Today marks the beginning of Season of Pride on Steam presented by MidBoss, IDGA, and Gayming Magazine, a festival for celebrating a variety of queer games. Two of my LGBT+ & boys love visual novels, Canvas Menagerie and Asphodelium, as part of the event.

I'm getting quite tired of seeing this nonsense, so let's do a quick summary post in case I need it later.

STEP 1: Platinum Games screws the absolute pooch on Bayonetta 3, pissing off their fan-base and gravely disappointing a lot of queer fans by swerving Bayonetta into a fairly out of nowhere romantic relationship with previously-mostly-comic-relief charming idiot character Luka. It's pretty universally panned as a dumb move at best, and downright hostile to the game's most passionate fanbase at worst.

STEP 2: A subset of fans use this bad game decision as a reason to start denying that the Bayonetta franchise has queer text or subtext at all. They argue, explicitly, that because Bayonetta ended up in a male/female relationship then she cannot be queer, and that her queerness can only exist or be considered a valid interpretation of her character if she ends up in a same-sex relationship. This is, by the extremely literal definition of the term, bi-erasure and a form of biphobia.

This is not all or most of the criticism of Bayonetta 3, but it is some of it. I see it happening live on social media, I have to block a few people because of it, and it boils my piss, to be quite frank.

STEP 3: Ty Galiz-Rowe, a nonbinary bisexual transmasc games writer, notices this tendency too, and pens a piece for Gayming Magazine called "Bayonetta 3 is bringing out people’s biphobia in a big way" which you can read here. In the piece, he voices a criticism of this tendency, and cites the work of a few other writers, including some who are bisexual themselves.

Those writers don't much appreciate the criticism, and Galiz-Rowe has a fairly civil discussion with them on Twitter about it that, as far as I can tell, ends amicably, with Galiz-Rowe admitting they wrote some of the piece with too much anger and directed some unfair criticisms. I do not believe the piece itself has been edited or amended, but Galiz-Rowe discussed some reflections about it on their personal twitter.

STEP 4: I retweet the article, because yeah, I have seen this biphobia going around and it annoys me too, and I think Galiz-Rowe did a good job putting words to the upset. I write a short thread getting rather heated about people denying the queer subtext (actually screw "subtext" it is text) of Bayonetta 2 because she didn't end up with Jeanne in 3. I direct this thread very specifically at people making the argument that "if Bayonetta had a straight relationship then she can't be queer" because that is, by the extremely literal and obvious definition of the term, biphobia.

STEP 5: People who can't separate disagreement from abuse, and who absolutely refuse to learn enough reading comprehension to understand when a thread is or isn't about them, decide to reach the head-ass conclusion above and have been tagging me with their imaginary grievances since October.

It is quite annoying, and I've had enough of ignoring the casual insults, so here's a post I can link to if someone asks about it in the future.

I'm wondering if it would help to write to gaming news sites and ask them to cover this whole Wyll situation? Gayming Magazine for example has a big focus on diversity in games and writes many articles about Baldur's Gate 3. Maybe that would increase the pressure on Larian?

So, yes,

Characters in BG3 are bi/pan. Karlach is bi/pan, dialogue shows this. HOWEVER, Sam confirms Karlach was intentionally portrayed as Sapphic, and if anyone wanted to romance Karlach anyway, great!

So, look. I am bisexual. I am touchy when it comes to bi erasure. But you also cannot attack lesbians for seeing Karlach as sapphic when that is exactly how Karlach was intentionally portrayed. It's up to you, the player, to decide what you want Karlach to be. And lesbians have juuuuuust as much right to own Karlach as bisexuals do in this case.

And I absolutely romance Karlach with women, because it does feel natural to me. I can see her with Wyll, too. But I get Sapphic vibes. And, well....there is a reason.

We don't need to attack each other over this in the community. Karlach literally does have two hands lol

Goodbye Volcano High among Gayming Magazine's LGBTQ games of 2023!

Gayming Magazine nominated Pathfinder's Lost Omens line for their LGBTQ Tabletop Game Award and a bunch of folks on Twitter are blasting them because "Pathfinder isn't queer." As if there aren't a pile of queer NPCs written by queers in scenarios made by queers and with gorgeous art made by queers.

A game doesn't need to be called "Queerest Game for Queer Folks: Queerer Edition" for it to be queer.

Your understanding of Shadowhearts character is bad and you should feel bad. Again everything you say just proves the point of the original post. Also the fact that cishet men romance Shadowheart the most doesn't mean jack shit for what her character actually is, all you're doing is pointing out that they don't engage with her character seriously and then taking it as permission to do the same. Totally unfair to tar the queer people who resonate with and have been touched by her story. For God's sake she won LGBT character of the year from Gayming magazine!! If she's so boring to you why do you feel the need to talk about her so much?

A common issue in fandom spaces is female characters ignored in favor of their male counterparts, and one of the biggest reasons I see given is that the women just aren't as interesting as the men. They're placed in lesser roles with less story impact, less personality, less character development, so of course the men get more fan interest.

With that in mind, here's 9 sets of characters who DO have comparable characterization, plot relevance/presence, and personal development -- and how many tagged works each character has on Archive of Our Own. Spoilers: it's pretty bad.

Do you like queer representation? Do you like Star Wars? Maybe you even like Star Wars: The Old Republic? Well I know I certainly do!

I wrote an article for Gayming Magazine on the state of LGBTQ+ representation in Star Wars: The Old Republic - the lacking past, the growing present, and the hopeful future.

My goal with the article was to take a realistic but hopeful approach to LGBTQ+ representation in SWTOR.

We can’t deny and shouldn’t ignore both past and present problems within the game however that doesn’t mean we cannot praise and take comfort in the steps the SWTOR team at BioWare have clearly taken to improving this game’s queer representation.

“In an industry where it can often be so hard to believe better representation is coming, to feel as if we matter to the games we love, SWTOR has given us exactly what a Star Wars game should: a new hope.”
