Things my bio prof has said out of context:
"Don't drink petrol. But if you do, don't say that I told you to drink it."
"The snakes here are extremely venomous it doesn't matter if you're pcm or pcb or pcmb student. if you get bitten by a snake, you'll die. But don't be scared, it's only your first day."
"The next time you think about how you studied for six months but got no result, imagine your parents' situation- they raised a kid for 17 years and got no good result out of it."
"So a boy drank 2 litres of pepsi in one sitting and died. My advice is to not drink 2 litres of pepsi in one sitting, but if you absolutely have to, don't say I told you to do it."
"I didn't say that they should die, I just said they shouldn't live."
"In 2020, the only things in my lab that DIDN'T get covid were my zebrafish."
"People with glasses are unfit for living in the Darwinian "survival of the fittest" thing. So if you wear glasses, you'll probably die." (he said, as a man with glasses. bonus: a guy with glasses wanted to ask a doubt about that, but ended up removing his glasses before he stood up and asked because of this tangent)
there's probably more things he said, but I unfortunately can't remember them off the top of my head right now. but the thing is- he says all of this with a completely straight face and it is impossible to not laugh at it at all.

Peter & Company (The Original) and P&C Exclusive: How Peter Met Seth
Woah woah, man! Don’t Woah woah, man! Don’t get ahead of yourself. You can’t just go about and end your comic dive with the Peterverse with just porn, even if it would so amuse me going back to those old pages. I was going to save these for a later date when you got through a good chunk of the comic, but since tjimmy had to go in and mention those porn comics so soon, I guess I’ll have to chime in and bring this up now. Two things you have to know.
1. This version of Peter & Company you’re reading right now is not the original one. The one you’re reading right now is the 2005 reboot version of an older version of the comic that was done in 1998 to 2004. It was an old comic strip he hosted in his high school and college years before canceling it.
2. There’s a book exclusive origin story of how Seth and Peter met. They make reference of this around 190 pages in (you’ll know when you see it).
Peter & Company (1998 to 2004):
This original version of P&C was a slice-of-life, cartoon gag-ish webcomic by Jon Ponikvar.
As the title implies, it focuses on Peter and his titular company of friends. They go on many misadventures in their little town of Newington Forest like getting into water balloon fights, trying to scare each other, taking camping trips, accidently creating life, the usual kid stuff.
Peter, Seth, Iggy, Skin, Chelsea, Ezzy, Persephoni (nicknamed Q-Tip), Jeff, Eddy, Dr. Fritz and even the Worms make appearances in the old series with alternate roles and personalities (Seth and Skin are just normal kids, Persephoni and Eddy are just non-anthro talking animals, Peter and Ezzy aren’t related, etc) whilst keeping certain quirks for the reboot. There’s also an additional set of cast members that didn’t make it in the reboot like Chelsea’s other friends Levi and Birdy, her adopted parents Mandy Mink and Freddy Fox, Mandy’s best friend Betsy Batt, Freddy’s obsessive ex Keri the Siberian Tiger (who just looks like a G-rated Zig Zag), the junkyard animals that Eddy and Persephoni hang out with, and more. It’s an overly large and frankly one-note cast of characters, but it does make the world feel more lived in compared to its rebooted counterpart. It also suffered from a bad flow of unfocused stories, questionable (sometimes forced) comedy, and bit too wacky in certain places.
It was never re-released publicly because the author thought it was embarrassing or thought it would confuse readers from the newer version they’re reading. Personally, I think that’s a very dumb reason to hide this away from readers on a story that gives context to some things that end up in your reboot, but whatever. It’s here now. You don’t really need to read it, but it explains a few things like where the worms came from and what roles some of the cast from the 2005 version were like back then.
Peter And Company Book - Exclusive Comic #1: How Peter Met Seth:
It’s basically just what it is. An origin story showing us how miserable Peter is from being lonely, friendless, bullied, and neglected by his mother (elements that the webcomic for some reason doesn’t replicate well at all) before meeting Seth. It’s sad that this is the only time where you can actually feel bad about Peter. It does a better job at showing off our main character’s plights and introducing Seth as his Guardian. It’s more clear how pitiful he is compared to the main webcomic where it’s more comedic and he’s insufferable and unlucky.
The Old Version of the comic can be seen on E-hentai (here) and Imgur (here).
You can see the Exclusive Comic the same way through E-hentai (here) and Imgur (here).
Oh you’ve got to be SHITTING ME. When the hell did anyone mention there was a pre-reboot version of P&C? I don’t care if some of you mentioned it once. Obviously it has been years or it was part of a wall of text. The Peterverse rabbit hole never ends.
I should’ve started with the pre-reboot comic and then went into the main comic. These changes sound interesting and I almost feel like the original version does help a lot of the reboot make sense. But what’s done is done, I may target this comic before I move on to Peter and Whitney, I guess I will eventually start missing the pre-Whitney wackiness of this comic.
As for the exclusive, I feel like that could be riffed after the pre-reboot but before Peter and Whitney as sort of a curtain call to the original wackier era of the comic, so the order of the Peterverse riff would be Peter and Company -> Peter and Company Original Version -> How Peter met Seth -> Peter and Whitney -> Peter and Whitney Porn
Man, E-hentai is a bigger blessing to webcomic preservation than Internet Archive. They deserve some sort of a medal.
That bing said I wouldn’t be surprised if when I wake up tomorrow, someone is already suggesting me to riff Peter and Company: The Musical.

Putting on Hairs - Post Production: Coffee Nap
Primary Pairing: ShikiMei Rating: G Words: 606 AU: Theater, Monsters, Cryptids Fandom: Love Live Superstar Parent Fic: Putting on Hairs - Post Production Time Frame: Early college years Event: Promptober 2022 Event Source: Idol Fanfic Heaven channel on Discord Prompt: Nap
---------
Author’s Note: Entry for a Backup prompt
Summary: Shiki and Mei return home after the accident to rest
---------
“How are things going in here?” Mei asked, opening the door to the lab.
“Fine.” Shiki replied. Her voice sounded exhausted.
The couple had returned to their dorm instead of going to class, after a close call with a vehicular crash. And as if that hadn’t been bad enough, a transformer had exploded, causing an EMP that had disabled most of Shiki’s mechanical parts. Both girls’ eyes had shut down, but at least Mei was used to navigating without sight, and she had ended up carrying Shiki.
The air of the lab was acrid with solder smoke. And while Shiki usually kept her room tidy, it was not uncommon for some clutter to accumulate when she was intensely focused on her work. Mei shuffled through the room to avoid stepping on or kicking anything important.
“Here, maybe this will help?” Mei held out a mug of coffee.
“Thank you, Mei.” Shiki accepted. “I’m glad you were able get it to work.”
“It was… actually kind of fun.” Mei admitted, feeling a bit guilty that she had been amusing herself with the eclectic device Shiki had assembled from lab equipment while her girlfriend was busy repairing herself.
“Mm… This is delicious. Even better than when I make it.”
“That can’t be true, I did everything the exact same way I’ve watched you do it.”
“Perhaps it simply tastes better because I know Mei made it.”
Mei felt heat rise in her cheeks. “A-Anyway, is there anything I can help with?”
“Thank you, but no. I’ve already repaired my arm and leg, but my eyes are proving to be a bit more… difficult. I’m sorry, Mei, but it may be a little while before I can repair yours.”
“As I’ve said, don’t worry about mine… Wait, does that mean you repaired the rest of yourself while not being able to see?”
“Yes. It was Mei who inspired me to learn how to use my other senses more. I know how each component part feels, sounds and smells, and I know how my tools operate.”
“That’s… kind of amazing, Shiki.”
“I would not have thought about trying it were it not for Mei.”
For heaven’s sake, just take the compliment… “Anyway, you sound tired.”
“…”
“Why don’t you take a break, and we can go take a nap?”
“After we just had coffee?”
“Yes, I read something a while back about coffee naps and how they are supposed to be better than regular naps.”
“Interesting.”
Mei reached down to take Shiki’s hand. “You said your leg works now, right? Or do you need me to carry you still?”
“I can walk.” Shiki replied, standing up.
Mei then guided them back to her room. And while she wasn’t carrying Shiki, the other girl started to give into her obvious weariness from their morning misadventure and was leaning on her heavily by the time they reached their bed.
Then, Mei helped Shiki slip her lab coat off her shoulders before climbing into bed. Shiki followed and immediately nuzzled into the crook of Mei’s neck. Shiki released a content sigh and within seconds, seemed to be out.
Mei couldn’t help smiling. As calm and collected, if eccentric and detached, as Shiki could often be, she was surprisingly needy, especially when it came to physical affection. And sometimes Mei found that trait to be annoying, particularly while the couple were out in public. But here, in the privacy of their room, when they were going to take a nap together, she was willing to see it as endearing.
Finally, Mei wrapped an arm around her girlfriend and let herself fall asleep as well.

Author’s Note Continued: Had to remind myself about avoiding visuals again with this one.

TROPED: JATP MASTER LIST
And for our encore, the Master List of all 53 (fifty-three!?) fanfics written for our FIRST Julie and the Phantoms TROPED event!! It was such a treat for us to see how a new fandom took on our prompts! We, here at TROPED, love it when our authors push the limits of what a trope can be, and this fandom kept us on our toes, and we loved every word! We hope you enjoy these trope bending, phantastic fics as much as we did!
New rockstar writers joined us for the first time for this event, which is the coolest thing for us! We love getting to see how different fandoms interpret our prompts and how you see these stories through the lens of different characters. We learned a lot about how to run an event this round, with new voices helping us to make TROPED better, which was so exciting. We came out of this event with new ideas, and we’re pumped for what’s next! We hope you’ll join us again soon ;)!
*Some summaries have been edited for length. Tumblr has a max post length. Who knew!
ROUND 1: ANGST FICS
The Tropes:
Character discovers they’re not human
Coffee Shop AU
Poorly Timed Confession
Character A catches Character B crying
————
the sky was gray and white and (cloudy) (Rated T) [Alex x Willie] by @screamin-amuseum
Summary: “I’ve got you,” Willie’s whispering over and over, panic creeping into his voice. “Alex, I’ve got you, okay? Come on, baby, come on, it’s okay, I’ve got you, you’re gonna be okay, I love you–”
Alex spits out what feels like a clot of blood and gives Willie a tired grin, probably looking completely insane.
“That’s pretty gay of you,” he says, just as his vision clouds over and he passes out.
Honey, You’re Familiar (Like My Mirror Years Ago) (Rated T) [Julie x Luke] by nik_knows_nothing
Summary: Luke works at a coffee shop, which is normal, quietly pines after his coworker, which is normal, and also occasionally steals people’s faces without really meaning to.
It’s probably that last part that moves him pretty solidly out of the “normal” territory.
But that’s fine, that’s totally cool.
He’s handling it super well.
You Can’t Value People Less Than a Good, Hot Cup of Bean Juice (It Just Seems Rude) (Rated T) [Julie x Luke] by nik_knows_nothing
Summary: Julie gets a job at a coffee stand in the middle of nowhere.
It’ll help to pass the time, if nothing else.
And if there’s a cute guy who works the shift after her and sometimes leaves her ridiculously endearing messages on an ancient tape recorder?
Well, that’s just a bonus.
honest to god I’ll break your heart, tear you to pieces and rip you apart (Rated T) [Julie x Luke] by @tonightthestarsalign
Summary: the siren!Julie AU no one asked for
new instincts (Rated T) [Luke x Reggie] by @comeonpeters
Summary: Reggie is fine with being the only human member of his band, Julie and the Phantoms (tell your friends!), just like he’s fine with being the only single member. It doesn’t make him feel lonely, and he’s only picking up more shifts at the coffee shop because he needs more money, not because he’s avoiding being alone. And picking up more shifts at the coffee shop is making the work easier! He’s only a little confused by the fact that he can now touch the espresso machine mid shift without burning himself… must be all of the experience.
you look like you’ve just seen a monster (is that what i look like to you?) (Rated T) [Bobby x Alex x Luke x Reggie] by @aroacethetic-shitpost
Summary: it’s angsty tiefling bobby time, folks!
We Are Monsters, We Are Proud (Rated G) [Flynn x Carrie, Julie x Luke] by @americanhoney913
Summary: Carrie finds herself at a college like no other in search of her dad and some answers. Julie’s not feeling good and maybe staring at roses wasn’t the best idea.
Monster College/Coffeeshop AU
sending forth their beautiful voice, and my heart was fain to listen (Rated G) [Julie x Carrie] by @madeline-kahn
Summary: Months after the death of her mom, Julie prepares to sing again and makes an upsetting discovery.
rise from the ashes (Rated M) [Alex x Willie] by @willexxmercer
Summary: At a time when everything was going wrong for Alex, the one bright spot in his life was the charming barista at the coffee shop he frequented. At least, it was the bright spot until everything went up in flames. All he could do was hope that they could rise from the ashes and figure things out together.
Siren’s Song (Rated T) [Ray x Rose] by hufflebibin
Summary: The Scopuli was never meant to be a permanent arrangement. Rose had taken the job straight out of school just looking to make a little extra money before the tour kicked off.
That was four years ago.
After a string of bad luck befalls Rose and the Petal Pushers, she can’t help but wonder if she is the problem. Or is there something more sinister at play?
Yellow (Rated T) [Julie & Reggie] by @tmp-jatp
Summary: Reggie just wanted to get some new guitar strings. A shapeshifter!Reggie au
Angels Like You (Rated T) [Luke x Reggie] by @sunsetcurveofficial
Summary: Reggie is having a bit of a weird day. It gets worse when he figures out that it’s because he died in his sleep and has somehow been walking around as a ghost without realising it. Meeting Luke helps. Luke says he’s a fellow ghost, and there is something about him that Reggie just feels drawn to. Falling for him is the easiest thing Reggie has ever done, but Luke is a little more than he lets on, and it turns out that their story actually started long before Reggie thought it did.
look into my eyes (it’s where my demons hide) (Rated T) [Flynn x Carrie] by @fanfics-she-wrote
Summary: Hiding out from demons was never a desirable nightmare. Of course, Carrie would much prefer a run-for-my-life nightmare than actually running for her life. Having Flynn around is a very welcome soothing balm, though.
Bring All The Monsters Out To Play, Let All The Red Erase The Grey (Rated T) [Bobby & Reggie] by @kennysbirthday
Summary: Mythologicals, Reggie realised, were kind of like queer people. Sometimes your Token Human friend turns around one day and admits that actually, there was something they were suppressing all along, and they hadn’t realised.
–
Reggie’s final exam has been pushed forward at the most inconvenient time. Bobby is sick, Alex is missing, and now he needs to help a selkie get their ‘Happily-Ever-After’ in order to scrape a passing grade. Oh, and if his boss catches him handing out more free coffee, he’s gonna get fired.
————
ROUND 2: FLUFF FICS
The Tropes:
Exes
Time Loop AU
Camp Counselors
Prank Wars
————
Okay, Campers, Rise and Shine! (Rated T) [Julie x Luke] by nik_knows_nothing
Summary: The Groundhog Day meets Gravity Falls meets Summer Camp meets The Author’s Own Distaste For Prank Wars AU that no one asked for. Ever. At all.
Starting To Forget (Just What Summer Ever Meant To You) (Not Rated) [Flynn x Carrie] by bi_magic
Summary: Last summer didn’t end on a positive note for Carrie Wilson - she and her girlfriend broke up on the last night of camp, and she’s been miserable since. But it seems that the universe is intent on having her fix that this summer. Even if that means she has to live through the same day over and over and over again until she does.
Creative B.S. Was No More, Was No Less (Look Around, You’re Gonna Miss What You Found) (Rated T) [Alex x Luke, Flynn x Reggie] by @americanhoney913
Summary: Alex and Luke go undercover on a mission to a summer camp in order to find a talisman that could endanger the camp and all the kids. While there, they bond with the kids and make peace with the fact that they broke up.
While Alex and Luke are away, Flynn accidentally fucks with time.
bitch but like romantically (Rated T) [Flynn x Carrie] by @screamin-amuseum
Summary: or: flynn gets stuck in a time loop. {for troped jatp round 2}
down by the bay (Rated T) [Alex x Willie] by @sunsetcurbed
Summary: Over time, Camp Phantom has simply become known as a selective summer camp: one that took only the kids that Caleb saw promise in. And Caleb wasn’t exactly lying. He really did take only the ones he saw promise in, he simply looked for different traits than others might.
For example, say, hypothetically, a boy who could see the future. Or, hypothetically, a girl who could interact with ghosts. Or, hypothetically, a boy who could summon objects to him with a simple thought. Or, and this is completely hypothetical mind you, a boy who could manipulate time.
Those might be some traits that Caleb saw promise in. Just, like, as examples.
Time will tell (But only if you do it right) (Rated T) [Flynn x Carrie] by @malecacidd
Summary: Carrie had been acting a little off for a week or so, but Flynn was pretty much known for seeing something in nothing, and that was probably what they were doing then. If something was going on, Carrie would tell her eventually.
OR
Who knew all it took was a little bit of miscommunication to mess up time itself?
and so it begins (Rated T) [Bobby x Reggie] by @comeonpeters
Summary: It’s the first day of their second week at Camp Carolling (they’re spending an entire month, and they’re getting paid to be there!) when Reggie gets a little lost in the woods. During this misadventure into the woods, he finds an egg shaped rock, an inhabited cabin that may or may not be riddled with signs, and something that might be magic. He probably doesn’t get paid enough to discover magic.
or, when they were thirteen years old, four boys met at camp carolling and eventually became a band that almost became something legendary. now, all four boys are coming back as counselors, three boys in one band and one boy in his own solo act.
so begins the reunion, though it doesn’t go how any of them imagine.
Porcupine Day (Rated T) [Bobby x Ray x Rose] by @wr0temyway0ut
Summary: It’s been fifteen years since Trevor broke up with Ray and Rose and they’re… not fine, but managing. But when Trevor to adds insult to injury and buys the camp across the lake from the one they once owned together, the two camps become locked in a bitter rivalry. With neither side willing to set aside their pride and work out their issues, the universe decides to settle their fates itself.
Day After Day (After Day After Day) (Rated T) [Alex x Willie] by hufflebibin
Summary: When Alex met Willie just after their senior year of high school, they spent a wonderful three months dating before their relationship ended in a blaze of glory. Now, four years later, they meet again as counselors at a summer camp. The only problem? Alex keeps reliving their first day together. The day that Luke had declared “Prank Day.”
This is not how Alex pictured his summer going.
clocks move faster (it’s all we’re after) (Rated G) [Julie x Luke] by @willexxmercer
Summary: Julie likes it when her friends are happy, so when she realizes she’s stuck in a time loop, she uses her knowledge to make sure everything works out for everyone… except she conveniently forgets to factor herself (and Luke) into the mix.
Touch of Magic (Not Rated) [Alex x Luke] by @williexmercer
Summary: When everything stands in Luke and Alex’s way of getting to be with the people they love, they have to repeat the day over and over until they can get the happily ever after that they want.
the play’s the thing (that goes wrong) (Rated T) [Alex x Willie] by @madeline-kahn
Summary: Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day for Macbeth, but not so for Alex and the production of Hamlet that he is directing and starring in. And while he’s stuck repeating the day of the performance over and over, mishaps of all kinds befall the cast.
anything, anything (for another run with you) (Rated T) [Alex x Willie] by @aroacethetic-shitpost
Summary: the camp counselor/exes/prank war/time loop fic of your dreams (unless you read all of the other troped round 2 fics lmao)
there’s a glorious sunrise, dappled with the flickers of light (Rated T) [Julie x Luke] by @tonightthestarsalign
Summary: ex-best friends Luke and Julie, working as camp counselors at rivaling camps, find themselves stuck in a time loop
the daughter of apollo (Rated T) [Julie x Luke] by @the-most-beautiful-broom
Summary: the JATP x Camp Half Blood AU that nobody asked for
maybe the world isn’t ending (maybe it’s been postponed) (Rated G) [Julie x Luke] by @tmp-jatp
Summary: It’s the last day of camp and Julie has one more prank planned for Luke. He just doesn’t know what it is.
Here We Go Again (Rated T) [Julie x Luke] by @kybee1497
Summary: Julie blinked as she stared at the place Euterpe had disappeared. What did that even mean? What journey? Old places and lost faces? What was she talking about? But before she could dwell on the questions swirling around in her mind, the sky full of stars began to move, shifting in place and descending until they were all around her. Julie felt her feet leave the ground as she rose up and up. One star in particular was burning brighter than the others, growing bigger in front of her.
It grew and grew, until the light was blinding and Julie had to throw a hand up against the harsh light. She closed her eyes as the light surrounded her and then she was falling. Falling down, down, down.

ROUND 3: CANONVERSE FICS
The Tropes:

Summary: the rob/bright lighting guy fic literally nobody asked for but i wrote anyways. enjoy gays, bring ur tissues

Summary: Before Julie and the Phantoms, before the guys became ghosts, before Sunset Curve – they were Luke and Alex. Not 5 feet apart cause they’re totally gay.
who cares if one more light goes out? (in a sky of a million stars) (Rated T) [Ray/Rose] by @tonightthestarsalign
Summary: The first and the last time Ray ever kissed Rose.
we can forget the world (just you and me) (Rated T) [Alex/Willie] by @sunsetcurbed
Summary: “This was the first place I ever came out to someone,” Alex says, spinning around and taking in the tree house.
together we can take on the world (Rated G) [Alex/Reggie] by @comeonpeters
Summary: Alex Mercer meets Reggie Peters on October 8, 1983, which means that two days have passed since Reggie’s sixth birthday, because Reggie is a Libra according to the magazines that his mom reads when she gets Reggie to paint her toenails. He’s also just moved to Los Angeles, California from his hometown of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a small town in the mountains, and he’s told Alex Mercer about all of this in the three minutes that they’ve known each other, and he might be the loudest, most obnoxious boy that Alex has ever met, and he absolutely has to be Alex’s new best friend.
The Peters family moves in down the street from the Mercers in 1983, and so begins the rest of their lives.
Long Live (Can I start another life with you?) (Rated T) [Julie/Luke] by @smolfangirl
Summary: It’s all too much for one day: first a muffin, then more heartbeats. Julie just needs some time to think. If Luke runs after her to sit by her side so she doesn’t lose it, she won’t complain.
Except afterwards, he starts acting weird. Very weird. And months later, she’s tired of letting him keep his distance.
She can’t do this. Not right now. Not today.
She jumps back on her feet.
The excited grin falls from Luke’s face. She doesn’t try to catch it.
“I – I think this is too much. I need some time. Alone. Sorry.”
Then she runs. She runs past the calloused fingers reaching out to her. Past Reggie and the door, past carved pumpkins on porches and Cornelia Street.
She just runs.
Roses (Rated G) [Emily & Luke, Alex/Luke] by @americanhoney913
Summary: It becomes a sacred place she shares with her son. Mitch is usually off at work from dawn until six o’clock, but Emily’s working from home for now. She works as a florist’s shop right outside the neighborhood. So she brings home seeds and little flowers and other cuts from the store; she and Luke will spend hours out in the dirt, planting seeds and making mud pies and Luke will babble about whatever happened in daycare and make up stories about the different flowers.
Somewhere Only We Know (Rated T) [Nick/Carrie] by hufflebibin
Summary: A journey through Nick Danforth-Evan’s life as experienced in the safety of his backyard hide away.
The Itty Bitty Details (Rated T) [Alex/Willie] by @williexmercer & @futurearchaeologyprof
Summary: 5 times Willie knew Alex and one where Alex knew Willie
you’re the only one who makes me (my wildflower) (Rated T) [Bobby/Reggie] by @willexxmercer
Summary: The tree was Reggie’s safe space, and Bobby was his safe person. He could escape all his troubles there, except for one nagging thought - did he have feelings for his best friend?
Dying complicated things.
because i’ve known you so long, i know every cadence and what they mean (Rated G) [Alex & Julie, Julie/Luke] by @tmp-jatp
Summary: the Juke 5+1 fic from Alex’s POV.
Someday (I’ll See You Again) (Rated T) [Alex/Willie] by @kybee1497
Summary: They’re wrong. Alex, you are not a failure. You’re incredible. You’re smart. You’re funny, and the best friend I could ask for. You’re a wicked talented drummer and you have a beautiful voice. And more important than all of that, is that you’re you, Alex. And the you you are is wonderful, and lovable and perfect. If your parents can’t see that, that’s their own fault. But I swear, Alex. If you’re afraid of them, I need you to tell me. You have to be safe.” Willie’s voice had gone desperate by the end. Alex deserved to know how freaking amazing he was and the fact that his parents didn’t bother to tell him, and actively worked to tear him down instead, was infuriating.
But Willie also worried about him. He’d worried about Alex since the first time he heard Mr. Mercer shouting through the window, a worry that never really went away. Not with the way Alex automatically straightened up when his parents were mentioned, as if he could hear his dad lecturing him about appearances from miles away. Not with the way Alex looked when he was with them, perfectly pieced together and falling apart at the seams, eyes distant and shoulders tense. Willie was pretty sure he had worrying about Alex etched in his bones by this point.
The Energy Never Dies (Rated T) [Gen Fic] by @americanhoney913
Summary: Four moments across time in the loft of the Molina’s garage.

Look, Steal From the Rich. Do It. (Rated T) [Julie/Luke] by nik_knows_nothing
Summary: A Julie and the Phantoms Star Wars AU that kind of looks into the ramifications of soul marks in a turbulent society, but mostly just focuses on the gang infiltrating a fancy Core World party.
take my heart (and take my hand) (Rated T) [Alex/Willie] by @sunsetcurbed
Summary: The stranger smiles. “I’m Willie,” he greets.
“Alex,” Alex nods back.
“Sir,” Willie says pointedly, and smirks up at him as he bows exaggeratedly.
“The word sir is coming out of your mouth directed at me, but I don’t feel like you just addressed me as a sir at all. And please, call me Alex.”
“My apologies,” Willie hums, straightening back up. And then, pointedly, he lowers himself back into the same bow and makes deliberate eye contact with Alex. “Sir.”
Alex blinks. “You’re not going to call me Alex, are you?”
“Absolutely not, Sir.”

Okay, So You’re Interrupting the Political Guy Again, So Think About That (Rated T) [Julie/Luke] by nik_knows_nothing
Summary: Julie and the Phantoms meets The Goblin Emperor meets a soulmate AU meets the author’s stunning lack of what I assume is basic knowledge on how monarchies work.

Summary: “Hello. It feels strange, resorting to notes like this, but I couldn’t think of any other way. I know you’re here, somewhere. At the ball. I’ve tried to find you for the past few nights. My parents always told me never to believe in looped days and soulmates, but I think this just proves that they were wrong.
My name is Willie. I don’t know how to find you, but sometimes I feel like I’m drawn to you. Like I can just sense you nearby. I don’t know if you’ll find this, but if you do, I’ll try to wait for you on the balcony.
Until we meet.”
our best days are yet unknown (Rated T) [Alex/Reggie/Willie] by @aroacethetic-shitpost
Summary: When Prince Alexander of Sacuria meets his fiance, Prince William of Coterra, he’s astonished to discover that he recognizes his daemon. He recognizes it as one of the other shapes that his own daemon is able to take… as his soulmate. The only problem? Alex already has a soulmate: Reggie Peters, his childhood best friend. What should he do about finally meeting his second soulmate?
Panic and run away? Yeah, sure.
Little does he know he’s about to have a bigger problem than that…

mikejay fic rec list, how embarrasing...
snow globe* by someknave
SNOW GLOBE (2018) [VHS LETTERBOX]
FRONT COVER COPY:
For as long as you love me so...
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
BACK COVER COPY:
Just in time for Christmas, it’s an existential horror story for the whole family! Featuring two VCR repairmen from Milwaukee (or are they) and their friend Rich, a Cupid demon from outer space. Join our heroes as they fight the forces of a mysterious evil that wants them destroyed at any cost. Does love conquer all? Does anybody REALLY know what time it is? And where does Mr. Plinkett fit in?? Rated PG-13.
(46114 words, rated T)
i think this is my all time favorite? i’m in love with the surreal concept and i think it’s executed really well (like i’m a sucker for concept driven films a la groundhog day and this one is an existential dream!) if ur gonna read one, read this one! also it plays with mike and jay as characters in a really cool way
in case of emergency, save your own soul before assisiting others by goodoldfashioned
Mike makes a deal with the devil to get Jay to want him, later has some regrets.
Can a surly guardian angel named Rich help Mike steal his soul back from the Prince of Darkness before Jay’s is gone for good?
(75807 words, rated E)
one of the tags on this is ‘mike cries a lot’ which i thought was funny. again, cool concept that actually explores some ideas of free will??? (which sounds weird for rpf but it works) also u could probably read any goodoldfashioned fic bc they are all quality
feelings by coq
Jay shut the door behind them, locked it, and turned to Mike with crossed arms and a furrowed brow. "Why do you insist on touching me all the fucking time?"
(2007 words, rated T)
short and sweet! friends to lovers, nothing too extreme (not too explicit or anything) and a very funny feelings realization
gold by zerotolerancezone
Mike shifts to put his head heavily in Jay’s lap, obviously drunk.
“My fault ain’t givin’ you gloves.”
“That didn’t make any fucking sense.”
He snorts, laughs bubbling out of him despite himself.
(671 words, rated G)
this fic has a really nice atmosphere and is a cozy little read :-)
misadventures in babysitting* by goodoldfashioned
The aliens who granted Rich immortality are angry with him. Unable to kill him, they de-age him in revenge, leaving him with Jay and Mike as makeshift parents, surely the cruelest punishment available.
(OR IS IT)
(26,170 words, rated E)
omg this is the ultimate guilty pleasure fic. i mean c’mon: kid rich, accidental kid acquisition, found family? my lil bi heart needs nothing more. the scenes with jay and rich are really sweet and it’s just...Nice :-)
nothing else by asbestosgang
Mike is in Hell, probably.
(4409 words, rated G)
one of the tags is “not romantic but they’re both there” so it’s not explicit mikejay? but i still think it’s such a cool and unique fic. again a surrealist/existentialist take on them being trapped in the vcr repair shop physically and??? in another way??? idk very cool
an A for effort by asbestosgang
It's their anniversary! Neither of them know what they're doing. But they DO know they're in love. And love is pretty nice.
(2,959 words, rated G)
this one is pure domestic (and realistic) fluff that isn’t explicit if that sort of thing isn’t your cup of tea. realizing now that i only want to read either fluff or surrealist horror with no in between haha
scrawny motherfucker with a cool hairstyle* by goodoldfashioned
“You’re disgusting and you don’t know when to quit.”
“Those are your two favorite things about me, Jay.”
(57,857 words, rated E)
saving (one of the) best for last! this one is a semi-highschool au (the author note says “I had this idea: what if they knew each other a little bit in high school in rural Wisconsin before they both ended up working at the VCR repair shop, and that's why Jay sort of defers to Mike, because Mike is forever a cool & hot upperclassman in his mind.”) anyways i really love how their dynamic shifts and is written in this one and the dialogue is!!!! so good.
bonus! one WIP by @gaybaumans
my best friend the vampire (but make it gay) by marveyrosster 🔒
“What the fuck happened to you?” Jay asked, his arms folded tightly across his chest.
Mike sighed, finally lowering his arms and casting his eyes downwards, away from Jay. “This is going to sound absolute batshit crazy and you aren’t going to believe a second of it.”
“Try me,” Jay replied, and even to him, his voice sounded unsure.
“I wasn’t even planning on coming back here. I wasn’t really. I tried to the first night and I was in our room and I saw you there and I just- I freaked the fuck out. Things can never go back to normal and I thought coming here would be just. A bad fucking idea. But I’m helpless and you’re into all that weird horror shit and I thought maybe-”
“MIKE,” Jay interrupted. “Tell me what happened.”
“Jay… I’m a vampire.”
(6348 words, rated M)
listen...i’m a sucker for AUs (college and vampires? sign me up!) very good so far and i’m super excited to see where it goes
#mostly did this as an excuse to reread some of these >;)#if anyone has any recs (but be aware ive been thru the entire tag on ao3) send them my way!#no main tags bc i know its not 4 everyone#mikejay#fics#long post

Chapter 9: Into the Unknown
A boy named Mark was born on April 26th, 1976, fourteen years and one day before a boy named, uh, me. We’re both Virginians, but he moved to Florida as a kid while I stayed in the Old Dominion through college. Summers in Virginia are hot and humid and full of mosquitoes, which is why I love winter so much, but summers in Florida are so much worse. Despite that, Mark was an outdoorsy kid, and his adventures along the water inspired a literal dream he had around the time I was born about going on adventures across the seas, a dream that saw him start to make up stories about this alternate self. (I had nothing to do with it, we’ve never met and even if we had I wasn’t a particularly inspirational baby, but after so many introductions about animators of the past, it’s neat to think about how recently this last bit of history spans).
Mark moved to Utah in high school, and his swashbuckling appearance and attitude reminded his new classmates of Thorpe, Errol Flynn’s character in The Sea Hawk (as one of my sources helpfully notes, the reference to a 1940 film is likely due to the more conservative leanings of early 90s Salt Lake City making older films movies more popular). It’d be weird enough for “Thorpe” to become a lifelong nickname based on this tenuous connection, but the nickname Mark ended up with is actually a mispronunciation of name that I guess nobody felt the need to correct. High school, am I right?
Thurop Van Orman began his career in animation as an intern at Cartoon Network, and parlayed that into storyboarding gigs for The Powerpuff Girls and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. He learned from the likes of Craig McCracken as he honed his idea into a pitch for a show about a kid like him who loved capers on the high seas, and in 2008, the stories inspired by his childhood dream became a cartoon. For two years and three seasons, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack not only entertained with its hilarious and surreal escapades, but incubated a crew of animators that shaped the 2010s.
J. G. Quintel, creator of Regular Show? Flapjack alum. Peter Browngardt, creator of Secret Mountain Fort Awesome and Uncle Grandpa? Flapjack alum. Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls? Flapjack alum (who brought Thurop in to voice the villainous Gideon). Pendleton Ward, creator of Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors? Flapjack alum, and his continuation of the Flapjack style of storytelling, where writers doubled as storyboarders, would shape Adventure Time alum Rebecca Sugar’s own methodology as she created Steven Universe. This would not be Thurop’s only “grandchild,” as the likes of Bee and Puppycat, Clarence, OK K.O., Summer Camp Island, and Infinity Train were all created from alums of shows created by Flapjack alums, and we’re even starting to see great-“grandchildren” like Craig of the Creek and Victor and Valentino.
But I left out one Flapjack alum who worked with Ward to develop Adventure Time from a viral short with a ton of potential into a sustainable television show, becoming the show’s creative director for the first two seasons. His name was (and still is) Patrick McHale, and in October of 2011, he started working on a pilot of his own.
“The river runs cold, the fight is over; still, the haunted ruins of night call your name.”
A trope that I’ve never been fond of when it comes to twists is when flashbacks are used to remind us of the foreshadowing or give old scenes new context. It can work in the right circumstances, but more often than not it shows a certain lack of trust, either in the audience for not paying attention or in the material for not being memorable, and it sucks the joy out of rewatching the story to catch hints for yourself. I much prefer a twist that maybe gives us a moment to take it all in (which is frankly pretty easy to do, all it takes is a character who’s as stunned as we are to allow us that time to process), and believing in us to understand the ramifications of this twist on our own.
Into the Unknown thrives in its bluntness. There’s no attempt to be clever about the reveal that Wirt and Greg are of our world in the late 20th century, we just begin right away with Wirt wearing semi-modern clothes in a semi-modern bedroom fumbling with a semi-modern cassette, all to the backdrop of a semi-modern-sounding song sung by Pat McHale himself. His actions are confusing at first to match our own initial confusion, creating the outfit we’re familiar with by taking the coat from an old-timey uniform and cutting the fluff off a Santa hat and putting on a fan to let his cloak billow in the wind (it helps that we already know he’s a weird and overdramatic kid). But our questions answer themselves with time: it’s Halloween, Wirt’s planning on giving his crush a mixtape, and Greg's series-spanning kettle hat is just his glorious take on an elephant.
This is Wirt pre-development, so he’s back to the dithering and the abysmally low confidence and the open hostility towards Greg; the last of these makes a comeback when he reaches peak despair, but even while depressed he's moved beyond the crippling indecision of his early adventures (although certainty in one’s looming demise isn’t much better). Still, even this early on we can see that he’s not a lost cause. He might get lightly teased by the first teens we see, but his appearance at the party reveals that he’s liked by plenty of his classmates, and Sara’s mutual crush is immediately obvious: his biggest enemy is his lack of self-esteem. And while he loses his nerve as soon as he sees Sara the Bee, this wouldn’t be possible if he didn’t have nerve in the first place: the beginning of Into the Unknown, and thus the first chronological moments that we see of Wirt, shows him getting out of a funk to take a genuine risk, one that fully merits him dropping the episode’s title on us.
The pursuit of Sara the Bee shifts us wildly from the dark atmosphere of the Unknown to classic teen comedy territory, where one crazy night can change everything. The stakes are fully personal for the bulk of the episode: Wirt needs to get his tape back to avoid embarrassment, and Greg wants to get the tape back so Wirt will hunt frogs with him. I like the detail that Wirt’s been flaking out on his promise and that Greg almost gets that he’s being blown off, but clings to that childish hope as he bulldozes through the barriers Wirt puts up for himself. Greg is first seen as a helper, doing chores for Mrs. Daniels for the candy he’ll use to make a trail in The Old Grist Mill instead of trick or treating, which implies a certain level of neglect: nobody’s around to take him door to door to get candy the proper way, and we don’t see him interact with any kids his age.
That said, the mood of the episode is definitely more mellow than melancholy, with Wirt’s awkwardness earning laughs and cringes in equal measure. Sara is delightful as she assures Wirt (and parents in the audience) that the teens are gonna drink age-appropriate drinks and do age-appropriate stuff, and she’s got the best costume game of anyone, first as a mascot and then as a skeletal clown. The cops try for humor as well, and while it’s funny for us, their position of authority makes them terrible at telling jokes in a way that will come back to haunt us. This is the last bit of levity before the finale, and unlike Babes in the Wood, hindsight never taints its goofiness. Particularly because the greatest joke of the episode, and perhaps the series, is far more upfront about its larger story implications than Greg’s magical dream.
Jason Funderberker is an oddly central character in Over the Garden Wall, a figure of dread established midway through the series as Wirt’s impossibly perfect romantic rival and the eventual namesake of Jason Funderburker. We confirm that Jason is a big deal when Wirt talks to the girls at the big game; sure, most of the impact comes from his outsized reaction, but Jason is still presented as serious competition for Sara’s heart. After going full crisis mode at the thought of Jason and Sara listening to his tape, we get a red herring of sorts in Jimmy the Jock. He certainly fits the “total package” bill that Wirt promised: a kind hunk who clearly respects women’s boundaries but warns Wirt off spying on Sara rather than trying to display his machismo through force. All signs point to a hopeless situation until finally, with perfect comedic timing, we meet the man in question.
It’s not just that Jason Funderberker is small and scrawny, or that his outfit and hair are pretty dorky (that said, let’s consider the source): it’s that damned voice. He’s given an absolutely perfect grating squeak from Cole Sanchez, yet another Flapjack alum who took over as creative director on Adventure Time after McHale moved to New York. The idea that this dweeb is the object of Wirt’s unending jealousy is an amazing punchline by itself, but as I said, the larger story implications are immediately clear, because there’s one thing that truly separates Jason from Wirt: confidence.
Jason might not be the most conventional ladies’ man out there on paper, but unlike Wirt, he’s capable of making a move. He’s as blind to Sara’s lack of interest as Wirt is to Sara’s active interest, but dammit, he tries. And he doesn’t even try in a gross or intrusive way, handling Sara’s implicit rejection well enough and ending up holding hands with his bespectacled admirer in our final episode. Literally all it takes for Wirt to “compete” with this guy is an ounce of self-assuredness, so it tracks that his journey through the Unknown achieves just that.
The Unknown might be another realm that these brothers have yet to face, but our understanding of it seeps throughout the episode. There’s the obvious reference to the show’s title as the pair climbs over the wall of the Eternal Gardens cemetery, and the grave of Quincy Endicott in said cemetery, but it’s also felt in the inability for Wirt to see the truth that he’s well-liked and that Sara definitely likes him back. It’s in the recurring bird imagery, with one girl dressed as an egg (who, and I noticed this for the first time in this watch, is voiced by Ashly Burch!) and another as a bluebird. It’s the fact that we’ve got disguises in general because it’s Halloween, considering the sheer amount of characters who aren’t what they appear in the Unknown: Enoch is really a cat, the gorilla is really a circus performer, the ghost is really a tea magnate, the huge singing frog is really our heroes huddled under a big coat, and the devourer is the sweet girl rather than the witch.
The most straightforward character, of course, is Greg. To be as fair to Wirt as I can be, his little brother does throw a wrench in things when he can’t stop giving the girls hints about Wirt’s crush, which sets off the chain reaction leading to what appears to be a disastrous night, so if you squint hard enough, Wirt isn’t wrong to blame the kid for his troubles. But without Greg, Wirt never would’ve gotten the courage to talk to Sara, and he certainly wouldn’t have entered the party uninvited. Greg’s willingness to engage perhaps needs to be tamped down in the same way Wirt’s needs to be amped up, as he has all the social skills of a little kid, but at least Greg has the excuse of, well, being a little kid.
More importantly, Wirt’s instinct to blame everyone but himself makes it impossible for him to see that he’s the one holding himself back. Acceptance and a relationship with Sara are right there in front of him, he just needs the courage to acknowledge it. Greg’s best bit of advice is that he join marching band, given he plays the clarinet anyway and it would allow him to spend time with Sara organically, but Wirt angrily dismisses the suggestion as interference while revealing that Greg’s father has given the same advice. It’s the second and final time we’re reminded that these two are half-brothers, but only now do we bring up that there’s distance between Wirt and his stepfather that seems to be one-sided. As per his song in our fourth episode, Greg was born after Wirt’s mom remarried, so his stepdad has been his stepdad for a significant period of time by now, but Wirt still venomously refers to him as “your stupid dad” as if he’s a stranger, even though the guy is ostensibly encouraging Wirt via his interests. Sure, there could be plenty more to this story that we’re not seeing, maybe the guy’s a huge pushy jerk, but Wirt’s refusal to consider good advice cements his inability to allow himself means of being happy, which of course ensures that he’s never going to be happy.
Which is what makes the ending of Into the Unknown so perfect. After finally finding their frog, the old black train whose whistle we hear at the beginning of nearly every episode nearly kills them, and as they tumble down a hill into the cold-running river foreshadowed by the episode’s opening song (and the opening sequence of the series), everything finally clicks into place: these boys are more lost than they realize.
But when Wirt awakens in the present surrounded by Beatrice’s family, he’s finally able to use the word “brother” to describe Greg. Over the Garden Wall began with a version of Wirt who failed to be heroic even when instructed to be, then moved to a version who could stumble his way through heroics on command, which evolved into a version who could perform heroics autonomously, but now we’ve gone above and beyond: this is a version who’s heroic even when others beg him not to be. We’ve wrapped all the way back around to disobedience, but this time it’s for the sake of helping others. And after dismissing and blaming Greg in the Unknown and the land of the living alike, it’s downright beautiful to see Wirt set off into the unknown once again, willing to put his life rather than his reputation on the line to save his brother.
Rock Factsheet
We come close to learning some valuable rock facts, but Wirt’s too distracted.
Where have we come, and where shall we end?
Beatrice’s mother appears only briefly at the end of the episode, but she’s voiced by musical legend Shirley Jones, and One is a Bird whispers its way out of the final scene. It was pretty much inevitable that Jones was going to sing it.

ok so i finally have interesting stories to tell about my life since college started so i'm probably going to post them here
anyway
lemme talk about what was probably one of the most chaotic mornings of my life.
so. we were supposed to have a sports orientation at 7 in the morning (which was a decision nobody supported but everyone had to go along with it because people were taking attendance). My dumb ass woke up at 6:55 so already i was late.
i go. brush my teeth. and come back to see that my room is locked.
i have no phone no key nothing. legit everything is in my room except for my brush and mf vicco vajradanti toothpaste. and my roommate is nowhere to be seen.
so i run and find her friend (who was thankfully in the floor at the time) and call my roommate, who was already downstairs and also running extremely late
so she legit puts the keys on the floor of an empty lift and is like "stay on the line and tell me when it reaches our floor". and i told her when it did and then fucking RAN to my room and took bath
then full on did some usain bolt level running to the sports center (which i swear to god is some 870548768070000 kilometers away from the hostel)
it was already 7:20 and the orientation was supposed to end at 7:30 so i was like HDCSIGFKDGIHDHBDOHBGDUODUIOYGSYIDGF
and when i reach there i found out legit all they did was introduce themselves and tell everyone who did sports to introduce themselves
and make us into groups and see which group laughs the loudest
while telling us not to do drugs
so basically
i panicked screamed jumped ran and did all sorts of tamasha to go to a class where some theatre kid was instructing people on how to laugh loudly. and i was late for breakfast because of this bs
smfh this is why i hate sports
#g's random musings#g's college misadventures#lmk if y'all wanna hear more stories bc i have a couple#desiblr

[fic] An Interlude Between Friends
Series: Artemis Fowl Rating: G Genre: Friendship & Humour, Post-series Character(s): Holly Short, Artemis Fowl II, Foaly Warnings: Feels, probably. Mentions of past (major) character death Summary: One cursory glance from the report scrolling across her visor screen and she’d already caught on that this was less a scouting mission and more Friendly Intervention, A.K.A. Maybe Get Whatever’s Gnawing At You Off Your Mind With A Friend. Or, in which Holly Short comes to terms with the changes in her life but remains grateful for the little constants—one being her friendship with a certain Artemis Fowl.
A/N: For indefiniteimpala, as part of the AF Yuletide Exchange 2019. Happy holidays! I had a lot of fun writing about Holly and Arty again and hope you'll enjoy this story :) This fic is set post-TLG, without taking into account the events in The Fowl Twins as I started drafting ideas before the new book was released (so no spoilers for TFT). Many thanks to Digi-bro for the last-minute beta work ♥
Fic can also be read on AO3 _______
She could hardly hold back her laughter as he recounted the incident where, out of his love for his darling mother and against his better judgement, he had offered and participated, several weeks ago, in an amateur bake-off organized by Angeline Fowl and her colleagues as part of the Trinity College fundraising event for Dublin’s homeless.
Needless to say, it had been Artemis Fowl the Second’s most excruciatingly embarrassing attempt (and subsequent failure) at making cherry soufflé. “Couldn’t you have gone with the chocolate cake instead?” Holly grinned, wiping tears of mirth from her eyes. “First of all, it’s not simply a chocolate cake,” Artemis said, brows creased as though offended by such blasé abasement of a world-renowned delicacy. “Sachertorte is a Viennese speciality, with an illustrious history as the centrepiece of a long-simmering feud between Hotel Sacher and Café Demel that spanned two whole centuries. And second, despite the clean simplicity of its look and flavour, it is far more tedious to bake than your classic soufflé.” Holly groaned, her grin quickly morphing into a wince. “Spare me the sordid details, Arty. Does it matter anyway? You make working the kitchens seem like an extreme sport, exploding sandwiches and all.”
This time it was Artemis’s turn to grimace, her words hearkening back to yet another old, embarrassing memory. Still, he had the grace to accept the jibe, conceding defeat. “Touché.” They sat, side by side, in the shade of a towering oak overlooking the remnants of the Martello tower and where the old Berserker Gate once stood. Clusters of orange roses bobbed between blades of green, the summer breeze a gentle ripple through the meadows. Holly closed her eyes, enjoying the warmth of the sun over her skin and the scent of the fairy roses wafting all around them. As much as she loved her home and friends back in the Lower Elements, there was always a bone-achingly deep sense of yearning that she shared with all fairies for the world above. She would always miss the unbridled joy and freedom she’d bask in whenever she soared through the endless skies, taking in the view of the lands before her, watching the sun slowly inch its way back into its woodland nest of aspen and silver birches that lined the horizon while the skies rippled from shades of burnished gold and vermilion into a deep, velvet indigo canvas where the stars would flicker, one by one, a scattering of candlelight in the night. The two friends—human and fairy—had taken to spending what little time they had together like this, whenever Artemis wasn’t traipsing halfway across the globe for weeks on end as a guest speaker for various academic conferences, or whenever Holly could spare a few days or hours off, depending on her schedule and on Commander Kelp’s fluctuating moods. Or in this case, depending on a certain centaur’s propensity for sticking his nose into other people’s business. Holly frowned. Truth be told, ever since she’d finally (albeit with a little half-hearted reluctance) accepted her promotion to Wing Commander of Recon Special Ops, she had, quite surprisingly, been in a dour mood, short on patience, and even sharper with her tongue. Foaly was used to her smart comebacks, of course, and usually he enjoyed trading witty jibes with the elf. But even he had found her words to be a touch more churlish than usual. And that was saying a lot coming from the centaur, whose hide was as thick as it gets. Holly knew Foaly was concerned, as any decent friend would be, and had tried to nudge her into talking about whatever it was bothering her, to no avail. What she didn’t realize was how far he’d been willing to go to get her to talk—if not to him, then at least to someone, even if that someone was a young Irishman waiting leagues above Haven. “‘Sightings of the extra-terrestrial inhuman kind’? I can’t believe you of all people would pull a stunt like this behind Trouble’s back,” Holly had muttered when she arrived at E1, easing her pod into the docking station. One cursory glance from the report scrolling across her visor screen and she’d already caught on that this was less a scouting mission and more Friendly Intervention, A.K.A. Maybe Get Whatever’s Gnawing At You Off Your Mind With A Friend. “I didn’t go behind the Commander’s back,” Foaly’s protest crackled over her comm speakers. “He agreed that you needed a time-out. But with your promotion to Wing Commander, and as a friend, he didn’t want to impose a forced leave upon you. I just convinced him that a tiny bluff was probably easier and way more efficient.” Holly only snorted, a flare of irritation rising from her gut. She held her tongue, however, not trusting herself from vocalizing a scathing remark. As if he had sensed her indignation through the static, Foaly gave an apologetic cough and said, “Listen Holly, I’m worried about you, all right? This probably isn’t the best way and I’m sorry for the bluff. But whatever’s been bothering you... You can’t keep it bottled up like this. Besides, it’s been a while since you two met. So, try to make the most of it, yeah?” The centaur gave a short, breathy chuckle, to lighten the mood. “Even newly minted Commanders need to gambol about in strawberry fields sometimes. I heard that in a Mud Man song once—or maybe it was by that gnome and dwarf act, Dung Beetles? Huh, I’m always mixing up the two.” And so here she was, sitting beside Artemis Fowl, ex-criminal virtuoso and now friend of the People, listening and laughing together with the young man as he recounted stories of his latest misadventures of the non-magical kind and with hardly any actual thievery involved. Holly hated to admit it, but even a few moments spent with Artemis like this, away from the cacophony of city life in Haven, from the growing weight of all these new responsibilities, expectations—fears, uncertainties, disappointments —it was strangely comforting. She found some solace in his company and was grateful for it, but... She sighed, hunching forward. Despite her best attempts, she couldn’t stave off her earlier sullen mood from creeping through the brief respite. The sudden shift of moods between them hardly went unnoticed by Artemis, of course. She was all too familiar with how attuned he was to the slight changes in her body language. “Something on your mind, Commander?” Artemis ventured, his voice still light with teasing. Holly flinched visibly at his use of her newly conferred title as though he’d thrown a stifling cloak over her. An uncomfortable knot twisted in her gut. “This feels wrong,” she said abruptly, feeling the pinpricks of unshed tears sting the corners of her eyes. Artemis turned towards her, a flicker of puzzlement and concern crossing his features. Still, there was something in his gaze that suggested he was already making a calculated guess about the nature of her sudden distress. But he only leaned closer, nudging his shoulder gently against hers, even as Holly kept her arms wrapped around her chest as if to shield herself from opening up. From giving voice to the dull ache of grief and loss—fears, expectations, disappointments—she had carefully kept tucked away in the background amidst all the congratulatory wishes she’d received when her promotion had been officially announced internally to the rest of LEP. “What feels wrong?” Artemis asked. He paused, uncertain at first if she’d allow the contact, then gingerly reached for her right hand with his left to lace their fingers together. “All of it,” Holly sighed in frustration. She unconsciously tightened her grip around his fingers. The warmth of his touch was consoling and seemed to soothe something within her; she felt her vulnerabilities gradually surfacing as she spoke. “I know what this promotion means to the People, and it’s an achievement to know that I’ve worked through so many hardships just to come this far. I know it, I really do! But even so... There’s a part of me that almost can’t do it. It feels almost wrong to be a new Commander. To be standing where Julius and Vinyáya once did. To replace Julius.” “Technically, it’s less a replacement since you’re assuming command of a number of squadrons and thus continue to serve the People with your skills and experience,” Artemis began, before he caught himself. “But I digress. This isn’t the time for semantics. Especially since in hindsight, you had very obviously meant it in spirit.” Holly scowled, but she couldn’t stop a tiny smile from ghosting her lips. “Artemis, you’re my best friend and I love you, but you’re incorrigibly bad at cheering people up sometimes.” “That I am, and for that, my sincerest apologies.” Here, the young man attempted a contrite grin, even as his blue eyes softened with a touch of fondness. A rare sight indeed for Artemis Fowl, reserved wholly for those dearest to him, but one that never failed to draw a soft chuckle from the elf. “Look, Holly. You’re not replacing Julius,” Artemis continued, squeezing Holly’s fingers again in reassurance. “No one can replace Julius, much like no one can replace you. And I’m not going to drown you with platitudes—I’m sure you’ve already heard more than enough in the last couple of days. But I will say this: Julius would be immensely proud of you, as much as any of us here today. You know this, and I daresay there isn’t anyone else as qualified as you to carry on his legacy and all that he stood for.” Holly found herself matching his grin with a smile of her own at his words, the dull ache of sorrow and anxiety within her lessening. She squeezed Artemis’s fingers back, and was reminded again how much she appreciated their continued companionship over the years. And not for the first time in many years, she wondered what her life would have been like if she hadn’t known him, and Butler and Juliet. (She imagined it might have been quieter, simpler no doubt, but she was a maverick adventurer at heart and knew the boring life wouldn’t suit her anyway.) Holly chuckled softly, her mismatched eyes—one hazel, one blue—gleaming with warmth now. “Maybe you aren’t too bad at this cheering up business.” This time, it was Artemis’s turn to laugh. He inclined his head and gave her a polite nod, accepting the compliment with as much humility as his natural inclination towards smug victory would allow. “I learned from the best.” “My word, and flattery now too?” Holly was smirking now. “If I didn’t know any better, I might suspect the mastermind Artemis Fowl has been replaced with a clone. Oh right, that had been your own idea too. What do we call you now, Artemis Fowl the Second Version 2.0? Artemis Fowl Squared?” A somewhat pained and mortified expression crossed Artemis’s features, before he let out a long-suffering sigh. “Please don’t call me Artemis Fowl Squared,” he protested weakly, fingers massaging his temples. “That joke is wholly pun-based, and is neither mathematically nor biologically correct since a clone is never 100% percent an exact copy.” But his chagrin was fleeting, and he was soon laughing again with her as he conceded defeat to the same elf twice in the span of less than an hour. Then again, Holly had always been the reigning champion of their friendly verbal banters. They sat in a comfortable silence for several moments, watching the clouds drift lazily above them, listening to the thrill of birdsong in the distant woodland. “Thanks, Arty,” Holly said at length, her voice soft and grateful. “For reminding me of what Julius would do. You’ll be there at the ceremony, won’t you? You, Butler and Juliet?” “Of course. That’s the reason why you’re here today, right? To invite us to the promotion ceremony.” Holly grinned and punched his shoulder playfully. “Don’t act all innocent. You’ve probably known all about my promotion long before today and that’s how Foaly roped you into this cheering up business and what-not. Rascals, both of you.” “You have to admit, it wasn’t too bad a plan. And it worked. Besides, we hardly get to see each other—I’m almost inclined to think that either the universe has been conspiring to keep us from spending a little time together, or that you’ve secretly been avoiding me.” Artemis’s brows were arched as though scandalized by either suggestion, even as his eyes remained bright with mirth, and Holly continued to chuckle. Then his gaze softened, lips curved into a smile as he allowed himself a moment of heartfelt sincerity. “I’ve missed you, Holly. It’s good to be with you like this again.” “Me too, Artemis.” It wasn’t long before they spotted the approaching figures crossing the meadows from the direction of the manor. Butler was leading the small group, a huge wicker basket—filled with a selection of cheese and canapés, and a bottle of Jean François Ganevat Vin Jaune—in one hand, and a picnic blanket draped over the other. Juliet trailed several paces behind him, with one of the twins, Beckett Fowl, dangling from her shoulders like an energetic spider monkey. And marching stiffly with his pale fingers gripped around Juliet’s left hand was Myles Fowl, his eyes bright and piercing behind his round spectacles. “I’ll go help Butler with the picnic blanket.” Artemis stood up, brushing grass and fallen petals from his trousers. “Be right back.” Holly watched his retreating back as Artemis walked down the grassy knoll towards his family. And it struck her then just how much her friend had grown and changed (even in a cloned body) over the last two years: his frame still angular but less gangly and more lithe; his posture relaxed, almost unguarded and amiable at times. Growth and change... For the barest of moments, in the sudden gust of wind around her, Holly thought she could almost hear the ghostly whispers of Julius Root from memories past— “This promotion is not for you; it’s for the People.” “If it makes any difference, I’m proud of you, Holly.” “... Be well.” —And she smiled then, exhaling softly as she rose to her feet. “Arty, wait.” Artemis paused, glancing back at her with a puzzled look as Holly jogged up to his side and reached for his hand. “I’ll come with you.” —End—

what’s the big deal? (Explicit) by julamei
Natsu's sexual awakening is... clumsy and awkward, obviously. The poor boy has purposefully remained ignorant of these more mundane, human miracles. that is, until something happens he can't ignore and things between him and Lucy being to grow. Here is my headcannon on their journey around the bases (hopefully this reflects more our own experiences than just our need for fulfillment for these characters).

Artist Research 8-12-19
Frank Frazetta:
Frank Frazetta was born and raised in New York and started drawing from an early age thanks to support from this Grandmother whom he spent a large amount of his young life with.
He attended art school rather than ordinary school and blew his teachers away by his talent and passion for drawing.
At the young age of eight he attended the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts, he described his teacher as supportive but not good at teaching as he often was let loose to draw whatever he wanted with the occasional look over his shoulder from his teacher.
When he turned 16 he started inking comic books working on every genre he could, and after years of drawing, inking and being featured in books he got married at aged 29.
In 1964 Frazetta’s painting of Beatles Member Ringo Starr got noticed and he was commissioned to produce the poster art for the movie “What's New Pussycat” earning hm his whole yearly salary in one afternoon. He later was commissioned to do more movie posters making a total of seven.
Once fazetta had secured himself a spot in movie studios he was hired to work on animated movies, an advertisement based around his work was animated by Richard Williams in 1978 and in 1980 Frazetta worked with producer Ralph Bakshi on the feature” fire and ice” mainly helping with the live action sequences to be rotoscoped later. the realism within the animation was inspired by Frazetta’s style and once Fire and Ice was released Frazetta returned to his roots of Pen and ink Illustrations being featured on album covers and later in his life he opened an exhibition called “Frazetta’s Fantasy Corner”.
Pendleton Ward:
Pendleton Ward is an American Animator, Screenwriter, producer, and Voice Actor who works for Cartoon Network, he is most famous for his work on “Adventure Time”, and the internet series “Bravest Warriors”.
Pendleton became interested in animation at an early age, his mum was an artist who was frequently working with animators and in the first grade he started making flipbooks, he often worked with his best friend Alec Coates on short comics. he later attended Calarts where he became close friends with J G quintel and Alex Hirsch, they later worked on the “Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack” together Eric Homan, vice president of Frederator Studios offered Ward a job at the studios after watching one of his films at the annual Calarts Animation Screenings.
From the years 2002-2004 Ward began work on a webcomic he called “Bueno the Bear” but he later took them down branding them as “terrible” he still keeps the name buenothebear for his website and his name on social media, however he later released a short called “Barista” starring Bueno releasing at Frederator Studios.
Ward began animating for Federators “Random Cartoons!” airing on nicktoons, his one short titled “Adventure Time” blew up all across the internet that year reaching a million views by November 2007, he noticed the popularity of the cartoon and pitched it to Nicktoons but was rejected.
Ward began working on Cartoon Networks “Marvelous Adventures of Flapjack” as a storyboard artist, as it was a storyboard driven show it allowed pendleton and the other artists to add dialogue and action based on what was assigned to them.
During this time ward worked with many other modern influential animators such as Mike Roth (known for Regular Show) and Alex Hirsch (known for his work on Gravity Falls) This inspired Pendleton to re-approach Adventure Time in the same way when it was picked back up as a show.
Andrew Maclean:
Ward developed Adventure Time as a full series and worked on it until around it’s fifth season when he stopped making it, ward still had his input on the show by checking over the script however that’s all he did until the shows end in 2018.
Andrew Maclean is a writer and illustrator behind the comic head looper, a story about a viking warrior and the severed head of a witch.
Head looper started out as a project for Maclean however in 2015 it was picked up to be a four issue miniseries releasing from Image Comics.
Maclean got the idea from a drawing he did for “Brand New Nostalgia” the theme was vikings and maclea when he was finished was left with an illustration of a viking holding a witches head on the end of their sword.
Justin Roiland:
Justin Roiland grew up in california and attended Sierra High School up until the first quarter of his senior year before transferring over to Manteca High School for the rest of his senior year, after High School he attended Modesto Junior College.
He eventually moved to Houston Texas in early 2004 and got involved with Channel 101 and LA media collective started by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab where he directed and starred in various movie shorts.
He now works as a voice actor and co writer for the Adult Swim show Rick and Morty, he voiced several characters in the show.
In the 2016 Rick and Morty panel he stated that one of his key influences was Pendleton Ward and that he loved watching the Ren and Stimpy show as a child.
In an interview for Rolling Stone he stated that he loves making cartoons and games as it allows him to work from his apartment without leaving the house.
Roiland continued to make Rick and Morty, launch new games and raise money for charities such as Hurricane relief where he raised over $200,000 alongside Alex Hirsch and Ethan Klien.
Matt Groening:
In February 2019 Roiland alongside Elon Musk Hosted an episode of Pewdiepie’s Meme review under the request of Pewdiepie’s fans.
Matt Groening was born on February 15th 1954 and became interested in drawing at an early age.
He attended ainsworth elementary school, a liberal art school which he described as a “hippie college” with no grades or required classes. Whilst there he began writing and drawing cartoons for his schools newspaper and became interested in cartoons after watching disneys’ One hundred and one dalmatians.
In 1977 at the age of 23 Groening left to work in Los Angeles as a writer, he worked odd jobs here and there and hated it, he hated it so much that he self published a comic about it called “Life In Hell” It became an immediate success and gave Groening new attention as a cartoonist.
Groening was later asked by James L Brooks to adapt his life in hell strips into an animated series, groening feared this would cause him to lose ownership rights and destroy the comic so after coming up with the idea in Brooks’ office he quickly sketched out the simpsons family which he then planned to be the animated series Brooks wanted Groening based and named a lot of the simpsons characters after his own family.
Groening after creating the simpsons and seeing he amazingly popular it was becoming began work on new animated projects such as Futurama, Groening got the idea for futurama after getting together with his co-writer for the simpsons David X Cohen and discussing the idea of “life in the year 3000” he pitched the idea to Fox and after what he described as the “Worst experience in his adult life” it was accepted to go on the air.
Groening also went on the create the fantasy series disenchantment a netflix series originating from one of Groenings’ sketchbooks full of creatures that couldn’t go in the simpsons.
Alex Hirsch:
Alex Hirsch was born in piedmont california in 1985 and graduated from Piedmont High school.
He went on to attend the California Institute of arts and created a number of short films including his senior project “Off The Wall” which combined live action and animation. He graduated from CalArts in 2007.
After graduation Hirsch got his first job as a storyboard artist and writer for “The Marvellous Misadventures of Flapjack alongside Future Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward and J.G Quintel he would also go on to create the pilot for the Disney Channel Series Fish Hooks alongside Maxwell adams and future Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland.
Hirsch then made it big in 2012 when he created the series Gravity Falls for Disney Channel set in the fictional town of Gravity Falls Oregon it premiered in June that same year and was an instant success, Hirsch provided most of the voices for his characters, The show was moved to Disney XD in 2014 and would a Bafta Children’s award and an Annie award in 2015, Hirsch sadly ended the show in 2016 to pursue other projects.

A Look Back at 24, the Men I dated, What I Learned, and Why 25 was a Great Year
I have been meaning to write an entry about what a mess 24 was, how 25 was amazing, and how I hope being 26 this year will enable more growth and be filled with more awesomeness.
A Heart that Loves
I entered the dating game somewhat late in life. I never dated while I was in high school or college, or even pursued dating in general. My first relationship didn’t occur until I was at the ripe old age of 23 and so it goes without saying that I was pretty naive when I entered into it. I was so naive that I expected it to be like a teen romance movie and it didn’t take long before I realized real life is nothing like that.
My first relationship was with Antonio, a classmate and (former) friend from medical school. I had only known him for a few months but we were fast friends and became attached at the hip. When I returned to St. Kitts for my 4th semester, the landscape changed since two of my closest friends were gone and I began to invest more and in my friendship with him. Although I wasn’t initially attracted to him, there was this weird phenomenon where the more I saw him, the more attractive he became. One day in March, halfway through the semester, Antonio led me away from a party to talk and within seconds, we fumbled through a confession that we had mutual feelings for one another.
Things were a bit confusing at first because it was my first time developing genuine feelings for a person, and even more confusing was that that person was a guy. Surprisingly, it didn’t take too long before I felt comfortable telling him how cute I thought he was and how I enjoyed holding his hand under our backpacks while we road the bus home to conceal our intimacy. We even went to our Med 4 Banquet together and coordinated our outfits. That night, I quietly snook out of my apartment to sleep at his place for the first time. I’ll never forget how he looked as he stood over the balcony waiting for me and how he led me to his bed. I felt my head fit perfectly on his neck as we lay there, and so with almost no hesitation, I asked if I could kiss him. He said “yes”, and that was my first kiss. I was in relationship bliss. St. Kitts really was a paradise.
A Heart’s a Heavy Burden
Going to Portland, Maine, was like realizing that the clock had struck past midnight; the fairy tale was over.
I don’t want to get into specifics but it was like the Antonio I knew on the island was replaced but an unrecognizable person. The person who made me feel special only made me feel unwanted. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: there is absolutely no worse feeling than having to convince yourself that someone loves you.
Our breakup occurred almost intermittently over the course of the summer. At first he said he needed a break with very defined boundaries that became less strict. I would occasionally see glimmers of the old Antonio but it wasn’t enough. Because I was so in love with him, I sacrificed so much of myself hoping to be loved by him in return. I over enthusiastically jumped at the chance to visit him in California when he invited me to stay with him and his family. I even thought my arrival there signified that we were a couple again since he planned a photoshoot for us at his favorite beach spot.
However, he put his walls back up as soon as I returned to NJ. He became dismissive and distant again. And then, days after my 24th birthday, he broke up with me through a Facebook message, that I never really recovered from.
When rejected by the person you love most, when betrayed by the person closest to you—that’s when self-abasement begins. You hide in a space that’s all your own, and close your heart.
I’m not a fan of who I became after my first relationship. My self esteem was shot. I was upset. I was angry. I had no one to talk to because I wasn’t out yet.
I like to celebrate my birthday surrounded by love because I really believe that it only invites more love into your year. Unfortunately, I felt unloved heading into my 24th year. Looking back, what I regret the most is how bitter I let myself become. No one likes that taste in their mouth but I couldn’t get rid of it.
It didn’t help that the Jantonio saga took up the majority of the year. I kept going back and forth trying to be his friend and trying to reconcile with him; I kept looking for a closure that didn’t exist. I kept holding onto the hope of us getting back together and that he would wake up and realize how much he loved me. That never happened.
Ultimately, I ended up self sabotaging myself in August 2013, nearly a year after our break up. After a well meaning g chat conversation that he initiated, our friendship was officially over. I even removed him from every social media account. I felt horrible about losing a friend and experiencing something where there couldn't be any absolution but I knew it was what I needed to do. The out of sight and out of mind method worked until a friend told me that he was heading to Chicago. I felt so guilty about the way things ended that I reached out to him and asked to meet up with him but he never replied. I can’t even begin to describe how it felt knowing he was in the same city as me for the first time in over a year and that I couldn’t see him, or reconcile.
Sex in the Windy City
I have to backtrack a little bit here because my saga with Antonio overlapped with my misadventures in Chicago. I moved to Chicago in June 2013 and I was determined to find love, enter a relationship, and finally move on! I decided to try online dating since my friend, Caryn, was so successful on it (and now she’s getting married to someone she met on OKC!).
Online dating is definitely a really interesting experience. I’m glad I did it but I would never want to go through the world of online dating ever again. Online dating felt like I was playing some online game instead of finding a match. It makes you feel shallow, it can boost your confidence, and genuinely creep you out.
I’d like to call the next part of this the “What I Learned” section, full of anecdotes, funny stories, and what I really learned from each guy.
JR was one of the first people that I messaged on OKC. He had a really well thought out profile and he was really good looking. He was a graphic designer, he was Filipino, and he was also a recent transplant to Chicago so I thought we had a lot in common. He was also the first person I asked to meet up so I was beyond thrilled when he said he wanted to hang out. His initial idea of a hang out was to go see a movie (LAME!) but we ended up deciding we would just go out to eat. Since we were both new to the city, we didn’t really know where to go but he lived downtown and figured there would be many options. I drove up to his place to meet him and he made me wait over an hour for him because he was busy getting a haircut (and later I saw that he was taking selfies of himself to later put up on his profile; how uncool!). That should have been the first sign that we were incompatible but I waited for him anyway. He didn’t even apologize for being late! Even thinking about how rude he was gets me annoyed. Dinner was okay and the conversation was actually pretty decent. In the end, he paid for our meal as a means to apologize for making me wait and so I agreed to meet up with him again. I wish that I was strong enough to decline because he ended up being a waste of time. Looking back, I should have seen the signs! He used the same cologne as Antonio and he was also from CA. If he was anything like Antonio, I should have seen that he was trouble.
For our second meet up, we decided to be tourists and go see all the city guide spots. Again, he was late and didn’t even apologize for making me wait for him at his place. He didn’t even help me navigate around the city. Also, he was REALLY boring. Although I found him somewhat eager to talk about himself, he had absolutely no interest in actually making conversation. By the time we made it to dinner, I was miserably bored. He kept talking about how his friends were inviting him to go out that night but he never invited me to join him. I felt dissed and decided it was time to go and he acted surprised when I wanted to leave early.
I learned from JR that I didn’t want to date a guy that was way too into himself. He bragged about how much money he makes, how he was too good for an audi, and how essential he was to his company. He was a true narcissist. If you check out his IG account, it’s full of selfies and his purchases. Yuck. I’ve bumped into him twice since those events. Once at a mall where I was trying to avoid him but he followed me into a store and waited for me to notice him and acted like he wasn’t following me. The second time was after matching. I went out to boystown to celebrate and since I knew I couldn’t avoid bumping into him, I went up to greet him. His first instinct was to mention how Antonio had visited him. Yup! It turns out that Antonio and him had a history. Antonio flew all the way out here to visit him right after out heated break up in August 2012.
Kekoa was one on the reasons why I was excited to move to Chicago. Don’t judge me here, but I actually screened all the cities where I could do my clerkship for which had the most attractive guys. Kekoa's profile was one of the first ones listed in Chicago, and I had an instant crush on him. I wanted to meet him, but I decided I needed to practice talking to other guys online first to not blow my chance with him. His profile included a story about playing a game of Taboo that was so wild that the police were called due to a noise complaint. Luckily I had plenty of experience playing Taboo in medical school because it was one of the only games we had on the island (thanks, Nick’s mom!) and I was able to send a message with more substance than “Hey, what’s up?”. Needless to say, I was ecstatic when he messaged me back and agreed to meet up. Our first “meet up”, as he likes to call it, started at a cocktail lounge, where I got carded and became self conscious since he told the bartender that I looked like a baby. Luckily, our dinner went well, and conversation felt seamless; I even had to excuse myself to put more money into my parking meter. I thought it was a perfect date, but there was some radio silence afterward that made me think otherwise.
Luckily, I’ve learned that persistence is key. Since he wasn’t getting back to me about another date, I made made a trip up to his campus to make it too convenient to see me. I was told that a second date is the true test to see if it’s worth pursuing the person, and this date did just that. I ended up staying the night at his place, and when I awoke the next day, I was worried that I’d have a Bridesmaids moment and be kicked out, but he invited me to get breakfast and taught me how to parallel park instead.
I saw Kekoa once more afterward, and then didn’t hear from him again. I remember reciting a prayer before sending him my third text in a row without a response asking God to inspire him to message me back. I was at work when I received a text from him basically saying that right now wasn’t the right time for him to be in a relationship. Although I accepted his answer, I timidly asked him to message me when he got back if he wanted to reconnect, but I knew that was a long shot and his track record only didn’t make me believe otherwise.
Juan was a nice Mexican guy that I met on OKC. We met up at the mall near me, which was really sweet since he was the first person that didn’t have me drive out to them instead. The first date went well and afterward, he told me he had a good feeling about us and wanted to see where things could go. I was curious too, so I eagerly agreed to another date. For our second date, he picked me up to take me to his favorite spots, which included a late night restaurant in Chinatown and Hollywood Ave Beach. I really appreciated that he wanted to give me insight into his world and that he wanted to share it with me. In the end, I didn’t really have any romantic feelings for him; I didn’t even feel inclined to kiss him or invite him up to my room after second date. I kind of loss interest since I had decided that I wanted to fully focus on Kekoa. I knew it wasn’t going anywhere when he asked if he could call me and I was completely uninterested in the conversation.
I learned that it’s important to be with someone who has more in common with you. Although Juan was nice, his idea of fun was watching drag shows and he worked as a store manager for Party City, so it made it hard for me to relate to him or empathize with him if he had a busy work day.
I bumped into him almost a year later at Scarlet and we both excitedly introduced each other to our boyfriends. I could tell that we were both mutually happy for each other and I really am happy that he’s able to make someone else happy.
Genesis was the first person I reached out to after Kekoa up and left me. I was so desperate to meet someone who could fill the void I felt that I met up with him after a short exchange of messages. I feel horribly shallow about this, but I could tell that I was not attracted to him from the moment I saw him. That non-attraction definitely put a damper on the rest of the date even though he was a genuinely nice guy. For once, I felt like he was trying to drive the conversation more than I was. To be honest he could probably tell that I wasn’t invested.
I learned that I was becoming desperate and that desperation is not pretty. Feeling desperate was even worse than being alone.
Ramil was a Filipino guy almost 10 years older than me. I wasn’t too excited to meet up with him because nothing in our conversations pulled me toward him. Regardless, I was so desperate to meet someone that I said I agreed to meeting up with him. There really isn’t much of a story here but I can’t help but laugh a little when I think back to how taken aback I was when he first opened his mouth and spoke to me. I was so surprised by how (Micky) mousey his voice sounded that I had to have him repeat his hello. Our lunch date was boring and I couldn’t even pretend to be interested.
I learned that I am just as shallow as every other guy out there. I couldn’t get passed the sound of his voice and judged him way too harshly.
Alan(?) was someone I met when I downloaded Grindr in an act of absolute desperation. Clearly, the theme of August was “desperation”. I was pretty optimistic about online dating and didn’t think it would take too long to match with someone. I felt pretty successful with the attention I was receiving from people on OKC and even more lucky when I had found a match in Kekoa up until he vaguely ended things. So I went on a date with someone from Grindr, a hook-up app, who didn’t have a very clear profile picture and it didn’t show his whole face. Big mistake. He must have used an old photo because it didn’t look too much like him. In addition, he was kind of bitchy and I wasn’t into his vibe at all. Obviously, he didn’t make much of an impression on me since I can’t even remember his name.
I learned to never go on a date with someone with just one profile picture. It’s almost a giveaway sign that they’re not going to look like it in person.
Bryan was someone who I was intimidated by on OKC. His profile was highlighted in red because it meant that he didn’t respond often to people’s messages. I figured he could be selective because he must have had a lot of interest thanks to the many shirtless photos he posted (in addition some really good answers in his profile). Surprisingly, he messaged me back! It was an instant ego boost that someone that OKC had labelled “very selective” responded to me.
I picked him up from his work and was happy to see that he looked like his profile picture but I felt tricked as soon as he opened his mouth because it turned out he was a Vietnamese fob with a very strong accent. So in that instant, I became a self hating Asian. Horrible.
Our first date was pretty horrible too. He didn’t know where to go around his work so we ended up at the mall’s food court. The silence was awkward and palpable. I felt like he was just watching me eat and it was like pulling teeth to get him to talk. He finally opened up when we made it to a Starbucks. He was actually pretty interesting even though he was obviously shy. He was born and raised in Vietnam, moved to Singapore for school, continued education in Texas and then moved to Chicagoland because of a job that needed someone who was multilingual.
After a quiet date, he messaged me asking if I would be willing to go on another date with him. I agreed as long as he promised to not be less shy the second time around.
I will use this opportunity to take a break, recap, and try to tie in all these loose ends together
The darkest days in my story of heartbreak culminated during Labor Day Weekend. Kekoa had just ended things with me. I went on several “fail dates” that left me feeling empty, desperate, and ashamed. Needless to say, my self esteem was at all time low, and that’s a considerable thing to say since I had always been very secure in who I am. Things got worse when I received news that Antonio was coming to town. I still remember being at work and feeling my heart race to the point of exhaustion. I was shocked to hear he was coming here. Janet Jackson’s “Again” started magically playing in the background of that moment. I thought I had come to peace that he was no longer in my life since I had a few weeks to heal but I reached out to him trying to make peace. He never replied and I had to accept that I wasn’t going to see him although it left me devastated. This was the same weekend that Bryan asked me out and I was glad to have a distraction.
Bryan brought me to Boystown, the gay neighborhood in Chicago that I had never been to but wish I had discovered earlier. We grabbed dinner and then headed out dancing. I was actually having fun! I forgot about being down and out and just moved my body to the beat of the music. We went to another bar and he brought me to the third floor in a secluded area and attempted to kiss me. I cock blocked him and said, “maybe we should get a drink first.” However, he was really persistent. He made his second attempt at a kiss and I gave in. He was not a good kisser. I felt like he pursed his lips so tightly together that I could feel every wrinkle and my tongue had nowhere to go. Things got a little bit creepy when he tried to feel up my shirt. He said, “I can tell you have a nice body.” Honestly, he had a nice one too. Fully chiseled pecs and a tight 6 pack. He stood taller than me at 5′ 10″. We continued making out until he pulled back and said “I could fuck you.”
That should have been my sign to run away, but I didn’t. I agreed. I kept thinking about how Antonio was so displeased with me for never going all the way with him. I was at my lowest point and genuinely believed that maybe it was time to give up on losing my virginity to someone who I loved and loved me in return. I loved Antonio but knew that it was one sided, which is why I never let things go that far. After experiencing so much heartache and going on so many fail dates, I started to believe that I was meant to be alone for the rest of my life. I am not proud of that night and I get upset with myself when I think about all the opportunities I had to walk away from it all.
I felt gross the next day. I couldn’t even look at him without feeling sick. But there he was in front of me, representing all the things I had desired the whole summer--a boyfriend, a relationship, someone that was into me--and suddenly, I didn’t want it, any of it, anymore. That was the last time I saw Bryan.
I learned that no act of desperation should make you do something out of character.
When I was 13, a priest said that the purpose of saving sex for marriage was because we give up half of ourselves when we become one with someone in intercourse. If you go around having sex with multiple partners, you’ll only be able to give a small fraction of yourself to your spouse. If you wait until marriage, you can give all of yourself to the person you make a vow before God with. As soon as I heard that, I promised myself I would wait. I even prided myself in my determination. Yet at 24, at my lowest, I gave that all up and gave a part of myself to someone I didn’t even know.
When you are down to nothing, God is up to something.
I drove home feeling disgusted with myself, with my actions, what I gave up and what I had let myself become. I turned into a senseless person desperate for love. I became someone who’s self esteem was suddenly rooted in whether or not I was in a relationship. Believe me when I saw that prior to Antonio, I had never desired having a significant other because I never saw the point in having one. I was fully content in myself and the relationships I had with my family and friends.
I got home and declared to the heavens above that I was done with dating. I was done with being upset. I uninvited myself from my own pity party. I was focused on rebuilding myself and allowing God to heal me and make me whole again. “Shake it out” by Florence and the Machine became my anthem and every time I sang the chorus, I felt like I was gaining myself back.
It felt like the moment I that I was finally at peace with myself and my situation, the universe threw a few unexpected and surprising pieces into place and I accepted them with open arms.
After waiting what felt like an eternity, I finally sent Kekoa another text message. I knew that Septemeber 6 was his birthday, so as early as August, I planned on messaging him just to greet him. Unfortunately, OKC lied to me and tricked me into believing that his birthday was a day early. PRAISE THE HEAVENS ABOVE because Kekoa actually messaged me back! I wanted to be chatty but I had to control myself and keep it short, simple, and make every attempt to not sound like a stage 5 clinger. My plan worked because he messaged me several days later, the day before my birthday, asking when my birthday was.
When it rains, it pours.
Manny was someone I met on OKC after my crazy Labor Day Weekend in hopes of just making a friend. He didn’t live too far from the suburb I was in so we met up for bubble tea. He was actually REALLY good lucking, tall, and Latino. I was instantly attracted so I was disappointed when I learned that he suffered from Yellow Fever. I only hung out with him twice. My second hang out with him was at his place where we watched a Korean Drama (”Who Are You”). His room was covered in anime and K-POP posters. I was definitely taken aback by it but thought it was kind of endearing. However, I soon began to think he had an Asian fetish because he would send me photos of hot Asian guys on my phone and say “Happy Humpday!”. I never met up with him again but he was definitely one of the people that contributed to the upswing I was feeling as I turned 25.
I learned to NEVER date a guy with Yellow Fever! It’s super flattering at first but then it gets creepy real fast.
Smith was someone I messaged on POF (yeah, yeah, another dating app). He was Laotian, blond, and was only 2 years younger than me. My only intention was to make a friend and stated that from the beginning. I was surprised he wanted to meet up since most of his messages to me online were one lined and I felt like he wasn’t interested in meeting me when he could be going on dates. He was really quiet the first time we met. We were supposed to watch a movie but then all 4 of his roommates came home unannounced. I was really nervous to be meeting all of these people all at once and I could tell that Smith hadn’t told them he was about to have company over. I’m pretty sure he felt awkward introducing me to them when he had just met me moments ago. Regardless, I ended up having a pretty decent time watching “Insidious” with them.
Several days later, Smith invited me to his birthday dinner with his roommates and it was really fun. We went back to his place and he insisted we took shots for his birthday. We ended up not going out that night but he insisted that I slept over instead of driving home. I did. And it was so nice just sleeping next to someone and being held. It was purely innocent; we didn’t even share a kiss but I really appreciated that. I was leaving for home by the end of the week but he made me promise that we’d celebrate my birthday when I got back.
Everything changed when I turned 25.
One reason why my 25th birthday is so memorable for me is because my relatives from the Philippines were there to celebrate it with me for the first time! The other reason was that I felt like I had two prospects waiting for me in Chicago.
I started seeing Smith pretty regularly, but it was pretty casual, and I started wondering if we were just meant to be friends. That changed the night of his birthday party. A few of his friends I was meeting for the first time implied that they’d break my neck if I broke his heart, which definitely caught me off guard but gave me a bit of courage to be more flirtatious. When I tried ordering a drink for him at the bar, he placed his hand in front of mine to stop me from speaking, and I kissed his hand (I’m actually blushing as I type this). We went outside, made out, and I ended up staying the night with him.
I really, really liked being with Smith. He was young and fun, and more importantly, he made me feel young and fun. I loved going out dancing with him, fooling around with him, and just being around him. If I could talk to him now, I’d thank him for pulling me out of my rut and making me feel loved and special again. However, I knew it wasn’t meant to be. I honestly couldn’t see myself fitting into his world, no matter how fun he was or how sweet he was. It broke my heart to end things, but I learned that you shouldn’t be with someone if you can’t see how you would fit into their world.
Kekoa, again!
I was seeing Kekoa around the same time I was seeing Smith. We made plans to celebrate each others birthdays in early October. I was so excited to see him, but I was actually really offended when he made fun of my outfit and I actually thought he was trying to really hard to impress me. At one point during dinner, I even thought about how this would definitely be the last time I’d see him. However, we ended up going out dancing and drinking and I ended up at his place. I’m embarrassed to say that I drunkenly basically confessed that I had a huge crush on him and thought that he was marriage material. YIKES! I woke up the next say saying “I should go”, and left in a rush. But surprisingly, Kekoa messaged me again the next day and asked when he’d see me again.
Things got a little bit messy as I’d spend a Saturday with Smith and then have plans set for Sunday with Kekoa. But once I realized that I didn't fit into Smith’s world, it made it easy for me to end things with him to be with Kekoa. I formally made the decision to end things with Smith when Kekoa tried to nonchalantly call me “babe” and asked me to be exclusive (on November 1).
I wanted to start our relationship on an honest foot, so I told Kekoa that I was seeing someone the same time I was seeing him. Kekoa was hurt when he found out that our story wasn’t exactly how he perceived it, and I thought he’d never want to see me again based off of how he reacted. But the next day, he called me and asked to come over. He basically told me that he didn’t care about my past (cue “As Long as You Love Me” by the BSB) and that he loved me. He said it so easily and without hesitation. It warmed my soul in a way I can’t describe. It made me feel secure in us.
Needless to say, the rest is history and we’re still together, and still very much in love. I entered a relationship where everything was an adventure, where communication was mandatory, where every day felt important, and everyday with him felt like home.
What did I learn? I learned that:
Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps, hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.
Also important: I learned what I don’t want in a relationship. My relationship with Antonio was toxic and I allowed myself to be belittled into an empty shell of a person. I learned that it’s SO important to be with someone who values you, someone who loves you, and someone who won’t push you away or keep you at an arm’s length. It’s important to be with someone whose whole being is one that you want to emulate. And somewhat oddly, and I’m learning this in pediatrics, it’s important to be with someone who you’d want your child to grow up to be like and that’s what I have with Kekoa. If my offspring could be kind, intelligent, selfless, patient, adventurous, and have a healthy appetite, I know I would be bringing more good into this world.
I didn’t mention this earlier, but Antonio actually reached out to me with this message prior to my birthday:
“Jan - I know this is out of the blue and I’m probably the last person you want to hear from. I just want to apologize for not responding to your texts when I was in Chicago. In all honestly, I didn’t know how to respond. I didn’t know what to say because the last time we talked it seemed as if we weren’t going to talk/chat/see each other for a while. Things between us have been a little too emotionally heavy for me (and I’m sure for you too) and I really just wanted some space from that. I’m sorry for everything that has happened but despite all of that I still truly value your friendship even if we agreed to take a break from it for a while. I hope all is well with you and thank you for everything. Ps. Advance happy birthday”
I was tempted to respond and try to reconnect. But I knew I couldn’t. I know I couldn’t let someone so toxic reenter my life. And I’m proud of myself for severing that relationship with him and blocking him out of my mind and achieving peace.
I pretty much spent my whole 24th year being heartbroken, but that’s okay. I learned so much about myself in that year of self loathing and true desperation. I am a naturally optimistic, happy-go-lucky, and cheerful guy, so I am thankful that I was able to experience emotions I had never felt before. If anything, it makes better able to appreciate all of the happiness I have now and have an understanding of who I am at my worst and best.
I think what I learned is best said by my spirit animal, Dr. Christina Yang:
“Burke, Burke was…he took something from me. Little pieces over time, so small I didn’t notice. He wanted me to be something I wasn’t, and I made myself into what he wanted. One day I was me, Christina Yang, and suddenly I was lying for him and jeopardizing my career and agreeing to be married and wearing a ring and being a bride until i was standing there in a wedding dress with no eyebrows and I wasn’t Christina Yang anymore. And even then I would have married him. I would have. I…I lost myself for a long time, and now…that I’m finally me again…I can’t…I love you. I love you more than I love Burke. I love you, and that scares the crap out of me. I let him take pieces of me. And that will never happen again.”
