouds. Often changing form depending on his beliefs/mental state
It would remind them of a place he can't quite remember
Ayato finds their mind is clearer when borderline asleep, this causes him to write his plans in a notebook so he can follow them when lucid

He likes the smell of lavenders, though isn't fond of their raw taste
As an informent, they often use notes to exchange information
He is very passionate about chemistry, somehow creating strange concoctions
He often wears a Periwinkle cloth over his eyes
His back is very sensitive as he has a painful butterfly shaped scar on his shoulder blades and back
His original reason for starting the war is because it reminds him of a faint memory
His original death was a kidnapping and torture during a war, they cut off his wings and used that spot for the killing blow
His shadow has pegasus wings
His favorite name to go by is Hane
Fyodor Sougen is his 'true self', in this mind state his is the most natural and prefers his natural hair
As Ayato Hane his mind is more foggy and he often forgets he's the villain
Ayato prefers to dye his hair Orange, though is often disappointed when it becomes Black again
(Fyodor often re-dyes it back)
The same can be said for his Pink eyes, Fyodor puts in Maroon contacts
He was born with his scar, an orange hair streak and pink eyes
Sometimes he believes his Ability merely puts people to sleep, this never ends well
He has no idea why Yozo Tsushima hates him so much, but it hurts to feel a Soul so similar to his own and yet much healthier. This fulls his resentment of the Tsushimas
He is scared of Gen'emon, because for some reason he can't sense him and yet he can Never forget him
He often gets Yozo's name wrong, half because of forgetfulness and half because it annoys Yozo
An 'Adrik' incarnation would take on the name Hane
He is the most expressive with his shoulders
He prefers to fight using two swords
It took him years (since junior high) and Naoto's help to recreate to chemical structure of Alicorn Crystal, he later uses this to create poisons and his final Swords

BSD! OC! Yozo Tsushima | P4
She claimed the name Fei as a symbol of a new life untied to the chains of their Ability
While working with Kyoushi, they carried spare painkillers for him
They often call Kagami, Gami-chan
-
Yozo's disguised form of the Fox Miraculous is unknown as he hides wrapped around one of his wrists and hidden under his bandages
However, Fei's is attached to her choker like a charm
It's disguised as a Silver kitsune who's silhouette looks like a flame, the cluster of tails are adorned with a Red gem centered above it's head
When transformed, it is hidded inside their bell
-
In the Dragon Head Incident, Selfaware would form into a sentient book and torment Fei. She would later be rescued by Pure State of Mind, showing how her brother did care for them in his own way
He has once set up an entire Ghost rumor just to scare Gen'emon during a Summer Festival, especially when he couldn't purify the ghost (Yozo in disguise)
Despite being terrible at instruments, they can play the Piano surprisingly well, but only with their eyes closed
They sometimes have Mute days
Fei's beige coat after Rank 10 is just their old one with the length cut shorter and used for a hood

Yozo Tsushima to the Audience
"This is going to be an interesting story, now isn't it?"
Yozo Tsushima (津島 要造,, Tsushima Yōzō) was a member of the Tower Detective Agency and former mafioso of the Port Mafia. They have the Ability named Selfaware.
Personality: Suicidal, Deceptive, Childish, Clever, Mischievous, Mute(15/Sometimes)
Confidant/Arcana: Death
-:Ability:-
Selfaware (自己認識,, Jikoninshiki) allows Yozo to receive random bursts of information that the audience of Bungou Stray Dogs: Lost Souls would know. They have no control over the information and often receives it out of context (eg, Dazai nullifying the Weretiger when meeting Atsushi Hinata). This also allows them to break the 4th wall. It is later found out that their ability originally made them completely self aware, but they gained a mental block growing up because of the mental strain.
Yozo is also shown to be able to interact with the animation effects, despite being the only one to see them. This makes it look like he can stand on air, interact with people from across the room, be touched by invisible forces and even suddenly appear and disappear. For example, by interacting with another's chibi when in conversation in different rooms, it feels like the recipient is being touched by them.
