The Documented Adventure of A Sheltered Kobold in Tennessee: Part 1 (Further Pics in Reblogs!)
Me and @domesticangel celebrated our 3rd anniversary in the Pigeon Forge/ Gatlinburg area this past week. I don’t usually enjoy taking pictures of myself, so instead I let [insert name of personal choice here] do my touring for me. He got to meet many new people and get his own stupid little tourist souvenirs. He got called a loser by our very gay Dick’s waiter.

Okay in the least creepy way possible- it’s litterally my dream to move to TN. Hopefully in the next couple of years.
I haven’t settled on ~where~ in TN yet, but me and my best friends all want to move up there one day. We’ve got a list of cities we’ve looked into, but i’d love to be within an hour of nash (maybe somewhere near murfreesboro? But the homies wanna be right on the smokies). We were just in manchester for Roo!
Sooooo. Maybe one day? 😂 unfortunately, not very likely atm. However, i am always looking for an excuse to find myself in TN.
No kidding? Tennessee is not the best place to live for the Gays lmao. Nashville is so lovely though. Itll always have my heart.
Though pigeon forge and the Smokies area is BEAUTIFUL. 😍
I’ve never been to Roo, but a shit ton of my friends go.

Oc questions based on @saint-14s-gay-pigeon asks post
(Because I know no one would ask me and I want to flesh my characters out. Any questions I answered already in my character sheets I will not answer again) ((I will post link to asks at a later time))
Part 2
Xäræswulf-2
----------‐--------------‐-------------------------------------------------------------
1. What is your Guardian’s favorite color? Is that preference reflected in their gear and/or appearance?
Blue, but if his armor isn't some mix of orange and black, it bothers him severely.
2. What is your Guardian’s favorite season/weather?
He is a nature boy in general but has a soft spot for winter and spring. He also adores thunderstorms and finds the thunder relaxing.
3. Is your guardian part of an established fireteam?
Xäræswulf is part of Fireteam Fenrir with Admes Galan and Kota-8. Xäræswulf tends to be a lone wolf until the situation calls for backup. Previous to Xäræswulf, Kota and Admes were the original duo.
4. What’s a talent/hobby your Guardian has outside of combat?
Xäræswulf likes to explore and wander outside as well as exercise such as running, hiking, weight, lifting, etc. He likes to read whenever he gets the chance. Due to his size, much of his gear had to be custom-made so he picked of the skill of forging and blacksmithing to compensate for it.
5. Which NPC does your Guardian get along with the best? What do they like about them?
Shaxx and Saint 14 are the two people Xäræswulf gets along with the most. He likes their passion and enthusiasm and that it's tempered by humility, not filled with arrogance. He adores Saint's compassion and Shaxx's unwavering faith. He deeply admires Osiris's refusal to do niceties when he could be doing good instead.
6. Are there any NPCs they’re especially at odds with? Why don’t they get along?
Asher Mir and Spider are two people that he clashes with greatly. Spider is just a terrible person and Asher Mir's arrogance and disrespectfulnesss bother him. Unlike Osiris, Asher Mir does not give Xäræswulf the impression that he cares.
7. How would your Guardian comfort a friend after receiving some bad news?
He would be brutally honest as he doesn't really believe in lying as well as softening the blow. He would then be there if they needed something as he wouldn't be sure how to comfort them.
8. What is your Guardian’s idea of a good party/celebration?
Xäræswulf doesn't like parties as he finds them too loud and have far too many people. He would like a more intimate party filled with close friends.
10. What does your Guardian do to relax? Do they ever relax?
Physical exercise and traipsing through the outdoors are relaxing for him. He also likes doing maintenance on his weapons as a way to stim and calm down. He likes to keep himself occupied so he doesn't really relaxed.
11. Does your Guardian have any tattoos/piercings/engravings/other body modifications?
He has nordic/viking engravings on his chassis as a nod to his Scandinavian heritage.
12. Your Guardian is in charge of arranging takeout and a movie for the fireteam to enjoy together; what kind of food and genre of movie would they pick?
Something with rice and meat for a hearty filling meal. Xäræswulf is terribly picky about movies, though he would lean more towards sci-fi.
13. How does your Guardian show affection? Are they very free with their affection or is it typically reserved for a special few?
To most people, they would think Xäræswulf a very cold and closed off person, which is true to an extent. Xäræswulf doesn't like touching or being touched by other people very often, so it limits how much affection he doles out even to those closest. When he does, he doesn't hold back in the slightest.
14. A Warlock has invited your Guardian to an hour of quiet group meditation; does that sound appealing to them? Would they go regardless?
Xäræswulf is more of a lone wolf (pun ha), and dislikes being idle so he would not go.
15. Would your Guardian dress for a formal/black tie event? How about for a day at the beach?
Suit with a pauldron cape attached cause he likes the feel of the fabric. For a day at the beach, he would wear a nice comfortable pair of shorts and a pair of sunglasses.
16. Is there an animal that you associate with your Guardian or that you feel represents them?
Wolf (obviously), though more specifically, Fenrir or vargr from norse mythology. A nod to his ferocity, loyalty, downright feralness, and God killing feats.
17. Is there a specific weapon or type of weapon that they’re most comfortable using? How about one they rarely, if ever use?
Xäræswulf loves using big ass swords as deep down he's spiritually a viking. He hates the firepower and size of sidearms, so he rarely uses them
18. Does your Guardian have any bad habits or vices?
Xäræswulf has no physical vices. However, he is prone to impulsive acts and unhinged/feral behaviors when pushed or significantly stressed. In addition to being headstong and assertive.
19. Did your Guardian kill Uldren or did Petra?
Xäræswulf killed Uldren alongside Petra to stop his reign of terror within the reef.
20. Does your Guardian like to dance? What’s their go-to emote, if they have one?
Xäræswulf loves to dance and is proud to show off his moves.
21. What was your Guaridan’s reaction when meeting Crow for the first time? How has their impression of him changed over time?
Xäræswulf felt as if he was slapped in the face the first time he met Crow and feared Crow would be like Uldren. Xäræswulf is now good friends with Crow and he has exceeded Wulf's first expectations. He still believes that Crow has an impulsivity that matches Uldren and not necessarily to his benefit.
22. How does your Guardian feel about using Stasis?
Ambivalent, stasis does not make him evil. Only he can corrupt himself.
23. What are your Guardian’s thoughts on Misraaks? Caiatl?
He respects both Misraaks and Caiatls' bravery to go against the grain of their culture and do the unexpected and ally with humanity. He is not particularly close to either of them.
24. Where does your Guardian live/stay while not on duty?
For the longest time, he lived on his jumpship before Ghost bullied him into getting an apartment.
25. What is your Guardian’s Ghost’s name? How is their relationship with their ghost?
Ghost has stated that he like his name, so Xäræswulf does not argue. If Xäræswulf could name him, he would call him Baldur or Adal.
Adal means noble or precious in German
Baldur was a beloved God known for his kindness, radiance, beauty and fairness, all of which are traits Ghost Possesses. Baldur could also only be killed by mistletoe, the same way ghosts can only really be killed by paracausal means.

Hello everyone! This post is a little bit different from my usual posts. If you‘ve seen some of my posts, the majority are Dream SMP related, but today I have a story to share.
This week is my spring break. If you didn‘t know, CPS has one of the latest spring breaks in the country. We are visiting Tennessee for our break, and today we went to DollyWood in Pigeon Forge. If you don’t know what DollyWood is, it is a theme park in the the town where famous country singer Dolly Parton grew up. Before you say that we shouldn’t be visiting a theme park during a pandemic, I completely understand that, and me and my family would never have gone if we weren’t being completely safe. We took all necessary precautions to be able to take this trip and have a break.
So we arrived at DollyWood today, and we decided to fo wait in line for a ride. We ended up not going on the ride at the time when the ride broke down and had to be closed for a quick fix(we ended up going on that ride later)
So instead we went to a different area of the park, where we got in line for a different ride. While we were waiting in line, I was listening to the conversations around me, because I didnt want to talk to my family at that moment. I was listening, and overheard the group in front of us talking. The adult of the group asked all the kids if they were virtual or in person schooling . This conversation then moved to the fact that there was a trans student at their school. The kids in the group said that if they added or changed the bathrooms to accommodate trans students they were staying virtual. The adult said that they trans student in question was making a huge problem out of something that wasn’t important. They were overall very rude about the fact that there was a trans student and made no effort to keep quiet about their conversation. Overhearing this conversation made me so very unhappy, when amusement parks are supposed to be a place of joy and memories. If you don’t know, I use all pronouns and identify as gender non-conforming. I am ace/aro as well. I am part of the LGBTQ+ community. Coming to visit Tennessee, I knew that it was more than likely that I would hear my community slandered for being who we are, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt when it happened. A lot of people in the LGBTQ+ community make the joke about being illegal in over 74 countries, and I am one of them. I am very much against going somewhere we’re I will not be respected for who I am. I don’t want to visit Poland, even though it’s where my mom is from. And I know a lot of people feel the same. I won’t want to visit somewhere I know I won’t feel safe for being who I am, even though no one knows.
There is a bright side to this story, I promise. A little after we had lunch, we were walking through a different area of the park. We decided to stop and get some ice cream as a little bit of a dessert. We sat down in a dining pavilion right near a food stand. While I was sitting and eating my ice cream two people walked past wearing rainbow masks. I watched them a little bit, and I saw them start to hold hands. I in no way mean to assume gender identity when I say that this was two men. And it just made me so happy to see a (presumably) gay couple in a place where I could /see/ religion and homophobia rolling off of people in waves. And they were proud of it too. No shame in being who they were. The point of me telling this story was to share something that made me incredibly happy after overhearing something that made me feel bad for the person they were talking about, for having to go through the blatant transphobia that was evident in these people who had no problem with down talking someone who had to go through the trouble of fighting for a basic human right because of who they are.
The other point of sharing this was to show someone who needs to hear it that things can get better. Not everything will. But a lot of things do. You will become who you want to be in the future, and you will show everyone just how strong you are to have gone through what you have gone through to get to the point you are at. Because everybody’s story is different. Let’s hear them all.
Before I’m done, I want to remind everyone that reads this to have something to eat, drink some water, take your meds, have a shower, and have a nap or go to sleep, wake up and do something that will make you happy. I want you to take care of yourself. Put on some music and just take a break from reality.
Do it for me, for your family and friends who want to see you thrive, and do it for yourself.
Today is a feel-good day.
I love you all so much.
You are valid, please remember that.
Love you, Hayden :)

Hey y’all! Just here to remind you that black lives still, and always will, matter!
I’ve decided to share my outlook on things I think could cause some controversy (even though they shouldn’t):
1) I believe we, as a country owe more than just an apology to Black Americans, as well as every other Person of Color. Y’all don’t deserve the hand y’all were delt. It was a hand that white people assigned to you (yes I am white. If you don’t know that then girl bye.)
I’ve been an avid supporter of Black Lives Matter, and will always be.
2) Black Americans deserve the same rights I had growing up... access to a good education, good jobs, and endless opportunities.
However, America has thrived on keeping Black people down. As well as every other group of Non-White, Non-United States citizen....
3) Most of White America needs to wake up. Let us stand side by side, hand in hand, with all of the races, religions, and cultures that molded our country into such a delicacy. You can like what you like here and love who you love. That’s what makes America, AMERICA. Duh. I respect all of my peers and their views...
So why can’t some respect the fact that they will never have to feel the wrath of just existing in this crazy world?
Just to give an insight to my past... when I moved to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee (which is under protection of The Patron Saint of the Smokies (Dolly Parton, you ignorant snuff), I was dropped kicked when my boyfriend kissed me on the cheek. AND THEN THEY HAD THE AUDACITY TO BLAME ME FOR THE INCIDENT.
Like for real... I remember walking home hoping someone wouldn’t decide to mess with me.
It happened a few times. I just ran (I was past of the track team to not only stay hot but make my father proud.)
Would it have been different if I were a GAY person of color? Oh heck yes hunny. I guarantee it.
This life is short. Let us love one Another. And embrace our diffences. We all have to share one another’s differences. So let us. We can rise from the depths like an unseen tidal wave.

gatlinburg is full of small little shops and restaurants (but some stores are pro confederate and that makes going there uncomfortable, pigeon forge is basically right next to it and it's super fun, dollywood is really fun (even if u dont like roller coasters it's fully of interesting things), and if u want an hour drive knoxville is a beautiful city with a whole lot to do (if it's open the art museum is amazing and there's a chocolate shop down the street from it) - a gay from knoxville
oh! well I’m actually technically gonna be closer to knoxville than gatlinburg n I definitely plan on visiting the art museum (if it’s open)
I think dollywood is closed :( but if it isn’t I’m gonna drag my boyfriend there >:)

Monthly Update: January 2019
The new year is here! A new year for me to try to finally accomplish my goal of publishing one book (regardless of length) once every month. I kind of failed that last year. It didn't help that I didn't set the goal for myself until half way though the year... but even after I set the goal I still missed two months. No book in October and no book in December. But seeing as those are the two busiest months for me I'm not surprised.
This year I want to beat what I did last year. Last year I published 10 books.
February - Extra Service at the Blue Moon
March - It's Not Gay If It's A Catboy
May - (Three books that month) Another Spinosaurus Wet Dream, The Dino Dimension Saga Omnibus: Vol 1, and The Dino Sisters: A Snow Bunny Tale
June - Doggy Style 2
July - Mouse Powered Baby Momma Revolution
August - The Velociraptor Rental Mom
September - So Maybe I Swallowed My Coworker... I'm a Snake!
November - The Dank Wildcats Vol. 1
This year I want to make it 12 books and I want to be able to have one for each month. But as long as we are looking back at last year, what book was my favorite from 2018? That's a hard one. I'm kind of torn between Another Spinosaurus Wet Dream and The Dino Sisters. I think if I have to pick just one, I'm going to go with Another Spinosaurus Wet Dream. The Dino Sisters was tons of fun to write and I love those characters. It was also my first time writing an espionage thriller, which was also fun. But I think Another Spinosaurus Wet Dream had to be my favorite project of the year. It was great seeing the whole Dino Dimension Saga finally start to fall into place with a clear understanding of how the books were connected, and that was the book that did it. Also the research I had to do for that book was great too.
Helen: Hey Violet, let's take a road trip over to Pigeon Forge and hit all the tourist traps!
Violet: What? That sounds expensive.
Helen: But it's for research! For a book!
Violet: You just want to ride the Jurassic Jungle Boat, don't you?
Helen: But it's for research...
But now that 2018 is over what can you look forward to from me in 2019?
For starters that Yiffpunk book I've been teasing over the last month is in editing and that should hopefully be coming out soon-ish. It's a bit of a long one. My first full length novel, so it probably won't be done in time for this month. With luck, next month. There is still that novella about a werehippo that I was commissioned to do and that is still in production. I've been taking a little more time on it because this is a book someone else actually requested and I don't want it to feel forced. (Because, yeah, I feel like some of my own books do feel forced.) I want it to be good so I'm taking time to give it extra love and care instead of just sitting myself down and forcing myself to write until I'm done. So unless I get a sudden burst of inspiration in the next few days, I doubt that will be done in time for a late January release either.
But not to fear. I will still have something out this month. Even if I have to cave in and sell all the Yiffpunk preview stories in a collected volume for $0.99 as a prelude book, (which would mean I wouldn't be able to run that one on Kindle Unlimited) I'll still get something published this month. Although hopefully I won't have to do that and I can get another short story out in time. I have something short I'm kicking around already so hopefully that will work.
Here's a hint.
What else can you expect from me this year? Well for starters I'm going to start putting free stories up on my eka's portal account. I haven't had the time to do that yet but that a top priority for me. I have an account over there so I'm going to use it. As for published books, there are a few things I hope to get done this year. I'd like to release at least 2 more books in The Underground series this year. I would like to finish another book in the Dino Dimension Saga and release a Dino Dimension Saga Omnibus Vol 2. I definitely want to do a Dank Wildcats Vol 2 this year. I'd love to put out another, maybe even two more books, in the Snow Bunny series. Everyone is begging for another Miss Nolly book so I really want to be able to give everyone another one of those. And I also have two works of Bizarro Sci-fi that I would really like to see completed this year.
So let's hope I have a productive year!

Sexy Stuf.
I just got back from Nashville yesterday after spending a nice New Years there. I also went to Dollywood. I actually kind of like the place, but I’m not sure if it’s because my bestest friends live there now or if it’s because I actually like the vibe. It’s a little hard to discern and I think I will have to do another trip this year to figure it out.
It’s Tennessee, you know what I’m saying?
I didn’t really get the sense that anyone gave a fuck in Nashville or Pigeon Forge that gay people exist or are bothered with it, but outside of those two places it seemed a little scary. My concern is it’s a lot scary for the gayz that live there.
Very confusing but fun place... I will give it a B-. I was gonna give an A-, but there was a tornado warning on New Years Eve (in December/January?!?), Dollywood is kinda boring on the last day of the season (it wouldn’t have been visited on the last day if there wasn’t a tornado warning), it’s very confusing as a tourist to grasp the fact that the state has two timezones, and there is a weird dichotomy of religious/sex store billboards and they literally coexist right next to each other, but Nashville has all the music I like going 7 days a week (I like some country but mostly Bluegrass), there was hot tofu tacos, and Sevierville has a store called “Sexy Stuf” that made me giggle like a teenager.
Edit: Now that I think about it, my friends are a little upset regarding their “diet” Delta 8 marijuana that they have to consume while living in the state. I don’t really do that sorta thing, but it’s 2022, and I think it’s kinda a dumb thing to outlaw these days. So maybe I’ll give it a C. I’m just an Oregonian libtard *shrug emoji*

short trip home (part 2—west of the divide & back)
Two famous movies produced before Technicolor became standard, when it remained costly and labor-intensive—The Wizard of Oz (1939) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945)—still made strategic limited use of it: in Oz (at length) as the vivid dyes rendering Dorothy’s polychrome dreamland; in Gray as the jolt bringing us face-to-face with Dorian’s corruption and cruelty.
Audiovisual entertainments are now so immersive and realistic that it’s hard to gauge what impact the selective use of color once may have had on movie audiences familiar only with black-and-white. Yet both films’ technique came to mind as I drove from east to west over Rogers Pass—from dry, late icebound winter into full-blown mountain spring. I weighed switching to color for the second half of this post.
That would have strained an already slight parallel. But the greens of the meadows and forest floors along the Blackfoot Valley did rival the John-Deere-tractor hue of the Wicked Witch of the West’s face. And the unidentifiable roadkill emerging here and there from the ditches’ receding snows could have resembled (since it was already on my mind) Dorian’s vile portrait-corpse.
The Blackfoot Valley has less idiosyncratic ties to cinema with Robert Redford’s A River Runs Through It (1992), the movie based on the title novella of an autobiographical collection by Norman Maclean, a retired Shakespeare professor from the University of Chicago, who had grown up in Missoula. The film doesn’t come close to conveying the story’s wonder and laconic pathos, I’ve always thought. The collection, never promoted, and published by an academic press since no commercial publisher would touch it, was in my teens a dog-eared parable passed around among fly-fishing family and friends, who took it to heart before it grew widely famous (although my paternal grandfather, an ardent fly-fisherman and churchgoer, like the author’s father, found it scandalous).
The Big Blackfoot River comprises the healing waters that course through the story, though other streams make appearances too. The Blackfoot is “multitudinous,” “gossamer,” “electrically charged,” and above all “beautiful”: a bestower of glory and haloes; a shadow-maze, an oracle, a cipher. It’s the timeless current that recalls for Maclean his brother, Paul, and helps him come to terms, imperfectly, with Paul’s bewildering character and at last his murder.
The North Fork of the Blackfoot River (web photo)
In July and August, the Blackfoot pours like molten crystal through long, at times suddenly sharp, curves, tinged emerald in its channels and holes. But in mid-May this year it raged down in such muddy volume that its rapids’ usual din fell to a whisper—an unnerving sign of power and mass—and it flooded flatter parts of the valley floor in shining swaths. I wondered how the fabled trout within it were surviving such forces.
At various points, Highway 200 and the river diverge, to cross again miles further down. At each successive crossing that day its torrent seemed doubled. Near the sawmill and railroad town of Bonner, where the Blackfoot joins with the Clark Fork River, it ran as wild and full as I could have imagined possible for the river I had known since childhood.
A few miles yet further down, in Missoula, the Clark Fork surged too. As its banks bloomed obliviously with lilac and chokecherry, the river smashed through town at 100-year flood levels, completely drowning Brennan’s Wave, the white-water hydraulic there beloved of kaykers and river surfers. Norman Maclean’s Blackfoot had here become T.S. Eliot’s strong brown god —“sullen, untamed, and intractable.”

Brennan’s Wave in May a few years ago
Most of the city itself hadn’t flooded, though, and bustled with the business of graduation, taking note of the Clark Fork’s maelstrom from its bridges but preoccupied with its own rhythms and rituals.
Indeed nearly all weekend the weather and setting were paradisal. The crabapples’ white profusion disappeared here and there into the snows of the Missoula Valley’s five surrounding mountain ranges. Lawns and trees pulsed green in long spring light. There were parties for the graduates and their families, smiles and toasts and a palpable sense of relief. The student house where my nephew lived stood just a block west of the campus, a neighborhood that includes beautiful yards and small mansions of various architectural inspiration.

Missoula embraces its identity as a political and civic oasis in a deep red state, still retaining some air of the working-class progressivism forged through its early ties to the railroads, timber industry, and Forest Service. The university, of course, has long reinforced this culture on its own terms, as do Patagonia-wearing millionaires who’ve moved there for close access to wilderness. The city itself has bucked the regressive zoning and land-use trends elsewhere in Montana to restrict sprawl and keep the bare foothills cradling it mostly development-free. Those foothills constantly draw the gaze upward and shift with clouds and light; from the busy center of town their emptiness somehow calms the heart.

In Missoula, on the south bank of the Clark Fork
Missoula cherishes its oddities, too, human and otherwise—probably none moreso than the dramatis personae haunting the Smead-Simons building, Montana’s first skyscraper, known as the Wilma. Standing tall on the downtown-side bank of the Clark Fork, the building’s early history (available in various accounts) revolves mainly around its opulent movie theater and the Crystal Plunge, an indoor Olympic-size pool (another Montana first). Through the years chapters featuring a perfumed fountain, Mahalia Jackson, ornithomania, and David Lynch were added. Its apotheosis was the Chapel of the Dove, a shrine assembled in its basement to venerate Korro Hatto, the beloved pet pigeon of longtime Wilma owner Eddie Sharp.
Though openly gay (when being so in the American West carried serious risk) and half her age, Sharp had married Edna Simons (née Wilma), the widow of the the Wilma’s founding owner and a former Vaudeville singer. Sharp revered and dearly loved her. According to Missoulians I know, but no written account I could find, Sharp came recognize Korro Hatto as Edna Simons-Sharp’s reincarnation at some point after her death in 1954; the chapel was an exact replica of chapel where they had married four years earlier in New York City. Korro Hatto, Sharp’s constant shoulder-perching companion, lived to the age of twenty, and they are interred together, along with Sharp’s subsequent partner of forty years, Robert Sias, in Missoula City Cemetery.
Missoula is now home to several start-up breweries and distilleries, but still hosts a number of its original taverns, most notable (to me, anyway), the Oxford—”the Ox”—whose blackjack tables never close and which used to serve brains and eggs as part of its 24-hour breakfast menu. The poet Richard Hugo, perhaps besides Maclean the most famous literary figure who lived and taught in Missoula, drank and socialized here and in the town’s numerous other “cavelike, majestically slow-moving Western barrooms.”
Stars are not in reach. We touch each other by forgetting stars in taverns, and we know the next man when we overhear his grief. Call the heavens cancerous for laughs, and pterodactyls clown deep in that fragmented blue. In that red heart a world is beating counter to the world.
Soon enough, It was time to drive back, to cross the Divide again in my rental car (which my youngest nephews, twins, relentlessly deemed “gutless”)—this time from west to east. The flight home to Minnesota would depart the next morning at a harsh pre-dawn hour.
After goodbyes, we headed out in a caravan. I did so with a heavy heart—the weekend had been too short, the family time joyous but jumbled, the fragrant sliver of springtime achingly perfect. The road from Missoula to Great Falls is still beautiful, though the views eventually resolve, once over Rogers Pass, into the forlornness of eastern Montana. The late afternoon sun, falling behind us, kept out of our eyes and lit the shifting landscapes ahead. The Blackfork River dwindled as we climbed, at first only slightly, but by Lincoln decidedly. The snows on pass had mostly melted away. We sped through Lewis and Clark and Cascade counties, past ranches and windbreaks and homemade antigovernment signs nailed to fenceposts, anxious for our destination. At Vaughn, though, rather than taking the interstate where it crosses highway 200, we cut off on the road leading to First People’s Buffalo Jump State Park, or the Ulm pishkun as it’s locally known. The twilit hills and coulees glowed pink and gold. We stopped and got out of the car at the turnoff to McIver Road just to take in the sunset for a few minutes, then got back in and drove the rest of the way to my brother’s house before dark.

My Favorite Films of 2018, Part 2
Part 1 is right here: http://ryanmeft.tumblr.com/post/182987886772/my-favorite-films-of-2018-part-1
They Shall Not Grow Old
The documentary can be a pretty static form of film making. You talk to witnesses, research subjects, check your facts, find footage, and compile your movie. What to do, though, when the subject comes from the very beginnings of film, before color, sound or halfway decent film stock? If you’re Peter Jackson, obsessed with World War I, and also a little bit certifiably insane, here is what you do: visit actual locations to colorize old footage the way it would have looked, hire lip readers and scour old documents to determine what the silent soldiers were saying, and spend four years with your team restoring the visual records of The War To End All Wars until it almost looks like it was filmed yesterday. Rare scenes of actual battle are less important than those of men in the trenches awaiting their last stand, or audio of them discussing simple pleasures like cigarettes and fresh underwear. Done for the hundredth anniversary of the war’s end, Jackson and company are keenly aware that these century-starting events, and the people who lived them, are being swiftly forgotten as a new century rolls on it. And he’ll be damned if he’s going to allow that.
The Favourite
An acid-tongued look at royalty that is as darkly comedic and disdainful of courtly privilege as most Anglophile movies are worshipful of it, Yorgos Lanthimos’s film about a mentally ill woman surrounded by vipers in human suits is sharp enough to cut bone. Starring Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman in a triptych of roles that are highlights of their already sterling careers, there’s no chivalrous honor or ladylike poise to be found here, only manipulation, resentment, cunning and ambition. Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara’s screenplay is a devilish delight of double entendres, threats veiled and open, and wordplay more venomous than a pit of snakes. Witness the fantastically brutal interactions of Stone and Weisz as they seek to make each other bleed without weapons. Robbie Ryan’s camera passes on the normally grandiose portrayals of English courts, and Fiona Crombie’s production design focuses on shadowed, claustrophobic halls and gritty detail, with the result that it all feels like the dark, crowded, petty place it would have in life. Perhaps it took a Greek director to puncture the stuffed shirt of so many British period pieces.
Zama
The man sees himself only in his own mind. To him, he is a diligent, brave, upright servant of the Spanish Empire, enduring the unimaginable hardship of being given an assignment far from his family. To the South American locals, he is a pompous stuffed shirt who may not do much real harm, but isn’t good for anything particularly useful, either. To the revolutionary bandits who roam the countryside, he is both a simple of the oppression of their unasked-for Spanish overlords, and simply a pigeon whose pockets are ripe for the picking. Fiction often portrays the imperialists who forcibly colonized the world as evil racists, and that’s not far off the mark. Lucretia Martel goes in for something a little more understated, looking at a minor imperial functionary through the lens of his dull life and duller aspirations. That may not sound exciting, but Rui Pocas’s choice of shots drenches the viewer in a world of unending color and beauty, contrasting starkly with the gray and pointless place Don Diego sees. A perfectly measured performance by Daniel Gimenez Cacho completes this meditative work.
First Reformed
I’m not gonna lie to you all: this is probably my Inside Llewyn Davis for the year, the movie I’ll still be bringing up in five years as proof that people don’t actually want to see original films. Ethan Hawke turns in the performance of his career as a disillusioned Reverend relegated to a tiny tourist church in a multi-million-dollar religious empire, whose encounter with a radical environmental activist leaves him shaken. It’s been called a Taxi Driver for the modern age, but Paul Schrader’s film is much more than that. The Reverend’s faith is genuine, while the pain of his past, his attraction to a dead man’s widow, and his newfound passion for the planet are also completely genuine. Ernst Toller is a man who can hold multitudes, and Hawke brings them all to life. The final shot leaves us to puzzle out which is most powerful for ourselves. Schrader’s film is about a world in which we are almost always asked to choose expediency over ethics, even if we wear a frock that claims to say otherwise.
Can You Ever Forgive Me?
If there’s one thing you can reliably expect from the movies, it is that they will romanticize the creative arts. On the screen, writers who are good are always successes, and not having put out a book in ten years never results in losing your beachfront home. Then there’s the true story of Lee Israel, who coped with her vanished success by forging letters from famous authors. Israel, played by Melissa McCarthy in a role you didn’t know she had in her, is clearly the hero of the story: her goal is not to get rich but to pay the bills, and most people don’t really feel too broken-hearted when the kind of person who pays thousands for a signature gets ripped off. Marielle Heller and screenwriter Nicole Holofcener don’t rely on simple distinctions, though. Israel herself is only sporadically likable, with the only person who will endure her being a drunken and irresponsible gay friend played by Richard E. Grant. It’s hard to sympathize with writers when Hollywood casts them all as wealthy and alluring. McCarthy’s role is anything but; Israel is an abrasive working stiff, and we can’t help but root for her, despite her deep flaws.
If Beale Street Could Talk
Much like the writings of James Baldwin, Barry Jenkins’ adaptation is not to much a plot with a clear story progression as a series of episodes in the life of a family. An innocent black man has been imprisoned by the racist testimony of a white cop, with his pregnant wife struggling to free him, but that is mere detail. What makes the movie stand out is the way it is shot, weaving not only between past and present but between perspectives. Two fathers discuss their fears over drinks. A hopeful couple, denied other housing, moves imaginary belongings into an under-construction loft. Two men look at each over beers and years and try to figure out if black men have a place in 1970’s New York. Two families meet to announce the pregnancy and it ends in a war with no winner. This is all supported by a moving score and cinematography that evokes the fall of the year. Jenkins is unafraid to start things that have no catharsis, and ultimately to suggest that maybe life is just a series of events with no satisfying conclusions.
Damsel
Damsel is a black comedy feminist adventure western, but once you’ve got that many keywords in one paragraph, isn’t the very idea of genre being stretched? Yes, and to viciously brutal effect. Directed by David and Nathan Zellner and featuring a acidic performance from the underrated Mia Wasikowska, it appears to be a traditional damsel-in-distress story, until it turns out the heroic rescuer has deluded himself, the priest accompanying him is a cowardly fraud, and the women being rescued doesn’t actually need rescued. What follows is a journey through the wild west frontiers as darkly comic as it can get without ever tipping over into satire. The men are cowardly and useless, the woman must fend for herself, and what results is the sort of takedown of a genre that, sadly, doesn’t reach very many viewers. You can say it’s a political film, but for me, it seems like the Zellners were simply enjoying flipping every western trope ever made on its head and into a ravine.
As I said, the list is 14 movies long because I simply could not bring myself to cut any more films from it. However, I loved a lot of films this year, perhaps more than any other year in recent memory, and I want to mention many of the “runners-up” here: Beast, Isle of Dogs, Eighth Grade, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Cold War, The Insult, A Quiet Place, Alpha, You Were Never Really Here, Puzzle, The Rider, On Chesil Beach, The Old Man and the Gun, Love After Love, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Hearts Beat Loud, Leave No Trace, The Death of Stalin, Shoplifters, Dark River. Every one of these was as worthy and memorable as any on the main list; it’s just a matter of space, really. There are also many incredibly acclaimed films I simply was not able to get my hands on in time for this list.

Vancouver Crew Headcanons
Koh -The baby of the group -Just the sweetest, most adorable guy you've ever met -170 cm in cleats -Not the best soccer player but he tries. The Aglionby soccer team isn’t exactly going to regionals (the crew team is really good for a team from the mountains) -Koh is one of the three Vancouver crowd members not actually from Vancouver (the others are Rutherford and SickSteve). He’s from Incheon, outside of Seoul, and only learned English in school -The worst at foreign languages. It's amazing he speaks as much English as he does. Very noticeable and cute accent. Can’t pronounce anyone’s name correctly. The VC rolls with it -Will probably end up following in his dad’s footsteps and working for LG Chem -Loves Ryang. LOVES Ryang. He finds the pretentiousness funny. Most of the time
SickSteve -Going head to head with Adam Parrish and one other dude for valedictorian -Film buff. Obnoxious film buff. Only Ryang can top him for obnoxiousness -Such an asshole. The VC highkey love it. SickSteve is very good at pinpointing the crux of an issue and confronting people about it. Don’t debate SickSteve. Don’t. Also don’t say ignorant shit unless you’re prepared to get your ass handed to you -Dealing with a lot of issues, including internalized homophobia, due to a Baptist upbringing and strict parents. Not the only one in the VC with strict parents but definitely the only one with super-religious parents and the threat of losing an entire community if he goes against them -Is definitely going to elope with Lee-Squared at some point -Koh's bestie primarily because SickSteve is first generation. They largely speak in Korean. Koh makes fun of SickSteve’s Jeollado and SickSteve makes fun of his aegyo, and both just find the relationship really comforting
Lee-Squared -Puts up a good front of being incredibly nice and supportive but agrees with SickSteve on basically everything -Chubby. Struggles with his weight. His family doesn’t help -Probably the only one completely and utterly unafraid to tell Henry his mind -Will almost certainly go into immigration law or a similar field -Along with Koh, Henry, and SickSteve, fluent in Korean -Has the hots for SickSteve like woah. Talk about slowburn
Ryang -Slightly nasal voice -Trans boy -Art snob hipster. Black and white photos are his fave. He’s actually pretty good but his pretentiousness outweighs it -Koh tries to gush over his photos but it’s more feeling than words -Mom is a semi-famous daytime soap star; dad is her former personal trainer. Has an older sister who is a niche underwear model -Guess who hates paparazzi -Third generation. Ryang speaks almost no Korean and he’s more than a little sensitive about it -Doesn’t fall for Koh nearly as fast as Koh falls for him -Insecure. His insecurities tend to come out as criticisms of Koh and his intelligence (it scares Ryang that the only guy who's into him is a dumb foreign guy who barely speaks English. It scares him that Koh accepts him so easily- does he just not understand? Does he think Ryang is something he's not? -Ryang doesn't know because his Korean is miles worse than Koh's English)
Rutherford -Cryptid and conspiracy theory king. -Thinks he’s the weird, anxious one but he’s actually kind of unrecognizedly awesome? -Dirtbikes, skateboards, surfs, probably a sick snowboarder. His sports friends think his cryptid obsession is hilarious. The VC tends to ignore it -Considers Cheng and Cheng2 his closest friends -Is under so much pressure to make the family proud. Will end up going to Johns Hopkins and his dad will still think he could do better -Dad’s (black and white) side of the family is from Georgia/South Carolina area. Mom is Teochew (Chinese) from Singapore. The Singaporean is strong. Rutherford is almost completely fluent in Teochew -Cheng2's roommate and conscience
Cheng2
-Friends with everybody -Except Kavinsky, obvs -Look, no one is going to like this but I have a headcanon/AU thing where Cheng2 messed around with Prokopenko back when Cheng2 was going to substance parties and racing and that shit did not go good for either of them -Prone to saying stupid shit -Has a tendency to speak in a mixture of stupid frat boy, social media star, and SAT vocab list -When he’s really upset and/or angry, he slips into his native Appalachian (he grew up splitting his time between his bio dad and stepdad in Pigeon Forge and his not bio-dad in BC) -Mixed Chinese/white. The product of a biracial gay relationship, Cheng2′s bio-dad is white and his not bio-dad is Chinese. They searched a really long time to find the perfect egg donor. Then Cheng2′s bio-dad cheated on his husband when Cheng2 was five and now Cheng2 only sees his not bio-dad during the summer and on holidays. It’s a big story and no one at Aglionby cares (it’s not even close to the biggest amount of family drama to grace the halls, the Lynch clan’s not included) -Has a massive, completely obvious crush on Henry and a much less obvious crush on literally every other member of the Vancouver crowd. Is somewhat married to Rutherford -So good at Econ. So good. This boy is going to do great at Berkeley

shoutout to my followers
because honestly you’re all great
especially those who’ve been around for years
Like I logged onto deviantART for the first time in probably 3 years and I cringed
But some of you followed me here anyways in good faith
And that’s good
tumblr is my escape from all the Trump supporters on facebook
“why not delete facebook”
Well the few people on there I do like post good things
Some people don’t have Instagram, twitter, Snapchat, or tumblr.
And without FB messenger app, there are some people I’d never talk to even though I have their numbers
although deleting FB would solve the problem of telling everyone “don’t tell my mom I have FB ok”
“why not unfriend the Trump supporters?”
I removed the people vocal about it during the election, mainly because they were being extraordinary assholes (these celebs said they’ll leave the USA if Trump wins, so start packing CHER and SAMUEL L JACKSON and WHOOPI GOLDBERG!!!!) like whoa WTF those are some of my fav celebs man! Aside from being POC and supportive of Gay rights, what in the ever loving fuck did they do to you? Have you heard Cher sing? She’s a goddess. And movies without blacks would be lacking, like drinking watery chicken broth instead of awesome chicken noodle soup.
But the people I removed during election were coworkers who had quit and I never spoke to anymore anyways
Since then, coworkers have added me more (Guys please) and the Trump-ists all still work there. For the most part, I like my coworkers, and we have good times. Then I remember their “If you can fly your flag why cant I fly mine” and “share if you’re glad Obama’s gone” posts and it’s like a palpable shadow passes between us. Of course, they can’t tell despite my totally gay ass posts.
Like one guy, he and his mom both work there, and sometimes they give me and my mom rides to/from work. We all chat well at work even though some people dislike them for other reasons. They’ve had family fallout similar to ours, we all bitch about the boss, etc. But ....
Another woman, her son works there as well (I had/have a crush on him but he said no and we’re *awkward* friends now) but she and I chat all the time. I like her as a person, and as a mom, until...
Overall, Tennessee is a hard place to be if you’re a genuinely accepting person and I didn’t account for the racism when I moved here. But who could have predicted? I like most of the people in this town, I like the historic downtown and the closest big city. There’s Dollywood, and Nashville, and people really come together to take care of eachother (the fires at Pigeon Forge), and the scenery is breath taking. But thanks again to everyone I’m mutuals with, you guys post good things. xo
