A Wavering Conviction
"Fly away, my little akuma, and evilize this lost soul."
Monarch had lost count of the times he had uttered those words, "for Emilie's sake". Every day, he would use his powers to akumatize someone new in the hope of capturing Ladybug and Chat Noir's miraculous and reviving his love. But lately, something inside him has been changing. He felt an ever-increasing distance from the wicked deeds he committed without a second thought, struggling to find a sense of purpose outside of his obsession.
He had always thought that once Emilie returned to life, he would finally be happy again. However, as each day passed, Monarch couldn't shake off the feeling of dread that settled within him at the thought of what would happen next. This fear consumed him even more than his obsession with reviving Emilie.
When Ladybug and Chat Noir inevitably defeated his latest victim and restored everything to normal, Monarch didn't feel quite as angry as before. Instead, there was a new emotion within him that he found difficult to comprehend. It was a relief, but why? Why did he feel relieved when everything was back to normal when he worked so hard to try to make his plans a success?
Confused and frustrated by the emotions he has uncovered, Monarch detransforms in a desperate attempt to make sense of it all. But no matter how much he thinks about it, he still can't find any answers to these feelings.
That same night, Gabriel was unable to sleep due to his worries. He tosses and turns in bed, thinking about what could be done about the situation. His mind slowly begins to form a plan, and when he has finally come up with a possible solution to his conundrum, he looks over at the clock on his nightstand, noticing that it is 3 a.m. He knows this is a terrible hour to enact his plan, especially because he'd need to ask someone for help, but his plan requires another person, someone he trusts. With one last deep breath, he slowly gets out of bed and leaves his room in search of his lair. Though he doesn't want to disturb Nathalie so late at night, he knows that this problem won't be resolved until she gets involved.
When Gabriel arrives, he walks over to where he keeps his kwamis locked away. He searches the rows of tiny animals until his eyes land on the one he is looking for, Daizzi, the pig kwami. He presses the Alliance ring he always wears against the icon at the bottom of the cage, absorbing the power of the pig miraculous. He wastes no time in sending it over to the Alliance of his secretary and partner, Nathalie. If anyone could help him figure out these strange emotions, it would be her. Now he just has to hope that she's willing to go along with his plan.
He exits his lair, not needing anything more, before making his way to Nathalie's room. He's almost positive she's sleeping by now, and while he doesn't necessarily want to wake her, she's a crucial element of his plan, and her cooperation is necessary for it to work.
Gabriel's finger rests on the golden doorknob of the door leading into Nathalie's room, the only barrier separating himself and the truth, trembling with hesitation. On one hand, he wants to know what it is that has changed in him and why his plan to bring Emilie back from the dead isn't as appealing anymore. Yet at the same time, he knows that if he doesn't figure out his new goals and how he can get back on track and achieve what he once wanted, his life will remain in limbo.
Will he continue to be a Monarch or give up his title? Will he devote himself solely to his career and stop trying to bring Emilie back from the dead? He stands there for a few moments, debating these options, before finally making a decision.
With a deep breath, he twists the doorknob and opens the door to his future, perhaps with a bit more force than was necessary. The room is dimly lit by the beam of light that streams in from the door. It illuminates a lump on Nathalie's bed, no doubt her sleeping form. Gabriel steps over to the bed, making as little noise as possible, still not certain as to whether he wants to disturb her or not. He watches her sleep for a few moments, taking in every detail of her face, before sitting down on the bed. Her long hair frames her face in a way he's never seen before. It's been a long time since she seemed so peaceful around him. As of late, it seems like she is always angry at him, and she has every right to be. He had the opportunity to save Emilie and Nathalie, but instead, he chose his desire for power. He's regretted his decision ever since he was forced to tell Nathalie about it on the train. His remorse is indescribable.
Gabriel's heart pounds in his chest as he gazes at Nathalie's sleeping form. For what feels like the millionth time, he notices how beautiful she is. However, this time is different, as the thought lingers, gnawing at his insides. He wonders how many times his chest clenched as he gazed at Nathalie's sleeping form. For what feels like the millionth time, he notices how beautiful she is. However, this time is different, as the thought lingers, gnawing at his insides. He wonders how many times he's pushed away these thoughts and how many times he's had to remind himself that this was merely temporary. Once he revived Emilie, Nathalie would cease to be his partner, and their relationship, which, over the years, they slowly built together, would go back to the way it was before Emilie died.
As he watches her sleep, he can't help but remember all the times they spent together, both before and after Emilie died. She has always been the one he can rely on, the person he can trust no matter the circumstances, and somebody who gives him the support he needs, both as Mayura and as Nathalie. The longer he looks at her, the faster his heart starts to beat until he can't take it anymore and glances away. He gently rests his hand on Nathalie's shoulder before shaking her awake.
Nathalie stirs in her sleep, turning herself so that she is facing away from Gabriel. He shakes her a bit more firmly, and this time, her eyes open slowly. She sits up in her bed, wiping sleep away from her eyes with the back of her hand. She reaches toward her nightstand for her glasses. The first thing she sees when she puts them on is Gabriel's face, illuminated by the dim light coming from the hallway. For a moment, she's disoriented, not sure what time it is or why he's in her room.
"Gabriel, what time is it?" she asks, her voice still groggy from sleep.
"I need your help," he says, ignoring her initial question. His voice is low and urgent, despite how quiet it is. "It's important."
Nathalie can't help but feel a pang of confusion when Gabriel speaks, and she is hesitant to agree. She wants to show him the same loyalty she has always had, yet at the same time, she is stuck between a rock and a hard place, trying to choose between her dedication to her boss and her values.
"What do you need my help with?" She finally speaks up after taking a deep breath and searching his gaze for some hint of what he really needs from her. Her feelings for Gabriel have been so complicated lately. She wasn't sure if she should still support him or not.
Gabriel takes a deep breath, steeling himself for what he is about to say. He's not sure if Nathalie will be willing to help him, but she's the only one he can turn to. "I've been feeling strange lately... And I need you to help me figure out why I'm feeling so... so empty," he says, his voice breaking slightly on the last word. "I don't understand it. I should be happy. I'm more powerful than ever. I'm so close to achieving what I- what we worked so hard for. I should be excited about how close I am to bringing Emilie back, but I'm not. And... I don't know what to do about it."
Nathalie nods in understanding, her expression softening as she listens to Gabriel speak. She's seen how much he's struggled since Emilie's death, and she can't help but feel for him, even after everything he's put herself, Adrien, and so many others through. Even after all this time, she's still willing to help him, despite her dislike of his recent actions. After all, she's been there with him every step of the way. So, maybe she can also be the one to convince him to give up on his delusions and help him move forward with his life.
"I'll help you," she says quietly, reaching out to take his hand. "What do you need me to do?"
Gabriel nods, a small smile making its way to his face. He's grateful for her understanding. He knows that Nathalie is the only one he can turn to right now, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to figure out what's been bothering him.
"I sent the power of the miraculous of the pig to your Alliance. I'd like you to use it on me."
Nathalie's eyes grow wide as she realizes what it is that Gabriel wants her to do. "Are you sure? Will it even work without me being akumatized and without a miraculous?"
Gabriel nods his head determinedly, his eyes never leaving Nathalie's. "I'm sure. It's worth a try. Hopefully, it will give me the answers I'm looking for."
Nathalie takes a deep breath and nods, looking down at her hands. The first was an Alliance, an incredible piece of technology designed to both help people in their daily lives and make akumatized victims even stronger, which she had gotten not too long ago. Next to it is a simple silver band鈥攖he wedding ring that Emilie had worn before her passing. Both had been given to her by the man sitting next to her.
A heavy silence lingers between the two as Nathalie's gaze fixes on Gabriel, one that her steady voice eventually breaks. "Alright, if you truly want this." She inhales deeply and then releases a powerful wave of energy from the pig miraculous, creating an illusion of Gabriel's own design, one that slowly consumes his mind.
As the illusion takes hold of him, Gabriel feels a rush of energy coursing through his veins. At first, he's not sure what to make of it. His body feels lighter than air, and he can feel a tingling sensation in his fingers and toes. But as he focuses on the illusion, he starts to see things that he never allowed himself to think about for more than a few seconds.
The scene around him changes, and he finds himself seated on a bench eating lovers' ice cream. The smell of vanilla and cinnamon fills his senses, almost intoxicating him. He can feel the skintight mask of his Hawk Moth mask pressing gently against his face. He looks up from the ice cream and, for the first time, notices Mayura. She is sitting next to him, smiling softly as she watches him take his first bite. Her eyes are warm and full of affection, and Gabriel feels a strange sense of longing in his chest.
As the illusion continues, Gabriel and Mayura continue to take bites of the ice cream, talking and laughing with each other. He's sure each scoop has its own meaning relating to their love and relationship. meaning he couldn't begin to guess. Gabriel can't help but feel a sense of happiness that he hasn't felt in a long time. He realizes that he's been so focused on achieving his goal that he's forgotten to enjoy life along the way.
Mayura's presence brings warmth to his heart, and for a moment, Gabriel forgets about his desire for power. He forgets about Emilie, about Hawk Moth, and about the pain that has consumed him for so long. He is just a man, sitting on a bench with a woman he cares about, enjoying the simple pleasures of life.
When they finish their ice cream, Gabriel sets it on the side of the bench. Before he can turn back to face Mayura, he feels a light weight on his shoulder. He looks down to see Mayura resting her head on him, her eyes closed, and a content smile on her face. For a moment, everything around them was swept away. Nathalie and he are very rarely affectionate with each other. However, Gabriel can't deny the way his heart swells with a warm feeling he hasn't felt in years. He places a hand on her back, feeling the gentle rise and fall of her breathing. For a moment, everything feels perfect.
"I love you," she says, her voice not yet filled with sincerity.
As Mayura's words wash over him, Gabriel feels a sudden swell of emotion. He can't deny the way he's been taking advantage of her, and part of him is embarrassed by his selfishness. But as they sit there in the warm embrace of each other, Gabriel finds himself wishing he could stay forever like this. A part of him wants to confess how he really feels about her, but an even larger part still holds back, fearful of what the consequences may be.
"I love you too, Nathalie," he says softly, his voice barely above a whisper, not entirely sure whether he wants her to hear him or not.
As Gabriel and Nathalie cuddle on the bench, Gabriel can't help but think about how he's been missing out on life. As much as he wants to be a better person for himself and for those around him, he finds it hard to stay in the moment and savor the simple joys of life. On one hand, he is determined to change his ways and make things right, but on the other, there's a voice inside him that tells him it's too late and that it's impossible for him to ever truly make up for all that he has lost.
Gabriel stared out at the fading illusion, feeling a strange mixture of emotions. He feels a sense of clarity for the first time in years. He knows now what it is that he has been missing and what he needs to do to get it back. But at the same time, he also feels a deep sense of uncertainty, unsure of how to let go of all his pain and his need for power. He wrestles with himself until, finally, Nathalie's gaze makes him break free of the illusion. He realizes she can see the change within him, and this gives him a renewed sense of purpose. While he felt relieved, there is still an element of fear that lingers.
"Did you see what you needed to?" She asks, hoping that this will be the start of something new, something she had never thought possible before.
Gabriel nods, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. He feels lighter and freer than he has in a long time. Yet he's afraid. These feelings, while not new, are still a revelation, and he's not sure where to go from here. He needs to think more about everything he's just learned before he makes any decisions about what to do next.
"I did. "Thank you, Nathalie," he says, his voice filled with a newfound warmth despite his nerves.
Nathalie returns his smile, her eyes softening. "You're welcome, Gabriel. I'm glad I could help."
Gabriel and Nathalie sat in silence, the air heavy with unspoken thoughts. He was aware of his gratitude toward her. She had always been there for him, even when he was undeserving of her companionship. Simultaneously, guilt and shame filled Gabriel, knowing that he needed to make things right to prove how much he appreciated her. While Gabriel wanted nothing more than to remain in this moment forever with Nathalie, he recognized that it was necessary to take time alone. He needed space to reflect on the illusion and his emotions concerning it.
With a soft sigh, Gabriel stands up from the bed, turning to Nathalie. "I think I need some time to think. I'll be in my study."
Nathalie nods, understanding the weight of the moment. "Of course, Gabriel. Take all the time you need."
As Gabriel walks away, he feels a sense of peace that he hasn't felt in a long time. He knows that he has a lot of work to do to make things right, but he's ready to take on the challenge.
In his study, Gabriel sits down at his desk, staring out the window at Paris. He takes a deep breath and allows himself to feel the emotions that he's been trying to suppress for so long. He feels a sense of guilt for the way he's treated Nathalie, but he also feels a sense of hope for the future.
As he sits there, lost in thought, Gabriel realizes that he's been living in the past for far too long. He's been holding onto his pain and his anger, using them to fuel his desire for power. But now he sees things differently. He sees the world around him with fresh eyes, and he knows that he needs to change.
He starts to think about what he can do to make things right. He realizes that he needs to apologize to Nathalie and tell her how much she means to him. He needs to open up to her and let her see the person he truly is, not just the man he's been pretending to be.
It won't be easy, but Gabriel is ready for the challenge. He's ready to let go of his past and embrace the present. He's ready to start living his life again and to enjoy the simple pleasures of life that he's been missing out on.
But at the same time, after everything he's done, does he truly deserve a second chance? He knows that he's made mistakes and that he's hurt people he cares about. He knows that he's done terrible things in the name of power and revenge. He knows he cannot change the past, but those he cares about do not deserve to be burdened by his mistakes.
If he were to tell Nathalie about what he saw in the illusion, he doesn't know what the outcome would be. If she does feel the same way, that'd be amazing鈥攆or a little while. He knows that eventually he'll hurt her, just as he always seems to do. However, if she doesn't, telling her would hurt both of them. Perhaps it's best to simply keep quiet.
Gabriel spends the rest of the day lost in thought, unable to focus on anything else. He knows that he needs to make things right, but he's not sure how to do it. He spends hours staring out the window, watching the world go by, hoping for some kind of inspiration.
As the sun sets over Paris, Gabriel gets up from his desk and stretches. His mind is still racing, but he knows that he needs to clear his head. He decides to take a walk, hoping that the fresh air will help him think.
As he walks through the streets of Paris, Gabriel is struck by the beauty of the city. The way the buildings are bathed in the soft glow of the streetlights, the sound of music and laughter drifting from the cafes and bars For the first time in a long time, Gabriel feels alive.
He walks for miles, lost in thought until he finds himself standing in front of a small bookstore. An idea strikes him, and he pushes open the door, stepping inside.
Gabriel walks down the aisles, each one lined with thousands and thousands of small leather-bound books. The stacks of literature reached the ceiling, and he could feel the weight of the accumulated knowledge pressing upon him. He stopped at a shelf and ran his fingers over the spines, skimming them until he came across a small volume of poetry. Gripping it tightly, Gabriel slowly flipped through the pages, watching as the words fell into place in paragraphs and sentences on each page.
As he reads each line, Gabriel is overwhelmed with a feeling of both admiration and fear. He marvels at the beauty of the words, but he's also struck by how vulnerable they make him feel. While the idea of embracing his emotions has been enticing to him, he's scared of what could happen if he opens himself up too much. As his walls start to crumble, Gabriel feels exposed and uncertain, not knowing how far he should let them fall or who will be there to catch him when they do.
Gabriel realizes just how much he's missed out on by only focusing on his overwhelming greed and desire. He's passed up so many opportunities to spend time with those he cares about. But perhaps most importantly, he's forgotten about the power of emotion, especially the power of love.
For the first time in a long time, Gabriel feels a sense of vulnerability. He realizes that he's been hiding behind his walls of power and control for too long, and it's time to let them down. It's time to open up and be honest with himself and with those around him.
Gabriel finds a comfortable armchair in the bookstore and sits down on it. He takes a pen from his suit jacket and a blank piece of paper and begins to write. As he writes, words flow out of him鈥攚ords that he's been holding back for so long. He writes about his fears, his regrets, and his hopes. He writes about Nathalie, about how much she means to him, and how sorry he is for the way he's treated her.
When he's finished, Gabriel folds the paper and tucks it into the book of poetry. He knows that he's not ready to give it to Nathalie yet, but he's taking the first step toward making things right.
As he stands up, Gabriel feels a renewed sense of purpose. He knows that he has a long road ahead of him, but for the first time in a long time, he's excited about the journey. He knows that he'll stumble and make mistakes, but he's ready to face them head-on.
Gabriel leaves the bookstore and walks through the streets of Paris, feeling more alive than he has in years. He knows that he has a lot of work to do, but for the first time in a long time, he's looking forward to it. He's ready to embrace the present and let go of the past. He's ready to be the man he's always wanted to be.
As he makes his way back to his home, Gabriel knows that there will be challenges ahead. But he's ready to face them with open arms, knowing that he has Nathalie by his side, ready to help him along the way. As he walks through the door of his home, he sees Nathalie waiting for him, a slight smile on her lips.
"Gabriel," she says softly, "are you okay?"
He nods, feeling a sense of calm wash over him. "I am. I've been thinking a lot today, and I've realized that I need to make some changes."
Nathalie steps closer, her eyes searching his face. "What kind of changes?"
Gabriel takes a deep breath, feeling the weight of his words. "I need to be honest with you, Nathalie. I need to tell you how much you mean to me and how sorry I am for the way I've treated you."
Nathalie stands there in shock for a few moments, not having expected him to say such a thing. Then a soft smile spread across her face. "Gabriel, you don't know how long I've been waiting to hear those words from you."
"I know, and I know that I should've said it a long time ago. You've put up with so much, Nathalie. You deserve so much better, and I'm going to do everything in my power to make it up to you. Because I know now that I've treated you terribly, and I'm sorry for everything."
Nathalie takes a step closer to Gabriel, her eyes glistening with tears. "I forgive you, Gabriel. I can see that you're trying to change, and that's all that matters. I believe in you, and I'm here to support you every step of the way. I don't know what provoked this change, but it doesn't matter. I'm simply glad to have you back, sir."
Gabriel pulls Nathalie into a tight embrace, feeling the warmth of her body against his. For the first time in a long time, he feels a sense of hope for the future. He knows that the road ahead won't be easy, but with Nathalie by his side, he can face anything.
Nathalie takes a few moments to get her bearings straight, not having expected the sudden hug. However, after a few moments, she gently wraps her arms around him as well, burying her face in the crook of Gabriel's neck.
As they stand there, wrapped in each other's arms, Gabriel feels a sense of peace wash over him. He knows that he has a long way to go, but for the first time in a long time, he's confident that he can make things right. He's ready to start living his life again, to let go of his past, and to embrace the present.
As they pull away from each other, Nathalie looks up at Gabriel, her eyes sparkling with newfound hope. "Gabriel, what brought about this sudden change in you?"
Gabriel hesitates for a moment but then decides to be honest. "I had a realization today, Nathalie. I've been so focused on control and power that I've forgotten about the importance of love and emotion. The illusion caused by the pig miraculous made me realize how much I've been missing out on."
Nathalie smiles softly. "I won't ask what you saw if you don't want to tell me. I'm just glad that you've had this realization."
Gabriel takes Nathalie's hand in his, feeling a sense of comfort in her touch. He searched his pocket with the hand not holding hers before finding what he was looking for.
"Nathalie, I wrote something for you today." "It's not much, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless."
Nathalie looks at him in surprise as Gabriel pulls out the book of poetry and hands it to her. She opens it up, flipping through the pages until she finds the folded paper tucked inside. She unfolds it and begins to read Gabriel's words, her heart swelling with emotion.
As she reads, she can feel Gabriel's sincerity and vulnerability in each line. Tears begin to well up in her eyes as she realizes how much he truly cares for her. She looks up at Gabriel, who is watching her with a mixture of anxiety and hope, and smiles through her tears.
"It's beautiful, Gabriel," she says, her voice choked with emotion. "I had no idea you could write like this. Thank you for sharing this with me."
Gabriel's eyes lit up at her words. "Thank you for giving me the chance to be honest with you, Nathalie. I promise to make it up to you, to show you how much I truly care about you."
Nathalie nods, feeling a sense of relief and happiness wash over her. She knows that Gabriel still has a long way to go, but she's willing to support him every step of the way.
"Gabriel," she says softly, "I'm here for you." "Whatever you need, whatever you're going through, I'm here for you."
Gabriel takes Nathalie's hand in his again, feeling a sense of gratitude toward her. "Thank you, Nathalie. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Nathalie squeezes his hand, feeling a sense of warmth spread through her body. "You don't have to do anything without me, Gabriel. I'm here for you, always."
Gabriel smiles at her, feeling a sense of peace wash over him. For the first time in a long time, he feels like he has someone by his side who truly cares for him, someone who is willing to stand by him no matter what.
As Gabriel and Nathalie stand there, their hands clasped together, they both know that there will be challenges ahead. But they also know that together, they can face anything.
Gabriel takes a deep breath, feeling a sense of determination wash over him. "Nathalie, I want to make a promise to you. I promise that from this day forward, I'll be honest with you, I'll be kind to you, and I'll treat you with the respect and love that you deserve."
Nathalie's eyes widen in surprise, not having expected such a heartfelt promise from Gabriel. She feels a sense of hope swell within her, knowing that this could be the start of a new chapter in their lives.
"Love...?" She asks, not being able to tear her mind away from his choice of words.
Gabriel nods, looking straight into Nathalie's eyes. "Yes, Nathalie. I love you. It took me far too long to realize it, but I do. I love you, and I always will."
Nathalie feels her heart skip a beat at his words. She knows that this is what she's wanted for so long, but she never dared hope that it would come true. She takes a step closer to Gabriel, her eyes locked with his.
"I love you too, Gabriel." "I always have," she says softly.
Gabriel pulls Nathalie into a tight embrace, feeling a sense of joy and relief wash over him. He knows that they have a long road ahead of them, but he's ready to face it with Nathalie by his side. Together, they can overcome anything.
