there is something sooo fucking good about early seasons ian and mickey, about watching this summer fling turn into something more, the fear that elicited from mickey but him being unable to stop, finding those little moments hidden away and taking all this meaning from small gestures and persevering in dugouts and under bleachers and barely pressed confessions in the back of a church that is soo good for my brain

like i am very glad mickey gets to shout his love for ian from the mountain tops and also beat his love for ian into his dad's face but when he was clenching his teeth shut and his love for ian was coming out regardless ohhhhh baby i was eating

"Today's word is..."

Mickey glances up from his magazine as Ian tears off yesterday's "Word of the Day."

"...petrichor."

"The fuck is that?"

Ian thinks for a second. "Remember getting stuck at the dugouts last week during that rainstorm? When I sucked your dick so good your legs shook?"

Mickey feels his cheeks pinken at the memory.

"The fuck about it?"

"That nice, sorta earthy smell after. That's petrichor."

Mickey hums noncommittedly. He can't recall the petri– whatever-the-fuck. Only the scent of Ian's citrus shampoo when he later pressed a kiss to Mickey's neck that he pretends he didn't notice.

Today I have done a lot of thinking about fictional charachters because...well my day has beeen horrible and its been better than thinking about that.

I saw a clip of shameless S1 where Mickey is dirty and unclean and I remember how a lot of people have said maybe he didn't really care until Ian came along or started to try for Ian. And sure, that may be part of it, but in my experience, there are so many other reasons people are unclean for, and I think a few would apply to Mickey.

1. I think part of the reasons he is reguarly covered in dirt is that being dirty tends to hide or blend in bruises. It is not going to work completely but enough to make people wonder if that is dirt or a bruise, or if they are seeing it properly. I imagine Terry wasn't light handed in beatings, and the kids were expected to cover for it. While teenage Mickey could say he was in a fight younger Mickey would have easily used that just some days old dirt excuse.

2. Lack of hot water or just water in his house. I don't think paying the bills on time was high on Terry's list either, and we know the house was basically a dump. It wouldnt surprise me if they reguarly had no hot water or if they did it run out quickly with the old water heater and you did not want to be the one causing Terry to have a cold shower. Or he saved the hot water for Mandy because he knows she actually really cares about her appearance and being clean

3. As a reason not to have to be with girls. In his first episode, Karen mentions that maybe Mickey is coming to find her to ask her out again and then says basically says along the lines of "I wouldn't because he smells like shit.' Being unclean and dirty means girls are less likely to want to go out with him, so he can ask the girls who he knows will say no then have it be that they are a b***ch who said no, or she don't know what she missing. He comes out of looking like her really doesn't care he got turned down but still leaves the impression his into girls. It is like a protective layer

4. I think caring about your appearance and the way you're dressed is something Mickey's dad would find pansy. Which Ugh, Terry is the worst.

5. I don't think some people really understand how vulnerable being naked in a place you dont feel safe in is. I feel like if Terry is mad, drunk, or just desires it, he would be more than happy to come for you. Being naked and unprepared is not a fun thought. So Mickey saves his showers for when he is sure his alone becauze like hell he is trusting that flimsy lock on the door (if there even is one cause Svetlana just walks in with a hammer on Ian)

Sure maybe once Ian comes along that is more incentive to be clean and presentable but I think he really starts to be clean is season 4 onwards where he knows and admits how much Ian means to him and that he loves him, no longer has go pretend to be into girls (his out or he has the excuse of his married) but also when his dad is in jail and maybe the bills are getting paid, maybe he feels safer in the house.

I just hate the common thinking of, that person is unclean because they don't care. That is rarely the real reason in my experience.

You have complete creative control over how Mickey’s storyline is handled (in a world where Noel doesn’t leave maybe?) What kind of storylines does he have and how does his relationship with Ian process? Go!

I’ve spoken about this before here, and here. What could’ve (& should’ve) been in season 6 and beyond with Mickey is my Roman Empire.

I’d obviously have him not go to prison, or he goes for a a couple months or so but in the end is found not guilty and released.

The main reason I would have LOVED if Mickey was in season 6 is actually Yevgeny (and Svetlana). The potential that storyline had! I would focus his season 6 arc on building a relationship with his son and how that helps him heal a bit from his childhood. That’s really where I think the writers were planning on going with his story.

I would say at the beginning, he’s still quite focused on Ian. But Ian is still pushing him away. Mickey is drinking a lot and drowning his sorrows and just in general feeling terrible. But eventually he pulls himself out of it. I think it’d be maybe Svetlana or Mandy who tells him to get his shit together. (Ian’s arc would remain largely the same but no Caleb bc fuck him).

I’d have Svetlana and Mickey still living together and him slowly warming more to Yevgeny and realizing how much he cares for him and loves him. It would have been SO good to see Mickey actively be a better father than Terry and how much that puts his own childhood into perspective for him.

He’d freak out and be hard on himself, often convincing himself that he’s a terrible dad and the kid is better off without him. But he’d be trying. One night Svetlana has to go out and he’s alone with Yevgeny and he has to bathe him and rock him to sleep and everything and Yevgeny is screaming and crying as toddlers do and Mickey is freaking out and trying not to lose it, but eventually he calms him down and rocks him to sleep and Mickey’s just like holy shit. He looks at his son and knows he’d do anything to keep him safe and it puts his own childhood into perspective bc he’s like how could anyone hurt this baby??? He’s breaking the cycle and trying not to repeat the sins of his father and we love that for him. He’s not perfect and he makes mistake but he’s trying!

Also I’m obsessed w what Mickeys reaction would be the first time Yev calls him Dada/Daddy. Maybe he’d be shocked at first and it’d freak him out and then he’d be like “yea kid, I’m your dad.”

He ends up spending a lot of time with Yevgeny and Svetlana and the three of them become a little dysfunctional family. Mickey and Svetlana hijinks PLEASE. Idek for sure what they’d be doing. But they’d spend a lot of time together, and really grow fond of each other. They become family. They still act like they hate each other, but they don’t. They’d become an accidental bestie/co parenting duo. At this point, Yev and Svet are kind of all Mickey has left, so he’d rely on them a lot. I can see him becoming really protective of them too. And family is important to Svet.

Also Mickey and Mandy get back in touch and she calls him after the dead guy incident for help and he brings Svetlana. Simply because I wanna see what Svetlana would do in that situation. Would be iconic. Also would keep Iggy and Colin in the show and have them hang out some bc they were funny and I miss them. Milkovich family bonding please!

I would like to see him still interact with the Gallagher’s - I’d definitely have him be the one to help out Carl with everything. Mickey would be the one to talk some sense into him and help him through it. I feel like he’d still sometimes talk to Debbie too. I would still have him & Ian not see much of each other, though. I think Ian avoiding him is quite in character for Ian.

One day he’s running a scam or dealing and almost gets caught and Svetlana is like “ok, we need real jobs.” And he goes out and gets a job as a bartender or bouncer somewhere.

When it comes to Ian, I think it’s better if they actually end up not seeing much of each other for a while. But Mickey hears that Ian is becoming an EMT and he’s really proud of him.

Eventually, they’d find their way back to each other. They start as friends and they both have to get passed everything that happened and Ian would have to get passed the “I’m not worthy of love” thing that he dealt with in season 10. One random way I can see it happening is that Ian hears that Yevgeny is in hospital (he’s fine, really high fever but he gets better) and is really worried so he goes to see him. Mickey is there worried out of his mind and they start talking and that’s the beginning of it.

I think Mickey’s priorities would shift and this would lead to a healthier dynamic between him and Ian. But I’ve gone into detail on that here so I won’t talk any more about it lol.

I haven’t thought all that much of what he’d do beyond season 6/7. I think in the following seasons he’d deal with balancing his family and his relationship with Ian. And also him dealing with more of his past trauma and everything (similar to what happened with Terry in season 10, and the PTSD he’d likely struggle with post canon). I’d love to see him talk to someone about it but I do feel like that’s something that he wouldn’t be ready for for years. I’d also like to see him become a tattoo artist or do any job he’d enjoy, but again that would probably be a future/later seasons storyline.

I feel like this isn’t great and I’ve worded it better other times lol. I probably have more but that’s what I’m saying for now! Might add to it if I get more ideas lol.

Holy fuck. Ian thought and went closer. The way he hold the gun showing his tense muscles beneath the fabric. His good intentions to not fuck the Milkovich again blurred by the view of this body.

"Hey" He greeted him, earned a shy smile.

Only minutes later Ian hold Mickey up against a wall in an dark alley.

"Fuck Firecroch. Never thought guns are a turn on for you." He presses between moans.

"Shut the fuck up tough guy. It's not the gun. It's only you." Ian admits. And then out of nowhere Mickey kissed him for the first time.

"'Course, I wanna be with you," Mickey answered. Ian kissed him and Mickey pressed back. They kissed and kissed and touched until their clothes were gone and they were falling onto the soft earth. Ian marveled at his boyfriend being surrounded by a bed of blooming, colorful wildflowers. His eyes shone, his smile was so big. 

"C'mere," Mickey beckoned. They kissed some more. "Ian, Ian…

"Ian! Ian!" 

Ian's eyes opened as Fiona shook him awake. "Get ready, you're gonna be late!" 

"I'm awake!" 

Fiona gave him a look but left. Ian exhaled. Only a dream. Shit.

Even if Mickey wanted to shave it, he couldn't. His hands are still fucked up from the damn fight that got him in violation of his parole in the first place. He's bitching about it all to Ian while working at the Kash and Grab when Ian offers to shave it for him. And if Mickey wasn't such a goddamn idiot, he would have never agreed to let him. But he does.

Mickey honestly couldn't think of many times they'd gotten to just chill since he got out of juvie. Somehow they'd gone from sitting upright, kinda tense, to sprawled on the couch, Mickey draped across Ian's chest with his head tucked under his chin. He'd even let Ian sucker him into another Supernatural episode, even though he just didn't get it.

"I’d rather have you, cursed or not," Dean pops off at Cas over the aging TV speakers.

Mickey snorts, "They're fucking right? Tell me they're fucking?"

Ian let out a laugh that shook them both. "I like to think so."

quick shameless review of the first three seasons after having binged them for over a week straight: this show has some weird and lowkey cringy plotlines going on, but overall I love it. and I think from season 1 onwards it only got better.

some of the characters annoy me immensely, like karen, and - for completely different reasons - a little bit fiona (even though she's obviously a great person) and steve/jimmy bc they are a bit overacted imo (and why does she look so perfect all the time?). but apart from them, I think most of the characters are incredibly authentic. sometimes I really forget they're acting, like veronica and kevin.

and of course mickey and ian have my heart. takes me back to the early seasons of sex ed with adam and eric (except a little more violent). I only wish they had more screen time, but I hear that will be the case in the later seasons. someone said "I wish this show was only about those two" and don't get me wrong, I still like the show as it is, but I would love that. I honestly sometimes just wanna skip to their scenes, especially when there's some dumb plot going down again...

season 1 mandy (visually) reminded me so much of maeve too. (and the actual maeve and lip would really like each other I think) the recast made a completely different character out of her imo - no hate though, I still think she's an interesting character. I only loved her friendship with ian in season 1, but then the chemistry kind of disappeared with the new actress.

plot wise it's a little like sex ed too bc of all the teenager stuff and many sex scenes, but in general it's more like oitnb to me. perfect dramedy with the really serious stuff paired with dark humour (which doesn't make me laugh exactly, but I weirdly love the vibe) and I guess the social setting as well. but it also kind of reminds me of house m.d. (I think about that show all the time btw but I haven't watched it in so long), for one thing probably bc they are both set in the early 2010s. but house and frank would also have a great time drinking together - completely different ends of the education scale, but same sly cleverness and drug addiction. and very random thing to add, but that I keep thinking about: frank's not a good person but he's has been sexually abused (and actually raped) a lot in this show so far and it either gets laughed off or completely turned around. anyway, so weird that I thought this was gonna be like a comedy sitcom, but I'm so positively surprised by what it really is.

now I'm taking a break though bc it honestly got a bit too much and I unfortunately need to do other things besides watching shameless as well...

Ian grabs Mickey and slams him against the fence. They just finished in the dugout, but Mickey is still smirking. The shotgunned beer can lays in the dirt. 

Ian knows better than to kiss Mickey. Mickey has made that crystal clear. But Ian thinks about it all the time. 

Mickey raises his eyebrows. “You wanna go again? What’s this for?” 

Ian falters. He doesn’t know. He just knows he wants to stay with him, that Mickey drives him wild, that he isn’t ready to let go yet. 

One day we’ll leave this neighborhood, Ian thinks. One day we’ll be free.
