G20: Lula smiles with all leaders except Milei
The meeting at the G20 Leaders Summit on Monday was not the first time President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Argentine President Javier Milei faced each other at an event. However, as Lula greeted heads of state arriving at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio's South Zone, anticipation grew for what would become the first photo between the two since the Argentine took office at Casa Rosada last December. When the moment came, the contrast was stark. While all other leaders were met with a smile, Milei's reception conveyed the coldness and distance that have defined relations between the countries over the past year.

One dead after two explosions near Brazil’s Supreme Court
A man detonated a bomb outside Brazil’s Supreme Court on Wednesday after trying to enter the building, heightening security concerns before the country hosts world leaders from the Group of 20 major economies.
The two bombings in the Brazilian capital outside the Supreme Court and Chamber of Deputies were carried out by one man – 59-year-old Francisco Vanderley Luis, once a candidate for Santa Catarina municipality for the Liberal Party. He ran in 2020 but didn’t get enough votes and now he arrived in the centre of Brasilia to take out politicians he didn’t like.
Immediately after setting fire to a car in a car park near the Supreme Court, he threw explosives at the building and blew himself up at the entrance, according to a story in the Metropoles portal. The booby-trapped car also belonged to Luis. It is noteworthy that the suicide bomber warned of his intentions – relevant records appeared in his social networks under the nickname Tiu França. He wrote:
Shall we play? Federal Police, you have 72 hours to defuse the bomb in the house of the communists: William Bonner, Jose Sarney, Geraldo Alckmin, Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
In one post, Luis promised that his “game” would end on November 16. It is not known if he had accomplices and whether the death of the perpetrator would disrupt his plans. Francisco’s body was completely disfigured by the fire, the blast wave threw the man several metres away, where he remained lying on the pavement.
Two explosions with a difference of 20 seconds the day before took place in different points of the square Praça dos Tres Poderes, which in addition to the court is adjacent to the working residence of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The press noted that at the time, parliament was considering an amendment expanding tax breaks for the church. The staff of the Supreme Court was evacuated, emergency services arrived on the scene. Eyewitness footage began to appear on social media. The police initiated an investigation and involved other agencies.

Since you have Nyo OCs, would it be alright to ask what are your thoughts and feelings on Nyotalia overall?
I have mixed feelings Nyotalia; on other hand, I kinda like how they're different from their original counterparts. I appreciate that they have their own identity, not just straight up "X as a man/woman." On other hand, it feels like they were created solely for fanservice and nothing more.
Imo I feel it can be used to explore character concepts that weren't explored in the original, or even different facets of the country they're representing (ex: I like the idea of Amy representing the "strength" of the US while Alfred represents diplomacy. Its true that those sides can overlap, but one suits the other side better) I kinda try to keep that in mind making my own nyos, (Normal Brazil represents our vibrant, energetic side, while Nyo!Brazil represents our "chill" side, how we don't want beef with anyone) It can be a good way to use traits that weren't picked up in the creation of the original character.
#crepe talks#crepe answers#not related but im forever salty that portugal and ireland turned over to be men#i'm glad that port exists. its nice to a lusophone country since we dont get enough representation. but.#idk proto-portugal had way more soul on it. loved her#pirate tomboy <3#also it would have been nice to see a girlboss in the middle of the seafaring sausage party#or a girlboss in a sausage party in general#same with ireland#hima its name literally means “eire's land” the fuck man#anyway i know this is probably a pipe's dream because hima is kinda misogynistic and the chances of this happening are really low but#i kinda wish some of the g20 countries that didnt got designs like brazil or/and mexico were women#listen i love guy brazil as the next person but i feel brazil being a woman would be way more interesting.#esp of how huge we were in the past#but also girlbosses are fun#anyway rant's over. probably typed more here than in the post itself lmao

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva opened a G20 summit in Rio by launching an alliance to curb world hunger, which he called a "scourge that shames humanity." "This alliance was born of the G20, but it is global. Let this summit be marked by the courage to act," Lula told leaders of the biggest economies. The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty marks an early summit success for left-wing Lula, with a total of 81 countries signing on to it. Argentina was the only one of the 19 countries in the G20 to initially hold off signing on to the initiative. But it eventually came around after negotiations, a Brazilian government source said. The charity Oxfam said the global alliance "could be a turning point in the battle against hunger and extreme poverty" but urged the initiative to go further by instituting changes in agriculture, supporting land rights and confronting "the weaponization of hunger." The Vatican's envoy to the summit, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, read a message from Pope Francis saying he hoped the new alliance would "have a significant impact on global efforts to combat hunger and poverty." Francis added that the Vatican had long called for "funds currently allocated to weapons and other military expenditures" to be redirected to a global fund to combat hunger.

Brazil arrests G20 guards over alleged 2022 Lula assassination plot
Brazilian police on Tuesday arrested four soldiers guarding the G20 summit over an alleged plot to assassinate then President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a 2022 "coup," a federal police source told AFP.
The four "were arrested in Rio, where they were participating in the security operation for the G20 leaders' meeting," said the source, who added that a police officer was also taken into custody.
A statement by Brazil's federal police said the suspects were "mostly soldiers with special forces training," but made no mention of them being part of the G20 summit security deployment.
They were arrested on the second day of the G20 gathering, in an operation to "dismantle a criminal organization responsible for planning a coup d'etat to prevent the government legitimately elected in 2022 elections taking office," the police said.

Brazil's first lady insults Elon Musk at G20 social event
By Reuters
November 17, 20242:47 AM AST
Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and first Lady Rosangela "Janja" da Silva attend the closing ceremony of the G20 Social summit, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, November 16, 2024
RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Brazil's first lady, Janja Lula da Silva, swore at billionaire Elon Musk during a G20 social event on Saturday at which she spoke about the need to regulate social media to rein in misinformation.
A ship's horn sounded as she spoke and she joked, "I think it's Elon Musk," before adding, "I'm not afraid of you, fuck you, Elon Musk."
Musk, owner of social network X, reacted to a video of her remarks by posting a laughing out loud emoji graphic. In another post, he added, "They are going to lose the next election," in a reference to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The president's wife spoke at an event ahead of the Rio de Janeiro summit of the G20 group of largest nations set for Monday and Tuesday.
Musk's social messaging network was suspended in Brazil for a month this year for failing to name a legal representative in the country and ignoring court orders to block accounts accused of spreading "fake news" and hate messages.
