I needed something for thoughts that are too long for Twitter or Facebook, but don't make up a full blog post. Fortunately, that's what Tumblr is for.

Most ecosystems with a generous supply of termites have a fairly large creature with powerful forelimbs bearing heavy claws. Numbats are not large, and they have five toes on the fore feet, and four on the hind feet.
So I am reading up on this delightful cresature and you are correct Wikipedia, Numbats are NOT large and I LOVE THEM
Uniquely among terrestrial mammals, an additional cheek tooth is located between the premolars and molars; whether this represents a supernumerary molar tooth or a deciduous tooth retained into adult life is unclear. As a result, although not all individuals have the same dental formula, in general, it follows the unique pattern: 4.1.3.1.4/3.1.4.1.4
These little snufflers regularly have an uneven number of molars on the lower jaw! How delightfully weird!!
Y’all got any of them numbats for #creaturecomfortqueue?
I wish I did! I'm only using my own photos this time since it'll be on the art reference blog, and sadly I have never seen a numbat in person.
If folk have numbat photos (ideally your own, or credited to the photographer) they could add them to this thread, though!

Ha! In a way I love this confusion, because it makes sense: the sign *does* reference a satellite orbiting a celestial body, but the satellite in question is Earth (around the sun) :) Many ASL signs are indeed gestural like that!
It also bums me out a bit because YEAR is one of the first signs you learn and is very recognizable, so if more folks knew just a little sign they'd recognize it! But, you can fix that! Handspeak (above) is an excellent resource, and here are some others I like:
LifePrint for learning - they have a TON of free resources, including a self-guided lesson plan with a TON of video lessons. It's good enough that it's literally what my community college classes (run by Deaf professors of course!) used as their curriculum.
Lingvano - DuoLingo-style app, built and used/recommended to me by the Deaf community, full of good sign videos to get you up to speed, and even an overenthusiastic hand mascot to make the experience feel truly DuoLingo-like. Paid beyond the intro course, but well worth it!
Queer ASL, if you're looking for something more interactive - signing *with* other people is super helpful, just as with any other language! Classes availble anywhere via Zoom (in-person are in the works), solid instructors and curriculum. I have done...five? classes with them and learned a TON. It's a proper class so not cheap, but they have a sliding-scale and scholarship options depending on your means, and all the instructors are Deaf *and* queer!
Check your local community college! They often have ASL classes available to the public in their Community Ed department, sometimes even online! I took my first two courses from PCC with Prof. Worthylake and he was great.
Whatever you choose, make sure your teachers or resources are in the Deaf community - the One Big Rule is, don't go paying hearing people to teach you ASL. A good ASL 101 class is as much Deaf history/culture as it is language. Any reputable community college should have Deaf professors, but I don't know what's going on in every corner of the world.
Also! If you want more ASL in really good comics (albeit less indie/scifi), check out Matt Fraction's run of Hawkeye - it leans into Hawkeye's background and hearing loss, and uses ASL in really interesting ways that really lean into the medium of comics, and add layers if you know a little sign. Very cool.
Omg is that circle motion the sign for skyhook??? I love it 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 it's just like them
EVERYONE THINKS THIS BUT It MEANS YEAR
Tumblr media
I've made up very very few signs for RttS, and the in-universe ASL for sky hook is probably just a compound word of SKY and HOOK like the English term

hello tumblrheads. with the ongoing shitshow i remembered im the spokesperson for this tumblr alternative so,
Tumblr media
WAFRN.NET, a tumblr-style, queer-safe, alternative
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pictured: wafrn users in their natural habitat
wafrn is a fediverse-based* social media consisting of majorly of queer people, it has an active userbase, a ton of them doing fuck-all and having fun :]
perks!
It has custom css! You can customize your profile with pretty much anything and make themes for you dashboard, example below :)
Tumblr media
It connects to Mastodon, Pleroma, Firefish, Misskey and such, so you can connect with over 100k other people on remote servers!
We're even working on an independent wiki! That means we'll have a comprehensive wiki with notable user-generated moments and events and it wont be hosted on fandom!
It's indie, no corporations attached.
Its open source! You can open it right up and look through the code :)
Predominantly Leftist: Bigots and bootlickers are banned the moment they make themselves known, and the staff [that includes me] actively interacts with the userbase.
*the fediverse is this interconnected chain of servers operating on the same network [that being ActivityPub], allowing people on entirely different websites to connect with eachother, basically.

You are inconsistent. You do not need to have a grand unified theory about what to do about Michael Jackson. You are a hypocrite, over and over. You love Annie Hall but you can barely stand to look at a painting by Picasso. You are not responsible for solving this unreconciled contradiction. In fact, you will solve nothing by means of your consumption; the idea that you can is a dead end. The way you consume art doesn't make you a bad person, or a good one. You'll have to find some other way to accomplish that.

I'm so fascinated by languages with different levels of formality built in because it immediately introduces such complex social dynamics. The social distance between people is palpable when it's built right into the language, in a way it's not really palpable in English.
So for example. I speak Spanish, and i was taught to address everyone formally unless specifically invited otherwise. People explained to me that "usted" was formal, for use with strangers, bosses, and other people you respect or are distant from, while "tú" is used most often between family and good friends.
That's pretty straightforward, but it gets interesting when you see people using "tú" as a form of address for flirting with strangers, or for picking a fight or intimidating someone. In other languages I've sometimes heard people switch to formal address with partners, friends or family to show when they are upset. That's just so interesting! You're indicating social and emotional space and hierarchy just in the words you choose to address the other person as "you"!!
Not to mention the "what form of address should I use for you...?" conversation which, idk how other people feel about it, but to me it always felt awkward as heck, like a DTR but with someone you're only just becoming comfortable with. "You can use tú with me" always felt... Weirdly intimate? Like, i am comfortable around you, i consider you a friend. Like what a vulnerable thing to say to a person. (That's probably also just a function of how i was strictly told to use formal address when i was learning. Maybe others don't feel so weird about it?)
And if you aren't going to have a conversation about it and you're just going to switch, how do you know when? If you switch too soon it might feel overly familiar and pushy but if you don't switch soon enough you might seem cold??? It's so interesting.
Anyway. As an English-speaking American (even if i can speak a bit of Spanish), i feel like i just don't have a sense for social distance and hierarchy, really, simply because there isn't really language for it in my mother tongue. The fact that others can be keenly aware of that all the time just because they have words to describe it blows my mind!

I frigging love these kinds of things, it shows how much of a damn mess English spelling is! Both "jorj" and "chriego" are arguably more reasonable ways to spell what is actually coming out of our mouths than "george" and "triangle"! The unexpectedness is amusing but "correct" spelling is not about intelligence, it's about experience and familiarity, and those are totally different things!!
This is the inverse of when you pick up vocab from reading and have a non-canonical pronunciation un your head for years, and it is just as reasonable and delightful!

So like I haven't done enough childcare to know how universal this is or if his parents are just doing something right and this is probably not an original observation but dang, there's no better hypeman for your drawing skills than my 5½-year-old nanny kid.
Like, he wanted to draw so I asked if I could too and drew a thoroughly mediocre train. The moment I started putting little dots for the bolts in the first half-assed circle, this kid's eyes go wide and he says "WOW!! THAT LOOKS SO GOOOOOD!!!", and then I do the most basic lazy swirls of the weird slab-crayons for the smoke and he's all "WOW I LOVE THAT" "YOU'RE GIVING ME IDEAS FOR MY DRAWINGS", and I do more of the same swirls in a pile for the coal in the coal car and it's all "THAT LOOKS A-MA-ZING!" "HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW TO DRAW SO GOOD"
And like, really, it is such a lovely glimpse into how we could be hyping each other up, a lesson in appreciating art. Like, yeah my train was elementary in every sense of the word, but this kid is in kindergarten, so to him it was mindblowing, inspiring, true genius. And like! When our friends and compatriots are making art, as adults we know what "good" and "skilled" art looks like and we compare it to that. And I know we've all talked about this already but I just wanted to take the reminder that especially when someone is doing art that I have no skills in, and they're doing an "objectively" middling job that is still leagues ahead of what I would do...I want to mirror this kid's energy and be like, damn, that is kickass! And even when it's something I am good at, like, we're all better than we were, and it is impressive every step of the way! And at the end of the day, in this global attention economy where everyone sees the best of the best, you get the socially-selected cut from all the art the world has to offer...we're all kindergartners, and that's rad. This is my reminder to myself to soak in the joy of it more :)

okay is she being actually immature or is it just a woman over 30 expressing a human experience you find to be immature.
like yeah. at certain ages... let shit go. im not defending the real immature shit. im not defending the karen you're picturing. i worked in retail i hate those people too. (once somebody got mad at me because she didn't like how our winter window decor was a snowman smoking a pipe. i wish i was joking).
but men at 57 will write books about how 17 year old girls are soooo sexy. they will invent worlds where women have to be naked for "armor reasons." they will write songs that treat women as objects. people rush to defend them. meanwhile a woman at 35 will be like "heartbreak is hard, actually" or "i feel betrayed by a friend" or "i am struggling with something emotionally." immediately people will say stuff like this woman is 35 by the way. by the way this woman is SO OLD to be experiencing this. BY THE WAY.
im 31, almost 32. the other day a poet was blasted online because at her "big age", she had written a poem about feeling unloved. top comment was "this woman is 29 by the way." this woman is too old to still be useful, by the way. she has to behave better . maybe if she was a good wife and mother she could stop existing loudly, and the story could continue on without her. this woman has served her purpose, by the way. she's so cringe, by the way. at 29 - so old! - she still hasn't figured out that her existence should be one of shame.

I haven't purchased a HP item in close to a decade - I use the books I already had as doorstops or to prop a laptop up for meetings nowadays.
There is NO "death of the author" with JK Rowling - she controls and continues to profit from her IP, and uses that money to fund hate groups.

Sometimes, ya just gotta make do with what you have
Tumblr media
I decided I wanted to give bobbin lace a try but didn't want to invest a ton of money in case I didn't like it so here has been my solution. I've drawn all the patterns by hand on regular notebook paper, and am pinning into my laptop case. The only money I've spent was on one pack of pencils for $1 (which I'll use anyway), an enormous spool of yarn $5 (bought at a thrift shop), and one pack of pins $6 (which I'll also use anyway).
I'm enjoying it so far, but still undecided if I want to spend more money on it. Real bobbins and a pillow would be soooo helpful though. But its been encouraging how much I've been able to learn already with just these materials!
