The God that Marks Garps Student
Koby was marked. Garp knew the scrawny brat was marked the moment he laid eyes on him.
Koby had a strong sense of Justice and a Protector of the weak.
So, Tsuisu mark wouldn't be surprising. However, by his Background report and his own personal testimony. Koby arrived on Shells with Luffy. And punched Koby declaring him not a member of the now named Strawhat Pirates
Nika's markings wouldn't be out of place either.
The Cadet was kind too. There was a partnership blooming with the blond twigs. He has seen Astrus mark a Dog for its Loyalty.
Astrus' mark might be a stretch. As by some of the Reports he's snooped off of Senny's desk Ace has been making a mess in the New World.
So when he took them onto his ship. He was fully prepared for one of his three Godly Grandsons to show up.
He set about the offerings on the shrines. In his quarters. Knowing none of them could resist a snack after using their abilities to hop to a shrine.
Garp snapped awake when he heard shuffling in his room. He spotted the tails of a coat exiting his room.
It could only be Sabo that came to check on his student.
He bolted towards his Wayward grandson.
"You Get black here you brat." Garp said, running out onto the deck only to see Sabo leep off the ship like an escaping boy after hours.
The half-shaded face looked at him with the usual terror. As he disembarked from the ship.
"Sabo, at least have the decency of a man to say hello to your grandpa!" he shouted after the boy. Sabo would be fine In the water. He could walk on moonlight. But his grandson didn't say anything as he swam away.
" Sir should we go after the stowaway?" One of the twigs on night watch asked.
"No. We'll just lose him in the moonlight. Return to your watch." Garp growled "I'm going back to bed."
" Yes sir." The twig said.

I have a lot of thoughts about this arc (that I haven’t properly been able to share bc I’ve been watching with my roommate and I’m not gonna pause every 10 minutes to write a post and make him wait for me lmao) but first let me fucking start with Garp because BRO……..that trope of being torn between duty and family was played up SO well and the reason that Garp pushed both Ace and Luffy to become marines was so he could avoid this EXACT situation. Because he wanted them to be SAFE and not on the opposite side of such a long lasting war. And him knowing even from that long ago that if he let them become pirates they’d eventually have to face off and he’d be forced to hurt them, his FAMILY, because he’d dedicated his life to the marines. FUCK. I started bawling when he sat on the platform with Ace. Just. The frustration and him knowing he can’t do anything to save his family even though they’re right there within reach. All the memories he had surrounding Ace’s birth and Roger asking him to take care of his son and Garp caring for Ace and for Luffy so so much. AND AFTER ACE DIED……Garp literally asking Sengoku to restrain him bc if he didn’t he was 100% going to kill Akainu for killing Ace. I’m FINE. This is FINE. I’m NORMAL

More for the au!
The basics, Gods, Demigods, Devil Fruits, all exist.
World Gov + Marines try and keep the whole concept of gods and demigods under wraps. Because I'm working with "D's" carry divinity. And having a good chunk of them outright despise the government isn't a great look.
Luffy is a god while Garp and Dragon are demigods. Luffy can shift between physical and 'divine' form whereas demigods don't have that ability.
Luffy is the successor/inheritor of his predecessor's will and own divinity. But not through reincarnation necessarily. One in the same but they are very much so different. His devil fruit and promise to Shanks cemented his place as the successor to the sun and freedom. When gods and demigods start out, there isn't a wholly set future for what will they will have, or the ideals they will embody. Luffy has always had his cloudy/intangible form.
Imagine Garp's surprise when his grandson, who was supposed to join him in the marines, is set to embody freedom and the sun. He was pissed for a solid week about that. Garp also had to deal with questioning where Dragon had even gotten Luffy from, he still doesn't know.
Ace and Sabo were very adamant that Luffy not show off his divine form to everyone, especially if he wanted to become a pirate. He can't be a pirate if the government tracks him down and hides him away at the ripe age of like, 8. Also because having a full god is pretty uncommon, Sabo has heard horror story after horror story of what nobles and those in higher society would do to a god. Sabo is the most vocal about Luffy being careful about that.
Luffy meets Koby, and does an absolutely terrible job at keeping his form hidden. It's harder to control which form he's in when he's excited. Koby was a human with no divinity and big dreams that Luffy adored. So, already excited with a new friend, and the two on their way to Shells town, Luffy sneezed and immediately sold himself out. Koby is a terrible liar and so just elects to never speak on this topic ever. If anyone asks why he has so much knowledge on gods, specifically sun gods, he just doesn't answer. Helmeppo thinks it's funny and immediately pieced together why, because Koby cannot keep anything from him. And Garp has to respect how hard that kid is trying to not completely sell out his grandson, even if the brat kind of deserves it for being a pirate.
Luffy is going to be the Pirate King, divine or not. His crew quickly find out about his side quirk/form in varying ways. Zoro woke up one day with a cloudy demon from hell cutting off his airways. Nami was trying to explain clouds to Luffy and that 'no, they cannot just spawn on your person, that's stupid,' and so Luffy shows her that he is in fact, correct.
Usopp got jumpscared early in the morning, before the sun had risen, when Luffy just appeared behind him and asked if he wanted to watch the sunrise. Sanji was cooking dinner and Luffy got so excited he phased out of his physical body.
Chopper found out while asking Luffy if he had any medical conditions he should know about, he thought it was kinda cool that Luffy can change forms. And is only a little jealous that Luffy has a fully human form. Luffy always makes sure to tell Chopper he's exactly who he needs to be.
Robin found out after talking about 'Nika,' who is thought to be long dead, but is not. And is the captain of the crew she is now apart of. Luffy knows the name is important and it has a certain weight when it's said. He physically feels when someone says his name around him. Robin thinks this is very fascinating. (Also can add some context into poneglyphs, that there is a lot to it, even if Robin doesn't yet know and Luffy wasn't alive/doesn't have that knowledge)
Franky was showing off cool shit he could do with his robotic body, and Luffy was like 'me too!!!'
Brook found out when Luffy fell asleep listening to him play a song, and Luffy slipped back into his resting form of cloudiness.
While both forms have their uses and limitations, Luffy is most comfortable in his intangible form, even if his physical one is the default. He cannot access his divine form after a certain point of exhaustion hits.
Im going to end that there before I have an entire novel in this. But that's the general thought throw up I'm smacking down right now.
Sorry if this is incoherent and not easy to understand lol. I will flesh it out more later and when I have actually thought more about it. Might change things later too. Then I'll probably make a good post about it with actual wellish made context and lore.

Garp Rant #11543
Because I'm something of a Certified Garp Hater/extremely obsessed with this man, and because Tumblr people seem to like my Garp takes and/or find them extremely pain-inducing, here's another one for funsies! Again, Garp is an incredibly written character and I massively enjoy his moral failings and human shortcomings, hence why I won't shut up about how much he sucks. So we all remember Garp crying in front of Ace during his imprisonment and awaiting his execution, lamenting the fact that his son and grandson could have maybe avoided this horrible horrible fate that awaits them at Marineford if they'd just become good marines like he'd tried to press them into. Every time he says it, he sounds more desperate, sadder, and angrier, like he's experiencing the stages of grief and going through denial, anger bargaining all at once, lashing out at his grandkids for supposedly causing him grief by defying his wishes, or maybe praying or wishing for a world where they could have followed in his footsteps and lived happily ever after. And when Ace hears that again at Impel Down, he says this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the thing though: Ace is unequivocally correct Garp should, by all rights, know this. He lived through the fallout of Roger's execution. He knew long before that exactly what would happen to Roger's loved ones and anyone the government could get their hands on who'd ever associated with him. Even before they started committing femicides/infanticides in Baterilla trying to end Roger's bloodline, he knew that the Marines were going to target completely innocent people in the name of purging the bloodline and cementing their "victory" over the greatest threat they'd ever faced. He specifically had to smuggle Rouge out of there so she could give birth to Ace, and all the while dozens of families were being brutalized by his peers and having their lives torn apart. That was the cost the Marines were willing to incur to kill a hypothetical infant, and years later, when that very same child is set to be executed, Sengoku goes on a remorseless public tirade about the necessity of killing babies and the horrible trickery and audacity Rouge displayed by dying so that they wouldn't kill her baby too.
Tumblr media
Garp knows every single piece of this information in painful, excruciating detail. He's so horrified by it he feels the need to fulfill this wish of Roger's because he knows blameless people will die. He has Ace raised in secret to protect him from Marines who are figuratively and literally out for his blood. And yet, throughout this boy's childhood, he clings to the notion that maybe, just maybe, the people he knows regularly commit atrocities, who have carried out at least 3 genocides that we know of in Garp's lifetime, who were willing to commit mass infanticide for a woman and child they hadn't verified the existence or identity of at the time, would have accepted him within their ranks and turned a blind eye to that information when it eventually, inevitably surfaced. That Ace can find salvation from the people who stole every loved one he ever had before he was even born, who slaughtered his mother's community and pushed her to her death, and were slavering at the opportunity to kill her. That even though Ace was born in direct opposition to them, has had a target trained on him before he was born, these people who tried so goddamn hard to kill him would surely welcome his presence and not murder him the second they found out if he could just be a compliant model soldier and make himself useful. It's hammered home pretty effectively–especially in the manga– and One Piece has never been known to be subtle in its messaging, but I swear to God I see so many people echoing the notion that Garp's attempts to force his grandchildren into serving the Evil Empire was done because he knew was their only shot at safety from the WG, and I fucking despise this take. Ace saying that he could never be a marine here in Impel Down isn't some young man's rationalization for his (beyond valid) desire not to subscribe to the preset path Garp laid out for him; it's literally the only logical conclusion if you know literally anything about the circumstances of his birth and upbringing, and Garp only thinks that the leopards wouldn't eat Ace's face because he's fucking delusional This in and of itself is extremely telling of how horribly warped Garp's perception of the Navy is, and how deeply he's willing to buy into the Marines and their warped propaganda no matter how many glaring examples he sees throughout his life that counter his worldview, but let's not forget that this applies to Luffy too. This is slightly hairier, in that if Luffy was a) the sort of person who could willingly accept a career in the marines and b) managed to cling really, really tightly to his grandfather's coattails and legacy, there might have been a very, infinitesimally small chance that he could have joined the Navy. The higher ups know that Dragon is Garp's son and therefore Luffy is Dragon's by logical inference, but I could see some AU where Luffy is a fundamentally different person and manages to build himself up in the Navy if not for two things I think warrant examination. It's pretty evident, and Dragon explicitly confirms, that Luffy being known as his son would have put him in incredible danger, only feeling comfortable with acknowledging it and the possibility of actually reuniting with his child after Luffy was both publicly recognized due to factors beyond his control, and proved that he was more than capable of holding his own. But I want to draw attention to this one otherwise pretty silly little gag moment between Garp and Sengoku when they learn that Luffy's broken into Impel Down, and present a theory that's kind of a reach but also not really
Tumblr media
Now the phrasing here kind of interests me, in that it ties back to earlier demonstrated patterns that the Navy uses repeatedly in collective punishment for the families and loved ones of their primary targets. Rouge and Ace barely escaped the mass murders intended for them because of their connection, but Tom was also originally sentenced to death for having had a connection to Roger, and ultimately chose that as the offence he wanted to be sentenced for at Enies Lobby. Law, as a child survivor of Flevance, has multiple hospitals try and turn him in to the World Government to be killed when Cora tries to find someone to treat him because their policy is to pull out the roots and salt the earth whenever they deem a person or population politically inconvenient. Robin's flashback shows us Akainu blowing up a refugee boat on the off chance that one of those people that they were planning to evacuate might have gotten past their initial screening for archaeologists/poneglyph readers. At Marineford, Akainu specifically targets Luffy not because of his prior offences or even his attempt to rescue Ace, but because he's Dragon's son and his and Roger's bloodlines need to be eradicated. This is not an institution that is in any way reluctant to destroy anyone tangentially affiliated to a designated enemy, and Luffy being the son of the worst criminal in history seems to put him right in line with all of those other cases. In light of this, and Garp's massive blind spots and wishful thinking regarding his peers and employers, it's not that much of a stretch to assume that the only reason Garp's exempt from being targeted like Dragon is because of his popularity/symbolic importance/utility, and that Luffy likely wouldn't have been safe even if he weren't a pirate. Garp's circle of confidantes/friends in high places is powerful, but clearly there are factions (Akainu, Ryokugyu etc) that would be substantially less willing and who are given preferential treatment by the Elders and Celestial Dragons. There might be something to read into based on the fact that Garp is the only known person from a D bloodline who's achieved massive success in service to the World Government and not defected from the Navy after realizing its true nature (props to Saul), and therefore he might project the fact that he's been rewarded by the system despite being a "sworn enemy of the Gods" onto his family, but that still doesn't account for the massive, delusional arrogance he displays in insisting that, despite everything–especially, especially the murders committed in pursuit of Ace, that robbed him of his birth mother and community–the Navy is the best and safest place for either of those boys. TLDR Garp not wanting his grandsons to have a bounties on their heads is one thing, but it says a lot that in spite of everything he knows, he's willing/determined to put Ace and Luffy in an environment that's extremely dangerous for them –and in Ace's case 100%, unquestionably fatal– because he's so convinced that compliance and the platonic ideals of "justice" and military service/hard work being rewarded by the system could supersede all of that.

Monkey D. Luffy.
Garp was a cheeky bastard.
I, Alias Foreman, Swore to be on Monkey D. Luffy's pirate crew when we both turned sixteen and fled to the sea together. I had a dream of becoming one of the most versatile people known to man. I want to learn as much as I can, to cook, to clean, to navigate boats and ships, anything you can teach me I will try my hardest to understand and learn. Now I'm not saying that I want to be the best at everything, there will always be people better. But I want to at least understand the basics of as much as possible. But for all of my life I've been known as a Gunslinger.
I'm ‘The Cheshire Cat’. Cool name with a stupid job. I hate being a Warlord of the Sea, it's the stupidest job on this side of the east blue, and they wouldn't even give me a proper crew. Just a few bumbling idiots who don't know what being a pirate really means.
Luffy always understood what being a pirate meant. I remember watching Garp train him day in and day out. Parts of me understand why Garp was so hard on him, I mean people say he takes after Gold Roger. Imagine your grandson taking after someone you helped execute. I don't think I'd be fond of it either. I’ve never thought Garp nor Luffy were wrong for what they want but, I think one knows what he's doing and the other doesn't.
-
It's always quite bothersome when halfway through my delicious dinner, I get interrupted by a soggy mean fishman running in here and trying to take my table for dinner. If he had waited a few minutes I would've gladly given it up, I just wanted to finish my meal. But the inpatient idiot just had to have it now.
“I'm afraid there are no more tables.” Arlong and two of his crew members were walking down the stairs of the Baratie. They’re bodies are still wet and leaving water as they walk, which is just plain disrespectful. “I see a bunch of tables.” I couldn't help but roll my eyes, to think I would have a peaceful dinner, just hopeful dreaming. People started to whisper and get up from their tables but I stayed in my seat, intending to finish the nice meal served to me. Plus it's not as if they got far, Arlong was yelling at them as soon as he got to the middle of the staircase. “Sit down!” he yelled in his degrading, chalkboard scratching voice. I continued to cut my steak in pieces to eat, they over cooked it a bit but a fine job was done anyways. Seasoned almost perfectly. A little too much oregano, but I'm just too picky with my food. Arlong went around as if he owned the place. “No one leaves.”
He looked at me with malice in his smile. “Except you.” His webbed hand went to grab the collar of my shirt but I stopped it with my own, barely even looking back. “I only have a bite or two left, I'll give it up when I'm done.” I took another drink from my wine and let go of his hand, continuing on with my meal. I could tell it pissed him off from the way he growled close to my ear. A stupid amount of spit landing on my dinner plate and shoulder. I shivered in disgust and stood up from my table. “You know what- take it.” I grabbed my plate and wine and stood up, leaving the small round table for the fishmen to sit at. I felt bad not eating the steak so I got a to-go box from the reservations desk and put it in there to give to someone later. Deciding that maybe i'll get a nice drink from the bar instead.
I was a wine kind of gal so I got a nice glass of Merlot, it was tasty. Had lots of flavor, some of which I enjoyed and some I didn't. I was enjoying the peace. I always knew it wouldn't last long but god was i sad when it was over. “Which one of you is Arlong?” Oh shit. I knew his voice anywhere, the voice I was sent for by his grandfather, the voice of a new age. I got a refill on my wine, and bought the whole bottle while I was at it, due to the lingering feeling that this wasn't going to look pretty.
When I got back into the restaurant I decided to just rest a little under the staircase, hidden by the shadows hopefully. Seeing Luffy again made me nervous. Something about it..something about how he’d be even a little bit different. When I assessed the situation in front of me it confused me a bit. I could hear that Arlong was yelling from the bar but he's an idiot so I tuned it out and tried to enjoy the bit of ‘quiet’ I had. Arlong has an older gentleman by his shirt collar, while Luffy was halfway down the main staircase. He had two men behind him, one named Usopp the other Sanji. I heard about them both, one from a customer here and the other, from a bartender. “So this is the pirate I've heard so much about.” Arlong was starting to circle around some of the tables, pacing I guess. “You know, I was expecting someone… bigger.”
Sounds like my cue. I came out of the shady area setting the wine glass and bottle on the table and grabbing a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from a pocket in my shorts, picking the lucky one and placing it in my mouth delicately. “Tell me about it..I've had someone in my ear all day. ‘Find that dumbass.’ I have a headache at this point.” I laughed and leant on the chair. Luffy looks away from Arlong for a millisecond, to look at me but I don't think it registered in his brain. He couldn't have forgotten me. Luffy spoke, in his normal, nonchalant, Luffy way. “So was I.” I was puffing from my cigarette as I laughed. The snicker making smoke pour out of my nose. That got Luffy's attention. His head snapped to look at me, his eyes didn’t leave me, it looked like he was inspecting every part of my body. Probably looking for the one sign it was me. The small skull shaped scar just above my left knee. I wore shorts today just so he would see it.
His eyes were as wide as the plates they were using to serve that delicious soup I had for an appetizer. “ALIAS?!-” internally I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. Externally, all I could do was smile. Luffy had a bright smile on his cheeks and I couldn't help but smile back. It was a smile I yearned for, for so long. I knew with even a bit of it, I was going to be addicted again.
I could see how excited luffy was that I was here (which made me VERY happy), but Arlong being himself did not like that attention wasn't on him for those few seconds so he cleared his throat obnoxiously. “Do you know who I am, boy?” Luffy's attention went to him but came right back when I spoke up. “Arlong the Saw.” There was a moment of silence, I taped the ash away from my cigarette into an empty glass off the table of people in front of me, and took another drag from it. “And just who are you-” - “I’m The Cheshire Cat.” I undid two of the buttons on my button up shirt with one hand, letting my collar fall back to show off the cat like scratches that laid on my collar bone (If those cats were lions that scratched almost all the way down my torso and arm). I did a stupid little bow. A few people reacted but I enjoyed the way Luffy looked so wowed. Arlongs eyes widened but they just went right back to a dumb smug smile. “You, Arlong, go for 20 million berrys.” I took another drag, exhaling calmly. “Which is impressive for the east blue but..Not so much other places.” He laughed from his chest, his friends going along with it. “What does the sell out have to say about it?” I sighed softly.
A part of me wished I was a sell out, instead of a kidnapped child forced to do the government's dirty work. The other part knew I would never do that, knew I would never betray my own crew like that. “Oh nothing honestly, I don't care about you.” I looked over to Luffy who still had a smile on his face. When we made eye contact he started to beam. I've only visited him once since I became a warlord, it makes me happy to see him so full of joy just from a moment of eye contact with me. “I'm here for him.” Luffy's hands started to shake, it was something small he always did around me. Blurted it out one day, said when I was excited sometimes I gave him a look, a glint in my eye that made him so happy his entire body shook. It was the sweetest thing he’d ever said to me. Arlong growled once again, leaving spit in someone's food. Those poor people.
He was circling the tables to get to me, circling around me slowly as if I was fish bait he was waiting to snap on. “Well I was here first.” I thought about correcting him, telling him that I was in fact here first. But Luffy interrupted the thought anyway. “How’d you find me anyway?” Luffy sounded completely confident in himself, Arlong just let out another horrid chuckle and made his way back to where he originally stood. “Old friend helped me track you down.” At first Luffy looked over to me, but I was drinking a sip of wine, just listening to what was happening in front of me. Arlong clicked his tongue and one of the other fish men grabbed the clown pirate's head out of a bag. “Heya, Straw hat. Did you miss me?” Luffy looked extremely confused, Sanji looked exhausted and Usopp looked terrified. “Burpy?” The name he called him almost made me spit out my wine from laughter (Which made Luffy happy, I could tell because he glanced at me. Even just for a second.) “What are you doing here?”
The fact that there was only a clown head confused and disturbed me, but I looked past it. “Believe me, it wasn't my first choice either.” He looked a bit nervous as he spoke. “But these fine fishy folk persuaded me to point them in the right direction, which ain't easy when you don't have any hands!” The joke made me raise my eyebrows and laugh a bit, it was funny i'll give him that. But Luffy still looked confused. “How’d you even know where to find me?” Suddenly the clown had the most serious expression I've ever seen him in. “I told you, I've got eyes and ears everywhere.” I noticed an ear start to climb out of the red band of Luffys hat. It was quite strange. The ear went back to the clown and popped right back in place, laughing. Luffy took the hat off his head inspecting it, while the two men behind him shared a look. “Stereo!” Luffy looked shocked. “You were listening all along? You heard everything?” The clown was quite happy. “Everything! and that old quick. 'Cause you shi-diots have no idea what you're doing.” The mashup word made me giggle a bit, it sounded so stupid, but it was kinda funny. (But luffy frowned a bit when he saw I laughed so i stopped as quick as i started).
The clown's head jumped towards the fishman with the huge lips. “Hey lips? How about a scratch behind the old ear, huh?” That made me roll my eyes, he was stupid enough to ask his captors that? The fishmen put him back in the bag. Buggy complaining about how sandy and wet it was.
“Listen here. I want my map.” It was so stupid. Watching them fight over the map to the entrance to the grand line, I understand why Luffy wanted it, but Arlong has a giant crew of thieves who could easily take it from another marine base. “Along with half of whatever you plunder as tribute.” Tribute? for getting a map, does he want tribute for his own existence now? “And if you bow down to me, I might even let you serve in my kingdom.” Stupid men. All of them were the same. Well not all, but most were extremely similar. “I don't bow down to any man.” Luffy stood tall, his head held up high as usual. That's my boy. “I'm no man.” Luffy continued. “Or fish.” That made Arlong growl and made me laugh. “And you’re no king.” There was a certain feeling in the air, the aggression that at any moment, one or the other would attack. Everyone was on high alert, my wine made that hard. It was just so delicate. Hard to enjoy in this environment but perfect in others.
“I will be, when I get my grand line map.” Luffy just smiled, which was a little bit attractive. “Then” He placed his hat back on his head. “You’re gonna have to fight me for it.” I take the attractive comment back, he's stupid. “Then let the fighting begin.” A bullet bounced off the fishmans skin. My hands almost drew closer to my own guns but instead I decided to pour another glass of wine. The old man that cooked my food was standing with a gun in his hand, the trigger pulled in his fingers clutches.
The thing about fishmen (I had learned the hard way) is that regular bullets don't affect them. I have very special bullets, made from some weird unmeltable ice, something about them coming from a town inside the grand line called drum town, from the deepest parts of frozen lakes. They're so sharp they even pierce fishman skin but don't go as deep as I would like.
Arlong turned to the old man, one of his crew members kicking him away and down before punching him into a pillar. Sanji called out his name and ran over, jumping on the table and kicking the fishman in the face. Which just pissed him off more. He got a few good kicks to the face and arms, even the legs but Luffy distracted him. “Really good fighter.” By the time he went to do a quite nice spinning kick to the face again, he caught his foot in his arm. I reached for both guns in my holsters, Checking that they had the correct bullets and shot multiple rounds from Alice, all of them making a trail up his arm and letting Sanji get away. The fishman looked back at me, anger and confusion in his eyes. “These bullets are made of ice, so sharp they even pierce fishman skin. I got them specially made.” There was a delicate smile on my lips, blowing the smoke out of my mouth and away from my guns. Normally i wouldn't touch these but i had a feeling about bringing them today, i'm glad i did. they may be expensive but Luffy was worth it anyways.
Everything was happening so quickly, Luffy's gum gum pistol, Arlong grabbing and pulling him closer. “Uh-” I could tell there was panic in his voice, but I couldn't tell if helping would really be helping at all. He was thrown at a pillar, landing on the floor with a thud. “Get up!” Arlong yelled, if i was him i would've stayed on the floor in spite, but he got up regardless. He kept stretching his arms three punches, one to each shoulder and one to the face. “Not bad for a human.”
I lifted my pistol to shoot Arlong but luffy put his hand up, his middle and ring finger were intertwined and the other three fingers touched. That was our sign when we were kids to stay out of it. It was our secret signal, not even Ace or Sabo or Dadan knew what it meant. I lowered my pistol, spinning it and putting it back in its holster. I grabbed the wine bottle taking a nice big gulp. Glad i’d gotten the entire bottle because this in fact, was not going to be pretty.

Here's a thought. What if growing up as a kid in an AU in a cold country, Luffy claims he has a big fluffy leopard friend called meow-meow who keeps him company and listens to him and his problems.
Yes, meow-meow is Law in his snow leopard form. Yes, I'm finally doing a childhood AU! I have so much lore for this. I'll share wips in due course.
Also, I caved and started writing SaboAce! Lots of ASL lore in this fic!
This is a long one, so strap iN!!
Despite being besties, Ace and Luffy weren't very close back in the day. That may be surprising to onlookers but it made sense then. Ace had a sort of inferiority complex over not being a 'legitimate' grandson and lashed out at Luffy over that.
Feeling lonely and bullied, Luffy ran away from home a lot. Not like Ace or even Garp cared. They had their own shit to worry about.
One day after a particularly bad argument, Luffy ran to the forest without even brining a weapon. It was dinner time. Ace ate all of his share of the porridge out of spite and Luffy furiously said that if Ace hated him that much, maybe it'll be better if Luffy just ran off and got himself killed.
Ace flipped him off and said that it didn't matter either way.
And here's Luffy, alone, cold and hungry in a place he doesn't even know. It's snowing now. People at school told him that it'll snow more nowadays and that he should stay inside. Did Luffy listen? No. Did Luffy want to listen? Nah.
Luffy was cold and shivered a lot by himself, that is, until a small snow leopard cub came towards him. He looked small and helpless but there's a fierceness in its eyes that scared Luffy. It looked like Ace's eyes.
"If you hit me, I'll eat you."
A growl.
Luffy frowned. He heard that even snow leopards have families. He wondered where this one was. Luffy wondered who's more violent—female or male ones. It didn't matter either way: Luffy would beat 'em up and eat 'em whole!
"Where's your friends? Don't you have any? Y-you can't eat me!"
Another growl.
Luffy looked around and he didn't sense anyone, or anything else there. If Luffy looked closer, he saw that he looked...
"Are you lonely?"
Silence. The little guy looked away, as if embarrassed. Luffy smiled for once and reached out to poke his nose. The guy sneezed. Ah. Luffy laughed for the first time in months, probably.
"You're like me, aren't you?" Luffy said softly. And then with the courage Luffy never had to face Ace, Luffy said, "You're like me! Let's be friends! Where do you live? I don't wanna go home. Ace's always mean to me."
And with the compassion Ace never had, the little guy agreed. He picked up Luffy's shivering body with his blunter teeth and took him back to his cave, a modest thing with a small fire and some fish. Luffy ate it and fell asleep quickly. The cub tried to wake Luffy up to chastise him but gave up quickly. He fell asleep too.
The next morning, Luffy was found by his home. Traitor! That cat told him he could stay! Anyways, that's one thing. The bigger problem is Ace was sitting there, right next to him.
"Ace...?"
Ace woke up at that. His bloodshot eyes made him look a bit insane like he's not really aware of what's going on. Ace sniffled.
"There's bear meat in the fridge. Cook it yourself." Luffy saw that Ace had scratch marks on his arms. Ace stood up and left before Luffy could ask more questions.
At least Ace didn't slam the door like he used to. Luffy was unsure whether to be relieved or afraid.
The next few days were tame. Ace was still quiet but he wasn't as angry at least. Ace even talked to Luffy about things he learnt in school and offered to teach him how to read. Ace was a good teacher, even if irritable and impatient. Luffy decided he need not be as afraid.
Alongside Ace being nicer to him, Luffy also snuck out to meet the cub more. To be fair, Ace knew but didn't say anything. With some heartache, he understood this sneaking out was something like payback so he let it be. But God Damn it, could Luffy be more subtle!
Picking flowers, catching frogs, hoarding pretty rocks. "Bro," Ace complained to his friend Sabo, "Is Luffy meeting up with a girlfriend-slash-boyfriend-slash-genderless-significant-other or a fucking cat in the woods?" Ace tried not to snicker when he finally 'caught' Luffy.
Understandably, Luffy got defensive.
"I'm hanging out with a friend and you aren't invited!" If anything, Ace seemed amused by that outburst. He smiled. Luffy saw why Ace kept getting girlfriends. Ace is quite handsome.
"Is it that cat?" Ace said. This is the first time Ace spoke to him in a not unkind way. Luffy unconsciously nodded. "Yeah, sure. Go ahead."
Luffy didn't know what to say. Ace said okay? For real? No catch?
"Introduce us some time. I need to thank him for saving your ass. He's the one who keeps bringing you back whenever something goes wrong. Tell him I said thanks. That's all."
"Ace-" Luffy looked like he'd cry when Ace pat his head and told him to come back in one piece.
"Have fun." Ace looked awkward as he finally said Luffy's name for the first time, "Luffy."
Luffy laughed and ran off. Oh boy did he have GREAT news to share with his new friend!! The cub tried his best to be pleased but he lost track somewhere and resorted to using his tail to stroke Luffy's face for the rest of the day. Luffy found it cute and ticklish.
Since that day, they meet up a lot, almost every day. Sometimes, they even meet at Luffy's house. It's on one such hang out that Ace formally admitted that he had a crush on someone.
Luffy was in the kitchen cutting meat and the cub was spread out on Ace's lap. Ace had so much fun stroking his fur that he simply blurted out, "I like Sabo. I wanna ask him out. What do you think?"
The cub looked up keenly. Ace supposed this one's probably smarter than Sabo but still pretty chill. Maybe Luffy was onto something for liking this one so much.
"Do you reckon I have a chance? Blink once for yes and twice for no."
He blinked twice easily. Ace punched him on the head. Luffy saw this violence and cried, hugging meow-meow protectively.
"Leave meow-meow alone! He didn't do anything wrong!"
"He said Sabo wouldn't go on a date with me!"
"Meow-meow doesn't know who Sabo is but he knows Sabo doesn't like bullies!" To prove a point, Luffy stuck his tongue out. "Bleh!"
Ace got mad and walked out. "Well, fine! I'll show you twerps what's up! I'll ask him out right now! Just you watch!"
Luffy and the cub cuddled on the couch when Ace came back a few hours later, hand-in-hand with a new fr-, no boyfriend called Sabo. Sabo seemed nice. He waved at Luffy and said meow-meow was cute. Luffy found it amusing that Ace looked shy but happy. Luffy had the feeling that Sabo would become someone important...
So, the routine nowadays is that Sabo would go over to study with Ace while Luffy would play with meow-meow in the living room. If it got too cold, everyone would gather around meow-meow for warmth.
It was wholesome and everyone gets closer or whatever. That is, until one day, Garp showed up after six months of being an MIA deadbeat. Imagine his surprise to find:
Ace and Luffy willingly sitting together.
A third blonde child resting on Ace's shoulder, contentedly reading a book full of words Garp didn't understand.
A fucking snow leopard sleeping on the living room floor
All three children lying back against said snow leopard.
Garp could either be calm and ask Ace what's going on or pretend nothing happened and make small talk. Instead, he pointed to Ace and the blonde child and said, "YOU TWO BETTER NOT BE UP TO NO GOOD!"
Luffy stood up first. "Nuh-uh! Ace and Sabo play with me and meow-meow! They're good boys! I like them!"
Ace look like he's going to cry at the sudden confession. Sabo woke up and quickly hugged Ace to comfort him. Garp got even more livid.
"Look at that. These kids are immoral nowadays. They're rushing things and doing things they shouldn't be doing!"
Luffy was about to stand up for them again but Ace told Luffy to sit back down. Sabo looked like he knew what's going to happen next.
"Shut up, you stupid old man. Sabo and I will fuck when we want to." Ace would flip Garp off but then a bushy white tail wrapped around his hand. What? Ace wasn't cold. Meow-meow had a habit of doing that whenever he thought anyone of the ASL trio was cold.
It seemed that Sabo was the only one who actually understood what meow-meow wanted to do.
"What do you even know? I haven't given any of you the talk!"
Ace was ready for this! "I know that either Sabo or I will get on top and from there we-" Meow-meow's tail went down, wrapped around Ace's hip and clutched. Since when was meow-meow this strong? Ace was more impressed than embarrassed. He cringed. Oh fuck, he's going through character development.
Garp merely laughed.
"Well! Looks like you can't do anything!" Garp said with triumph. Then, as suddenly as he came, he said he'd get some food and left them be.
Luffy wanted to scold meow-meow. Why did he hurt Ace so suddenly? Was meow-meow jealous? Meow-meow never looked like the type but then meow-meow looked so lonely. Luffy was upset that meow-meow never said anything. Was meow-meow making him choose between them? Why-
"Don't cry, Luffy," Sabo said. "Meow-meow's protecting Ace."
Luffy was dumbfounded.
"He's making sure that Ace doesn't run his mouth and get in trouble with Garp," Sabo said kindly. "He gets defensive over me and talks back to our teachers and gets in trouble even though he didn't do anything wrong."
"Is meow-meow making sure Ace doesn't get in trouble for protecting Sabo?"
"Yup!" Sabo gave Luffy a thumbs up as Ace groaned in pain. "Protect meow-meow too, okay, Luffy? Meow-meow loves you a lot."
"Uh-huh!"
As if he understood all that, meow-meow raised his tail and stroked Luffy's face, tickling him. Luffy started laughing. Luffy loved meow-meow too!

Every time it gets reenforced how scared the government is of the D clan to the point that multiple people have hidden their connection because the government tries to kill them over it (Law, The Nefertitis, Clover) it makes me think about them letting Garp join them. Garp’s a D, everyone knows who Vice Admiral Garp is he’s the Hero of the Marines Garp the Fist, and that likely saved his family. The Marines kill people for being D’s. But The Hero of the Marine’s family? They get a pass as long as they don’t break any laws (and become Marines and use their incredible strength for the might of the Celestial Dragons) though not a single one of them has any interest in that.
Garp’s position definitely protected Luffy when he was a kid. Sengoku was already aware of his parentage, Kuzan had to have at least suspected it, and yet the Goa Kingdom wasn’t destroyed in a Buster Call. Luffy wasn’t hunted because of his name when people in the Marines knew Luffy was the son of the World’s most wanted Man. Luffy looks so much like a young Garp it would be impossible to say they aren’t biologically related. Sengoku knew his so called best friend was harboring a “Devil child” but he let it slide. Out of what was likely both out of care for Garp and the chance of Luffy ending up like Garp. Garp is an asset for the Marines risking the future by not having anyone to fill those shoes (the way Koby is trying to) was likely considered worth it. After all Garp’s son is already the most wanted man in the world what’s his grandson going to be compared to that? Pirate King? Joy Boy? The Sun God Himself?

how u charactirize the relationship between garp & ace? i personally think theyre quite complicated cause they love each other to the end of the world but also ace needs the touch of someone who is gentle enough to not break the fragile inside of his shell, which is something garp is just NOT dealing with. its a vicious circle where ace believes its his own fault for being so difficult while garp feels frustrated as he watches his grandson dig deeper into the hole.
this has been a bit of a ramble ... my apologies.
No, please, I love rambles! Rambling together is literally one of my top communication methods!
Right, so, I love Garp. He's such a shithead, but that's exactly what he's supposed to be. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, he's the reformist who can't stomach admitting that the entire system is flawed. Up close, he's a 'tough love, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, this is the way the world works' kind of guy, but he has to be like that precisely because he's a reformist. If he weren't like that—if he ever elected to wake up and smell the government-sanctioned genocide—his entire world would collapse, and he would have to face all the monumental, misguided fuck-ups he's made. If he's not a good man who has always tried his best for the sake of justice (however cruel that justice may be), then he's just a coward whose inaction (and sometimes direct action) has actively hurt his own family, and he can't face that.
Garp's relationships with Luffy and Ace reflect his thinking so clearly, but especially with Ace. Ace is a symbol of everything that goes against the system Garp is upholding, but he's also a victim of that system; it's more convenient for Garp to sequester him away and tell himself everything will be fine than it is to admit that Ace needs more. In my eyes, Garp absolutely loves Ace—in fact, I think his handling of Ace is so poor because of how much he loves him; Garp and Roger were friends, and Ace is his legacy.
Like you say, it's absolutely a viscous cycle between them. Garp, having all these complicated feelings, tries to prepare Ace for the people who will undoubtedly have similar feelings. Ace, a young boy who already feels like he doesn't fit in the world (no thanks to his unconventional upbringing), spirals every time Garp refuses to step up for him. I think a part of Garp hopes he can scare Ace into joining the Marines but, of course, he does the exact opposite.
As for Ace, he definitely loves Garp, and that's why I think Garp really did a number on him. Of course, Ace has Dadan, but she isn't a great parental figure. (Don't get me wrong, I love her and I know she loves Ace, but she's more like that cool, older babysitter that doesn't give it a shit what the kids do, as long as they're not dead.) Garp is the one who's supposed to be looking after Ace, and Ace knows that. He sees the lack of effort and care, and the way Garp can't really look at him. I bet Garp's infrequent comings and goings were harder for Ace to bear than simply being left alone.
This isn't even acknowledging that Garp's treatment of Ace isn't just neglectful, but absolutely callous. Telling a young boy that "only time will tell if he deserves to live" isn't just fatalistic, it's fatal. Ace takes this message to mean, "No actions I can take will have a bearing on the worth of my life," so he's robbed of his hope, of his desire to live; he thinks everything is pre-determined by the people around him, even his identity.
(Yet Ace goes about his life with utter patience and kindness anyway because he knows what it's like to go without them and he's desperate for love. God fucking damn it, Garp. You broke the boy.)
Anyway, I could go on, but I've said enough. Geez, now I'm the one apologising for rambling so much! Sorry! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
PS. I know I said in another ask that my favourite characters were Ace, Luffy, Shanks, Mihawk, and Robin, but... I think Garp is up there, actually. Then again, so are Jinbe and Law and Kuma, so, really, I'm just full of shit.

One Piece Live Action Ep3 Tell No Tales
I'm going to trust Oda in everything now. I'll let him name my child.
Cause Syrup Village was my least favorite story in East Blue arc but that changed.
Like it got me thinking. Oda submits his stories weekly. He's limited when it comes to editing his work. So imagine what One Piece could be if he could fine tune it and has all the time in the world to edit. God that's a tease.
Tumblr media
Why is the Strawhat jollyroger Luffy version not on sale yet
Tumblr media
I commented this before but I firmly believe that Garp took in Coby because his two grandsons are pirates and his son is the most wanted man in the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Merry flashbacks ... I'm not ready for Enies Lobby when we get there
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When your captain is all about his dreams and just goes with the flow, some have to pick up the pace.
Love Zoro and Nami just doing it for him so their captain can live freely as he wishes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Captain Kuro really did his work. I love the changes they made with the staff already being part of the Black Cat pirates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Usopp and Kaya... didn't expect the escalation but good for him. They were two interesting characters that deserve a little bit of their own story
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dynamic of the three are building and the strawhats that I love are starting to bloom in them
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The key to Luffy is always through his stomach
Tumblr media
I honestly think Kaya was already convinced. Luffy was damn charismatic in this scene. Talking about his dreams that you just want to give in to his wants. No matter how selfish he was
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glad they had Garp chasing Luffy around. He was an East Blue vice-admiral, I wanted to see him more at East Blue doing his thing
Tumblr media
I was thinking that we'd see Arlong near the end of the season. Establishing him now was a good choice. And having him interact with Buggy suggesting pirates know each other was a good addition
Tumblr media
The Nami and Kaya friendship was unexpected but I enjoyed it. Nami always built a friendship around other women in the show. With Vivi, Robin, and Shirahoshi. So another like this is quite nice to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Koby having a bigger role here instead of saving his next appearance for later was a good choice.
Tumblr media
BONUS
My denden mushi appreciation
It coughed! Ohmgod! Makes me think about the den den mushi at Enies Lobby

Garp and his three Godly Grandsons
It had been months since Kolby and Helmepo became his students. They both were exceptional. Koby was ignorant of that mark of Tsuisu left on him.
"Koby, do you know of the ancient gods of the world?" Garp questioned across the Wei Chi boared
"Not all of them, sir." Koby siad "I know there are multiple. But the one I'm fermilar with is Nika."
It was understandable. The kid was trapped for 2 years on a pirateship. Nika was an obvious choice for a situation like his.
Garp thought of his own mark that all three of the little rascals admitted to doing, but some instinct said there could only be one. His bet was that Astrus did it.
"Well, they are more than Myth Koby." Garp fished in his drawer for the gift Sabo left in his quarters. Without saying hello again.
"This is a collection of their mythos it helps to be at least familiar of their stories."
"Thank you, Sir." Acepted the book.
"Don't let anyone else read it." Garp warned
When he finally encountered the runaway Luffy, he saw the moment Koby entered Luffy's sight.
Luffy shouted in the ancient tongue. Garp wouldn't be surprised if it translated to (Tsuitsu you theif )or (bastard ). Luffy wrapped his stretchy limbs around Koby wailing.
Garp sighed. " Luffy yes I know your brother marked him. Now will you just let go." He grabbed Luffy by the scruff.
"But Koby was going to be Mine" Luffy wailed.
"Not another god scuffle," Garp groaned " don't attack your brother for this Luffy. we can't have another Storm like the one you and that other kid had over Shanks."
"Koby!"
Fist of Love!
Luffy stopped crying. Clutching his head but had released his student.
"Old Man what was that for?" Luffy accused.
"Scram before I have to arrest you Brat!"
.~°~.
It was close to a month latter when Astrus appeared on his ship. Feet kicked up on his table. Shackled.
"what's this I hear about Sabo swippeing a mark from Luffy?" Ace said. Unbothered by the chains around him.
"Ace please go back to the Cell. I can't deal with you slipping out."
"Come on Gramps tell me The details "
"How did you come to this information?" Garp said. Knowing that there was no messenger god running around. As far as he knew.
"Jimbe mentioned that the Revolutionary's God was smug about something."
Garp growled hiding his face in his hands. "Promised me you won't get into a fight over this with your brothers."
"Shit, it's That bad."
"Yes, I would rather not experience what two of you can do, with your gathered powers." The event he was talking about was long before he reunited Nika with his elder brothers. It was when Nika and Kanato fought over Shanks and his crew. A giant storm picked up where they were. That was with them confined to the bodies of children and Minor miracles. Garp really didn't want to find out what fully functional Gods could do.
" Fine I promise I won't fight my younger brothers over this." Ace swore holding his followers sign of promise.
"It's my new student. He arrived at his conscription post with Luffy. But at some point before I arrived. Sabo marked him. " Garp said.
"Once someone is marked there's not much to fight over. Unless their multi attuned. Then it's a matter of persuasion to shift the mark from one to their preference." Ace shrugged "Has there been any Gifts delivered?"
"Yes a book on Mythology of you all, and A sun pendant from Nika." Garp said.
Ace grinned wickedly. Producing a small book on star navigation. From nowhere.
" Give that to your student." Then the God of the Stars vanished. Laughter remaining behind.
"Roger you're a Bastard that left me to deal with your consequences" Garp groaned.
Yet he loved his Grandsons. That also happened to be millennia older than him. They were all Gods after all.

So far, the father daughter resemblance is mainly that they both like to mess with Luffy due to his relatively low intelligence. He keeps trying to win games against them and they just cheat 😭
But lord is Uta relatable. She wants to live inside herself (which given her power makes sense). But that desire to want to escape reality in favor of your own dreams and the world you create inside your head? I am inclined to think this girl has depression.
I can see why ASL+U is such a popular AU. She would have fit in well with that dynamic and it all happens around the same time. I mean Luffy and Uta almost get eaten by a sea king out of sheer stupidity. They beat up three or four grown mountain bandits together. And she bullies Luffy in that loving older sibling way. All very ASL things to do.
I'm kinda surprised that Shanks already had the gum gum no mi when he first arrived at foosha. A) He brought a 9 year old along to attack CP0? B) I always thought Luffy ate it as soon as they brought it back, given Shanks left it out on the counter of Makino's bar. Did he just always carry it around with him even after months?
Very impressed with 7 year old Luffy not buying Shanks's lie that Uta left to become a singer. He knew she loved Shanks too much to do that and actually got mad at Shanks. He trusted and missed his friend ❤️
This is also the first time we're really getting to see Beckman. I couldn't tell if him intimidating the bandits was meant to be conqueror's haki or not. Or possibly just that the bandits were easily intimidated given they got beat up by two children the day before.
I liked seeing all the flashback East Blue kids and their families again. But wow the whole world thinking that Shanks killed everyone on Elegia. Even Garp and Sengoku, who know it has something to do with Tot Musica, blaming Shanks and saying "Rogers would be crying if he knew." (Which is rich coming from the kings of making hypocritical decisions). Also Garp DO YOU KNOW WHO YOUR GRANDSON IS WITH RIGHT NOW? DO YOU? GOD!
My understanding is that the flashback is canon per Oda, but the movie Red (which I'll watch a bit later) is not.

Alright one last sun's personality au Luffy and Garp interaction idea.
Nika taking full control of Luffy and talking to Garp
HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE-- Switching to the au timeline where Luffy let's Nika take control at Marineford and Ace survives!
Garp saw what was going to happen, saw Luffy collapse from god knows what he went through breaking in and out of Impel Down. Saw Akainu change his target, saw Ace realize. The marine's chin was pressed even more forcefully into the ground while Sengoku and Buda argued - Garp could only hear Senny's side, but his arguments were getting weaker.
Ace aimed to stop the blow with his own body - why? Why is it one or the other? Why can't his grandsons both make it out? Why is he still clinging to his job? He pushed against the hand on his head, but Sengoku only pulled back and slammed his skull into the ground again, enough to make him nauseous and his vision crawl for a minute.
hahahAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
No. Senny had gone quiet, Garp jerked his head to see his boys better. His heart shifted to follow a drum beat in his ears, Luffy's devil fruit laughed like it had won, fist still raised from where it punched Ace out of the way. The lump of magma Akainu had managed to hit him with before he was knocked away festered in Luffy's chest though his devil fruit didn't seem to notice. It couldn't mean Luffy was gone - it couldn't, but Garp's never seen a devil fruit's soul take over so completely. Did that mean Luffy's soul was lost? Body still moving, but his brain dead enough his devil could use his corpse?
He didn't care if every marine was corrupt, he didn't care if the whole system crashed and burned with the inbred descendants of those who made it. "Sengoku." He said hoarsely. "Let me go."
Sengoku only pressed him down harder. "You're not thinking straight."
Garp wanted to yell, wanted to beat the fuck out of Sengoku, wanted scoop up his grandson again and let him hide in his shoulder until the devil in his head stopped scaring him. Wanted to tell Ace he was proud the brat was never cruel to the world like it was cruel to him. Wanted to get up and follow the devil piloting Luffy's body and know the second Luffy was okay. He just wanted to be a grandfather again.
But the ships dissapeared, and Sengoku kept holding him down, only letting go when the ships dissapeared. Only when Helmeppo found him, shaking like a leaf, and told him Coby stowawayed on the submarine Luffy was on. Because Coby was a better man than Garp would ever be.

Will Garp Return As Zombie? Spoilers for One Piece 1087+88
Few things before my deep dive:
I have no sympathy for Garp.
Koby, good job being the kind boy you are. You deserved a better world.
Tumblr media
But, we all know, one good apple makes no difference when it’s left in the company of a rotten buffet.
Disappearance is not equal to final death
Tumblr media
Pretty sure, Odachii is going to bring Garp back with a lost arm or a leg or lost soul in zombified form.
What I mean to say is—if Blackbeard got Gekko Moria’s powers or subjugated him to be his underling, Garp’s corpse will be a great addition to his arsenal.
It will be a great battle for Luffy, psychologically speaking. We all know he never got to sit and talk or punch and scream with Garp about the shared grief of losing Ace.
Only Garp knows what Luffy felt after losing his big brother, but Luffy doesn’t know what Garp felt after the death of a grandson he could’ve saved.
I am sure Luffy has been angry, and he would’ve definitely punched Garp until both were bleeding if they had a reunion but, Luffy would’ve never wanted his only family that he knew since his birth to die.
Now imagine the pain and grief and hurt he will have to overcome to fight his grandpa’s corpse.
It will pierce Luffy’s heart by 1000 cuts, because whatever chances of closure they had, it is no more.
The only hope from this battle for us as readers will be the last remaining consciousness of Garp’s body gaining some control, like how Victoria Cindry’s corpse did during the Thriller Bark Arc.
Since Garp has more will power, maybe he will apologize or ask Luffy to let go of his affection and end him. With that, the last of Luffy’s anger with for good, once Garp dies, and he embraces the fury of the sun god that resides in him; its final show down.
Because we know Blackbeard vs Luffy is going to be about Ace, but if it is about Ace and Garp, Luffy will have a really hard time winning. And most probably this fight will be part of the final war we have been building towards.
As my friend put:
“I can totally see Goda doing that. Luffy beats the crap out of his zombie grandpa, who with his dying breath gives Luffy the apology he’s been owed since Marineford.
And, because symmetry, he does it during the biggest war SINCE Marineford.
There’s also something horribly, appropriately Goda about the idea that Luffy’s first “kill” would be laying a zombie Garp to rest…”
Now time for Anti-Garp Hate Rant! You can stop reading
Yeah, bet your future on the corrupt institution that protects the scum of the world.
Tumblr media
My thoughts after this panel.
I hope you rot in hell.
Hero my foot.
Don’t disappear. Just die.
Look, Monkey D Garp is a well written character! And trust me, I understand his position too well; his behaviour and actions are not new to me in fiction!
“Wise overpowered old men helping the wrong side” are very common in Indian/Asian Epics who have pulled similar bullshits in name of duty/justice/greater good. Who later get killed by trickery is everywhere, read Mahabharata or Ramayana, it is full of Garps.
But his decision to not help Ace escape but run after Koby all across the Grandline is enough to fuel my anger against him.
Tumblr media
This panel Fuelled my rage further. As my friend put: "All lives are equal, except pirate lives, apparently."
Some argue Garp did everything to let Luffy get close to saving Ace on purpose. He did everything he legally could do. And if he saved Ace, the peace and protection his name brought to Windmill Village would be lost, and it would become the target of Pirates and Marines alike. Sounds plausible, but it's in the realm of speculation.
Old men in a position of power, refusing to intervene when they could’ve, have always used morally superior sounding arguments to get away from being held accountable.
Pushing Ace tragedy aside, If Garp was so strong why didn’t he stop Blackbeard when he had time?
He is no better than Bhishma Pitama from Mahabharata.
I am talking about the two years after Marineford.
What stopped him? He saw Blackbeard wield two DFs, did he and Sengoku only had the duty to protect Marineford? Why did he wait two years? Why didn’t he go after them himself?
Right after Marineford, he should’ve nipped evil in the bud by hunting down Blackbeard. What was holding him back then? The Grief of losing Ace still? Worry about missing Luffy?
Blackbeard is a Pirate, his enemy— who had two of the most powerful DFs in the world. What stopped him? Garp is the only one who could’ve fought because all he needed was Haki! What moral reasoning he had to not wreak havoc to stop this pirate?
Did World Government stop him because Blackbeard became a Yonko?
Tumblr media
We now know how strong Garp is, so it was not a question of being injured after the war, we also know he cares not for permission or authority!
Tumblr media
So why waste two years?
Only when his favourite student is kidnapped is when he felt the need to intervene.
If it's so-called sense of duty towards the future that made him bet his life on young navy; I am calling it bullshit.
I don’t care for whatever justification he has; if he could fight Blackbeard pirates head-on, he should’ve done it sooner and not let him gain so much power and let him terrorize the world.
I was really hoping that Blackbeard broke his spine. In the end, it's pathetic, he didn’t even die (not confirmed) at hands of Blackbeard.
How did his inaction help the powerless masses he swore to protect?
Who is Garp the hero supposed to represent? Isn’t it Justice? Who is he as a marine supposed to protect? Isn’t it the masses? Who is funding his salary? The taxes collected from masses.
In the end who is he serving?
The Gorosei and Celestial Dragons— yes, he hates them, but his indirect actions or refusal to fight them helped change nothing.
His inaction kept the status quo is intact!
Garp is nothing but a glorified a sell-out too! A poster boy of rebel with a good heart that Marine can capitalize for their propaganda.
You cannot change the world for better if you are part of the system that makes the world a bad place.
I hope he becomes a Zombie under Blackbeard!

I get that Ruby is supposed to be the protagonist and therefore drive the plot by making her own decisions and mistakes, but GOD is it annoying to have Qrow, a supposed adult with years of experience, someone who should stand out among the mcs and set an example, to not have a say in those decisions and be as deadbeat npc as the others, just because he's still sad over being betrayed by Ozpin and he sees Summer in Ruby or whyever the hell he decides to place all bets in Ruby's judgement. Like who are you again? Sir, wake up, this isn't a dry run, the state of the world is at stake. Her repercussions are the failure of your oversight.
If Qrow had died in Vol 4 or 5, a lot of the problems in Atlas (*cough* Clover's death *cough*) would've been solved so much sooner or never existed at all. Unfortunately, like with many other characters in this show, CRWBY doesn't fucking know what they want from Qrow.
His consistency has been one of the worse in the cast, with his alcoholism initially being written as a joke to now being something so crippling to him that he cannot properly function even though the story wants us to believe this dude was skilled enough for Ozpin to have as a scout and entrust the protection of Amber to him.
His relationships with his team and supposed allies are never made clear; yeah, we know that he and Raven see each other as enemies, but what about the other aspects of that fallout? Was he hurt by her leaving? Did she regret it? Nope, Raven didn't even hesitate to talk shit about him to his niece and attempted to kill him in Mistral. What about Summer? Fans speculated that he was her partner and possibly in love with her because of how much he deifies her to her daughters, but CRWBY never had the balls to actually confirm their relationship beyond teammates and how her death affected him. And holy shit, him and Tai barely interact even though they are the only ones left from STRQ which is just teeming with character-building opportunities here.
Hell, even his relationship with his nieces has been delegated to "them lecturing and even attempting to fight him", even though he should be the one fucking protecting, mentoring, and guiding them through a FUCKING CRISIS. Ruby and Yang are nowhere near the level of experience required to handle basic Huntsman protocols, as seen in how quickly Yang throws her commanding officer under the bus to someone infamously stealing government supplies that were being used to help Atlas, and with Ruby seeing anyone opposing her naivete that led to the destruction of said kingdom as the enemy who should be put down like dogs.
Qrow bloats the narrative so much that I cannot wait until Tyrian puts another load of venom into him and makes sure he stays down. If you really, REALLY wanna see a mentor character with flaws and opposing ideologies to their apprentice who also happens to be family, leading to conflicting narrative points that you can understand both of their perspectives, look at One Piece's Garp and his turbulent relationship with his grandsons.

Sal's snippets #26
Garp was very well aware that he couldn't keep the three boys, that sooner or later the Marines would find out and his hands would be tied. He didn't want to give them up. But he had no choice. "You do know what you are asking of me?" He didn't look at the being next to him, give who and what she was? It felt like blasphemy to look at her. "I know, but I cannot protect them. If the Marines find out? I will be unable to do anything." There was a sigh and he heard her move, yet he still didn't look at her. "Out of everyone who has joined the Marines? You are one of the few who still uphold my papa's values and beliefs. If anyone else had summoned me? I would have ignored them. But I answered because it was you." Garp swallowed, he knew that the Marines were not what they once were. But to hear her say it? It was jarring, unnerving and unsettling. He also knew that it didn't mean anything good. "I will do this for you because you asked and it is only because you asked." Relief surged through him at the knowledge that she was accepting, that his grandsons would be safe. No one would ever be able to hurt them. "Thank you." There was a breeze and he felt fingers comb through his hair before there was a soft sigh and she disappeared. --- Time he found was a strange thing, he was still able to visit his grandsons, but it was never when he expected it. Or when it had been arranged. Other than the first few times he had seen them? They were flourishing, they were doing so much better under her care than they had been his. He wasn't bitter about it, he hadn't been able to give them the home life that they had deserved. He knew that. He had tried, but he was a better Marine than he was a father or grandfather. But it eased something inside of him to see them doing so well.
He knew that he was lucky, that if he hadn't been who he was? Then she would never have answered his summons. She was much like her father in that regard, many over the years had tried to summon him. Only to fail. Perhaps that was why many in the Marines had stopped worshipping the God of Justice, despite having Justice on their backs. Less and less of them believed and many of them had became more corrupt as the years went by. But he had never faltered. In the end? He had been rewarded. Not that he would tell anyone, the last thing he wanted was for them to think that they could be rewarded for their lack of belief. He had no desire to let any of them taint one of the few things that still brought him joy, that still brought him some semblance of peace. To serve the God of Justice? It was to serve the common people. To protect the innocent. To punish the guilty.
That was why he joined the Marines, it was what he had dedicated his life to. ---- The next time he saw his grandsons? They were teenagers, Ace and Sabo were getting ready to set sail on their own adventure. To conquer the seas. With the Goddess of Nature as their mother? He had expected nothing less. They had come so far in just a few short years and he was so proud of them, he knew that they were going to go far, they were going to cause waves and the world? Was not ready for them. Garp doubted that it ever would be. Still, he was proud of them, they had grown up loved and cared for as while he was bitter about the fact that it hadn't been him? He was still grateful that they were alive. That he didn't have to worry bout keeping them hidden from the Marines, only a fool would go against her and her father. But he also knew that the Celestial Dragons and the World Government? They were greedy fools, they took what did not belong to them. They destroyed lives and didn't care about who or what was destroyed in the path. He didn't become a Marine to subdue people and destroy their homes and lives, he joined to protect them. Garp was no fool and he knew that the World Government and Celestial Dragons were going to piss someone far more powerful than them off. They were already rocking the boat as it was. He had no desire to see what a pissed-off God of Justice looked like, he hoped that it wouldn't be in his or his grandson's lifetimes, but he knew. The Will of D was not something that could be ignored or stopped. He pitied anyone who was foolish enough to hurt them.
