[deutschland-im-krieg]

Professor Doktor Kurt Tank was a German aeronautical engineer and test pilot who led the design department at Focke-Wulf from 1931 to 1945. After serving in the Army in WW1 as a decorated Hauptmann (Captain), he graduated from the Technical University of Berlin in 1923. A mentor from the university secured him his first job, in the design department of Rohrbach Metallflugzeug GmbH, where he worked on flying boats, and helped design a passenger aircraft, the Ro V.III Roland.

Tank moved to the firm Albatross Flugzeugwerke, where he worked as a test pilot. The Albatros company went bankrupt in 1929 and in 1931, under government pressure, was merged with Focke-Wulf. Tank then started work on the design of the Fw 44 Stieglitz (Goldfinch), a two-seat civilian biplane. It was Focke-Wulf's first commercially successful design, launched in 1932. In 1934 Tank's Fw 56 Stösser (Goshawk) advanced trainer began production.

He was responsible for the creation of several important Luftwaffe aircraft including the Fw 187 Falke heavy fighter, Fw 190 fighter, the Ta 152 fighter-interceptor, the Ta 154 Moskito night fighter and the Fw 200 Condor airliner. After the war, Tank spent two decades designing aircraft abroad, working first in Argentina and then in India, before returning to Germany in the late 1960s to work as a consultant for Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB)

The striping underneath the wing are not invasion stripes. The Tiffy looked enough like an Fw-190 from certain angles (apparently that huge intake looks like a radial engine at a distance from the ground) that there were friendly fire incidents with airfield AA, so they put the stripes on.

Broad white stripes and narrow black ones.

They were introduced in December 1942 and phased out in February 1944.

An aircrew officer and a guard on night duty listen to a choir, composed of the ground crew of No. 122 Wing, singing Christmas carols by a Hawker Tempest Mk.V in a dispersal at Volkel airfield (B80), Holland, conducted by the Wing's Padre, Squadron Leader K J Morgan. December 1944.

Nº3 and 56 Squadrons were the first to deploy followed by Nº 80, 274 and 486. The renewed round of combat had cost fourteen aircraft, primarily to ground fire, although the squadrons did clash with Luftwaffe fighters on more than one occasion. Shortly after the five Tempest squadrons settled into Belgium, they were moved to Volkel, Holland under No 122 Wing. Nos 80 and 274 Squadrons were based at Grave temporarily, just long enough to come under attack by an Me262, before rejoining the rest of the Wing at Volkel.

The jet fighters were seen in small numbers, while Bf 109s and Fw 190s were occasionally encountered in some strength. Hectic activity took place on 17 December as the Luftwaffe strove to give some air support to the Ardennes offensive. Tempest pilots of different squadrons clashed with both day fighters, nocturnal He219s, and Me262s.

The last few days of December 1944 brought plenty of action, although operations were occasionally hampered by American fighters, many of whom still had not got the message about Tempests. Fortunately, few of these encounters proved to be fatal, but they remained an unnecessary hazard for the British pilots.
