Gemology—the scientific study of gemstones
Common Gemstone Shapes:
Tumblr media
Negative crystal - A crystal-shaped cavity within a crystalline gemstone. The cavity usually shows a combination of forms which occur in the host crystal and may contain liquid, gas or solid.
Ornamental stones - Minerals and rocks which normally lack transparency and are valued for their colour and pattern e.g. turquoise, lapis lazuli, malachite, agate. Although they have beauty, not all of them are rare or possess durability.
Scintillation - The multiple and alternating reflections or twinkling of light from the facets of a polished gemstone when there is relative movement between the observer and the light source or gemstone.
Sheen - A special visual phenomena observed in gem materials due to reflection of light from the internal structure of the stone.
Skull melting - A technique used to synthesise cubic zirconia. Zirconia powder is contained within a skull of water cooled fingers, then heated by radio frequency radiation. The molten material confined within a crust of itself is then slowly cooled , forming columns of crystals.
Striations - Parallel markings on the surface of crystals resulting from oscillating growth between two crystal forms.
Syngenetic (inclusions) - Mineral inclusions formed at the same time as the host crystal and enclosed within it e.g. healed fractures in quartz, olivine in diamond.
Tenacity (toughness) - The ability of a mineral to absorb energy without breaking or cleaving. Terms used are brittle, sectile, malleable, flexible, elastic.
Translucent - Allows transmission of light but does not show a clear image of an object.
Transparent - Transmits a clear, undistorted image of an object. Most faceted gemstones are transparent.

Rock Crystal Flask from Ancient Rome, c.25 BCE: this stunning little flask measures just 5.7cm (2.25 in) tall, and it was carved from a solid piece of rock crystal more than 2,000 years ago
Tumblr media
Known as an amphoriskos, this miniature vessel was likely used as a vial for perfumed oils.
Tumblr media
Vessels made of rock crystal were rare and highly treasured throughout the Roman world, as the Getty Museum explains:
Due to the limited sources of the material and the labor-intensive process of making the vessels, rock crystal vessels were rare and expensive luxury items in the Roman world. A small amphoriskos such as this one probably contained expensive perfumed oils. This form of flask, with angular handles and a bottom knob, was also popular in ceramic vessels of the late first century B.C.
Tumblr media
Rock crystal was also prized for its natural beauty, resilience, and mystical significance:
Like the Greeks before them, the Romans believed that rock crystal was ice that had been hardened through intense freezing. Fittingly, such a miraculous stone was believed to have the powers of an amulet and was highly valued.
The stone's hardness made it difficult to work but also highly desirable because the finished piece possessed a glossy finish and was resistant to scratches. To hollow out the vessel, an artisan used ground emery as an abrasive. Small vessels like this multi-faceted amphoriskos took advantage of the natural elongated, hexagonal structure of the quartz mineral.

The name of the crystal is derived from the word “methustos” meaning intoxicated. The prefix “a-” meaning “not”, translates the word to “not intoxicated” or “not drunk”. The ancients used to carry the stone in hopes it will stop them from becoming drunk or that it would cure their drunkenness. This belief probably stemmed from the myth of the titan Rhea giving an amethyst to the god of wine and madness Dionysus to protect him.

Dr.Ratio: "I'm not going to betray my dear friend Gambler, actually we work together to dupe you into thinking that green rock in his bag is actually aventurine and not jade. When I bring him to you please give him the bag, it contains the pieces of actual aventurine, he'll need it." Sunday: "Yep, got it! You want to betray Aventurine because you hate him, and this green rock is aventurine, and I'll give him his bag to mock him because there's nothing valuable in it. Ok thanks bye!"
That's how that "betrayal" scene went, right? He just tells the truth, allowing Sunday to delude himself.
When Sunday asks whether Ratio is prepared to betray Aven for knowledge, he answers that there are things more important for him than knowledge. So it's basically a longer way to say "no".
"…you ought to realize that a competent scholar knows their position and wouldn't forsake more vital matters for the sake of petty pride."
Sunday ignores this and proceeds. Then Ratio directly tells him that aventurine is in the bag.
"...that Cornerstone has been in your hands from the very beginning"
Sunday finds jade, convinced that it's aventurine.
Then Ratio just tells Sunday what Aventurine is going to do, because at this point why not? Sunday is clearly living in his own world, and he only hears what he wants to hear.
"Then he makes up some trivial excuse, downplaying the matter, and requests the gift money. This is a gamble, one he's all too familiar with, betting on your single misstep leading to a total loss."
And Sunday is like, yeah, whatever.

it's also going to house an animal crossing-esque museum for all collectables the tiny town residents find :)

Some Gemology Vocabulary
for your next poem/story (pt. 1)
Gemology—the scientific study of gemstones
Tumblr media
Acicular - crystals that have a "needle-like" form
Adamantine - the highest classification of surface lustre or reflectivity which may be shown by a gemstone (e.g. in faceted diamond)
Adularescence - a billowing flow of whitish or bluish colors that seem to float along the surface
Allochromatic - a gemstone is allochromatic when it is colorless in its pure state
Aventurescence - specular reflections or spangles of light reflected from plate-like inclusions as a stone is rotated
Baroque - gem materials having an irregular shape e.g. baroque pearls
Botryoidal - interlocking, rounded masses that sometimes look like grapes or bubbles resulting from radiating masses of fibrous crystals
Carat - a unit of weight for gemstones. There are five metric carats to the gram.
Chatoyancy - the cat’s-eye-like phenomenon caused by light reflecting from tiny fiber-like inclusions within a gem. The "eye" is seen at right angles to the direction of the inclusions. Stones must be cut en cabochon to see this effect.
Fluorescence - the emission of visible light by a gemstone when exposed to a light source whose light we normally cannot see
Idiochromatic - a gemstone is idiochromatic when the element causing its color is an essential part its chemical composition. For example, iron, which is an intrinsic part of the chemical makeup of peridot, is the cause of its green color.
Lapidary - the art of working with stone and gems which includes engraving, cutting, and polishing
Opalescence - a reflection of a milky or pearly light from a gem's interior, sometimes used as a synonym for iridescence.
Orange peel - a surface appearance resembling the outer skin of an orange. This is sometimes seen in plastic and glass simulants and should be observed in reflected light.
Phantom crystal - also known as "ghost crystal", they occur in quartz when there is an interruption in the growth cycle. It appears like a faint crystal within a crystal.

So, according to the Vulgate writers, fairies are just any and all magic-using women, and that their magic works through the power of:
Drugs
Jewelry
And saying funny words
In other words, two fields of women-friendly skills and the superstitious/mystical belief in "Words have Power" principle, chanting incantations and using the name of a spirit. (E.I. "Speak of the Devil and he shall appear")
Also, Merlin being referred to as a god, similar to Morgan.
