g1 s2e36 triple takeover is insane. megatron and starscream taken out by the dumbest plan on earth. blitzwing gets really into football and does some minotaur shit to the autobots. scrapper sits on prowl like a throne. astrotrain talks to regular ass trains like theyre sapient. blitzwing kisses scrapper. optimus making fun of megatron and starscream to their faces and not even fighting them. trailbreaker’s gay pride beam. everyones playing in the water.
also like… the way the triple changers try and assume command just when megatron and starscream are out for the count. as if soundwave’s not back at base w rumble pointing at laserbeak’s livestream of it all going “do you see this shit boss”
#this whole sequence of episodes is so…..#like.#ep 32: women terrorize shockwave#ep 33: tracks and blaster go to the club#ep 34: optimus starts killing#ep 35: robotfucker supreme astoria shows up#ep 36: this#g1 is soooo stupid (said gleefully and with affection)#t#tf

Around March I got the urge to watch G1, so I opened Youtube and started the episodes in the order in which they were listed on the official Hasbro channel.
Turns out that is not a good idea.
I figured it out around the middle of season 1 and went searching on the internet to find if someone had any idea why is that.
After a while I found a forum of people talking about how they made their own order of the episodes. After a bit of scrolling I found God.
pitt55 shared his entire reconfiguration of all the 98 episodes on the forum. You'll find his reply if you scroll down just a bit.
I used his guide and didn't have a single problem from then on, and I did make a copy of it and pasted it in my notes for easier access so I'm putting it here for anyone who wants to watch G1 and is/was as confused as me.

Beachcomber!! I've always had an affinity for obscure/overlooked characters and faceless characters, and he fits both boxes. He's also one of the only notable pacifists in Transformers (that I've seen so far; the other is First Aid) and I feel that's not like... a thing that's touched on? The entire Thing of TF is the millions of years long war, but there doesn't seem to be too many stories about vocally anti-war bots. Then again, I haven't seen much beyond G1, TFA, EarthSpark, and Skybound comics.
In the G1 episode "The Golden Lagoon", he comes across a pool of electrum, which turns Cybertronians invulnerable, but he doesn't tell the Autobots about it for fear they'll ruin the natural surroundings. When the Decepticons find it, he has no choice but to lead the Autobots there, and watch as the glade gets destroyed by the crossfire.
Speaking of Skybound, [[SPOILERS]]
Beachcomber is really good in that continuity. On the way to earth, he was thrown off the Ark and landed on the moon, where he stayed for millions of years until he hitched a ride to earth on the Apollo lander.
He came across the Ark and all the deactivated cybertronians, but didn't reactivate them because he knew it would restart the war and ruin earth.
Looking at this again, actually... this implies he wasn't thinking of reactivating everyone (which would have been a terrible idea, as we've seen), he was just considering waking the Autobots.
IDK I just think he's neat.
tell me about your favourite transformer, and maybe why you like them so much? or what's your favourite continuity?
#Also I forgot he sounded like that at the end#Fun fact: he's voiced by the same guy that does warpath

love the Magnus art and the buster response :D very cool! I’ve kinda run out of things to say lol and my weeks been packed. here’s a question: What is a standout G1 Episode or Marvel comics moment for you?
#gl
Thank you!
Also, hi, gl, haven't heard from you a bit, don't worry about running out of things to say, because I always figure out something to yap about.
Anyway this one's a bit long, because I have to tell you about something that happened on Twitter with my response to you and tell you about cartoons and comics
Also I would like to tell you that I posted the strawpage gimmick and response on Twitter and my response got over 5000 likes and your strawpage to me got like over 1000 likes and a fanart, and I wanted to let you know that because it's your art and I'm sorry that it went viral I didn't mean that lol if you want me to shout you out I will, but don't feel pressured to break the anonymity
Okay, so back to the question at hand.
Season 1
Episode 7 "Fire in the Sky"
It is good. Fun Jazz bit at the start. I like Skyfire and I really like Starscream in this one. I like how it shows his ambitiousness and how he sees others but how he puts his ambitions first and how he doesn't hesitate to hurt people he cares about for his goals. I think he's an interesting villain and I like it.
I love Episode 8 too. "S.O.S. Dinobots."
It has everything good in there. Wheeljack ans Ratchet's ingenuity. Autobots learning about Earth things, Spike and Bumblebee once again, getting in situations they shouldn't. The stubborn nature of the Dinobots. And of course my favorite bit
"Inhibitor shells... my equilibrium... destabilized... OUGHHHHH!"
"Megatron has FALLEN! I Starscream am now your leader! Decepticons, follow me!"
Season 2
Episode 4 "Attack of the Autobots"
I just like it. I like how all the Autobots care for eachother and are careful not to hurt eachother and I love the Bumblebee and Prime moment at the end. And I love Ratchet and Sparkplug in it too
Episode 16 "The Master Builders"
Optimus playing Basketball. Also Hoist and Grapple are great. I love Grapple. He's so real.
Episode 27 "Make Tracks"
I love Tracks. Him and Raoul play off of eachother so nicely. It's so fun.
Season 2 Episode 30 "The Secret of Omega Supreme"
I love Omega in this and it's a touching episode and I love how Optimus is so compassionate towards him
Episode 34 "Triple Takeover"
So fun! Love Astrotrain and Blitzwing
"Coach! It's a tank! What do I do?"
"Give him the ball!"
Episode 37 "The Search for Alpha Trion"
Establishes a lot. Introduces the Female Autobots. I love them. Elita is such a good leader and I love that it's implied that they managed to survive 4 million years even with so many bots away.
I LOVE THE MOVIE, but the question isn't asking about the movie, is it?
Season 3
Episode 4 "Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4"
Rodimus is... so depressed, so done with everything. The bit where he short circuits himself. Get therapy man. Also love the lore drop. I think it's very interesting. I think the Quintessons are interesting.
The next episode, the fifth part of the Five Faces of Darkness Quintology has a quote I like from Rodimus:
"We Transformers have looked into the face of our creators... and seen the face of an enemy."
It's just cool. I could talk about it more but I already talked so much and I haven't got to comics.
Episode 8 "Dark Awakening"
Just messed up. And Rodimus was so willing to give up the Matrix and just... Ough
Episode 28 "The Burden Hardest to Bear"
Rodimus just struggled the entire season didn't he? God. At least Kup's trying to help
Okay, comics now
US Issue 5/UK Issues 22-23 "The New Order"
You know, the one where Shockwave shows up and everyone is dead? That was so cool. A really strong start to the comics. I feel like it really sets it apart from the cartoon.
US Issue 7/UK Issue 26 "Warrior School"
Ratchet and Buster save the day! God I love Ratchet in this, I love him, I'm so normal about him.
UK Issues 42-44 "Crisis of Command"
US Issue 8/UK Issues 27-28 "Repeat Performance"
The Dinobots YAYYYYYY! Also Ratchet is GREAT once again!
I love that the trauma of what happened the Optimus with Shockwave stuck to him. I love that he doubts his command so Prowl tries to come up with solutions that make it worse. I love Bumblebee's self esteem issues. I love it.
US Issue 16/UK Issues 57-58 "Plight of the Bumblebee"
Bumblebee can't catch a break ever.
US Issue 17/ UK Issues 66-67 "The Smelting Pool"
Blaster and Scrounge my beloved...
UK Issues 96-97 "Prey"
Optimus is worried that the Autobots wouldn't make it without him. His solution is stupid.
US Issue 24/UK Issues 105-106 "Afterdeath"
This shook me so much that I had to talk to my mom about it
US Issue 26/UK Issues 109-110 "Funeral for a Friend"
Ratchet, it wasn't your fault you have to listen to me.
UK Issue 132 "Kup's Story"
KUP!
UK Transformers Annual 1987 "Vicious Circle"
I really love how in the comics, the things that happen to the characters stick with them and it can take multiple issues to resolve/never resolve
UK Issues 160-161 "Salvage"
Ultra Magnus and Megatron VS PTSD very cool
UK Issues 166-167 "Legion of the Lost"
This story arc is really cool and interesting and I like the amount of robot body horror in this series. Springer...
UK Issues 168-169 "Meltdown"
Impactor... It's just cool. Read it.
UK Issues 199-205 "Time Wars"
Iconic
US Issue 60/UK Issues 252-254 "Yesterday's Heroes"
Hot Rod is so stupid that Optimus's grief-driven suicide is postponed
US Issue 61/UK Issues 259-261 "The Primal Scream"
What if god was under your feet the whole time? What if while all this death and destruction was happening to you for millions of years, he was there the whole time and he just slept. What if you died twice and you found god and he was asleep and uncaring? Anyway, Bumblebee yells at god.
US Issue 70/UK Issues 309-310 "The Pri¢e of Life!"
OUGH OUGH OUGH OW OW OUGH OW
Anyway sorry that my words on them vary, but those are my favorites overall and I can talk more in depth out of all of them, sorry it took so long
Also these are just some of the ones that stand out to me! There are a lot of good moments that I missed!

City of Steel
Old man yells at ceiling?
Time for more water skiing cars!
Time for renovation, Cybertronian style.
“And one moooore thing!”
Ironhide fall down.
“What the-”
“AHHHHH!”
UM!?!
Welp, time to dismember Optimus Prime with a light saber!
“Alas, poor Optimus!”
Spike? Spike? Does that hurt your keister? Because it looks like Bee’s horns are poking you in some not very comfy places.
Oh look, an alligator. An alligator with a familiar color scheme...
(He had places to be.)
He’s just holding his friend’s decapitated head, nothing to see here.
(God, Optimus’ legs are big.)
Why are there leftover red and blue parts!?!
Okay, well still missing an arm-
Why... why was this were they decided to put his arm?
“Press the button, Soundwave!”
“OH MY GOD!!!”
One moment it’s Rumble-
-and the next he’s suddenly Frenzy.
Either way, he explodes.
“We seem to have an infestation, sir.”
Sweet bot on jet love?
“Look! Poorly drawn intruders!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about! My face always looks like this.”
And now, King Kong, staring Devastator and Optimus Prime.
And while squeaking horribly, Optimus declares himself back to normal.

i've begun to legitimately hate armada starscream. all xer fans act like transformers armada is irredeemable shit and that xe's the only thing in it that matters. at least with someone who likes starscream from animated, g1, bayverse, whatever can at least name one other thing they like about the show, but with transformers armada it's just "LOL THIS SHOW SUX AND STARSCREAM'S THE ONLY GOOD PART"
god maybe it’s my unconditional love for transformers armada that makes me a lot more irritated about it’s reception, but it’s just like. so tiring. transformers armada is definitely flawed, unicron trilogy installments usually are, but how people act like starscream was the only good thing about it are so lame. i love my hypermasc bifauxnen sword fighter as well but come ooooon.
even more exhausting when it’s obvious they never actually watched the show. “unlike other starscreams he was loyal to the end and a good fighter from the get-go!” like… no? she made it very apparent that she believed megatron was still a fool, wanted to take over the decepticons ‘till episode 34, and her whole arc is about maturing and becoming a better person. transformers armada character arcs were about these guys becoming better people.
transformers armada has major flaws, but to act like starscream was the only redeemable part when she just isn’t is so tired. bring back armada cyclonus. bring back armada demolisher. please bring back those iterations of thrust and sideways i love those guys so much i miss shitty men.

G1 Climax 31 Night 9 - 10/3/2021; NJPW Strong Episode 60 - 10/2/2021
The tour resumed today, with A Block matches, live on NJPWWorld.
- 10/3/2021, Aichi Dolphin’s Arena
Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] d. Kosei Fujita (Boston Crab, 7:34)
Toru Yano [CHAOS] d. BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] (Schoolboy, 7:14)
G1 Climax 31 A Block: KENTA [Bullet Club] d. Great O-Khan [United Empire] (Schoolboy, 19:30)
G1 Climax 31 A Block: Tanga Loa [Bullet Club] d. Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club] (Apeshit, 12:36)
G1 Climax 31 A Block: Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS] d. Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] (Vertical Drop Brainbuster, 18:40)
G1 Climax 31 A Block: Kota Ibushi d. Shingo Takagi [Los Ingobernables] (Kamigoye, 23:57)
Ibushi gets the win over Shingo, the delayed match finally happening, although not for the IWGP World title. Ibushi said next time they met, he would take the belt from Shingo. That will likely happen before WK16, unless Ibushi were to become a 3-in-a-row winner.
Sabre takes his first loss in the tournament, whilst Tanga Loa gets his first in-ring win (his previous 2pts coming from Tetsuya Naito’s withdrawal). Before the match, KENTA challenged O-Khan that the winner had to bow before the other. O-Khan agreed, and looked to bow before KENTA post-match, before popping up and hitting Eliminator on him, so O-Khan retains his heat. This is the second time on this tour that we’ve had two consecutive Schoolboy finishes; someone seems to be a fan of them behind the scenes.
Current A Block standings, which are getting pretty tight:
Sabre - 8pts (4W 0D 1L) Ibushi - 8pts (4W 0D 2L) KENTA - 8pts (4W 0D 2L) O-Khan - 8pts (4W 0D 2L) Shingo - 6pts (3W 0D 2L) Ishii - 6pts (3W 0D 3L) Yano - 6pts (3W 0D 2L) Loa - 4pts (2W 0D 3L) Yujiro - 4pts (2W 0D 3L) Naito - 0pts (0W 0D 9L)
Last night’s episode of NJPW Strong was the final one coming from the Fighting Spirit Unleashed tapings in August from Long Beach, CA.
JR Kratos [Team Filthy] d. Fred Yehi (Game Changer, 9:13)
Chris Dickinson [ROH] d. Royce Isaacs [Team Filthy] (STF, 11:08)
NJPW Strong Openweight Championship: “Filthy” Tom Lawlor [Team Filthy] (c) d. Lio Rush [FREE] (Rear Naked Choke, 16:19) - Lawlor succeeds his 4th defense
Lawlor retains the Strong Openweight title against the now-signed-to-AEW Lio Rush, and afterwards got a challenge from Ren Narita. Lawlor buried Narita, telling him to get more training from Shibata first, before Narita delivered a very Shibata-like kick in the face to Lawlor. That match happened last weekend during Autumn Attack, so that will be shown on an upcoming episode. Chris Dickinson gets a measure of revenge against Team Filthy.
Next week’s episode begins the Autumn Attack taping session.
Tomorrow’s show continues B Block matches.
- 10/4/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall

How would you rate the transformers series? Like animated? As in G1, Prime, uh, Beastwars, etc? What would you rate it? From 1 to 10 recommended? Cuz I'm trying to go from start to finish but you make me really wanna just watch TFA and all that jazz
I’m gonna be real w you,,,I’ve only ever seen Tfa, Tfp , and Cyberverse ALL of which I haven’t even finished
I’ve gotten as far as Episode 34 on tfa and up to mid Season 2 on tfp, cyberverse I’ve only seen maybe three episodes
I can say that ALL of them are freaking phenomenal!!! And if you’re super into animation then you’re rly gonna have the time of your life seeing how different the art styles art!
As for the best version I’ve seen, I think I’m always gonna say tfa is the best continuity out there because of its world building, designs, writing, and over all lightheartedness and DEFINITELY some hidden dark undertones holy fffff
I hope this kind of helps??? I’m not the best person to ask but there’s my opinion :D
#yeah pls just drag me#i know i know#its terrible that i havent seen all of tfa yetBUT#i know what happens in the storyline so its fine :D its fine. yeah#asks#transformers#about me

HAPPY BIRTHDAY G1
youtube
Many millions of years ago, on the planet Cybertron, life existed. But not life as we know it today. Intelligent robots that could think and feel inhabited the cities. They were called Autobots, and Decepticons.
34 years ago today, the very first cartoon episode of Transformers aired: More Than Meets The Eye, Part 1. It featured some concepts we would never see again: most of the Autobots’ Cybertronian alt-modes, Starscream’s bizarrely deep voice, and Soundwave turning into a lamppost. On the other hand, some footage from this episode would be recycled quite a lot.
This was the first time we saw… uhh just about everyone who was in G1. Wheeljack was our first Autobot, and Starscream our first Decepticon. The first human was Joe.
Wheeljack (1)
Bumblebee (2)
Prowl (12)
Optimus Prime (13)
Trailbreaker (14)
Jazz (15)
Ratchet (18)
Ironhide (19)
Sideswipe (20)
Teletraan I (21)
Cliffjumper (24)
Hound (25)
Hauler (26)
Sunstreaker (31)
Bluestreak (32)
Huffer (33)

Shockwave (17)
Reflector (22)
Rumble (23)
Ravage (27)
Joe and his coworker (28)
Spike Witwicky (29)
Sparkplug Witwicky (30)
It also debuted the very first animation error, when stars passed in front of Cybertron in the opening shot.
Who knew this’d go anywhere?

Transformers 84: More Than Meets The Eye Part 1 Recap and Review
1984: A year of progress, a year of Gremlins, Space Whales.. and the dawn of the Transformers. Created by toy giant Hasbro in partnership with Japanese Toymakers Takara from their Diaclone lline, Transformers launched a GIANT franchise, consisting of 20 animated series, 5 live action movies of rapidly decending quality with an unpcoming spinoff that actually looks good, countless comics, and of course, as the world’s longest living toy commercial, a mountain of toys for young and old alike. While I’ve never been the most Diehard transformers fan, I’ve always had a soft spot for it: I watched Beast Wars as a kid, watched Armada as a kid/middleschooler, threw up my hands at Energon and saw the first film in theaters which lead to me watching the glorious cheese that is the original Transformers Movie on youtube, back before Youtube became the copyright hellscape it is now. I also later watched all of transformers animated. And now, as a grown ass man i’ve recently read the IDW comic “More Than Meets The Eye” and with its deep use of just about every G1 Autobot and Decepticon that’s not in use, I want to see where it all began and see all these characters in there, pardon the obvious pun, prime. So join me won’t you as I try to watch and review every episode of G1 transformers.
So for the first of COUNTLESS animated episodes and the second and most notable bit of the franchise how does transformers hold up 34 years later?
Summary:
Starting on Cybertron we get the backstory fairly quickly: For Primus knows how long, two sides have been at war: The peacenik but willing to gut a mother fucker to bring about that peace Autbots and your standard 80’s cackling Saturday morning cartoon villains, the Decepticons. But energy is running low so your hero and mine Optimus Prime decides to take a crew of Autobots to find energy and save their race. The Decepticons, suspicious as you would if your sworn enemies were packing up and leaving, pursue and board them, the insuing battle knocking them into the earth and knocking them all off line for the next 4 million years. During that time their descendants fight over wither the Autobots get to live or not but that’s a whole nother series.
One of the Decepticons awakens due to the Autobot’s ship computer, that also gives him an earth based alt mode, and revives Megatron and the rest with it. Megatron leaves the Autobots behind so we have a series and his right hand man and traitorous bastard Starscream tries to actually make sure their dead. Instead he proves why he’s not leader by accidently waking Optimus up, who brings the rest back to life and sends his top men Hound and Wheeljack to spy on the Decpticons, who are making a base outta nothing at all.
Wheeljack tries to, in a shocking move for an 80’s kids cartoon, SNIPE MEGATRON WITH A GIANT CANON. Granted their robots but jesus, he tried to headshot the bastard. At any rate he fails, hound nearly dies when they runaway, and Megatron’s men go looking for energy and find an oil rig to steal it from.
Hound undergoes repairs while the rest of the transformers roll out to hunt for Megatron. Meanwhile the Decepticons arrive at the Oil Rig and the wokers, collectively winning a Darwin award, try to fight Megatron, a giant murder robot who just showed up out of nowhere with an army equally giant less competent murder robots, BY THROWING WRENCHES AT HIM. Yes that’s a thing that happened. Megatron is merciful and instead of neutron cannoning them to death just throws a giant pipe and bowls them over. The Decepticons convert the oil into the Transformers power source, Energon.
The Autobots arrive, war were declared and a massive and surprisingly decent for the limited animation fight breaks out. But the Decepticons, having what they need, book it and blow up the derrick leaving our heroes and two random humans working it, father and sons Sparkplug and Spike Whitwhicky to die as our episode closes out. TO BE CONTINUED.
Review:
RID Part one is a damn good first episode. Despite the limited characterization outside of the faction leaders, Starscream, Hound and Wheeljack, the action is enjoyably cheesy, the conflict is compelling and most questions a person would have are actually answered. Add in the coolness that is Soundwave, Megatron’s other right hand who launches cassettes that turn into a death bird and a panther, and you have a fun, goofy action show. While I know there’s worse to come, with merman, kidnappings, and krimzeek, for now I’m excited to see more of this cheesy war for the planet earth. Until next time, courage.

I Still Function
So i’ll be 34 this year. I was born in those weird tweeny years between Gen X and the accepted Millennial realization. Technically, i am a Millennial but since i caught the tail end of the 80s, we have our own sub category. I’ve heard the term Xennial or Proto-Millenial thrown around but i always prefers The Oregon Trail Generation, mostly because we all played Oregon Trail in grade school. Motherf*cker stayed dying of dysentery! Essentially, i had my formative years in the 90s but grew up i the 80s. As such, i got to be semi-privy to all of that Reagan nonsense; trickle down decay, bullsh*t Nuclear family ideal, outright war on the minority community, and the rampant corporate greed that he left unchecked. Aside from a stock market crash and wild inflation, we got a deregulation on corporate advertising. In direct response, these morally bankrupt companies flooded the market with commercials masquerading as cartoon series targeting, kids just like me. And boy did that sh*t work!
G.I. Joe, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Jem, Dinosaucers, My Little Pony, Care Bears, ThunderCats, SilverHawks, Go-Bots; i can go on for years, man! The vast majority of 80s cartoons, the entertainment i had as a child, were specifically designed to sell toys. They were cynically created for the sole purpose of profit but transformed into something more. Pun intended. A handful of these cash-grabs became so much more than just toy plugs. He-Man and G.I. Joe are stalwarts in American Pop Culture, just like Barbie, but the biggest star of the 80s toy entertainment revolution, Transformers, has become a goddamn powerhouse!
Transformers, to me, was like the first time older 20-somethings watched Dragon Ball Z or Naruto. It was a goddamn revelation. My pops was a fan od Speed Racer so i had a rudimentary understanding of what anime was. I jumped from there, headfirst into Gundam and Dunbine bootlegs. I eventually found my way to a pure love for the giant robot genre thanks to Macross and Go-Lion (Robotech and Voltron, respectively, for the Americans in the audience). At 4 years old, i remember finding a VHS for the first two episodes on the Transformers show in my local Blockbuster. Suffice it to say, i was immediately hooked. Imagine my surprise when i got older and realized that, everyone of my beloved Transformers, were based on the Japanese Takara toy line, Diaclone. Mostly. There were a few exception; Jetfire was actually that transforming robot jet from Macross, but they were still Japanese properties. My burgeoning weeabooness, thanks to Godzilla and Voltron, ate that sh*t up.
Those first two seasons of Transformers were iconic. They set forth a real, cultural, phenomenon behind dope ass characters, deep lore, and a crazy ass gimmick. Objectively, robots that turned into other things, seems like a no-brainer but no one was doing it. Hasboro had the wherewithal to bring in actual writers, actual creators, to create a world and universe a la Star Wars. Jim Shooter, Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief at the time, roughed an overall concept and Bob Budiansky put the final touches on Shooter’s work. Hasboro loved what they presented and Marvel set off with a four issue mini series comic adaption while Sunbow dropped a three part television pilot. Transformers became an overnight success. Much like all of it’s other cookie-cutter commercial cartoons of it’s day, there was a distinct lack or substance to the original series but no one cared. Most kids were just regaled by the dope ass toys and the wildly unique characters presented.
The War between the Autobots and Decepticons set the tiny imagination of little Ryan ablaze. As an adult, looking back, i can honestly say G1 was trash. It was mad transparent with it’s agenda. But i din’t care because Starscream is dope as sh*t. Screamer was just the best thing for me.He was my Vegeta before Vegeta. I Adored his smarmy cockiness and zealous ambition. It helped tremendously that his particular voice actor, Chris Latta, was one of the best o work. His distinct voice gave a real personality, a true uniqueness, to the Seeker commander. Latta actually voiced a ton of characters i enjoyed as a a kid. Fun fact, he was also the voice of Cobra Commander from G.I. Joe and the original voice to Mr. Burns from the Simpsons. The more you know.
Aside from the legendary Chris Latta, Transformers also employed true legends of the industry in Peter Cullen and Frank Welker in the leader roles of their opposing factions. Optimus Prime IS Peter Cullen. Frank Welker IS Megatron. It doesn’t work when other people voice them in other media. One of the reasons i dislike the Bayformers franchise (more on that later) is because Michael Bay made Frank Welker audition for the role of Megatron. He made Megatron audition for Megatron, and then PASSED on him! He told Megatron he was wasn’t Megatron enough to play Megatron. The f*cking audacity! Hugo Weaving did a decent job, he has a very unique tenor to his voice, but after seeing the test footage of Welker over Gay’s version of Megatron on the special feature to the first Transformers flick, i could never get into the series. It helps tremendously that they’re all terrible, too.
Characters like Bumblebee, Soundwave, Prowl, Jazz, Shockwave, Ultra Magnus, Rodimus Prime (for better or worse), Grimlock, Devastator, Laserbeak, Arcee, and many others have become icons. These are legacy monikers that mean so much to a fandom that has stood the testament of time. Over the last 34 years, Transformers has exploded into a force. We were given cutting edge classics like Beast Wars, light-hearted takes on the the mythos like Animated, and a more adult incarnation that, i think, is the best of the franchise without nostalgia armor, Transformers Prime. These shows elevated the mythos and carried that torch of love from my generation, to my little brothers pee group, all the way through the Gen Y kids and whoever is after them. You don’t get o be around for 34 years and not find a way to evolve with the times, to grow with your demo. In that regard, i have to give credit to Bayformers. Though, i hate those films with a passion and it’s obvious Micheal Bay has no respect for the source material, his films are the most visible of the entire franchise. They act as an easy entry point for people to dip their toe into, often leading to a tumble down that Cybertron rabbit hole into some of the richest, most convoluted, lore you can imagine.
I mean, there are excellent comics dating all the way back to the 80s from Marvel. Dreamwave had a decent run before their bankruptcy but IDW is out here doing gods work in the print. There is a plethora of brilliant stories being told set in the many realities of the Transformers Multiverse. And it’s a goddamn pleasure to sort all of that out. There are a ton of Japan only continuations of the G1 cartoon like Headmaster and Super God Masterforce as well as outright anime versions (complete with all of the anime tropes that accompany mecha shows out there) that are relatively popular. We’ve come full circle, man! I mean, there are also not so... okay versions of stuff out there like KISS players. Stay away from Kiss players. That sh*t is whack, son. Still, Japan did give us Guiltar. That motherf*cker is too dope!
I adore Transformers. I love them like i love my wife or pancakes. A ton of my pleasant childhood memories are tied up in them Robots in Disguise. More than that, though, i love how far they’ve come. Seeing this franchise blow up into a full-on movement does my heart good. Even though there inception was one of dubious greed, the franchise has outgrown those sordid beginnings to be come a breeding ground of creativity and fun. Their popularity has created a five movie, six if you count this Bumblebee spin-off, cinematic universe that rivals the success of the MCU. Well, more the Fast franchise but you get my point. No one is taking out the 300 lbs. gorilla in the Disney backed MCU. Those motherf*ckers are printing money right now. But the fact that Transformers is probably the second most popular universe out there, speaks volumes to it’s popularity. I’e been firmly on this bandwagon for 30 years and have no intention of jumping off. I’m in it for another 30 and looking forward to the future.
