The more I hear about cryptids, the more I admire the audacity of the Gef the Talking Mongoose story. No fleeting glimpses, no possibly that it's a bear. This is an annoying little beast who won't shut up. We reached a truce where we wouldn't try to kill him and he would let us know if we left the stove on. He said his name was Jeff but he spelled it Gef because mongooses can't spell. Now that's a cryptid.

I actually care so much about gef the talking mongoose and how he was a ghost trapped in an English farmhouse whose favorite hobbies were talking shit about locals and scaring mice

And how he would go to the market with the family he lived with (whose daughter had the really quirky fun hobby of ventriloquism) but no one would see him because he had the really fun habit of walking in the bushes to the side of the path when they went places because he's shy

And how like he was a mongoose but had really wiry bushy hair that looked like a long haired dog's fur but definitely wasn't because the family had a long haired dog with hair the same exact color as his and they were like "no, it is a little different if you look, because he's a ghost mongoose and that's a dog so"

And how like you could hear him scurrying all throughout the house because they had these really cool double walls that you could speak into from another room and make it sound like you were somewhere else.

Supposedly someone shot him and like showed everyone a stuffed mongoose as proof, but gef wasn't a LIVING mongoose, but rather a ghost stuck in mongoose form so, you know
