Galleryyuhself - forty seven years ago Trinidad and Tobago made a bold move. Happy Republic Day.
...........................................
from the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago.
#OnThisDay in 1976, Trinidad and Tobago had already become a Republic. This new status was declared on August 1st 1976, when the last Governor-General Sir Ellis Clarke was sworn in as the first President of Trinidad and Tobago. The holiday is commemorated on September 24th because it was on this day in 1976 that the first Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago met under the new Republican Constitution.
So what changed? When Trinidad and Tobago became independent in 1962, it was still part of the British monarchy—meaning that between 1962 and 1976, Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II was the Queen of Trinidad and Tobago. The monarch’s constitutional roles were delegated by the Governor-General, who was Sir Solomon Hochoy from 1962 to 1972. In 1972, Sir Ellis Clarke succeeded Sir Solomon Hochoy as Governor-General.
After over a decade as an Independent nation, it was decided that Trinidad and Tobago should become a Republic with a Head of State elected solely by its citizens. In order to bring about these changes, a Constitution Commission was formed in 1971.
The Commission held meetings around Trinidad and Tobago, and consolidated their findings and recommendations for constitutional reform into a report that was submitted to the Governor-General, Sir Ellis Clarke, in 1974. A Constitution was then written to replace the Order in Council of the Queen and in 1976, the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Act of 1976 was passed.
This newspaper is part of the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago Newspaper Collection. If you are interested in learning more about our country’s path to becoming a Republic, you can check out our Exhibition, “The Road to Nationhood: Crown Colony Government to Republicanism.” The newspaper clippings in this Exhibition are courtesy the Trinidad Guardian and the Trinidad Express Newspapers. Galleryyuhself - PETER MINSHALL’s death - ABSOLUTE FAKE NEWS on a grand scale
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and a reflection by Richard Burton on Facebook - Thank you Peter Minshall for still being hereHow come Neil Guisseppi knew that he needed call Peter Samuel to confirm that one of Trinidad and Tobago's greatest national treasures, Peter Minshall is still alive before he posted on his page? How come the folks at TV6 know that all rumors need to be verified as true before they are first reported to the public? It is one thing for some attention-seeking, idiot wannabe to start a rumor, but for legitimate news houses to run with it and report it on national television, and on their online platforms without first verifying both its source and veracity is lazy, sloppy, and irresponsible. This is not journalism, this is rumshop reporting. As I watched the "mas" today I kept reflecting on the magnificent presentations we received from Peter Minshall over the years. I remember as a child and even as a young man watching the pretty mas even when all we had was black and white TV. We used to watch the parade of the bands all day waiting patiently on Mr Minshall's band to cross the Savannah stage. The masqueraders in the other bands were dancing and having a time but Peter Minshall saw mas as more than just a party. Every year Minshall gave us street theatre. I could never forget the year he presented "Rats" and Paul Keen Douglas narrated the story behind each section.
Tumblr media
"Callaloo" and "The River" were epic presentations. My proudest moment as a musician occurred in 1990 when my band Fireflight supplied road music along with Charlies Roots for Minshall's winning band Tantana. I got to see Tan Tan and Saga Boy up close. Such are the memories I have of Minshall's mas. So, for somebody with nothing better to do than start a rumor of his passing on Carnival Tuesday of all days, well that is as effed up as it gets. However, it is still not as bad as a TV station ruining the Carnival spirit by reporting on it without any hesitation, ironically close to the time of day when Minshall's band would traditionally be getting ready to hit the Savannah stage.Look, it was bad enough to have to endure those two women's lack lustre Carnival commentary all day, but to have them report on something this important that turned out to be not true is the proverbial icing on the cake. Holly B. or Maurice Brash, or Allison Hennessy would have checked first because they were real journalists.Trinis like to kill people too much, and they love to carry bad news even more. Those two women and the director at TTT who gave them the green light all need to be either suspended or fired. They also need to stay off Facebook while they are on the job.Thank you Peter Minshall for still being here. Here's hoping that we will one day see another Carnival presentation from you.
Peter Minshall (1941 - still with us) May you stay forever young.

MSJ challenges Prestige Holdings: Do better
~Galleryyuhself~ From June 7th 2021
POLITICAL leader of the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) David Abdulah is calling on Prestige Holdings Ltd to "do better" for its employees. His comments were made after news broke that workers at KFC, one of the many fast-food franchises owned by the company, will no longer receive a weekly stipend.Abdulah was speaking at a virtual press conference on Sunday morning.
Tumblr media
On Saturday, media reported that since government’s decision to close all restaurants on April 30, KFC workers had been receiving a $150 weekly stipend. But, it said, this will be discontinued. In response to this, Abdulah reminded executives of the company: “It is not just the franchise that has bills to pay – it is the hundreds of workers employed by Prestige Holdings that have bills to pay, rent to pay.”Directly addressing the company’s chairman Christian Mouttet, Abdulah said, “Why don’t you mortgage some of your property?”The media report also said when the stipend cut was announced, workers were told the company “has bills to pay.”Abdulah said, “We have had far too many people in the past six weeks dying.
Hundreds and thousands of workers are out of a job and in many cases receiving no income whatsoever.”He said leaders across the Government, Opposition and business community are “not setting the right example for the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”To sum up those leaders’ response thus far to the covid19 pandemic, he said it is “not good enough.”He said the solution cannot be to continue “locking down more and more (but) we need to create a balance.”

What the hell is “GOOD DESIGN”for a newspaper?
GalleryYuhself ~ Has chosen to take a look for itself at one of the newspaper layouts deemed “GoodDesign” by the Society for News Design. The Guardian was chosen.
Right away, it is extremely clear that there is a lot of white space as you look at the paper. You are aware of an order. You know that the grid system is in effect.
A national newspaper has a great deal to do for its citizens. It has to report information that they can get from their phones, radios in their cars and i-pads and computers. What do newspapers have going for them, when so little has changed in their world? For Trinidad and Tobago it has been sensationalism for a very long time. But that does not have to be the case. National newspapers can set tones that suggest an intelligent citizen, a strong country and a very informed one. Design can make a newspaper a document that becomes relied upon as though it were the latest I-Phone.
A national newspaper I believe, reflects its country. So, what is our local newspaper saying about us? It may be saying that we the citizens are loud and crime focused and (...fill in the blank here...) does that make good design? Does that mean that this is true of us? Can we do better? These are questions to look at and focus on in 2017 in Design in Trinidad and Tobago.
