The word 'rural' is in the public consciousness again and every time people start going in about the 'rural values' 'rural way of life' I remember just how subjective that word is.

I have a friend that lives in LA. He considers Columbus, OH to be 'rural.' A population of over 900k. Thriving arts community, tons of culture festivals, every kind of restaurant you can think of, one of the most annoying college campuses ever, several smaller colleges, lots of queer spaces, comic book conventions, huge concerts... rural.

The town I live in considers itself 'rural.' 38k population. Arts festival every year, a small pride celebration, monthly gallery hop, big Halloween festival. Five ice cream shops, three coffee shops, a couple fancy bars, so many grocery stores. Huge library, conservation and sustainability advocates, queer spaces, a hospital, one private college. Rural.

The town we nearly annexed, but lost the deal considers us 'urban' compared to them. Less than 5k. They have a limited hospital, often send their surgeries here. Downtown has hardware store, bars, craft supply store, a couple grocery stores, pizza places. There's some farmland, but much of the square acreage is golf. Mega churches. The houses here are 500k. Most people drive ATVs. They have a handful of festivals in the summer.

A town I would often get sent to to cover their high school sports- a little over 2k. There's a Subway, a Domino's, Family Dollar. Some bars, some corner stores. Some local crafts. All the students grow up knowing each other, most of them stay there. But they have craft fairs and art galleries, still.

Less rural still than the town I go through to get there, population of around 600. Houses, farmland, post office, general store.

Who would still look down upon the town of about 400 that I would go to sometimes- post office. Gas station. Bar. The school is the only big thing there.

And yet still, I have seen towns with population in the double digits that have a church and a post office.

Even just looking at the numbers doesn't lend accuracy to what 'rural' actually looks like. Because this is what it looks like in ohio, but it's different in West Virginia- where your closest neighbor might be a mile down a hill. Or in Montana, where your town might be planned very tightly and your neighbors are very close, but the nearest grocery store is an hour and a half away. These are places I've been, friends that I've talked to. I've never been to Missouri or Alabama or Louisiana- I'm sure they have a unique experience of being 'rural.'

So my point is that when people talk about 'the rural experience' or 'rural values,' they are talking about millions of people across the entire country who all have lived unique lives- and who may not even agree on what 'rural' is.

Think about who is talking, and who is being talked over, and who isn't even being asked to join the conversation.

Now, this property is really something different. It's licensed for an ATV Park and has approx. 37 miles of active trails running throughout. Structures on the property include a check-in Pavilion/Office, Observation Deck, rain shelters, Zip-line platform, and a sky cabin/chalet which includes 4 separate move-in/rent-ready apartments. Built in 2010, the Fairmount, GA property has 6bds, 4ba, & is listed for $10M.

Can you imagine owning and operating this place? I guess this is a lookout, or picnic deck? Bandstand? Could be anything.

Y/n story: they always wanted a greenhouse, grew plants all the time. Their godparents had land in Arizona, and they had surrounding land that hadn’t been bought yet. Y/n decided to buy it once they were older, and they have the land now, 3 acres, plus the two acres from her godparents that she used to build her house on.In her house she had a ton of plants, it is somewhat small but cosy, she has a giant garage for robotics and stuff since she had always wanted to work with that, and they make small little guys similar to helpy. Once they begin construction on their land they start looking for workers, there was going to be the main greenhouse area which they would tend to, a restaurant in the center, a small daycare for kids of adults who wanted to go to relax, and a small cafe, all inside the giant greenhouse. They start looking when someone catches their attention, they went out on a ride with their cousins on ATV’s and found robot parts by the mountains, that seemed to be mostly intact, they looked like the sun almost, and considering every time y/n found machine parts they would take them, they decided this time would be no different, they place the animatronic in their lap and continue their ride as per usual, and going fast over the bumpy parts of the dirt makeshift road because that is always fun. Once they make it back to the land, they show their find to their godparents, who are thrilled! And their cousins are excited too. They take them to their garage with the help of their godfamily and get to work on fixing up some damaged wires and cables, and also cleaning up the shell and endo skeleton. The animatronic seems yellow, like the sun, it reminds them of something but they can’t place it. Then they turn it on and shenanigans ensue.

Y/n behavior: Nice, assertive, loves doing fun or dangerous stuff(ridding atv’s at 60 mph on dirt paths on the mountain) but also loves arts and crafts, is good with kids but never wanted them, which is why the greenhouse has a daycare, like to joke around a lot, and hanging out with their cousins even if they make fun of them sometimes, they have a ton of hobbies like sewing, crocheting, 3d printing, drawing, building crafts out of cardboard, 3d modeling, and building with legos.

Y/n appearance: is often seen wearing gardening clothes, a sun hat, or mechanic clothes and a bandana(that they made by crocheting it)

Y/n likes: doing crafts, dangerous things like riding the atv’s, having fun, relaxing, robots, sun/moon, learning about psychology, always 3d printing stuff, playing Mexican music over the greenhouse speakers(like la flaca) especially in the restaurant,

They had a piñata one day to celebrate Christmas and a hook was sticking out, so y/n gets a small gash on their hand (horizontal from the base of their thumb to the other side of the hand(no this is not very specific wdym)) while blindfolded and going at it on the piñata. (Yea y/n is sorta Hispanic I’m sorry but it’s so fun to write that stuff)

I had a gt themed dream last night and it was so cool!! So u know i had to type it up so i could share it

Tw for mentions of violence against tinies, mentions of tinies being held captive by humans, swear words, i think thats it

Basically in the dream there was a mixed size society with three sizes, borrowers (they were like 6-8inch tall), humans (human size lol), and giants (50ish feet tall).

The world was theoretically mixed size but the sizes actually mixing was more complicated in practice bc humans and giants had their own countries while borrowers just kind tried to live amongst them or in communities in the wilderness, and they were known of but not usually treated very well. There were a couple of cities that were more size inclusive tho where all three species lived in something closer to harmony.

But then humans kept like developing more of the wilderness and also kept pushing boundaries by the giants land so there was some unrest and speculation of conflict in the near future between the humans and the giants, while the borrowers were forced to live amongst humans more so

I was a borrower and not lucky enough to live in to have been born in a mixed size city, instead my family lived in a small community in a forest. I wanted to meet humans and giants tho, but then I got my wish bc humans (they were yt ppl ofc) decided to start building into the forest and build a town next to the borrower community and then humans started coming over and were supposedly “friendly” and wanted to share the forest but they clearly weren’t actually. Younger humans would come over and play “pranks” and generally be disrespectful and borrowers started going missing and there were rumors that humans were kidnapping them for who knows what reasons (theories were like they wanted to scare off the other borrowers or human (borrower ig) trafficking).

My borrower family and some of our close friends decided we were going to move to this bigger mixed size city, but while doing so, I got separated from them after humans showed up and started chasing our vehicles. The car/atv thing (borrowers had sort of atv like vehicles) that I was driving crashed into this river. I got washed downstream and didn’t know what happened to my family or where I was. I climbed out kf the river and found I was by these orchards and deep in human territory so I was like Well Shit and was trying to figure out what to do. I eventually decided to try to follow the river bc I was like it’s gotta go somewhere. I did so for the next day, and set up a makeshift camp across from it that night.

The next morning, I was still in the orchards. I started walking again and ran into these two other borrowers who said they’d been held captive by humans and were trying to escape, but now the humans were hunting them w/ dogs. So we all started trying to escape together. UNFORTUNATELY we got cornered by one of the humans and his dog. I tried to distract them while the other two borrowers got away. They did, but the dog grabbed me. I managed to get free and hide in a drainage pipe, and I was fine other than like minor injuries. I waited for nightfall and then came out of the drainage pipe, and found a human gas station and a small farm behind it down the road.

I was pretty desperate at that point so I decided to sneak into the gas station to steal borrow food and supplies. It was empty except for the gas station clerk…or so I thought. This human girl ended up seeing me, but then it turned out she was also borrowing food bc she’d been hitchhiking across the country, and I was like convinced she was going to turn me over to the other humans at first but we ended up forming an alliance and agreeing to help each other get to the city and her get food and supplies on the way and me hopefully find my family there.

AND THEN I WOKE UP without finding out the conclusion

I enjoy using work as a way to escape my left-leaning, anti-fascism, skeptical algorithm bubble. Firstly, I have a large number of coworkers with extremely right-wing opinions; and even though most of them have figured out that I'm better (and/or more stubborn) at arguing politics, religion et al than they are, I can get a couple bites of the more... Passionate ones. Secondly, I get access to a near clean Microsoft Start news page as the default home of the web browsers on all the computers as well as the daytime Network TV playing in the break rooms.

Anyways, all that preamble is tell a very specific story. While on break, not 30 minutes ago, there was some crap TV about Alaskan "homesteaders". Holy forking shirt balls y'all... The absolute gall of self-indulgent, libertarian, myth-making crap. The "Men-folk" coming on camera to jerk themselves about how their all just "living off the land" and "Struggling to build a simple chicken coop with the subpar lumber on their land"... the very next shot is a Hitachi track hoe lifting a log into a modern sawmill being powered with a Honda generator. With the "homesteader's" brand new Polaris ATV parked in the background.

Where'd you get the money for all that? Where's that replacement belt for your sawmill going to come from? Where do you get the gas to run the generator? Or to run the atv? Where do you buy new chains for that chainsaw you used to cut down that log? You got a Metallurgy degree and a forge in that backyard too?

The best part was the blatant misogyny. Guy talking about how he's being so brave and taking this big risk going bear hunting "just to put some meat in the freezer". I mean the bears are dangerous because they're fresh out of hibernation and thus very hungry. Then you've got six miles kayaking across a freezing cold Alaskan Lake... Then he picks up his dad in a $120,000 pickup truck; at least $5,000 worth of firearms, two satellite phones, 2 military grade GPS devices, and a brand new, two-person kayak. Then we cut to the guy's wife out on on the water and a dingy little fishing boat with an outbound motor that looks like lost to fight with a rust monster. The she goes "Yeah, if Frank and Dale don't bag a black bear, I'm the backup plan. I can usually catch enough fish to last us through the year in two or three solid weeks of work out here on the lake."

Now listen, I'm not saying she didn't have really nice fishing gear or a good GPS and/or satellite phone. But like. Seems like it'd be better to just go out and do the fishing, or hop in your brand new truck and drive the 300 miles to the nearest town and pick up 100 lb of beef and 50 lb of pork you clearly got money to buy some meat. But then you wouldn't be "manly" enough because you didn't go out there and fight a black bear with naught but a pocket knife or whatever.

That's the thing with libertarian thinking. It's all about not relying on "The Grid" until it's useful or even just convenient. Mine and everyone else's tax dollars paid for the roads the employees at the ammo factory took to work. All so you could jerk off about killing a groggy, starving black bear.
