BHOC: SGT FURY #151
I had sort of backed into buying SGT FURY regularly after my younger brother Ken had started doing it and then lost interest. I’d never really ben interested in war comics, but the fact that present day Nick Fury was such a presence throughout the Marvel line convinced me that it was “important” to read his adventures during the Big One. And it’s not like I didn’t enjoy the series, it was often…

Marvel gave more credit to it's writers back in the 60s. Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Gene Colan, Marie Severin, John Buscema, and more all got credit. Even the lettterers got credited. Sam Rosen and Artie Simek. Only ones not credited were the colourists (which is a shame, because i think that's an important job).
But DC...if you were lucky, DC might occasionally credit a writer or artist. But did they consistently do it? No. Never. The name of John Broome is pretty much never credited. Gardner Fox was only occasionally credited. Otto Binder, Bill Finger, etc. never really got much credit (i don't think). Also, not once did I see Carmine Infantino or Mike Sekowsky credited for their work on The Flash and the Justice League. DC had a credit problem, and now we don't know who to thank for half their stories now! As far as i'm aware, half the 60s aquaman stories have unknown writers because of this! So good job, DC! Terrific job! At least Marvel made crediting a more common practice!

Monster Month Day 30 - Ghost Rider
I know by now that Tumblr's not too keen on super-dudes, but Ghost Rider is one of, if not the most un-heroic Marvel character there is.
He's a lot closer to a weird monster from an early 50's Weird Fiction comic. I love this dude.

Samantha Reads Comics: Hellacious Biznasty #1
On hiatus from Digressions on David. Randomly been wanting to read the original Marvel Spotlight run about the Son of Satan.

ugh, this inking style is SO cluttered. does not need nearly as much shading and hatching as it has.
Tumblr media
that's how he works? Huh.
Tumblr media
I'm always super into "guy who carries himself like an outright supervillain, but does good-guy stuff"
Tumblr media
Kind of a hilariously mundane move for a hell-demigod
Tumblr media
lmao they go ahead and visually depict the Big Guy himself in the very first issue of this. subtlety was not invented until 1978
Tumblr media
yeah Daimon fucking rules
Tumblr media
hey, not cool, Daimon, actually! maybe your dad's just exploring some shit! why so heteronormative?
Tumblr media
some Alanis levels of "understanding what irony is" going on here
of the two 70s Marvel heroes whose main deal is fighting their all-powerful dad all the time, I think I prefer Daimon. certainly less, uh, culturally questionable than the other guy's stories.
Tumblr media
I like that "the most handsome man any earthly woman has ever seen" is just Namor
Tumblr media
why is he doing the big scary arms pose
Tumblr media
fucking LOVE this cover
Tumblr media
oh man, just this cold-open panel is prettier than anything in the first two issues

fuuuuuuuuck me this rules

BHOC: SGT FURY #149
For some reason, possibly simple inertia, I had started regularly reading SGT FURY even though I wasn’t typically a fan of war comics. That was maybe all right, because SGT FURY was really only a war comic in its trappings, the way HOGAN’S HEROES was about the war. It was really a comedic super hero action feature, it’s just that none of the principles had legitimate super-powers. But their…

Black Bolt offered Hulk a place amongst the inhumans, but hulk refused because the other inhumans still seemed to judge him. But i like that black bolt at least had the decency to offer hulk a home. It's nice to see some people treat him kindly. (Hulk Annual #1):
