quick q! why would it be funny that peeps refer to the goat as 'she'?
Apparently if you change program on your phone (such as going to google translate to look up what bock is in english) tumblr will delete everything you've written.
The yule goat or straw goat is based on Tors goats, which are called Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr. The names mean tooth grinder and (the one with) gaps between the teeth.
There are female goats in norse mythology (Heidrun comes to mind) who are specified to be milkable. In the myths we hear of Tor eating his goats from time to time, but he never milks them.
But the biggest reason i find it funny that people would see the goat as a girl is because the goats are called "julbock", or "Tors bockar", with bock meaning billy-goat, male goat, specifically.
Gävlebocken means "the male goat in/from Gävle". I guess it's kinda like saying "she" about a rooster.

This makes my cold, black heart rather happy to think about. Coming from a German/Norwegian family I learned about these when I was but a child...

Best part about december in sweden is the Gävlegoat. Almost every year it have been illegally burned down even tho it gets more and more protection. Last year they had fences, security cameras and guards, there is a list on wikipedia of all the years it have been burned down

Okay but does anyone have sources for this post? Because, while I am not knowledgeable about many things, norse mythology I at least know *something* about, so here are the claims I've heard/seen:
"Yule" or rather the Nordic "Jul" doesn't come from any god as far as I am aware, but the old norse word "jól", being the name for the offering/blot of the season (or in general? I'm unsure)
What gods that I know about could be the origin for Jul? Well, Ull sounds a bit like Jul (and is associated with winter), and uh... Njord? But I see few reasons to celebrate the god of winds and waves in, yk, the winter?
We do have a whole lot of carols, though! But most are about the Christian Saint Lucia, and Tomtar and stars. Idk if that applies for the other Nordic countries, though
Our first recorded Gingerbread cookies (in sweden) is from 1335 tho! Fun tidbit.
Oh also! Our Luscianatt comes from both the saint and Lussi, an evil vätte.
As for hearing the sound of Seipnirs hoofs on the roof, there is a point in that we did listen for hoofs on the roof around Yule, but that's because if you don't you'll be pulled into "the hunt" and so you might not return. Bit of a darker story!
As for Thor or Odin being visitors on Yule and bringing gifts? There's a grain of it in what I can find, and that is that the Yule Goat might have been one of Thor's goats. He is mildly related to Santa, in that he came to visit and (among other things) ensured that everyone got at least one piece of new clothing for Yule. He's the reason we have the Gävlegoat, too!
This might also be a part of the Hoof-tradition? Iirc something something Thor's goats on your roof. I have no sources for that though.
Also, we have long had the tradition to give gifts around yuletide to strengthen connections and friendships (just like many other places have)
Ooh and the christmas tree! We THINK it comes from Roman celebrations, but up here it might have developed independently as well! It protected against the dead and evil (which was good in the dark yule nights) and Vättar might even live in the trees, in wich case the warmth is good for them!
Another good one is the Yule peace, that originates from before the 1200s, which is cool!
Okay, that ended up off track, but my point still stands, are there sources or can anyone confirm? I agree with the general message, of course, but I still wonder! 😅
