Small update on expanded sky: working on a new version again. Apparently the patch that makes saves work on certain emulators also breaks them for a couple more (it was in the description - I just didn't think before adding it lol), so I'm currently working on re-importing everything from expanded sky piece by piece into a clean copy of eos without that patch.
Once that's done, I'll be using that as a base for all future versions, and branching off that with a version with the save patch for those who need it. I've discovered a couple small errors in the data for now that'll be fixed when 1.3.0 drops, but for now:
Decidueye's sprites aren't being used currently, and are instead using dartrix's. I'd recommend avoiding evolving your dartrix for now to avoid disappointment.
Servine and litten have... No abilities? That's getting fixed.
Speaking of which, Servine isn't part of any IQ group either. I think these two issues might be specific to the male versions though, and since the hero options are female this might be mostly okay for now.
Using the wrong sprite id for sobble and Fuecoco, but that's nothing visible and won't affect gameplay. I'll update that for my own peace of mind though.
Even while first setting up 1.0.0 I debated allowing evolution for pokemon that are only missing their mid stages (litten + froakie). Someone else has come to me with the same thought, so I'm now considering doing that when I can. (So litten->incineroar, skipping torracat)
In the same vein, someone mentioned the additional portraits and animations for evolved pokemon. I'm already using all the portraits and animations that exist in the sprite repository for new pokemon, but I've yet to go back and do the same for pokemon that were already part of the vanilla game. Considering doing this as long as it won't make the artist credits too long - gotta figure out where I can actually put them if they do, y'know?
These should all be added at some point - if anyone is curious about the status of any of these changes or any new bugs or suggestions that may arise, I've made a Trello board to document what I've identified to work on. Feel free to check it out :D
#pmd expanded sky#<- not gonna go all out w tags for this one. it's just a small thing#originally wanted the version without the gbatemp patch done by Sunday but it just wasn't feasible#there's a lot to do and a lot of things i didn't notice to fix along the way lol#the credits screen may also get longer. that's gonna be a pain bc idk if i can fit any more on#but I'm sure i can figure something out

As someone who's been to forums, it's actually technically unhelpful to just bump a post for no good reason like that, but this is "[tumblr]", not gbatemp.

github cardinal sin: forking a project and changing the readme to mention the project you forked from, but also removing all explanation of what the project Actually Does
#this is especially bad in the homebrew/alt gaming scene#like someone will work on a fork of a program whose name is a pun based on a different program it's supposed to replace#which itself is a pun off of some internal bit of system code on the 3ds or whatever#and none of the aforementioned projects will explain what they do unless you track down the GBATemp thread about it

A Special Announcement~ | Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Tag Force Special Re-Translation Project!
I've been itching to get around to posting about this for a few months now, but wanted to wait until I'd worked on enough for it, but also had the idea to create an announcement trailer to go with it for added good measure--after recording and editing clips for a couple weeks and leveling the audio last night, heremst we are! (For some clips, I forgot to turn off the PPSSPP emulator's DevMenu option so that shows up in the top-left, buuut I didn't feel like re-recording those, lmao.)
Details worth reading below the cut here, but tl;dr work has been in progress for over a year in between things, work will continue to be in progress for a while, and the release will happen when everything's ready, but stay tuned, fun's getting started etc etc~
So, I'm sure most of us are familiar with the as-yet-unlocalized-by-Konami TFSP, the seventh and last entry in the Tag Force series on the PSP that came out early in ARC-V's run (featuring the first five series which was a cool first), as well as the current translations out there originally worked on by the guys at XenoTranslations (omarrrio and ScrewTheRules/ClickClaxer01 at GBATemp handling the card and story/etc translations, respectively) and how there are... some issues with what's out there. Everything from the DM story mode being loaded with YGOTAS references (no shade to YGOTAS and much respect to LK/Martin for his ongoing work on it still making me laugh sometimes, ofc) to the off-the-cuff edginess of 2014-2015-era internet culture and the problematic (in some cases, derogatory) language that permeated it--though to its credit, some parts do have some level of translation attempted, but taken as a whole, it can definitely turn people off from giving the game a try and seeing what it brings to the table (which is still a good amount despite the corners Konami cut here/there compared to prior TF games).
I actually did attempt a translation of my own back in 2015 (if you've been following me for a long time, you might remember it lol), tackling the GX story text starting with Judai's heart events, but eventually put it on the backburner as I focused more on my GX subbing work and beginning to finalize everything (which I'm still doing). Sometime in 2022, a friend over on NeoArkCradle (the "anonymous YGO fan" in the opening screen) was poring over the story text and patching it up the best he could to remove the references and inaccuracies with more coherent work, and after a while of seeing what he was working with in the Discord, I was a bit blown away by just how inaccurate much of it was--so alongside him, and using the better tools available since then (including some really awesome work from both nzxth2 [who did a proper re-translation of 5D's TF6 not too long ago and was kind enough to release his tools for it] and our coding helper Xan1242 who we eventually reached out to for some help), I decided to *cracks knuckles* get involved and help give everything a more accurate and professional translation, much like I do with my GX subs, working directly off the Japanese text and files. I've been taking cracks at everything in between the GX episodes I've been finalizing going back to at least last January (and I'd used my little hiatus after finalizing GX Season 2's subs to really get at some other stuff throughout the game), starting with re-translating DM's story text but also properly translating other aspects of the game, from the character names (using the original Japanese names, including those of the TF-exclusive characters, partly since Konami made a whole mess of them in English TF1-5), in-duel dialogue, pack descriptions, and more to images with Japanese text (such as localizing the in-duel cut-in onomatopoeia as you see in the video above, or other little images throughout) using some Photoshop skills I've picked up. And it's been a joint effort, as said NAC friend and I have been bouncing off how we'd like to see this go between us to stay on the same page and all, while also checking with other translators there for second/third opinions as needed.
Our plan is to release two versions of a translation--one which uses the OCG [translated] card names in Story Mode, in-duel, and other text but not in the game's card system (mainly to deal with story-relevant notes like Osiris vs Slifer with the Gods or things like not-Utopia Hope being symbolic between Yuma and Astral, akin to how I do my GX subs), and one which uses the TCG card names in everything (like how the official subs go about it). While we're mostly working with the Japanese game files due to how the Xeno team went about decoding everything, we'll be using the card-system-related files from the fixed ISO provided by FLSGaming which fixed some issues that had been present there. And Xan has helped us with a plugin that will be used to apply our translations to the system files that were hard to edit otherwise (things like the character and recipe names, as well as the pack names pulled from for the Card Description screen), but more on how that'll work once this is ready for release, lol. At some point, I'd like to also look at HDifying textures and things, but that's definitely a bonus-level thing for after the main work here is done.
SO.
Currently, Story-Mode-wise, I've gone through everything up to Yusei's events--so Dark Yugi/Kaiba/Jounouchi/Ishizu/Mai in DM, Judai/Manjoume/Asuka/Misawa/Ryou in GX, and Yusei in 5D's have been fully retranslated, though I took initial cracks at Yuma and Yuya's events to get content for this video lol (I've also been intentionally holding off on as much ZEXAL as I can until I've properly watched the whole show so I have context). I haven't tackled overworld text yet, though (like pre-duel or the tournament-related text, which is all in the same file as all the story text). I've also been handling the in-duel dialogue as I go through the character stories, so also just up to Yusei, though I did take initial cracks at Aki's, Yuma and Shark's, and Yuya and Yuzu's for the video.
Other things tackled that were sprinkled into the video, along with some other notes:
Pack names and descriptions have been retranslated, though the descriptions may see minor edits closer to release for a little variety between worlds given the different characters at the shop. Character recipe names were also retranslated, with Yugipedia's translations for them used as an occasional second opinion, though ones based on pack names had to be abbreviated in spots.
Menu text, from the Options to Help screens and stuff in between, has been retranslated, as have in-duel text strings (so, you'll see a full "Activate Effect" instead of "Activate" or "Switch to Attack/Defense Position" instead of "Switch to ATK/DEF Position", etc--also fixed the "BATTELE PHASE" graphic typo, and NAC friend created a new translation for the "Turn Change" graphic for accuracy since ENG TF1-5 made that into "Next Player's Turn").
Database stuff, such as the Sound Test, Tutorials, Duel Missions, etc., have been retranslated closer to the Japanese text; originally I retranslated the Tutorial text via hex editor, with compromises done on quite a bit of it due to the space limits, but as Xan recently updated a text extractor tool of theirs to more cleanly pull out and reinsert that text, I've been going through and fleshing out those translations more (on my commutes to/from work mostly, to be productive lol).
As mentioned, I've been localizing/translating Japanese-text images throughout the game as I come across them, like with the in-duel onomatopoeia that come up during cut-ins or images in the shop/duel/etc screens using Japanese text, to make sure the game is fully translated.
The series logos, used during the title sequence and in the Series Select screens, were updated with translated fan edits shared on Deviantart (which we'll credit in the final release) for DM and GX, while the 5D's-ARC-V logos were edited to enlarge the "Yu-Gi-Oh!" text on them that was pretty hard to see originally.
The game's original opening sequence starts on an anti-piracy message before going into the Konami logo and then a "From Yu-Gi-Oh!..." screen before the opening animation for each series logo--the original team decided to use the first image to vent their frustration at Konami for not localizing this game, and while that's valid (to some extent), we thought we'd use the opportunity to dedicate this project to Kazuki Takahashi for inspiring our love for YGO and the place it's had in our hearts for all these years.
We'll be updating the names of cards that had TCG releases after the original patch was worked on/updated by FLSG to those corresponding names.
Xan has been working on many UI fixes for us to apply with this, among them 3-line dialogue box text as is used in the ENG TF1-5 games--once implemented for TFSP, I'll be going over everything to make full use of that extra space where needed, so things might not look as they do in the video by then.
Character bios will be worked on after I've done the story stuff, though I've taken initial cracks at it for Yuma and Yuya's bios for the video, along with translating the location/affiliation names ("Domino High School," "Satellite," etc).
Currently no release date is planned, as I'm working on this between my GX-finalizing work and actual IRL work, though we'll see how later this year looks as more work gets done--but as noted in the video, all things being equal, it will be released when everything is ready. I'll try to post regular updates or rambles now that this announcement's been made, lol, but do try not to constantly check in on a release date. 🙏🏽
All that said, I think that covers just about everything I wanted to put out there with this, lol. It's been fun to work on this so far and getting to see what I've re-translated in-game is definitely neat; looking forward to us being able to release everything when ready.
Stay tuned for more; the fun's just getting started!

🤦 n3dsxl... ok i was reading that i needed cfw from here hshop.erista.me/3hs but i thought cfw was an APP so i dl and ran the only thing in universal updater with it in the name..... how do i unfuck the stuff i messed with o<-<
ty for helping this booboo fool ;;
you already have CFW- that just stands for custom firmware lol. if you have universal updater then you have to have CFW.
first step id recommend is downloading hshop!
click FBI and click through the menus below!
then scan the QR code on the homepage of hshop and install it!
after that, you should be able to install the system DSiware through hshop!
I don't know much about DSiware but I'd recommend joining the Nintendo homebrew discord to get real time assistance with what things you need to download.
(or if real time scares you, you can make a post on gbatemp- but it'll take longer)

the ace attorney trilogy remaster for the 3DS now has cheat codes!
if anyone saw me talking on my main blog about chatting with someone on a forum, here's what it was about! (link to the thread here if you're curious)
i got into touch with someone on GBAtemp who went out of his way to implement cheat codes similar to the ones made for the NDS games. there are now codes available for unlocking chapters without playing them, and infinite health!
try out the trilogy remaster with the best looking art, you won't regret it!
(requires a hacked 3DS. which if you haven't done to yours yet you totally should :P)

i think that dirk and roxy would have very different experiences on the internet. dirk would end up on liveleak, 4chan, reddit, forums related to adaves movies. an roxy would get gbatemp, youtube, alien forums. dirk just gets the fucked up sides of the internet. it would probably start from him clicking random links he saw in the movie forums.

I remembered that this account exists
Coming back here I realised that this profile picture is unique as it was during a phase of photo editing I'd gotten into, in this case only red was retained.
The YouTube channel is doing wonders for itself and so is the new train channel (FarmYard Trains, yes in the time between activity here I've launched another). That clocked up 101 subscribers in exactly 6 months, i.e. faster than the main channel.
This place seems more sane than Twitter (it doesn't have another name on my phone, it literally is called Twitter due to it installing an older package and every app store being incapable of updating it, HA) so that's already an improvement.
Besides YouTube I'm on Twitch (it's... there), GBAtemp (here and there), iFixit, you name it.
I'm not incredibly interesting over text (or in general) so do what you want.

That wierd time manga was on the 3DS eshop
Available only in Japan and France
Dokopon Choice
While looking for MH Stories on hshop (not gonna sugarcoat it, that was what I was doing)
I ran into something that caught my eye... a strange name Ive heard of every MH game on the platform so something was off when I saw a name I didnt recognize.
MH Flash... huh?
It coudnt be a game considering it was literarly 75MB and there were like 7 different volumes
looked it up and realised that was a manga... I thought it was going to be some sort of tie in bonus, like a series of 3D videos, because I never heard of anything like the 3DS having actual manga publications but...
No that wasnt the case actually, it was just a whole issue of Monster Hunter Flash
The menu did leave me asking some questions. it didnt look like something capcom themselves made, instead a platform that was made by a third party which lead to the question
"are there more of these?"
yes. there were.
And so I present to you one of the neatest things ive ever ran into while looking into the 3DS's catalogue
The French and Japanese eshop's selection of digital manga!
"どこぽんちょいす" - "Dokopon Choice”
Sadly its french equivalent had no such name holding everything together
No this is not homebrew, no this isnt a joke. This happened.
Where do I begin...
The 3DS has a neat history with ebooks
There were two services that provided ebooks on the system, these being: HONTO for 3DS and Dokodemo Honya-San. both exclusive to japan.
Honto had a more general ebook line up. no manga
Honya-San was kinda like that but you also had a whole lot of manga baby
So where does Dokopon Choises fit into this?
Well Dokopon Choise was the name for standalone releases of things found on Honya-San
Imagine it this way, in Honya-san, releases are treated like DLC
Through Dokopon its treated as its own app.
Purchases of Dokopon apps and Honya-San books are treated as separate so you could end up buying the same thing twice (its actually aknowledged on every dokopon release on the eshop, be careful that you dont buy the same thing twice by accident)
Both were managed by Librika, a digital book distribution company
That leads the question as to why I didnt make this post about Dokodemo Honya in general as that service has alot of things to talk about
Well Honya-San didnt make it out of japan... The only one that got out of japan was Dokopon Choise which is why I want to focus on it.
its an incredibly neat oddity for the system
Some day Ill have to do more propper research on HONTO for 3DS but for now lets focus on the french manga
So Japan makes sense but... France? why france of all places
Well from what ive read, apparently out of most countries in Europe. France had the largest audience for manga, which made something like this profitable.
Even then because of the small selection that made it over, it mostly feels like a small experiment more than anything
The french eshop had the following series:
Nisekoi
Professor Layton
Little Battlers Experience
Rock Lee (Manga spinoff)
Blue Exorcist
Monster Hunter Flash
Inazuma Eleven
Beyblade Metal Fusion
Beyblade Shogun Steel
List of series originally found on GBAtemp by user "Asia81"
I did go ahead and verify this list and indeed. this was everything that came out of this in france.
All of these with various amounts of volumes released. I believe the series with the most volumes on the service was that of beyblade metal fusion at a whopping 11 Volumes
What an odd bunch. France never got Dokodemo Honya san in any shape or form. only these series.
I wonder if the experiement worked out in any way.
Something I find wierd is that some of the ones here never got a Dokopon release in Japan. They most likely were stuck on Honya San
I sadly dont have any pricing information on these, there is alot I havent been able to find about the french releases... I hope some day more about these comes to light
So what about Japan? well to start, the selection was waaayy bigger
98 volumes of multiple series made it into the eshop. Thats quite a substancial increase.
(The following list is comprised (mostly) by the localised names of the series for the sake of making it easier to read. Romaji will be provided for some so they are easier to look up
and so you can see a few familiar names -w-
its also organized in order of release on the service)
The JP selection was:
Attack on Titan
Love's Reach
Magi
Detective Conan
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Screaming Lessons
DRAGON BALL (colored version)
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid
Monster Hunter Flash
FAIRY TAIL
Yozakura Quartet

I”s
Aoha Ride - Ao Haru Ride
Ane Doki
Ichigo 100% (color version)
Tokyo Ghoul Remastered Edition
Hatsukoi Limited.
Nisekoi
MY GOD thats alot more stuff than the french eshop
Something I would like to note is that these were sold as multi packs on the eshop. Tonari no Atashi has a Vol.1-10 pack which retailed at ¥4,400
The prices for the packs with multiple volumes are all over the place but they tend to float arround ¥1,800 to ¥5,125
Price depends on the amount of volumes offered and the series.
Jimikoi and 2.5D boyfriend were the cheapest of the entire lot at ¥400 and ¥880 respectively
And the most expensive release was in fact Tokyo Ghoul Remastered at a whopping ¥7,000 for Volume 1-14
Source
The list here did not include prices because most of these had multiple... multi packs like dragon ball.
Dragon Ball had like 1 pack for every arc and that would have been a pain to keep up with. maybe some other time I will go ahead and organize that info.
Something I found interesting is how the file size for the JP manga are considerably bigger than that of the french releases, most likely due to the french releases not being in multi packs.
The French releases were 75 MB a pop. No multi packs to my knowledge.
While the japanese releases often go over 200 MB. Most likely due to having most of the volumes in one singular download.
Keep in mind that the list here is only for what was on Dokopon Choise. Dokodemo Honya-San had even more things... but sadly due to the nature of it being a digital platform and its downloadable content not being shown on the eshop... I cant find more info on what was on the service...
Most I have is tweets of people talking about the service.
I found a tweet that showed how JOJO was on the service, ive seen tweets mentioning people reading nichijou on the service too
Original Tweet
I also sadly I cannot check on the application itself due the service shutting down and no clear archive of this stuff being out there. some day ill find a way to look more into this
Dokopon Choise got new releases from 2013 all the way to 2016.
Last release being Nisekoi in Japan.
I sadly dont have data on when they released for french audiences, I just have data on the JP releases.
All of the releases under Dokopon Choises were removed from the eshop in January 31, 2019
Source
and subsequently, Dokodemo Honya-San got removed in 2020
Users could buy manga up to February 28, 2020
And they could redownload their stuff up to July 30, 2020
Source
Luckily for anyone who purchased content on the 3DS, they had a chance to move their 3DS library to their web library.
Honya San wasnt only on 3DS, same as HONTO, it had a web client under the name Dokodemo Bookstore
To my knowledge it seems like users who still have the app, on their 3DS, with downloaded books can enjoy them just fine.
And despite Librika merging with MEDIA DO in 2019, it seems like Librika still operates their digital bookstore to this day on mobile platforms.
What an odd piece of nintendo history isnt it.
I thought I was going to make a short post for once but no I ended up having to do a bunch of research for this. Because if I didnt... who was going to talk about the damm book services on 3DS.
I think making the list of manga on the service was the worst part.
But yeah! I recommend giving these a shot! even if you dont understand japanese, its still really cool being able to show off manga on your 3DS outside of the homebrew manga reader.
Ima leave this off with two silly tweets about boobs being uncensored on the release of Dragon Ball on the platform lmao.
"What the Hell! The 3DS is increasingly becoming a wonderful piece of hardware that creates special fetishes in children!!"
That is going to live in my head rent free for a month LMAO
#Dawg why the fuck is Ro-Kyu-Bu here#get the fuck outta here#Anyway hoo boy! man this was a joy to research#Its always fun finding out fun things on handhelds like this... even if that list of titles was an absolute pain in the ass to write.#I would have added release dates but man I was so tired by the end of making the list lmao#Did you know librika was also responsible for distributing manga on the PSP's PSN#I found that out while looking into them hahaha#3DS#anime and manga#ebooks#nintendo 3ds
