I need to put this somewhere so that I don't forget it and you legally signed up for this by following me. This is my current "thinking about these at work but Im using up all my tiny little sticky notes to write them down" vld fic list:
1. Westworld AU but set in canon universe. I simply dont have enough robots in my current robot Lance fic, now EVERYONE'S a robot w a special twist and (if you havent seen the show) Voltron is a "historical reenactment park" (read: violent play place for rich assholes). With special guest, the Lions!
2. Spinoff "what if Pidge and Hunk found out Lance was a robot" where I use my complete alternate storyline so that its not just reading the same fic. Aka Lance's backstory has the same cast of characters in name but a COMPLTELY different style relationship >:) Partially spy v spy where Keith and Shiro keep secrets about Keith's Galraness and the Garrison Trio keep secrets about Lance being a robot. More emphasis on friendship (I know, you didn't think that was possible, right?) But still Klance as all my works are (but definitely background).
3. Being Human(US/Canada version)/Urban Fantasy AU where Lance is a ghost and Blue is the house he died in (and he can communicate with her), Hunk is a werewolf but DEFINITELY not the fun kind (and his and Lance's relationship is central to the story), Keith and Shiro are vampires (Shiro's a lot older, Keith's from the 80s lmao) who are tangled up in a corrupt vampire society, Pidge is a nymph (dryad?) Who doesnt like non-supernatural humans and basically has just their one little tree left from a forest thats been cut down (and if that dies, they die with it). Then there are other characters who are spoilers...
4. Eldritch Lions AU - long time people, YEAH BET YOU DIDN'T THINK YOUD SEE THIS ONE AGAIN. Really though, heavily rewritten so dont worry about it sucking (at least in the same way). Basically just the paladins being literally vessels for the Lions and having incomplete souls without them. Super cool powers (in theory) that are appropriately sized for how intergalactic Voltron is (aka planet shaping). Are the paladins still themselves after getting the powers though...? Who knows! Back to you in the studio, Fool!
So yeah!! Thats kind of it? Not really but these four are the most concrete for things I really want to write if I ever get more time!! I really hope I get more time coming soon...

I’ve read all of your klance fics (😭) have you got any recommendations?
honestly read anything by @hiuythn (here on ao3), @noussommeslessquelettes (here on ao3), @melancholymango (here on ao3), @wittyy-name (here on ao3), @apvrrish (aknightley on ao3), @katranga (here on ao3), @thisgirlhastales (mytay on ao3), @speakswords (speaks on ao3), @starlightments (starlightment on ao3),
ANYWAY here are some of my fav fics by these guys! i honestly love everything of theirs so what i recommend is just to get you hooked if you’re not already. after that, you should do yourself a favor and just go and read all their fics lmao. have fun!!
- hiuythn wrote there, nestled against his pulse and its incredible sequel, which you’ve probably already read (here and here), but if you haven’t, you’re really missing out. if you’re looking for something shorter, i highly recommend this adorable fluff: i killed sendak for this. anyway hiuythn’s writing is something i’m obsessed with just. the way they word things, and their characterization, and even the way they format their stories it’s just,,, every time they post a fic i’m like HELLO GREAT DAY
- noussommeslessquelettes wrote one of my favorite series ever. what first got me hooked on them was this series and the absolute Feels™ it gave me and just their unique writing style. it’s 55k all together and it’s a high school au and idk it just makes me feel so at home for some reason. god i fucking love this one aspect of the series where keith has to change a tire,,, YOU’LL SEE!!! they have a bunch of other fics too!! oneshots and chaptered fics! make sure you check ‘em all out they’re all incredible
- melancholymango has a BUNCH of fics. they’ve been posting a lot lately bc of commissions and their smut is *chefs kiss* i’m always a slut for any creature/monster au they write, so some of my favs to just dive into: from a dragon’s breath, where lance tries to sacrifice himself to the dragons near his village, my, what sharp teeth you have, which is a werewolf!keith/little red riding hood!lance fic, would you be so kind? asdkjf canon fwb!!, beast of burden okay. this fic. FUCK. it’s another werewolf!keith fic and,,, read the tags but Hello at that fic omg. anyway kali has fics ranging from like 8k - 100k+ so just go have fun
- wittyy wrote a lot of fics that are super popular in the fandom that i’m sure you’ll recognize!! shut up and dance with me and moth and flame and the mirror fics shadow of the future (by wittyy) / ghost of the past (by zizanni). but!!! they also have awesome fics that you might not have read yet, including from what i’ve tasted of desire (alpha/alpha shifter dragon fic) and a touch of magic which is vampire!lance witch!keith and i’m actually in love with it
- aknightley also has a bunch of big fics in the fandom. they wrote this one fic that i’ve read so many times ajsdlkf it’s fit the crown to my head. that story’s like a legit Novel i’m obsessed with it. also can you tell me is so good my guy, like,,, if you haven’t read it yet you better get to it. you’ve probably read a bunch of their fics already, idk if they have even a single fic with less than 1000 kudos, but make sure you scroll through their page and check out all their fics if you haven’t already
- katranga has it might not be that bad which i’m obsessed with ohh my god. basically keith mistakes jealousy for ~other feelings~. also audience of one and its awesome sequel. it’s where lance is captured by the galra and keith is there, having been raised with them (and the sequel where it’s keith joining voltron). SO GOOD
- mytay has this series that i’m fucking obsessed with. it’s where keith and lance end up stranded on this planet and become kickass cowboy boyfriends. it’s so fun to read and the way the story is told is nonlinear and i LOVE that. they also have a ton of other fics that you’ll want to read i don’t make the rules
- speaks also has a bunch of popular awesome fics!! if you want to start with something short, read the amnesia game. this fic just really stuck in my memory, like the premise of it is so interesting and like nothing i’ve ever seen before, i’m obsessed with it. also terminal velocity is this insane, incredible angst that inspired me to write something angsty at one point, i can’t remember which fic it was though asdkfj. basically check out all their fics lmao
- starlightment wrote read all about it where keith’s a star highschool athlete and lance is a reporter for the newspaper!!! it’s so fun aldsfjk. also something blue which eheueheu fake relationship. that’s all i need to say. and they have a bunch of other fics too which you should read obvs
TL;DW these are some awesome writers and you should honestly just click on all their profiles and read through every one of their fics. i promise you’ll be entertained and also obsessed

The Boy Who Was Surrounded By Hidden Wolves
by Angelwithdaddyissues
This is a story where Lance lives in Altea, a large town hidden amongst acres upon acres of forest in England. He moved there with nothing more than his inheritance money from his grandparents and with the bag on his back. Everything seemed to be going great - until he noticed how strange the town acted when he thought he wasn't looking. The fearful glances travellers sent his way when he was amongst friends. The odd howling that emitted deep from within the forest every full moon. The flashes of wolves he would see out of his window late at night when he could have sworn wolves were no more in England. But what confused him the most were his friends and the way that they became so protective of him in less than a month of knowing him.
In a tale of misunderstandings, breaking of trust, soulmates scared of their fates and of a danger lingering in the dark - old and forgotten - Lance is left wondering who he can trust when he has been lied to by the ones that are closest to him. Overcoming betrayal and heartbreak is just the beginning for the boy surrounded by hidden wolves.

Voltron Werewolf AU
The Beast Inside Us Werewolf AU:
This universe follows the same basic plotline as the VLD universe with a significant major change: Werebeasts exist on Earth and the human crew of Voltron are werewolves.
While werebeasts exists, they aren’t very public to normal humans. Each species of werebeast has its own culture and role within their overall sub-society. The Galaxy Garrison mainly recruits predators, although they also have humans in their ranks. Those selected to be on flight crews are almost always werewolves. High ranking officers tend to be werecats. Scientists are more varied, as are other positions.
Pidge
Pidge is a werefox like the rest of her family. When she snuck into the Garrison she passed herself as an Ethiopian Wolf, which are very fox-like. She used illegal hormones, etc. to make it more convincing. It’s unheard of for werefoxes to be pilots as they are viewed to be more fragile than other predator werebeasts.
Shiro
Shiro is a werewolf, specifically a Tundra Wolf. They’re huge, tend to be black/silver/white, and look like giant huskies ngl. His fur was originally black, although it turned somewhat white after he was captured by the Galra. Despite his wolf form being his strongest form, he never used it while in the arena. After coming back to life, all of his fur turned as white as snow.
Keith
Keith is a Dire Wolf. It’s a currently extinct form of wolf and werewolf, although his father was a wolf and when his genes mixed with Krolia’s unique Galra ones, it produced a mutation that most closely resembles the dire werewolves of old. Perhaps their origin is lest terrestrial than once thought...
Hunk
Hunk, like his mother, is a Makenzie Valley Wolf (aka Timber Wolf). As one of the largest kinds of werewolves, his werebeast form is very intimidating. Unfortunately for Hunk, he doesn’t like using it often and even while in wolf form isn’t very aggressive--unless it means protecting his friends.
Lance
Most of Lance’s family are coyotes, but Lance himself (like his sister Veronica) is an Eastern Wolf (or Great Lakes Wolf). They are a medium sized wolf similar to coyotes, which is part of why he never really felt out of place in his family. That and the fact that they would’ve loved him whether he was a werewolf, werecoyote, or not a werebeast at all (like one of his nephews). He got picked on some as a kid but never let it keep him down.
No one besides Shiro knows that Pidge is not a werewolf. They don’t really care, but it’s not something they’ve really discussed since coming to space. Since their werebeast forms are in part related to Earth’s moon, being in space makes them unreliable. Additionally, Coran and Allura don’t know about it, although they have on occasion seen a paladin in wolf form. They just assumed all humans did that and didn’t see a need to ask.
Haggar does know about Shiro’s wolf form (or suspects something of it) but was unable to get him to transform. Lotor is unaware of the ability and sees humans as physically inferior to both Alteans and Galra.
As far as relationships go, there is both implied Shidge and implied Lotidge in the comic and the first story. It’s left open for development later.

Got any head canons about Galra in general?
My personal favorite galra headcanon is, that much like baby cheetah, young galra are all covered in baby fluff. Yeah, even the ones who grow up to be more reptilian-looking.
Other than that, I like the idea of galra having non-human vocalizations, kinda used as grumbles/sounds/interjections but they sound a lot more like tigers than housecats. They have the physiology to roar, but, it’s pretty uncommon to actually hear it because this is a spacefaring race and people mostly use their words.
Basically I really love thinking about galra with nonhuman reactions or instincts but always, always with the caveat of “remember we’re dealing with sentient people who have run and operated a space empire for thousands of years, by most metrics they’re more civilized than we are”
And I also am formally of the opinion that Zarkon is the master of all unreliable narrators for his own species- because so much of what he spews as the inherent nature of the galra is something we see him wasting a huge amount of energy forcing onto them (which he wouldn’t need to do if it was just their nature) and also, much more on a cultural level than on a biological one.
So what do I think is the “galra characteristics” that would be influenced by instinct?
I think galra have a pack instinct. They’re lithe, agile, look a little more on the carnivorous end of the spectrum than omnivores- so I’d guess their early ancestors were probably comparable to hyenas or wolves. Pack hunters.
Here’s the thing about a wolf pack- while at a glance Zarkon might seem to be evoking and suggesting the stereotypical “alpha wolf is the biggest bully who rises to power and the pecking order is determined by Might”- that’s actually complete garbage, and real wolf packs are family units. The “alpha wolf” in a pack is usually in that leadership position because they’re mom.
So as big a fan as I am of thinking of galra as a species and the psychological trends/instincts that might be encouraged in them from their early ancestors? I honestly think that those main tendencies are loyalty and socialization- a desire to be part of a social unit and feel close in that sense.
“Galra instinct” in my book is infinitely less b-movie werewolf and infinitely more the line of traits that led to the domestication of the dog- that is to say, I think that even more than humans, galra are wired socially and sympathetically.
After all, again, if Zarkon had any leg to stand on in his claim that the galra are inherently a race of subjugating bullies, why do we see him flexing so much social pressure to try and make that so, and why have so many galra inevitably, despite his incredibly influential position, turned away from him?
Why is Keith pretty much gentle-tempered as long as he’s not provoked or stressed? Because Keith is really no more bellicose than any other member of the team- he’s easier to provoke, but a lot of Keith’s aggression actually seems to boil down to a long history of isolation and abandonment?
And conversely? Despite Zarkon poo-poohing all that icky sentimental garbage as beneath him and any Real Galra (tm)...
Tumblr media
Remember this guy? The first galra we ever saw? Not a rebel, not a spy, not a major antagonist or even a named character, just, some guy who happened to be surveying one of Pluto’s satellites at the right time.
Remember how in a single action he went against the vast majority of Zarkon’s “proper galra” virtues and defied orders from all of his superiors to pull his soldiers out of danger because half of them would have died?
The galra aren’t instinctive bullies.
They’re instinctively social. And obviously, this isn’t a rule- instinct isn’t that strong- but it stands by the fact of Zarkon’s trying to make space orcs out of people who fundamentally aren’t.

Weekly Voltron Fic Recs #46
Yeah, it’s been more than a week. Hush now and enjoy the super ridiculously long list of recs. I made this for you.
Rules: You can find past weekly rec lists here, and non-list recs in my general fic rec tag. Also follow @maychorianrecs for individually tagged posts, the easier to search and reblog. This is stuff I like, and I have a huge bias toward Lance, hurt/comfort, and general fluff, in that order. Gen unless otherwise noted. Please comment on the fics if you read and enjoy them!
A Long Time Ago (We Used To Be Friends) by Mikiri Words: 32,580 Author’s Summary: Originally Keith was supposed to have been Shiro’s copilot for the Kerberos Mission. They bonded over the thought of being on a mission together. But that all fell down the drain when something was found wrong with his blood. The fall out of the mission failure changed Keith forever. My Comments: Really interesting idea for an AU, and the story did such a good job of building up the team of Matt, Sam, Keith, and Shiro that it hurt like the dickens to have that all torn away in the end.
Lay To Waste by Demenior, wrecked_anon Words: 41,303 Author’s Summary: What was meant to be a simple mission— make contact with the Rebellion and form an alliance— goes horribly awry. Now the team is split up, the Galra are invading, and Shiro’s past may prove to be their greatest adversary yet. OR When you have skeletons in your closet, you hope they stay dead. My Comments: I’ve read and recced stories in this series before, so I knew before I read it that it was going to be amazing, but also have moments of pretty awful horror that I would have to steel myself for. And that’s completely true. The worldbuilding is fantastic, and this author always does such a great job of making Voltron feel like SCIFI, rather than a space fantasy, which is cool. The aliens are so ALIEN, and the new cultures and characters you meet are all so fascinating and so well-conceptualized. It’s just great, great stuff, but yeah, brace yourself from some horrific scenes.
of beasts and men by nowweareunstoppable Words: 14,430 (½) Author’s Summary: (werewolves & ghouls & witches, oh my!) It hurt, but it hurt like a lightning strike must; so powerful that the pain of it is overshadowed by the sheer momentum of the act. She was an explosion, but instead of coming apart, she was converging again into something more than the previous sum of her parts. Pidge came back with the taste of copper on her tongue and panic pulsing inside of her. My Comments: Absolutely fabulous urban fantasy AU with Pidge stumbling in far over her head and werewolf Shiro sacrificing just about everything to save her. Action-packed, edge-of-the-seat thrill ride. I want the rest really bad.
Hazy by haleyislametbh Words: 2,102 Author’s Summary: Some days, Lance’s ADHD doesn’t seem to bother him much. Today is not one of those days. My Comments: This feels really in-character, though it’s not my particular headcanon. Great stuff.
Try Everything by oldmythologies Words: 1,510 Author’s Summary: In which Lance believes that anything is a lullaby if you sing it soft enough <3 My Comments: Shance hinted at the end but reads platonic to me. Really sweet modern AU in which Lance doesn’t know his roommate Shiro very well, but still tries to gently sing him awake when he has a nightmare.
See The Light by itbepansam Words: 1,591 Author’s Summary: The team escapes from a dangerous mission and after one of the team members gets hurt, they decide to all form a huge cuddle pile My Comments: Cuddle piles are always good.
Build on Shaky Ground by Engineer104 Words: 3,337 Author’s Summary: Sometimes Lance dangles the carrot of friendship in front of Pidge’s face; sometimes Pidge refuses to take a bite For Pidge Ship Week, Day 1: Trust Comments: Tagged as possible romantic Plance but can be read platonic. I like fics that treat platonic relationships with all the depth and complexities of romantic relationships. A lot. Nothing is really resolved at the end of this one, but you can see the threads of friendship starting to be woven between them, and that’s beautiful.
Dirt and Dried Blood by hufflepirate Words: 14,637 Author’s Summary: Coran doesn’t know exactly what happened out there. He just knows the other paladins brought the princess back bloody and half-dead. Allura remembers being left behind, but she doesn’t remember making it home. Sometimes getting back on your feet requires a little more than a healing pod, but they both know he’s going to be there for her every step of the way. My Comments: Absolutely fabulous fic centered on characters who don’t get nearly enough attention. Great hurt/comfort scenes, great emotions, great characterization and backstory. A pleasure to read from start to finish.
Triumph or Death by ashitanoyuki for Wisttic Words: 3,562 Author’s Summary: Haxus did not die when he fell from the generator room catwalk. His survival presents an opportunity to gather useful information for the Galra Empire. My Comments: Great outsider perspective on the crew, and it even had me rooting for Haxus, at least his survival. Fun read.
Prison Toys by PastelClark Words: 3,452 Author’s Summary: When the mission crew of Shirogane, Holt, Holt, and McClain doesn’t come back from Kerberos, the world decides their ship crashed. Pidge decides it’s all bullshit.She’s not the only one. (In which Pidge lives inside her own head, Lance’s older sister was the fourth Kerberos crew member, everyone has something to lose, and no one is handling this well.) My Comments: Heartbreaking, but fascinating look at how Lance and Pidge’s dynamic changes when he’s dealing with loss, too. They both want to get to space so, so badly, yet they seem to work at cross purposes much of the time.
Starting to Unwind by HapaxLegomenon Words: 1,331 Author’s Summary: “We decided,” Lance says, “that you need a day off.” Shiro immediately stiffens. “We don’t have time –” “Yes we do,” Pidge says firmly. “We already cleared it with the Princess and Coran – who said it was a great idea, by the way – so no training, no leader-ing, no worrying, just relax and let us take care of you for once, okay?” Or; Shiro works too hard, and the other paladins encourage him to take a break. My Comments: Aw, everyone taking care of Shiro is so sweet.
Existing by prettyshiroic (AnalystProductions) Words: 6,929 Author’s Summary: It’s not just pain that sweeps into his life uninvited and without ceremony. At first it is. But something else came with it too. Well. Many things. But they’re a mild annoyance. Keith doesn’t like to complain and grumble, so their presence is written off as ghostly. Haunting him from time to time, and that’s as far as he lets the interaction go. Then there’s this. This thing. It made conversations difficult and hard to follow, made words uncomfortable in his mouth. It stripped him of basic comprehension skills at the best of times, sentences on a page clearly there but entirely lost to him. At the worst of times, it strips him of much more than that. Existence at the expense of everything else. My Comments: It doesn’t seem fair, with all of Keith’s canon difficulties, for him to also have to deal with chronic pain. But well, life isn’t fair, is it? That’s part of the point of this fic. The other part is Keith learning to accept support, and the others all being happy to provide it. Achy fic (literally and figuratively) with a great conclusion.
Nesting by isabeau25 Words: 5,635 Author’s Summary: Keith takes a chance on building a permanent nest. The rest of the team approves. My Comments: Part of a very well-realized and adorable wingfic AU. Keith’s nervousness about making something permanent after wandering for his whole life is so palpable and understandable, and everyone’s support is just lovely. A comforting fic, it makes me feel cozy and warm.
Cat in the Sun by isabeau25 Words: 3,048 Author’s Summary: Shiro was just out for a jog. He hadn’t planned on buying a restaurant. My Comments: I didn’t know I needed a platonic coffee shop AU! This was relaxing to read, and the descriptions are idyllic and charming. If I were Shiro, I’d want to buy this run-down property, too. This is the first of a series, and I’m definitely looking forward to more.
Young Blood by Emerald_Ashes Words: 2,268 (1/?) Author’s Summary: Shiro is still missing. A mission in hopes to rescue him go terribly wrong and the team is led into a trap. While they manage to escape, not everyone makes it out unscathed. My Comments: Deaged Keith in Galra form! Lance is a wonderful caretaker already. I’m really looking forward to reading this one as it develops.
Words Fail by EagleInFlight Words: 23,057 (6/?) Author’s Summary: A mind-melding exercise goes wrong, and the five Paladins are now trapped in Lance’s mind. To escape, they must delve through Lance’s memories. Lance learns that in order to save his friends, he has to stop running. But to stop running means to face the worst of himself. My Comments: I really loved the way this fic dealt with Lance’s memories and how the other paladins reacted to them. They all go on a separate little journey with Lance, and it feels very in-character, very emotional and heartwrenching. I’m glad Shiro was there at the time he was, in particular. I’m looking forward to the conclusion a lot.
Reload by Uniasus Words: 9,837 Author’s Summary: Shiro always knew he drew attention as a Galra prisoner, from the soldiers, the other slaves, Zarkon and Haggar. But he never knew the result of it. Now that Black’s refusing to fly with him, Shiro’s determined to figure out what exactly the Galra did. My Comments: Really interesting and well-written Post-Season Three fic that DOESN’T go with the clone hypothesis. I enjoyed all the twists and turns in this one very much. Really great concepts and characterization all around.
Let’s Find The Good We Knew Before by kyanve for Mikiri Words: 6,290 Author’s Summary: By dumb coincidence, Katie ends up witness to Keith’s exit from the Garrison before she’s prepared her identity as Pidge, and decides to get involved. My Comments: Great slight canon divergence fic with Keith and Pidge forming the salty younger sibling team they were always meant to be, just a little quicker than canon. A lot of pain, a lot of heartache there, but they are definitely good for each other.
There’s not such a thing as too many Shiros by RukiaG Words: 1,081 Author’s Summary: Shiro has a clone. That’s something everyone knows and has accepted by now. However, it turns out the Galra made several clones of him, so what will Team Voltron do with all those clones? Adopt them, of course. My Comments: Some adorable crack in which everyone makes plans to adopt a Shiro clone and give them silly names.
Normal by Zurela Words: 6,506 Author’s Summary: Lance and Keith survived isolation on a mysterious planet, but that doesn’t mean everything is automatically okay. Unable to hear and confronted with traumatic memories, Lance and the team do their best to get things back to normal. My Comments: Great follow-up to a previously recced fic. This is some very well done aftermath and recovery. Lance has received a permanent injury, and that’s treated with proper weight, but there’s a lot of hope in there too. And the team is wonderfully supportive. Klance, but everyone gets a lovely moment. I especially loved Allura and Coran. They said some very important stuff. It made me think as well as filling my heart with fuzzy warmth.
Numbers by oldmythologies Words: 1,222 Author’s Summary: Shiro would hate it. He would hate knowing that Keith heard him scream sometimes, that Keith knew that he wasn’t completely okay. He’d feel weak, and he’d hide behind his speeches and his optimism and would be ever more careful about where and when he let himself fall asleep. The cry reaches him from behind the door. It sounds like a child, and god, that child is so afraid. This time, Keith doesn’t hesitate to open the door. My Comments: Sweet and simple fic with Keith comforting Shiro after a nightmare.
The Silly Song by StormySeaWitch Words: 1,605 Author’s Summary: Inspired by Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) It’s amazing what kinds of odd Earth things you can find in space malls. My Comments: Very cute fic with Team Voltron just having fun together for once. It made me grin like a little kid.
The Phoenix by 00AwkwardPenguin00 Words: 5,543 Author’s Summary: In which Ulaz is furious (and about to be sick), Shiro and Keith are suspicious, Thace is appointed Chief Babysitter (and is a boss at it), and Lance is hungry. AKA the first oneshot of a triple AU that literally nobody asked for. My Comments: This AU is hitting a LOT of my buttons. In a world where some people can shapeshift into animals, all five Voltron kids have been locked up in Haggar’s lab and forced to undergo horrible things. Most of them are deaged to some extent, and they are incredibly frightened and protective of each other. Enter Thace and Ulaz as FBI agents who clean out the lab and take the kids under their protection. I’m really REALLY looking forward to more of this series.
Not a Feather Out of Place by isabeau25 Words: 1,271 Author’s Summary: Shiro needs some help preening his wings, but it’s often times easier said then done. My Comments: Very cute wingfic with Keith and Lance working together to soothe Shiro and provide necessary grooming without setting off his PTSD. They’re so lovely. And it’s the first of a series, so you should probably subscribe now.
Small Comforts by EdgarAllenPoet for KatherineKatie Words: 5,652 Author’s Summary: “You needed rest. I was providing comfort.” My Comments: Wonderful Dads of Marmora fic with the theme of Kolivan grooming Keith in various scenarios. The first two are very fluffy, but the last one is not. It made my heart ache in a good way. A good, good way.
Warmth by bookwormgir1LH Words: 2,226 Author’s Summary: Stranded on an alien planet after a crash, Pidge and Hunk struggle to survive. Cuddle number 6: For warmth My Comments: Sweet and good. Huddling for warmth is always a winner.
The Void Stares Back by aleria Words: 8,210 Author’s Summary: The darkness in front of her was so real, she wanted to reach out and touch it. My Comments: Creepy and atmospheric exploration of a Lovecraftian horror scenario. Pidge just wants to understand, but sometimes you don’t get answers.
Light it Up by BossToaster (ChaoticReactions) Words: 13,398 Author’s Summary: After the events of Spark to Ignite, Shiro picks up the pieces. My Comments: Fluffy and wonderful aftermath and recovery fic, perfect follow-up to a fic I previously recced. You should read it all, but basically Shiro was locked in the dark for several days and ended up smashing up his prosthetic arm in his (completely justified) panic, so now he has major adjustments to do while Hunk and Pidge figure out a replacement. Plus he’s scared of the dark and feels embarrassed about it. So yeah anyway this fic is perfect and there’s lots of cuddling, I love it. You probably will, too.
Previously Recced Fics That Updated:
Bromances in Space (27976 words) Coran's Guide to the Care and Keeping of Earthling Humans (35293 words) The Ones Who Were Left Behind (52377 words) Defying the Odds (28643 words) As Color Fades Away (149703 words) The Machinations of Perception (55318 words)  - now complete Ten Days (64896 words) Taking One For The Team (30581 words) Little Crystals (4511 words) Gate Keeper (95943 words)

So! @h0l0graphic and I were chatting and got this brilliant idea for an AU!
BASICALLY it’s kinda like a werewolf au but probably with more control. We didn’t get that far. But the Galra and the paladin’s change into the animals they are based off of or are similar to. So far we have
Sendak - Chinchilla (He’s fluffy!) Zarkon - Komodo Dragon (reptilian and large, VERY dangerous) Haggar - Owl or some other bird (she seems bird like and is clearly smart)
Shiro - Lion (brave, strong, dangerous. Even though the lionesses are the hunters) Pidge - Pigeon (pun, and small but smart) Keith - Panther Lance - Dolphin? Or something at least semi-aquatic (he loves water in general, Paladin of WATER, and dolphins are social and playful) Hunk - St. Bernard (large and sweet and fluffy but can be protective) Allura - Appaloosa (elegant but powerful) Coran - Peacock (males are the brightly colored, they can be mean(coran can probably hold his own in a fight, but avoids it as best as he can), and are social)
We might edit and add on to this as we come up with more stuff. And I am tempted to try drawing these when I get a break XD

how come you ship sheith if you're anti billdip
HOOOOO BOY. Congrats, Anon, I took a whole minute of silence for this one. I’m gonna put this one under a cut. Below is a character analysis on why Sheith strikes a cord with me and a little bit on why I don’t ship billdip.
The two ships have no point of comparison. I don’t even know… how you jumped straight to billdip after questioning why I like Sheith, but I have to assume you’re speaking in reference of the age gap.
Let me put it this way, the incomprehensible age gap between a 12 year old and a trans-dimensional mind demon that’s been around since the beginning of time is the last reason why I abhor that ship. Let me just clear this up right away and say that- in terms of age difference ALONE- The Voltron creators left their ages incredibly ambiguous and haven’t confirmed any actual age for ANY of their characters, as far as I know. Keith is stated to be “Late teens” and Shiro straight up isn’t even given a point of reference. It’s entirely possibly that they fall in line with my headcanons of Keith being 19.5 and Shiro being 24. In terms of age difference and power dynamics, let me tell you that It’s still a little…. ehhhh. Being 21 years old, I know that the difference between a 19 year old and a 21 year old can be pretty noticeable. When I was 19 with a 21 year old girlfriend there was a slight power dynamic and I sorta felt it. It wasn’t that strong, but I was still infantalized every so often and therefor not always taken seriously. When you also throw in that Shiro is Keiths superior officer as the Leader of Voltron, things start getting really unsteady in terms of the potential for a healthy relationship. When you also throw in that Shiro carries a lot of baggage from his time enslaved by the Galra, the possibility of a healthy relationship with someone four years younger than him goes down a lot. Okay now lemme take this to a new comparison for perspective.I think a more appropriate comparison would be my dislike of Tonks/Remus from the Harry Potter series. If Tonks and Keith are both willing, enthusiastic consenting adults in love with an older person who has been through an immense amount of stress and suffers from PTSD, then why do I think one is okay and not the other?EASY!!! Trust. Trust and Control. I think that Tonks love for Remus was pure and I really liked it. She saw that there was far more to love within Remus than there was to fear and she trusted him with all of her heart, and she was good for it! She’s not the one under question here, Remus is. Remus was never able to trust her ability to cope with his intense baggage. He rejected her love because it made him uncomfortable, then he second guessed their marriage. He flat out regretted having a child with her and he even ran away because he couldn’t cope. I’m sure that he loved his moments with her, I’m sure that when she was in the room then she was all he could think about, but if in the moments that he had alone to himself- if ALL he could think about was how much he was screwing up her life just so he could be happy, then is that a really healthy relationship? Sure he may have loved her, but he couldn’t trust that love.Why not? Well, I have a theory. Remus spent most of his life as an outcast living in a society that hated him on principle. He grew up with anti-werewolf propaganda screaming that he was a monster. Even if people didn’t know he was a werewolf, their anti-werewolf attitude still reinforced an image that He Was Wrong. He was an unloveable beast. The only time he felt truly comfortable was with his close knit group of friends in school and that’s because they not only accepted he was a werewolf right off the bat, but then went above and beyond to change THEIR LIVES just to make his better. Remus then had to watch the world descend into a horrific war that further demonized his kind, but on a more personal note it killed everyone he knew and loved, save for one who was imprisoned for becoming a murderer himself. He dealt with this alone for 12 years. Tonks grew up in a world after this war. She was safe and loved, smart and promising, with a golden ideal for the world. Her only major outstanding difference- being a metamorphmagus- was seen as a blessing or a fun quirk. Her crystal view of the world may be no less valid than his jaded view, shes not WRONG to believe in the best, but for him all he can think of is what straw is going to break the camels back and ruin her. Lets compare this to Sheith. Shiro and Keith have both been through the runner. We don’t know much about Shiro’s past, but what we do know can lead us to assume that he was prominent, trusted figure within the Galaxy Garrison and likely rose to his reputation as a legendary pilot quickly within his career there. As far as we know, his strife begins with the Galra abducting him. It’s hardly necessary to remind us that his time fighting as a gladiator for Zarkon was so traumatic it left him with heavily suppressed memories. Basically, it was a FUCKTON of traumatic stress in not a lot of time and to cope his memories went caput. His experience with the Galra has had a lasting negative effect on him, but largely he’s been able to work through a lot.Keith has been through a lot of stress too, and over mostly a long amount of time. We know he grew up mostly alone. We don’t know when his father left or died, but by the time he’s left the Garrison he’s an orphan. He has issues with authority, suggesting that even when his father WAS there he was still an unreliable person (though Keiths vision of his father depicts him as meaning a lot to Keith, so I doubt he was intentionally abusive) Keith is still undergoing a lot of stress, finding out that he is in part Galra and having the pressure put on him as heir to lead Voltron, among other things. Throughout both seasons we see that Keith is most comfortable relying on Shiro for stability. Keith undoubtedly trusts and loves Shiro in 100% canon (romantic love is debatable, its a ship its not canon). Now what’s interesting is that in season 2 we see the tables turn and Shiro right off the bat is put into a position in which he must rely on Keith or die. Shiro has no problem putting his life in Keiths hands and never once doubts him. From then on we can see him beginning to lean on Keith as a second in command, minimizing the power dynamics between them. I’ll be the first one to admit that I don’t have a lot of solid evidence to go on in terms of balancing out the age gap and the power dynamics, but that being said I’ve only ever watched Voltron (season 1 and 2) once, whereas I’ve seen Gravity Falls in its entirety no less than six times at LEAST and I’ve been reading and rereading Harry Potter for my entire life. I’ll probably need to do some hardcore character studying to really pin down why I like it so that I can explain myself eloquently. But please know, I’m kind of doing that right now. My fic Put it Together, Break it Apart is both a follow-up to Season 2 and an exploration of Keith/Shiro and where it does and doesn’t work. I will say this, I legitimately think that if Keith ever DID pursue a romantic relationship with him then Shiro would be cautious to say the least. Any relationship between them would HAVE to be built on mutual trust and the absolute certainty that this was something that BOTH of them wanted, and both Keith and Shiro would be setting some pretty hardcore boundaries.
TL:DRBilldip isn’t a good comparison for the relationship dynamics, so I brought up Tonks/Remus. Tonks/Remus have similar starting points as Shiro and Keith in their relationship, the difference being that Remus does not trust himself nor Tonk’s ability to cope with his baggage, and therefor tries to control the relationship in a negative way by deciding to run away from her. Shiro and Keith both trust each other equally and Shiro has spent the last season lessening his control over Keith by slowly abolishing the power dynamics between them.
Now I’m gonna go into why billdip is a horrible ship.
Bill abused Dippers trust and gained absolute control over him. Dipper said “no” and Dipper said “Stop” and Bill didn’t care. Dippers literal actual body was used by Bill for Bills own purposes against Dippers will. It was so traumatic for Dipper that he showed symptoms of PTSD. Do you understand what I’m getting at here?
Let me say it clearly, then, for the people in the back. Bill’s actions may not have been sexual in nature, but they are allegorical to that of rape. Dipper was a victim of extreme violence and manipulation at the hand of Bill. And that doesn’t even begin to cover Bills actual literal reign of terror over his family, his friends, his town, and his concept of reality. I can’t even begin to explain why the ship is unhealthy, are you sure we watched the same show?

Sunday Ficnic Week 2: Supernatural
Characters: Basically everyone
Word Count:1789
Warnings: Descriptions of blood/death
Lance groaned as he hefted his backpack onto his shoulder,” I don’t understand why we have to move on so soon Shiro. This place is perfect. Plenty of forest for Pidge to run in, animals for you to hunt, and a lake that isn’t polluted or drained for once! Can’t we stay for like a week more?”
Stop complaining Lance. We can’t risk staying here. Pidge said she spotted hunters ten miles north of here and unless you want to risk being turned over to the Glara we need to leave,” Keith growled. Lance sighed but didn’t argue with the nephilim. After all he’s not saying anything that isn’t true.
The Galra. A group of insane extremist hunters and witches that catch supernatural folk to use as weapons. This group of runaways and refuges don’t stand a chance against them. How much damage could they do anyways? A vampire with PTSD, a nephilim with anger issues, a werewolf separated from her pack, a centaur , the last two fae alive, and a male siren that ran from his shoal and responsibilities against a hundred hunters trained from childhood. Lance shuddered at the odds.
But could they really blame him for wanting to stay just a day longer? The lake was so clear; it reminded Lance of home. He knew he was the one to willingly leave his family behind, but that didn’t make it any easier.
“Lance buddy, you coming?” Hunk called into the cave they had called home for the past month. Lance snapped out of his thoughts to see that the rest had already left.
“Yeah I’m coming,” he replied. Lance walked to the cave entrance before pausing and glancing back into the new barren cave or the last time. Lance sighed again, repositioned his bag, and ran to catch up with the others.
~~~
They had been on the road for three days before Pidge announced that they were being followed, and Shiro confirmed it.
“They hid their tracks really well, That’s why we only just were able to confirm that they were, in fact, trailing us from the lake den,” Pidge pushed her glasses back in place.
“We have to set up a portal then,” Shiro said. His face was drawn and grim, and one could see the tension in his body. It must have been incredibly stressful to be the choicemaker. Lance certainly didn’t envy him.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea? I mean we don’t do portals often for a reason. Not only does it take almost an entire day to create one, but Allura will be defenseless during that time,” Lance argued. If the trailers had Galra backup nearby they needed all hands on deck.
“Well do you have a better idea?” Keith shot back at him. Lance could feel his hackles rising. If he was in water his fins would certainly be flared.
“Yeah, actually, I do,” Lance retorted. “We continue on to the closest body of water. You lure them in and I kill them. Nothing can beat a siren in his natural habitat. Plus they wouldn’t expect a thing. After all no one expects a male siren to be so far away from the ocean.”
“And if a fleet of Galra do appear when we’re at the lack we’d be screwed with no way of escape,” Keith’s eyes flashed with frustrated anger.
“I’ll be fine Lance. We need to get far away. We don’t know if the two hunters contacted a fleet or not. It’s best to listen to Shiro and Keith. We have to open a portal,” Allura cut in before Lance could start another fight.
Lance knew that she was only being logical, but he still felt a pang of hurt n his chest. Worthless. 7th wheel. Idiotic. He shook his head slightly to get rid of the negative thoughts that he knew (he hoped) weren’t true and tuned into Shiro giving orders to everyone for them to carry out once they found a suitable clearing to make the portal.
~~~
So Hunk and Pidge ran off to collect the different necessary ingredients, Keith and Shiro went out to scout for any dangers, and Coran and Allura began the ritual to prepare the small clearing they found for the ritual. And Lance, well Lance didn’t really have much of a job. Shiro told him that he was to guard the clearing itself. The thing was, all they had to do was ell and both Keith and Shiro would be back at their sides in seconds, so in reality Lance’s job was to stay out of the way.
It didn’t really matter anyways because everyone returned to the clearing as the sun was beginning it’s descent. Fae magic required precise timing, and this particular spell could only be performed at twilight or pre-dawn. It had something to do with universe fabric. In all honesty fae magic went right over Lance’s head.
Everything was going well, and soon all they had left to do was wait the couple of hours Allura needed to find the exit location. The waiting was the most stressful part. They could no longer run without risking Allura’s life and sanity, and they had nothing to occupy themselves with except each other and their thoughts (usually about worst case scenarios).
By the second hour Pidge and Hunk were talking about this invention or that, Keith was “training”, Shiro was pacing, and Lance had climbed a tree to get away from Coran’s storytelling.
Lance was swinging his leg back and forth and thinking about his family when he was it. A flash of purple in the trees. The same purple of a Galran cloak. Shit.
“Hey guys,” Lance called down. “I think I saw something.”
Shiro stopped pacing, “What did you say Lance?”
“I said I think-”
Lance was suddenly blasted out of the tree by a burst of purple. Druids. He watched numbly as he fell towards the ground. There was a blur and then he was in Shiro’s arms.
“Lance!” the others shouted, but it sounded to Lance like they were far away. Nonetheless Lance turned to where the sound was coming from in time to see Galra emerge from the edge of the clearing.
Keith was the first to engage them, slashing and snarling like an avenging angel. His enemies fell left and right. Foot soldiers Lance thought to himself.
Shiro set Lance down against a tree before crouching to look him in the eye. He was looking to see if Lance was okay enough to be left defenseless for a time.
“I’m fine,” Lance smiled. He, in fact, was certainly not fine but Shiro was their best fighter and they needed him. Shiro waited one more heartbeat before nodding and running into the bloodbath.
Lance looked down at where the blast of magic hit him and wow that looked bad. Like really bad. His right side was black, and tendrils of purple magic was creeping into other areas of his body. Not to mention that it burned. In fact it felt like Keith’s fire was in his veins and burning his body from the inside. It felt like those horror stories of merfolk getting captured and slowly dried out in the unforgiving sun.
“Allura, Coran how long until the portal is active?” Shiro called out as he sunk his arm into a Galra chest and ripped their heart out before leaping at another soldier with fangs bared.
“A couple of tick more number one. Hold in there,” Coran answered.
This wasn’t good. Every soldier the team took down seemed to be replaced by two more. Not to mention the druid he saw that had yet to make an appearance.
“Well well well what do we have here?” a voice echoed through the clearing. Speak of the devil and he shall appear. Shit.
Someone gripped his good arm, hard, and Lance screamed. It was cold, so cold, but just as painful as the ever worsening wound on his side. That wound has reached past his shoulder and down his arm.
The entire clearing froze. The Galra stopped fighting because they were in the presence of Haggar. The team had stopped fighting because Haggar had Lance.
“Let him go Haggar,: Shiro growled. He didn’t dare take a step forward with Lance in her grasp.
“Why hello Champion. It’s been a while,” Haggar smiled maliciously. Keith clenched his hands into fists and took a step forward. Haggar noticeably tightened her grip on Lance and it became so painful that his vision swam.
“Careful half-breed. You don’t want anything to happen to our friend here now do you,” Haggar droned.
Keith looked ready to rip someone apart, and Lance didn’t doubt that he would have if the portal hadn’t been opened at that exact moment. Nobody moved.
“What are you guys waiting for? Go!” Lance exclaimed.
“Are you crazy? We aren’t leaving without you Lance,” Hunk said. Lance could see the determination burning in his eyes. Lance found similar looks in the other’s eyes as well.
There’s no convincing them to leave without me, Lance thought. But he couldn’t let them get captured. They were his family, and nobody touches a siren’s family.
In the end it was Lance’s protective instincts that ended the stalemate of the two sides. He knew that getting the many Galra under his spell would require too much energy especially in his injured state. His friends on the other hand…
 Lance sang the first song that came to his mind:
 Are you, are you coming to the tree? They strung up a man they say who murdered three.
 The effect was instant. Tension drained out of his friends muscles.
 Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be.
 Hunk and Pidge started towards the portal. Shiro and Keith looked to be fighting his song.
 If we met at mid-night in the hanging tree.
 Coran entered the portal and Allura followed. The Galra weren’t moving to stop them.
 Are you, are you coming to the tree? Where a dead man called out for his love to flee.
 Shiro choked out a pained and panicked,” Lance what are you doing?” Lance could feel his eyes watering. He continued.
 Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be. If we met at mid-night in the hanging tree.
 Keith started walking.
 Are you, are you coming to the tree? Where I told you to run se we’d both be free.
 Hunk and Pidge disappeared into the portal.
 Strange thing did happen here.
 Keith followed Hunk and Pidge.
 No stranger would it be.
 Shiro was the last to enter the portal.
 If we met at mid-night in the hanging tree.
 The portal closed.
 Lance was alone.

some voltron aus i’ve been brewing up. might be triggering and nsfw, there’s too much to say so really proceed at your own caution and expect the worst.
> the one with all the strings: angry teenage punk keith dates hot dad college student shiro to get back at his parents. it fails because hes a kid and hes annoyed shiro's work as a nurse takes all his time and they break up. some time later, they get back together and it works cause im a sappy baby babeh (and then he dies)
> lance is fucking appaled that li'l emo keith brough black polish in fucking space. keith puts it on in the common room. lance finds it dumb but shiro finds it hot.
> klance where keith cross-dressed and makes lance think he's a chick thru thigh fucking (title, insp: cherry lips/go baby go by garbage)
> psychiatrist!lance hypnoses his patient keith and jacks him after he talks about his feelings for his brother shiro
> klance. fucked up, drunk, but con breathplay
 > (sh)klance. keith (15) is in wuv with upperclassman shiro (19) and really wants to get with him. but he's a virgin so keith's scared that would make shiro think he's innocent and immature so he asks well-known man whore lance (17) to take his v-card. ensue sweet gentle bonage + rimming and innocent blushing keith.
 > sheith. medical kink, hospital aesthetic. heartbroken shiro fucks his comatose hubby keith in his hospital bed before they pull the plug. he's mindful of keith's numerous iv, his body, of the cannula in his nose and maneuveurs him tenderly. he cries and he nuts and keith too because stimuli. lots of handholding and tender kisses and reminiscing. actually became a whole fucking thing too big for its own good about life, death, letting go and freedom.
> shklance. keith wears really short shorts with no underwears and it drives lance mad (and shiro too but he's been there did that)
> au where the galras have already invaded earth and hold humans in slavery. young shiro (16) finds baby keith (12, altean-galra) as he's running away from the ship he was kept captive on. shiro decides he's going to protect that child and basically becomes a brother figure to him.
> everything you have. lance looks at keith and shiro and ponders about their relationship and what they let show. basically hes in love with keith and can't compete because shiro and keith are so selfless and give without any barriers and he's a Sad Boi
> bloodborne inspired au. shiro as basically gehrman and keith as basically lady maria. they're hunters and when keith dies in his arms, shiro makes a doll that looks just like him and uses dark magic to give it life. it doesn't have keith personality – it's docile and calm – but it's enough for him as he fucks it. possible titles: the doll maker, child's play, mirror images.
> dark souls iii au. firekeeper keith + ashen one shiro. they fucc and shiro takes off his mask and kisses his closed eyes.
 > un homme et son péché + a/b/o au. keith is forced to marry grade a shithole sendak even though he's been in love with shiro since forever. follows the plot but keith aborts all of sendak's kids and only births one still born (messy abortions oblige) from shiro because sendak never discovers their affair. he dies from penumonia in the end when shiro comes back from the woods, right in his arms.
> red room. the crew gets sent vids of lance being tortured after he's been captured by the galras. sheith, klance, shklance. (snuff movies basically, inspired from irl darknet red rooms where people pay to see people get murdered)
> in reverse. fantasy au with vampires and werewolves. werewolf!lance and vampire!shiro. tropes and clichés about both monsters are reversed. boozy, dirty vampire shiro who lives in a cabin in the woods. like he's dirty, he smells, he's not very cleanly shaved, he ain't wild but actually really polite and a nice guy. everything he wears his plaid and jeans, he likes to go hunting and he's generally 100% not what you'd expect a vampire to be. as for werewolf lance, he's like personable, likeable, kind of a douche, lives at night in clubs, a rich boy who likes armani suits, perfume to cover up his wet dog smell and clean af. he shaves the fucking animal. he's kind of a dick but still a sweet boy. hates ripping his clothes when he transforms into a wolfie, hates losing his cool. basicaly not what u expect a werewolfie to be. obviously even in that world werewolf and vampires hate each others but actually lance and shiro really get along!! and like each others a lot!! and enjoy spending time together as well as with their tiny, angry little boyfran.
> a/b/o horror. keith is with shiro when theyre at the garrison. so shiro is a teacher and keith is a student, which is super forbidden. and they're an alpha/omega pair. anyway shiro apparently dies and keith actually gets kicked out because... ah shit son he got preg with shiro's baby. it's either a) they know it's shiro and they kicked him out to cover up the fact their teacher was fucking a kid on school grounds b) they think he just went and got preg against school rules. anyway keith ends up all alone giving birth in the desert and his life is shit uvu or another terrible idea: the galras capture keith and realize he's preg, litteraly remove the kid from his tum while he's awake.
> vampire knight au. with keith as yuuki except he's not useless and annoying, shiro as kaname except he's not a piece of shit and lance as zero because muh angst except he's not as emo.

I mean, I kind of get why? Chunks of the fandom have this very strong perception of the galra as Hostile And Dangerous and they project that onto that side of Keith’s heritage. You see it in a lot of really body-horrific “transformation” concepts of like. Keith being slowly physically converted, often under torture, or the process itself is torture- or the idea of “instincts” that are invasive and mind-hijacking. That Keith’s own heritage is an invasion from within or a malicious, harmful influence he has to fight off. (That’s not behind all of it, but it’s a sometimes-unintended impression it gives: that Keith’s heritage is here to hurt him.)
Which in the actual context of the show, just looks ridiculous, because, yes, the galra are very big cat-esque but big cats are not murder machines. Even if they are apex predators, you would not expect a room full of human accountants to behave like a baboon troop as soon as the right stimulus is presented so I’m not sure why we’re expecting a people who have, if anything, had way more history than ours separating them from their early ancestors, to be that way. Big cats are predators? Dude, have you ever looked at a gorilla? Our end of the family tree is not exactly packed with ruminants.
It willfully ignores how Varkon and Sal show us there are ordinary civilians doing a nine to five job and they are no more threatening to the paladins than any of the other civilians they’re dealing with, unless you’re insinuating Hunk would sit down Emperor Zarkon and teach him the joys of cooking.
It willfully ignores the Blade who are at worst cagey and closed-off as befitting an espionage organization whose survival strategy is “if your enemies know you exist that is an immediate problem” and Kolivan who, bluster aside, basically adopted the team as soon as he had a reason to suspect that was his business.
It even ignores that the rank-and-file foot soldiers are literally also just people doing their job. If Zarkon’s high command is stocked with bullies, it’s because we watch him putting them there, setting them up. It’s because he’s artificially built an environment where being nasty and eager to subjugate gets you pushed up the ranks and being thoughtful, conservative, or empathetic gets you dragged off by robots.
We have multiple onscreen shots of Zarkon trying to cultivate the galra into generic space orcs and endless, endless piles of evidence that despite lavishly rewarding the jerks and punishing the kind, the latter party is still there after ten thousand years of Zarkon’s rule.
There is nothing inherently ominous or malicious about the galra. There is absolutely nothing barring that Keith, legitimately, as the show has overwhelmingly pointed us towards, had a loving mother who was worried about him and left her blade with him so he could find his way home- back to the Blade, back to her people. The same people who, as soon as that weapon awakens, immediately start trying to look after Keith and take care of him.
A lot of times in the fandom there is this image of the galra as inherently vicious, which... is ridiculous to me because that’s the exact garbage Zarkon’s insisting on (the guy we’re not supposed to agree with?) and we also see him blatantly enforcing it, which, if this is the inherent nature of the galra, he shouldn’t have to. If this is the inherent nature of the galra, Varkon and Sal shouldn’t exist. The Blade shouldn’t exist. Kolivan shouldn’t be accusing Zarkon of being an awful corrupting influence.
This image of the galra as basically Space Orcs contrasts the fact that as little as we have of Mom Kogane suggests that she really did love her baby. That if anything, in practice, the galra tend toward getting massively emotionally attached. That even the unpleasant high-ranking bully characters we encounter do things like cultivate companion animals (The warden and Laika), have genuine romantic relationships (heavily implied between Zarkon and Haggar, considering Lotor), or are deeply, personally moved by actually being able to bring happiness to people (Sal would not consider Hunk a genius if people enjoying their food didn’t leave an impression on him)
Canon supports the idea that Mom Kogane was a real person, and totally capable of falling in love, and having a child, and wanting the best for that child that she could provide given her situation. It’s only that odd thread of fanon of the remorseless, heartless galra- unsupported by even the antagonistic galra in the empire- that can’t get behind that.
The galra are not “the evil” and Keith’s story is not about relying on his morally upright human lineage to fight off The Evil.
I mean, Keith says so himself: “I didn’t turn galra.” This is a presence that’s been here from day one. Keith did not have any more trouble signing up to try and save the universe than anyone else. The knife was with him in the very first episode. He’s always had purple eyes- unusual for a human, and a color associated with the galra. In fact, comparing Keith to most of the Blade, they fight the same way- high-speed forward rush with a bladed weapon. Keith’s bayard takes the form of a katar, which is sometimes used specifically as an off-handed weapon for a swordsman who fights with a ‘proper’ more conventional sword in his other hand. As in: his bayard took its shape, from the start, to accompany the marmora blade.
The trial literally framed that Keith had to say no to both the image of his father and the image of Shiro. That giving up either his heritage or his role as a paladin was the wrong answer.
If anything, I think that the show is building towards the fact that Keith, much like Pidge, needs to find his family, beyond just the paladins. Because as close as they are, and as much as they mean to each other... more or less all the other paladins have things waiting for them back home.
What Keith had on Earth was pretty much nothing. He’d been expelled from the Garrison and it’s unclear if he’d really want to go back. He doesn’t really talk about it as something that meant that much to him, and when everyone else discusses their plans, he offers a lackluster “I guess I could look for [my family],”. The guy had a shack in the middle of nowhere and yeah, the peace and quiet was nice but that’s an awfully bleak thing to make your entire life out of.
Earth and humanity are not a valiant strong shackle holding Keith back from inherent evil. This isn’t a werewolf movie where Keith is at war with some “inner beast”.
The Red Lion’s thing is instinct. If anything, that suggests that Keith trying to hold back, resist, and distrust himself is bad for him- it’s running upstream against his established virtue which requires letting go and trusting- trusting that if he drives his hoverbike off a cliff he will be able to catch himself before he hits the bottom. Identifying what he needs to do and doing it- hitting fast and with conviction.
Physiologically these are things that it looks, a lot, like the galra as a species, and the Blade’s fighting style as a philosophy, specialize in. These things align directly with Keith’s fighting style, aptitudes, and virtues as a paladin.
It’s a big neon sign that actually, exploring his heritage further is the right thing to do. This is the good thing that’s going to help Keith. Are there going to be growing pains involved? Absolutely. But so far, the nastiest shakeup- Keith isolating himself from the team and being rejected by Allura- is tying to an issue Keith brought to the table, not in his blood, but in his mind.
It ties back to how hard it’s been for Keith to find ‘his place’. To feel connected and belonging. It ties back to isolation and the fear of rejection and being a bad person. Which has very little to do with being a galra, except- once again, looking at most of the other galra in the cast, who tend to get really attached to things and people? Keith’s heritage is lining up with the rest of his character.
The sorta TL;DR here is- there’s a basically baseless-in-canon lens on the galra as inherently Dangerous, Malicious, and Predatory. This gets projected onto Keith, and it gets projected onto Mom Kogane, as the source of his galra heritage.
