Pedal To The Metal
Billy, a professional stunt driver agrees to take a generously paying gig from a photographer, who takes an interest in him after a friendly conversation on a resort rooftop.
R is for Revving (kink for watching someone rev an engine, especially when they wear heels)
This is the 18th fic in my Harringrove Kinktober ABCs
A series of 26 unrelated ficlets about Billy and Steve, each one written for a kink that starts with every letter of the alphabet.
@harringrovekinktober
Billy was taking a vacation. Finally, a much needed reprieve. He just wrapped up filming dozens of takes of stunt driving for a movie with an A-List cast. He got the opportunity to meet many actors that he admired, and he enjoyed himself on set.
It was a lovely time, but he needed to slow down for a day or 2, after weeks of driving at 150 miles per hour and going back to his hotel with migraines.
He booked a room at a resort in Times Square called Margaritaville. He didn’t expect to find something so peaceful in the big city, but it was everything he needed.
He scheduled a massage for his sore muscles and enjoyed some drinks on the rooftop deck.
He observed others as he lied back, sipping a fruity drink in-between his cigarette drags. There was an older couple, a woman, likely in her 50s and an attractive young man, probably in his age group, taking photos of the city.
The photographer sat a few feet away from Billy, returning to his own drink.
“View’s nice from up here, right?” He started a casual conversation with Billy.
“Yeah. Pretty nice.”
“You from around here?” The photographer asked.
“No. I was here for work.”
“Oh, so you wouldn’t happen to know how to get to Roosevelt Island, would you?”
“Oh, yeah. You can take the tramway. It’s like a sky taxi. Pretty cool, actually.”
“Thanks. What uh…what kind of work were you in town for?”
“I’m a stunt driver. I was on a movie set.”
“A stunt driver?!" He widely smiled. "No kidding. My name’s Steve, by the way. Steve Harrington.”
“Nice to meet you, Steve Harrington. I’m Billy. Billy Hargrove.”
They shook hands, smirking at one another.
“Hey, can I take photos of you for my portfolio? It’s a huge project and it pays well.”
“How well’re we talking?” Billy lifted his sunglasses.
“I’ll pay you $1,000 per photo.”
“Per photo?!” He exclaimed in disbelief. “Jesus Christ. I guess I can stay in town for another day or 2.”
“Awesome. So…can we meet up here tomorrow morning around 10?”
“Sure thing.”
“Also…what size shoe do you wear?”
“A 9.”
“Perfect. I’ll bring you some footwear for the photos. That cool?”
“Yeah. No problem.”
“Cool, cool. See you tomorrow!”
Billy finished off his drink, laughing to himself. “A thousand per photo? Must be my lucky day.”

Nobody Speaks To the Captain No More
Today, I learned Jimmy Buffett died.
I said a long time ago that Jimmy Buffett’s death was going to mess me up, and I thought that was said in earnest. Jimmy Buffett, if you’re not familiar, is was an American singer-songwriter from Mobile, Alabama, renowned for his involvement in and then kind of codifying the musical genre known as gulf and western. The sound, as I someone who just listens to it a lot, had a lot in common with country music in terms of its production style – there’s not a lot of distortion, instruments tend towards the acoustic rather than the electric, and you usually have a single vocalist, who’s often the author of the song presenting music that’s about a personal experience, in a kind of storytelling way. On the other hand, the association with the Gulf of Mexico meant that the musical instruments are influenced more by, well
Uh
Black people?
Kettle drums, hymnal organs, a range of percussion instruments that I don’t know by name, that kind of thing? Things you’d hear in the Caribbean, and that’s not to simplify the many different musical styles in the gulf, but to indicate the things that Gulf and Western picked up from it.
I wrote about Jimmy Buffett’s music, as expressed in the albums my dad had when I was a kid, across a few years. Between that and my other online statements about the inevitable impact of his death, I had three people approach me about The Bad News, and what that meant, and to check if I was okay. It made sense to me – after all, I’d said that would happen, right?
But I’m okay?
At least right now, as far as I know.
Weird.
When Kenny Rogers died, I immediately wrote an article and shared it that night, like this one is (probably) going to get. I don’t remember how I felt at the time but I feel like that was done in some strange fugue. I don’t remember why I felt it was important to do that — it wasn’t like I spoke about Kenny Rogers much. Maybe it was a need to try and do that, finally, while also doing my best to pick through the legacy of a man who I knew was aggressively mediocre in every way except in the way that an industry chose to elevate him. It wasn’t like Kenny Rogers was the author of his best song (since Don Schlitz wrote The Gambler, and that dude went on to write When You Say Nothing At All) or even the best performer on his best song (because he did Islands in the Stream with Dolly Parton, where he was essntially ballast).
I didn’t feel the need to do that to Jimmy Buffett. I think I’m well known as much as I have any kind of public identity as a dude in his early 40s whose taste in Jimmy Buffet is uh, forty years old. It was my dad’s music, it’s nostalgic to me, and broadly speaking considering Jimmy Buffett’s whole ouvre he didn’t do a lot to embarrass me. Jimmy Buffett respected the homeless, wanted to help the environment, was pro-shoplifting and performed with a lot of black artists and shared their music.
I don’t think that he was good, really. I mean, by the time he died, Jimmy Buffett was a billionaire, which means even in death, he was doing something great and ensuring a billionaire died. Bit of a reach there, I know.
But Jimmy Buffett seems to be primarily known as an embarassing presence. That corny guy, stoner humour, restaurant chain kinda dude. Even the involvement with My Brother, My Brother, and Me is a sort of jokingly ironic way, the way that liking Jimmy Buffett is something worth being teased over. Eddie Burbank did a whole video about trying to interrogate the idea of Jimmy Buffett entirely through the interface of visiting Margaritaville hotels and restaurant chains, which was painful and embarrassing, especially since you’re not about to get an incredible elaborate vision of a person’s philosophy from their ads trying to sell you margaritas. And I get it?
It’s weird, I just don’t feel the need to defend Jimmy Buffett. Dude wrote a bunch of songs I like. He wrote in a key I could sing. He performed in a style I could manage. He was The Good Boomer, of his sort, I guess.
I think part of it was that my entire life, Jimmy Buffett has been old. My earliest memories of him are of songs that relate to A Pirate Looks At Forty. He was my dad’s age, a little bit older, and that meant as my dad accommodated turning forty – as I am having to – he’s just always been there, like the long runway ahead of me, telling me that yeah, okay I’m getting older, but I’m… y’know, growing older, but not up.
He’s was just some guy.
He was, best I know, a pretty okay guy.
There’s this Achewood strip about how when your Michael Jackson dies, you realise in that moment that you’ll never be young again. I think that that doesn’t impact me in the same way, because I don’t have memories of ever being young, of being youthful. I have memories of this confused and stupid figure who was made up of the most superficial moments of social engagement from Christian media, falling down stairs of history on the way towards being a person, pre-emptively made into a crotchety, twee, smug old man in my teenage years.
I don’t feel like I’ll never be young again.
I’m mostly just worried about how this affects my dad.
Anyway, farewell to you, Jimmy Buffett. You made a bunch of my favourite songs, your words are written on my heart. You told me about the city where the dudes and the dykes all looked the same, you told me about the federalis who just grin and tell you that they want to be your friend, you told me about the name plate on the glass that brings back twenty memories. You told me about how to swipe shit ethically, you told me about how math suks and you taught me about the Hawaiian navy. You tried to get Americans to eat invasive species and you even made Alan Jackson momentarily tolerable.
I’ll miss him, but I don’t have to.

Jimmy Buffett’s “Gulf & Western” music has surfed the soundwaves with island escapism since 1973.
James William Buffett (December 25, 1946 – September 1, 2023) was an American singer-songwriter. He was known for his tropical rock sound and persona, which often portrayed a lifestyle described as "island escapism" and promoted enjoying life and following passions.
Jimmy Buffett’s “Gulf & Western” music has surfed the soundwaves with island escapism since 1973. Born into a long line of sailors, it was only natural that Buffett would be drawn to nautical themes, Caribbean rhythms and instrumentation, and the carefree life of a tropical troubadour. Introduced to Key West in the early 1970s by friend and Texas music icon Jerry Jeff Walker, Buffett moved to the Keys and began writing sunny songs that made everyone want to join him. His lyrics reflected his life – as a world traveler, pilot, and sailor, he wrote about his plane being shot at by Jamaican police (“Jamaica Mistaica”), getting lost in the Sahara Desert (“Buffet Hotel”), and smugglers he had known around the Florida Gulf Coast (“A Pirate Looks at 40”). Buffett’s tropical folk-rock sound is best exemplified by the songs he dubbed “The Big 8,” which included hits such as “Why Don’t We Get Drunk,” “Come Monday,” “Margaritaville,” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”
In 1975, Buffett formed the Coral Reefer Band, which would back him for his entire career. In 1985, then-band member Timothy Schmidt is credited with coining the nickname “Parrothead” for Buffett’s devoted fans, both as an homage to the “Deadhead” moniker used for Grateful Dead fans and a reference to the brightly-colored Hawaiian-style beach attire of Buffett’s audiences. The same year, Buffett began to grow his Parrothead lifestyle empire, which eventually included restaurant chains, bars, hotels, casinos, retirement communities, beverages, home goods, apparel, accessories, books, and even a musical.
The 2000s brought Buffett much acclaim. “Margaritaville” was included in the “Songs of the Century,” a list of 365 songs of historical significance selected by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. He won the Country Music Association Awards’ Vocal Event of the Year for his 2003 duet with Alan Jackson, “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” and in 2010, he was named the tenth biggest touring artist of the decade, with 4.5 million ticket sales over the previous 10 years.
Buffett’s influence can be heard in the mischievous humor and tropical vibes of hits from some of today’s country greats, including Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Zac Brown, Luke Bryan, and Dierks Bentley.

Time for your Rock Report
Steve Miller recently shared "Mama Church (A Cappella)," one of eight previously unreleased songs featured on J50: The Evolution of The Joker, a new box set honoring The Joker's 50th anniversary while chronicling the artistic journey that led to its creation. "Mama Church (A Cappella)" was recorded on a 4-track in a hotel room on April 21, 1972. J50: The Evolution of The Joker arrives via Sailor/Capitol/UMe on 2xCD, 3xLP + 7", as well as digital download and all DSPs and streaming services on Friday. The vinyl version includes a limited-edition lithograph and an exclusive reproduction of a vintage The Joker iron-on. Pre-orders are available now. Curated by Miller himself, J50 dives deep into the creative process of writing and assembling The Joker and amplifies its enduring magic by chronologically placing the original album tracks alongside 27 previously unreleased recordings from Miller's personal archive, including songwriting tapes made by Miller on his TEAC 4-track in hotel rooms on the road and at live performances, plus studio outtakes and rehearsals. The box set also includes six audio commentary tracks from Miller and exclusive liner notes from both Miller and legendary journalist Anthony DeCurtis. An official J50: The Evolution of The Joker trailer is streaming now at YouTube.
The Jimmy Buffett Estate has released three new songs from the late musician's forthcoming album, Equal Strain on All Parts. "Bubbles Up," "Like My Dog" and "My Gummie Just Kicked In" are available now digitally. The legendary singer-songwriter, known for his song "Margaritaville" along with his laid-back island style, passed away on September 1. He was 76. Buffett, who signed to Sun Records before his death, will have his final album, Equal Strain on All Parts, released later this year on November 3. The title is inspired by Buffett's grandfather's description of a good nap. The record, co-produced by longtime Coral Reefers, Michael Utley and Mac McAnally, features well-known friends, including Paul McCartney, Emmylou Harris, Lennie Gallant, Angelique Kidjo, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. "I was very happy to have played on one of his latest songs called 'My [Gummie] Just Kicked In'. We had a real fun session and he played me some of his new songs. One, in particular, I loved was the song, 'Bubbles Up.' And I told him that not only was the song great but the vocal was probably the best I've heard him sing ever," McCartney shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Margaritaville Lake Resort
Are you wanting to go on a tropical vacation?
Margaritaville Lake Resort is close to home and it is a place to take the family, to play, to relax, to reconnect, and to enjoy time on the lake. They just opened in the summer of 2020. This location brings the spirit of the Islands to the lake. This waterfront paradise will transport you straight to the tropics, with luxury suites, cottages, and a tempting array of amenities.
It is on 186 waterfront acres on the shores of Lake Conroe,TX. It is a beautiful, family friendly resort with a three acre water park, restaurants, golf course, mini golf, tennis court, pickleball, big fitness center, spa, boat rentals, and 80 boat slips for anyone bringing their own boat. Whether you’re seeking a romantic retreat, a fun-filled family getaway, or an all-inclusive group destination, they got you covered.
It was Spring Break and my birthday getaway in March. It was sunny and beautiful. The water was sparkling, and the wave of palm trees were beckoning you into your relaxing escape. The swimming pools would get busy midday, but there were still lounge chairs for everyone.
We stayed in a king-bed suite. If possible, get it on the highest floor that you can. We had an amazing view of the pools and lake. The suites are in the tower and have a bedroom, living room and really nice bathroom. The cottages have the same fixtures and furniture. Free self parking is available as well as paid valet.
The water park includes a lazy river with tubes included, splash zone, two water slides, hot tub and one heated pool. One pool is for adults-only. Everything else is open to all. In addition to the pools, there is a small beach with lake access. The fitness center is great too.
The food is always going to be the best part of any trip. Margaritaville provides plenty of options throughout the resort. Some of the resort restaurants are open to the public, but everything else requires a guest wristband to access.
At the resort you can rent equipment for the lake. They have Tritoon boats, electric paddle boats, stand up paddle boards, kayaks, fishing poles and bait.
There is shopping inside the resort and also nearby. If you forgot something, it's just a five minute drive to pick up some essentials in nearby shops.
The cottages give you your own little house. which is great for family or group. The cottages also have their own assigned parking spot and boat slip right outside.
Weekends are the busiest time. so if you can do a weekday staycation, you will probably have more space.
It was certainly a relaxing stay.
Plan your staycation. Check the Margaritaville website.
