Can I ask for the powers and Homeworld role of a tashmarine?

Well, given how unbelievably long it's been since this ask was sent in, I doubt you need or want this answer anymore, Anon. However, I remembered this blog exists, and kind of miss it, so I will answer old asks for my own peace of mind.

Powers for Tashmarine:

• Water related abilities - The name Tashmarine comes from 'Tash' from 'Tashkent' where the stone was discovered, and 'marine' meaning, well, ocean or water. Maybe something like purifying water, controlling bubbles, turning their form into water, or weather related powers could work.

•Blood manipulation - some believe that Diopside, the family of stones Tashmarine is part of, helps with blood health. However, this power may not make much sense to you as gems have no blood. You could perhaps stretch this concept a little and give your Tashmarine abilities such as;

•Possession or controlling other's bodies,

•Energy control, be it in all livings things or just gems. If they were strong enough, maybe they could knock out a being instantly, or revert a gem's form to a smaller size.

As for Homeworld roles, if we take into consideration the possible abilities above:

•Overseeing the plans for terraforming of planets, or assuring they are safe to be colonised.

•If you want the water purification ability, they could make sure places like Sea Spires and Reefs are safe from water damage.

•Gem surgeon - this is a bit of a silly one, but I like it. As I imagine gems with profound healing abilities might not always be easy to come by, especially for serious injuries, perhaps a Tashmarine could work on temporary fixes for injuries like cracks or chips.

•Lastly, for the possession abilities, I feel like an interrogator would be a very fun role. They could force gems to talk, or even from a dramatic story perspective, you could have a Tashmarine who possessed a gem so they could commit a crime themselves, unnoticed.

Again, I know you probably are no longer in need of this information, however when the Rock Autism(tm) strikes, I have to feed it somehow.

Question, how are you so good at art? I mean, it’s all subjective really but your specific art and colour combinations really tickle that itch in my autistic brain.

I've been drawing since I have memory. One of my earliest memory was at maybe 5, drawing Spyro. I started drawing gems at 15 maybe? A lot of the gemsonas from that era are lost to time, but I do remember they were requests (wow, me doing free art? Unheard of!).

Started taking art more seriously when I started this blog, at 2019. I have no job and by the time I was dealing with some serious depresssion shit so when I was sad I took drawing as a therapy. I drew a lot. So I still draw a lot since it's what I'm used to do or else it feels weird haha. I can guarantee your skills will improve on a speed demon level if you have no job and aren't the type of person that likes going outside.

Now more seriously, between 2019 and 2024 a lot of time happens. Art takes a while and one can get mentally burn, so while my hands rest, I can take my time to improve and get stronger. Mindlessly drawing can make lineart and coloring faster but designing can get weirder in the sense of not knowing what to do and just overcomplicating things. Here's my favourite example, good 'ol Blizzard! And I'm still not happy with the damn thing! Art can be personal, art can be a challenge, art can be fun, depends on how you take it. All you have to do is not to give up.

Art feels like a beast to dominate, you need to understand it to break it (I say this as a self-taught artist). No one, and I repeat, NO ONE, starts drawing good. If you don't draw good at the first time, don't give up. You don't like it? Too bad! Art is subjective and just because you don't like it, it doesn't mean someone else won't either. You don't like it because you saw the full progress, of course it doesn't surprise you. But it can surprise someone else!

This drawing right here is the FIRST digital drawing I made (I already drew a lot of paper, I'm sure you can tell haha). I used no layers because I had no idea they existed. Same gang ages later. And they still need to be updated!

Art is constant practice. A commission? Oops, it's actually practice regardless of how serious it is because in the future you will get better, you just have to not give up.

About the whole colouring part, I usually don't overthink it much. If it fits, it sits. BUT I do put it to a test. Does it have a lot of neon colours? Does it look cool? Then I have a problem because if I put that to greyscale and I can't see any difference because it all becomes a grey mass that's an issue. That and limiting the palette, depending on the character's complexity.

Per example when I draw on my art-style (hiii new followers who don't know my art style), I have to play with greyscales a lot to make sure all details can be seen.

I'm sure you get the point by now. I really want to do a video someday reacting to my pile of sketchbooks full of old drawings and do more lessons and all that stuff haha. It's not just about "drawing a lot since old age", that's boogus. It's more about "drawing a lot, having patience, learning from mistakes, research about art and keep drawing".

End of An Era

(Don’t worry, this post won’t contain any spoilers from tonight’s episodes. Gemsona-HQ still has a “one week spoiler-free” rule we abide by, even for the season finale!)

If you’ll indulge me, I wanted to share a little bit of this blog’s history. 

In 2014, Steven Universe was already nearing peak popularity. The first Gemsona Week had wrapped up, we finally got our introduction to Sugilite, a long-anticipated character and episode, and gemsonas were popping up faster than Gems out of a Kindergarten. Fueled by love for the show and love for the wonderful gemsona community Gemsona Week exposed me to, I created Gemsona-HQ April of 2014 and posted our first monthly prompts in May.

In the nearly 7 years since I started this blog, I’ve never once stopped being impressed by the amount of love and creativity the gemsona community puts into their characters. From fanart to fanfics to animation and music, this community has always been bursting with positivity, and it’s something I’m proud to be a part of. As both a professional writer and educator, I’m always amazed by how people can take inspiration from the series they love and make their own creations from it. When I first designed this blog, I wanted to give advice on character design and give young creators a nudge in the right direction in the hopes that they remembered my advice when designing original characters for their own stories. Now, I think what I enjoy most is being able to give people time in the spotlight by sharing their work on Gemsona-HQ.

Like with all shows that experience *cough* setbacks due to poor network scheduling, it’s unsurprising that both the Steven Universe and gemsona community have seen a slowdown lately (especially within the past few years, due to the fact that Tumblr is, frankly, a dysfunctional social media platform that seems incapable of not shooting itself in the foot). I don’t expect to see this trend do a 180 anytime soon, especially now that the series is over.

What does this mean for Gemsona-HQ?

I like running this blog. I wouldn’t still be here if I didn’t. I may feel a wild range of Abject Unquantifiable Emotions every time I remember how many years I’ve been doing this, but it’s true. For the foreseeable future, as long as the gemsona community continues to exist, I’ll stick around and keep queuing things. As for the prompts, I may start phasing out the Monthly Prompts within the next few months. I always try to keep prompts fun and relevant to the show, but now that the series is finished, I worry they might become repetitive or stale. To compensate, I could continue to do the Monthly Gem Challenge posts if a significant amount of people are interested, but as of right now, I haven’t decided.

For the time being, I wanted to say thank you for sharing your gemsonas, and thanks for sticking around. I know some of you have been with Gemsona-HQ from the beginning, and I always smile when I see your Gems show up in the tag.

I hope you and your family and friends are all staying healthy and safe during these stressful times. Take care of each other.

Of course it was Spinel

So the new movie gem seems to be a Spinel, which is really bad news for my old Spinels, since they look nothing like the canon one, MEANING I need gems types that come in Red, Purple, and Pink that are not any of the following gems:

Quartzes: Wouldn't work because my pre-canon Spinels aren't big or buff

Tourmalines: Wouldn't work because I already have tourmalines (Who I aLSO have to rename because tourmalines are canon to, E.G.: watermelon Tourmaline)

Beryls: Wouldn't work because, well, SU really likes their beryl gems and has a trend of making them small (Which my old Spinels are not, they're lik 5' 6"-ish)

Sorry in advance if I seem salty or anything, wasn't having a good day to begin with and having to rename gems isn't fun at all, Im gonna need a lot of help with this because I'm super indecisive. Pleaaaase leave me some suggestions on some more uncommon gemstones that come in a wide range of colors, it would be highly appreciated! I know I'm not a big blog but I'll give a shoutout to whoever gives the best suggestion! And to everyone else who has to change their spinels now, I feel ya, I feel ya :/

Era 3 AU - New Characters: Dr. Marine, Candy Pearl, and Iris Agate

Here are three new OCs that will make an appearance in the sequel after Ocean Moon. I might have mentioned an early version of one of them at some point??? Anyway more will be revealed about them later on, but here are some basic info on them:

Abby-Marie Campbell(nicknamed Dr. Marine): An Aquamarine who’s one of the most popular doctors in Beach City. She was once a normal Aquamarine, but after Era 3, she visited Earth and became fascinated with humans and their biology, even giving herself the human name Abby-Marie. She is the first Gem to ever attend and graduate medical school, during that time she met her husband who is a writer. This Gem loves what she does (she’s done so much good for the people of Beach City and beyond) and cares for all of her patients, especially the children. Deep down, she wonders what it’s like to be a mother.

Candy Pearl: One of the many Pearls living on Pearl Row in Beach City. She has a sort of a reputation... she’s known for being quite promiscuous, having frequent... encounters with both humans and Gems alike. Despite the fact that this has caused the other Pearls to take a disliking to her, she’s actually a genuinely nice person and wishes people would stop shaming her for what she enjoys. There’s a reason she does what she does, and it’s not for attention like everyone thinks. Her personality is very outgoing and flirty, but will happily stop when asked. No one knows this, but she has a secret hobby...

Iris Agate: This rare Agate is famous all over Earth. Usually a cloudy white color, her Gem becomes a rainbow under the right light - a spotlight! She’s the star of The Iris Agate Show, a popular musical TV show meant for children and families. Flamboyant, enthusiastic, and cheerful, episodes of this show usually involve multiple musical numbers starring her and her Crew: seven singing Gems who star as supporting characters in her many tuneful adventures. Even though the show is meant for children, many older audiences appreciate it for its memorable songs and guest stars. Mara happens to love this show. Fun fact, this show airs on the same channel as “Painting With Blue Pearl”.

Hi! I wonder what kind of abilities and maybe weapon a Sea Glass gem could have?

Abilities:

You could go the obvious (/lh) route and have them control water. But there are a lot of gems that control water, so you might not want that. Perhaps glass manipulation - like controlling and shaping molten glass, and/or utilising shards of glass to their advantage - could be interesting.

Since sea glass is formed over spending a lot of time in the water, maybe a sea glass gem could be able to see into the past through use of water or glass - similar to how Lapis Lazuli did in the show. Or, they could communicate with someone over a long distance using some kind of glass portal (like gem Zoom) without having to utilise any gem technology, alluding to messages in glass bottles and such.

Finally, I feel like the ability to create clones - like holograms, but made of glass instead of light - would be very cool. Perhaps they look identical to the gem aside from a few features - maybe hazy eyes or slightly reflective skin. I think this ties in to glass being reflective and creating some neat patterns when light hits it.

Weapon:

-Throwable bottles with poisonous gas, sleep gas, or mist that impairs vision (like splash potions in minecraft)

-If you decide to go with the glass manipulation idea, maybe they could forge weapons out of glass. They'd shatter after a few hits, but be very strong and could take any shape - also, glass shards can hurt a lot, too.

-Magical mirror - maybe it can fire some sort of laser or reflect enemy attacks back at them

-Magic wand

OH THANK YOU I wanted to do something for them on the blog but I had no idea what to do and then my computer semi-broke BUT it seems all better now :D

My holidays were pretty fun actually !! We went to a local zoo for Wigilia and while I have mixed feelings about zoos in general the outing was still enjoyable and we had icy poles at the end then went to a restaurant for dinner

(After that I spent the rest of the time chatting with my partner and playing Pokemon but we didn't do much to celebrate because he has it really hard time this time of year)

Idk how but I've found myself wanting to redesign my gemsona for like the 500th time- , well more like completely rehaul her, since I wanna change the gem too (since Quartzes are only fighters . From what I've seen ... as much as I like harlequin quartz-)

Monthly Gem Challenge: Sonora Sunrise

Just like last month, we’re giving you an unusual gem and challenging you to design a gemsona based on it! You can go as in-depth with your character designs as you’d like: come up with their personality and backstory, or just show what you think they’d look like. They can even be a fusion if you prefer; the choice is up to you!

This month’s gem is Sonora Sunrise (If you already have a Sonora Sunrise gemsona, you can still drop them in the MGC tag, this month is for all Sonora Sunrises, old or new!)

Gem Meaning: (Note: You can use the gem’s meaning to help you come up with ideas for your gemsona, but it’s not a requirement). The components of this gem are associated with serenity, peace, hope, and and unconditional love. Supposedly a good gem for anxiety and dealing with irrational fear.

Cool Facts: Sonora Sunrise is a fusion! This gem is a mix of Chrysocholla (the blue / green), Cuprite (the red), Chalcotricite (also red), and Iron (black). While it's popularly referred to as "Sonora Sunrise", this gem is also known as "Sonora Sunset" and "Crimson Cuprite". It’s a pretty new gem that was only recently discovered within the last 50-years or so!

Please critique my gemsona! Pink Tourmaline (art by Renegademerald request by me) Gem: pink tourmaline Name: Pink Tourmaline 10-g13-1Xy Personality: she is very sweet and compassionate, but due to her defective form and cloudy gemstone (more easily poofed) she has lots of insecurities and low self esteem. She is addicted to fusion because it makes her feel stronger, so she will manipulate her friends and even enemies into fusing with her. Due to her addiction to fusion she has been stuck in a few malachite like fusions because she wasn’t willing to unfuse and give up power.

Story: after forming defective on Homeworld (during era 1), her manager decided that she would be shattered and harvested. She poofed her with a single punch. In the distance a squadron of clear quartz soldiers watched as pink tourmaline was poofed. Clear quartz 9sl felt bad for her and brashley decided to help her. She unpoofed her before she would be harvested and after being captured, stole a ship and landed on the not yet colony of earth. There they met up with sandstone, jade, and mystic topaz and had many interesting adventures together.

Critique:

I really like this because she’s flawed but well flawed, you could maybe add her (previous) court and weapon (even tho we can see it), pronouns, job ect. I wouldn’t change much it’s pretty good. I love her side shave that looks like ice cream 😂
