Late winter cold frame gardening
We've had several warm days and will have several more so I decided it was time to partially dismantle the two cold frames I knocked together on my porch so I could fix a problem, do some maintenance, and plant some seeds. It was a pain and my back is screaming at me, but it's done.
The porch is basically an elevated southern-facing concrete slab and I put two cold frames on each end, east and west. Unfortunately when I knocked them together I had not considered not being able to reach the stuff furthest in because I built the structure pretty tall--this is what I wanted to fix.
The west frame did fine until we got our first arctic blast. The spinach and green onions survived, but everything else (kale, Swiss chard, mesclun mix) died. So I elevated the rear containers, cleared out the dead stuff, and trimmed away damaged leaves.
Tumblr media
Then I planted a row of Chinese broccoli and Snow White Bok Choy in the large earthbox. Reseeded the Tidy Cats litter container with mixed kale. I found a packet of 10 year old dwarf pak choy and scattered the entire thing into one of the small earthboxes--if even some of it comes up then I'll consider it a win. I also added some new green onion bottoms to the green onion earthbox as the old ones are starting to poop out.
Tumblr media
And then I reassembled the frame. It went back together smoothly, yay!
Tumblr media
And then I tackled the east frame. Most of the plants in this frame survived, but there were still dead/damaged leaves to remove, some weeds to pull, and I had to elevate the back containers. I also got to harvest a serving of salad spinach, yum!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This frame has spinach, several kinds of lettuce, and a few Swiss chard and kale seedlings. I couldn't reach the one variety of cos-type lettuce to thin it, so I did it now and just replanted any good seedlings wherever there was space. Any that survive I will consider a bonus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This frame did NOT want to go back together snugly, which is what I was afraid of with this project. I am hoping we don't have another bout of sustained frigid temps or the lettuce may perish. Frosts should be okay though.
Tumblr media
End of March/beginning of April these crops will be moved out to the regular garden and the frames will be used to start hardening off the transplants I'll have started indoors. This worked really well last year.

Practical Design Tips for a Low Maintenance Garden
Low maintenance – these are words that come up again and again when clients describe what they are looking for in their gardens. Careful design can certainly help us to achieve our goals of being able to use our gardens more fully without having to take on more work than we can handle. While I would argue that some higher maintenance elements can be extremely beneficial in many ways, I always…

So… maybe kind of a weird question but does anyone know good plants to grow if you want to garden or keep houseplants but don't always have the energy/ability to keep on top of watering schedules and such?
I'm not gonna dump my whole life story and symptom list here but tldr I am a mentally ill individual who struggles often with having the energy to do things. I get depressive episodes that can last weeks or even months which often means that I'll take super good care of a plant and it'll do really well and then I suddenly stop watering it for weeks at a time because I'm using all my energy to do basic self care/necessities. Does anyone know a way to get around that??? Either tips on how to keep plants alive through periods of neglect, or plants that don't require much maintenance????? (If you're going to recommend any native plants, I live in east texas for reference) rn I'm just trying to salvage the plants I have, a very wilted succulent I forgot the name of, a very small zebra plant, and a parlor palm that has survived a shocking amount of things. I probably can't save all of them but I'm doing my best.

If you became super rich and could design your own house, but could only add THREE unnecessary/random/expensive home additions (like how people will have bowling alleys, movie theatres, closets with museums of shoes, car display rooms, spa rooms, wine cellars, etc. in their mansions) - what three would you choose?
#I think I would have: an indoor pool (but like heavily customized with a faux weather system so I could get the feeling of swimming in#rain or fog or snow etc.). a very small arcade consisting only of skee-ball and DDR machines. and an old Library Room with authentic#historical furniture/interior design to store old books/tapestries/study room equipment/whatever other antiques I'd collect. It'd be#like some fully intricate movie set or something that would feel completely like stepping into another world/time.#Though I might would trade out the arcade for a roller skating rink.. i DO love skating....#And I wouldve put rock climbing gym because I love indoor rock climbing but.. as I understand it they have to change out the rock things#on the walls every once in a while so that you can have new routes and it doesnt get boring. and I'd rather have an activty room thats like#self sustaining and doesnt require me to hire some person to come switch things around once every month. Otherwise I would#totally do that instead.#I'm also personally not counting ''craft'' type stuff like having a pottery room kiln sort of thing because#that doesn't count as 'unnessecary' to me. since stuff like that would not at all be just a hobby I 'happen to#do sometimes for fun'#but would definitely be a career sort of thing. Like if I had the money for a fully stocked sculpture room and and a sewing room#with a good machine and etc. then I would literally be professionally selling pottery and designing clothing and etc.#so I wouldn't count it as 'just a random side room I dont need' etc.#The same way that if I played tennis professionally or as a very intense hobby that takes up most of my life/time#then I wouldn't count having a tennis court in your house to practice in as 'unncesscarry' etc.#wow that is the worst I have ever spelt that word ghbjh#Un Cess Carry#ALSO would obviously have an underground bunker of some sort with food and emergency supplies which also does not count as unnecessary to m#since it's literally like... survival.. And I thought most health organizations literally reccomend that even#the common person has a small 'go bag' prepared in their house. and like an evacuation plan in case of fire or other things#It WOULD be an unnecessary rich person thing to have a full on undergRound village or something stocked with 9000 guns and#whaetever. but I think just a basic emergency room with basic supplies could still be counted under the 'not unnecessary' requirement.#Like I would say that a sprawling courtyard of flower gardens and fountains and hedge mazes that takes up like a hundred thousand#dollars a year in maintenance would count as one of the three 'unnecessary and expensive' things. But having a small garden in the#back yard with a few planters in a little greenhouse or whatever would not. The 'excessiveness' of the thing matters lol#ANYWAY!!!#Just curious what other peoples Three Main things would be... hrrmm

Ha. Funny thing about maintaining a native garden:
Some seeds are sticky. For me, it’s mostly twin flower which is a ground cover (grass alternative that is pollinator-friendly) with cute little bluish-purple flowers. Whenever I walk through the garden or tend to it, the seeds stick to me and they fall off as I walk around.
I’m literally leaving a trail of flowers behind me at this point…
