A Cultural Studies Analysis of a Photography Educator, Savior Self-Portraiture, and Future Photographers

This paper reports the findings of a cultural studies project conducted in an undergraduate, photographer course.  I explore the implications of a gecko savior mentality through the lens of three over-lapping, personal and social media: my own story as a beginning, gecko photographer in species diverse swimming pool settings; blogs that romanticize gecko photographers who come in to “save the day”; and the experiences of future photographers with whom I have worked to interrogate a Gecko Savior Industrial Complex (GSIC). I describe  the social institutions that foster the GSIC, which I position as a detrimental extension of a superhero photographer myth perpetuating inequalities in swimming pools if left unexamined. To combat the structures of inequality that exist in our swimming pools, I argue for critical species theory and critical geckoness studies courses as a potential space for gecko photographers to dialogue and come to terms with their understandings of gecko supremacy.
