Today's Specimen: Ametrine

Ametrine is a variety of quartz with areas of natural purple and yellow/orange colouration. It's name comes from the colours it produces, resembling both amethyst and citrine. Ametrine deposits can be found in Bolivia, Brazil, and India, with the majority coming from a single mine in Bolivia. It is ranked at about a 7.0 on the Mohs hardness scale. Alternate names for ametrine include: Bolivianite, Golden Amethyst, and Trystine.

ROCK OF THE DAY 4:

Ethiopian Opal

Super excited about this one, I've wanted it for years and finally bought some. It's just so magical. Lab made opal is also beautiful but it just can't compare to the perfect natural impurities of Earth made opal.

Anywho

Opal is a collection of tini tiny silica spheres, and is formed when cracks in sandstone are filled with silica rich groundwater. Its slowly forms a gel, and then the stone we know and love. It takes about 5 to 6 million years for opal to form in these cracks.

This stone is said to bring balence to the mind and emotions, it is also said to bring insight and clarity, and aids in communication with other realms.

Today's Specimen: Painite

Painite is considered to be the world's rarest gemstone, with only a few deposits discovered to this day. Painite was first discovered in Myanmar in 1958. To this day, we are still unsure about exactly how and why painite is formed. Painite can be found in reddish-brown to dark brown colours, occasionally with a hint of orange. These crystals have a hexagonal structure, making it relatively distinctive from other gemstones. Painite is measured at about an 8.0 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it a good choice for jewelry makers, if they can get their hands on it. While it could be easily cut and used for jewelry, almost every piece that has been mined has been kept by museums to display its rarity and unique characteristics. One carat of painite would cost about $60,000 USD.

"The Hissing Wastes is the WORST" the Hissing Wastes is great if you bring Blackwall because he proceeds to tell you about the time he got lost in a desert storm, he and his men got drunk and high, and then they woke up naked and had to fight a bunch of ghasts. Most riveting story in the entire game. Solas and Varric wish they had stories to tell like this.
