BRIDGERTON
It Is Me (Polin; Penelope Featherington/Colin Bridgerton)
It is the first time since she overheard him declare that he would never dream of courting her that Colin asks Penelope to dance. It is also one of the few times that Penelope denies Colin a dance.
Spite (Peneloise; Penelope Featherington/Eloise Bridgerton)
Their gaze meets for the first time since the Featherington Ball.
Jealousy, Jealousy (Penelope Featherington)
Co-comparison is killin' me slowly I think, I think too much 'Bout kids who don't know me I'm so sick of myself I'd rather be, rather be Anyone, anyone else
Or, the one I wrote to help me work through some shit.
COMMUNITY
Sweet Tooth (Trobed; Troy Barnes/Abed Nadir)
Feeling sick of myself Think I'll try to be someone else Can't be hard to paint a person In my head, create a version The parallel
Guess I must be satisfactory You said you love me exactly the way I am
Or, the Trobed thing I wrote based on some Cavetown lyrics.
CORPSE BRIDE
Blue (Victoria Everglott/Emily)
Confined to her bedroom, Victoria is desperate to escape. However, as she tries to break free, some new and unusual feelings beyond her comprehension begin to surface.
FUTURAMA
Sink to the Bottom (Frender; Philip J. Fry/Bender Rodriguez)
In a fic inspired by 'Sink to the Bottom' by Fountains of Wayne, Bender can't help a heartbroken Fry recover from Leela's rejection. This is something he refuses to accept, not even when Amy expresses concern about his own mental state. Will Bender persevere until his beloved meatbag recovers, or will they go under together?
Aftermath (Frender; Philip J. Fry/Bender Rodriguez)
After Fry gets badly injured on a delivery, Bender is noticeably angry (perhaps not noticeably enough, though, as Amy has to break the news to Fry).
Will Fry successfully get to the root of Bender's anger? Or, will certain feelings be overlooked?
My Hero (Turanga Leela/Amy Wong)
“Gah!”
Leela jerked her head in the direction of the cry. Fry and Zoidberg had halted, while Amy was curled up on the ground, gripping her ankle.
“Oh crap…” Leela sighed, rubbing her forehead in frustration.
-----
When Amy is injured on a delivery-turned-escape-mission, Leela becomes Amy's knight in shining armour.
GRAVITY FALLS
The Search For My Name (Dipper Pines & Mabel Pines)
“You want me to pick a name for you?” he asked, incredulously repeating her words.
She beamed at him.
“Yes!” she answered. “I’ve found so many cool names- I can’t pick which one I wanna call myself!”
HELLUVA BOSS
You Gotta Wanna Break the Heart of All Those Pretty Porcelain Dolls (Chaz/Moxxie)
Perhaps he didn’t deserve to be happy.
MULAN
Him (Fa Ping; Fa Mulan)
Struck by insomnia, Ping finds himself staring at his reflection, or, rather, Mulan.
THE MUPPETS (ALL MEDIA TYPES)
THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER
The First Time it Happens, You Know (Miss Piggy/Nicky Holiday)
She captured Nicky’s gaze like a rare jewel- perhaps that’s why she had been the only thing capable of tearing his eyes from his sister’s priceless necklace, and his thoughts from the Baseball Diamond. His fingers longed to trace her delicate features, to feel her weight in his hands. Digging his nails into his seat would have to suffice for the time being.
---------
A certain pig catches Nicky's eye at the Dubonnet Club. Just for a moment, stealing his sister's necklace and Baseball Diamond are the furthest things from his mind.
MUPPETS FROM SPACE
You've Left Me in the Dark (Gonzo the Great/Rizzo the Rat; Kermit the Frog & Gonzo the Great; Kermit the Frog & Rizzo the Rat)
Once again, Rizzo found himself perched on the windowsill, staring into the vast blackness of the night sky as the chilly air sent shivers throughout his body. Normally, he would get bored of that kind of unchanging view- why people were so awestruck at the sight of the natural world was beyond his comprehension- but, in light of recent events, he couldn’t help but search the sky as though, amongst the stars, he would find what he had lost.
-----
In an AU where Gonzo leaves his friends behind to join his own kind, Rizzo must grapple with his feelings of loss and regret. Luckily, it isn't something he'll have to go through alone.
Distinct (Gonzo the Great & Kermit the Frog; Gonzo the Great & Rizzo the Rat)
"You know what you are, Gonzo?"
"What?"
"Distinct."
------
‘Distinct’. That sure was sugarcoating it…
THE MUPPETS MAYHEM
The Night Breeze Carries Something Sweet (Dr. Teeth/Floyd Pepper)
On an impromptu drive to get Animal to sleep, Floyd and Dr. Teeth realise just how much they enjoy each other's company.
THE MUPPET SHOW
The Shrew (features my OC, Cecil)
After enraging Miss Piggy by harshly (and perhaps hypocritically) criticising her performance in a scene from the Taming of the Shrew, Cecil finds themself being chased around the Muppet Theatre.
OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH
And Again (Blackbeard | Edward Teach & Israel Hands; Blackbeard | Edward Teach/Stede Bonnet) [TW: Self-harm, suicidal thoughts, blood and gore, heavy alcohol consumption]
Without the warmth of Stede’s touch, the chilling blade of the dagger would have to suffice.
REBECCA
This Was Literally My Homework Assignment (Narrator/Maxim de Winter; Maxim de Winter/Rebecca de Winter)
After the Narrator reveals her costume for Manderley's fancy dress ball, Maxim, in a fit of rage, storms off. Though he can escape the company of his guests, he cannot escape his thoughts, and he certainly cannot escape Her.
Or, an overzealous 16-year-old's response to the homework assignment to 'write the start of [chapter 17] from Max's perspective'.
RICK AND MORTY
The Anthem (Rick Sanchez & Morty Smith [i.e. NOT ROMANTIC])
I don't ever wanna be like you. I don't wanna do the things you do. I don't ever wanna be you. Don't wanna be just like you.
SMILING FRIENDS
Replica of a Smile (Charlie Dompler/Pim)
Charlie finds Pim crying.
That's really underselling it, but it's a drabble, so not much can feasibly happen.
TED LASSO
A Man Left With His Very Own Nothing (Nate Shelley; Nate Shelley & Ted Lasso or Nate Shelley/Ted Lasso)
Richmond loses to West Ham, but it isn't enough for Nate.
WE’RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR
Get A Load Of This Monster (Casey)
They stared at the screen. Their inverted-self, a digital reflection, stared right back at them.
They blinked. They cleared their throat. They squirmed. They tugged their shirt away from their chest. They swallowed thickly.
“Not again…” they mumbled.
WELCOME HOME
The Neighborhood (Sally Starlet; Wally Darling)
A collection of poems about the characters of Welcome Home.
More to be added as I write them. I intend to write at least one poem about each resident.
WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (TV)
hey (Nandermo; Guillermo de la Cruz/Nandor the Relentless; Guillermo de la Cruz/Freddie)
'hey'
That’s all it took- a single word, not even spoken- to drown out Nandor.
Catfish (Everyone & Everyone; Nandermo; Guillermo de la Cruz/Nandor the Relentless)
The gang's watching Catfish: The TV Show... for some reason.Nadja's annoyed, Laszlo's bored, Nandor's projecting and Guillermo hates having to explain what's going on.
Waving Goodbye With An Absent-Minded Smile (Laszlo Cravensworth & Colin Robinson)
Laszlo is devastated by the loss of the Boy.
YELLOWJACKETS
All This Devotion (Shauna Shipman/Jackie Taylor)
Now that she’s no longer living in Jackie’s shadow, it feels like Shauna is being burnt.
OR
A very angsty character study of Shauna Shipman and her relationship with/feelings for Jackie Taylor.

Futurama/Simpsons Infinitely Secret Crossover Crisis No. 1 (August 2002)
The Futurama/Simpsons Infinitely Secret Crossover Crisis is a two part crossover between the animated series Futurama and The Simpsons. It was published in 2002 and 2003 by Bongo Comics. A sequel, Futurama/Simpsons Crossover Crisis II, was published in 2005.
In the US, the series was published as its own series, independent from Simpsons Comics and Futurama Comics. In the UK, it was published as issues three and four of the regular Futurama British Futurama Comics series.
The story relies on the Futurama episode "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid". In that episode, the Brain Spawn transported Fry and Leela into many works of literature, including Tom Sawyer and Moby Dick. It also makes use of the idea that Futurama is "real" and The Simpsons is just a TV show in the Futurama universe (as it is in ours).
Part One: Somewhere Over The Brain-bow! The comic begins in Springfield, with a mayoral election between current mayor Joe Quimby and Snowball II, the Simpsons' cat. It turns out that this is in fact an old edition of Simpsons Comics, which Fry is reading as the Planet Express crew head to the living planet of Nerdanus XII. They are taking the biggest comic collection in the universe to the planet, where it will be sealed in liquid diamond forever, as this is apparently the only way they will be collectibles.
While unloading the comics, the crew are hit by the Brain Spawn's stupifaction ray, which drastically decreases any living being or robot's intelligence. Fry, however, is the only being in the universe unaffected, due to his lack of a delta brain wave. Fry, by throwing objects at the Brains, manages to make Leela and Bender intelligent again, but the crew are then trapped inside various comics and adverts by the Brains.
Bender manages to use a spoiler ray to force the Brains to reveal their plan. They plan to take over Earth by creating a false collector's market - by sealing comics up, they will no longer be able to be read. They will then do this with films, books, paintings and other art, until with it collective intelligence of Earth will is gone and will be low enough for them to invade. Fry says that the rest of the Planet Express crew would avenge their deaths, so Professor Farnsworth, Hermes, Amy, Scruffy and Dr. Zoidberg are brought to the planet. Another remark by Fry gets the crew, plus Nibbler, trapped inside an old Simpsons Comic, the one Fry had been reading earlier.
Apart from Fry and Nibbler, the crew get amnesia and wander off into the world of Springfield. After Nibbler realises that they would be more likely to find the main characters (i.e., the Simpsons), Fry sets out to find them.
Bender goes into Moe's (to celebrate his new found sobriety) and meets up with Homer Simpson, who assumes that he's the new Duff beer mascot. Fry heads to Springfield Elementary, where after being mistaken as the new sub teacher, he becomes the teacher of Bart Simpson's class. He tries telling Bart of his origins, but naturally Bart does not believe him and has him locked in the school at the end of the day. Leela sees Lisa Simpson being bullied by classmates and helps her stand up for herself. Hermes and Zoidberg end up at the power plant, where they attract the attention of Mr. Burns and Smithers. Scruffy also becomes assistant groundkeeper at one point and argues with Groundskeeper Willie. Marge Simpson mistakes Nibbler for a baby (due to him hypnostising her) and gives him milk, which causes him to lose his memory as well. And Farnsworth is arrested by the police after they think he's insane.
Part Two: Liquid Diamond Is Forever! Bender is thrown out of Moe's for doing something with the love testing machine, so Homer gets Ned Flanders to give Bender a room. He later escapes after Flanders catches him doing something else with his jukebox. At the Springfield Retirement Castle, Professor Frink overhears Farnsworth talking with Abraham Simpson and realises that Farnsworth is a genius, and breaks Farnsworth out. And at the Springfield Country Club, Zoidberg "saves" Mr. Burns from choking by using a toaster. Burns makes Zoidberg his personal physician.
Next morning, when school starts, Fry manages to convince Bart that he's telling the truth by showing him the comic they're both in. They fly through Springfield on hovering skateboards using some anti-gravity gum. At the power plant, Zoidberg sneezes over Hermes which causes him to regain his memory. Their talk about the future is overheard by Mr Burns, who kidnaps them.
Lisa takes Leela back to her house, where she complains that Bart gets all the attention. Leela tells her she's a special girl and should take attention if not given it. Maggie enters, followed by Nibbler and Marge - seeing Nibbler gives Leela her memory back. Nibbler quickly fills everyone in on the plot using his mental powers. Fry and Bart arrive, followed by Homer and Bender. Nibbler senses great danger, so everyone gets in the Simpsons' car to head to the power planet. They use the anti-gravity gum to beat a traffic jam, but Homer spits it out after the flavour goes. The car lands on a Duff blimp, but Bender's cigar causes it to explode. Falling again, they are caught by Frink and Farnsworth on their flying motorcycle. Since the car is overweight, Fry (with his holophoner) and Lisa are left behind.
The others arrive at the power plant to find out that Mr. Burns will turn Zoidberg into radioactive bisque unless they take him to their "future world". Farnsworth and Frink have invented a device that might get the Planet Express crew back to their own world, which Burns takes. Smithers then takes it from Burns, and reveals himself to really be Amy in disguise! Unfortunately, the real Smithers, dressed up as Mr. Burns, retakes the device. Just as the real Burns is about to use the device, aliens from the "Galactic Time Council" (who look remarkably like Kang and Kodos, but aren't), arrive with weapons. Burns and Smithers run off, after which it is revealed the aliens are in fact the result of Lisa playing on the holophoner, with Fry doing the voices.
The Professors use their machine, which causes a tear in the comic. Nerdanus XII zaps the brains for the tear, which shatters the barrier around the comic. This means the crew can finally go home..... where it is revealed that New New York is now filled with the citizens of Springfield in an "ironic twist ending".

Hidden Gems of the Silver Screen (And, to a Lesser Extent, the Telly)
It can’t have escaped your notice that the majority of my more recent posts (and fuck knows I’m not posting regularly at the moment) are about movies and TV. The reason for that is pretty simple: 2019 has, surprisingly, yielded some great movies and TV... and also some really torrid shite. On the one hand, films like Ma, Brightburn and The Perfection continue to breathe new life into the horror genre. On the other hand, sci-fi as a cinematic and televised thing continues to ignore its actual audience in favour of sniffing its own farts in a sound-proof chamber designed specifically for next-level virtue-signalling. One thing I will say about the dreck of 2019 is that it’s interesting dreck, at least so far. Another Life, for example, isn’t just bad: it’s mind-bogglingly, fascinatingly bad, as though someone set out to make the worst TV series imaginable and accidentally created a portal to another dimension made entirely of crap.
With all the amazingly wonderful and transifxingly terrible visual media on offer lately, it’s easy to forget that there’s a rich repository of films and TV series from just a few years ago that you’ve probably never watched. You see if you, like me, are a snooty, card-carrying member of the elitist intelligentsia, you probably missed films and TV series that looked dumb as soup on the surface on the grounds that they weren’t worth your time. Luckily for you, I’ve dived nose-first into the detritus of our dying culture, so you don’t have to, and I’ve ferreted out the diamonds from the pig-swill. Without further ado, I’d therefore like to present my list Easily Overlooked Gems.
1. Mandy The phrase “Nicholas Cage stars in a sword-and-sorcery rape/revenge thriller” does not inspire confidence. It’s therefore easy to ignore Mandy and the promptly forget it ever existed. Which is a shame, because it’s kind of a work of genius. The plot is exactly what you’d expect: a cult kidnaps, rapes and kills Cage’s girlfriend, Mandy, and Cage sets out on a mission of revenge culminating in a blood-bath. The nature of the revenge quest is what puts a sting in the film’s tail- or tale, if you’re feeling puntastic. You see, a lot of the bad guys exist in a constant hallucinatory haze after taking a drug that sent them mad after one dose. In order to fight on their level, Cage has to take a dose too. As a result, the world around him slowly but surely transforms into a nightmare landscape that looks like a cross between a D&D illustration and the cover of a heavy metal album and his grubby, personal mission of fury takes on the unmistakable resonance of a Conan-esque hero’s quest. By the end of the film, you have to wonder if Cage has actually slipped into some sort of alternate dimension or if he’s just lost his game-pieces completely. In places, it’s nearly as painful to watch as Landmine Goes Click (crikey, there’s one for the history buffs) but it looks and feels like Beyond the Black Rainbow. Worth your attention just because of how weird it is. I give it a solid four-out-five decapitated rapists.
2. Baby Driver Nothing about Baby Driver suggested it would be a good film: the way it was advertised as a car-chase movie trying to be cute; the stupid title; the fact that it came and went through cinemas like a fart in the night. Which is a shame, because it’s secretly brilliant. It’s a highly stylised crime film populated with the archest archetypes money can buy (to the point where some of the dialogue has a weirdly beat-poetic feel to it). It’s saturated colour palette and off-beat affect actually have something of a full-colour Jim Jarmusch flick about them. The hook, of course, is that the lead character (only ever referred to as Baby, because he’s got a punchably youthful face) has tinnitus and therefore has to listen to music constantly to drown at the buzzing in his head. The practical upshot of this is that a) every single scene is overlayed with surprisingly great and situationally appropriate music and b) he goes through life like he’s always dancing, so his way of moving lends to the film’s easy-going sense of flow. It also explains where his preternatural driving skills come from (I mean, not really, but within the context of the plot): he’s used to sliding effortlessly into patterns and rhythms because of the music thing. All of this could make a terrible film, of course, but execution is everything and, to everyone’s surprise, especially mine, this flick was executed with an astonishing level of panache. I rate it ten out of ten grizzly motor way pile ups.
3. Nightflyers It’s not just films that get overlooked as the tide of culture washes back and forth, like a great big sea of effluent. TV series also vanish unduly into the dustbin of history. Case in point, the criminally underappreciated Nighrflyers: Netflix pre-Another Life sci-fi offering that was actually good. It’s a pretty classic set-up: a group of mismatched wing-nuts on a spaceship, all of whom have secrets that that will threaten to tear them apart while they try to make contact with an alien life-form. What elevates Nightflyers is just how fuck-uped the cast are. There’s an angry British psychic whose spent his whole life in captivity in case he goes full Scanners on somebody’s head, a guy who only ever appears as a hologram for reasons too twisted to explain here, his evil mother whose uploaded her mind to the ship’s computer and gone batshit crazy, a genetic superbeing and a hacker who can send her mind into computers via a dodgy implant and who may or may not be drifting out of touch with the human condition. It’s great. 6 and half billion out of 7 billion monkeys, boiling in the void.
4. Hardcore Henry No, I don’t know who thought that title was a good idea either, but the point is that Hardcore Henry has no motherfucking right to kick as much arse as it does. It was clearly made on a budget that would embarrass a Youtube shampoo commercial, but it just flat-out rocks. Shot entirely in first-person, it follows the adventures of a mute cyborg as he seeks revenge against the bastard psychic entrepreneur who first built him then tried to kill him. Along the way, his main ally is a dude who keeps dying and coming back to life in a series of identical bodies but with radically different personalities and haircuts (this is eventually explained, but I’m not going to spoil it for you). It’s premise is demented, it’s surprisingly well-choreographed and its soundtrack is an aphrodisiac for your ears. Also, Tim Roth is in it, so that’s just yer seal of quality right there. It came out to a lot of fanfare and many, many cinema trailers back in the day and was then promptly forgotten about as soon as it launched. So I’m dragging it kicking and screaming back into the limelight. It’s on Netflix right now, so go watch it. I rate it a solid 11 out of 15 creepy duplicates of Tim Roth.
5. Upgrade Another lesser-known film about a cyborg. Unlike Henry, however, this cyborg’s life doesn’t so much ‘rock’ as ‘suck balls’. He gets crippled and then ends up with a sentient computer chip in his head that allows him to remote-control his own body despite not having a working spine anymore. Naturally, his experimental tech attracts the attention of some unsavoury characters and he and his brain-chip have to work together to figure out what’s going on, often through a series of ultra-violent, gory fight-scenes that horrify the protagonist himself. Of course, all might be well, except that the head-chip is a homicidal little shit that clearly has its own agenda. I give it at least 0000 0111 out of 0000 1001 painstakingly restored vintage kill-bots.
6. The Tick The Tick isn’t as overlooked as everything else on this list, especially since there have been a couple of previous televised incarnations of the franchise to lay the groundwork. However, I still feel like the modern iteration doesn’t quite get the love it deserves, so I’m throwing it out here. Following the adventures a mad, amnesiac and possibly stupid superhero and his neurotic sidekick, The Tick explores a world where superheroes aren’t the paragons of good from classic comics, the corrupt psychotics of The Boys or Watchmen, or the eternally struggling, walking moral life-lessons of modern cinema. Instead, they’re just ordinary people operating at various levels of competence/incompetence and mental illness and working within a bureaucratic, wildly inefficient framework. That might not sound like a recipe for a successful TV series, but it really is. Drawing out the mundane, human side of heroes and villains against the backdrop of cataclysmic, civilisation-threatening events makes for infinitely compelling and very, very funny viewing. It’s kind of doing for the superhero genre what Futurama did for sci-fi a few years back. It’s also where the phrase and/or popular song ‘seven billion monkeys boiling in the void’ comes from. My rating is four out of five sapient, homosexual boats (which will make sense when you watch it).
7. The Void Amid the high-budget horror extravaganzas of recent years, it’s easy to forget about the void, which feels like the best story H.P. Lovecraft never wrote and looks like David Chronenberg tried to adapt a Heironimous Bosch painting... in the ‘80s. The actual plot concerns a group of people getting trapped in a hospital by murderous cultists and discovering dark secrets and, arguably, a whole other dimension in its basement. You’re not exactly there for the plot though: The Void is a mood-piece and an exercise in visual FX craftsmanship. You’re there to drink in the atmosphere and see what each new cosmic horror looks like. I am delighted to award it ten out of ten unspeakable whisperers in the darkness. That’s enough for two barbershop quartets, an emcee and a supporting act.
8. Happy Death Day It’s Groundhog Day but as a horror film starring a really annoying lass in her late teens has to keep dying horribly until she learns to stop being such a terrible person... and also kill her murderer with a little help from her newly-minted, non-cunty friend. There’s a sequel that I haven’t seen yet, but the original is a low-key, oft-overlooked delight. I give it 9 out of 11 suspiciously similar corpses.

Event Report: NorthEast Comic Con (Winter 2018)
Tumblr media
NorthEast Comic Con & Collectibles Extravaganza’s Winter 2018 edition took place this past weekend, November 23-25, at the Regency Hotel in Boxboro, MA. While much of the world was sleeping off a Thanksgiving-fueled food hangover or scouring for Black Friday deals, the convention served as a great way to get a jump-start on geeky holiday shopping with dozens of vendors, plus celebrities, comedians, bands, and more. I attended on Saturday, which was a blast.
NorthEast Comic Con marked original Godzilla star Akira Takarada's only US appearance of 2018. He even brought over some Gojira collectibles from Japan (including a Godzilla humidifier!) that fans could purchase. The 84-year-old actor came off as sweet, funny, and genuine during his panel early Saturday afternoon, which ran over its hour-long slot as he wanted to continue answering audience questions. He spoke in English for his introduction - during which he congratulated us on the Red Sox winning the World Series - and then used an interpreter to answer questions.
Tumblr media
Takarada shared a humorous anecdote about how a security guard and a cheap pair of swim trunks led to his job at Toho and, ultimately, his role in Godzilla. A memorable moment came when he explained that he called Invasion of Astro-Monster star Nick Adams "Mr. Horny," because the American actor was always asking him to introduce him to Japanese women. He later remarked that Cesar Romero (with whom he worked on Latitude Zero) was even more horny than Adams. He discussed shooting a cameo as an immigration officer for Godzilla (2014) in secrecy, only to have it cut from the final film. He understood the situation and hopes to appear in future Godzilla movies.
While it was largely lighthearted, the conversation became heavy when Takarada spoke about the impact that the atomic bomb had on Japan and how it birthed Godzilla. He compared the film’s American re-edit, Godzilla, King of the Monsters, to a "badly made quilt," as it cuts the social commentary. He also shared a harrowing story of being shot as a civilian by a Soviet soldier during World War II, which required a local doctor to remove the bullet with a pair of household scissors and no medication or stitches. Finally, when asked what Godzilla means to him, Takarada responded, "He's my classmate," before expressing his gratitude to the fans as the original film approaches its 65th anniversary next year.
Tumblr media
Having met Kevin Eastman at Rhode Island Comic Con just a few weeks prior, I was excited to see the other creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Peter Laird, as a late addition to the NorthEast ComicCon guest list. He graciously signed up to three items for free; like Eastman, each autograph is accompanied by a quick Ninja Turtle sketch. Laird was joined by fellow Mirage Studios alumnus and longtime TMNT artist Steve Lavigne, who was equally pleasant.
Other guests included decorated voice actor Billy West (Futurama, Doug, The Ren & Stimpy Show), author and Squirrel Girl co-creator Will Murray, actor Jerome St. John Blake (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace), actor/comedian Frank Santorelli (The Sopranos), actor/comedian Jimmy Dunn (The McCarthys), Emmy Award-winning puppeteer Bill Diamond (Little Shop of Horrors), Disney animator Philo Barnhart (The Little Mermaid, The Smurfs), and "Queen of the Paranormal" Kadrolsha Ona Carole, among others.
Tumblr media
An unexpected highlight of the event was a performance by Gwell-o, a Gwar-inspired band featuring members of the comedy rock act Green Jelly. Like Gwar, the musicians dress as intergalactic monsters with painted-on abs and battle other creatures during the show, but Gwell-o's homemade suits are built out of cardboard and duct tape. The lineup includes performers that do not play instruments but rather keep busy singing backups, dancing, fighting, and engaging in dart gun wars with the audience.
A fun mix of heavy metal, monster movies, and pro wrestling, Gwell-o offers the melee of Gwar without the blood and bodily fluids, thereby making it more accessible to a convention audience. In addition to original songs and their renditions of Gwar and Green Jelly favorites, Gwell-o covered Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" (dedicated to Takarada, who watched on with a smile plastered across his face), "I Need Mo' Allowance" from the cartoon Doug (in tribute to Billy West, who was in the audience), and Judas Priest's "Night Crawler." While some audience members may have approached the performance with curious confusion, everyone left the hour-long set entertained.
Tumblr media
Saturday evening concluded with a live recording of The McCue Report podcast in which host Jim McCue interviewed several cast and crew members from Sweeney Killing Sweeney, including actors/comedians Frank Santorelli (The Sopranos) and Tony V. (Seinfeld). Director Lisa Aimola detailed their attempts to make the comedy film for nine years before deciding to do it independently, shooting it in two and a half weeks with a local cast and crew on a $100,000 budget. The half-hour chat made me eager to see the film, in which comedian Steve Sweeney's standup characters come to life. Limited edition DVDs were available exclusively at the event; otherwise the film is expected to be released digitally in 2019.
NorthEast Comic Con also included more panels, live concerts, standup comedy, podcasts recordings, cosplay activities and contest, a room full of exhibitors, a gaming area, kids crafts and activities, and more. With Rhode Island Comic Con fresh in my mind (and Rock and Shock not too long before that), NorthEast Comic Con served as a strong reminder of how fun a more intimate convention can be. The atmosphere is inviting, and the smaller setting allows for a more creative and unique environment than the huge pop-culture shows. With weekend passes running a mere $20, NorthEast Comic Con is as affordable as it is enjoyable.

NEW GREEN HORNET COMIC
Britt Reid Jr., the scion of the Daily Sentinel publishing empire, vanishes during a wild party on his friend’s yacht. Meanwhile, crime spikes in the streets of Century City with the mysterious criminal/secret vigilante the Green Hornet absent. It’s only a matter of time before SOMEONE puts two and two together, and it’s up to Kato, former partner of Britt’s father, and his daughter Mulan to protect the city AND the Green Hornet legacy, while finding out what happened to Britt. Writer Amy Chu picks up where Kevin Smith left off with an action-packed mystery!
Writer Amy Chu says, “The Green Hornet was one of the top titles on my bucket list to write, so I’m really thrilled to dive in. I’ve been listening to the old radio shows from the ’30s and trying to bring back some of the good guy vs bad guy elements of what made it popular in the ’30s. But this is not a pure nostalgia trip- there’s a lot of modern twists. My parent’s generation in Hong Kong liked Green Hornet because of Bruce Lee as Kato so I’m weaving in some solid martial arts action too.”
Amy Chu writes comics – and only – comics! Following a successful run heading the first-ever Poison Ivy mini-series for DC Comics, Chu began crafting multiple series for Dynamite Entertainment including Red Sonja and KISS. Chu also writes and produces comics for several non-profits including The New York Historical Society, The Baltimore Museum of Art, Pop Culture Classroom, and The Museum of Chinese in America. In her spare time, Chu can be found serving as a frequent speaker/panel moderator/guest at the top industry conventions including San Diego Comic Con, New York Comic Con, Heroes Con, and the Emerald City Comic Con and Fan Expo.
Artist German Erramouspe says, “When I read the beginning of the script for the first issue of this new series, Amy Chu proposed to me that we could make this version of Green Hornet with a noir style, something in the vein of Eduard Hopper’s painting, Nighthawks. Hopper is one of my favorite artists, so with this in mind, I know that this first chapter is going to be really stimulating for me when I go to the drawing table and begin working on it! I can give to Kato and the Green Hornet, two characters that I really enjoy, and am really excited to draw, a somber feeling! I hope the readers can enjoy this new beginning as much as I’m enjoying drawing it! And feel how the night is dyed in a darkest green once again!”
NEW COMIC SERIES – FACTORY
Titan Comics and Statix Press are excited to announce a brand-new comic series, Factory, from Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius collaborator – Yacine ‘Elgo’ Elghorri (Character designer on Matt Groening’s Futurama). Arriving March 2018, Factory is part of Titan Comics’ new Statix Press imprint, which showcases the best comics from Europe and around the globe, introducing audiences to fresh new creators & titles. In the new Factory comic series, Mad Max meets Fallout in a nightmarish vision of life on a dystopian planet. A band of mutants slog through the harsh deserts of a dystopian planet in search of The Factory – the last semblance of civilization left among the wasteland. Factory #1 will come with a spectacular cover by renowned artist Simon Bisley (Lobo, Doom Patrol, 13 Coins).
“The first time I was published in the USA was in the magazine Heavy Metal. I was 22 years old… Years later and after working on movies and TV shows in Los Angeles I briefly worked for Marvel and IDW,” said series creator Elgo, “However, my French albums have never been translated into English. Today I am excited and happy to have the opportunity to be read by a wider audience thanks to Titan Comics. I hope that people will see something artistically attractive or interesting in the spirit of my mentor Jean Moebius Giraud.” “As a lifelong fan of Moebius, who was already familiar with Yacine’s work, it’s a privilege to finally bring Factory to the US market,” said Statix Press brand manager Chris Thompson, “At Statix Press we try to team international creators with artists that readers are already familiar with, which is why Simon Bisley was a no-brainer for this first issue cover. His stunning art complements Elgo’s, and gives fans an idea of what to expect from the series.”
Factory Issue #1 is available to order now from Diamond’s current January edition of Diamond Previews Catalogue.
