No, they didn't rob you of anything.
Two women were in charge of "Quid Pro Woe": Gandja Monteiro and April Blair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actually, three women were in charge if you count Ortega.
It's anti-Ortega for you kids to glom on to a characterization that is the opposite of what she worked so hard to craft for us, changing lines and admitting to changing lines in the script [for "Woe What a Night"] because she knew what Wednesday would and wouldn't say and do and is "very, very protective of her".
And it repulses me that a trans man would saturate the scene (and the entire book) with fanonist, anti-Ortega crap that never happened on screen to queerbait. LGBTQIA+ people who deliberately queerbait a popular franchise in the entertainment industry aren't doing us any favors. Queerbaiting has always been bad, but it's 2024 and we're supposed to be aware of it/be enlightened about it.
And more, a trans man shoving his hands into something women created and fucking with it so that the main female character is nearly unrecognizable in an officially published take is offensive to me as a feminist.
It is extremely disrespectful to their work, especially when women who write and direct still have to work harder in the industry to be seen, their work often overlooked in favor of what the men put out. You don't ever see anyone talk about Monteiro, this shitshow is always Burton's:

I'd tell you to stop it but I know you won't. It's like watching y'all run right into the pretty, rainbow-ringed Grand Prismatic Spring at Yellowstone. I keep telling you not to fucking jump in, that you'll get burned (and worse), but you're blinded by those cute little swimming goggles that you fully believe will protect you.

Wednesday (S1) | Mysterious, Funny, and Spooky
I've watched #Wednesday twice already, the show is brilliant and the performances are stellar. Bravo @jennaortega bravo #netflixoriginal #netflix #nospoilers
The Addams’ family movies might be one of the first live-action adaptations I was aware of, and although I haven’t revisited these stories in a while, the idea of a TV-Show centered on Wednesday Addams was intriguing. Alfred Gough & Miles Millar as the creators, with Tim Burton setting the tone as one of the directors, and Jenna Ortega as the titular character? Yeah, I’m listening. The teaser…

the Wednesday series is so silly goofy for even IMPLYING that gomez and morticia wouldn't know how to cover up a murder properly, let alone that Wednesday would be unironically scandalised by learning her parents had killed someone. like...do the clowns writing this show actually understand the premise/ethos of The Addams Family? why does this show constantly have them allying with/grovelling at the feet of institutions?? why bother making a show about Wednesday and by extension the Addams family if you're not going to honour their competent oddness and satirical anti-establishment roots? and that's before we even get into the weird ass colourblind racism all throughout this show. I cannot believe there's a scene in this show where morticia addams, a white woman, tells a Black man he has "no idea what it's like not to be believed." I can't believe that the ringleader of the bullies who is bigotedly abusing the "outcasts" is a young Black boy. The antiblackness is insane. like, really? it's so obvious there are next to no poc in significant creative roles on this show which is so fucked considering they not only made Wednesday Latine, but made her ancestory an integral part of the series. I feel like a broken record at this point, but surface level diversity in casting means absolutely nothing so long as the people holding creative control are white. It's just elaborate puppetry, and too many of you fall for it everytime. All this show does is use actors or colour to pay lip-service to the "whitewashing" of history, while the show itself is written and directed almost exclusively by white people. As far as I can tell there is one director of colour, Gandja Monteiro, who directs 2 mid season eps. Every single other person in creative decision making roles is white. It's an absolute JOKE.

Agatha All Along
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Agatha All Along (2024, USA)
Creator: Jac Schaeffer (based on the Marvel comics & Wandavision)
Directors: Jac Schaeffer, Rachel Goldberg & Gandja Monteiro
Mini-review:
Easily the most refreshing and original MCU story since Wandavision. The best Marvel properties are always the ones with the most personality, and Agatha All Along has personality to spare. For starters, it would basically work just as well if it wasn't connected to Marvel (which is a good thing). And thankfully, the show mostly turns its back on CGI, opting for practical sets and effects as often as possible. The entire ensemble is delightful, led by a gleefully snarky Kathryn Hahn. You can tell everyone in the cast had an absolute blast making this, which is not always the case with Marvel projects. My only pet peeve is the cinematography; most scenes set in the Road were almost impossibe to see unless you turned your lights off. All in all, it was the perfect witchy watch for the spookiest week of the year.
P.S. Jac Schaeffer should just take charge of the entire MCU at this point.

The scene where Jen does the unbinding ritual and gets her powers back is so beautiful. I was crying on my couch. Can you talk a little bit about filming that scene? It felt like it was a real catharsis, and you just really went there. Yeah, it was really wild. The director, Gandja Monteiro, created such an incubated space. There was hardly anyone on set, and they really let me dive into that moment. And Kathryn was just so giving — it’s actually starting to make me tear up just thinking about it. She's such a giving scene partner and felt so connected to the character and the rawness of realizing that the reason I don't have my power — and haven't had my power — was because of this woman who's been with me this whole time. It was really moving, day of, to shoot that. We shot it a few times, and it felt like something was really released in that moment. To be able to finally get your power after 100 years, I would imagine, feels like a lot. It feels like a lot. It feels like you're rejoicing, but you’re also so sad because you haven't [had it]. It's like getting a friend back. You're like, “Oh, there you are. There you are. I've been missing you this whole time.” It was cool to do because I have rarely been able to access that part of myself while performing, and I felt so lucky to be able to do that.
