“Immortal Thorns” (2003) subs
Download here: wtheckzukasubs.tumblr.com/shows
First of all, many thanks to @petitecabriole for donating the closed captions, without them I would have never even watched this show.
This is... interesting. It’s a Kimura Shinji, so we know it won’t be your everyday thing, but the whole concept is a trip, I’d say. We’ve also got an amazing cast, with Haruno Sumire, Sena Jun, Toono Asuka, Ayabuki Mao, Natsumi You, Rika Masumi.
Aizuki Hikaru did this show again in 2018 with small changes, but of course the timing of the subs won’t fit. The changes were mostly small words and the improvisations, so you might be able to follow using the subs as a script.
This wasn’t a taidan show (Osa had just become a top star and all) but I kept having the feeling I was hearing taidan innuendo all over it... In any case, omg, Asako is so pretty here! Haha

Today it's musumeyaku day!
I put sparkles on the photo again ♡♡
For some reason after I went to Takarazuka, I was really not able to return from that dream world (lol)
To that extent, the three days really jolted my heart (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)♡♡

The Hankyu train I used to love, looking quite nice in chocolate brown with my dear theater.

And a quick shot on the big bridge
We've actually been friends for many long years, since the school exam. When we graduated from music school and got our troupe assignments, we were both in Hanagumi (^_^)
We really have a connection (^_^) ♡
I often told her, we were absolutely twins in a previous life~ (lol)
Fuu-chan, always, thank you for everything (∩˃o˂∩)♡
We've been together since we were in our teens, then after this and that it turned into some decades (^_^)
Hahaha...
And then
the entire class I got to meet after passing that exam

Fuzuki Miyo from her sayonara Graph feature. A very pretty, pastel photoshoot also featuring her farewell message. I love how her hair has been styled as well! All in all, a beautiful goodbye to a beautiful musumeyaku top star.

Continuing with Takarazuka's 100th anniversary.
On 4/4, I had the privilege of standing on stage in the Takarazuka Grand Theater for the first time in 11 years.
After retiring from Takarazuka, and then setting foot in the Grand Theater once more when I thought I'd never stand in it again, my entire body was engulfed in nostalgia and bittersweet feelings, and my heart was trembling!
Ahh, it was so amazing.
And being reunited with my seniors, juniors, and classmates who are like my family, the day was really like a dream.
At the ceremony, I was deeply moved by all the active siennes, the chorus, and the congratulatory messages that came from so many people.
Above all else, it was a day that made me feel proud to say, "I was there!"
I hope with all my heart that together with its 100-year history, Takarazuka continues to create dreams from now on.
The photos...
With my adorable little sisters, and my lovely big sister.

~ musumeyaku-centric review #1 ~
Note: Unfortunately I don’t speak Japanese, so beyond the summary given on the performance’s TakaWiki page, I’m not aware exactly what is being said on stage. Besides the few words and phrases I do catch the meaning of, a majority of my thoughts build on the non-verbal impressions. If anything is incorrect, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
In the Amber-Hued Rain
(Hanagumi, 2003)
Sharon: Fuzuki Miyo
Francoise: Toono Asuka
Eva: Yashiro Kou
First and foremost, “In the Amber-Hued Rain” is a feast for any musumeyaku lover, despite how the storyline itself is very much focused on the development of the otokoyaku top star’s character. Being the catalysts of this development, however, both the lead and nibante musumeyaku roles are substantial and subject to an impressive amount of stage time, not to mention that the characters themselves are interesting and complex.
The musumeyaku costumes for the entire troupe are beautiful and consistent in terms of period design, from the first black and white dress Sharon wears in the intro to the stunning, yellow garment in which she sings C’est La Vie with Louis to the black and pink creation in which she leaves the stage last. Everything about this play just caters to my musumeyaku-loving heart and that’s definitely one major reason why I hold both the original Hanagumi production and this National Tour so dear, with a slight bias towards the National Tour version. All because of the beautiful, the amazing Fuzuki Miyo.
If you ask me, Fuuchan is definitely one of the most underappreciated musumeyaku tops there is. I’ll gladly agree that she isn’t the most powerful voice Takarazuka has seen or the strongest dancer, but she holds her own just fine in “In the Amber-Hued Rain” in both dance and song. Despite the fact that it's a play that’s heavy on both the dancing and the singing. What more can you really ask for in a musumeyaku who delivers so thoroughly in regards to the third stage criteria: Acting? Yes, because what makes “In the Amber-Hued Rain” for me is Fuuchan’s acting abilities. Sharon as a character is made into a whole; a whole character with a complex personality and complete motivations. She may be a mannequin as Louis calls her, but she’s a mannequin with a heart – with desires on her own behalf and once Claude sets those desires aflame, she evolves into a woman who is almost desperate in her pursuit. To the point where she’s willing to lie to Claude’s fiancée in order to get him to herself. And even so, despite her deceit and her playful games that drive several men to distraction, Sharon remains a relatable and compassionate character in Fuuchan’s interpretation – a character full of warmth and charm, underneath a mask of untouchable cool and composure. It is a duplicity portrayed with both mastery and skill, so that the differences don’t collide, but rather intertwine. Having seen several others of the musicals from Fuuchan’s top era, this ability really is her greatest talent and makes every of her roles stand out – from “Immortal Thorns” to “Palermo Shines in the Setting Sun”, but to me… Sharon definitely is one of her very best performances and the one I return to time and again.
Now, Toono Asuka as Francoise… I’ll have to admit that it took me a long time to get used to Asuka in this role. Perhaps because she, as a musumeyaku, never really managed to catch my interest in any of the shows I watched her in. This role, however, does catch my interest – even if it’s only upon the latest couple of rewatches that I’ve really warmed up to the character Asuka portrays. Looking at it now, though, I can’t see what is there to dislike. Francoise is just my kind of character. A sweet and innocent girl who, unlike the experienced Sharon, doesn’t know how to dance the tango. She genuinely cares about Claude and goes as far as to forgive him several times for his very evident interest in Sharon, despite her own feelings of disappointment and anger. It was interesting watching the difference in characterisation from her first “In the Amber-Hued Rain” in 2002 to the National Tour, too. The thing with Asuka as Francoise in the National Tour, as opposed – I think, personally – to the 2002 version is that she does ‘sweet’ very well this time, without it getting overly cutesy. Maybe because she didn’t have a shinko lead to juggle alongside such a significant nibante part, for the National Tour. Her singing is, likewise, very pretty. Both in her solo – because yes, “In the Amber-Hued Rain” has a considerable nibante musumeyaku solo – and C’est La Vie with the rest of the main cast. In many ways, Asuka’s portrayal of Francoise makes me feel sorrier for her than for Sharon, in spite of Sharon’s sad destiny. Because Francoise has also had all her dreams broken, by finding her fiancée about to leave on the Orient Express with another woman. And that woman, of all people. Francoise’s heartbreak is crystal clear, seems pure somehow and is altogether just very moving to watch. Undoubtedly thanks to Asuka’s familiarity and hard work with the character.
Other – and last, for this review – honourable mention should go to former Senka member Yashiro Kou in the role of Eva; Shibi-san whom I was previously primarily familiar with from “Rose of Versailles: Oscar” and the revue ‘Tarantella!’. Eva is not a highly significant subordinate part as far as I can tell, but she has a great solo with background otokoyaku dancers and plot-wise relates to Louis in his job as a gigolo – all in all, it’s quite a solid role for a Senka actress. Shibi-san’s acting skills are really superb, even if singing is her main focus. Which is something I’d seen proven already in the 2006 Oscar-hen Berubara of all plays, in her role as Madame de Jarjeyes where she really caught my eye, especially in the National Tour. As Eva, it’s obvious that Shibi-san enjoys performing the gigolo song, but she has also really managed to create a sympathetic character, in spite of Eva’s profession. In the scene where Louis announces that he’s leaving his job, first her disbelief and later her warm farewell are genuine expressions of emotion and overall, Shibi-san just emits such warmth on stage that it’s impossible not to believe that her acting comes from within.
In conclusion, I can only repeat how much I love this play and every musumeyaku in it, also the many minor roles that I haven’t mentioned, mainly because I’m not very familiar with the who’s who of Hanagumi. The girlfriends of the gigolos were fun and pretty to look at in their various costumes. Eri Chiaki was lovely in her solo as Mimi. Even little Shiou Miyabi was subtly shining in her role of maid, relieving Claude of his bouquet of flowers. Everyone was just performing at their very best and it was a joy to watch. The best thing about “In the Amber-Hued Rain”, though, remains the fact that the story may revolve around Claude, but in reality the story arcs of both Sharon and Francoise leave every single male character in the dust with their poignancy and depth. Especially as portrayed by Fuuchan and Asuka. Sharon’s solo from the beginning of the play may have been included as one of Ootori Rei’s songs on the Princess Disc, because she sang it better, but Fuuchan created another Sharon with another focus. A Sharon for herself. And it’s that Sharon whom I adore. Asuka, on the other hand, was given the same role once again, but managed to recreate it. Make something new and, to me, more interesting out of it, thanks to her different chemistry with Haruno Sumire as Claude in contrast to the chemistry she had with Takumi Hibiki in the role. Both achievements indicate a strong musumeyaku and “In the Amber-Hued Rain” is really a musical where that’s what it’s all about. The musumeyaku. Considering Yumesaki Nene’s popularity , I can definitely understand why it was a play that was given to Hoshigumi, for her to try her hands on the part. From what little I’ve seen, the outcome is very different from either of Hanagumi’s versions and this is something that makes me happy.
That way, Hanagumi’s National Tour will remain singular in its kind of perfection.

La Esperanza - Hana 2004
I feel like this show doesn't get enough love. I know most people buy this DVD more for Dancing Dreams and I don't blame them as its one of my favorite revue shows. But I also actually really love La Esperanza as well. Its one of my favorite Osa shows. Its cute, sweet, and has a really catchy theme song. Plus it has Mizu and Kiriyan. But that's not the main reason I love it so much. The story teaches us that even when we can't achieve the dreams we aimed for, we can still find happiness and one's dreams can come about in unexpected ways. The two main characters both have a dream but things don't go the way they thought. But neither of them gives up hope and they remain optimistic. This is a show I need in my life because as silly as the story is, it gives me a sense of hope. That and the kitchen dance scene is one of my favorite dance scenes of any zuka show. I love the use of kitchen items as instruments.
I don't normally ramble on about the shows I put scans up on but felt I needed to give my thoughts on this one in particular. Feel free to delete the text if you want to just reblog the images though. ^.^
