making the worst tumblr post ever and talking about winterkov. ONCE.
in canon i think they should never date (because simon is too sadsack) but instead have the worst one night stand ever.
listen; winter king is clearly down to fuck himself (definitely “i’d make a bunch of clones, i am pro clone-fucking”) but simon (“what if my clone is evil”/“i would not want to fuck my clone because my self loathing is THAT strong”) would need to be at the lowest point in his life or they’d both need to be absolutely shitfaced.
halfway through the episode they have extremely mediocre sex offscreen that winter king keeps insisting was really good and then simon feels really weird about his thousand year dry spell being broken by himself from another reality. he does not bring this up to fionna or cake at all. cake can sense it. in the b plot marshall and gary discuss if theyd fuck another universe’s version of themself.
the show then continues as normal except when he talks to (gol)betty she’s like omnipotent or something so halfway through the most dramatic conversation of their lives she’s like. “unrelated but im kind of jealous. i always wanted to fuck a clone of myself. how was it” and then simon unlocks shrimp emotions and after a minute of silence just says “it was okay” and then moves on
if you disagree. i don’t know what to tell you

Obscure Character Showdown FINALE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image ID: the first image is of image is of No Significant Harassment, a shadowy figure standing behind a sleeping pink-red, fox-like creature. their green hands seem to be holding up the floating creature. the second image is of Granger, a girl with green eyes and short, wavy or curly black hair. in her hair is a red hat or ribbon. she's wearing a black turtleneck sweater, blue overalls, and a green coat. end ID]
No Significant Harassment
[NSH has beaten Akama (The Idiot (1951)), Libby Day (Dark Places), Sally Swing (Betty Boop), Shrimp (The Upturned), Oopsy Bear (Care Bears (2007 series)), Hikaru (Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu), and Diggory Graves (Hello from the Hallowoods)] They're just a silly little guy. A jokester. Significant harassment if you will. Anyway, a more in depth run down: They're a city sized supercomputer built by a Buddhist adjacent society to figure out how to transcend the 'Great Cycle' (semi-metaphorical cycle of death and rebirth) in a safer way than the previous method (submerging oneself in the 'void sea' which is a mysterious golden liquid that dissolves whatever it touches). Despite being built for this express purpose NSH never really shows a pressing interest in ascension, even cracking jokes about those who are still looking for a solution. Whether this is due to indifference, dislike of, or humor to cope with being unable to ascend is not clear and really up to interpretation. Example: NSH: I wish them super good luck in that endeavor. How is it going to happen? Have the overseers gnaw through bedrock until their entire can crashes down in the void sea? BSM: Please be respectful when speaking of the Void Sea. Grey Wind, where did you hear this? CW: I really shouldn't say. He's going to attempt some sort of breeding program. Thought you might want to know. NSH: Haha with the slimers, lizards and etceteras? Surely the answer was in a lizard skull all along! He's very flippant, but does care very intensely for those close to him. NSH: Moon? It's me again. NSH: I do not know if you are receiving these. Please signal in any way you can. NSH: I need to talk to you. I need to know you're okay. NSH: … NSH: Its difficult for us to assist you over this distance. NSH: Even more difficult for us to do anything in the midst of these tantrums. NSH: Were going to try everything that we can. NSH: Just hold on a little longer. (Context for previous convo: They genetically engineered a super organism of a slugcat (the species you play as in Rain World) to help reset his coworker/sibling after her collapse and restart her systems. He was so desperate to fix her that he accidentally messed up the slugcat's (Hunter) genetic code and as a result it became riddle with the Rot (relatively similar to aggressive cancer) :( which parallels his other coworker/siblings condition who also has the rot. ) He canonically uses he/they pronouns too! Nonbinary swag! NSH has major internet troll vibes. He has sent a data pearl of "something distasteful" to his neighbors on several(?) occasions and causes chaos. If he had access to the wider internet he'd probably be an influencer So…yeah! Vote NSH this website likes the allure of heavy machinery and stuff like that so… there you go. Kind of a blorbo. End post.
Granger
[Granger has beaten Chopfyt (Oz), Wolfman (Darkwood), Gaap Goemon (Mairimashita! Iruma-kun), Forest Friend (Gris), Turnip (Chicory: A Colorful Tale), Gary (Faith the Unholy Trinity), and Stag Malinay (Krystar First Fragment)] so granger is the main character of the indie game "NeverHome" Chapter one, which is only $1 on Steam, is called NeverHome: Hall of Apathy. if ur a fan of young protags being put in RPG maker horror games, then this is the game for you!! so granger is just that… she wakes up to find herself in a strange, hostile world. she, along with the friends she makes, must solve the various puzzles before them while creatures are out to kill them… and along the way they can uncover the secrets of these never ending halls… her dynamics with the cast is also super fun… each character gets their moment or moments with granger. and what's so cute is that there's unique art for each pair that highlights the fact you cant get through these halls alone!! she also has her own theme song!! here!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_vwtmIj5cw it's called cyclical tragedy AND HERE IS AN ANALYSIS OF THE THEME!! MUSIC THEORY!!! written by my good friend @HIEMIOLA "cyclical tragedy" embodies the protagonist, granger, through the music theory behind the track and ties itself back into the main track as well. to begin with an overview of the track, the key is D minor and hte time signature is 3/4. the piece begins with a broken minor third starting from the tonic. that is, it begins on the main note and moves along the main chord, D to F. the next set of notes are C to E, which is shifted down a step. the phrase repeats again, this time D to F, then G to E, which is an inverse movement from the original sequence. even in this first part, we could tell that the protagonist begins from square 1 with a simple pattern, then tries it again when it works. however, the inverse breaks that expectation of repetition, thus showing the diverse variations of solutions she comes up with using just the tools she has (the two notes moving in thirds). just like the game, she is given a handful of objects as well as a knife to defend herself and solve the mysteries of the world she exists in. with her creative uses of the items given to her, she continues on her way through the plot. we will keep moving. the melody begins. true to the title of the track, the melody cycles around the same beginning note, D, that she always returns to at her square 1. this is a nod to the save states she is allowed to keep to make sure that we the players don't lose the game, but it also references the health bar that appears as a circle around her avatar. the melody, mapped out, is also moving in an up-down wave movement across the sheet music. granger is creative with the knife she has and the quest items she obtains throughout the story, but she is not entirely reckless. rather, she knows when it is time to return to the safe rooms to rest. to time her returns requires skill because she must run to cover without being caught by varying her path so the enemies don't corner her as she tries to return to the room. most of the time, she is successful, shown through the consistent return to the beginning note. let's keep going. i would like to turn your attention to the main theme briefly. in the bass notes, you can hear arpeggios and outlined chords. this makes up the bulk of the accompaniment in the main game theme. [mod note: the rest of the essay, and some more propaganda, is continued under a cut because tumblr will not process more text than this in an indent. sorry to split it up, please continue below for the rest of the essay and additional propaganda (including art) !]
the third variation of granger's theme also has arpeggiated chords in the accompaniment while the melody features broken chords. at this stage, the pattern switches to eigth notes instead of the quarter notes at first. with greater movement and heightened senses, she runs throughout world and befriends other people, thus interacting further with the environment. while she isn't exactly someone we would call open, she is respectful to the people she first meets and has no problems with asking them for help when she needs it. because of her openness to working together, she speeds up her progress by asking for aid at obstacles that would be too difficult for her to overcome on her own, such as asking a teammate to break things, move things, or reach into smaller holes. fusing the main theme elements with her own theme marks this step as the inciting incident that sets her on the path to escape from this world. we'll continue.
continuing the same part, we hear some secondary fifths. i'm not entirely sure if this is what you call it, but it is a nod to the parallel key, D major. depending on what theory class you take, this could also be considered the other half of the key. i dont know how else to describe it, but i digress. these are glimpses to different dialogue options she could take, glimpses to a different key or a different ending. because this game only has one chapter ending so far, we are unsure of what other paths granger will end up in; we only know that there are certainly other endings she will experience, only to begin the cycle again when the save state is loaded for players to reach another ending. both A major and G major are chords that signify different choices that may lead her elsewhere only for her to return back to the tonic or main note, D. despite this, she keeps going, as will we.
at the midpoint of the track, we see a quick shift in patterns. instead of upward leaps in the notes, the melody falls in stepwise motion. true to the plot, this is another turning point of the game when she is forced to make a choice: continue or stop. after facing the spoiler event, her once determined personality is challenged as she struggles to keep herself and her team together. despite being the headstrong protagonist who spearheaded solutions, even now she finds herself doubting and taking smaller steps, smaller risks.
even after all of this, she rises to the challenge as the melody returns to its beginning sequence. true to a protagonist she gets up again despite the events that transpired and keeps her team moving in their lowest points. the thirds return as she finds more objects to solve more puzzles to open more rooms to save more friends. this repeating part of the track only solidifies her resolve as the piece ends with a broken chord in the main key, her key, of D minor. despite everything that transpired, she stayed true to herself."
the game is also so, so charming with the art, music, and story made by the same person its so clearly loved and full of passion!! i love listening to the game's ost on occassion!! since it's all on youtube!
ok one last thing thing!! on may 8th, the game hit 100 downloads (on both steam and itch.io). you can see the creator of the game celebrate that with this lovely drawing of granger: https://twitter.com/NeverHome_Game/status/1655761270694633472
so at most, only a bit over 100 people have played the game… id like to say that makes it obscure!!
anyways granger and neverhome!! we love to see our protagonists put in horrific situations and isn't she super cute with a lil bow on her head? she is my daughter…

Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! #6: “Slop” | March 18, 2007 - 11:45PM | S01E06
Cold Open: Tim and Eric enter the frame in different outfits, walking with their chests out. Eventually Tim enters with his shirt off. His nip does a big milk squirt, yuck! (the first of many sketches to feature his teets). This sketch repeats with Tim wearing a sweater which Bugs Bunny (I assume) erases away at said sweater exposing Tim’s nips yet again. This includes a middle third one which weeps a drop of blood, which gets lapped up by a giant “tongue” that juts out of Tim’s pants (it sure looks like something else). This is said to be in reference to some extra feature on the DVD for the Gary Busey classic Quigley.
Tonight’s hosts are a fake, foreign Tim & Eric, who are barely intelligible. They mostly just say nonsense words. Tim & Eric point out in the commentary track that it’s a little self-indulgent to be doing this on your sixth episode. But it does yield one of the greatest moments of the show: the post credits stinger of the episode wherein a sick Tim Heidecker pathetically says “we should all get together some time heh heh heuugh (coughing fit)”. This is one of those moments of television that has never left my head.
What I’d call the “main” sketch of the show is Beaver Boys, which has three segments. The Beaver Boys are two brothers who dress in tight white clothing, drink white wine, eat shrimp, and seek out sexual partners to have unprotected sex with. This is a very typical Tim & Eric premise: Weird characters acting weird, dumb names of things popping up on screen (for this sketch it’s the Beaver Boy’s various dances). We see them harass women on a beach who at first seem to freeze at the sight of them as if they are wild animals and they are behaving in whatever way a teacher or valued community member taught them to in the event of a Beaver Boy encounter. When they start conversing, it’s as if they are humoring little children. The voices Tim & Eric use are “deaf guy adjacent”, and I wonder if that was a choice. A shirtless man in a fanny pack looks at them piteously: this man was on the beach that day, watching them film. They liked his look, so they asked him to film a cameo. It’s worth noting that Tim is also shirtless in this, again.
Beaver Boys would recur in the series at least a couple more times. This is definitely the strongest of all the sketches, I think. It was reworked from its original form, which you can find on the DVD extras. It was originally envisioned as a documentary about said boys. There was also a “viral video” of them performing a rap song about being Beaver Boys. Tim and Eric point out in the commentary that it’s good to come up with characters that your fans can easily dress up as. Indeed, I’ve been to many Tim & Eric live events, and there are always Beaver Boys in the crowd.
DLH does a song about Staying in School, this time with a big creepy bear puppet. The best part of this is when it winks at the camera. It’s alright. Too scary!
Tragg’s Trough is their big celebrity sketch featuring Fred Willard. This one has grown on me. I thought it was sorta weak at the time, despite having an affinity for both Fred Willard and Tim & Eric. At the time I thought their styles clashed just a tad, and considered this a mild miss. As it’s own thing, I like it! Willard worked out a lot of ad-libs for this, so it’s safe to say he absolutely made it his own. There’s a little call back in this where Fred Willard says “stay in school” for no reason. I could do without that. Get out of school, you sicko. Oh yeah RIP Fred Willard.
Kidz Break is back with “I Wear My Dad’s Dirty Socks”, based on a real dad Tim or Eric or both of them knew. He was the dad of a childhood friend who would go out line dancing and come home reeking of other women’s perfume and would casually come home to face his wife. The song is catchy but nowhere near the heights of “I Sit Down When I Pee”. I think they went too broad with the make-up here. I think these characters are supposed to be real kids, but the pronounced rosy cheeks make me think we’re watching adult actors portray children in-universe, like it’s a Mexican sitcom or something. The first sketch is so perfect, so it’s gonna be a hard act to follow. This does have an excellent shot of Tim spewing a sock out of his mouth. Yuck!
The Ken Tulley exercise tapes commercial is really fucking funny and great. It’s a weird premise that’s a tad tough to follow: Ken Tulley (Tim with his shirt off yeat again) and his weird wife are selling a set of exercise tapes that he has legally acquired but otherwise has nothing to do with. The tapes involve a potty-mouthed hispanic man whose fitness regimen requires the ability to flip. Ken Tulley bundles this with a bunch of other useless crap that he’s probably also legally acquired, like Glow Bonez, a car tarp (it actually makes your car smaller), and a spherical storage container called the Taargüs. Get in shape, dickhead!
Honestly, I remembered this one as my least-favorite of season one. At the very least I now like it better than Chunky. Pretty gosh darn good.

I’m sure you’re all in suspense as to what this post  was all about and uh... This. It was for this.
Tumblr media
So join me, won’t you, a descent into madness much like mosswall!henrik, to discover quantifiably who is the pinkest islander.
So this all started when I was making an edit of Gary and had the thought, ‘huh. he’s really pink. It’s kinda funny looking the more I stare at it. Like a big old shrimp’. That grew into ‘huh, I wonder who’s the MOST pink’.
But then I realized!!! That I have the tools to figure that out very scientifically!!
I have the ability to survey and collect data. I have the ability to pour an absurd amount of time into this question. So I started by picking out all the islanders who I thought had a pink hue. I didn’t want to be biased and pick out the MOST pink parts of their body because that would skew the results. So I put each islander’s sprite through a color composite tool. Essentially this would blend all the colors in an image together into one, median color.
But I just wanted their skin tones, I didn’t want their features polluting the color. So went through I erased each and everyone’s face and hair : ))))))))
Tumblr media
Problem. I was using PNGs of the sprites with no backgrounds, but the tool I was using automatically set the background as white. All this extra white space was dramatically lightening the median tones. I couldn’t set the background to a specific color because that would again skew the results. So instead I opted to zoom in on the largest chunk of each body that I could and crop out the most amount of background. This had my google drive looking like.
Tumblr media
Which admittedly…. Not great… But got much better results!
Tumblr media
Which I then put into the lovely quiz that yall took.
Then I painstakingly went through each answerer of the quiz and matched their answers to the option provided, because my dumb ass didn’t think to number or label the hues in the actual quiz. It got to the point where I could just look at the hue and know ‘oh that’s Seb’ and didn’t have to compare. But here’s how the quiz results turned out:
Tumblr media
Everyone agrees that Lucy and Gary are pink as hell comparatively, but the rest were pretty mixed, with Ciaran and Miles barely squeezing out a victory.
Then I asked yall to debate between the four winner, and asked the groupchat
Tumblr media
GARY WON. JUST AS I SUSPECTED. PINK MAN IS PINK. However Ciaran stole away the Shrimp-iest title.
Tumblr media
So then I made a collage And for funsies, I made these
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point it was like 1am and I was just having fun with colors, it got very divorced from the F L E S H aspect of it all.
But at the end of the day, it was so worth it. Because now we know who the pinkest and shrimpiest islanders are. You’re welcome.

California Highway 1 Road Trip
Six weeks ago, Highway 1 fully reopened in Big Sur, following devastating mudslides in May 2017. After $54 million worth of repairs and the removal of millions of tons of earth, rocks, and debris, travelers can once again enjoy an uninterrupted drive along the gorgeous coastal highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
But it’s not just the views that make the trek one of the most famous road trips in the world. There’s also the food to contend with: Dotted along the winding route, you’ll find peppery smoked-fish tacos, juicy burgers smothered in eggs and melted cheese, and homemade doughnuts oozing with jelly.
Our version of this journey begins in Point Reyes Station, north of San Francisco. There, you’ll want to stock up on triple cream Mt Tam cheese from Cowgirl Creamery and scarf as many straight-from-the-bay oysters as you can get down. Your eating adventure will continue from there—you’d better start hungry.
  Point Reyes
Side Street Kitchen
The specialty at this year-old, bright, modern diner is the crispy skinned rotisserie chicken, fragrant with herbs and served half or whole with an array of sauces, including curried yogurt, salsa verde, and chimichurri rojo. The other specialty: puffy, sugar-coated, fruit-filled apple fritters. 60 4th St., Point Reyes Station
The Boat Oyster Bar
Hog Island Oyster Co. is famed for the oysters it pulls out of the bay and supplies to top dining rooms around the country. A reservation-only café on the water features those world-class bivalves; the menu changes often, but it frequently includes Hog Island’s singular kumamotos. You can get a dozen raw for $36; even better are the barbecued ones, grilled and dripping with chipotle bourbon garlic butter. 20215 Shoreline Highway, Marshall
Half Moon Bay Area
  La Costanera
Peruvian food is having a moment in the U.S., and La Costanera, with its wall of windows overlooking the water from a second-floor dining room, has been recognized by Michelin’s Bib Gourmand. The menu has a mix of classics such as antichuchos (grilled skewers) with marinated beef heart and pork belly; empanadas; tender beer-braised lamb shank; and lomo saltado (beef tenderloin with onions, soy sauce, and a fried egg, if you want one). 8150 Cabrillo Highway, Montara
Dad’s Luncheonette
Chef Scott Clark used to cook at San Francisco’s Michelin-three-starred Saison. He’s transformed a red-painted train caboose into a cozy, wood-lined diner with a small menu of comfort food favorites. The $12 hamburger sandwich has melted cheese, a soft egg, and red onion pickles on grilled white bread; the mushroom version substitutes maitakes for the grass-fed beef. 225 Cabrillo Highway South, Half Moon Bay
Sam’s Chowder House
Seafood makes up almost the entire menu at Sam’s, including a “Captains Platter” of oysters, clams, shrimp, poke, and ceviche; an appetizer of grilled sardines; steamed clams (with the option of linguine); and lobster rolls, “naked” with butter or “dressed” with aioli. At night, the place highlights fresh catches such as Pacific swordfish and local halibut. The seats on the deck offer a panoramic ocean view. 4210 Cabrillo Highway, Half Moon Bay
Hop Dogma Brewing Co.
The rotating array of craft brews at this locally popular beer hall might include Pyro’s Prost chili beer (pilsner brewed with jalapeño); Every Third Inquiry, a Bourbon barrel-aged stout; and the flagship Alpha Dank IPA. Guests can order food from nearby Lamas, a Peruvian and Mexican restaurant, and the tacos, burritos, and arroz con pollo will be delivered to the taproom. 270 Capistrano Rd., Half Moon Bay
Duarte’s Tavern
Dating back to 1894, when Frank Duarte bought the place for $12 in gold, this venerable restaurant specializes in a California version of Continental cuisine. The menu runs the gamut from shrimp cocktail to pork chops with fresh applesauce. The specialties are anything with artichokes, plus the cioppino, packed with clams, shrimp, cod and especially crab, which people drive down from San Francisco to eat. 202 Stage Rd.
Santa Cruz
The Picnic Basket
Set on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the picturesque luncheonette has an all-day menu with a powerful breakfast selection: golden-brown turnovers stuffed with seasonal fruit or Niman Ranch ham and cheese; an egg-potato-greens frittata sandwich on toast; and house-made jelly doughnuts. Later in the day, hot dogs and elbow macaroni and cheese turn up on the menu. The nearby Penny Ice Creamery, where everything is house-made under the same ownership, is equally popular. 125 Beach St.
Monterey Peninsula
The Meatery
A serious, whole-animal butcher shop with impressive cuts of meat on display, this white-tiled space also serves as a deli. Sandwiches range from a hefty Reuben to banh mi made with caramelized pork belly slices, pickled vegetables, a hit of cilantro, and kewpie mayo on a French roll. A highlight is the house corned beef with sauerkraut on rye. The hot food offerings change daily: On Sundays and Mondays, there’s buttermilk-fried chicken; on Thursdays, visitors line up for the baby back ribs. 1534 Fremont Blvd., Seaside
The Bench Restaurant
Set on the impossibly scenic Pebble Beach Golf Links 18th hole, the Bench has a crowd-pleasing menu that offers all kinds of pizza-styled flatbreads: with pepperoni; with ratatouille, fennel ricotta and heirloom tomatoes; and with bench bacon and grilled, pickled red onion. The 24-ounce short rib, the Smokey Joe, is smoked for 10 hours. Aside from the best views, the outdoor deck has fire-pit tables. 1700 17 Mile Dr., Pebble Beach
Aubergine at l’Auberge Carmel
Chef Justin Cogley operates one of the country’s best under-the-radar fine-dining restaurants. Set in a Relais & Châteaux property, the intimate dining room has a $175 tasting menu that combines local ingredients in unexpected ways: A Morro Bay oyster with caviar has a hit of sea water, and seared abalone is accompanied by romaine lettuce that’s been braised and sliced in thick rounds, with lobster-infused lettuce puree. Monte Verde at 7th Ave., Carmel
Big Sur
Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant
Amid the trees in the hills off the highway, this exceptional café produces terrific pizzas from the wood oven, with a charred, bready, chewy crust and such toppings as creamy greens, mushrooms and tangy taleggio, and red sauce meatballs. The place is first and foremost a bakery: The creamy lemon curd pie in a pistachio crust is addictive, as is any pastry in the display case. 47540 Highway 1
Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn
Post Ranch Inn, renowned for its modernist, cliffside, treehouse rooms overlooking the ocean, has a new manager, Gary Obligacion, formerly of Chicago’s celebrated Alinea. The property’s Sierra Mar restaurant is home to one country’s largest wine collections, with 14,000-plus bottles. It complements an elegant four-course tasting menu from which the seared foie gras has a garnish of hazelnuts and king salmon is paired with smoked split peas and sweet apple. 47900 Highway 1
The Sur House at Ventana Big Sur
In 2017, Ventana went through a multimillion-dollar renovation. The renovated Sur House restaurant now has outdoor fireside seating and a bar menu with smoky spice-rubbed chicken wings and open-faced tuna melt accented with pickled fennel. The dinner menu has deceptively simple dishes, such as grilled pork loin on a bed of jalapeño-spiked grits. The wine cellar is also notable: some 10,000 bottles with a focus on the Central Coast. 48123 Highway 1
San Luis Obispo
Ruddell’s Smokehouse
There’s not much barbecue along Highway 1. The notable exception is Ruddell’s, where founder Jim Ruddell set up shop in 2001 in a small building with a few tables outside. The place smokes albacore and salmon with a brown sugar and kosher salt rub; chicken is slow-cooked over hickory. The smoked seafood and poultry are available as tacos in a big French-roll sandwich or salad—and by the pound. 101 D St., Cayucas
Cracked Crab
In the surfing town of Pismo Beach, the unpretentious Cracked Crab has a blazing neon sign and lines stretching out the door. The menu changes according to availability of seafood and features an ocean’s worth of crab: dungeness cocktail with lime and avocado; puck-size, pan-seared lump blue crab cakes; and New England-style lobster rolls stuffed with crab instead. The seafood buckets offer the opportunity to mix and match wild Gulf shrimp, Alaskan crab, clams, mussels, and lobster tails; they go for $61 for one person and $79 for two and come with all the mallets and scissors you’ll need to extract the shellfish. 751 Price St., Pismo Beach
Santa Barbara
Jalama Beach Store & Grill
In Lompoc, the epicenter of Santa Barbara winemaking, is this grill, set inside a store that’s set inside the county park. The specialty is the Jalama burger: It’s quintessential Cali-style, with shredded lettuce, tomato, onions, special sauce, and a griddled bun. The burger has gotten so popular over its almost 40-year history that the name is trademarked. 9991 Jalama Rd., Lompoc
La Super-Rica Tacqueria
Famous for being name-checked by Julia Child, Super-Rica is a cheerful, white-and-turquoise stand with a large selection of options that feature stellar homemade tortillas. The tacos are filled with all kinds of grilled meats—chunks of spiced, brick-colored chorizo; adobado with tender strips of marinated pork. The Super-Rica Especial is made up cheese-stuffed green pasilla chiles that are roasted and draped over tortillas with marinated pork and more cheese, for $6. 622 N. Milpas St., Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.
At the end of a dock on the harbor, this photogenic counter started out selling local seafood almost 30 years ago. Customers can still buy fish from commercial fishermen here. (There’s also a robust online store with trays of uni and stone crab claws.) The chopped caesar comes with a choice of grilled, skewered shrimp or sweet scallops. There’s more local shrimp, coated with coconut and crispy fried, garnished with onion rings. Also highly recommended are the linguine studded with garlic-sauteed clams in the shell and the monumental, steamed two-pound crab, along with a selection of local wine and beer by the pitcher. 230 Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara
The Los Angeles Area
Malibu Farm
What started as a pop-up dining room by Helene Henderson in 2013 is now a farmers market-driven restaurant and café on the Malibu Pier, with outposts in Miami and Hawaii. The all-day café at the end of the dock has a lightbulb-lit menu that boasts a pile-up of Swedish pancakes with whipped cream and whatever the seasonal berries are, as well as kale caesar and BLTs with lemon aioli brushed on whole wheat. Down the pier, a slightly more serious version of the restaurant offers a tofu, spinach, and tomato scramble on weekend mornings, and nachos, featuring blue corn chips laden with black beans, melty cheese, and drizzles of sour cream in the evenings. 23000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu
Tallula’s
Chef Jeremy Fox, who heads up the nearby vegetable-focused Rustic Canyon, now puts a creative spin on the Mexi-Cali dining room. In a colorful space decorated with hanging plants, Fox uses exceptional local corn, served Mexican-style with smoky chipotle aioli, and accents black-cod tacos with malt tartar sauce in tender, house-made tortillas. A daily taco special is dreamed up by rotating cooks in the kitchen. The serious bar program features mezcal Manhattans on draft, as well as the obligatory margaritas. 118 Entrada Dr., Santa Monica
Father’s Office
Chef Sang Yoon began serving one of the—if not the—country’s first gourmet burgers almost 20 years ago. The Office Burger is made from freshly ground, dry-aged beef, so it’s got a deep, meaty flavor that’s further accentuated by sweet caramelized onions, bacon, gruyere, and blue cheese. Accompanying fries, standard or sweet potato, are presented in a mini-shopping cart. Father’s Office is equally known for pouring dozens of local craft beers. 1018 Montana Ave., Santa Monica

Sexagenarian in Leyte plants 10K mangroves
#PHnews: Sexagenarian in Leyte plants 10K mangroves
TACLOBAN CITY – For eight years now, a 65-year-old man in Matalom, Leyte has planted about 10,000 mangroves along a coastal area at the back of his house.
Gary Dabasol, jobless, has been planting mangroves in Punong village because he was worried of the danger of big waves especially during typhoons.
In doing so, he just gathered mangrove seedlings along the coastline in their village. Among the mangrove species that he planted include miyapi, pagatpat, and bakawan.
“I'm glad that I was able to inspire people, I hope that they will also follow what I am doing. I also want to contribute to higher marine production by cultivating a spooning area for fish, crabs, and shrimps and other species," Dabasol said in an interview on Wednesday.
The story of Dabasol was shared by netizen Dan Niez from Hilongos town, who visited the coastal area of Matalom last week to unwind.
Niez said the last time he went to the area several years ago, the place was just an open space along the shoreline.
He was surprised that during his visit last week, there are full-grown mangroves planted along the coastline.
“When I posted it, many people reacted especially millennials and praised Tatay Gary for what he did. I think they were inspired, and I hope they are inspired because planting 10,000 mangroves is not that easy,” Niez said.
“I hope that the government will also help him because what he did is extraordinary. It is not usual for one person to have this kind of initiative," Niez added.
He added that the youth should follow the example of Dabasol and make him a role model in protecting the environment and marine ecosystem.
Since Niez posted the story of Dabasol on October 25, it already earned more than 3,000 likes and over 3,000 shares.
According to the website of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, mangrove forest is also known as the “rainforest of the sea.” It grows well in tropical countries and is an important part of the coastal and marine ecosystem that includes the seagrass and the coral reefs.
Of the world’s more than 70 mangrove species, around 46 species are known to occur in various parts of the country. (PNA)

An uncertain future for migrant workers, in a post-pandemic world |
Gary Rynhart: When COVID-19 unfold all over the world, many migrants had been shipped residence unceremoniously or left to fend for themselves. Migrants have additionally – due to the sectors they work in, and the poor circumstances during which many decrease expert migrants stay and work – been vectors for spreading the virus. Examples we’ve seen embrace staff in meat factories in Germany, and building staff within the United Arab Emirates and Singapore.
UN Information: are migrants extra more likely to have misplaced work, because of the financial disaster?
Gary Rynhart: Job losses have typically hit migrant staff hardest, as a result of they’re extra more likely to work in casual jobs which might lack security nets, in case of job loss or sickness. That is significantly the case for migrants in growing international locations, and momentary migrants, reminiscent of seasonal staff, the place social safety tends, at greatest, to be restricted to work harm compensation or well being advantages.
Over thirty international locations on the earth get greater than 10 per cent of their GDP from remittances. This cash despatched residence by round one billion staff abroad or internally to their households is collectively increased than both overseas direct funding or official growth help. It was virtually three-quarters of a billion {dollars} final 12 months. The World Financial institution estimates a drop of 20% this 12 months. Households throughout the growing world are being impacting, creating ripple results all through their economies.

Burmese migrants work in fishing boats and coastal communities in Phang Nga, Southern Thailand.
UN Information: will migrants be capable to discover jobs, as soon as the worldwide financial system recovers?
Gary Rynhart: The disruption to provide chains and closed borders ensuing from the pandemic will in all probability result in extra corporations turning to expertise, automation and Synthetic Intelligence. In a latest survey by accounting agency EY, round half of firm bosses surveyed, in 45 international locations, mentioned that they’re dashing up plans to automate their companies, and a few 41 per cent mentioned they had been investing in accelerating automation, as companies ready for a post-crisis world.
That is doubtlessly unhealthy information for migrants. Southeast Asia is a working example: take the garment factories within the area, which is generally full of inside migrants, or the shrimp peeling business in Thailand, which is completed by Myanmar migrants.
Expertise to cut back, or eradicate, the necessity for human staff in these industries already exists.
Even name centres within the Philippines, which benefited from outsourcing that started within the 1990s, are affected. It’s estimated that as much as 90 per cent of those ‘new’ jobs are below excessive menace from automation. That’s a million jobs, accounting for round seven per cent of the nation’s GDP.

Manufacturing, retail, well being care and hospitality shall be considerably impacted sectors.  Within the Japanese healthcare sector robotic care staff, or ‘carebots’ are more and more deployed to, fairly actually, do the ‘heavy lifting’. This does away with most of the bodily demanding orderly positions historically stuffed by migrants.
The retail sector has sometimes relied on migrant staff, however the COVID-19 pandemic has seen a dramatic progress in on-line purchasing. Within the hospitality sector, automated experiments embrace robots that present bartending providers on cruise ships and in airports, and that ship meals to lodge company’ rooms. Extra motels are providing automated check-in through app and even, in China, through facial recognition. Alexa-enabled audio system in lodge rooms let company ask for sightseeing ideas and order toothbrushes with out speaking to workers.
Utilizing GPS expertise, robots can be utilized in precision agriculture for weed management and harvesting. The pandemic may additionally have given one other nudge to expertise for Driverless automobiles which may quickly see taxi driving, one other job many migrants do, fall by the wayside.

A faculty trainer in France connects along with her college students remotely through the COVID-19 pandemic.
What the previous couple of months have proven is that an terrible lot of processes and conferences (e.g. docs’ appointments, visa renewals) will be accomplished on-line.  There was a surge in telemedicine, and, as video expertise improves, diagnostics reminiscent of measuring temperature, coronary heart fee, and blood stress may additionally be accomplished through a webcam. Sure parts of instructing will be accomplished by digital platforms, and there may be presently a giant improve in internet-based training providers.
Enhancements in digital actuality, augmented actuality, hologram expertise, and collaboration instruments will make all of that even simpler. Many administrative capabilities will be carried out remotely:
There are a lot of new employment alternatives right here, which may cut back the necessity for migration, and distant working may open the door for girls to entry alternatives commensurate with their expertise by going elsewhere just about, with out shifting bodily. That is particularly necessary in areas the place there are cultural biases towards ladies actively trying to find jobs: platforms have been discovered to assist ladies discover work, and distant working can provide them an necessary veil of anonymity.
UN Information: has the pandemic affected attitudes in direction of migrants?
Gary Rynhart: There was a rise in discrimination, particularly anti-Asian discrimination particularly associated to COVID 19, and a few populist political events have sought to scapegoat migrants (we’ve seen this in Italy, Spain, Greece, France, and Germany, amongst others).
Tumblr media
Hassan Akkad, a BAFTA-winning filmmaker and well being employee from Syria, now residing in the UK., by © Hassan Akkad
However the post-pandemic world just isn’t essentially all unhealthy information, and there are indicators that it might result in new alternatives for migrants, and even improved perceptions.
For instance, many migrants are filling frontline medical roles or offering important providers like stacking grocery store cabinets or cleansing hospitals. Moreover, we have now seen some softening of restrictions on foreign-trained and foreign-born well being staff in high-income international locations to deal with the disaster: refugee docs with out acknowledged {qualifications} had been known as up in Germany, and had recognition of their {qualifications} fast-tracked within the UK, some US States have allowed foreign-trained docs to work, and Australia lifted working hour caps on foreign-trained nurses.
In truth, regardless of latest populist rhetoric, attitudes in direction of migrants have been steadily, and markedly, enhancing lately. Based on a survey of 18 international locations printed final 12 months, 63 per cent of US residents felt immigrants had been a burden on the nation, again in 1994, and solely 31 per cent felt they strengthened it.
Quick ahead 25 years and the figures are reversed. By a ratio of two to at least one US residents are pro-migration.  Based on the identical survey, majorities in prime migrant vacation spot international locations, which host half of the world’s migrants, say immigrants strengthen their international locations. Majorities within the UK, France, Spain, Australia, Canada, Sweden and Germany all agree with the assertion ‘migrants make my nation stronger’.
Perhaps one consequence of this disaster shall be extra inclusivity, and extra variety, within the international office, and an enchancment in a number of the elements that drive individuals to go away their houses and international locations, searching for higher livelihoods.
