colorism in the rpc, especially with regards to filipinos (and southeast asians in general)

hello! thanks so much for letting me do this, and thanks so much for making the rpc confront its own prejudices or biases. i wanted to talk about something that’s been bothering me for the longest, longest time, as a southeast asian who is considered darker. (i’m not dark-skinned by western standards but i am in asia.) the sad thing is that i have been talking about it, but no one listens. i haven’t seen the rpc make a change. funny, that.

let’s start by talking about how southeast asians are so painfully underused, unless they’re mixed with white. i suspect that much of it is because southeast asians = east asians in people’s minds. no. we southeast asians systemically face discrimination and abuse from east asians. do you know that k-pop idols, such as sooyoung (of girls generation) and tzuyu, who may have slightly darker skin are often called compared to “ugly” southeast asians? that ur fav tzuyu is one of the most conventionally beautiful k-pop idols but she’s still slung with hate because she’s known for “looking southeast asian”? that whenever sooyoung is praised by netizens, there’s bound to be a “whoa, she evolved from southeast asian” comment? that crazy rich asians by kevin kwan, based on his own experiences as a chinese-singaporean, describes chinese-singaporeans as being disgusted by ugly, dark southeast asians? that being southeast asian is an insult to many east asians? rpc realize that southeast asians are not the same as east asian challenge. that we deserve representation too and that east asian or half-white se asian rep will not cut it.

now i’m going to be talking a bit less broadly, though i’m sure people of other southeast asian ethnicities could probably relate to this too. why are the only filipino faceclaims the rpc uses half-white?

i just wanted to preface this by saying, of course biracial people are valid. biracial filipinos are not white, they are poc. but at the same time, when the only ones y'all gif and use are half-white, something is up. something is UP. especially when THE most famous actresses in the philippines right now are NOT half-white and they’re usually on the darker side. (idk why but most of the famous filipino male actors are lighter but that’s just the status quo rn; women usually experience colorism worse than men). note: keep in mind these women i’ll show you tend to wear light-colored contact lenses bc they’re pressured to concede to eurocentric beauty standards in some way, even if they get to have their natural complexion.

THE most famous actress in the country, the so-called “box office queen”, kathryn bernardo:

and so many more! and many of them, such as gabbi garcia and kate valdez, have literally talked about being discriminated against for being darker-skinned! and yet they succeeded. and yet the rpc goes out of their way to find b-list, c-list, and d-list actresses like bela padilla and julia barretto to gif, even when bela and julia have a very public history of colorism/racism. here’s bela and julia, two pale actresses mixed with white, who the rpc went out of their way to make resources for, posing with or in blackface and brownface:

yeah, that’s right. to many pale-skinned half-white asians, darker-skinned native asians are just shadows to step out of. please remember this is the message you are perpetuating when you ignore asians who aren’t half white and/or have skin as pale as dahyun from twice.

i know this is “just rp,” but we’ve established by now that writing affects real life too. i am so, so, so exhausted of feeling like i’m the only mun in the rpc who thinks of using filipino fcs who actually have any color to their skin, such as gillian vicencio. i’m tired of playing daniel padilla muses and getting ignored. (funny thing is that daniel has like a quarter white ancestry too, but i guess he just popped out too southeast asian-looking for the rpc’s liking.) this never happens when i play cis, white muses, lol.

i’m tired of the rpc only using james reid, kelsey merritt, liza soberano (who also has a VERY public history of brownface btw! just so y'all know this about your fav “safe” half-white filipino girl), and christina nadin and thinking they’re doing something to promote diversity. i’m tired. i’m tired i’m tired i’m so so so exhausted. PLEASE do better. PLEASE. the actresses i mentioned ALL have plenty of tv show + film clips on youtube. they have interviews. there is no excuse. there is no excuse!

maybe someday i will see faces like kathryn, nadine, gabbi, kate, maris racal, khalil ramos, mccoy de leon, and donny pangilinan in the rpc. maybe someday.

Redemption Chapter 63 New Year's Eve

“So Gabriella, what do you guys do for New Year’s Eve?” Two days after Christmas and both are adjusting to the reality of their engagement.

“We eat a bunch of junk food and watch the ball drop. I usually have to wake Evie to see it.” She tells her fiancée. Fiancée! The word and reality still freaks her out when she thinks about it.

“Would you like some company?”

“Well, it would be nice to have someone to kiss besides Evie.” She replies, smiling at the thought that she would have someone to kiss from now on. It speeds her heart in joyful anticipation.

“I am definitely available for that.” He pulls her close and demonstrates.

“Six weeks!” Gabriella thinks to herself as she prepares for New Year’s Eve. “Six weeks. I will be married in six weeks!” Her shakes a bit at the thought.

“What's wrong Gabby?”

“Nothing. Why?”

“Cause you almost spilled the chips. Your hands were shaky.”

“You are quite observant.”

“Huh?”

“It means you notice things.” She explains. “I was just thinking about how I will be married in six weeks.”

“That’s a good thing. Why are you nervous?”

“There is just a lot to get done.”

“Oh. Can I help?”

“Thanks sweetie. You are by helping your Aunt Jade.”

“K. I like helping. And I will do a good job spreading the flowers.”

“I know you will bug. You will be a good flower girl ever.”

“Yep. Is Aunt Jade coming tonight?”

“Yes she is.”

“Cool we can talk about my dress. I have some ideas.”

“I bet you do. Would you do me a favor and carry the chips out?” She hands her the bowl.

“K Gabby.” She takes it and heads towards the living room. Gabriella watches her with a smile. Oh how she loves her baby sister. She couldn’t love her more if she was her own. She sighs as she pulls the soda and sparkling grape juice oit of the fridge.

That was the real reason she was nervous. Not motherhood. She is beyond ready for that. It was just how she would achieve that vaulted status. Marriage and all it implied. She knows the basics, not completely uninformed. She just wishes her mom was here to talk to. She knows she and Eli will figure it out. But, having another woman to talk to would help.

“What are you thinking about so hard?” Jade's voice interrupts her musing.

“Oh hi Jade. I was, ah thinking about marriage.”

“What about it?”

“The you know, details of the marriage bed.” A blush covers her nrck and face.

“Gabriella Olivia Grant, are you telling me you are a virgin?”

“Yes. Of course.”

“Of course. It would be assumed. That is what you are saying?”

“Well yes. You aren't?” She realizes what her friend’s reaction means.

“No. Not sense Derek in 11th grade.”

“Derek really?”

“Yes really.”

“Jade, why in the world didn't you tell me!”

“I thought you knew. Okay. You have concerns. Sometime, when we are alone, I will address them.”

“Thanks Jade.”

“How’s my baby sister?” Gabby and Jade hear Eli address Evie.

“You're fiancée’s here.”

At the sound of his voice, Gabby's heart goes into overdrive. She and Jade pick up the bottles and head out to greet him. They find him and Evie having a conversation.

“Lace. I like lace and Gabby says I can help Aunt Jade design my dress. And I gets to scatter flowers in the church.”

“You will be a beautiful flower girl.”

“I know.”

“She doesn’t have much of an ego.” Gabby says.

“Not much.”

“The ball comes down and then it is a whole new year.” Evie explains to Eli later that night. She sits beside him sharing chips and dip.

“Yes it will. The year of your sister and I's wedding.” He is talking to Evie but his eyes are on Gabriella.

“Uh huh. And Gabby says there's a lot to do. That's why she is nervous. But, Aunt Jade and I gots the dress. What else is there?”

Eli softly laughs at Evie's single mindedness. “Well Evie, there is the flowers, cake, songs, dance, and a honeymoon destination.” Jade answers her inquisitive niece.

“Oh

What's a honeymoon?”

“Oops! Should gave seen that one coming.” Eli thinks. All three adults look at each other, unsure how to answer her. Finally Gabriella speaks up.

“A honeymoon is a place and time for the married couple to get to know each other.”

“But you know Eli?”

“Yes but, well, we will be getting to know each other as husband and wife.”

“Oh okay.” Evie is accepting but the conversation had brought her mind back to her earlier thoughts and a blush covers her face. Eli sees and reaches out to take her hand and give it a squeeze. A reassuring gesture that reminds her that they are in this together. She smiles and squeezes his back.

“What kind of flowers do you want Gabby?” Jade directs the conversation back to wedding details and leaving the honeymoon discussion and all it implies until later.

“Roses for myself and daisies to honor mom.”

“That will be beautiful.”

“Now you know Eli since you are the only guy here, you must kiss us all.” Jade teases as the hour grows closer to midnight.

“Okay. But only Gabby on the lips.”

“Deal.”

Gabby shakes her head at her best friend. She can't believe she lost her virginity and didn’t tell her. She can’t wait for the details for several reasons.

“When do we wake Evie?” Eli asks. She lays asleep across their laps. He smiles down at her as he reaches out to brush her hair away from her eyes.

“At 11:50.”

“In twenty minutes then. Gabriella, where do you want to go on our honeymoon?”

“I really don't know but somewhere close. I don't want to be to far away from Evie.”

“Oh, you don’t trust me?” Jade feigns outrage.

“Of course I do Jade. It is just..”

“I get it. Was just teasing.”

“Close,” Eli thinks aloud. “We could get a cabin in the mountains. Take advantage of the fact that we live a few hours away from the Smokies.”

“That would be perfect.”

“Okay. I will make arrangements as soon as the holidays are over. Valentine's Day is a busy time.”

“Right. Thanks Eli.”

“My pleasure my lady.”

“Hopefully both of your pleasures.” Jade says with a smile.

“Jade!” Gabriella is horrified.

“Well it is true.”

“But..”

“Did I miss the ball?” A sleepy Evie asks from Eli's lap.

“No bug. Was just getting ready to wake you.” She shuts a dirty look at Jade who just shrugs. Eli pulls them all a glass of the sparkling grape juice to toast the New Year. Evie sits up to take it.

“How long until the ball drops?” She asks, unaware of the underlying tension in the room.

“Four minutes twenty seconds. See the countdown clock?” Eli directs her attention to it.

“Oh. I see.”

They sit, Gabriella and Eli cuddling with Evie as Jade sits beside them. They watch the old year fade away with every tick of the clock.

“Thirty seconds now. Want to count down with me?” Eli asks Evie.

“K.” They count it down.

“Happy New Year!” they all call out together, clicking their glasses. Eli soundly kisses Gabby before kissing Jade and Evie on the cheek.

“I can go to bed now.” Evie informs them.

“Okay bug. Come on. Don't go anywhere Jade. I want to talk to you.”

“Yes ma'am.” She replies. “I think she is mad at me.” She says to Eli after Gabby and Evie leave the room.

“I think you are right.”

“I was just teasing but I shouldn’t. I know she is nervous about it.”

“Is she?”

“Oh yah. I didn’t know. I wrongly assumed she wasn’t.. well that she had experience.”

“Oh. Oh you do.”

“Yes. It shocked Gabby too. But maybe I can help with some of her concerns sonce her mom isn't here.”

“Yah maybe. I can talk to Mike.” Eli thinks aloud.

“Well darn. You too.”

“Yes. I was raised to wait.”

“Wow. Two virgins. That’s kinda cool.”

“We think so.” Gabby says from behind them.

“Hey. Look Gabby. I was teasing. I am sorry if I upset you.”

“It os okay. I just well.”

“I know. It is a sensitive subject. Do you want to talk about it?”

“Not tonight

It is late and..” She trails off, loath to admit her other reason. That this was not something she wants to discuss in front of Eli.

“Ah gotcha. So, Roses and Daisies. What kind of cake do you want?” They discuss wedding details for a bit before she heads home.

“Are you really nervous?” Eli asks her.

“Well yes. I know the basics. But?” she bites her lip and gets quiet.

“Right. I am in the same boat

We will learn together. We have the must important things. Mutual love and trust. We will figure out the rest.”

“Thanks Eli. You're right. It will work out. I am so glad to see the New Year in with you.”

“Me too baby. And every other new year.”

“Sounds good to me.”

Sloooow. She’s drawn to someone physically ( and general fun/in common things ) long before she starts to process that she wants them for something deeper than just ‘fun’ or casual stuff. She tries very hard to tip toe around those she’s attracted to, because she knows in her line of work they could be hurt or killed because of her and her enemies, or because she may not be able to stick around and be loyal. Also, because of her dominant eagle blood, she bonds for life, so “deep love” is a very careful process for her. Casual flings and small bonds are handled with kid gloves. Because the second she sees that she’s feeling more for them than they are for her? She’s outta there before she falls any further. If it’s clear they want her unconditionally and beg for her to stay, and she knows she feels the same? Then she starts to crumble and be soft for JUST them. Everyone else can “Go lick a wallsocket during a thunderstorm.”

I    :   I LOVE YOU.   does your muse find ‘i love you’ easy or hard to say?

Very hard...IMPOSSIBLY hard. she wasn’t raised up in a culture or environment where love is stated. And if she hears it, depending who from, will send her in a panic, or disgust her. She sees too many people throwing that word around and not meaning it, and finds it ridiculous. But for her, personally, she never heard it said to her as a child/teen, (  & if at all presently ) so she has immense struggles processing that anyone would say that to her, or mean it. So saying it herself---It’s like dragging a boulder out of hell; she doesn’t even know if she “feels it right”. And if she suspects she does truly love someone? It’s terrifying to say first. She probably will never be the one to say it first. She needs to be the second person to say it, so she’s “safe.”

K   :   KISS.   is your muse a good kisser? why / why not?

Yes; being truthful here? She’s been around. So she’s had lots of “practice.” Even if her exterior is very stoic and private, when alone with someone she desires, she’s very physical. Becauuuuuse: physical affection of any kind for her is way easier to express than verbal; verbal to her is finalizing and confirming things, ( at least on HER end ) so you can hide a lot of different emotions and urges behind physical acts. Yes, people LIE verbally to get what they want, but she goes into any fling or relationship assuming words are going to be thrown at her that mean nothing. She doesn’t believe 90% of what she’s told from someone ‘romancing’ her. But kissing, that’s easy. And can’t be faked. She can tell immediately what’s going on--lust or love, and depending on who with, she’s either going to give in or get the hell out of there~ Plus, she is extremely sensual so anything that involves kissing or touching is going to be replaced with awkwardness between 2 people.

Best Singles of 2018 but it’s chill this year

This category should speak for itself but I just tacked so many amendments onto the description that it’s like... it just makes no fucking sense anymore. Technically this is a list for any single that was released this year or last year December (since I write these lists in December it’s easier for songs to slip under my radar so I sometimes count them for the next year, like the Grammy’s eh? But then sometimes I let a November 30th release date slide as well... or maybe the single was released earlier but the video would qualify or just... any dumb fucking reason. If you see a song that shouldn’t qualify just trust me to find a loophole so... lezzgo.

Also hey, I guess I’ll just straight up say it then, there’s no best covers, best collaborations OR best pop songs list either, I just kinda threw them all on here. With a good portion of this list being kpop I’d have to make a whole different kpop list too? appearance: i am 5'7" or taller i wear glasses (i am half-ing this one because i wear contacts, but i wear glasses sometimes)  I have at least one tattoo i have at least one piercing I have blonde hair i have brown eyes i have short hair my abs are at least somewhat defined (ha ha i wish) i have or have had braces

Prace na jatkach

Ve ctvrtek jsem dal na jatkach vypoved a hned v patek zacal cesat kiwi. Nakonec jsem na jatkach vydrzel mnohem dele nez jsem cekal a planoval a ted je asi dobra doba priblizit co vsechno ta prace obnasela. 

Nabor probehl hodne rychle. Ve stredu jsem byl na pohovoru, ve ctvrtek na lekarske prohlidce a v patek uz zaskoleni a prace. Zadny specialni trenink nebyl potreba. Dostal jsem se do oddeleni porazky na nocni smeny, ktere byly od 14.45 do 23.45 coz mi celkem vyhovovalo. 

Cely proces, kde na zacatku byla ziva ovecka a na konci maso pripravene k dalsimu porcovani, byl rozdeleny na hromadu dilcich ukolu, na ktere jsme byli prirazovani a zaskolovani postupne. Hned prvni den jsme dostali nejake primitivni a mene dulezite ukoly at se rozkoukame. A ze to bylo potreba. Nechapal jsem jak to vsechno ostatni stihaji. 

Druhy den jsem byl prirazeny na ‘heads’. Ovci hlavy se vyuzivaji k dalsimu zpracovani, ale bylo potreba evidovat varky pro pripad nejakeho zavadneho kusu. Oznacil jsem tedy varku 30 ovci a jejich hlavy odvezl stranou. Kdyz tela prosla kontrolou a vse bylo OK, mohly se hlavy vyuzit do krmiva pro zvirata. Kdyz byl nejaky problem, musely se vyhodit. Pri tomhle chodicim ukolu jsem zjistil jak je dulezite vybrat si dostatecne velke gumaky :D 

Na ‘hlavach’ jsem se stridal s jednim Argentincem - Gabbym. Kdo nevozil hlavy, tak v jednom useku chytal houpajici se tela, aby se nedotkla tech ostatnich. Bylo to sice lehke, ale desne nudne. 

Vyzkousel jsem i separovani vnitrnosti, ktere bylo asi nejnarocnejsi na rychlost a dostal jsem se i k praci s nozem. To bylo dobre, protoze jsem konecne dostal nejake skoleni jak noze brousit a udrzovat je ostre. 

Nejhorsi bylo asi castecne stahovani kuze tak aby to mohl chytit stroj a praci dokoncit. Gabby z toho dostal zanet slach a me ruce na tom taky nebyly nejlip. Sice jsme se tocili i na jinych ukolech, ktere snad ani nebudu popisova, ale stejne to nestacilo. 

Nakonec jsem se dostal na zacatek procesu, kde bylo potreba ovci omracit elektrikou, podriznout a zavesit za nohy na posuvnik. Krom podrezavani jsme se na tech ukolech pravidelne tocili. Tohle bylo zas nejhorsi na fyzicku, ale i na to se dalo zvyknout a po par dnech uz to bylo OK. Nejhorsi bylo, ze hrozilo posmrtne kopnuti od ovce a ten kdo vesel predni nohy tak byl cely od krve.

Ke konci jsem se podival i na jine oddeleni, kdyz nebylo moc prace na jatkach tak jsem byl v balirne masa. Tam vladla uplne jina atmosfera, ale byla tam pekna zima :D
