Short and catchy," Fionn observed, his attention still mostly on providing the dog with as many strokes as he wanted, scratching behind Boss's ears and responding with a smile when the dog seemed to enjoy the gesture, even if his interest in Fionn might be based around the pup cup he was currently licking rather than genuine enjoyment of Fionn's company. "Maybe I'm biased toward one syllable names, though." He pointed to his name tag as an explanation, before shrugging, "the O is silent, it's just a dumb spelling." (He'd found being named Fionn had left him with continuous explaining to do. Maybe he should just change it.)

Non-English names tag

@catharticallysarcastic tagged me to share my favourite names from my country, or fave non-English names in general. This is such a lovely idea for a tag and I'm so excited about seeing these from other people!

I'm going to leave it as an OPEN TAG because I want anyone who sees this to take part if they want to, and also because Tumblr is still being an absolute dick about turning tags into links properly.

I'm from Ireland and we have some gorgeous names here. These are a few of my faves. I've included pronunciations where it's not obvious from the spelling (which is most of them tbh), but pronunciations of lots of words differ across Irish dialects, so you may have heard them differently from other people.

I've divided the first two lists into male and female names in reference to how they're traditionally used, and included a third list of beautiful words that aren't traditionally used as names but there's no good reason why they couldn't be.

Odhran (pron. aw-ran) I'm using this one in my current WIP

Gillean I'm using a variation on this (Gillen) in my current WIP

Rua Means red, specifically in relation to hair. The colour red is dearg.

Abhainn (pron. ow-in, like "oww, I hurt myself", not like "oh") Means river.

Oíche (pron. ee-ha, with a kind of throaty sound between the syllables and I'm terrible at explaining this) Means night.

Irish names for horses? I gotchu. Grane is cool, and a similar Irish name is Gráinne (graw-nya). You also got Aoife (eefa), Scáthach (scaw-huck), and my personal favourite is Liath Luachra (leah lua-cra). These are all badass Irish/Celtic women. One of the horses I mind in the stable I work at is called Luachra, she's a bae. There's cool boy heroes too! Setanta (phonetic in English) is Cú Chulainn's (coo cullen) original name, Fionn (fyun) Mac Chumhaill (Mc co-ul), and his son Oisín (usheen)!
