i miss 90s comics when not many people knew oracle existed so people would talk to her and everyone else would go "why are they always talking to themself"

like honestly i do love dinah in grell's ga and i do think that it's an extremely important comic to read if you want to understand dinah as a character but that does not mean that it is perfect.
im in this weird in between space where i really hate the way some bop dinah fans talk abt dinah in ga comics like theyre awful and horrible and have never done anything good for dinah but i also don't love how some people act like grell's writing of dinah is perfect and has absolutely no problems. because like yes grell did a lot of good for dinah and his characterization of her is very good and it allows her to be complex and flawed in a way that a lot of comics don't. but also i can count the number of times we see dinah as black canary on one hand and i am. not a fan of that! i don't expect for dinah to be a part of every issue in a green arrow solo because it is not her solo but i find it Weird that we barely ever get to see her team up with ollie in costume

Ga88 Ollie has all the makings of a deadbeat. Let's talk about it

connor hawke is my sweet baby boy but oliver queen was a more interesting character in ga88. oliver had this huuuuge well of rage and was driven forward by his own demons and the pursuit of justice. oliver's a good person but not a nice or kind one, if that makes sense. plus he's out of his mind through the whole run. connor is being driven forward by his own goodness. he's just like nice and sweet and cares a lot. i think the former is more interesting. that being said, i'll reread connor's g.a 88 run before i'll reread oliver's because connor is a pleasure to read. he activates my grandmother tendencies to protect and cherish

JAYKLYE MY DEAR FRIENDS JAYKYLE i love them i think theyre so fun and silly <3 i think they should meet up again and get into a million arguments and then fight and then make out about it. sick and twisted that dc paired them up during countdown then they never interacted again i am mourning the possibilities </3
donnakory:
Tumblr media
DOUBLE BINGO !!! THEY R LITERALY EVERYTHING 2 MEEEEE. they were roomates. they were best friends. kory was her maid of honour. let’s revisit the panel where donna was like « i guess i can only be defeated by people i love » the only good thing that dc has done with current titans storylines is let them be dykey best friends again. lesbianism wins happy pride !
connorkyle:
Tumblr media
omg connorkyle <3 i really do love them but its been so long since i read gl90 and i still have not finished my ga88 reread so i do not have full context for them BUT i really enjoy them based on my kyle reading!! i love that they're both in similar places re: filling very big shoes and trying to gain their footing in the hero world and i love love love their little road trip to try and find kyle's dad theyre so fun !!!
dickroy:
Tumblr media
MY BUTCH4BUTCH QUEENS !!! i will say. they r not like catnip to me in the same way that i know they are for so many other dick grayson enjoyers on this site BUT i still thoroughly enjoy them do not get it twisted. judd winick went crazy in outsiders 03 i am constantly grateful that he did 🙏
donnakyle:
Tumblr media
DONNAKYLE BINGO they r kind of my brand on a certain level i think. i love them so bad i cant even explain it. i love the way that they meet each other at exactly the necessary time for each other to grow and develop into better people but more importantly they are so FUN to read and genuinely a huge part of why i stuck out the last bits of titans88 :-) i have like 14 rambly posts about them in my drafts that will eventually see the light of day but i will end on the fact that i am hitting them with my lesbian beam and no one can stop me <3

i do think ga88 oliver ‘i team up with anarky to blow shit up & sometimes torture my best & only friend for information’ queen and john ‘i think being tortured by demons is equivalent to watching tories win elections for eight hours and chas is the only person i can reliably call even tho he’s scared of me’ constantine could be great friends. would it be a friendship that ends in lots and lots of literal scorched earth & blood spilled? almost certainly. is that a reason to stop it? nawwww

op! i think you would be much happier reading a couple of other superheroes !
first off, i think you'd really like Flash comics. while you do still get the aspect of kids fighting crime, if you choose to read mark waid's run, for exemple, you get basically none of that, focusing instead of wally and his late 20s issues instead. you get a superhero who not only treats his villains decently but not only that, he's friends or has a sort of alliance with some of them (see: hartley rathaway being his best friend in spite of starting out as a villain, the Rogues having a general agreement with him so that they might continue robbing banks and doing as little civilian damage as possible (see: the Rogues killing one of their own for killing a flashfam member and formally apologizing to wally for it). though i will say, there are a couple of times where the flashfam is absolutely brutal, it legit only happens when one of them is threatened or seriously harmed or killed by villains, not at the willy nilly
i also think you might like Arrow comics ! you do always keep the kids in crime, that's kind of a hallmark in comics, but if you want to ignore that, feel free to read GA88 (though be prepared from some era typical mysoginistic storylines) (it is one of my favorite comic runs, it just suffers from "written by a man in the 80s" syndrom). my rec is GA03 which, in spite of being a little bit ridiculous at times, is still a really fun read. be warned though that GA comics usually tackle some darker subjects than Flash does, though it's not with the same grittiness as Batman comics do
or, if you like some of the characters from batman, though obvi not bruce wayne: read teen titans for dick grayson, young justice for tim drake, batgirl 2000 is an EXCELLENT run and i cannot recommend it enough, the first 24 issues of Red Hood and the Outlaws 2016 for Jason (keep going at your own discretion)
those are my recs for "not batman comics but might fit your bill pretty well" :D
Like, I know I say I hate Batman. But...if we could fundamentally change things core to the character, I'd like him more. Some changes we need: we gotta ditch the darkness (I am not putting up with dark and edgy stuff. I need my fiction fun and light, or there's a good chance I'll hate them). We also definitely have to do something about the whole preteen sidekicks fighting men with guns and knives thing (I love the robins, but if dick grayson was 8 and Jason Todd dies at like, idk, 14, that's disgusting). Also, if we keep Batman's villians the same, we need to make batman treat them more humanely. No more arkham, no more beating them black and blue, none of that. It's awful to see people who have mental health issues get no aid besides beatings.
I'm quickly realizing that I have so many problems with batman that I seem to just want to fix everything by creating a new character with a new personality and background, albeit the same name and secret identity. But yeah. To make batman work, you gotta make some heavy adjustments. In my personal opinion, at least.

The Things We Do for Love
After several months living the so-called (long distance) married life, this week is one of those moments that we (me and Ajeng) have been longing for. By the time this piece is posted, Ajeng was already on board the GA88 flight, bound for Amsterdam. She is coming to live with me in the Netherlands.
In Indonesian culture, the common understanding of marriage is that when a woman marry a man, the man is now responsible for the woman. The responsibility towards the woman is transferred from the her father--Bapak, to me, her partner, her husband. It got me thinking of that moment 4 months ago: how me and Bapak grab each other’s hand, saying my sincere vow of me marrying Ajeng. Bapak’s voice was really shaky at that time. He was about to burst out. He was about to cry. I can really understand that. Imagine, having raising a little girl from being a baby, to becoming a toddler, to becoming a full-grown woman, with everything you got in life: and then comes this somebody --maybe you can even call a stranger so to say-- taking the responsibility of your dearest daughter. Marriage happens everyday, but if you really think about it, it’s more than just an everyday thing. It’s sacred.
I’ve been longing to this moment since weeks ago. I am really really excited that Ajeng is coming to the Netherlands to live with me. But yet when I woke up yesterday, the day of Ajeng’s departure, there is this bittersweet feeling. I kept thinking about that moment 4 months ago, the moment when Bapak and Ibuk ‘had to let their daughter go’.. And while that does not seem enough, they had to let her daughter depart for a place 12000 km away. It’s tough for parents to experience that. In a way, I felt.. Weird.. And guilty. Will Ajeng be happy here? Will I be able to provide for her? Would I be able to really become a responsible husband?
But as the day went, and Ajeng finally get on her plane, this is what I realize:
Bapak and Ibuk, I share your sorrow. It must be difficult to have someone you raised from the beginning of her life depart to live with someone else.. Depart for a country thousands of kilometers away. I still clearly remember the feeling when I had to leave Indonesia 3 years ago. Me myself, I hugged my parents for I don’t know how long in front of that gate in the airport. I felt like I don’t want to let that hug loose. Even after I arrive in the Netherlands, with all of its joy, I still cried sometimes. The feeling of having to live spatially separated from your loved ones is not pleasant. Ask my mom and dad. They know that feeling well.
However, please know, Bapak, Ibu and also Mama, Papa: I am not trying to snatch your daughter away. This whole thing.. This is the thing that we do for love. Me and Ajeng, we love each other, therefore we will both follow our significant other wherever he/she wishes to go. If in the future Ajeng needs to settle in other place, I would do the same. I would follow her wherever she goes. Like what she does to me right now. For now, that place is a country called the Netherlands. We don’t know what awaits us in the future.. But certainly: we love each other. That is why we do this. I will be a responsible husband. Me, together with Ajeng, we will build a happy family. Because we love each other.
We also love you all. We will do countless minutes of video calls. We will share thousands of photos of us doing silly things. We will visit you often. You all will come to the Netherlands to visit us often too, together with Mayang and Gendis. And all of the family members. And of course, one day, we will settle back home.
For now, we are truly starting a new chapter in our life.
Together.

to put it into perspective, the only comics i confidently call myself a fan of is green arrow (and even that i hesitate because i haven’t read all of ga88 or the longbow hunters at all) or maybe yj (partly because it’s a group and half of them basically disappeared after the book was over, making it easy to read all of their appearances). i call myself a kon fan sparingly, even though i read his entire solo. i don’t think i’ve ever called myself a bart fan, even though i read all of impulse. i call myself fans of characters i know i can defend, i know i know thoroughly. for the bats i can’t say that, because i have read more green lantern comics than i have batman comics. and i can’t call myself a green lantern fan, partly for fear of being burnt at the stake and partly because it simply isn’t true. i like the bats just fine, but to call myself a fan of them anything but flippantly implies a deeper knowledge of them than i have. call it impostor syndrome, but that is what baffles me about a lot of fanon fans. isn’t it weird to claim to be a fan of something you don’t know? or like?

Our Europe Trip: The Hustle and Bustle
As you read the title, I will bring you to my — our trip to some countries in Europe. We will walk down my memory lane; from my point of view and my corner or feeling.
Tumblr media
Photo doodled by @ruthambunan
On this date, two years ago, we were off to our first trip together. 22:45 WIB; CGK-AMS; GA88; PK-GID
-
It was October 2017, we were in our friend’s car (we called him NOS) around south perimeter, and out of the blue that idea just came out,
“Europe yuk!”
The others were response excitedly, while I was only response casually since I had another plan next year. We can have plan, but in the end Allah will decide. And Allah is the best planner. In short, the idea of Europe trip was finally answered.
“Yuk!”
The first thing we decided was our departure. After lots of consideration and others, we will go on April. We started to find flight schedule that fits with our plan. One of the perks of working in subsidiary of Garuda Indonesia Airlines is we get one free ticket every year. So, we just issued it to our human resources department.
After the ticket has been issued, we made an itinerary for around ten days; which countries, what places, where to stay, how to get one place to another. We decided that France, Germany, Austria, and Netherlands will be the countries to explore while in Europe. In the beginning, we agreed to keep our budget as low as we can do. We chose Flixbus for our inter country transportation with great deal. It only cost EUR 99.00 for 5 times trip. Lucky us! Finding places to stay was challanging. I will give the detail in the other writing.
Next, we had to prepare the documents to apply visa Schengen Netherlands. The required documents are copy of passport, flight ticket for round trip, boooked hotel while in Europe, itinerary, photo, travel insurance. We got the visas 10 days before our departure, with a little help from our colleague. I know we’ve been too tight to our schedule, but it smooth in the end.
The D-day. I was excited and anxious at the same time. We were arrived at the airport around half to nine in the evening, put our luggage, and waiting to be called to boarding room. We passed the security checking and headed to our plane at half past ten.
“Fourteen hours of flying, wow”
