Galaxy Force claims to have such good graphics they'll kill you! No, literally it says that on the back cover. This game is very elusive for USA set but it's also unique as we're most Activision games on the system. There's an easy tell, if your cart doesn't look like this, it's safe to say you have a different region version of the game. It's not worth hunting down either. The SEGA 3D Classics Collection: 3D Galaxy Force 2

To tell the truth, I had never played Galaxy Force 2 prior to its PlayStation 2 remake in the SEGA Ages 2500 series. My hometown got some of SEGA’s more popular cabinets, but this one never made it anywhere near me, for whatever reason. It felt like I was uncovering buried treasure as I played it for the first time. It didn’t hurt that the version I was playing was a rather well put-together remake by M2. The game is just as fun as the other shooters SEGA was known for at this time, and its technology was quite impressive. It’s a fairly short game, but the game’s six stages offer up a lot of Star Wars-style thrills. I only wish I could have tried it in its original form, because I hear the deluxe cabinet was quite the mover and shaker.

As good as the PlayStation 2 version was, it was playing it on the Nintendo 3DS that really sold me on the game. This is one of the finest examples of what these 3D remasters can do for classic games. It’s not just that the game becomes more of a visual spectacle in 3D. No, the game actually becomes far easier to play, and much more fun as a result. Without a 3D effect, the interior locations can be a little tricky to visually process. With that slider turned on, it’s as simple to comprehend as a fully polygonal game would be. M2 also redid all of the textures to make things less pixelly, though you can play the original after clearing the game once if you want. You can also adjust a wide variety of options to make the game as easy or hard as you would prefer. I’m not sure if Galaxy Force 2 is the best game of the 3D Classics line-up, but it has certainly benefited more than most from its inclusion. Efforts like this make me a little sad that we’re seeing the end of the generally under-used 3D effect of Nintendo’s handheld.

Play It Because: You want to see what that 3D slider is really there for.

Bonus Trivia: Although the game is titled Galaxy Force 2, it’s basically just an update to the original Galaxy Force that fixes some bugs and adds a couple more stages. This was a thing you could do in the 1980s video game industry.
