the x-files: fight the future (1998)
the x-files s2e24 our town
i'm watching fight the future. again. because listening to an elizabeth holmes trial coverage podcast that had someone named kurzweil in it. so clearly... anyway. apparently this is my liveblog of my millionth rewatch. i had this movie on vhs, my friends.
it's gary grubbs who was in the cannibal town episode!
you know what else i like about this movie. someone's clear helicopter obsession. give me all the helicopters.
what about my men?!
i just think it's neat how they managed to make a fucking cool ass movie in the middle of the tv show run. i know it was hell on the cast and crew and the show itself kind of suffered but damn they made a good movie (some plot silliness aside, it is chris carter after all)
SCULLY: Well, I just climbed up 12 floors, I'm hot, I'm thirsty and to be honest, I'm wondering what I'm doing up here.
MULDER: You're looking for a bomb.
SCULLY: Yes, I know that, but the threat was called in to the federal building across the street.
MULDER: I think they have that covered.
MULDER: Whatever happened to playing a hunch, Scully? The element of surprise, random acts of unpredictability? If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.
What are we doing up here, Scully? It's hotter than hell.
glenne headly (uncredited, bartender)
mr holland's opus (1995) - glenne headly as iris holland
i love her voice. and she had this great little scene with mulder.
MULDER: I'm the key figure in an on-going government charade, the plot to conceal the truth about the existence of extraterrestrials. It's a global conspiracy, actually, with key players in the highest levels of power, that reaches down into the lives of every man, woman, and child on this planet. So, of course, no one believes me. I'm an annoyance to my superiors, a joke to my peers. They call me Spooky. Spooky Mulder, whose sister was abducted by aliens when he was just a kid and who now chases after little green men with a badge and a gun, shouting to the heavens or to anyone who will listen that the fix is in, that the sky is falling and when it hits it's gonna be the shit-storm of all time.
BARTENDER: Well. I would say that about does it, Spooky.
martin landau as alvin kurtzweil
fox peeing in the alley on the independence day poster. keep it classy.
KURTZWEIL: That official FBI business?
MULDER: What?
KURTZWEIL: Bet the Bureau's accusing you of the same thing in Dallas. Standing around holding your yank while bombs are exploding.
choppers!
plague to end all plagues. and FEMA!
"going that way" forever burned into my brain. little dudes with their thick accents and coordinated pointing. maybe i'll draw that some day.
MULDER: Five years together, Scully. How many times I been wrong? Never. Not driving anyway.
helicopters and the jiffy pop poppers (still an hour left, how many more choppers can we cram in)
MULDER: But you saved me! As difficult and as frustrating as it's been sometimes, your goddamned strict rationalism and science have saved me a thousand times over! You've kept me honest ... you've made me a whole person. I owe you everything ... Scully, and you owe me nothing. I don't know if I wanna do this alone... I don't even know if I can ... and if I quit now, they win.
fakeout kiss whatever. these little speeches, hugs and forehead smooches are a balm.
LANGLY: What can we do?
MULDER: You can strip Byers naked.
john neville as the well-manicured man
well-manicured man is well manicured.
In the DVD commentary, Chris Carter tries to peddle the idea that the emotions from the almost kiss in the hallway plus the CPR scene later in the movie equals a kiss. Not surprisingly, nobody buys that. (source)
oh, chris carter.
also, famously:
In X-Files Redacted, a 30-minute special that premiered on Comcast (before being leaked online and making its rounds on the Internet, of course), creator and showrunner Chris Carter set up the scene about where the main duo currently stand coming into the revival of the show: “Mulder and Scully, for 9 years, had a platonic relationship.”
SCULLY: I had you big time.
handwave the halfdead out of antarctica to talk to blythe danner.
CASSIDY: Bees and corn crops do not quite fall under the rubric of domestic terrorism.
SCULLY: How many other lives can we save? Look ... If I quit now, they win.
all right, all right. i'm done--WAIT

523. Various Authors - Dragon #119 (March 1987)
An issue mainly dedicated to Druids, this would have been a pretty indispensable magazine for those playing that character class, in fact, this issue not only covers all things Druid, from new cantrips to rites of ascension within the druidic orders, but it also covers a lot of Druid adjacent themes, such as the Beastmaster NPC or woodland creatures such as the Korred, as well as introducing new ones, like the Uldra and the Anchu, giant Capybara, Leshy, Wendigo or the Wild Halflings.
So this issue has a lot of interest for druids as well as extensive new bestiary entries. However, no single article in the magazine is more interesting to those charting the history of the game than an unassuming article, with no illustration or fanfare stuck in the middle pages, entitled The Game Wizards: My Dinner with Elminster.
This last article, by Jeff Grubb, details plans for the upcoming campaign setting, a little thing called the Forgotten Realms, and together with detailing plans for a box-set, new modules and novels, it also lets us know that it will be the default setting for Second Edition AD&D which is seemingly just around the corner, which will mean that Greyhawk is going to be left somewhat behind (which is kind of natural as the creator of that setting, Gary Gygax, had been out of TSR for over a year now). It also lets us know that the Oriental Adventures are actually set in the FR as well, in the continent of Kara-Tur and that some of the modules already released (such as Bloodstone Pass and Desert of Desolation series) had been set in the FR all along.

On June 19, 1998, the X-Files jumped from the small screen to premiere as a feature film The X-Files: Fight the Future. Creator Chris Carter, cast and crew had hoped after season 5 to continue the series as films, however Fox insisted that it continue on as a TV series. The next The X-Files film wouldn't appear until 5 years after the first run of the series cancelled (The X-Files: I Want To Believe July 25, 2008). The movie saw a new development in the pending alien invasion and gave a reason to re-open the X-Files, which had been closed in season 5. It teased fans with a kiss between Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson). The movie also saw the demise of The Well Manicured Man (John Neville). Some of the TV series regulars who appeared in the movie were The Cigarette-Smoking Man (William B Davis), A.D. Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), Langly (Dean Haglund), Byers (Bruce Harwood), Frohike (Tom Braidwood), Group Elder (Don S Williams), 2nd Elder (George Murdock), and the Black Haired Man (Michael Shamus Wiles). Some of the characters that were exclusive to the movie were Kurtzweil (Martin Landau), Bronschweig (Jeffrey DeMunn), Cassidy (Blythe Danner), Michaud (Terry O'Quinn), Strughold (Armin Mueller-Stahl), Fire Captain Cooles (Gary Grubbs), and The Barmaid (Glenne Headly). If the British Valley looked familiar it was because Milton Johns also appeared in the Empire Strikes Back and the original run of Doctor Who. ("The X-Files", Movie, Film)

Lilac is fully aware that the extremely rare left-hand drive 1964 Aston Martin DB5 waits for her only living uncle with a big purple — at her insistence — bow on its hood, yet gasps for Bruce and drops her jaw once the crypt that is Wayne Terminal illuminates. Her platinum blonde pigtails swing as she clasps her hands over her mouth and shouts, “Grandpa’s! Car!” with such zeal, the bat colony wrenches from their slumber and swarms the abandoned station’s ceiling. Joker preemptively ducks should one fly too low and smack him in the head.
“Irinka!” before his three-year-old bolts toward the parked vehicle that Nix spent the past three months fighting with a Belgian collector to repossess for a small fee of thirteen-thousand dollars to ship it back to the states, Joker slides his cigarette between his lips and scoops Lilac off the concrete by her waist. She giggles and swings her feet as if it were gymnastics practice as he flips and shelves her on his hip. Lilac loops an arm across the backs of her father’s uneven shoulders and rests her crown against his. He’s regretting giving her pigtails. The elastic cleaves a trench in his scalp.
Now that his toddler’s bulldozed what should’ve been a surprise, Joker pivots on one heel and adjusts his hold on Lilac so she bumps higher up his right hip. A red polyester curtain falls behind her as she waits for her father to sashay backwards without a sound across the concrete that took him, by him he means Gary, an obscene amount of time to coordinate logistics so it’d arrive unspoiled.
“There’s…” Joker pauses to lower Lilac.
She sprints toward the DB5 and wrenches the passenger door open. Its bright red leather interior pops even under the cave’s scarce light. The child disappears inside the passenger seat and waits for her father and uncle to approach. In the meantime, her iPhone slips from her coat pocket so she can set the PopSocket on its dashboard and track their Grubbs delivery.
Joker tosses a glance over his shoulder to ensure his little daughter’s staying put, then plucks the cigarette from his mouth so he, still walking backward like a tour guide, can punctuate with it, “Only 899 of the model left on Earth…so…” he clears his throat, “Naturally…” Werewolf gestures inside the vehicle once he stands parallel to it, “Your three-year-old birthday twin carved the dashboard with a rock she found on the way in.”
Lilac points out a very long, sad horizontal line that she’s hashed out at the end. Venting a plume of smoke from his nostrils, Joker lifts his eyebrows so the false comma-like pair painted on his forehead vanish.
He clarifies, “She says it’s you.” Another feature catches his eye. Joker throws a finger toward the gearbox on Lilac’s left and further explains, “Apparently Dad swapped the automatic out for a manual. It’s um…” his mouth quirks, “Road-ready, though…” out the side of his mouth he adds, “Not the way you drive. I…”
The placard on the dashboard spells, ‘Thomas Alan Wayne.’ Joker’s hands go up, tossing a smoky thread between the brothers.
As he says, “I-I’m not…exactly…the president of Dad’s fan club either,” Joker’s free hand, though trembling beyond his control, slips a long dark strand behind his little brother’s ear, “But…” His eyes avert, tracking the concrete as if any stagnant shadow might somehow lunge and tear what remains of his throat apart. When no such respite arrives, he blinks until he can feel Melpomene’s elongated diamond begin bleeding blue down his cheek. He shifts his torso and shoulders in a subtle oscillation that ripples from his trunk to his nape and reinvigorates him enough to admit, “He gave me you. And for that, I can’t hate him.” The cigarette returns to his lips. Joker’s thumb roves the slope of his little brother’s cheek as his fingers burrow deeper in his scalp. “I won’t.”
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ—ㅤHAPPY BIRTHDAY, BROOSE!
Bruce clocks the model just as soon as he’s got the whip in his sights; Lilac takes precedence, of course, and her uncle anticipates a launch in his direction with all the steady foundation of a base gymnast prepared for his flyer to somersault in the air above his head. She’s not exactly interested in practicing her parkour so much as she’s proud to show off her vandalism, but Bruce stays ready on the very high chance that she’ll change her mind.
Arthur swings into focus next, though it’s difficult for Bruce, a steadfast gearhead, to listen so intently when he’s more hands - on than he is interested in an instruction manual. Or a lecture. @jokethur probably knows it, but if he’s put off by Bruce’s split attentions, he doesn’t ever show it. Maybe that’s the wound of brotherhood, particularly the eldest’s. Or maybe that’s just Arthur. Bruce wouldn’t know either way; he only knows what’s being taught to him now.
The coupé is pristine barring his niece’s artistic upgrade. Bruce can see that without having to pop the hood or get under the chassis. He’d like to, though. For now, he settles for following his big brother’s lead in this orchestrated dance and forgets to ask how he got away with getting it here without his notice. He’ll remember later when his eyes don’t burn.
Bruce came in on his bike. Removing his helmet reveals the caked black caught in his lashes and smeared past his eye sockets. He drops his utility pack somewhere along the path he tracks along behind Arthur and continues to eye the DB5 like he’s half caught in a dream. It isn’t suspicion, but his veneer is too tempered with emotion to parse it one way or the other. Either way, he doesn’t sniffle because he’s allergic to anything in the Cave.
❝ Did you drive it in? ❞ Bruce poses this question to Lilac when he ducks down to admire the interior. His graffiti - style portrait plucks a wince from him prominent enough to dry his eyes for a moment. ❝ Nice, ❞ is all he offers. And then, his mouth quirking, ❝ Thanks. I like my, uh, hair. ❞
If he looks at Arthur, he knows his throat will close up again. He doesn’t need the excuse, but he gives it to himself as he straightens from his fold into the car and wheels toward his brother without warning. Bruce has nearly half a foot on Arthur; he still tucks his face into the eldest Wayne’s shoulder and curves his both of own until he can lock his arms around his more - than - willing captive. ❝ This is– ❞ His laugh is wet and hacking, as if he’s the one that smokes a pack a day. Bruce squeezes, and then pulls back to reflect his brother’s misty gaze back at him. ❝ You won’t really keep me from test driving it now, will you? ❞
#jokethur#bruce pretending he is not at all physically pained to see the car has been defiled by lilac: amazing#bruce and his twitching eye#he wants to go for a spin so bad#alfred's probably going to beat them with the food first though#lucky lilac#hap birth broose you big goofy goth!!!!#arthur and nix really won this one huh#he's not crying about the car#you asked what you get the guy who has everything#obviously you get him what he doesn't really SOLIDLY have. family <3#i heaved a little but whatever i love them#bruce bypassing the dad shit for now: anyway a car— nice

X-Files, Season 2, Episode 24: Our Town
Man creeping around with a young woman, you know she gonna put it on you and cause your convulsing medicine taking ass have a heart attack.
Old man was a sacrifice to a Scooby Doo villain looking witch doctor,
Scully referencing her being surprised that the woman who reported the missing horny old man didn't call Oprah reminded me that Oprah wasn't always the queen and king maker she is now, that she was into trash talk shows. Remember rainbow parties? (I'll have to talk about this in another post)
Oh shit, the sheriff is in like so many things, but I don't remember a single one of them lmaoooo.
This man in a suit on the chicken cleaning floor has to be an alien, right?
The vegetarian in me talking again, chicken corpses hanging around waiting to be eaten is wild to me. So gross. Y'all do you though.
Damn, homegirl caught a bullet and fell into chicken protein which also looks extra gross.
All those femurs look like a Mortal Kombat 2 fatality.
Do we got cannibals?
Scully walking around with a bucket of chicken is fucking funny to me.
Mrs. Kerns was in on teh whole thing too.
This man was hanging out with tribesmen and became a cannibal. I don't know this seems kinda racist somehow. And then he has a black maid.
Scully got knocked out, but she also seems like to be the one to be like "if you got knocked out like that, you'd be dead in real life" or whatever happens.
The most egregious thing about this cannibal fest is that they're serving people stew on paper plates.
Lmaoooo man stepping up wiping his mouth is top shelf acting.
Hell yeah we got some decapitation going down.
Mulder showing up like Nate Dogg in Regulators, saving Scully.
Plot twist, the sheriff that's in everything was in the mask. Shocking. Seriously, Gary Grubb (had to look him up) has been in like 1 episode of a whole bunch of shows, and he's even in the X-Files movie as a different character. My man stays working.
Another fun stand alone episode. One more left in season 2 and then we're in uncharted waters.
Rating: 🛸🛸🛸/🛸🛸🛸🛸🛸

391. Gary Gygax - Unearthed Arcana (1985)
This could have been really great, the idea is both sound and really useful to both players and DMs, a volume compiling and organizing new play variants, classes, races and so forth into a playtested companion to the core AD&D rulebooks. Unfortunately the execution of this good idea left much to be desired.
Gygax, with the help of Jeff Grubb and Dragon editor Kim Mohan compiled articles from the magazine and other sources as well as new stuff, playtested them, and put them in the book. All great up until now, however the book ended up being infamous because of the amount of mistakes which made their way into the final volume. Corrections and erratas would be upcoming, but all too late to save the reputation of this volume, which was meant to kick off the process for a second edition of AD&D, but ended up not being used in the next edition of the game at all.
As I say, this is a pity, there's some really good stuff here, and if you use the later corrections and are wary of mistakes, there is plenty of useful material which can still be salvaged from the volume. If nothing else it brought us another iconic Jeff Easley cover and a title which would be synonymous with experimental D&D content up until our days!

Sabotage (2014) Review
Come at me, Bro - this is my testosterone-fuelled Sabotage (2014) #Review
I’ve consulted the Oxford English Dictionary, Webster’s and even urbandictionary.com and none of them provide a definition of “Sabotage” which relates to any of the events in this flaccid, misogynistic, excessively violent and profanity-laden film. Saved from the straight-to-DVD bargain bin by the presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger, “Sabotage” is more of a mystery thriller than the action movie…
