“This is without a doubt the stupidest plan you’ve ever had. Of course I’m in.”

Leia looks at her friend, dumbfounded by the elaborate plan to get some beers for the party that night. “This is without a doubt the stupidest plan you’ve ever had. Of course I’m in.”

Gwen grins widely, laughing. She stands up and gets a large piece of paper from the back of the basement. She starts mapping out the plan, Leia watching in confused wonder.

It would be so much easier to sneak into the kitchen when Grandma and Grandpa were out of the house, but where’s the fun in that? It’s not a thrill, a rush, if it isn’t dangerous.

While Gwen explains the plan, the rest of the motley crew arrive, and get in on it. The plan is so complex there is no way they’re going to be able to follow it.

Finally, Nikki speaks up, “why don’t you just get the beers when your grandparents aren’t home?”

They all look at her like she has lobsters coming from her ears before turning back to the plan.

”Never had a friend like you.” Leia nudges Gwen with a smile. Gwen smiled back, “I know.” She nudged back.

Leia looked into Gwen’s eyes, admiring the beautiful hazel. She had never seen anything like them. She began to think back to when they first met. When Gwen caught her watching. Leia was so nervous and gittery about what to say. She had only ever been like that whenever she had a crush on a boy.

Gwen tried to catch her breath, feeling Leia’s gaze. Leia’s brown eyes, they were so gorgeous. All these years, she was looking for her partner in crime. The yin to her yang, and now Gwen found it. And all only in a matter of a few days.

Their faces inched closer, lips gently touching. Gwen caressed Leia’s cheeks, pushing her onto the car. She wanted more. No, she needed

2014

"Did you talk to Mom?" TK asks when Owen comes back into the room.

"Couple times". Owen exhaled slowly. "First was right after I realized your sister wasn't here, and I just left her a message to let her know that she was back here. And that I'm boarding up that damn window". He cast a pointed look at his daughter, who was on the couch, playing with the frayed ends of her short denim skirt.

"What?" Sophie said, looking up finally. "Dad, you told me to go to my room and I did. But there was no time frame given for how long you wanted me to stay there". TK bit the inside of his cheek to keep from audibly laughing. He knew it wouldn't help.

Owen pinched the bridge of his nose with one hand and pointed down the hall with the other. "Sophie. Room. Go. This time, stay in there. We'll talk about this more tomorrow".

"Fine". Sophie sprung off the couch and stalked down the hall without looking at her dad or her brother. They sat in silence as the door slammed down the hall.

"I didn't say thank you yet, did I?" Owen murmured.

"It's okay, Dad". TK said with a shrug. "Lot going on".

"Still". his dad reached over and squeezed his shoulder gently. "Thank you for dragging her back here. I know you're sacrificing your big brother cred," his dad added with a tired smile, "and I appreciate it".

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure she hates me now". TK joked.

"Not as much as she hates me right now, kid," his dad said with a mirthless chuckle. "And I know you had... other plans tonight".

TK shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He knew what his dad was getting at.

"It was one meeting, Dad," TK said. "I can go to another one tomorrow".

"I don't want you to miss those, son," Owen said quietly.

"I know". TK sighed. "But I've still got my 54 days. I'm fine. Promise". His dad looked at him with raised eyebrows but didn't respond further. He looked around; partly because he desperately wanted to get the conversation off himself, but also because he was surprised they hadn't been interrupted. But it appeared that the two of them and his sister were the only ones home. And the kitchen was looking a lot more like his dad and a lot less cluttered.

"Hey, um, Dad?" TK said.

"Hey, um, TK?" Owen said in response.

"Where's Lorraine?" TK asked. He watched his dad's expression change.

"She's..." his dad started to speak and his voice trailed off. He started over. "She's not exactly staying here. Tonight. We're taking... some time".
