The gay Denny’s burned down, allegedly due to a grease fire, which really sucks. It’s one of the top LGTBQI+ friendly spots in the Phoenix area, so I hope they reopen soon.

I still remember the first time I ate there with my two oldest kids when they were wee. My kids’ daycare was a few blocks away. I was looking around thinking, ‘Is it just me or are there a ton of gay people in here?’ and then chastised myself for making assumptions about people I don’t know. Later that evening, I mentioned it to a friend, who explained that it wasn’t just me, that the location is known locally as the gay Denny’s because it gets a lot of late-night business from the gay bars down the street.

There’s a Denny’s in Lakewood, Ohio, we used to go to after club concerts. That location is known as the punk rock Denny’s and if you ask anyone from Lakewood or the Northern Ohio punk/alternative scene about it, they’ll know exactly which Denny’s you mean. So I wasn’t even surprised that there’s a gay Denny’s and that everyone in Phoenix knows where it is if you mention it.

Nothing hits quite like Denny’s when you’re looking for after-party food. I always make it a point to tip the servers extremely well, especially the late-night servers. They put up with a lot of shit from drunken fools and cheapskates.
