Galleryyuhself - A look at the unique, special life of a Calypso Icon who has now left us. The Great Denyse Plummer.
Galleryyuhself is pleased to share images over the years of her many calypso albums. It is a study in times passing fashions, fads and fun.
...........................................................................................................................
Galleryyuhself - from one the many fans...
Waking up to the sad news of the death of one of my calypso heroes and former calypso monach Denyse Plummer
She was a true patriot, sister of the soil, kaisonian legend and raw talent who changed the course of the artform, making it something that belonged to all of us, regardless of class, creed or skin colour!
She remained loyal to her country and the artform, despite facing discrimination and hostility as some viewed the colour of her skin as having no place in the calypso arena. She was greeted with a toilet paper waving audience who threw corn husk at her in Skinner Park, yet she persisted and sailed towards stardom, to become one of most successful and well known calypsonians worldwide, taking the crown with her rendition of my favourite love song to Trinidad and Tobago - Nah Leaving.
Listen to it here and see her perform in all her Trinbagonian glory!
youtube
As a young calypsonion, I myself faced hostility from some of my fellow junior artistes, who did not shy away from telling me that kaiso isn't for "white people", referring to the fact I was a few shades lighter than what they deemed to be accepted into the prestigious circle of who can represent OUR culture on the big stage. Denyse was a huge inspiration to me then and will remain so forever.
Thank you, My Queen. Thank you for everything you have done for women in calypso. Thank you for loving our culture and our country so fiercely and unapologetically. Thank you for showing us what true patriortism looks like. Thank you for your beautiful voice. Thank you for the music.
Go fly high now...

Galleryyuhself - PETER MINSHALL’s death - ABSOLUTE FAKE NEWS on a grand scale
and a reflection by Richard Burton on Facebook - Thank you Peter Minshall for still being hereHow come Neil Guisseppi knew that he needed call Peter Samuel to confirm that one of Trinidad and Tobago's greatest national treasures, Peter Minshall is still alive before he posted on his page? How come the folks at TV6 know that all rumors need to be verified as true before they are first reported to the public? It is one thing for some attention-seeking, idiot wannabe to start a rumor, but for legitimate news houses to run with it and report it on national television, and on their online platforms without first verifying both its source and veracity is lazy, sloppy, and irresponsible. This is not journalism, this is rumshop reporting. As I watched the "mas" today I kept reflecting on the magnificent presentations we received from Peter Minshall over the years. I remember as a child and even as a young man watching the pretty mas even when all we had was black and white TV. We used to watch the parade of the bands all day waiting patiently on Mr Minshall's band to cross the Savannah stage. The masqueraders in the other bands were dancing and having a time but Peter Minshall saw mas as more than just a party. Every year Minshall gave us street theatre. I could never forget the year he presented "Rats" and Paul Keen Douglas narrated the story behind each section.
"Callaloo" and "The River" were epic presentations. My proudest moment as a musician occurred in 1990 when my band Fireflight supplied road music along with Charlies Roots for Minshall's winning band Tantana. I got to see Tan Tan and Saga Boy up close. Such are the memories I have of Minshall's mas. So, for somebody with nothing better to do than start a rumor of his passing on Carnival Tuesday of all days, well that is as effed up as it gets. However, it is still not as bad as a TV station ruining the Carnival spirit by reporting on it without any hesitation, ironically close to the time of day when Minshall's band would traditionally be getting ready to hit the Savannah stage.Look, it was bad enough to have to endure those two women's lack lustre Carnival commentary all day, but to have them report on something this important that turned out to be not true is the proverbial icing on the cake. Holly B. or Maurice Brash, or Allison Hennessy would have checked first because they were real journalists.Trinis like to kill people too much, and they love to carry bad news even more. Those two women and the director at TTT who gave them the green light all need to be either suspended or fired. They also need to stay off Facebook while they are on the job.Thank you Peter Minshall for still being here. Here's hoping that we will one day see another Carnival presentation from you.
Peter Minshall (1941 - still with us) May you stay forever young.

_______
Synopsis—
In A Sense of Arrival, Kevin Adonis Browne blends literary, visual, and material forms to present a narrative of Caribbean Blackness. Arguing that the story of Caribbeanness cannot be told through words alone, Browne interweaves essays, memoir, autotheory, and narrative verse with documentary photography, portraiture, Rorschach blots, and images of his own sculptures and art installations. Browne labels this multimodal approach and rhetorical form “Caribbean Nonfiction,” and he uses it to conceptualize arrival as a theory of being. Arrival is practiced through forms of status, return, belonging, nomadism, self-exile, love, loss, presence, and haunting, each of which expresses the vast complexity and urgency of Caribbeanness. At the same time, arrival emphasizes and extends Caribbean ways of being, knowing, and doing. Throughout, Browne challenges readers to follow the archipelagic sensibilities of the Caribbean to look beyond Black death and apprehend the inherent optimism and beauty of arrival. A singular meditation on the art and process of Caribbeanness, A Sense of Arrival is a statement on how the Black Caribbean self comes to be.
Praise
“A Sense of Arrival is a brilliant, beautiful, and unorthodox contribution to Black studies debates and to the reconceptualization of Black Being more broadly. In contrast to current trends, Kevin Adonis Browne is radically optimistic in the face of Black death and nonbeing and works to convince the reader that there is Black thought before, during, and after Black nonbeing. Having asked the question of Blackness and Black subjectivity, Browne’s highly original and philosophical notion of arrival becomes the answer, moving the reader from mere identity or even subjectivity to the ontological question of the nature of being itself.” — Michelle Ann Stephens, author of Skin Acts: Race, Psychoanalysis, and the Black Male Performer
“Structured by a series of arrivals and becomings, A Sense of Arrival is formally challenging and inventive—a beautiful and welcome invitation to think what work nonfiction might do toward freedom and what it might be and require to work toward freedom. This book has much to offer; there is so much brilliance here. It will be an important addition to Caribbean thought and rhetoric, Caribbean studies, Black studies, cultural studies, photography and visual culture.” — Christina Sharpe, author of Ordinary Notes
