Even has 24 hours to test drive the afterlife, where at the end he can either decide to 1. live for eternity or 2. let his existence dissolve into nothingness.

Isak has 21 of those 24 hours to convince him to stay.

Notes and ramblings:

A San Junipero/Black Mirror-inspired AU that follows Isak and Even in the afterlife, equal turns thrilling and introspective as Isak tries to convince Even to stay

First of all the concept of being able to have complete control over your emotions is really clever and interacts with Isak and Even’s characters in different but very interesting ways

I also like the pacing of how things unfold; it moves along without rushing the development of Isak and Even’s relationship, and it takes time for both characters to reconsider their differing viewpoints about the afterlife in light of getting to know each other

Throughout the fic there’s a lingering uncertainty surrounding what Even’s choice ultimately will be, lending their developing relationship a compelling sense of urgency that leads to a satisfying conclusion that feels both unpredictable and inevitable all at once

Note: This fic discusses major character death, but it takes place entirely in the afterlife for these characters.

Favorite lines:

Isak slowly drags his eyes back over at Even. Blinks once and makes sure to convey just as much meaning into this look as his words. “I don’t want to spend eternity here looking for someone to talk to.”

Even’s smile returns. It looks sad. “I like you too, Isak.” There’s no hesitation to it, no ambiguity or suspicion. The way he says Isak’s name is purely authentic, as if he invented it. Isak pretends maybe he did. “And you won’t.”

“So,” Even starts, “how was prison life?” The confidence surprises even himself. But it’s Isak sitting here, and it’s so hard to be angry. Or scared. Especially when the overwhelming relief that he’s okay pulses through his veins. Isak’s the only thing that’s been tethering him to the ground—how is he supposed to let jealousy and anger and self-doubt make him let go? Isak snorts a laugh, and the sound curls Even’s insides into a warm bow. “Mean guards?” Even presses sarcastically with a contagious smile. “Terrible food?” “Oh,” Isak plays along with an eye roll, each word long and drawn out. “The. Blonde curls flop down, and if Even didn’t know any better, he’d guess Isak was suppressing tears. “That whole thing fucking sucked,” he recovers, head tilting back up to rest his chin in his hands. “Jonas knows,” Even treads. “About… us…” Isak sits up straighter. “Fuck,” he sighs, leaning back now against the cushions of the couch and dragging his hands down his face—pulling at his cheeks. “How do I even look him in the eye after this?” He asks more to the ceiling than to Even. “I don’t even know how I’m able to look you in the eye, to be honest. Even—” Isak stops. Like maybe there’s a lump in his throat. “I just want you to know there was never anyone else this whole time. Before, sure. And I know you heard everything in the stall. And I just want you to know there wasn’t anyone else. And I’m sorry—” Even feels light. All too ready to put this in the past. A smile tugging at his lips. “But I don’t think we should do this anymore.” It falls.

What's your strategy for keeping track of what you've already written? Do you do anything more than keep an outline? I feel like I waste so much time rereading what I've already written because I forget what's happening/which characters know what/what they feel now/etc. It especially gets confusing because I write out of order a lot.

i have folders on my “notes” app on my mac where there are a lot of small notes and references to what i’ve already written before. and thank god, because having to go back through 200k+ sounds exhausting. but, yes, thankfully, i’m very paranoid and write small notes down reminding me of what i’ve written and what i haven’t (and i also write out of order) and my outline, also, is very precise, so both of these things help me out a lot.

This week is the second week of our Pride Month feature! Today's rec is a multi chaptered historical au that explores two men falling in love before homosexuality was decriminalized in Norway. If you like it, please consider leaving it some love in the form of kudos/comments!

A Silky Nightmare - Fxckxxp / @fxckxxp (35k words)

Getting over old love is hard. Finding new love—with someone you’re not allowed to—is even harder.

Notes & Ramblings:

This is a historical AU, set in the summer of 1970, before homosexuality was decriminalized in Norway.

This fic is unusual for its portrayal of Even exploring his sexuality. There are many wonderful fics that focus on Isak’s sexuality but only a very few for Even, which is something I’ve wanted for a while and puts this fic close to my heart. 

Both Even and Isak are extremely well characterized, as elements of their canon characterization are drawn upon and skillfully adapted for the era.

Even’s POV around his sexuality is brilliantly done: he’s strongly drawn to Isak, but full of doubt, fear and the feeling that he’s just wrong for feeling that way. Here, as was hinted in canon, Even’s mental illness and sexuality are tangled together for him, and that seems especially fitting in a time period when both sexuality and mental illness were even more deeply distrusted hated. 

Although most of the story is told from Even’s POV, there is a bonus chapter that gives Isak’s perspective. In both parts, Isak’s characterization feels spot-on. He retains his canon confidence and charm, despite having to be closeted, and he is also sweet and patient with Even as Even slowly feels his way into his sexuality. 

There’s a lot of beautiful writing in this story, and it does a wonderful job of conveying (what I imagine) was the atmosphere of the time period. 

Truthfully, this story really wrecked me at times. It’s painful and heartbreaking to watch the boys fall in love secretly, on constant alert for being caught, with concrete and fluorescent lights serving as their “romantic” ambience. But it’s ultimately a happy and hopeful ending, and it’s definitely worth reading for those of us too young to remember that this used to be the norm. 

Note: This fic has some heavy themes, including a lot of internalized homophobia, so please check the tags.

Favorite Lines:

Butterflies. A boy is giving him butterflies. It’s frightening. He doesn’t know whether he wants to rip their wings off or to drink a gallon of sugar water so they have something sweet to flutter in.

So @siljesille  left a request on my skam fic reading thingy and since I’m too lazy to figure out how to get that ‘answer your replies easily’ thing, I’m doing it this way, the long and time consuming way.  Because laziness.  So the comment was this:

And certainly.  I will absolutely share the link for this fantastic fic here.  I probably should have put the ao3 names of people who are also on tumblr under different names, but I didn’t.  But anyway, yes!  People should read all these fics and they should leave kudos and comments because they’re all soo good!!  If you’re enjoying “boy with a basket of fruit” I also suggest reading the rest of @fxckxxp fics because they are also really good and immersive.

And actually, there are SO MANY more fics out there that are also good and that I didn’t put on that post for whatever reason.  So I’m thinking of doing a rec list of my fave fics for Isak and another for Even.  It’s taking ages (mostly because I keep re-reading the fics and that is fun but takes time), but expect those ... uh.  Sometime.  Because that list is waaaaay longer than this one was and keeps growing.

what are your favorite evak fics?

The things is, I’ve read a lot of Evak fics; I started reading back in 2016, when Isak’s season was even still airing! For some reason I’ve never made a rec list though, but I’ll try to highlight some of my faves here.

First of all, I want you to look at the SKAM Big Bang 2021 collection at ao3; there’s so much quality content there, including (but definitely not limited to) Rest Easy by Ghostcat, The Falsification Principle by eirabach, Seasons (Waiting on You) by MinilocIsland, It’s all a bit in-tents by HedwigsTalons, Midnattssol by Lokkanel and I need an easy friend by Treehouse. A true fic and art feast 🙌

Other evak fics that I love and adore and that have all resonated strongly with me are:

The Boyfriend Experience by Ghostcat and MinilocIsland (rated E) - a super cool au premise, exquisitely written and one of the best fics I’ve read. Period.

All I ever wanted by MinilocIsland (rated E) - silent retreat au with sublime pining.

Mondays at Sixteen and Magic Eight Ball by folerdetdufoler (both rated E) - really cool au’s, extremely well-written and with layered characters.

De Døde Kalder by eirabach (rated E) - historical lighthouse au set on a little island off the Norwegian coast. Poetic and lovely. WIP.

Nobody Loves Me Like You by cuteandtwisted (rated E) - childhood friends to lovers with an adorable (and hot) blue-haired Even. Unfinished but worth it.

A silky nightmare by fxckxxp (rated E) - a beautiful 70s au of self discovery and love. Truly amazing. Currently not on ao3, but dm me for a pdf

run down till the rain delights you by imminentinertia, vesperthine (rated M) - Hot fisherman/marine biologist Isak and journalist Even, set in Tromsø.

The weight of us by verlore_poplap (rated E) - aged up characters, what-if-Isak-and-Even-never-made-it-work-the-first-time-around? kinda deal.

Life is now. (and now, and now) by FlyByNightGirl (rated E) - a magnum opus of 420k words. One of the first Evak-fics that blew me away.

making new cliches by strangetowns (rated T) - childhood friends to lovers. Beautiful and well-written with amazing characterization.
