G20: Lula smiles with all leaders except Milei
Tumblr media
The meeting at the G20 Leaders Summit on Monday was not the first time President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Argentine President Javier Milei faced each other at an event. However, as Lula greeted heads of state arriving at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio's South Zone, anticipation grew for what would become the first photo between the two since the Argentine took office at Casa Rosada last December. When the moment came, the contrast was stark. While all other leaders were met with a smile, Milei's reception conveyed the coldness and distance that have defined relations between the countries over the past year.

One dead after two explosions near Brazil’s Supreme Court
A man detonated a bomb outside Brazil’s Supreme Court on Wednesday after trying to enter the building, heightening security concerns before the country hosts world leaders from the Group of 20 major economies.
The two bombings in the Brazilian capital outside the Supreme Court and Chamber of Deputies were carried out by one man – 59-year-old Francisco Vanderley Luis, once a candidate for Santa Catarina municipality for the Liberal Party. He ran in 2020 but didn’t get enough votes and now he arrived in the centre of Brasilia to take out politicians he didn’t like.
Immediately after setting fire to a car in a car park near the Supreme Court, he threw explosives at the building and blew himself up at the entrance, according to a story in the Metropoles portal. The booby-trapped car also belonged to Luis. It is noteworthy that the suicide bomber warned of his intentions – relevant records appeared in his social networks under the nickname Tiu França. He wrote:
Shall we play? Federal Police, you have 72 hours to defuse the bomb in the house of the communists: William Bonner, Jose Sarney, Geraldo Alckmin, Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
In one post, Luis promised that his “game” would end on November 16. It is not known if he had accomplices and whether the death of the perpetrator would disrupt his plans. Francisco’s body was completely disfigured by the fire, the blast wave threw the man several metres away, where he remained lying on the pavement.
Two explosions with a difference of 20 seconds the day before took place in different points of the square Praça dos Tres Poderes, which in addition to the court is adjacent to the working residence of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The press noted that at the time, parliament was considering an amendment expanding tax breaks for the church. The staff of the Supreme Court was evacuated, emergency services arrived on the scene. Eyewitness footage began to appear on social media. The police initiated an investigation and involved other agencies.

Since you have Nyo OCs, would it be alright to ask what are your thoughts and feelings on Nyotalia overall?
I have mixed feelings Nyotalia; on other hand, I kinda like how they're different from their original counterparts. I appreciate that they have their own identity, not just straight up "X as a man/woman." On other hand, it feels like they were created solely for fanservice and nothing more.
Imo I feel it can be used to explore character concepts that weren't explored in the original, or even different facets of the country they're representing (ex: I like the idea of Amy representing the "strength" of the US while Alfred represents diplomacy. Its true that those sides can overlap, but one suits the other side better) I kinda try to keep that in mind making my own nyos, (Normal Brazil represents our vibrant, energetic side, while Nyo!Brazil represents our "chill" side, how we don't want beef with anyone) It can be a good way to use traits that weren't picked up in the creation of the original character.

Brazil arrests G20 guards over alleged 2022 Lula assassination plot
Tumblr media
Brazilian police on Tuesday arrested four soldiers guarding the G20 summit over an alleged plot to assassinate then President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a 2022 "coup," a federal police source told AFP.
The four "were arrested in Rio, where they were participating in the security operation for the G20 leaders' meeting," said the source, who added that a police officer was also taken into custody.
A statement by Brazil's federal police said the suspects were "mostly soldiers with special forces training," but made no mention of them being part of the G20 summit security deployment.
They were arrested on the second day of the G20 gathering, in an operation to "dismantle a criminal organization responsible for planning a coup d'etat to prevent the government legitimately elected in 2022 elections taking office," the police said.

G20 agrees to work on Brazil’s “billionaire tax” idea
The world’s 20 largest economies agreed to work together to ensure effective taxation of the super-rich in a declaration, according to Euractiv.
The declaration, which would be published on Friday, 26 July, was a priority for Brazil chairing this year’s G20 negotiations. Its leader Luiz Inácio Lula, a former factory worker, pushed for the inclusion of a “billionaire tax” on the G20 agenda.
“With full respect to tax sovereignty, we will seek to engage cooperatively to ensure that ultra-high-net-worth individuals are effectively taxed. Co-operation could involve exchanging best practices, encouraging debates around tax principles, and devising anti-avoidance mechanisms, including addressing potentially harmful tax practices.”
Brazil launched discussions on a proposal to levy a 2% wealth tax on fortunes over $1bn. The move would raise up to $250bn a year from 3,000 people, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad reported.
What started today is a broader process that will require the participation of academia, scholars, and international organisations with experience and time, such as the OECD and the UN.
Although others in the G20 supported the agreement, they noted how difficult it would be to implement. European Economic Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni stated on the sidelines of the G20 meeting:
“We all know that we are starting a process which is very, very challenging. The first step will be to work on exchange of information among different countries. It will be something to discuss in the coming months and years.”
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, however, expressed cautiousness about the new global tax policy, noting that US President Joe Biden had proposed several policies to that end, including a “billionaire tax.”
We think … it makes sense for most countries to take this approach of progressive taxation. And we are happy to work with Brazil on that and propagate these ideas in the G20. But tax policy is very difficult to coordinate globally and we don’t see a need or really think it is desirable to try to negotiate a global agreement on that. We think that all countries should make sure that their taxation systems are fair and progressive.
The “billionaire tax” will target the world’s richest people, such as Tesla and Space X owner Elon Musk, whose fortune Forbes estimates at around $235 billion, Amazon owner Jeff Bezos with a fortune of around $200 billion, or French luxury goods tycoon Bernard Arnault with a fortune of around $180 billion.
Over the past decade, the richest 1% accumulated $42 trillion in new wealth, almost 34 times more than the entire 50% of the world’s poorest people, according to Oxfam. That has only exacerbated wealth inequality.

This is a very long article which I have not read in its extent. Ensuring that we fulfil our responsibilities towards the people is a fairly straightforward matter, so my conclusion is that some of our representatives are very good at complicated issues but absolute rubbish at providing simple ones.
I think it's a positive step to tax the super wealthy for their contribution towards the infrastructure which they and their companies make use of but which the people on minimum wage, actually pay for.
I would like to revisit history a little bit for your education. In the Industrial Revolution, Big Business built housing for their workers and provided access to medical services for their employees and their families. That way, they provided various services which were of benefit to their business, at a relatively low cost and ensured adequate living conditions for their employees. In the Digital Revolution, many work full time on minimum wage but are increasingly, forced to live on the streets because they have been priced out of having an adequate roof over their heads, sanitation, privacy or dignity, which is another word for "majesty", and should you care at all, "imperial" is another word for "justice", both conspicuous by their absence.
Since the issue was brought up at my insistence, I am very, very, very anxious for the matter to be expedited and put into operation with the attention and care that it merits. Also, should anybody care, failing to provide hospitality for the weary is a Mortal Sin. A random couple called Joseph and Mary arrived at the Inn and were told that there were no rooms left but were directed to the stable where History unfolded, so I don't want to hear the words "sei lá pá". How hard can it be to have a big hall with beds and a soup kitchen with adequate sanitation and a few creature comforts, until something more adequate can be arranged. What's stopping you from doing it today?
Louis de Bragança July 25 2024
