@meloveanimeforreal7604 your ask glitched so I’m answering with a screenshot chchch
I actually have my own thoughts on their stats and how they changed under Nightmare
Killer is actually canonically shown to have 99999 LV, but later, Rahaf stated people can choose whichever LV they wanted for him, so it’s basically up for interpretation
Murder is canonically mostly at 19 LV, in some timelines, he reaches 20 LV
Horror has never been given a canon LV as far as I know (correct me if I’m wrong)
That being said, in my lil version of Nightmare, he has a “no killing unless necessary” rule, but generally, Nightmare can be a bit lenient if MTT resort to killing as long as it does not affect the negativity in a bad way
As in, if killing someone results in the negativity decreasing, than Nightmare would be pissed, but say if a monster was part of a family and their death resulted in a negativity increase due to their family’s grief, then Nightmare lets it slide
Nightmare only orders MTT not to go overboard with killing, his orders are usually within “Kill as many as necessary to generate a sufficient amount of negativity, otherwise, torture or terrorize”
Murder never ever kills anyone, nor does he tortures anyone, he usually hopes Nightmare would simply assign him a supply run job (which doesn’t always happen) and so if he were to do anything to help with negativity, he resorts to terrorizing only, as in just scaring people by blasting his gaster blaster in random directions, etc, but he never kills or tortures, these people are not part of his own AU, he has no business here, it causes him a lot of problems with Nightmare, but Murder prefers to deal with Nightmare’s abuse than live with more blood on his hands than necessary (I think you can already guess that Murder would deal with forced killing at some point no? >:) )
His stats are very Undertale like, they still follow the same formula and are pretty much uncorrupted, whenever anyone checks him, they get the exact same stats as you’d see in game, his LV stays on 19
Horror would simply follow Nightmare’s orders usually, sometimes during a bad mood swing he might end up killing people, but still stays within the limits of Nightmare’s rules, Horror is generally more responsible for torturing than killing, he’s sadistic af and finds joy in the screams of mercy when people plead for their lives (he might or might not cope with the rage brewing inside him from having to deal with Nightmare and his abuse by turning that rage to sadistic joy when torturing innocents)
His stats are semi-corrupted, his HP doesn’t show up at all, that is because Horror is technically already dead, from his head injury, therefore, his HP can no longer reflect him, his stats simply finds difficulty to assign a number to him, I like to think his LV is somewhere in the middle, not as high as Murder’s but not low either, but it definitely increased a few points after he started working under Nightmare
Killer doesn’t kill unless ordered to, he just tortures and terrorizes, he’s generally apathetic to people’s screams for mercy, only doing his job like the good killing machine he is, at stage 2, he does find his job “fun” but in a way that’s more thrilling to his restless dissociative mind and body then any actual joy, he’s curious and fascinated, not happy, he can’t latch onto his emotions at stage 2 anyway, but I think it’s clear that he carries so much guilt for it that’s only apparent when at stage 1
Killer’s stats are extremely messed up, they no longer truly reflect him at all, his stats are like a corrupted file, it isn’t working as it should be, his HP, AT and DF keep glitching and changing constantly, unable to truly settle on one single number, his 99999 LV would be the closest thing to “consistent” in reflection to him, but even then, it’s corrupted, glitching like the rest but still stays at 99999 LV
His LV doesn’t truly reflect his level of violence, but rather, his soul’s unnatural state, his Determination is way too excessive and his code is way too messed up
An HP can show you that it’s at 1, but no matter how much he’s hit he doesn’t die, or it could show you that it’s at 99 and he dies from one hit
In short, his stats aren’t to be taken on face value as they no longer truly reflect him beyond showing how messed up his state is
Nightmare doesn’t kill unless necessary or when he deems it in his interest, or in some cases, when anger takes the better of him, he finds sadistic joy in the misery of others and a sense of power that he just loves feeling, it makes him feel untouchable, unreachable, undeniably invincible, and by extension, it eases the constant fear of everything and everyone around him (something he’s in denial of)
Nightmare simply put, has no stats, he can be checked, but his stats are never going to be shown, he’s too much of an outcode for his stats to truly show anymore, not to mention, his state of being a semi-god, but the further someone is disconnected from their home, the more likely their stats aren’t going to show or be corrupted when shown, Nightmare falls under the “not shown” category (Killer’s stats’ corruption is also enhanced by his disconnection from his world)

I've always had a question regarding Handplates since it ended, Asgore never related the plates to Gaster? He kept a diary where he wrote everything about the skelebros and was intrigued by their past. It's not weird that the brothers had a plate with their dad's initials drilled into their hands? And if he made the connection, he simply decided not to push the issue further?
I thought about this, actually! I mean logically, you'd think Asgore would put the pieces together. I even wrote out several scripts following the idea, but in the end I didn't go for it. It'd be a long tangent at the end of the comic for one, but mostly because it just... didn't go anywhere. It dead-ends in an unsatisfying way where nothing really changes or gets resolved, so I just set it aside.
You're on the right track about him deciding not to push it! But basically I figured, if Asgore came and asked...
Gaster: he wouldn't tell him, in part because he's afraid of how Asgore would react and doesn't want to lose him, but also because he doesn't want to talk about something that personal to the brothers without their permission. Especially after Sans told him that he didn't want him to talk about what happened to them with anyone else! He'd probably talk around the issue, if he didn't outright lie about not knowing, and point Asgore in the brothers' direction so they could decide for themselves if they wanted him to know.
Sans: Already said he doesn't want anyone to know about what happened. 1-S is dead. He'd fend off any questions Asgore asked with silly joke answers and completely stonewall him on it.
Papyrus: Also doesn't like talking about "that stuff" with other people, and didn't like the pitying looks that Asgore gave him about his scars. He's with Sans in wanting to move on after what happened, and he also wants to keep Gaster in good standing with everyone and in a healthy living situation with Asgore. He'd fend off the questions in a way that'd make it clear that he was uncomfortable with the issue (much like how he fended off the kid's back at the beginning) and I feel like Asgore would sense that it's an uncomfortable topic and not press too hard.
So while Asgore might be suspicious and might figure out that the plates and Gaster are connected, none of the skeletons would actually tell him or explain anything about it, and since they've told no one else about what happened and no one remembers it, there's no real other source of information about it anywhere. So Asgore ends up empty-handed, and the reader would likewise feel disappointed that the whole thing ended up going nowhere. It'd just feel like a waste of time, I think, especially so close to the end of the story.
It is something I thought about though! Probably something better left for a fic or something, really...
[index]
#asks and answers#russlanbf#handplates#gerson already forgot about the plates lol#the brothers also don't let other people see the plates in general so not many people know they have them#i guess the skelefamily might get together to decide on a cover story together but the end result is still the same

So was rewatching Othertale: Before the Hack (part 1) a few days ago and posting about it, which you can find here, and i was taking notes as i did.
You can also find the link to my analysis of the [caring] animation here, and my analysis of the [experiment] animation here and here.
And happy 9th birthday to both Othertale, and Color Sans!
“Undyne, or Ivory, comes from an AU called Othertale. She can play piano and has a nice sense of music, but can’t sing. She’s much weaker than her Undertale counterpart.
In this AU, Sans never existed (aside from a mysterious sock in the house that Undyne and Papyrus eventually move in to.)
And instead, Undyne—an orphaned street kid blind in one eye with her red hair in a braid—starts looking after an even younger orphaned kid named Papyrus from bullies and thieves. Before eventually, the two decide to stick together as siblings.
Due to being more focused on looking after and raising Papyrus, Undyne does not have any goals to join the Royal Guard or free the Underground or capture any humans.
She cares more about her little brother than anything, and even uses piano skills to eventually become something of a celebrity for the Underground while Papyrus goes on to become a math teacher.
Othertale Undyne grows up in a universe where Sans doesn’t exist, Papyrus is her younger adoptive brother, and she had to work to keep herself and her brother alive.
Using her skills in piano playing to perform concerts, she earns enough to get herself and her brother off the streets.
She seems to take this very seriously, such as being nervous and not sleeping, staying up all night practicing. Especially since she’s become so well know that even King Asgore and Gerson Head of the Royal Guard would be there.
Neither she nor Papyrus have plans to join the Royal Guard, so Gerson is still the captain of the Royal Guard.
Neither Papyrus nor Undyne have any official training, although Undyne and the Royal Scientist Alphys are still love interests—with Alpyhs being Papyrus’ Undernet friend, and appearing to have a celebrity crush on Undyne—even giving her a gift for her big concert.
Because the six human souls also don’t exist in Othertale, breaking the barrier isn’t possible. Mettaton operates more like a living weapon than a star, and the amalgamates don’t exist either. Although Flowey still does.
In the present day of Othertale, many monsters have mysteriously been going missing; with the King himself having to speak on the issue.
It is unclear if Undyne is any concerned about this, given how she readily goes on walks alone with Alphys and was eager to explore an abandoned sentry station that showed up out of nowhere when she heard someone calling her name from it.
One day, however, Undyne is lured into the Void through a sentry station; she hears someone calling her name but no one else can hear it. She decides to immediately go exploring because she wants to have fun. She is rather pushy when Alphys is too scared to go in and explore, but ultimately doesn’t force the other woman to go in.
But inside she is confronted by Gaster and Sans/Color!Sans. She doesn’t understand what’s going on, but is knocked out by a magic fueled punch by Color that transfers some of Color’s “soul power” into her, which opened Undyne’s “blind eye.”
Ivory is not afraid to defend herself; not hesitant at all to summon one of her spears and point it at Gaster when he advances on her, warning him to stay back or else she will hurt him. Although she only does this when he attempts to make a move towards her.
She seems very very nervous about her concert, and she doesn’t seem to have been ready for the level of attention and popularity her skills brought her.
Due to her magic eye that Color unlocked, she seems able to immediately tell if there’s danger nearby; like a warning, perhaps from Color himself. She seems to trust her instincts a lot, immediately ditching her big concert and audience to follow her gut and run straight into danger.
When she finds Alphys injured, she’s furious and fiercely protective; demanding to know who did it in a low growling tone.
Once making sure Alphys is okay, her immediate concern after is her brother and his safety. But rather than immediately running off and abandoning Alphys, she expresses this to her—and after getting reassurance that the other woman is okay and understands, she gives Alphys a tight hug before running off after Papyrus.
As soon as she finds and protects Papyrus, she orders her brother to run and get help while she fights off against the other monster attacking him on her own.
She’s able to shortcut a lot like Sans is able to now. Her eye glows like Sans’ did, only yellow this time. Her fish ears/gills pin back when she’s scared.
When she gains her second form, her hair is chopped off to what appears to be about ear length. Her spears are stronger and longer, and she has her own Gaster Blasters.
She dresses like an Underfell Undyne in this form—and she wears a heart shaped golden necklace with the letter “f” on it.
We don’t know where she got it, what it means, who it came from—but it was said to be a gift from someone.”
^ the images I am referring to. (All art by superyoumna.)
This part is in reference to the [experiment] short, and the brother & sister comic.
Before Gaster jumped into the Core and Sans was forgotten in the Void to create Othertale, back when the universe was still Undertale—this universe seems to subscribe to the idea that both Sans and Undyne’s magical eyes were due to experiments by Dr. Gaster.
Sans says that Dr. Gaster made a mistake when giving him his eye, that it made Sans’ body extremely unstable and fragile—and possibly more, although Sans doesn’t seem to hold it against Gaster even when Gaster holds it against himself.
Sans reassures Undyne that Gaster won’t make that same mistake with her, but when the experiment finally works and Undyne is able to see from her fake eye, Gaster immediately tells Sans to remove the soul energy or it would damage Undyne’s body.
Undyne during this flashback seems to be around 5, while Papyrus is at most 1-2, and Sans seems to be in his late teens to early 20s. When Sans is pulled into the Void and the world is rewritten to forget Sans and make Othertale, Ivory’s eye is blind again and later needs to be reactivated by Color transferring his soul energy back to her.
All a part of Color and Shade’s plan to empower Ivory with knowledge and power so she can fight against the impending threat, since Color and Shade cannot leave the Void without the risk of dying.
Despite how Ivory and Shade’s meeting in Othertale’s Void is confronting and wary, in the past, child Undyne seemed to find comfort in Gaster and trusted him a lot—such as wanting him to share in her happiness, being worried about him when he leaves in frustration, and saying that the lab is spooky without him around.
As a child after Sans is forgotten, however, it appears little Ivory met little Sage sometime after an event just referred to as “the explosion.” And ever since then, Sage only ever sought Ivory out whenever the other children would steal from and bully him—and Ivory would beat up the bullies for him and get his stuff back.
One day, while searching for a rubix cube in the garbage dumps, a frantic and crying Sage runs up to Ivory to tell her that the others kids stole his toy car.
Ivory notes that he only ever comes to her when he needs protection. Sage immediately apologizes for this, but Ivory quickly corrects herself as that wasn’t what she meant—this is the moment where Ivory proposes that Sage stick with her instead of surviving on his own.
Sage is reluctant to accept because even though they are friends, they are still strangers. In answer to this, Ivory gives Sage her rubix cube and loudly states that they are neither friends nor strangers—instead they are siblings.
Sage immediately gets excited by this idea, and the two proudly and loudly declare that they are siblings—and Sage promises to always look up to her and support her as his big sister and as the “great Papyrus!”

GENERAL INFO
What is 'SOUL collectors'? (and why is it called that?)
SOUL Collectors is an Undertale multiverse for several different Undertale OCs I have created.
A collection of their interactions with each other, the multiverse, and their arcs into achieving their wants or needs.
It's also sometimes Open to Asks towards or about the characters!
basically my sandbox for ideas and OCs lmao-
SOUL Collectors is a passion project that only has me, @pathosketches working on it, It doesn't have a specific schedule for posting and not everything is set in stone, I'm only having fun here :]
SOUL Collectors is also the name that Soul (the guy from the poster) dubs himself as being one, seemingly able to literally 'collect' SOULs.
what makes this Multiverse special? (Why do SOULs look like that?)
The SOUL Collectors MV has a special 'glitch' that appears in some timelines after a run has ended (pacifist, neutral, or genocide) that gives the fallen 6 Human SOULs shape and prevents them from being shattered.
They’re called Anomaly SOULs.
BASIC INFO ABOUT ANOMALY SOULS
(From part 1 [5])
You'll learn about them and how they work from the story as it progresses and from Asks-
How many 'Stories' are there? (what is Maker timeline?)
SC has two main 'stories':
'SOUL collectors' itself.
'SOUL collectors: Maker timeline' a subplot/Secondary story that takes place before the events of SC. It (mainly) follows a Gaster variant that learned of his inevitable "fall" into the CORE and how that affected him and his timeline.
'SC: Maker timeline' will usually be drawn in a 'sketchy' style :)
Can I draw the SC cast with my ocs? / Can I draw the SC cast?
Yes!! absolutely!! Any art made of my silly characters would make my day!! and interactions with ocs are so much fun to see!!
Just remember to be respectful! (No NSFW/excessive gore/weird things/etc-)
(This post may be updated in the future, I hope you come to enjoy the freaks I created ˘͈ᵕ˘͈)

made a fun little design for gaster while he was alive bc of a discord conversation
him being an egg has layers n shit because 1. it implies a connection to the skelebros because bones and eggshells are both made of calcium 2. i felt like the cracks in the mysteryman sprite would work really well with the concept 3. the egghead pun was way too good to pass up 4. the whole thing with the man in deltarune
i like the idea that he was just a fucking dork at one point before being consumed by his experiments and having a massive shift in personality
(also the gaster followers were his assistants yes yes!)

question: in the AU does Frisk stay with Toriel or go on their own post-pacifist?
another question: did Frisk ever run into the Gaster Followers during their time in the Underground? if so, have they ever asked about Wingdings to any of the monster, mainly to either Asgore or Alphys?
1- Frisk stayed with Toriel :D
2- Nope, this Frisk specifically did a pretty average run of the game, they didn't run into many secrets

THE MAGIC CIRCLE, or "WTF is Darkness, anyway?"
Part Three
A comprehensive, themes-first take on what Deltarune is "really about"
The Gaster of it all
The foremost trouble with Gaster is that there just isn’t very much to work with. We know so little about the guy that we couldn’t even figure out if a certain Valentine’s Day letter was or wasn’t from him. And since we know such little concrete information about Gaster, some might argue that trying to conjecture one’s way towards grand conclusions about him is a fool’s errand. Luckily (or unluckily) for you, dear reader, a fool is exactly what I am.
All joking aside, I do actually want to try my best to be cautious in this section. Since Gaster is someone who exists just as much outside the text as he does within it, any theory involving him risks mixing evidence with unsubstantiated fanon interpretations. For this reason, I will try to specifically list every premise that I need to come to my conclusion, so we can be on the lookout, together, for any pesky leaps in logic. Make up your own mind on whether these are all within the bounds of reason, or whether there’s something here that you can’t accept or find implausible.
Premise 1: We can use information about Gaster in Undertale to inform our understanding of Gaster in Deltarune. Given that every known character that exists across both Undertale and Deltarune share not only similar personalities but also broadly similar circumstances, it seems like a safe assumption that the same applies to Gaster.
Premise 2: The information the Gaster followers give us can be trusted. This is to say that Gaster was the former royal scientist, that he was shattered across time and space, and that he exists at some higher level where he can “listen in” or watch during gameplay despite not physically being present. If we don’t trust the information of the Gaster followers, there's barely any discussion to be had, as these are some of the only sources of information we have about him. We don’t have any reason to distrust their claims, so they can be taken on faith for now.
Premise 3: Entry 17 was written by Gaster. The room displaying Entry 17 is literally named room_gaster in the files of the game.
Premise 4: The subject of Entry 17 is the substance of Darkness, as seen in Deltarune. Gaster literally refers to the subject of his experimentation as “Darkness”.
Premise 5: Gaster is the mysterious person talking to us during the opening of Deltarune. There are numerous allusions to Gaster during this opening scene, such as the track which plays during it being titled ANOTHER HIM, a reference to an Undertale file tied to Gaster. The person speaking also shares Gaster’s exact manner of speech and verbal tics, minus the Wingdings font.
Premise 6: Deltarune Gaster exists in a similar state to his Undertale counterpart. The Gaster who speaks with us in Deltarune is a disembodied voice who is somehow able to communicate with us, the player, and seems to exist diegetically as part of the menus. A reasonable explanation for this would be him also being shattered across time and space and occupying a higher plane of "reality".
Premise 7: Gaster’s experimenting with Darkness is what led to him being shattered across time and space and existing in this higher state. What else could the relevance of Entry 17 possibly be? The fact that you need to manipulate time and space to even access the room displaying it seems to point clearly towards this conclusion. As discussed earlier, Dark Worlds seem to behave strangely when it comes to time and space as well.
Premise 8: Darkness is a metaphysical substance that somehow dictates the nature of Undertale and Deltarune's worlds. If Darkness caused Gaster to become a disembodied being able to exist within the menus and code of the game, then this must surely mean that Darkness is tied to the very fabric of reality that makes up the worlds of Undertale and Deltarune.
With all of our premises established, I can now make what might, devoid of context, seem like an insane claim, but which follows quite naturally from the premises outlined here.
Conclusion: The Light World is actually a Dark World
Okay, what does that even mean?
Well, think about how in Chapter 2, Queen planned on making a Dark World inside a Dark World. What if she’s already inside a Dark World inside a Dark World? If sufficient manipulation of Darkness can shatter one’s embodiment in time and space, placing oneself on a higher or deeper plane of reality, then what that seems to point to is that Darkness simply is the substance that makes up the reality of Deltarune and Undertale. And if that’s the case, it means that the Light World is essentially just a very big Dark World.
The beauty of this hypothesis is that it makes perfect sense thematically. Deltarune and Undertale are fictional worlds where, like in the Dark Worlds, certain characters are aware of their own nature as fictional beings – characters like Gaster. And really, Gaster is exactly like the secret bosses in that he’s not free even in his own confrontation with his lack of freedom. Like how the Will of the Fountain guided Jevil and Spamton towards their reckoning with their nature as Darkners, the Will of Toby Fox guided Gaster towards a reckoning with his own nature as a fictional character. This is why Gaster, and possibly Dess, exist diegetically within the code of the game. Here in our world, the code is what forms the existence of Deltarune (the program). But once you immerse yourself in Deltarune (the fictional world), crossing its Fountain (so to speak) via your suspension of disbelief, the code becomes representative of something else – the “Depths”, a deeper layer within the cosmological fabric of Darkness.
Armed with a basic understanding of Deltarune’s cosmology, we are prepared to tackle the question of who and what the Angel is.
The Angel is in their Heaven, all is right with the world
Let me pose you a question. If Darkness represents fiction, what does Light represent? Because Light is an established concept in Deltarune. It’s not mentioned quite as much as Darkness, but it’s right there in the name of the “Light World” and “Lightners”. Darkners talk about the light inside Kris’s soul, which also makes an appearance in the lyrics of Don’t Forget.
So, what is Light? Well, if you’re on board with the conclusion that Darkness represents fiction, I think there is no choice but to accept that Light, as its opposite, represents reality. Or, at least reality in relation to fiction.
Deltarune seems to operate on a certain hierarchy of command. There are Darkners, who, as Ralsei is eager to remind us, are subservient to Lightners. But Lightners themselves seem to be subservient to an even higher force, one that shines more radiantly… A figure that is, funnily enough, shrouded in darkness. Their Heaven is only briefly mentioned at the end of Ralsei’s prophecy. They’re worshipped as a monotheistic God in the organized religion of Light World’s Hometown. And Spamton yearns to confront them, hoping it will allow him to cut his strings. In fact, Spamton seems to think they’re already present and addresses them directly in dialogue, asking if they’re watching.
This hierarchy of command maps out perfectly to the metatextual layers of Deltarune. Darkners are fictional beings within the fictional world of Deltarune and so occupy the lowest level of this hierarchy, worshipping their creators, the Lightners. Notice that “Lightners” is plural – Darkners don’t just worship the individual creator of their Fountain, they worship Lightners in general because it’s only through them, collectively, that they can exist. And who are the creators of the Lightners? Well, it’s us, right? We’re the beings one rung up the ladder. We’re the ones who “give their existence meaning”. Granted, Lightners worship an individual being, the Angel, instead of a category of beings. I think this is fairly easy to explain, though.
The world of Deltarune is made in service of the player. It is for the player’s sake that the game is designed as it is. Even if Toby Fox operates in a sort of demiurgic role of actually having to construct the game and the narrative for us, it is ultimately we who are the God of this world. We, the player, are the Angel.
I can already hear the question forming in your mind: “But what about Noelle? Isn’t she the Angel?” I mean, she does literally compare herself to one. And an Addison calls her one. And Spamton calls her one. And she's associated with snow angels. And the doll her and Dess create looks like an angel. And her Dark World attire is very angelic too. Is there any possible explanation for this other than Noelle being the Angel?
Noelle is certainly associated with angelic imagery and language, as all the examples above indicate. But take note that whenever she’s associated with angels, it’s in the lower case, referring to angels abstractly. Not once is she directly associated with the capital-A Angel. What seems clear to me is that Noelle is a special Lightner, with a special connection to the Angel, which is to say a special connection with us. This is made clear in the Weird Route, where we can use Noelle to “break” the game, bypass certain restrictions, disregard what’s “supposed” to happen and forge a new path, in a twisted reflection of Noelle’s own interest in video game glitches and creepypastas.
But really, when you think about it, Noelle being the actual Angel is kind of an incoherent notion in the first place. Even beyond the thematic significance of Light, we know what the Angel is, broadly speaking. It is a watchful deity existing above the Lightners and Darkners – this much is clear from how both Lightners refer to them, and from how Darkners like Spamton do. There is simply no explanation for how Spamton could be referring to Noelle when he talks about the Angel.
If you’re already convinced that she’s the Angel, this dialogue might mislead you into thinking Spamton is referring to Noelle. But on further inspection it’s quite obvious from context that Spamton is referring to the one who’s actually looking for the ring – us, the player. Immediately proceeding this dialogue, he asks us (the player - or Kris, who we're controlling) to pay for the ring. It plainly does not make sense for the dialogue to be addressed to Noelle.
Likewise, you’d have to jump through a lot of hoops to interpret this as anything other than Spamton directly addressing the Angel’s Heaven, which he believes is observing his current actions (as opposed to many Noelle Angel theories which speculate that the Angel's Heaven will be not a literal, but abstract concept corresponding to a future Dark World, or even the Roaring itself, at any rate caused by Noelle). But this naturally leads us to the question of what exactly the Angel’s Heaven is.
From what Spamton says, and from its description in the prophecy, it seems that the Angel’s Heaven refers to an actual, tangible location or plane of existence. Given that, I think it makes intuitive sense that the Angel’s Heaven is simply our world – the world above the Light World, the Even Lighter World so to speak, the home of angels and divine light. This is how Heaven can be “watching”, as Spamton says.
Banishing the Angel’s Heaven – the goal of the prophecy – would thus mean, well, sealing away the real world and severing the connection that was established at the beginning of the game, which is just a more complicated way of saying that it refers to ending the game. As explained earlier, Deltarune is itself a sort of Dark Fountain, a constructed world filled with characters prepackaged in certain contexts that we’re meant to enjoy and bring meaning and resolution to. The primary difference seems to be that within the story of Deltarune, this “Fountain” (if you will) was opened from the inside, by none other than Gaster, our gracious host, and must thus be banished from the inside as well, by the Delta Warriors of Legend.
I believe that this is the ending that Toby has teased, the conclusion that he dreamed of nearly 14 years ago. As the boundaries between the player and the game gradually break down, so will the boundaries between the Light and Dark Worlds within the game's diegesis, culminating in the Roaring, which I fully expect to be represented through overt meta-awareness and glitch aesthetics, similar to Undertale’s endings. What else would an apocalypse look like within the metaphysics of a video game program, after all, but a fatal exception error? The Roaring is the edge of the shadow, where reality and dream meet. And to bring an end to the Roaring, that connection must be severed.
In conclusion…
Deltarune’s narrative, like Undertale before it, is highly concentrated on a metatextual exploration of fiction and the impact it can have on people’s lives. The crucial difference is that where this was mostly relegated to subtext in Undertale, Deltarune is overtly grappling with these ideas through its plot. Not only with the metaphorically loaded nature of the Dark Worlds which serve as the backdrops to the adventures of our characters, but also with the player character themselves, their outright awareness and rejection of the player controlling them, and the ways in which those complicated feelings manifest in the Dark Worlds generated from their Will.
In this way, Deltarune is not only interested in exploring the impact of fiction on the lives of its creators but also the impact of reality on fictional constructs, which in turn reflects our own real world struggles to make sense of our place in an incomprehensible world which may or may not be created by a higher being.
A proper understanding of the thematic preoccupations of a text can open up new avenues of speculation and focus one’s sight on the things that truly matter the most. In this essay, I offered answers to some of the most pressing questions in the community, such as the identity of the Knight, the mechanics of Dark Worlds, the nature of the Secret Bosses, the identity of the Angel, and the significance of their Heaven, but I think more important than any answers to those mysteries in themselves is how they connect and tie into the central themes of the narrative.
By no means do I expect all of my conclusions to be completely correct, having less than a third of the full game to work with, but I do at least think they’re in line with the established themes it's been exploring, and well supported by the textual evidence we’ve been provided with so far. I’m eager to hear my ideas picked apart and criticized, and even more eager to get my hands on Chapter 3 and 4 – even if it ends up invalidating every conclusion I put forth here. Ultimately our theories should not exist for the sake of establishing or perpetuating arbitrary divisions, or to further our own profile as independent theorists, but to attain a better understanding of the narrative we’re being presented with. To that end, I can only hope I was successful.

Merry Gyftmas!
Howdy! Merry Gyftmas, & a happy holidays to all those who celebrate! As a gift, I've gathered some fics that should be centered around this wintertime tradition!
Our First Gyftmas (2022) by SXH1417 (General Audiences, Complete)
It's their first Gyftmas all together. The twins haven't been with them for long, but they wanted everything to be perfect for them! For Huxley <3
Robin's Nest by EmeraldHaze15 (Teen And Up, Incomplete)
Surely a Bitty should be for life, not just for Gyftmas? You had serious doubts on whether it was the wisest thing for your neighbours to get their young son a Bitty for Gyftmas. Especially a sensitive Cherry type...
Why You Shouldn't Follow Your Twin Brother Into the Basement by TheWeirdestRoller (General Audiences, Incomplete)
It's December 20th. Dream wants to see what gifts he got. Nightmare, is more than a bit against it. But their birthday is tomorrow. So, they should be allowed to look, right?
holidays, holidaze by cinnabun (General Audiences, Complete)
It’s beginning to look a lot like Gyftmas. What starts off as a perfectly calm day quickly takes a turn for the worse. Then the better. Then the sillier. Well, it is the holidays, after all.
I'll Be Home For Gyftmas by perniciousLizard (General Audiences, Complete)
Papyrus has no idea what to get his newly-returned father Gaster for Gyftmas. Undyne decides to help him pick the perfect gift. When the two of them are out on the town, they run into Gaster on a date with Grillby and realize they have a great opportunity to puzzle out the ideal gift.
A Date to Remember by Nanenna (Teen And Up, Complete)
Papyrus sees an online ad for a holiday fake date, he decides this would be the perfect jape! The whole family is supposed to gather at his parents' house this year, why not throw in a fun jape while they're at it. But a sudden change in the family's plans throws a wrench into the whole thing. Well, at least some good came of this disaster, who knew his brother and his fake date were so compatible?
Define "Cute" by ReadWithDetermination (Teen And Up, Complete)
Mutt seems to have a problem with Edge, and it possibly has to do with the way he is warding Papyrus off from giving everyone food poisoning for Gyftmas. At least, that's how it seems to Edge. Too bad everyone but Edge is oblivious to the truth. (Intended as a Gyftmas fic for Skeleshipper, but now, it's more of a New Year's gift. My bad~)
The Storm Within by Snakehands (Teen And Up, Complete)
My Gyftmas gift to Alennyah Prompts were: 1. Cherryberry (Fell Sans and Swap Sans) spending the night together on a sleigh ride. 2. Spicyhoney (Fell Papyrus and Swap Papyrus) Enjoying a bit of hot cocoa during a blizzard. 3. Kustard (Undertale Sans and Fell Sans) Sans comforting Red after a bad nightmare. I attempted to touch on all three in this oneshot. Originally this was meant to be funny but it got a little more serious in the middle than I expected. I had fun writing it, though. In a new world that feels very strange to him, a small skeleton named Red struggles to find his place above ground after a life spent in the shadows. One source of happiness in his life is Sans, his charming and mischievous partner who brings warmth and laughter to Red's tumultuous existence. As they discuss a romantic date, Red confronts his fears and insecurities, leading to a heart-stopping nightmare that threatens to unravel everything he holds dear. With love and trust on the line, can Red find the strength to embrace his new reality, or will the sins of his past consume him? Join Red and Sans in this tale of romance, self-discovery and the power of love.
I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus by andreabandrea (General Audiences, Complete)
"I was... his Santa. He was... my Rudolph." Asgore and Rudy share time together. Noelle gets a Gyftmas wish. | Request for uselessundertalefacts
Blinking Lights by perniciousLizard (Teen And Up, Complete)
It's Sans' first Gyftmas dating both Toriel and Grillby. It’s time to start some new traditions.
