She only lasts a few weeks before caving and telling her brother that she’s Ladybug.

The Guardian – Fu is his name – was vehemently against revealing her identity again, already annoyed that she’d told Jason. Privately, Marinette thinks that Fu can “go fuck himself”, and maybe Jason would have said it out loud, but she does not.

Instead, she ignores his wishes and tells Tim anyway.

To his credit, her brother isn’t even surprised. He just quirks a smile during their scheduled video call and says in a light voice, “I guess it runs in the family, then, doesn’t it?”

Marinette is inclined to agree. After all, what are the odds that both of them ended up being protectors of two cities?

A week later, Tim calls her to confirm Marinette’s suspicions that Gabriel Agreste is Hawkmoth.

“He’s slippery. Paid to have all the security cameras around his home removed, but I traced akuma sightings on social media and marked them on a map and what do you know, his house was right in the center of the circle. I also checked out the property. He literally has a butterfly window, Mari. Everything in his house is butterfly patterned. It checks out.”

“Thank you, Tim-Tam. I’ll take care of it from here,” Marinette says. Her mind is already working, forming a plan to take Gabriel down. Permanently.

It has to be public. The city wouldn’t believe it otherwise, and some are already accusing Ladybug and Chat Noir of creating the akumas themselves so that they can make themselves look good by defeating them.

Exposing Gabriel as Hawkmoth would cause the downfall of his company and result in the loss of thousands of jobs, but Audrey Bourgeois had a Parisian branch of Style Queen that was still fairly new and looking for employees, and she knows that Audrey would most likely hire all of Gabriel’s employees out of spite.

“Are you sure you don’t want us to help?” her brother asks. “You don’t have to do this alone, you know.”

She knows. She wants so, so badly not to do it alone, to have her brother by her side as she faces down a magic user that could turn her into a puppet in the blink of an eye if she allowed herself to feel just a little bit too much, but she can’t bring him into this. Can’t bring anyone else into this. Tim already spends his nights stopping rapists and murderers and seeing all the horrors that Gotham has to offer. He doesn’t need to see what Paris throws at its people as well.

“It’s a miraculous matter, Tim-Tam,” Marinette says instead of voicing any of those thoughts. “Besides, bringing anyone else in puts them at risk of akumatization. It’s best to keep as few people involved as possible.”

“Okay then,” Tim responds, not fully managing to hide the disappointment and apprehension in his voice. “Good luck, Mari.”

The corners of her lips twitch upwards in a tiny smile. “I am the living embodiment of good luck, Tim-Tam. It will be alright.”

It is easy to poke and prod at Gabriel’s ego until he thoughtlessly lunges, crashing through his own window onto the street below when she dances out of his way.

Ladybug follows, dropping and rolling with a familiarity that comes from being forced to do that same motion countless times, and she toys with him, dodging, ducking, but never really attacking, until the news helicopters start circling overhead.

Chat Noir arrives just as she sweeps Gabriel’s legs out from underneath him, and he doesn’t quite manage to stifle his gasp of horror, all irritation at Ladybug for taking Hawkmoth down without him forgotten when he sees who is underneath the mask.

Ladybug may find Chat Noir (Adrien Agreste, she reminds herself,) a nuisance at best, but she is not heartless. She knows what it’s like, to want to believe that one’s parents are good people. She knows what it’s like when that illusion one tries so hard to maintain finally shatters, and it’s something that nobody deserves to experience.

Chat’s face hardens as Ladybug starts murmuring words in an ancient tongue underneath her breath, casting a spell on his father, who gave up the fight as soon as the butterfly was removed from his hands, to ensure that Gabriel will never be able to touch another miraculous again. He won’t be able to exist within three feet of one.

It’s a good thing she chooses that spell too, because it protects Gabriel from his son’s wrath.

As the authorities are cuffing his hands behind his back, something cold settles in Chat Noir’s eyes as he calls up a Cataclysm and lunges at his father, the clawed hand rippling with dark magic outstretched, ready to disintegrate a living, breathing human being.

Gabriel is yanked backward by an invisible force, pulled out of harm’s way, and Chat’s Cataclysm lands on a chunk of debris instead. The Black Cat is held back by his partner before he can try something else.

“Chat,” Ladybug hisses, as he struggles in her hold, still trying to go after his father, who is being put away into a police car. “It’s done. It’s over. He won’t hurt anyone ever again, and the justice system will deal with it.”

Chat Noir slowly starts to resist less and less at her words, and she takes that as a cue to continue. “It feels anticlimactic, and I know you want to do more. You think we should do more than just let them take him away, because you’ve been fighting on the front lines of this battle since the beginning. But our part is over. Our duty has been fulfilled. He won’t be acquitted, if that’s any consolation. There are mountains of evidence against him.”

Her partner turns around, suddenly, and buries his face into her shoulder as his body jerks with what she realizes are sobs. He’s crying,Ladybug realizes. He’s crying for his father. For who he thought his father was.

When was the last time she cried for one of her parents?

Ladybug reaches a hand up and awkwardly pats Chat Noir on the back for a moment before she spots the reporters.

“Let’s take this to our usual meeting spot,” she whispers to her partner, and he nods, composing himself in an instant. Janet would have liked Adrien, she thinks. Gabriel’s parenting style was evidently similar to how Marinette had grown up.

Five minutes later, they’re standing on the Eiffel Tower, overlooking the city they’d sacrificed so much to protect.

“This is it, isn’t it?” Chat Noir asks, turning to her. “This is the end? There’s no use for us anymore.”

Ladybug inhales slowly, taking in the view from above one last time and committing it to memory. Not that she needs to – her eidetic memory ensures that she’ll never forget. It’s for the sentiment, she supposes.

“Yes,” she murmurs. “We have to give them back now. Say goodbye to our kwamis.” She’ll miss Tikki’s company, she thinks, but not as much as she misses Jason’s. The kwami was sweet, yes, but she didn’t understand Marinette’s need to do something other than being Ladybug.

“Where do we even return them to?” Chat questions, and then she remembers that he’d never been told of the Guardian’s existence.

Ladybug unhooks her yoyo from her side, tossing it up and down one last time as she prepares to swing. “Follow me,” she says, and then she throws the yoyo and leaps off the side of the Tower.

Fu’s massage parlor is just as inconspicuous as ever, and somehow, no one is walking along the street when Ladybug and Chat Noir enter.

The Guardian has been expecting them – there are three cups of tea sitting on the table in front of him.

“Ladybug, Chat Noir, please sit,” he says in his wheezy voice. They oblige, but the tea remains untouched on the table.

“Chat Noir, it is time to return your miraculous,” Fu states, and the two of them stiffen, immediately picking out what’s wrong with that sentence.

“Why am I not included?” Ladybug inquires, her polite tone holding an undercurrent of danger. “There cannot be a Ladybug without a Black Cat.”

“Well, you see, you won’t be using the Ladybug,” the Guardian explains with a slightly condescending look on his face. “But there can only be one Guardian, and I’ve chosen you to be my successor.”

The sound of Ladybug’s palms slamming on the table makes the other two people in the room jump. “Absolutely not,” she declares as she stands up. “I did not agree to become the Guardian. This has never been discussed.”

Fu looks up at her with confused eyes. “But you became a candidate when you agreed to put on the earrings, and Chat Noir is simply not fit for the job.” Out of the corner of her eye, she sees Chat Noir wince, but he does not disagree.

“I put on the earrings because people were dying,” Ladybug growls. “Because this city needed something, someone, to look up to, and there was no other viable option. The Guardian is never in the light. They spend the rest of their extended lives hiding in the shadows to protect a box of magical jewelry. The Guardian is not a symbol of hope, because nobody knows the Guardian exists. I put on the earrings to be a symbol of hope, not because I wanted to, but because people needed one. The people don’t need one anymore, and I don’t want to continue doing this.”

“I was fighting a war, Fu,” she spits, furious words laced with venom. “I was fighting a war with one ally by my side and we were both children. Now that the war is over, I am no longer needed, so I am leaving. I want the shreds of innocence I had before this war back, but that is not possible, so I can at least try to move on from this instead. Let me move on.”

Without warning, she reaches up and carefully takes the earrings out of her ears. She would have loved to rip them off in one swift movement, but earrings were not that type of jewelry. The Ladybug suit disappears in a flash of pink, and then she is Marinette again, standing in a massage parlor with a pair of red-and-black earrings in her hand and two sets of wide eyes fixed on her.

“Marinette,” Chat Noir breathes. “Oh my god, I… I’m so sorry.”

Marinette drops the earrings on the table in front of them. “Are you sorry for being an ass, or just sorry because the person you convinced yourself you were in love with was an illusion?” she asks, not looking at anyone or anything in particular as she pivots on her heel and strides for the exit.

When she reaches the doorway, however, she pauses, eyes still fixed straight ahead of her. “Oh, and Adrien?” she calls, eliciting two identical noises of surprise. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry too. About your father, of course.”

Then she opens the door and walks through, never once looking back as she sees the city that once weighed so heavily on her shoulders from the ground looking up, instead of from above, gazing down.

She’d spent some time wondering how she was going to adjust to life in Paris after that, knowing what she knew about Adrien and Gabriel and what Adrien knew about her.

As it turns out, she only has to go through one week of feeling Adrien’s green eyes on her at every available moment in class and going out of her way to avoid him, because her mother dies.

It’s surprisingly anticlimactic.

Janet Drake was always such a formidable woman. Her mere presence in a room could make grown men cower. To Marinette, she seemed almost invincible – always superior to everyone else, untouchable as she lashed out with quick with and a sharp tongue and long nails digging into her children’s shoulders. If there were ever any cracks in Janet’s façade, if it even wasa façade, she’d never seen one.

And yet, in the end, it turned out that she wasn’t untouchable after all. She’d died because she drank poisoned water out of desperation, even as Batman was right there. Batman had arrived to save them, he had freed them from their bonds, and the first thing they did was drink water poisoned with nerve toxin. Jack had survived, though he was in a coma and paralyzed.

Janet did not.

And that was it. That was the end of a woman that had dominated Marinette’s life for so long, a woman whose voice still hissed and lingered in her mind, reminding her to sit still and be silent and never, ever let your emotions show on your face.

Tim – he’d never had that mindset thrust upon him as forcefully as she did. After all, Tim had a father that didn’t despise him for his gender. Jack took charge of molding the son, and so Tim is crying, when he tells her all of this. He thinks he’s being subtle, but she’s his sister. She knows better.

Marinette didn’t care for her mother much, but she supposes she could give the dead at least some modicum of respect.

So as she packs her bags and books the next available flight to Gotham City, Marinette honors her mother’s wishes and does not shed a single tear for Janet Lynn Drake.

Being pregnant again was not on Vicki Vale's agenda, not when she's raising five boys and has to take care of her sister's children that she bas to take care of. Trying to keep the pregnancy from the father of her child, Bruce Wayne, wont be easy when she has to interview him at a charity event. But when she throw ups on Jack Ryder's shoes while in mid conversation, there's not much left to hiding it now. Vicki then suddenly find's herself living in Wayne Manor with the kids and learning along the way what it truly means to be a family, oh and visits from alternate reality characters does not help.

Tam for the otp thing

• My NOTP for them

Tam and any of his owners. They don’t deserve the beautiful light he emits and deserve to burn. Also no to him and Oberon because they see each other as pseudo father and pseudo son.

• My BROTP for them

Tam and Luna are the ultimate BrOTP. They’ve been with each other through everything since they were kids and they would fight and die for each other. When he and Ciri get married, he’s going to ask him to be her maid of honor and when she becomes Mrs. Luna Sorrotai Barric she will ask him to be her Best Man because he really is the best man. Not all men? You’re absolutely right, Tam Sirius Zione would never treat me like this.

Also Tam and Val have a very special relationship where he sees himself as her big brother and tries to set her on the right path. I really see their relationship as a shyer, more dapper Greg Universe and Amethyst from Steven Universe. He just wants what’s best for the little vent gremlin.

• My OTP for them

The Breakfast Club reigns supreme and is the fluffiest ship ever to fluff. He is so happy to finally meet someone like him and just wants Ciri to know how much she’s loved and how much he wants her to live her best life. For him, she’s been life goals and wife goals since he first said hi to her.

• My second choice pairing for them

I can’t really see Tam with a lot of people besides Ciri. Of course, he and Pax would be the best anxiety couple who protect each other, but really if Luna wasn’t gay, they would be really cute together.

• My fluffy pairing for them

Ciri and Tam is the fluff pair, hence Breakfast Club. They just want to parent their four kids in peace and raise them as happy as they can. They would have a beautiful little cottage on Dryas where The Life and Death fam can visit them as much they like.

• My angsty pairing for them

When baby Tam had a crush on young Gabriel, he told Luna that he was going to marry him one day and Luna replied “In your dreams, he is too cool for you.” Then Gabriel disappeared and Tam grew up and Gabriel got old. Now that they are chronologically the same age, if they got together it would be angsty to see how much time they missed together.

• My favorite poly ship for them

I still have a soft spot for Tam, Ciri, and Val. Val wouldn’t feel any physical attraction to him but she’d have fun kissing him and cuddling with him because she loves cuddles, and Tam would protect his girls and serenade them with his sweet music and baked goods.

• My weirdest pairing for them

Keeping It All Straight

Kristoffer Gair, author of Falling Awake III: Requiem

Falling Awake III: Requiem could have had a blooper reel if it was a movie. I’m not sure you can make a blooper reel from the printed word, but holy smoke did I have some blunders while writing this one! See, here’s the thing. Writing a novella is fine, and writing a second book that has to follow information set forth in the novella is fine since the second book happens to be a prequel. But moving forward again and having to keep straight events from the novella AND a prequel? It’s enough to make your eyes cross and forget to dot your I’s on the page.

Let’s start with something simple. The character of Alex Shao. Likes I said, simple, right?

You’d think so, right up until one of my editors pointed out I’d been spelling his last name as Shoa. And Tam Dinh? There were a few Tam Dihn flubs. Heck, Frank Margason became something else altogether. Another editor had an issue with Tam’s name being too close to his father’s name, Nam. Tam and Nam. Then there was the Shao’s dog, Bao. Bao Shao. Okay, I changed Bao, but I still love that name for a dog and I kept Tam and Nam.

A big, big, big issue I came across happened around the middle of the story when Alex takes Daniel downtown to see the AIDS quilt. There’s a conversation that takes place between them and Alex talks about having seen David Bowie in concert the previous year in Chicago, and just what that experience meant to him. It turns out I misread an online article and David Bowie didn’t play a show in Chicago at the time the book took place. He hadn’t played Chicago in a very long time. Well, crap. So I chose the Sting and Peter Gabriel concert…up until an editor mentioned someone Alex’s age would listen to more age-appropriate artists than my ancient ass would. I went with Adele. I listen to Adele. I just hope I’m allowed to.

The villains in the story proved problematic because several of them have come back from previous lives, lives that were explored in Falling Awake II: Revenant. Try keeping their personalities straight along with their age in relation to the age of the protagonists. I suspect if someone wants to know why the book is so bloody long, it’s because I needed to keep everything clear in my head, which could only be accomplished by writing it out in detail.

I’m still miffed about that David Bowie blunder. Alex has a poignant bit of dialogue about the experience and it just would have sounded so much better talking about Bowie due to the man’s legacy. Oh, well. Win some, lose some.

Oh, here’s something else. I originally had Daniel, Tam, and Alex living on a dead-end street. I chose Eagle Lane because a very good friend of ours, Marianne Labahn, lived on Eagle Lane. Eagle Lane isn’t a dead-end street and I knew that. It just didn’t occur to me until after I’d referenced it being that way in the story. Thank God I didn’t write the book using a typewriter. Can you imagine having to go back and retype an entire chapter because you’ve made a blunder like that?

Eye colors changed, hair color changed, clothing changed… This is why I will probably never write another book this length again. Or, if I do, everybody will look exactly alike, so then I won’t have to worry about all those other potentially confusing details. Because that’s a sane decision!

My editors help me look sane and like I know what I’m talking about. The truth, however, is amusingly far from.

I'm not much of a gardener even though I worked for two years at a garden centre. Penny does most of the work and I am around for the heavy lifting. I try to be a supportive spouse and I assisted with some of the weeding yesterday. I get the same feeling of satisfaction after cleaning up a flower bed as I do after reading a pile of comic books. The added hubby points are a bonus.

Detective Comics #1007 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Kyle Hotz (art) David Baron (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). The team-up with the Spectre concludes with the rescue of Jim Corrigan. This was a nice 2-issue story and now the Spectre leaves Gotham City. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

Black Hammer/Justice League: Hammer of Justice #1 - Jeff Lemire (writer) Michael Walsh (art) Nate Piekos (letters). I thought this was going to be a tam-up story but it's the old switcheroo where the two super hero teams wind up in each others' universes. I'm guessing the rest of this 5-issue mini will be each team trying to return home. This is good exposure for Jeff Lemire's Black Hammer characters which I liked, so you should check it out.

Catwoman #13 - Joelle Jones (writer) Fernando Blanco (art pages 1-14, 19) Hugo Petrus (art pages 15-18) Joelle Jones (art pages 20-22) John Kalisz (colours pages 1-19) Laura Allred (colours pages 20-22) Saida Temofonte (letters). That crazy Creel woman finally gets her hands on the artefact but the rest of the story will have to wait until Selina gets through the "Year of the Villain" (YOTV) tie-in. Catwoman is made an offer that she can refuse, or not.

Thor #15 - Jason Aaron (writer) Mike del Mundo (art) Mike del Mundo & Marco D'Alfonso (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). Four Thors and seven realms ago this whole thing started. Now that it's over find out what happens to everybody in this epilogue to War of the Realms. I particularly liked the fate of Malekith. I am so looking forward to the next story arc with art by Esad Ribic.

Naomi #6 - Brian Michael Bendis & David F. Walker (writers) Jamal Campbell (art) Wes Abbott (letters). Origin story complete. From the looks of things on the cover, Naomi is going to meet up with Young Justice and that's okay with me. This book is every bit as good as Ironheart used to be.

Ironheart #8 - Eve L. Ewing (writer) Luciano Vecchio (art) Geoffo (layouts) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Riri goes to Doctor Strange for help in finding out what's been happening in her life for the last few issues. There's s portal of power that she needs to track down so she goes from Chicago to New York City to who knows where else. This is so exciting and I've got to say I like the slightly more mature Riri that Eve is presenting.

Symbiote Spider-Man #4 - Peter David (writer) Greg Land (pencils) Jay Leisten (inks) Frank D'Armata (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). A new and different element is added to make things fun and exciting in this Spider-Man versus Mysterio story. This reminds me a lot of the old Amazing Spider-Man plots where Peter gets ambushed by some super villain while on his way to see Aunt May. Will our boy make it to breakfast? Find out in next issue's thrilling conclusion.

Young Justice #7 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) John Timms & Dan Hipp (art pages 2-3) David Lafuente (art the other pages) Dan Hipp (colours pages 2-3) Gabriel Eltaeb (colours the other pages) Wes Abbott (letters). Lost in the Multiverse part 1. This was a lot of fun. I really liked Doctor Fate.

Second Coming #1 - Mark Russell (writer) Richard Pace (art) Leonard Kirk (finisher earth pages) Andy Troy (colours earth pages) Rob Steen (letters). Holy bible Batman, this is some weird super hero comic book. Here we have a wisecracking God and his hapless son Jesus trying to make sense of humanity. God sends Jesus back to earth to learn from a Superman-like super hero. I like this parody. It reminds me of Herbie and the Inferior Five. I will be getting s second helping of this book when #2 hits the racks.

Invisible Woman #1 - Mark Waid (writer) Mattia De Iulis (art) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Did you know that Sue Storm was a part time spy for S.H.I.E.L.D.? Me neither. That fact sets up her mission to find her former partner, fellow spy Aiden Tintreach. Y'know, I was thinking that this story would have been better suited to the Black Widow and I was right on when I got to the last page. Mattia De Iulis's art was the main reason I read the latest Jessica Jones graphic novel and he's why I will add the rest of this 5-issue mini to my "must read" list.

Batman Universe #1 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Nick Derington (art) Dave Stewart (colours) Josh Reed (letters). There's another Batbook on the racks and this one's a 6-issue mini. I think Bendis is going to throw as many DC heroes and villains into this story as he can with the Riddler starting things off, leading to Jinny Hex. If you don't know who she is you should go read the most excellent Young Justice. The story goes international and this issue ends in Amsterdam with the appearance of Deathstroke and Green Arrow. I want to know why Oliver Queen is way over in Europe. Going to read the rest of this one too.

War of the Realms Omega #1- If you're wondering about the spin-offs and changes wrought by the War of the Realms then this $4.99 US epilogue is the comic book for you.

Daredevil played a significant role while wielding Heimdall's sword and his story continues in "God and the Devil Walk Into a Church" by Jason Aaron (writer), Ron Garney (art), Matt Milla (colours) and VC's Joe Sabino (letters).

The double-page ads for "Jane Foster: Valkyrie" has me looking forward to the first issue hitting the racks so reading "The Job I Have to Do" by Al Ewing & Jason Aaron (writers), Cafu (art), Jesus Aburtov (colours) and VC's Joe Sabino (letters) was a nice prelude.

The God of Mischief and now King of the Frost Giants has been a favourite character of mine for decades so I am also anticipating the release of Loki #1. Daniel Kibblesmith (writer), Oscar Bazaldua (art) David Curiel (colours) and VC's Clayton Cowles (letters) gives us a hint as to how Loki will rule in "Born Small".

Finally, we can't forget Frank Castle the Punisher. His never ending war will continue in "Punisher Kill Krew" and the calm before the firestorm is chronicled in "War Orphans" by Gerry Duggan (writer), Juan Ferreyra (art) and VC's Cory Petit (letters).

Marvel's mega crossover events may be predictable now but I like that this one makes some interesting changes to characters that I have followed for a long time. I loved when (spoiler alert) Jane Foster was Thor. Ditto when Loki was a good guy with the Young Avengers. I'm hoping that their new books are worthy of my time. I doubt that Daredevil having magic Asgardian billy clubs will change much in his book but it would be cool to see what they can do and how he uses them. And as always, the Punisher will continue to kill bad guys.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #8 - Saladin Ahmed (writer) Javier Garron (art) David Curiel (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). When last we left Miles he had been captured by some unknown super villain. This issue details the extremely dangerous predicament that he's in. I know Miles will survive these tests and experiments but boy, they sure put him through the wringer this issue. The creative team did an excellent job of making me feel immersed in the story.

Avengers #21 - Jason Aaron (writer) Jason Masters (art) Jason Keith (colours) VC's Joe "Jason" Caramagna (letters). It's practically an all Jason issue. The team relaxes in the aftermath of the War of the Realms. I don't like She-Hulk speaking monosyllabically but she thinks in proper sentences in her thought balloons so that assuages my annoyance. Black Panther didn't get the memo and confronts Phil Coulson and his Squadron Supreme of America. I think this is Jason Aaron's dig at the current administration in the White House. I'm waiting to see where the next global threat will come from. Will it be domestic or alien?

Batman #74 - Tom King (writer) Mikel Janin (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). "The Fall and the Fallen" concludes. I'm not a fan of Thomas Wayne being in this reality so I hope it's the last we see of him for a while. Comparing what Bruce and "his father" are doing with the story of the animals in the pit was very clever and the inconclusive ending heightens the suspense for the next issue.

Black Cat #2 - Jed MacKay (writer) Travel Foreman (art) Brian Reber (colours) Ferran Delgado (letters). The Cat will burgle while the Sorcerer Supreme is away. Felicia and her crew break into 177A Bleecker Street in this weird heist. Getting in was easy. Getting out will be a problem. There was a double-page spread featuring an M.C. Escher staircase that could have had the word balloons and captions arranged better. I had to read the things a couple of times to get the flow right. Other than that minor annoyance this is another fine issue. The last page by Clay McLeod Chapman (writer), Alberto Alburquerque (art), Brian Reber (colours) and Ferran Delgado (letters) was a bit of a puzzler. Is it a teaser for the next story, or what?

The Amazing Spider-Man #25 - Don't judge a comic book by it's cover. Case in point, this issue looked good so I saved it for last. We've got Spider-Man front and center with Mary Jane, Mysterio, Electro and Kindred in the background. This issue sets up a lot of stuff so let's have a look see.

The main story is called "Opening Night" by Nick Spencer (writer), Ryan Ottley, Humberto Ramos, Patrick Gleason & Kev Walker (pencils), Cliff Rathburn, Victor Olazaba, Dexter Vines, Patrick Gleason & Kev Walker (inks) Nathan Fairbairn, Edgar Delgado, Dave Stewart & Laura Martin (colours) and VC's Joe Caramagna (letters) has a brief appearance by Kindred and Mysterio but it's mostly about Electro (the new female one) holding an actress for ransom at a theatre. Mary Jane is the one who comes to the rescue. The Spider-Man subplot has Peter rescuing Doctor Curt Connors from depression. A set up for future stories happens on the last page where a new team of super villains is introduced called the Syndicate. They want Electro to join. Then we have 5 pages that ends with the appearance of Spider-Man 2099. I wonder where Miguel has been? Then there's a 10 page story leading towards a team up with Doctor Strange. The issue wraps up with a 5-page cartoon for the kiddies by Keaton Patti (writer), Dan Hipp (art) and VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Yes, it's 60 pages of Spider-Mania but even a Spider-Maniac like myself cringed after reading this.

Gabriel Tam sighed and dragged a tired hand down his face.

Quietly, he shook his head and stood up, loosening his tie. Why couldn't Samuel do his job for once? Was it really so hard-

Gabriel watched, frozen, as someone opened his study window and crawled through, another person following closely behind them.

"Who are you?"

The question was out of his mouth before he could stop himself.

The two masked figures froze, but before Gabriel could so much as blink the tallest one had pulled out a gun and was pointing it at him. The shorter one was still frozen, slightly hidden behind the gunman.

"I could ask ya the same thing," the man with the gun said, his voice muffled behind the dirty brown bandana.

Gabriel drew himself up to his full height, drawing on every etiquette lesson he had to sit through when he had been younger.

"I'm Gabriel Tam, owner of this house. I'll ask you again, who are you?"

"I'm 'fraid that's none of yer business, Mr. Tam."

The tallest man turned to his partner, his eyes softening, "You go and get what we came for, boy. I'll make sure he stays here."

The man gave a stilted nod and walked past Gabriel, avoiding the older man's eyes.

"Eyes here Mr. Tam."

Gabriel turned, his eyes narrowed.

"Why are you here?"

The man shrugged, his gun steady.

"Let's just say I ain't here for me."

Gabriel wanted to press for more information but before he could the shorter man had come back, a small duffle bag slung over one shoulder.

As he brushed past, Gabriel caught his eyes and the older man drew in a sharp breath.

"Simon."

The man, Simon, froze, his back to Gabriel.

"Are you happy?" Gabriel spat out without waiting for a reply. "You've ruined this family and now you have the audacity to-"

"It ain't audacity if it's his to take," the gunman said, his eyes sharp, "You go doc'. There's something I need to discuss with Mr. Tam."

"Captain-"

The Captain shook his head, leaving no room for arguments.

Simon gave the captain a long look before he nodded. He clambered back through the window, never once looking back at his father.

When the gunman was sure Simon was out, he stalked forward, holstering his gun.

He grabbed Gabriel by his lapels, his eyes blazing. The older Tam swallowed, the collar of his shirt digging uncomfortably into his skin.

"Now, you listen carefully, Mr. Tam. You may think Simon is a chi sin no fu but if there's one thing he ain't it's that. The kid's loyal to a fault, smart and brave too. Three traits I don't know where he got it from 'cause it certainly ain't from you.

He gave up everything for his li'l sis when you wouldn't even look at her letters. You've lost the best pair of kids in the 'verse, Gabriel, and I ain't even sure you realize it."

The man let go of Gabriel and strode to the open window. Gabriel smoothed down his lapels and tried to fix his hair, his head spinning.

Before the rogue reached the window he turned back, his browncoat flapping in the slight breeze. "Oh, and one more thing. You ever hurt them again you ta ma de hun dan, I'll hunt you down. And I won't be so civilized next time. Dong ma?"

With one last look, the man climbed out and shut the window. It was quiet in the study, almost as if nothing had happened. Taking a deep breath, Gabriel pressed a key on the Cortex. He scrolled for a while, searching for a specific number. It wasn't long before he found it. The call connected and he cleared his throat.

"General Huo? It's Gabriel Tam. I have news about the fugitives' whereabouts."

" - was it really necessary kidnapping this... huai dan?"

Mal's head throbbed in time with his heartbeat, the ropes digging into the skin on his wrists.

What the diyu happened?

"Something you don't understand, is that wherever Malcolm Reynolds is, his crew ain't too far behind. It's kind of nauseating to be honest."

Something shifted next to the captain and a hand started running through his hair, tugging at the knots. It took everything in him to keep pretending to be unconscious.

"Are we still in agreement?" the female voice purred and Mal tried not to flinch. He should have known she'd be involved.

"Of course. As long as you keep up your end of our deal," the male voice drawled and Mal could've sworn he'd heard it somewhere before. It sound familiar but something was off, arrogance dripped off of each word and it was enough to make the captain's hand itch.

"You're paying me embarrassing large amounts of money to bring back your wayward brats. There's not much of a reason for me not to," YoSaffBridge said and he let out a silent breath when her hand went away. "Besides, the footage you found led me to my dear ex-husband. I owe you one."

His crew.

Vaguely familiar.

Embarrassingly large amounts of money.

Wayward brats.

Qing wa cao de liu mang.

"Bring me my children, Saffron, and you can kill the piece of le se for all I care."

Mal could hear the smirk in YoSaffBridge's voice.

"You are a very giving man, Gabriel Tam. I wonder why your brats ran away."

I guess y'all can pick up on the fact that I don't like Gabriel Tam. At all. I want to say he might be OOC but who knows?

I'm sorry that this one isn't that good but my perfectly planned outlines are being overruled by new ideas, usually 30 minutes before I need to post. And I finally got a chance to write YoSaffBridge, so yay!!
