I needed something for thoughts that are too long for Twitter or Facebook, but don't make up a full blog post. Fortunately, that's what Tumblr is for.

Reading rahaeli's bsky feed is an education in itself. I did not realize it was so common for undercover agents to join even harmless social activism groups and try to encourage people to do things they could be arrested for. The song has about a dozen verses, all of them based on incidents that resulted in felony charges o.O
The whole thread is very worth reading, especially since the incoming administration has been been very clear that they want to criminalize being trans or supporting trans rights. (Among other things.)

Also I just read the Wikipedia page for the original song - it's delightful, and apparently I spent more time recording my video than José spent recording the original:
The song was recorded in ten minutes at RCA Studios on Sunset Boulevard with producer Rick Jarrard. "That's why it's the simplest song ever written. Nineteen words to it", Feliciano told The New Yorker. "I wanted a song that belonged to the masses. If you know where your song is going to go, you don't have to fuck around with it too much. I used to say to myself, 'Joke 'em if they can't take a fuck!'"
And apparently in 2017 he did a ska version with English musician Jools Holland, which is also full of joy:

If it's not already been done ...
Someone should make a Spanish language version of the American song "Feliz Navidad" but it's language swapped. It would be called "Happy Christmas."
🎶Happy Christ-a-mas.
Happy Christ-a-mas.
Happy Christ-a-mas, prosperous year with happiness.
Quiero desearte una feliz navidad
Quiero desearte una feliz navidad
Quiero desearte una feliz navidad,
Desde el fondo de mi corazón. 🎶

This silly idea made me laugh enough that after figuring out how to (sort of) fit it in the meter, I decided I should go ahead and ensure it exists in the world in some form, even though my guitar playing and my Spanish are both passable at best. So here's to putting a little joy in the world with scrappy art! Happy Christ-a-mas everyone!

Posting a whole comic! Mending a Rift, 2022. 34 pages. Sort of sci-fi, sort of fantasy, maybe a little grim, very much slice-of-life.
A digital PDF of this comic is available in my web shop.

I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.
I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.
Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.
I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.
I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.
Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.
I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.
My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.
I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?
No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!
#yep yep yep#enshittification#hate hate hate#late stage capitalism can die in a fire#you can pry my MP3 library and DVD collection from my cold dead hands#I just ordered what I'm pretty sure is literally the only US-compatible smartphone with user-replaceable parts and easily swappable battery#and I had to import it from the UK#garbage world#user consent#this is what the free software movement is about#unfortunately it's led by shitbird libertarian white dude zealots#but even without that it will always be fighting an uphill battle under capitalism#ughhhhhhhhh#I was just talking about this the other day#about how “just use Linux” is not the answer because people do want their computers to...work#and not everyone has the time or resources to pay the cost of using the thing that is shunned by capitalism#using the software that works best for you does not make you complicit in the erosion of software freedom#no ethical software usage under capitalism or sth

So, bonus fact about color temperature: it used to seem weird to me that we talk about color in terms of temperature. Seemed like something a marketing department cooked up, except that the lower temperatures are "warm" and the higher ones are "cool" - what gives??
What gives is that as it happens, it's not really that color has a temperature, but rather the other way around: temperature has a color! This is a phenomenon called black-body radiation, which is basically, if you heat something up, eventually it will start glowing just from the heat. We see this in really hot things on earth: this is the main reason lava is red/orange/yellow, for example! We also see it in metalsmithing - when you stick a sword or whatever into the furnace, it glows red, or if it's really hot, yellow or nearly white.
Now, the charts above aren't super accurate, so for reference, here's Wikipedia's chart of color temperature:
Which is important because the key is, this holds for stars too! Our sun's effective temperature is 5772K, and the "color temperature" of daylight outside the atmosphere is approximately 5900K, which is juuust on the red ("warm") side of white. Color and perception of color is complicated, and things like atmospheric scattering affect what gets to us on the ground, but the takeaway is that daylight is pretty close to white.
Why we think of red as "warmer" light is wading into the realm of human psychology, but I imagine a big part is that historically our artificial lights - from campfires to candles up to incandescent bulbs - could only get so hot, so their color temperatures were on the low half of the scale: 1000-2000K for a candle, 2700K for incandescent bulbs, and 3000-4000K for fluorescent. We're used to our warm cozy indoors being lit with a color temperature around 3000K or below. Even fluorescent lighting, while still technically on the "warm" side, is bluer than that, and we associate it with cold, clinical settings like offices. I'm sure there are color theorists who have all kinds of opinions here too. And because it's all subjective, people have different preferences for different temperatures in different contexts, and this post is great because it helps you figure out what yours are, and have names/numbers for them!
But anyway, in short: these temperatures aren't just made up - if you heat a thing up to a given temperature, it will glow at roughly the color associated with it! The reason we associate the lower temperatures with warmth is mainly that the only things that get hot enough to glow blue purely from their temperature are stars, so all the hot glowy things on earth are on the red side of things - even our sun is a little yellow.
(Candles and bunsen burners do have a blue flame, but that's unrelated to black-body radiation, and they are much cooler than 6000K. Similarly, the color of heated metal doesn't exactly correspond to black-body radiation because metal is not an idealized body that absorbs all energy [aka a "black body"], but it's pretty close. Color is complicated!)
There are so many different shades of white light bulbs, I am so overwhelmed walking down the light bulb aisle, and then I'm never happy with the one I choose, no matter which one I choose, I get it home and I put it in and I'm like, ugh, I don't like THAT white
#color temperature#lighting#I have simplified some things don't yell at me#but I think I got the important bits
