Beginners Guide to Historical Wargaming

Historical wargaming is a hobby that can be intimidating to an outsider, with seemingly complex rules, tons of historical periods, and a whole sub-culture. But the fact is, it’s a very accessible hobby for those willing to make a modest investment of time and money. There are a ton of ways to get into the hobby and all of them are fun ways to learn if the hobby is for you.

Start Cheap – The USAF has a wonderful saying: “Fly before you buy.” The same saying applies when you’re starting out in wargaming. There are a lot of “free to download miniatures rules” - like the quick start for Flames of War, the ESR Napoleonic Rules, Command at Sea - out there, and a list of free downloads for print and play wargames can be found in this link at Board Game Geek. In short, a good Google search can help you find what you want.

At First, Buy What You Want - This pretty much means if a certain set of troops or a certain subset of a period catch your fancy? Do it. Keep in mind the other constraints of that period, but realize that hey, at least you’ll be gaming the period or armies you want to game? But keep in mind the next rule below.

Don’t Try to Do it All – At least, not all at once. Focus on a given period or subset. For example, I game World War II and Cold War Gone Hot mostly, with some forays into the Iran-Iraq and Arab-Israeli wars. I’m also expanding slowly into the Russian Civil War and Russo-Polish War. But in those wars, you have subsets. World War II is too big to do it all. I concentrate on the following theatres:

Eastern Front (Yeah, that’s huge, but the Soviet troops look pretty much the same from 1941 to ’45, just change out the tanks. The Germans take a lot more work).

Blitzkrieg ’40 (France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, as well as Norway).

Normandy to the Rhine ’44-45 with a special emphasis on 1945. But that’s expanding.

Early War Pacific (1941-42)

See now that’s a lot. But it’s taken me years to get to this point, and to confess? A good chunk is still unpainted. Now my boardgames are ready to go, but I have to learn some rules. But in the beginning, don’t buy 20-30 rules sets and a cast of thousands and expect to play it next week. That way will only frustrate you and you’ll lose interest.

Get a Mentor – I’ve had plenty in this hobby, and I thank EVERY single one of them, from Igor, who upped my painting game, to Bruce, who taught me I had a lot to learn again about the hex and counter side of the hobby, to Steve, who showed me everyone wants a little showmanship in their events? Get people who you trust, and people who you can learn from. It helps if they’re a friend. I find advice from a friend is much better listened to.

Keep a Diary -Sounds crazy, but this is something I wish I had done. Keep a diary of your development in the hobby - What you’ve learned and accomplished and what you want to accomplish. It’s a great sanity check and it allows you to have a track of your progress.

Have Fun! – It’s a hobby, not life or death. Learn to be a gracious winner and a good loser. Some people in this hobby, have yet to learn this lesson and well, it is best not to game with them. And don’t ruin other’s fun. Consideration is key in this hobby in my opinion. What is an awesome game to you? Not so much for someone else. So, I’d say have the good graces not to say anything about other gamer’s choice of games if you’re not nuts about them. Or as my great-grandmother used to say “If you haven’t got anything nice to say, have the good graces not to let the other fellow know.”

The main thing I would tell beginners is to pace yourself, have fun, and don’t feel like this hobby is a sprint, it’s not. It’s the one thing I have learned in my 38 years in the hobby above all others. This is a rich hobby, steeped in tradition, and there’s something for everyone. I can honestly tell you, there’s room for everyone to blaze a path here. There’s certainly room enough for you to find yours.

So, go out there and get gaming!

Hey tumblr,

It has been a while since I’ve decided to post my inner thoughts on here and I’m sorry for that.

I’ve been doing really well as a commentator since I’ve decided to take the big leap and expand beyond Melee in 2014.

I know most of my audience knows me from Super Smash Bros. Melee, but I never was a sole Melee fan to begin with. If you really want to know what kind of fan I really am, it would be a Nintendo fan.

Back in my high school days I’d remember spending free periods engaging in console wars on the IGNboards with fellow gamers instead of going outside to play handball. In my first year at Sheepshead Bay High School, I used to spend countless hours playing Gold and Silver with my pals. When I transferred to John Dewey High due to how dangerous the aforementioned school was, I met a bunch of friends who were Advance Wars enthusiasts. These friends along with the ones I met in SHBS helped foster the growth of my adoration for gaming.

These friends also helped ease me back into fighting games when I first thought they weren’t accessible enough for people like me. I was more into Smash Bros. at the time, but they tried to get me into Tekken 3/Tag and Third Strike. Once Soul Calibur 2 came through with Link, somehow someway I was pulled in even if I mained Kilik and not Link. It was awesome to finally read frame data, combo guides, matchup discussions, and more to actually level up as a player. I never knew how much joy one could actually get doing research in fighting games.

I really wish people understood the amount of meticulous care that goes into finding out all the minute details in a fighter. Seeing the viewership that fighting games gets in comparison to the bigger esports titles is always something that I am constantly researching to figure out. One thing that I think it goes back to is the ever prevalent view that they are just hard to get into. I was there before, and I will have to sit and really figure out ways to make them easier for people to digest.

One thing that has worked with getting more people into our scene of course are the dedicated commentators that weave together storylines for the rest of the world to follow. It is a job that is not easy, but it does come with heavy responsibility. I am happy that nowadays we have more live broadcasts, archives of videos, write-ups, and podcasts in an effort to get more people into the scenes...but there is still more work to be done.

The scary thing is that back then, some of these scenes looked like they had no future. Nowadays we have over-saturation. With every win for the betterment of the entire scene, there is always another monster that we have to overcome. In an age where corporations are propping up events with big budgets, the smaller grassroots event organizers are starting to hurt more. I am seeing trends of dedicated tournament organizers who’ve ran events for many years being forgotten because their events don’t have the same prize pool as a new untested event that has corporate backing. The cool thing is when these big companies outsource people from the community, because then they are allowing these guys to make an honest earning from their work, which they can then give back to the scene.

Speaking of giving back to the scene, one of the things I realized was that in the past I’ve done a lot of grinding to level up my social media presence to be one of the lighthouses that can get more people into the Smash scene. I won’t say I’ve 100% accomplished that goal, but I will say that many people come to me at events till this day thanking me and my co-casters for getting them into the scene. What makes it even better is when they say that they’re now doing something for the scene thanks to our patronage. This is one of the biggest wins.

Lately I’ve been taking more risks, a risk that many content creators try to avoid. If you have an established audience somewhere, it is usually best to not deviate from what you are known to specialize in for fear of looking like a “sell-out” or “disingenuous.” I’ve had people that were close friends of me who actually mocked me for being a “blind Nintendo zealot”, the same friends who constantly got put down from other scenes for being a Smash enthusiast. Why must be make fun of each other when others hurt us in the past for loving what we love?

As a person that’s a big Nintendo fan since my first NES system, and soon after SNES in my youth - I’ve always been a person that fought hard and pushed for Nintendo. Being a Nintendo fan can be rough, I still remember when we lost many 3rd party developers during the Nintendo 64, GameCube, and so on. Regardless of this fact I always took my sword and shield to wage war on the IGNboards. Fast forward to 2014 where I finally started getting opportunities to work with my favorite video game company, I realized this was a chance to do more than just Smash. Smash 4 wyearsas the first game I’ve commentated outside of Melee officially. It was tough casting an Invitational with items and a ruleset that is nothing near what I am used to. I still decided to fight through this, because I know at the end of the day if we get on their good graces, we can see beautiful things for our scene in the future.

I know there are many that may see otherwise due to the sacrifices made. Fan-made alterations were all the rage, but those have died in popularity due to fear of the legal ramifications. I will touch on this more in the future, but I will say that it is awesome to see their respective scene do their best to keep the hope alive. At the same time, many of the members of that team have moved on to an awesome project that has a ton of promise, Icons: Combat Arena is going to be the future...stay tuned.

Tangents...I must learn how to not have diarrhea of the brain.

So for the people that have always questioned why do I commentate ARMS, Smash 4, Pokken Tournament, and etc. besides solely Melee...I’m just a fan of video games in general. I gravitate heavily to fighters, but I do love random Nitnendo games. I tend to stream variety games on my twitch (@ xD1x if you didn’t know.) The interesting thing is, if I weren’t streaming I’d still be playing variety games. While I frequented many Melee events in the past, whenever I went back home, I’d be out there playing the next AAA title, or under-appreciated sleeper release at my leisure. Live broadcasts and current commentary/hosting gigs have finally allowed me to come out and tell the public that I am just a gamer, who loves not one game, but many.

My hope is that all of you amazing people that came across me outside of Smash, decide to follow me on my constant journey to see Smash succeed. My end goal is to help the scene succeed, and if this means taking the hard road to start creating content outside of Smash in an effort, to later on show people the wonderful world of Smash Bros. then hopefully we’ll have a bigger scene at the end of the day.

Regardless of the outcome, this will be a fun journey.

Lastly, when I get hired to do commentary at events...tournament organizers choose what they want the casters to commentate.

Google Play cracks down on marijuana apps, loot boxes and more

On Wednesday, Google href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/29/following-ftc-complaint-google-rolls-out-new-policies-around-kids-apps-on-google-play/"> rolled out new policies around kids’ apps on Google Play following an FTC complaint claiming a lack of attention to app’s compliance with children’s privacy laws, and other rules around content. However, kids’ apps weren’t the only area being addressed this week. As it turns out, Google also cracked down on loot boxes, marijuana apps, while also expanding sections detailing prohibitions around hate speech, sexual content, and counterfeit goods, among other things.

The two more notable changes include a crackdown on “loot boxes” and a ban on apps that offer marijuana delivery — while the service providers’ apps can remain, the actual ordering process has to take place outside of the app itself, Google said.

Specifically, Google will no longer allow apps offering the ability to order marijuana through an in-app shopping cart, those that assist users in the delivery or pickup of marijuana, or those that facilitate the sale of THC products.

This isn’t a huge surprise — Apple already bans apps that allow for the sale of marijuana, tobacco, or other controlled substances in a similar fashion. On iOS, apps like Eaze and Weedmaps are allowed, but they don’t offer an ordering function. That’s the same policy Google is now applying on Google Play, too.

This is a complex subject for Google, Apple, and other app marketplace providers to tackle. Though some states have legalized the sale of marijuana, the laws vary. And it’s still illegal according to the federal government. Opting out of playing middleman here is probably the right step for app marketplace platforms.

That said, we understand Google has no intention of outright banning marijuana ordering and delivery apps.

The company knows they’re popular and wants them to stay. It’s even giving them a grace period of a 30 days to make changes, and is working with the affected app developers to ensure they’ll remain accessible.

“These apps simply need to move the shopping cart flow outside of the app itself to be compliant with this new policy,” a spokesperson explained. “We’ve been in contact with many of the developers and are working with them to answer any technical questions and help them implement the changes without customer disruption.”

Another big change impacts loot boxes — a form of gambling popular among gamers. Essentially, people pay a fee to receive a random selection of in-game items, some of which may be rare or valuable. Loot boxes have been heavily criticized for a variety of reasons, including their negative effect on gameplay and how they’re often marketed to children.

Last week, a new Senate bill was introduced with bipartisan support that would prohibit the sale of loot boxes to children, and fine those in violation.

Google Play hasn’t gone so far as to ban loot boxes entirely, but instead says games have to now disclose the odds of getting each item.

In addition to these changes, Google rolled out a handful of more minor updates, detailed on its Developer Policy Center website.

Here, Google says it has expanded the definition of what it considers sexual content to include a variety of new examples, like illustrations of sexual poses, content depicts sexual aids and fetishes, and depictions of nudity that wouldn’t be appropriate in a public context. It also added “content that is lewd or profane,” according to Android Police which compared the old and new versions of the policy.

Definitions that are somewhat “open to interpretation” is something that Apple commonly uses to gain better editorial control over its own App Store. By adding a ban of “lewd or profane” content, Google can opt to reject apps that aren’t covered by other examples.

Google also expanded its list of examples around hate speech to include: “compilations of assertions intended to prove that a protected group is inhuman, inferior or worthy of being hated;” “apps that contain theories about a protected group possessing negative characteristics (e.g. malicious, corrupt, evil, etc.), or explicitly or implicitly claims the group is a threat;” and “content or speech trying to encourage others to believe that people should be hated or discriminated against because they are a member of a protected group.”

Additional changes include an update to the Intellectual Property policy that more clearly prohibits the sale or promotion for sale of counterfeit goods within an app; a clarification of the User Generated Content policy to explicitly prohibit monetization features that encourage objectionable behavior by users; and an update the Gambling policy with more examples.

A Google spokesperson says the company regularly updates its Play Store developer policies in accordance with best practices and legal regulations around the world. However, the most recent set of changes to err on the side of getting ahead of increased regulation — not only in terms of kids’ apps and data privacy, but also other areas now under legal scrutiny, like loot boxes and marijuana sales.

DEGRASSI SEASON THREE IS ACTUALLY ONE OF THE BEST SEASONS OF A SHOW I HAVE EVER WATCHED ! So intense yet lighthearted and just so real - its beginning to give Skins, Skam, etc. a run for their money again. Everything in just ten episodes proves what wonders being picked up by Netflix has done for the show. Pointers ....

☆ THE PLATONIC FRIENDSHIPS

- Lola and the Gamer Club was so unexpected but so great

- Lola and Yael’s friendship was so amazing and one of the best female friendships to be portrayed on Degrassi IMO. Similar to that between Gamer Club and Lola, they’re such an unlikely pairing but Yael’s support towards Lola and her abortion during episode eight killed me, it was so beautiful

- Grace and Jonah are also one of my favourite friendships on the show bar the fact that I am receiving vibes that replicate season two Grace and Zig. Pleassssse just let there a be a bloody platonic friendship between a guy and a girl, Degrassi, plssss I beg

☆ PLOTS

- I just really love how every character was depicted as so flawed and problematic yet loving and full of worth this season, it was so wonderful to see and it kind of gives hope watching. I’ve more confidence in myself and others after watching ?

- The writing was A***** this season. I cannot find a way to criticise it really. Also, A**** writing. Eric, Olivia and Ana all need some kind of recognition after their time on the show following their exits next season - such incredible actors//actresses

- The refugee plot was so so amazing and I really hope that the information we learn about Rasha and Saad’s backgrounds gives some insight to or a change of heart in anyone watching who has a negative outlook on the refugee crisis. Also, I love how Rasha is a refugee from Syria, muslim and gay, it was just incredible

- I almost cried watching Zoe come out after watching her so clearly struggle in the past few seasons and it broke me when she moved in with Grace after being kicked out by her homophobic a*s of a mom. Zoe’s come such a long way - like, can we just see her happy now, or ? Also, can I just say that Zasha are one of my otps ? Coool (other two are Hael and Fronah.)

- Goldi’s plot !!!!!!! Her character development is ace and I just love how imperfect she can be but how she learns so much. Also, as somebody who cannot stand religion, I couldn’t help but admire and respect how dedicated she CHOOSES to be to her faith. Also, when she supported Rasha coming out YASSSSS

- MAYAAAA MY BBY MAYA ! Her plot struck too many chords and it all made so much sense. In reality, Maya has been a ticking time-bomb for such a long time; she had to boil over at some point. Every tiny aspect of every one of her seasons was so important and poignant. It was kind of nice for her to have a happy ending for once. Also, they better not revert back to her old look next season - HECK NO, KEEP THAT CURLING TONG AWAY !

- We finally got an insight into Esme’s background ! Esme is one of those characters who’s problematic behaviour is sometimes too regular for me to understand or accept but after those final scenes in episode ten, wow ! Esme is going to NEED to have a more prominent role in season four - Chelsea really stole that episode as such a capable actress.

- Lola’s abortion storyline was flawless, it couldn’t have been done any better. It really was the best depiction of abortion in both literature and TV/film that I have come across or heard of. Everything from discovering that she had been taking the pill the wrong way to Yael telling her that she was coming to the appointment. The procedure scene was so so vital and important plus the interaction with the doctor was brilliantly written. I also thought that it was so important that Lola was the pregnant girl in that storyline after being fobbed off as the ‘bimbo’ for song long. Manny Santos-development vibes, yass !

- Episode five was probably my favourite episode this season. It ticked every box with both comedy and addressing the pressures and expectations of sexual behaviour and thoughts on both men and women. I had me both in stitches and in awe like IS THIS EVEN REAL

- I enjoyed Lola and Miles’s platonic relationship so I was a little disappointed when they ‘hooked up’, especially since both are so often depicted as promiscuous and without a conscience. Oh, well. But besides that, I did love how supportive they were towards one another.

- Grace is making me so upset, ohmygosh, episode seven. No words. I was so glad that she changed her mind.

- Well, we can finally understand why Baaz acts like such a d*ck - he is insecure ! That scene where he is basically admitting to being jealous of Hunter was beautifully done and even more so when Hunter let him win the eh, ‘measuring’ contest.

- THE PERIOD STORYLINE OHMYGOSH NO WORDS I JUST LOVE THIS DAMN SHOW

- I haven’t really thought much about the Tristan in a coma storyline yet. I’m not sure how I feel about it uh

☆ RANDOM NOTES

- Did everyone glow up this season or what ?!?!?!?!?!! Especially Hunter and Maya - DAMN ! In the early seasons of Next Generation, the then-cast apparently used to wear their own clothes in scenes rather than outfits from a wardrobe especially curated for their characters. It seems as if the current cast and crew are heading back this way (only have to look at Reiya and Hunter’s hair, plus Lola and Maya’s hair and outfits.) which I looove - realistic looks and all that.

- MAYA IS TALKING ABOUT CAM OHMYGOSH KATIE IS BACK OHMYGOSH INTERACTION BETWEEN MAYA AND MILES OHMYGOSH THIS IS TBT ON ACID

- Saad’s camera ? Where can I get it ? Pls ? Someone ?

- “You know what they say .... Big feet ...” This show, I can’t handle it ohmygosh, bless the Gamer Club YES

- Yael and Hunter are the cutest, I love them both as friends and a romantic pairing and I really love how the show are portraying their difficulties in finding a balance ! Also, we really saw a softer side to both of them and they’re just ahhhhh

- TWIN TIME ! TWIN TIME ! TWIN TIME ! We need more twin time and Hollingsworth sibling scenes in general

- Am I the only one who was delighted that there was no sign of the Hollingsworth parents this season ?

- FRONAH ARE TOO GOOD, THAT IS MY ONLY METHOD OF UNDERSTANDING WHY OR HOW THE DEGRASSI WRITERS COULD TRY SPLIT THEM

- Hunter’s hair and Jonah’s hair and guyliner ayyyyyy

- YAEL IS SUCH AN AMAZING CHARACTER ! I love how they included the ‘girl on girl hate’ ‘I’m not like other girls’ kind of thing and how she realised how in the wrong she was. Also, she has no chill ! The measuring scenes, omfg

- JONAH APPRECIATION ! How could anybody hate this smol bean ?

- Is Winston still only here for comedy, or ? Come on, lads !
