The 2024 Gender Census is now open!
[ Link to survey ]
The 11th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th June 2024.
It’s short and easy, about 5 minutes probably.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers whod be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful - it’s what helped us get 40,000 responses last year.
Survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
The 2024 survey is now closed!
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
For the curious, you can also spy on some graphs and demographic data for the incoming responses here.
Thank you so much!

Here's an exciting graph, to show that I am working on this year's Gender Census report. :D
This one shows that they/them popularity is moving at the speed of time - the popularity curve among age groups moves by about one year per year. This suggests that liking they/them is a sticky trend connected to age.
But also, older age groups are warming to it ahead of schedule - the appeal is spreading oldwards, but apparently not youngwards.
I am… not a statistician, linguist or sociologist of any kind, and I apologise to everyone for my extremely weird explanation.
Edit: By popular request of one person (@ophrys-apifera), a slightly different arrangement:

After reconfiguring my life this week purely to focus on the Gender Census report, I'm happy to say I've done most of the spreadsheetery and about half of the report itself. I'm going to keep going over the weekend, as well.
I am very relieved! I don't like leaving a big gap between the end of the survey and the report coming out. I like to work on it while it's all fresh in my mind.

I'm curious if you noticed a drop in people entering multi-set entries this year. (Ie. entering a set that goes 'star/void/stars/voids/starself' instead of one for 'star' and one for 'void'.) That's the first thought I had when I saw the unwieldy question of doom - 'maybe this will reduce people's need to enter pre-alternating pronoun sets.' (I'm not sure it's because people were entering fewer overall, or your questions are improving, but the pronoun data looks a bit cleaner this year.)
I'm curious if you noticed a drop in people entering multi-set entries this year. (Ie. entering a set that goes 'star/void/stars/voids/starself' instead of one for 'star' and one for 'void'.)
Unfortunately, there's no way for me to automate looking for those, and it's way too much for me to sort through manually, so I do not know! I am sorry about that.
That's the first thought I had when I saw the unwieldy question of doom - 'maybe this will reduce people's need to enter pre-alternating pronoun sets.'
Very interesting thought!

I didn't change the pronoun questions themselves at all this year, so I cannot take the credit - good work everyone! :D

We're almost at the end of it but I thought I'd do a sneaky lil day 10 update on the progress of the census based on the progress spreadsheet Cassian puts up!
The country stats are looking quite impressive! Unfortunately, the US is still representing over half of the survey participants. It's difficult to get the survey as noticed in other places and some of us are not doing very crash hot in the percentage of population either. (*Cough* Aus coming up the end of English-Speaking and the gap between them and the UK *cough*)
NZ/Aotearoa has reached the goal I had in mind, overtaking Prefer not to say by a comfortable margin.
Aus still sits about 300 less than Germany. I'm starting to leave flyers places and encouraging friends again to share around. So hoping that helps give us a boost.
Over 30s are now at 19.2%! Which is really cool to see that number rise. I'm trying to figure out more places to share with a large portion of that age range but as someone in their early twenties, I'm often out of the range for a lot of those social groups.
I'm really excited about how many participants overall the survey has. It's predicted to be one of the biggest yet! Which is really cool.

Alright everyone. I will appreciate every Oceania participant, no matter how many we get. But I'm hoping number wise, Aus can beat out Germany, and Aotearoa (NZ) can beat out those who preferred not to say. All other Oceania countries, the aim is over 10 participants so you can get in my data for the first time!!! (Because I don't have access to the og survey data, I can only count non-anonymised countries).
Want to know what I'm talking about? Check out my pinned post.

The usual week of Gender Census spam is about to begin!

Any posts with additional commentary etc. won't have that tag.

Monday 17th June (just!) 2024 - day 36
I've just closed the survey for this year! It's showing 48,648 participants, but I haven't quite finished checking everything over, so that number may drop a little bit.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part and shared the link! It's been a record-breaking year with many pleasing graphs, including:
PARTICIPATION
TUMBLR FOLLOWERSHIP
MAILING LIST SUBSCRIBERS
Also I've barely done anything on the Instagram account, I only set it up halfway through this year's survey, and it has over 70 followers (feels like a lot for me on Insta??). I made the Bluesky account just before the survey opened and it has 171 followers - not bad?
The Tumblr post got over 14,000 reblogs, the Facebook post got 925 shares, the Mastodon post got 930 reposts, and the Bluesky post got 560... reskeets. 🤔
All in all, we're doing numbers, we did numbers, numbers have been done. Hell yes. 👌
Stay tuned. I'm playing with the results already, but there's a lot to do - I have to migrate the website (and the mailing list 😭) to a new account on the same host because the host is silly, and also maybe open an online shop for the zines, and then finish the results spreadsheet and maybe come up with a new/improved checkbox list generation method, and then write it up. And also somewhere in amongst that, work out how much money I owe Andréa and then pay her!

Monday 10th June 2024 - 3 days left
It's up to about 47,300 so far (that's so many people!!):
It's slowed down a lot because I've just taken a few days off from promotion basically. Since we beat the all-time record I figured that PR might not be so urgent! Still, it's only slowed down to about 8 per hour (one response every 7.5 minutes), which is pretty great.
On the closing day I'll actually be travelling for a few days, so (as is traditional) the survey may stay open a little bit longer than planned. If you're impatient, you can distract yourself with this totally unrelated survey about plants, buy a pronoun zine (postage will be delayed until I get home at the weekend), or donate to this UK legal crowdfunder towards challenging the government ban on puberty blockers.
Tumblr is still the most likely source of participants by about a million miles (41% of participants), ditto USA. Participants over 30 years old is still higher than usual at 21%. So, if you know any LGBTQ+ people who fit any of the following criteria, please do send the survey link to them!
Over 25 years old
Not white
Not from the USA

Tuesday 4th June 2024 - 8 days remaining
We're half a millimetre from 46,000 responses! Here's how we're looking:
I'm not super confident we'll get to 50,000 but I think we might get pretty close.
In other positive news, the proportion of participants who are 31 or older keeps sneaking up, it's at 21.3% now. And the USA are still over half of participants. So, basically, keep sharing with queers over 25 in a variety of locations!
Just in case you wish to share or you've not taken it yet yourself, it takes 5-10 minutes and the URL is https://survey.gendercensus.com.
And in tangentially related news, the pronoun zines are selling well, over 70 have been posted so far. If you ordered one before the weekend you should have your "parcel shipped" notice from PayPal, and I'll bet a lot of you have already received the zine. (Give me a shout if anything seems amiss: [email protected])
Thanks everyone for your support! :)
